Travel Tyrol

Austria travel blog, swarovski crystal worlds austria: get ready to be dazzled, marvel at the wonder of the world-famous crystals.

The Swarovski Crystal Worlds or Kristallwelten near Innsbruck in Austria is unlike any other tourist attraction in the world. Imagine an underground tour or magical chambers filled with differently themed crystal artwork underneath a fairytale landscape in an Alpine setting. That is what you can expect on a visit to the Crystal Worlds in Wattens.

Swarovski Giant

To find the Swarovski Crystal Worlds (Kristallwelten) at our front door was one of the biggest surprises when we arrived in Innsbruck . I never knew Swarovski crystals came from Austria, never mind the village of Wattens in Tyrol . My guess was always Eastern Europe.

Given the fact that  Daniel Swarovski , the glass cutter who founded the company in 1895, was born in what is now the Czech Republic, I suppose I wasn’t entirely wrong.

We´ve been to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds countless times at different times of the year, and they always manage to surprise us with something new. That is why we will keep on going back.

Swarovski Crystal Worlds Basics

Now available – online tickets.

It´s now possible to conveniently buy your tickets online to avoid queueing on the day of your visit and spend more time marvelling at what´s inside the Swarovski Crystal Worlds.

Chambers of Wonder

To me, the Swarovski Kristallwelten is about marvelling at what a bunch of highly creative people did with millions of dashing crystals.

The main attraction is the chambers of wonder in the belly of the Giant , a creation of André Heller. The Giant supposedly watches over his treasures – which are hidden beneath the earth – after collecting them on a world journey.

Each chamber of wonder was created by a renowned artist, designer, or architect to show off the brilliance of Swarovski crystals. The 18th chamber of wonder, the light installation Umbra by James Turrell, was opened in April 2022.

In 2021, a chamber of wonder called the Art of Performance , featuring iconic outfits worn by famous actors and musicians on screen and the stage, are exhibited against a dazzling backdrop of Swarovski crystals.

swarovski innsbruck tour

Original outfits worn by Elton John and Cher are exhibited alongside recreations of Marlene Dietrich’s 1932 Blonde Venus outfit, which marks the first time Swarovski appeared on the big screen.

You´ll also get to see Marilyn Monroe’s “Birthday Dress” that wowed not only John F. Kennedy but the world at the president’s legendary birthday dinner. More impressive is Katy Perry’s Moschino Chandelier gown that she wore to the 2019 Met Ball. Other notable items on display include Björk’s Foraeva dress and pieces by Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

Snow in Swarovski Crystal Worlds

And if you want to experience snow all year round, all you have to do is stand around the Silent Light crystal tree created by the Dutch designer Tord Boontje. It is cloaked in ice-cold snow by TechnoAlpin in a chamber of wonder where the temperature can fall to as low as -10° C.

Kristallwelten Garden Highlights

After leaving the belly of the giant, there is a vast park area to explore. My highlight is the Crystal Cloud floating above a black mirror pool. The “clouds” are covered in 800,000 hand-mounted Swarovski Crystals.

When he was younger, M loved the four-story play tower for kids. He also likes running around in the labyrinth. The latter, in the shape of a hand, is another design by André Heller.

swarovski innsbruck tour

Next to the labyrinth, a black-and-white carousel by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon stands in contrasts with the surrounding greenery of the garden. The monochrome design incorporates 15 million Swarovski crystals across 12 ceiling panels and 16 wall panels. There is no additional cost to ride the carousel.

Recently, the excavations of Roman walls which were discovered while doing improvements in 2014 have also been opened to the public. They offer an important window on the history of the area. Apart from the walls, a cache of 702 Roman silver coins was found in what is thought to have been a small village along a main Roman thoroughfare.

Seasonal Surprises

To keep things interesting, in addition to the permanent exhibitions, a variety of events for young and old are held at the Kristallwelten throughout the year.

For example, the Circus Theater Roncalli have been providing summer entertainment for a number of years. They turn the gardens into a circus ring with 16 shows daily that are included in the regular entrance fee.

