A very well organised tour with the same driver throughout. Guide provided in Agra; we had one of the few female guides in the industry who was lovely and a guide provided at the location on the way back. Only suggestion would be for the company to have Delhi based driver or provide the driver with accommodation prior and after pick up of guests.

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

I had a great time on this tour, although I was a bit surprised when I realised it would only be me (I was expecting to be with other people). The driver, Pradeep, was excellent and he made me feel safe at all times. Every day I was joined by a different tour guide and they were all very knowledgeable, their english was perfect and I learnt a great deal from them, you can tell they love what they do and love to show people their country. The hotels were OK, maybe i would upgrade to 4 star next time as some were not super clean. The only thing is that I had upgraded to a single supplement but it was a bit of a waste of money as i was the only one on the tour, I wish I had been told that before the tour started. As a solo female traveller I would recommend this tour, just be advised that you will probably be the only one on the tour! India is an amazing country, I obviously only scratched the surface of what it has to offer, but it was an excellent introduction and I hope to be back at some point, there's so much more to see.

What people love about taj mahal tours.

Aahil’s communication with me before, during and after the trip was amazing. He answered all my questions in a timely manner. The driver DANISH was on time, his car was immaculate and his driving was very safe. At the end of my tour, I discovered I left a pair of prescription glasses in his car. I texted Aahil, who then contacted Danish. Danish spent an extra half hour in Delhi traffic to return back to my hotel to drop off my missing pair of sunglasses. He saved my trip. My tour guide in Agra was Saeed. Saeed has been a tour guide for over 35 years. On the first day we discussed my expectations for the Taj Mahal. I laughingly told him that I wanted to sit on the “Lady Diana bench” and take pictures with no one in the background. We laughed because over 40,000 people a day visit Taj and it’s uncommon to take them without people. At the Taj, Saeed respectfully made his way to the front of every line to make sure that I got amazing photos. He knew photo spots that others did not know about and he knew when areas were too crowded and allowed time to circle back to those spots later when it was less crowded. He took my camera and started snapping photos of me in various spots.. He took very unique photos with very few people in the background. He knew exactly what I wanted and went above and beyond my expectation for the trip. His knowledge of the Taj, Fort Agra, Baby Taj and Agra as outstanding. He is a true professional. I’ve circumnavigated the world twice and this tour was BY FAR the most amazing tour I’ve taken. Thank you Aahil, Danish and Saeed!
The tour was very nice and everything was organised perfectly. I recommend it, especially to couples. The guides were both very competent and helpful. The driver also gave us a very comfortable trip. I recommend it.
Great tour , tour guides are excellent learned a lot about the Golden triangle. Our driver Mr Pushpendra who was with us for the whole tour was great, on time pick up and drove us safely to and from the hotels and back to the airport. I would highly recommend this tour for first timers in India specially if you wanted to learn about culture and history

Tour Packages to Taj Mahal

From the banks of the Yamuna River, the Taj Mahal like a dream castle. It is India's most well-known landmark and one of the world's Seven Wonders. The building, which dates from 1632, is actually a tomb that houses the body of Mumtaz Mahal, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan's wife. It was erected as a tribute to his love for her. It's built of marble and took 22 years and 20 000 people to build. The Taj Mahal's extraordinary detail simply has to be seen to be appreciated; words cannot do it justice.

Taj Mahal Tours

The Taj Mahal, the most popular tourist attraction in Agra, is the most visited monument. The Taj Mahal, which has its roots in the Mughal era's history, is Agra's most spontaneous attraction. The Golden Triangle is made up of Agra, Delhi, and Jaipur, displaying the liveliness of the places and making it a popular holiday destination! If you wish to spend quality time with your family or spouse in the heart of Agra, surrounded by the white marble monument with amazing architecture, book one of Swastik Holiday's many exclusive Taj Mahal packages.

Agra is located in Uttar Pradesh, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of Delhi. It's part of the well-known Golden Triangle Tourist destination in India. Explore our travel packages to Taj Mahal at Swastik Holiday.

From November to February is the greatest season to visit; otherwise, it can be too hot or too rainy. However, you'll be able to snag some fantastic off-season deals.

The Taj Mahal appears to change colour as the light changes throughout the day. Getting up early and spending the morning there is certainly worth the effort, as it is magnificently revealed. Visiting early in the morning will also allow you to avoid the massive throngs that begin to arrive later in the morning.

Getting There

A day trip from Delhi can take you to the Taj Mahal. Rail connections between Agra and other cities are excellent. High-speed Shatabdi Express trains run between Delhi and Varanasi, as well as cities in Rajasthan.

The Yamuna Expressway, which opened in August 2012, has cut the time it takes to travel from Delhi to Agra by car to under three hours. It begins in Noida and costs 415 rupees per car for a one-way journey (665 rupees round trip). More information on hiring a car and driver can be found here.

If taking the train is not an option, the bus is a suitable alternative. Every hour during the day, comfortable, air-conditioned Volvo buses depart from New Delhi's Anand Vihar terminal. The cost per person is approximately 700 rupees. The buses travel along the Yamuna Expressway and make a 30-minute halt at Vaango Restaurant for a snack and potty break (the toilets are clean).

You can also fly from a large Indian city or take a tour from Delhi.

Opening Hours of Taj Mahal

Every day, except Friday (closed), the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, usually about 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every full moon, from 8.30 p.m. to 12.30 a.m., as well as two days before and two days after the full moon, the Taj Mahal is open for night viewing (a total of five days). Every year, during the holy month of Ramadan, night watching is prohibited.

Entry Fees and Information

The cost of a ticket is 1,100 rupees for foreigners and 50 rupees for Indians. Children under the age of 15 are admitted for free. Tickets are available at ticket booths near the entrance gates and online at this website. (Please note that tickets for the Taj Mahal are no longer available at Agra Fort or other sites, and there is only a little discount if you visit many monuments on the same day.

The foreigner's ticket includes shoe covers, a bottle of water, an Agra tourist map, and transportation to the entry gate by bus or golf cart. It also gives ticket holders the opportunity to enter the Taj Mahal ahead of any Indian ticket holders who are currently in line.

For a half-hour admission, visitors pay 750 rupees while Indians pay 510 rupees for Night Viewing tickets. Children between the ages of three and fifteen must pay 500 rupees. These tickets must be obtained one day in advance at the Archaeological Survey of India office on Mall Road between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Due to pollution, vehicles are not permitted within 500 metres of the Taj Mahal. South, East, and West are the three entrance gates.

The main gate through which the bulk of local Indian visitors enter is the West gate, which has the longest line-ups throughout the day. It is, however, the preferable alternative at morning to avoid the East entrance congestion.

