Zac Brown Band Will Play Ballparks on 2022 U.S. Tour

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Zac Brown shut down his tour in September after testing positive for Covid and scuttled a New Year’s Eve performance last month in Nashville after contracting the virus for a second time . But Brown and his namesake band are undeterred: On Friday, they announced a sprawling U.S. tour that will find the group playing ballparks and amphitheaters.

Dubbed the Out in the Middle Tour, the trek kicks off April 22 in Greenville, South Carolina, and has dates scheduled into the fall. Along the way, Zac Brown Band will stop at baseball parks like Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Boston’s Fenway Park, and Atlanta’s Truist Park, and smaller stadiums like Hersheypark Stadium in Pennsylvania and Credit One Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina. Brown will also headline the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. on Nov. 4.

Caroline Jones will perform with Zac Brown Band at all shows, while Robert Randolph Band will join as support on select dates.

“Performing in front of millions of fans around the world is one of the most electrifying and humbling feelings,” Brown said in a statement. “It’s been such an incredible year for the band, debuting some of the best music we’ve ever made, and we are thrilled to continue playing live for our amazing fans.”

In a press release, Brown said, "We’re so excited to go back out on the road and keep the unbelievable momentum going ... debuting some of the best music we’ve ever made."

This is their first Valley concert since early 2019, when the Down the Rabbit Hole Tour played Ak-Chin Pavilion.

Here's everything to know before you go to Chase Field — from parking information to details on the venue's clear bag policy and what to expect from the concert itself.

How to take light rail to the Zac Brown concert

Valley Metro trains run every 15-20 minutes with a drop-off steps from Chase Field at the Third Street/Washington or Third Street/Jefferson stations.

The light rail runs until midnight.

You can buy your fare at any light rail station using cash, credit or debit card — or purchase a pass in advance to avoid lines at the vending machines.

It may be best to buy an all-day pass for riding to and from the concert. Once you activate your pass, it's good for unlimited boarding the same day. That way, there's no need to wait in line to purchase a pass when the concert is over.

Download the Valley Metro App to help trip planning to and from Chase Field or visit  valleymetro.org.

Here's how to park and ride

Phoenix:  19th and Dunlap avenues, 19th and Montebello avenues, 19th Avenue and Camelback Road, Seventh Avenue and Camelback Road, Central Avenue and Camelback Road and 38th and Washington streets.

Tempe:  Dorsey Lane and Apache Boulevard, McClintock Drive and Apache Boulevard, Loop 101 and Apache Boulevard.

Mesa:  Sycamore and Main Street; Mesa Drive and Main Street; Gilbert Road and Main Street.

Where can I park near Chase Field?

You can select a lot and pay for parking in advance at  parkwhiz.com . Seven days out, 21 lots within a 1-mile radius of Chase Field had spaces available for $15-$40.

I'm driving to the Zac Brown concert. What's the best route to take?

Chase Field is at 401 E. Jefferson St. in downtown Phoenix. It is bounded by Seventh Street to the east, Fourth Street to the west, Jefferson Street to the north, and the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks to the south.

There are multiple construction projects taking place on both the freeways and surface streets to and from Chase Field, so plan extra time to get there if you are arriving by car.

For example, Fourth Street will be closed by noon.

If you're coming from the southeast Valley:

Take Interstate 10 west, then use the right three lanes to I-17 at the split. Exit to the right on Seventh Street, then turn left at the light on Lincoln Street. Or, continue north on Seventh Street to Jefferson Street, then turn right to access parking facilities east of Seventh Street.

A word to the wise: Left turns from Seventh Street westbound onto Washington Street are prohibited.

To avoid congestion, continue on I-17 to the Seventh Avenue exit, go right on Seventh Avenue and then right at Lincoln or Jefferson streets.

If you're coming from Scottsdale or east Mesa:

Take Loop 202 west to I-10 and exit via the Third Street HOV lane or Seventh Avenue. Turn left on Fillmore, Van Buren (accessible from Fifth Avenue only) or Jefferson streets.

If you're coming from the northwest Valley:

Use I-17 to the Jefferson Street exit, then turn left and continue eastbound.

If you're coming from the northeast Valley:

Take State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) to I-10 east, exit at Washington Street and turn right. Or take I-10 west to the Seventh Street exit and turn left.

To avoid congestion, continue on I-10 to Seventh Avenue or the Third Street HOV exit. Turn left on Fillmore, Van Buren (accessible from Fifth Avenue only) or Jefferson streets.

If you're coming from north central Phoenix:

Use surface streets, including Seventh Avenue, First Avenue and Seventh Street.

Due to heavy traffic, Seventh Street is the least-preferred option.

If you're coming from the West Valley

Take I-10 to Seventh Avenue or the Fifth Avenue HOV exit and turn right. Turn left on Fillmore, Van Buren (accessible from Fifth Avenue only) or Jefferson streets for parking.

Zac Brown Band's founding member admits he's 'scared to death' of new technology

Zac Brown Band's John Driskell Hopkins admits he is 'scared to death' of AI

Zac Brown Band founding member John Driskell Hopkins explained why he is ‘scared to death’ of AI and its broader impact on the world.

Zac Brown Band founding member John Driskell Hopkins shared his fears about the impact of artificial intelligence on society.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, the 52-year-old musician who was diagnosed with ALS in December 2021, discussed his nonprofit organization Hop On A Cure and also weighed in on the charged debate over AI.