From November to February, the park surrounding the giant is transformed into a winter wonderland. Luminous animal figures by Tord Boontje and a 13-metre-high Christmas tree are just some of the elements that brighten up cold days.

swarovski innsbruck tour

Crystal Worlds Shop

I guess the highlight for shopaholics would be the Swarovski Crystal Worlds shop, which is home to one of the world’s largest collections of Swarovski products. It is a unique opportunity to buy items that are exclusively available in Wattens and Austria.

And when you´re done shopping, there is a Crystal Bar in the store where you can buy snacks or drinks from 10:00 to 16:00 daily.

Tips for Visiting Swarovski Crystal Worlds

  • You can visit the Swarovski Kristallwelten Store and Daniels Kristallwelten Café and Restaurant without having to buy a ticket for the Swarovski Crystal Worlds.

  • The Freizeitticket Tirol , which is available to residents of Tyrol, includes 3 free entrances to Swarovski Kristallwelten per year.
  • If you´re hungry for something more than a snack at the Crystal Bar, Daniels Kristallwelten is the onsite restaurant and café in the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. They serve international and Tyrolean dishes with a focus on seasonal cuisine. The in-house patisserie also bakes delicious cakes, macarons, muffins or cupcakes.

Visiting Swarovski Crystal World – Innsbruck, Austria

The Crystal Dome at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Blingtastic Swarovski crystals, a light exhibition, intriguing modern art and stunning gardens,  Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) is one of the top places to visit near Innsbruck!

Innsbruck was the final stop on my whirlwind trip around Austria. After visiting Graz and Salzburg , I wondered what this city shrouded by snow-capped mountains would have to offer. I knew it as a winter destination, with several ski resorts just a short journey from the city centre, but what about in the warmer months?

After a day of sightseeing, checking out the colourful houses lining the River Inn, walking along Maria Theresien Street and catching a cable car up Nordkette, I had four hours free. You guys told me to visit Swarovski Crystal Worlds (Swarovski Kristallwelten) and I listened!

Exploring Innsbruck in Austria

I’ll admit I had a few preconceptions before my visit. I’ve never been a huge Swarovski fan. I like jewellery, but nothing hugely blingy. I worried this Swarovski museum might be a tourist attraction with the principal aim to push gift shop purchases. Surprisingly, it wasn’t, and actually, it was really rather magical!

Visiting Swarovski Kristallwelten in Austria

I’ll add one thing here. A lot of visitors rushed through in tours, didn’t read any of the information on the screens, and probably just saw a pretty light or exhibit, snapped a photo, and moved on. I decided to take my time. I also took a tripod.

Photography is really important to me, and as I was travelling solo I really wanted to capture some great shots of me exploring the magic. It turned out to be a lifesaver… as most of the exhibition is in the dark, slow shutter speed is required, and hand held shots would have suffered by losing their crispness.

There are 16 rooms in Swarovski’s Chambers of Wonder , each designed by great artists from around the world. Having visited several modern art museums, I’d compare this experience as being closer to that rather than a touristy theme park (which was what I worried it could be!)

Without giving too much away, here are a few highlights from my morning at Swarovski Crystal Worlds… and scroll down to find out useful info including ticket prices and the shuttle bus.

The Swarovski Giant

The entrance to Swarovski Kristallwelten features an impressive giant! He’s pretty imposing, with a waterfall cascading from his mouth. It was designed by multimedia artist André Heller to celebrate Swarovski’s hundredth anniversary in 1995. You can see the Swarovski factory close by too.

Say hello to the largest hand cut crystal in the world! Me: How much is it worth? Staff: It’s priceless Me: *puts credit card away*

The Crystal Dome

The crystal dome made up of 595 mirrors was one of my favourite rooms. It was pure magic. Everything reflected, the colours kept changing, and when I had it all to myself I felt like I’d been enclosed in my very own crystal! Needless to say, a lot of photos followed.

The Crystal Dome at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Another of my favourites, this room starts with a waterfall and then opens out into a magical scene of lights, poles (to symbolise trees) and mirrors. The reflections are mesmerising, and while it’s a small space, the fantastical forest feels vast. It’s a room made for photography too!

Eden at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Reflections

This room was quite eerie, with enchanting music and constantly changing colours and lights.A dorning each of the 48 blocks made from crystal were key moments from history. It wiggled around corners and certainly left an impression!