Foreign tourists prefer the East entrance because it is closest to a number of well-known hotels. Except at sunrise, when huge groups like to arrive, it normally has shorter lines. It's still the finest entry point if you buy your ticket the day before. For individuals who are unable or unwilling to walk, buses, golf carts, and bike rickshaws are available.

The South gate is the one that gets the least amount of traffic. It is liked by budget and independent visitors since it is adjacent to a bustling market area where many of the cheap hotels are located. It does not, however, open until 8 a.m. The inner compound is accessed through a massive sandstone doorway.

Foreigners have their own ticket desks at both the East and West gates.

Security at the Taj Mahal

At the Taj Mahal, strict security is in place, with checkpoints at the entrances. You will have your bag inspected and searched. Inside, large bags and day packs are not permitted. Only small bags with necessary supplies are allowed. Per person, this includes a cell phone, a camera, and a water bottle. Edibles, tobacco products, lighters, electrical equipment (such as phone chargers, headphones, iPads, and torches), knives, and photo tripods are not permitted within. During night viewing sessions, cell phones are also prohibited, while cameras are permitted. At the entry gates, there are luggage storage facilities.

Guides and Audio Guides

If you wish to gaze at the Taj Mahal without the distraction of a tour guide, AudioCompass, a government-approved company, offers a low-cost official Taj Mahal audio guide on its cell phone app. It's available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese, among other foreign and Indian languages.

See the Taj Mahal Without Going Inside

You can get a magnificent view of the Taj from across the river bank if you don't want to pay the high admission fee or fight the throng. This is a great place to see the sunset. Mehtab Bagh, a 25-acre Mughal garden complex just across from the monument, is one of them. Foreigners pay 250 rupees, while Indians pay 20 rupees, and the park is open until sunset. Unfortunately, to prevent tourists from strolling along the river, an unattractive barbed wire fence has been erected across it.

A row boat can be rented and used on the river. Follow the route that runs along the Taj Mahal's eastern wall to the riverbank temple, where you'll find boatmen.

On the Taj Mahal's eastern side, there's also a little-known abandoned watchtower over a sandy area. It's an excellent spot for a spectacular sunset view of the monument. From the East Gate, head east and take the first right at the fork in the road. To enter, you must pay the official fee of 50 rupees.

Cleaning of the Taj Mahal's Exterior

In 2018, the Taj Mahal underwent its first full cleaning to eliminate pollution-induced yellow discolouration and restore the marble to its original bright white tone. A natural clay paste was put to the monument's façade to achieve this. The main dome's clay packing will continue, and it will be done in sections, beginning at the front of the monument.

Every year, from February 18 to 27, the Taj Mahotsav takes held in Shilpgram, Agra, near the Taj Mahal. The event focuses on arts and crafts, Indian culture, and re-enacting the Mughal era. It begins with a magnificent procession with elephants, camels, and drummers. There are camel rides available, as well as games for the youngsters and a food fair. The location is significant because it is thought to be where the artisans who built the Taj Mahal originally resided.

Life is short, and the world is vast, as the saying goes. So why not take advantage of the opportunity to travel, even if just for a short time? You may have a restricted amount of time and energy at times. Even so, with Taj Mahal Tour, you may appreciate the beauty of travel.

If you are just in Delhi for a short time or are considering a short trip to India, don't miss our best Taj Mahal tour package, Book Now.

The Ultimate Guide to the Taj Mahal in India

taj mahal tourist package

The Taj Mahal looms fairytale-like from the banks of the Yamuna River. It's India’s most recognized monument and is also one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The monument dates back to 1632 and is actually a tomb that contains the body of Mumtaz Mahal—the wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He had it built as an ode to his love for her. It's made out of marble and took 22 years and 20 000 workers to complete. Words cannot do the Taj Mahal justice, its incredible detail simply has to be seen to be appreciated.

Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) from Delhi. It's part of India's popular Golden Triangle Tourist Circuit.

The best time is from November to February, otherwise it can be unbearably hot or rainy. You'll be able to get some excellent off-season discounts though.

The Taj Mahal appears to gradually alter its color in the changing light of the day. It’s well worth the effort to get up early and spend sunrise there, as it majestically reveals itself. Visiting around dawn will also enable you to beat the huge crowds that start arriving later in the morning.

Getting There

The Taj Mahal can be visited on a day trip from Delhi. Agra is well connected by rail. The main railway station is Agra Cantt. High speed Shatabdi Express services operate from Delhi, Varanasi, and cities in Rajasthan.

  • Find out the best trains from Delhi to Agra .

The Yamuna Expressway opened in August 2012 and has reduced the travel time by road from Delhi to Agra to under three hours. It starts from Noida and a toll of 415 rupees per car for a one way trip (665 rupees round trip) is payable. Read more about hiring a car and driver.

The bus is a good option if getting a train isn't possible. Comfortable, air-conditioned Volvo buses depart from Anand Vihar terminal in New Delhi every hour during the day. The cost is about 700 rupees per person. The buses go via the Yamuna Expressway and stop at Vaango restaurant for a 30 minute snack and restroom break (the toilets are clean).

Alternatively you can fly from major Indian cities, or take a tour from Delhi.

Taj Mahal Tours

Viator (in conjunction with Tripadvisor) offers a popular and highly rated Private Day Tour to Agra and the Taj Mahal from Delhi, as well as a combined Day Tour to Agra and Fatehpur Sikri and Day Tour to Agra with Culture Walk. It's also possible to see the Taj Mahal at night during the full moon on this 2 Day Private Tour of Agra from Delhi.

Alternatively, see the Taj Mahal on one of these recommended Agra day tours: 11 Hour Agra Day Tour including Sunrise and Sunset at Taj Mahal ,  Private Taj Mahal and Agra Fort Tour including meal with a view and optional professional photographer, or Sunrise or Sunset View of Taj Mahal .

If you're looking for an inexpensive tour option, U.P. Tourism runs daily, full-day sightseeing bus tours (except on Fridays), to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The cost is 750 rupees for Indians and 3,600 rupees for foreigners. The price includes transport, monument entry tickets, and guide fees.

Opening Hours

The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, usually around 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, except Friday (when it's closed for prayer). The Taj Mahal is also open for night viewing every full moon from 8.30 p.m. until 12.30 a.m., plus two days before and two days after the full moon (a total of five days). Night viewing is suspended during the holy month of Ramadan every year.

Entry Fees and Information

For foreigners, the ticket price is 1,100 rupees and for Indians, the price is 50 rupees. Children younger than 15 years can enter free. Tickets can be purchased at ticket offices near the entry gates or online at this website. (Do note, tickets for the Taj Mahal are no longer able to be purchased at Agra Fort or other monuments, and only offer a minimal discount if you wish to visit other monuments on the same day).

The foreigner's ticket includes shoe covers, bottle of water, tourist map of Agra, and bus or golf cart service to the entry gate. It also enables ticket holders to enter the Taj Mahal ahead of any Indian ticket holders already waiting in line.