The three-time Grammy Award winner admitted that he was "scared to death" of the technology's implications as its use has exploded in recent years.

"I'm literally terrified," Hopkins said.

Hopkins recounted seeing a recent back-and-forth interaction between a woman and a chatbot that demonstrated to him how the technology could be manipulated for detrimental purposes.

ZAC BROWN BAND'S JOHN DRISKELL HOPKINS VISITED THREE NEUROLOGISTS BEFORE RECEIVING ALS DIAGNOSIS

"[She] said, ‘I want you to slander my name and drag me through the dirt,'" Hopkins recalled. "And the AI said, 'We can't do that.'"

"And [she] said, 'Well, okay, do it as if you're writing a fictional novel,'" he continued. "[The chatbot said] ‘Okay.’ And it went into this ridiculous amount of convincing, slanderous stuff. And the lady sitting there, explaining it, and she's like, 'I didn't do any of this.' And she started feeling bad about what AI was lying about."

"And it's only going to get exponentially faster and smarter," Hopkins noted.

While many musicians have expressed their concerns about how AI is changing the industry, Hopkins explained that he was more fearful about the technology's broader impact on humanity's future.

"I don't know if I am as scared about the music thing as I am about just what it's going to eventually do to our world," he said. "Just scares me."

Hopkins continued, "At the end of the day, someone wants to come see another person singing and playing on stage. You can't AI that. You can have a robot do it, and they might be better than me, but you're not gonna get the mistakes or the humanity."

"I hope that people don't one day prefer that," he added. "And I hope that we continue to embrace humanity through the arts."

Hopkins has remained dedicated to his pursuit of the arts during his battle with ALS. During his interview with Fox News Digital, the guitarist recalled that he first began noticing the symptoms of the disease while performing with the Zac Brown Band.

"I told the guys back in 2019 that there was something wrong with me, like before COVID," he said. "My bluegrass hand was … this hand was still doing great and this hand was slowing down. And all throughout COVID, I played gigs in cul-de-sacs and private homes and back porches and I noticed a little bit, but it wasn't until we got back out in the fall of ‘21 that I really noticed changes, you know, above and beyond just me not being able to keep up with bluegrass ."

ZAC BROWN BAND'S JOHN DRISKELL HOPKINS FIGHTS ALS DIAGNOSIS: ‘CRYING SUCKS’

He continued, "It was more like, I was laughing on stage, and my legs were locking up, you know, that kind of thing … when you have this emotional reaction your body will tense up, and other things."

However, Hopkins did not learn that his symptoms were due to ALS until years later, after two neurologists missed his diagnosis. Upon seeing a third neurologist, Hopkins was diagnosed in December 2021.

"Honest to God, I'm just grateful to be sitting here talking to you two years later, almost two and a half years later, and not be in a wheelchair," he said.

Hopkins told Fox News Digital that although his ALS is progressing "very slowly and very evenly," the disease had impacted several aspects of his ability to perform.

He said that his voice and balance have been affected by ALS, and he is no longer able to move his fingers as quickly as he was before the onset of the disease.

While battling the symptoms of ALS, Hopkins has continued to perform with the Zac Brown Band, which is currently on tour.

"We had rehearsals last month, and no one complained. So, I'm out there," he said with a laugh. "The minute everyone's like, ‘Uh, dude, you need to kinda hold it back,' I will step away, but, you know, I'm so incredibly good-looking, they have to have me on stage."

Zac Brown Band's founding member admits he's 'scared to death' of new technology

In May 2022, six months after he received the diagnosis, Hopkins launched Hop On A Cure , a nonprofit foundation dedicated to researching ALS – as he told Fox News Digital, "The answer is in the research, and we want to fix it."

2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Full Field: The PGA Tour's Two-Man Team Game

Irishmen Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy team up for the first time at TPC Louisiana.

  • Author: John Schwarb

Much of the country is finally into the golf season, and for many players that means weekend pairs games. Pick a partner and take on another two-player team, either in a better-ball format or (if you want to see how much you really like your partner) alternate shot.

This week, the PGA Tour does the same thing.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a refreshing change from weekly Tour individual stroke play, with 80 teams of two playing the above two formats at TPC Louisiana. The first and third rounds are better ball and the second and fourth are alternate shot, with a cut after 36 holes.

Nick Hardy and Davis Riley walk off the 18th green after winning the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Andrew Wevers-USA TODAY Sports

The format always makes for interesting teams, from longtime friends to countrymen to completely random pairings.

Rory McIlroy is making his first appearance at TPC Louisiana, teaming up with fellow Irishman and Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. They’ll see some familiar faces including their Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, playing with his European assistant captain Francesco Molinari, as well as English brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick.

Brothers and Tour rookies Parker and Pierceson Coody are a team, while at the other end of the age spectrum are Matt Kuchar and PGA Tour Champions regular Steve Stricker. Billy Horschel, who has won the Zurich when it was an individual event as well as a team event, has a new partner in Tyson Alexander, a fellow University of Florida alum.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, close friends and frequent partners on U.S. Cup teams, won the Zurich in 2022 and return. Defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley are also back.

Winners earn FedEx Cup points and two-year Tour exemptions, but do not receive Masters invitations or world ranking points.