Reflections at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Crystal Forest

The final room, Crystal Forest contains a large illuminated ball made of 10,000 crystals, and strands of light stretching the length of the room. I read that it represented a sea monster, and all the elements… but as with all modern art, everyone comes to their own conclusions… so hello giant tassel!

Crystal Forest at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Cinderella’s Slipper

The final room contained some famous items from Swarovski’s history, with my favourite being Cinderella’s slipper (from the 2015 film). Cut from a crystal, it glinted and shone in the light! I wonder if it’d fit my foot? Size 5?

Crystal Clouds

swarovski innsbruck tour

I made sure I had time to check out the outside areas too. There are beautiful gardens with a maze, kids play area and even a waterfall. My favourite outdoor feature were the crystal clouds, which stood tall over a pool of water. Cue magical reflections as the crystals caught the sunlight!

One of the most incredible things about Swarovski Kristallwelten is its location in between snow-capped mountains in the town of Wattens near Innsbruck. It really does provide a stunning backdrop.

Thank you very much for this wonderful and sparkling article Chloe! If you are visiting Austria again in the future, please contact us, we would be glad to welcome you again! Best, Theresa, Social Media Team

Ahhh thank you so much for commenting. I’m really glad you liked it. I really enjoyed visiting 🙂

we visited a couple of years ago but unfortunately we could not get into the gift shop without paying to visit. As we were not interested in the ‘World’ €38 seemed rather expensive to enter a probably expensive shop.

The cafe was pleasant and reasonably priced however.

Thanks for your comment John. I can see it would be disappointing if you just went for the gift shop! But you’d miss a lot by not seeing the whole art display in the World.

Glad to know we can bring a tripod! Planning on visiting tomorrow!

Oh yay – have a great time!

Are the crystals cheaper, same or more expensive than in the United States?

Hi Colleen, I’m not too sure right now, so you’ll need to contact them directly to check!

Not even sure how I ended up on your page but wow am I glad I did!! Holy cow is that place fantastic!!! I wish I could go there but alas I will just have to live it through your photos. I will be further researching to see if I can find some videos as well. If anyone thinks Disney is magical….they haven’t seen this place LOL.

Thanks Kellie – amazing place isn’t it! I thought it was magical too!

Was just looking for info on the Swarovski palace and loved reading your article! Was very helpful for my daughter and I to get a sense of things as we plan our week around Garmisch this summer.

That’s lovely to hear! Have a great time.

INNSBRUCK AND SWAROVSKI CRYSTAL WORLD

A water-spouting giant, a maze, a golden roof ….

We start from Salzburg and take a picturesque way over Bavaria (Germany) to Tyrol. We will pass the impressive mountain range Kaisergebirge, the lovely city Kufstein until we reach the first highlight in Wattens, the

Swarovski Crystal World

A water-spouting Giant welcomes and lures you into an interior full of surprises, magic, light and wonders. It is fascinating for the young and the young at heart as well as for all who love crystals in most elaborate form.

Being at Swarovski Crystal World is an event: Crystal works of art by well-known artists. 500 Crystals cover the dome and reflect light in all facets accentuated with music. The Crystaloscope is the biggest kaleidoscope in the world and carries one off to the harmonizing power of crystals. In the Crystal Theater ones own fantasies take centre stage. You can have a look onto the giant’s belongings and marvel at an aria performed by the extraordinary soprano Jessye Norman and captured by Andre Heller in film before you enter the World of Wonders and the Crystal Forest.

Even the Crystal Stage is much more than a store. Newly designed in 2007 it is the biggest Swarovski shop in the world with a unique selection imbedded in a fiction starting at night with a starry sky and guiding you through dawn and sunrise into a dome of altering daylight.

Finally the Giant’s garden awaits you with a maze, an alpine garden and extraordinary objects, insights and outlooks.

From Wattens we head for Innsbruck. Before entering the city you already can see one of the monuments, the New Berg Isel Ski Jump, venue of the Olympic Ski jumping competitions and the annual Four Hills Tournament in January. The star architect Zaha Hadid designed the spectacular New Ski Jump (2002; the first ski jump was erected in 1925). But the site is also a historic one as Berg Isel was a battlefield in the Tyrolian War of Independence in 1809.