Night Viewing tickets cost 750 rupees for foreigners and 510 rupees for Indians, for half an hour’s admittance. Children aged three to 15 years must pay 500 rupees. These tickets must be purchased between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., one day in advance from the Archaeological Survey of India office on Mall Road. See more details here, including night viewing dates.

Vehicles aren't allowed within 500 meters of the Taj Mahal because of pollution. There are three entry gates—South, East, and West.

  • The West gate is the main gate that the majority of local Indian visitors enter through, and it generally has the longest lines throughout the day. However, it's the preferred option at sunrise to avoid the crowds at the East gate.
  • The East gate is popularly used by foreign tourists, as it's closest to a number of well-known hotels. It usually has shorter queues except for at sunrise, when large groups tend to arrive there. If you buy your ticket in advance the day before, it's still the best entry point. Do note that the ticket office (in Shilpgram) is inconveniently located about 10 minutes walk from the gate. Buses, golf carts and cycle rickshaws are available for those that can't, or don't want to, walk.
  • The South gate is the least-used gate. It's close to a congested market area where many of the cheap hotels are situated, making it favored by budget and independent travelers. However, it doesn't open until 8 a.m. A huge sandstone gateway provides access to the inner compound there.

There are exclusive ticket counters for foreigners at both the East and West gates.

Security at the Taj Mahal

Strict security is in place at the Taj Mahal, and there are checkpoints at the entrances. Your bag will be scanned and searched. Large bags and day packs aren't allowed to be taken inside. Only small bags containing essential items are permitted. This includes one cell phone, a camera, and a water bottle per person. You can't bring edibles, tobacco products or lighters, electrical items (including phone chargers, headphones, iPads, torches), knives, or camera tripods inside. Cell phones are also banned during night viewing sessions, although cameras are still allowed. Luggage storage facilities are provided at the entry gates.

Guides and Audio Guides

If you want to marvel over the Taj Mahal without the distraction of having a tour guide with you, government-approved AudioCompass provides an inexpensive official Taj Mahal audio guide on its cell phone app. It's available in many foreign and Indian languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese.

See the Taj Mahal Without Going Inside

If you don’t want to pay the costly admission fee or battle the crowds, you can get a great view of the Taj from across the river bank. This is ideal for sunset. One such place there is Mehtab Bagh—a 25 acre Mughal garden complex directly opposite the monument. The entry cost is 250 rupees for foreigners and 20 rupees for Indians, and it's open until sunset. Unfortunately, an unsightly barbed wire fence has been erected beside the river to stop tourists from wandering along it.

It's possible to take a row boat out on the river. Head down the path along the eastern wall of the Taj Mahal to the riverside temple, where you will find boatmen.

There's also a little-known abandoned watchtower across a sandy field on the eastern side of the Taj Mahal. It's an ideal place for a splendid sunset view of the monument. Reach it by heading east from the East Gate and taking a right at the fork in the road. Pay the official 50 rupees to enter.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism's Taj Khema hotel offers notable vistas of the Taj Mahal from its gardens too. A new marble bench was installed on a mound there in early 2015, especially for visitors. Sip tea and watch the sunset! The hotel is located about 200 meters from the monument, on the eastern side. It's a government-run establish, so don't expect great service though.

Another option is the rooftop of the Saniya Palace hotel, on the southern side of the Taj Mahal.

Cleaning of the Taj Mahal's Exterior

The first thorough cleaning of the Taj Mahal to remove the yellow discoloration from pollution and restore the marble to its original brilliant white color occurred in 2018. To achieve this, a natural clay paste was applied to the monument's exterior. The clay packing of the main dome remains and is planned to be undertaken in stages, starting from the front of the monument.

Taj Mahotsav takes place at Shilpgram in Agra, right near the Taj Mahal, from February 18-27 each year. The focus of this festival is on arts, crafts, Indian culture, and recreating the Mughal Era. It gets underway with a spectacular procession that includes elephants, camels, and drummers. Camel rides are on offer, and there are also games for the kids and a food festival. The venue has special significance, as it's apparently located on the site where the artisans who built the Taj Mahal once lived.

Where to Stay

Unfortunately, many of the hotels in Agra are as uninspiring as the city itself. However, these top Agra hotels should help make your stay a memorable one. There are accommodations to suit all budgets and many have Taj views.

Dangers and Annoyances

Visiting the Taj Mahal can be overwhelming for all the wrong reasons. Be prepared to encounter plenty of beggars and touts there. According to this news report , it has become an increasingly troublesome problem, and many visitors go back home feeling cheated, threatened and abused. Touts operate in sophisticated gangs that have counterparts in other cities who identify potential targets at railway stations. Once the tourists reach Agra, the touts start pestering them by claiming that they are guides or taxi drivers. They commonly use ploys such as free taxi rides or the promise of heavy discounts.

Note: There are 24 hour official prepaid auto rickshaw and taxi booths just outside Agra railway station. Use these to avoid the hassle, and if you book a tour there check the quality of your vehicle to make sure it's satisfactory.

Do be sure to tell auto rickshaw drivers which Taj Mahal entry gate you wish to be taken to, otherwise it's likely that you'll find yourself dropped off in the area where expensive horse and cart or camel rides wait to take tour groups to the west gate.

Apparently, there are only 50-60 approved guides at the Taj Mahal. However, more than 3,000 touts posing as photographers, guides or middleman, openly solicit customers at the monument's three gates (especially at the western gate, which receives around 60-70% of visitors). Hundreds of hawkers (who pay bribes to the police) are also a problem at the Taj Mahal, despite being officially banned.

In addition, foreigners, particularly women and parents with young children, are frequently asked to pose for photographs (or even being photographed without permission) by other people including groups of guys. This can be intrusive and uncomfortable. This news article warns about selfie seekers at the Taj Mahal.

Lastly, do be aware of the notorious gem scam , which is alarming prevalent in Agra.

Where to Stay in Agra

What else is there to do in agra.

The Taj Mahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and on the top of everyone's list when visiting India. This incredible white marble structure is not only beautiful but is also a testament to the love that Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Built in the mid-1600s over a period of 22 years using 20,000 workers, the Taj is truly a testament to otherworldly beauty and architecture.

On this page, you'll find everything you need to know when visiting the Taj Mahal including where it is, how to get there, what to wear, entrance fees, the best time to visit, and other things to do nearby.

The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, India. Agra is a small city in North India a few hours drive or 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the capital of New Delhi. Agra is often visited on the Golden Triangle travel route which includes the most popular stops in India: Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

Agra was a very important city during the Mughal rule of North India, but since then has a decrease in political importance and today only has 1.7 million people. The Taj Mahal is located to the east of the city near the banks of the holy Yamuna River.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

Agra is normally visited by travelers on the Golden Triangle circuit because it is around 200 kilometers from both Delhi and Jaipur. You can also make a day trip from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj Mahal and then return to Delhi. We recommend staying in Agra for 1 or 2 days to see some of the other World Heritage Sites there such as the Agra Fort and Baby Taj.

You can reach Agra from Delhi by train. The high-speed Shatabdi Express has trains that run between Agra, Delhi, and other cities in Rajasthan. A train from Delhi to Agra will likely take around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

You can also travel to Agra from Delhi by private car on the Yamuna Expressway. If you book a Golden Triangle tour, traveling between the three cities by private car will be included in the price. The car journey from Delhi to Agra takes around 3 hours and is often more comfortable and convenient than traveling by train.

Once you reach Agra, the Taj Mahal will be easy to reach from your hotel by either private car or rickshaw. We recommend taking a private car with a guide in order to avoid scams at the entrance.

Best Time to Visit the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal can be visited all year round, but the best time to visit is from November to February . This period is during the winter months in India when the weather is cool and dry and the skies are clear.

This time of year is the high season for visiting the Taj, so you can expect there to be larger crowds visiting this world wonder. During December and January, the Taj Mahal is often shrouded by fog in the morning so if you want the perfect sunrise shot, its best to go in November or February.

You can also visit the Taj Mahal from March to May and June to October. March, April, and May are the hot season in Agra with temperatures reaching up to 40°C (104°F). During the hot season, we recommend visiting in the early morning to catch the beautiful sunrise and avoid the heat.

March is the best hot season month to visit because the temperatures are still manageable and the crowds are much smaller.

June to October is the rainy season in Agra. This season is slightly cooler than the hot season but is still warm and humid. Agra doesn't get as much rain as other parts of India. The wettest month in Agra is August with an average of 272mm (10.7 inches) of rain.

You can still see the Taj during the rainy season, but you will need to spend a few more days in Agra to make sure that you have time to see everything and avoid the showers.

September is a good month to go for affordable hotel rates and travel. The last two weeks of September are often dry. October is the beginning of the high season and hotel prices normally rise on the 1st of the month.

Get more information on the best time to visit the Taj Mahal in a day.

Taj Mahal Entrance Cost and Rules

The Taj Mahal is open from 6 am to 7 pm every day except for Fridays when it is closed for prayer. The Taj also reopens every day from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am for 4 nights around the full moon.

The price of entrance tickets into the Taj is 1,100 rupees ($15) for non-Indians. You can get a 50 rupee discount if you pay with a card. Children younger than 15 can enter for free whether they are foreigners or Indians. Your ticket comes with a water bottle, shoe covers, and a map of Agra. Shoe covers must be worn inside the main building of the Taj Mahal.

The full moon night viewing tickets cost a little less than day tickets. For foreigners, night entrance is 750 rupees ($10) .

Taj Mahal tickets can be purchased at the entrance gates or online.

There are three entrance gates into the Taj Mahal complex: South, East, and West. The West Gate is the main date and normally has the longest lines throughout the day. The South Gate is the least used as it is in the heart of a congested market and a little difficult to access. The East Gate is most used by foreign visitors because it is close to many nice hotels and often has shorter lines.

The Taj Mahal is India's most important monument and has high levels of security at the entrance. When entering the Taj, your bags will be searched and no large bags are allowed inside.

Other items that are not allowed inside the Taj include food, cigarettes and lighters, tripods, and lighting equipment. Cameras are also not allowed inside the mausoleum as taking photos of the inside is prohibited.

If you bring a big bag or backpack, you may want to store it in a locker outside the monument so as to decrease your time at the security check.

What to Bring with You to the Taj

Because security is so high at the Taj Mahal and many things are not allowed, it's a good idea to only bring a small bag with a few belongings. Some items you may want to bring when visiting the Taj include:

  • The Taj Mahal was constructed to be immensely beautiful. It is completely symmetrical and surrounded by gardens. The white walls of the Taj reflect the colors of the sky from orange in the early morning to dark blue at night.
  • The Taj Mahal is a tomb containing the bodies of emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal and is decorated to depict an image of heaven. The marble of the Taj is carved into beautiful floral designs and inlaid with semiprecious stones from Persia, Russia, Afghanistan, China, and the Indian Ocean.
  • The story of its creator, Shah Jahan, is a sad one with his son betraying him after the death of Mumtaz Mahal and locking him away in the tower of the Agra Fort where he could still see the Taj from a distance.

Sunblock is especially important during the hot season, but you should consider wearing it no matter what time of year you visit the Taj. The sun reflects off of the white marble walls and garden pools causing your skin to be more exposed to the sun's rays than normal.

Bug spray is also important, especially during the rainy season, as the Taj is located next to the Yamuna River and sometimes has many mosquitos.

What to Wear to the Taj Mahal

There is no dress code for entering the Taj Mahal, but even so, it is important to be respectful of the local culture. It's a good idea to wear loose and long clothing. For women, a loose long-sleeved shirt and loose pants or a skirt are perfect. This way, you will be respectful and still stay cool in Agra's hot climate.

The general rule for how to dress appropriately in India is to cover everything above the knee and your shoulders.

To enter the mosque that is located on the grounds of the Taj Mahal, women will need to cover their heads, shoulders, and knees.

Why You Should Book A Guided Tour

Visiting the Taj on a guided tour is the best way to see this world wonder. Guides will take you to the Taj in a private car and help you get your tickets and through security. They will also show you around the Taj Mahal and give you all the information you could want to know.

Guides can also protect you from the many notorious scammers and hawkers who hang out near the Taj Mahal trying to catch unaware tourists.

If you visit the Taj with a guide, it is best to book through your hotel or through a tour company on a Golden Triangle tour. Outside the Taj, many people pose as guides who are not actually qualified to do so. To avoid this scam, make sure to book beforehand.

If you choose not to use a guide at the Taj, just make sure to keep your wits about you and turn down anyone who asks for photos or to be your guide. You can purchase an audio guide at the entrance of the Taj for around 105 rupees. Audio guides are available in many languages including English, German, Spanish, and French.

How to See the Taj Mahal Without Going Inside

Besides entering the official Taj Mahal grounds, there are a few other ways in Agra to see the Taj Mahal .

One of the most popular Taj viewing points is from Mehtab Bagh which is a large Mughal garden located just across the Yamuna river. Entrance to Mehtab Bagh costs around 300 rupees ($4) and the garden provides incredible views of the world wonder. This is an especially great place to view the Taj during sunrise.

You can also see the Taj Mahal from many hotel rooftop restaurants in Agra. You can see the beautiful mausoleum for free from the roof of the Taj Ganj hotel. You can also get great views of the Taj from the dining room of the Oberoi Amarvilas luxury hotel.