Innsbruck City The “Capital of the Alps” is a beautiful old town surrounded by the high mountains of the southern Alps. In olden days it was the seat of the Tyrolean sovereigns and thus bestows to us a lot of impressive buildings and a charming townscape. Because of that and worldwide known as scene of the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976 in present days it is a much sought-after tourist destination throughout the year. On this tour we will take you to the very centre of the city where you can stroll around on your own and discover Innsbruck’s attractions, e.g. the world famous Golden Roof, St. Anna’s Column, the Imperial Palace and Gardens, the Court Church (with the most prominent tomb memorial for an emperor in Europe), the St. Jakob’s Cathedral, the “Golden Eagle”-Inn, the Helbling-House, the Ottoburg, Ambras Palace and Gardens and much more.

An option is also to visit the Grassmayr Bell Foundry. 400 years of experience make this company famous and Grassmayr Bells can be heard in more than 100 countries all over the world. The Bell Museum shows in a unique way the history and the art of bell foundry combined with a sound room. Many guests consider it to be a great experience which shouldn’t be missed.

On the way back to Salzburg we chose a route partly along the river Inn via Rosenheim and the lake Chiemsee (see also the Tour Lake Chiemsee and Palaces).

  • normanp311 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful place to visit. We toured the township of Innsbruck and with a tour group of only 11. Getting there we travelled the country roads, through the Tyrol district. The views were amazing. Mountains; villages; rolling hills; pristine rivers. Cold and a little cloudy but still fine for sightseeing. We spent our time mainly in the ‘old city’ part of Innsbruck (it has hosted 2x Winter Olympics); and is a popular ski resort destination. Totally unexpected, we came across a formal installation of the new district flag - with traditional uniforms; musicians; flower maidens; riflemen - all being very offical. Pretty cool. • periandro 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Breathtaking views The Bergisel is a hill in Innsbruck; it's a nice beauty spot from where fantastic views can be contemplated. There is a huge ramp for holding ski jumping competitions. The ramp was designed by the architect Zaha Hadid and was inaugurated in 2003 to replace a smaller one which didn't meet the new ski jumping requisite requirements. The ski resort lies in an exhilarating part of the city of Innsbruck. Four battles fought in 1809 between Tyrolean rebels under the command of the freedom fighter Andreas Hofer and the Bavarian troops took place in the Bergisel area. A monument dedicated to that hero erected to commemorate the battles stands on the spot. About that particular personage, on the other hand, two fantastic pictures are displayed in the Innsbruck Zeughaus Museum: a portrait by Jakob Placidus Altmuter and that one depicting Hofer's execution in Mantua. The Bergisel Ski Jump is an architectural masterpiece. Apart from the ramp, there is a large stadium, to wit, the Olympic Ice Stadium, as well as the Tivoli Stadium. Many sport events take place in that ice complex, it being one of the most important winter sport facilities in the world. The Olympic ski jump has already been held three times in Bergisel, namely in 1964, 1976 and 2012. In addition to the sport facilities concerned, there is a restaurant on the top of the architectural structure. That restaurant has a terrace from which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Innsbruck and of the landscape on the other side of the terrace. In order to accede to the restaurant and terrace it's necessary to take a funicular-like elevator and then a lift up to the restaurant level. During the elevator trip one can start enjoying the every time more wonderful view. Once on the terrace the view is, as stated above, breathtaking. From there it's possible to see the splendid Wilten Basilica and the Wilten Abbey, as well as other fantastic buildings lying further in the city center, such as St. James's Cathedral, the Jesuit church, the Hoffburg, and in general most of the Innsbruck historical center. The visit to Bergisel and particularly the trip to the mentioned terrace is thus thus highly recommendable if only to have the possibility to contemplate such an enchanting sight. • Melovechocolate 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Peter Heuritsch had so many interesting stories!!! Peter was by far one of the best tour guides we've ever had. He mentioned that he had to re-study European history for two years before being able to get a certification as a tour guide, and it showed. He was a wealth of information, and believe that what he taught us during the tour, our kids would never had learned in any American history class. Peter gave both historic facts/events as well as his family's perspective on life in Austria in the 20th century. Perhaps we enjoyed it because we love history and enjoy the details, if you love history, Peter is your guide! We loved him. Read more Written July 20, 2018