Lastly, you can see the Taj Mahal at a distance from the windows of the Agra Fort . The Agra Fort was also partially built by Emperor Shah Jahan and is the building where he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb.

Because Agra is such a large tourist area in India, the city is full of hotels for all budgets many of which are located near the Taj Mahal and offer rooftop views. Luxury hotels are particularly popular in the city and are great places for fine dining and spa experiences.

The Oberoi Amarvilas is the best hotel in Agra for luxury experiences. It is located around 600 meters from the Taj Mahal and its architecture was inspired by the monument. The hotel has fountains pavilions, gardens, and pools. It also has an incredible dining room where you can sip champagne while watching the sunset behind the Taj.

Another great luxury hotel in the city is Jaypee Palace. This hotel sits on 25 acres of and that is full of pools, gardens, and palm trees. Jaypee Palace is located in the center of Agra and close to all major attractions. They also have an outdoor dining location that features nightly performances.

If you are looking to stay in a resort, our favorites are the Trident and ITC Mughal. If you are looking for more affordable options then the DoubleTree by Hilton is a great one that also offers views of the Taj Mahal.

While the Taj Mahal is without a doubt the main attraction in Agra, there are plenty of other things to see in this ancient Mughal capital.

The Agra Fort is also a stunning location and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built in the 16th-century. Inside the fort, you see a number of palaces that were built by different Mughal kings and also the place where Shah Jahan was imprisoned.

If you are interested in beautiful architecture, you can also go and see the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah . This tomb is only about a 25-minute drive from the Taj Mahal and is often called the "Baby Taj" because it was one of the architectural inspirations for the world wonder. This tomb contains the grandfather of Shah Jahan and was the first Mughal structure to be made of white marble.

Another UNESCO World Heritage site near Agra is Fatehpur Sikri which is the ruins of an ancient city that was originally built by the Mughal emperor Akbar as a place for his family to live. The city is made of red sandstone and contains the beautiful ruins of palaces, mosques, and homes.

If you are looking for some socially responsible activities, you can check out the Elephant Conservation Centre which is run by Wildlife SOS and works on the rehabilitation and care of rescue elephants. The city is also home to Sheroes Hangout which is a small cafe that is run by victims of acid attacks. Here you can grab a coffee and listen to the women's stories.

Some great restaurants in Agra include the fine dining Esphahan, the more relaxed Mama Chicken, and the delicious Pinch of Spice.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

How to Plan a Taj Mahal Tour

Often referred to as being the most beautiful building in the world, the Taj stands out among Agra’s haze like a beautiful mirage.

  • 3.92K views
  • ~ mins read

Taking a Taj Mahal tour is the highlight of any India itinerary. Often referred to as being the most beautiful building in the world, the Taj stands out among Agra’s haze like a beautiful mirage. The ornately carved archways, the stunning white marble pillars, and the lush green gardens on the banks of the Yamuna river are guaranteed to take the breath away from even the most hard-to-please travelers.

The Taj is India’s most famous monument and was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved third wife, Mumtaz Mahal who passed away during childbirth. It is not a temple or a palace, but a mausoleum. The Taj took years, and the assistance of 20,000 workers to build. Sadly, following its completion, the Shah was overthrown by his son, who sentenced him to living out the rest of his life in jail while gazing at his beloved creation out of his cell window in Agra. After passing away, the Shah was buried alongside Mumtaz in the Taj. Today, millions of people visit the Taj every year.

Taj Mahal Quick Facts

Which gate to use.

Visiting one of the seven wonders of the world is simple right? You just stroll through the main gates, get in line and wait to enter? Not so fast! There are actually three gateways situated around the Taj Complex that offer entryway to the site. Though the prices are the same, not all gates are created equal and there are a few things to consider before you go.

Eastern Gate in Taj Mahal

  • The Western Gate

The western gate is the main entrance to the Taj Mahal facing out to Agra city. It may seem as though this gate is the most convenient in terms of accessibility, however it is also the most popular and queues here are typically much longer than at the eastern or southern gates. Try to arrive at the Taj early in the morning, or ready for sunset if using this gate. Locals predominantly use this gate.

  • The Eastern Gate

On most days, the eastern gate is a good entry point to use for the Taj Mahal as it is generally much less busy compared to the western and southern gates. This gate faces out towards Fatehabad and is a convenient entry point for tourists as it is the gate closest to many of Agra’s main hotels.

  • The Southern Gate

The southern entrance is the least used gate for accessing the Taj Mahal. It is surrounded by a busy market where you are likely to get pestered by toots, however it is arguably the best option for independent travelers or those staying in the nearby low-cost hotels. The only unfortunate thing about this gate is that it does not open until 8am so if you are hoping to be at the Taj for tourist-free photos as soon as it opens, this is not the gate to choose.

Taj Mahal in India

Purchasing Tickets

Tickets to the Taj Mahal can be purchased both online via the Archaeological Survey of India website, or from the various ticket offices that are situated close to each of the entry gates. It is not necessary to buy tickets in advance unless you are opting to participate in a night tour, that takes place 2 days before and a day after each full moon. However, buying the tickets the day before your intended arrival at the Taj helps you save time lining up on the day.

6 Main Attractions

At first glance, the Taj Mahal may simply appear as though it is just one building. However, upon arrival at the majestic whitewashed site, travelers will note that there are several notable attractions that make up the Taj complex.

The main attractions of the Taj Mahal are the stunning and expansive gardens that encapsulate the mausoleum, the Lady Diana chair, and the interiors of the Taj complex itself. There is also an informative museum located on the complex, and a few additional buildings that are worth exploring (the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather, the mosque, and the assembly hall).

1. The Ornate Gateway to the Taj

Taj Mahal's Royal Gate in India

It may seem obscure to list a gateway as one of the Taj Mahal’s major attractions, however the Taj’s main entryway “The Royal Gate”, also called Darwaza-e-rauza is so picturesque and ornately decorated that it is an architectural masterpiece, and a perfect place for travel photography in itself. Tourists entering from the eastern, western, and southern gate reach this epic gateway from where the first glimpse of the Taj Mahal is possible. The main gateway exists in the form of an octagonal hall with elaborate gates on either side.

2. The Mehtab Bagh Gardens

Mehtab Bagh in India

Commonly referred to as the “moonlight gardens”, the Mehtab Bagh gardens are stunning and expansive lawns and gardens filled with pastel colored flowers, fragrant rose bushes and lush greenery. Located across the river from the Taj Mahal, the particular draw of the gardens is the incredible view of the Taj and photo opportunity that they offer, particularly as the sun begins to set.

3. The Gardens of the Taj Mahal & The Lady Diana Chair

Taj Mahal

Upon arrival, make a beeline for the Lady Diana chair — the classic spot where Princess Diana sat during her visit to India in 1992 and the perfect place for a photo opportunity. As the day progresses, lines to sit here become incredibly long so you may want to boycott this if arriving later in the day. Enjoy exploring the expansive fragrant gardens that encompass the Taj and taking photos amid their perfect symmetry.

4. The Mausoleum Upon venturing inside the Taj, it feels as though the chaos of Agra has suddenly been replaced with the peace and serenity of the monument. The interiors of the mausoleum are exquisite, with elaborate tapestries, rich decorations and marble cenotaphs dedicated to Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. You will have to line up once more to enter the mausoleum, which is another reason why you should arrive as early as possible. The memorials that you see are actually decorative ones. The real crypts are situated below the surface and away from the tourists.

5. The Museum There is a mosque, an assembly hall, and a museum situated close to the mausoleum entrance. The museum is an interesting place to visit and provides a fascinating insight into the history of the Taj, as well as displaying the original construction plans for its creation.

6. The Baby Taj

Baby Taj in India

Across the river from the Taj, encapsulated by the beautiful Mehtab Bagh gardens, the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather, Mirza Ghiyas Beg also known as I’timad-ud-Daulah awaits. Often referred to as being the “baby Taj Mahal”, it is thought to have been regarded as a draft for the full-size Taj. With whitewashed walls there are some similarities between the Taj Mahal and the Baby Taj, however with its elegant marble lattice screens and jewel box structure, the Baby Taj possesses a unique look.

Plan the Visit

A Taj Mahal tour is an amazing experience. And although you might want to visit it time and again and maybe you will, it is important to ensure that you make the most of your visit at the moment.

  • Arrive Early

The Taj opens at 6:00 and you should get there early if you want to avoid the crowds. Whether you need to make it to the Taj for the very first thing in the morning depends on whether you are set on capturing some great photos without tourist hordes in the back of them, or you don’t mind the hustle and bustle. You will often find that people are queueing to enter the Taj as much as 30 minutes before it even opens. After 10:00, hundreds of tour buses pull up to the site making waiting in line and getting around a little stressful.

  • Know the Rules

As is likely to be expected for visiting a place of burial, there are some rules to adhere to when visiting the Taj Mahal. The rules and restricted items at the Taj have been listed below in the next segment. One of them to really remember is that photography is strictly prohibited inside the mausoleum so it’s better to take all the photos you wish to take now. Not to mention, once you come out again, it’s likely there will be more tourists!

  • Capture the Best Shots!

For incredible pictures of the sunset over the Taj Mahal, cross the river towards the “Baby Taj”. Explore the tomb and the restored Mehtab Bagh gardens, and watch the sun disappear behind the clouds and the majestic backdrop of the Taj Mahal.

Rules for Visiting the Taj Mahal

  • No photography inside the mausoleum.
  • Ensure that you are not carrying any prohibited items (list detailed below). Security at the Taj is strict.
  • Dress modestly. This is not enforced, but it is nice to be respectful.
  • No eating on-site.
  • You must be quiet inside the mausoleum.
  • Visitors must wear shoe covers to protect the site.

Items Prohibited at the Taj Mahal

Security at the Taj is strict, and you will be checked prior to entry to ensure that you are not carrying any prohibited items. You should store your items at the nearby lockers. Prohibited items refer to:

  • Anything edible
  • Smoking paraphernalia and tobacco
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Any electrical items (besides cameras and mobile phones)
  • Arms, ammunition and anything that could be used as a weapon

How to Get to the Taj Mahal

You can get to the Taj Mahal via bus, train, or by hiring a private driver. Public transportation in India is often overcrowded, prone to rescheduling, and unorganized. Be sure to arrive at the stations early and pack some reading material and snacks in case of a delay.

You can reach the Taj Mahal by train from New Delhi or Varanasi. From New Delhi, trains for Agra depart almost hourly. From Varanasi, the train services are less frequent, with only one train leaving per day. It is important to note that there are actually two train stations in Agra — Agra Cantt and Agra Fort stations. For the Taj Mahal, the most convenient station to disembark at is the Agra Fort station.

Various transportation providers offer frequent bus services to Agra from numerous different starting points around India (including Delhi and Varanasi).

You can also fly in from different cities in India to Agra. Either ways, you will need to hire local transportation like bus, tempo, rickshaw, or taxi to get to the vicinity of Taj Mahal. You will also find prepaid taxis and autorickshaws at the rail station which is a more reliable but perhaps a bit costly option. Since diesel and petrol vehicles are not allowed inside 500 meter radius of the Taj, you might have to change to eco-friendly vehicles such as cycle rickshaw, horse-driven tongas, etc to reach the entry points.

  • Taj Mahal Tour Packages

Since getting to and around the Taj Mahal can be hectic, you could consider booking a place of one of the many Taj Mahal tour packages that operate to and from the site each day. This takes some of the stress out of organizing your Taj Mahal visit. It is advisable to organize this with a reputable provider in advance, since there are many touts posing as tour guides at the site. Taj Mahal holiday services are sold by many companies in Delhi and Agra.

Good to know

  • In order to avoid confusion and save time and money, tell your driver exactly which gate you want to enter from.
  • A Taj Mahal ticket entitles travelers to a small discount for entering other notable sites in Agra — including the Agra Fort, Sikandra, Itmad-ud Daulah , and Fatehpur Sikri.
  • For an altogether more unique and perhaps romantic experience, it is possible to visit the Taj Mahal at night from 20:30 to 24:30. This is a particularly beautiful spectacle but is hosted only 2 days before and a day after a full moon. It should be noted that when opting to view the Taj at night, tickets should be purchased in advance since it is not open to everyone like during general admission times.
  • Taj Mahal night tickets must be purchased from the Archeological Survey of India office at least one day before the event and cost USD 10.50*. This must be paid in local currency.
  • There are three different gates to enter the Taj Mahal though the price is the same at each.
  • When lining up to enter the Taj, the queues are segregated by gender — one for men, and one for women. If you are travelling as a couple or a mixed party, you should organize a place to meet inside.
  • Be aware of pickpockets. It gets incredibly crowded in the mausoleum with lots of pushing and shoving. As such, you should ensure that you keep your valuables safe.
  • Lockers are available outside the entrance which are a good option considering the Taj’s strict security policies.
  • Prepare to be hassled both by toots and people wanting to take photos with you. Don’t be afraid to say no.
  • If you decide to hire a professional photographer or a guide for a Taj Mahal tour once you arrive at the site, you should ask to check their photo ID to ensure that they are a licensed provider and not a local posing as a guide.
  • It can get very hot during day, so wear breathable attire.

Given the fact that the Taj Mahal is India’s biggest tourist attraction, it makes sense that it can get incredibly crowded. Though it can be overwhelming, you can offset some of the chaos by arriving early. Go in with an open mind and a positive attitude and remember that even though the vendors trying to sell you trinkets are annoying, you are standing beneath one of the seven wonders of the world!

Visiting the Taj Mahal: Everything you need to know

Taj Mahal travel India

Is there a sight more iconic, more beautiful, more jaw-droppingly spectacular than the Taj Mahal?

Quite honestly, we can’t think of one.

At the very least, there’s no mausoleum more grand, no declaration of love more apparent than building a marble masterpiece for one’s favorite wife… And no better reason to travel than seeing its magnificence up close.

After all, this is art. Built in Agra, India between 1631 and 1648, it’s also history. And, of course, it’s the perfect opportunity to take some otherworldly photos. So, to help visitors prepare for their Taj Mahal travels, we’ve prepared a little guide, enlisting the help of some Intrepid experts – from Destination Managers to acclaimed trip leaders – to cover all the bases.

Coming up: what to bring, where to take the best snaps, what else to see in Agra (and beyond), and so much more…

Before you arrive at the Taj Mahal

That old saying ‘patience is a virtue’ really comes into its own when discussing the Taj Mahal.

Be prepared to be surrounded by hundreds (if not thousands) of people. These include Indian men, women and children who may ask to take photos with you.

To prepare with the help of other travelers and a local tour guide, consider taking a group tour. Intrepid have Taj-visiting trips that range from 8-day Golden Triangle tours (now with solo-only departures !) to 15-day trips dedicated to food , to 19-day trips combining the highlights of India and Nepal .

If you’re more pressed for time, you can check out the Taj Mahal on a whirlwind day tour from Delhi. Check out Urban Adventures to see the itinerary that we’d recommend for this. And while you’re at it, check out their day trips in Delhi , Jaipur , Varanasi and Mumbai !

Travel to the Taj Mahal, India

What to bring to the Taj Mahal

Always leave your valuables in the hotel. There are lockers available at the Taj but it’s best to have minimal belongings on you so you don’t spend too much time checking in.

You really only need to bring the following in one small bag:

What to wear to the Taj Mahal

There is no dress code but you should still be respectful. If you want to enter the mosque, you will need to cover your head, shoulders and knees.

It gets hot in Agra and there is very little shade, so wear light clothing and make sure you wear sunscreen. Then again, Agra also gets very cold in winter (Nov-Feb) so layers are your friend too.

If you visit with Intrepid, you’ll be taken there earlier in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid the worst of the heat.

The weather can be hot at the Taj Mahal in India

Having been to the Taj a few times, I’ve learnt the importance of wearing shoes that are easy to remove. You need to take your shoes off when you go inside and the easier they are to slip on and off the better. This actually applies to much of India – shoes with loads of laces are hard!

Other things you need to know

No food is allowed inside.

Cigarettes and lighters are also not allowed.

Tripods and additional lighting equipment need prior permission to be brought with. Photography inside the mausoleum is prohibited. Most electronics (except cameras and small video cameras) are not allowed.

Be wary of touts, thieves and rude shop keepers. It’s a busy, high-pressure area, but keep your wits about you and you won’t need to worry!

When you’re at the Taj Mahal

Go early, wait for space to explore and photograph, and get yourself away from the crowds (if possible).

The Taj Mahal on a bright sunny day in India

And simply focus on taking in all the magic. Even Intrepid leaders who see the Taj Mahal monthly (or more!) remain in awe of it. Sana Jinah , one of the company’s inspiring female tour guides, has some tips on how to do this:

The Taj Mahal is a place for exploring quietly on your own or with loved ones. So, once I’m done briefing my groups I give them a good 2-3 hours inside the Taj. There are ways I try to make the experience special and memorable for travelers, but if I say what they are then they will no longer be surprises! The Taj has such a charm. Every time I see it it looks different (due to the direction of the sunlight). It’s so beautiful…

She also recommends those looking for optimum conditions try visiting the Taj Mahal at sunrise on a clear day.

Tips for taking photos at the Taj Mahal

Everyone wants that iconic shot of themselves at the Taj Mahal. You know the one – where you sit on the bench and the grandeur of the marble mausoleum forms the backdrop.

Taking an iconic photo at the Taj Mahal, India

Below are some photography suggestions from Intrepid’s General Manager in India, Pravin Tamang . (His photography is amazing –  check it out !)

  • Shot from the arch of the main doorway
  • Capture the reflection of the fountains that line the route towards the Taj Mahal’s main platform
  • Shot of Taj Mahal from the riverside with the reflection on the river
  • Shot from the other side of the river, ‘Mehtab Bagh’, where you get a glimpse of Taj
  • The Taj Mahal can also be shot from some parts of the Red Fort

You can also get great photos from the many rooftops of restaurants close to the Taj Mahal. Unfortunately, Agra does get pretty smoggy, so winter can often have poor visibility earlier in the day and around sunset. That said, this can make shots look very atmospheric!

What to do after visiting the Taj Mahal

First, go back to your hotel room, take a shower, and revel in the relative peace and quiet. Then explore these cool destinations both in and out of Agra:

What to do in Agra

The Taj Mahal is, quite clearly, the star of the show in this northern Indian city. But the Agra Fort is also stunning, especially if you didn’t get a chance to go to the Red Fort in Delhi. A 16th-century Mughal monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s a sight not to be missed.

Despite being located on the  Golden Triangle  tourist circuit, there’s less to do in Agra than in many other Indian cities. It’s pretty polluted from the heavy industry (more on that later) and you likely won’t spend too long there, whatever the trip.

One way that Intrepid tries to show visitors a different perspective on the country is by (sometimes) taking travelers to  Sheroes Hangout . Just blocks from the Taj Mahal, it’s a small cafe run entirely by female acid attack survivors. Here, victims of attacks are employed and tell their stories. It can be confronting, but also inspiring and memorable in equal measures.

Where to go outside of Agra

There are various great destinations only a few hours drive (well, 4-7) from the Taj Mahal. Of these, Orchha, Jaipur and Pushkar are all tourist-friendly, peaceful and beautiful places.

Orchha is a town that travelers often overlook. This is a shame, because it’s historic, laid-back and has a bunch of beautiful temples. It’s not always on tour itineraries, but you CAN visit it on  this 15-day trip  from Delhi to Kathmandu (cooking demo and palace visit included!).

Visit the stunning Chaturbhuj Temple in Orchha

Chaturbhuj Temple in Orchha

Jaipur is much more well-known. Also known as the ‘Pink City’ , the capital of Rajasthan is full of chaos, charm and unique architecture. Visit the hilltop Amber Fort, haggle in the enchanting bazaars, and consider taking a hot air balloon over the city to take it all in.

Pushkar is another underrated town. One of the oldest and most serene towns in India, it’s home to Pushkar Lake, a sacred spot for Hindus that’s utterly dazzling at sundown. Because of its holy nature, the vegetarian food here is simply unmissable. Visit on this 15-day trip all around Rajasthan.

A final note about the Taj Mahal’s mud therapy

As you may have read or heard, the Taj Mahal has recently been undergoing a very thorough clean. Yep, to be precise, a mud mask as of April 2018.

Why? Air pollution from factories in Agra had been slowly turning the Taj Mahal’s ivory-white surfaces yellow – and this was one way of restoring them to their former glory. The work – applying a clay traditionally used to clean marble to the entire structure of the Taj – was carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India. And this work was part of a series of restorative projects carried out on the historic site.

13 Things To Know Before Visiting The Taj Mahal

W hen it comes to truly great monuments, it doesn't get much more iconic than the ivory-white marble, and satisfying symmetry, of the Taj Mahal. Perched on the banks of the river Yamuna in Agra, India, countless tourists flock to its gates each year, for an all-important glimpse of what is often heralded as the most beautiful building in the world. Some 20,000 of the most skilled craftsmen from India and Central Asia worked on this ornate masterpiece, featuring thousands of sparkling semi-precious stones, among other delicate materials.

You've probably spotted it in pictures any number of times, but experiencing the allure of the Taj Mahal in person is nothing short of otherworldly. It's a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site , which it became in 1983, and was even declared the winner of the New7Wonders of the World initiative in 2007. But before you visit in the flesh, it's a good idea to get familiar with everything there is to know about the famous "monument of love". From how much tickets cost and where to snap the best picture, to the ideal time of day to arrive, here's how to make the most of your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

It's Pretty Convenient To Visit

Standing tall and proud in the bustling city of Agra, the Taj Mahal is about four hours north of the country's capital, Delhi. Agra is the most populated state in India, which means there are multiple different options for getting here. The fastest route to the Taj Mahal would be to fly. If you're already in India, your best bet is to arrive at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport, in Agra — just over 4 miles from the city center. But if you're coming from outside of the country, the nearest major airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

From here, Agra is easy enough to reach by train. You'll want to arrive at Agra Cantt Railway Station, with several superfast, express trains running to and from all the major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi. If you'd prefer to take the bus, Agra also has a well-developed road network, which you can access from various nearby hubs, including Delhi, Jaipur, and Varanasi. Just make sure you come into the Idgah Bus Stand in Agra — the main bus terminal.

Whichever transport method you choose, you'll need to take a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to reach the Taj Mahal from Agra's center. Be sure to haggle with the driver to avoid paying hefty tourist prices, especially since they won't be able to drop you right outside the Taj Mahal. Vehicles aren't allowed within 500 meters (1640 feet) of the monument because of pollution concerns.

You Can't Visit On Fridays

From sunrise to sunset, on almost every day of the week, you're free to soak up the Taj Mahal in all its splendor — except on Fridays, when it's closed to allow practicing Muslims to worship. You might want to pass up on a weekend visit, too, just to avoid the huge swathes of crowds at every turn.

Settle on an early-morning strategy , or go for a "last thing at night" visit — the Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. Sunrise is truly magical, thanks to a warm glow descending over its pristine white marble. And with fewer people around, you'll likely have the space and time to fully appreciate all of the monument's intricacies, without distraction. Before sunset is just as rewarding, as the changing colors of the sky create an exquisite backdrop.

There isn't exactly a best time to visit India — each season comes with its pros and cons — but think about your priorities. If you prefer cooler temperatures, visit in the winter, between October and March. Just remember that you'll have to contend with thousands of other tourists with the same idea. Plus, it can get foggy, which may obscure your view. April to May will be hot and humid, but there will be fewer tourists around. That leaves June to September — monsoon season. You may get caught in a downpour, but even fewer visitors are prepared to brave it during this time, and accommodation prices are much cheaper.

It Took Around 20 Years To Build

Visiting a historic monument is never quite the same if you don't know the full story, so don't plan this trip of a lifetime without doing your homework first. You'll find that understanding the history gives you a much deeper respect for the Taj Mahal, and allows you to really take in all that this immense structure has to offer.

To give you a little background, the iconic monument we all know and love was commissioned by the fifth Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, as a memorial for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal -- she died during childbirth in 1631. The building process was started almost immediately after her tragic death and took around 20 years to complete. As well as incredible white marble from the Indian state of Rajasthan, materials for the Taj Mahal were sought from all over the world, including turquoise from Tibet, white sapphire from Sri Lanka, and jade imported from China. Around 1,000 elephants were also thought to be involved in the construction process, transporting these special materials across borders, and helping to lay them in place.

When the Taj Mahal was finally finished in 1653, there were rumors that the thousands of laborers who helped create it had their thumbs chopped off, so that no such monument could ever be built again! Whether this holds true or not, the Emperor was also buried here after he died in 1666, alongside his beloved wife.

You Need To Wear Shoe Covers

A visit to the Taj Mahal can feel a little overwhelming and be a lot to take in. So much so that it may be easy to forget it's also a mausoleum — the final resting place of the Emperor and his true love. It's really important to be respectful of the rules around the monument, including covering your shoes when you go into the burial chamber.

While most temples in India require you to take off your shoes completely, the Taj Mahal simply asks tourists to use shoe covers, which are given to you in a fetching light blue shade, at the ticket booth when you arrive. These are used to prevent dust particles from being tracked into the mausoleum and to keep its marble-clad surfaces as shiny and clean as possible. On your way out of the Taj Mahal, be sure to put these disposable shoe covers, and any rubbish that you have, in the trash cans provided. Sadly, the world-famous monument has suffered from plagues of litter in recent years.

Tickets Cost More For International Tourists

Don't be surprised to see that domestic tourists pay much less for the privilege of gawking at the Taj Mahal. Indian citizens are charged 50 rupees (approximately $0.70), while foreign visitors must pay 1,100 rupees ($15.50). You'll need to part with even more money if you want to go inside the mausoleum itself — there's an additional 200 rupee fee ($2.50), but it's worth it. Plus, the foreign tourists' ticket comes with shoe covers, a water bottle, a map, as well as a bus or golf cart service, which takes you to the nearest gate. A real lifesaver in Agra's blistering heat. Bear in mind that your ticket is valid for one visit only, but gives you three blissful hours to explore the Taj Mahal.

If you plan to buy your ticket on-site, there are separate counters for domestic and foreign tourists, so be sure to line up accordingly. Both of these booths are likely to be busy with long, snaking queues, which is why it's sensible to arrive as early in the day as you can. In fact, your best bet is to line up at the South Gate and avoid the very busy East Gate at all costs. Or, simply buy your tickets online beforehand.

You Should Know And Respect The Rules

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, every visitor must follow certain rules and regulations inside the Taj Mahal, which have been put in place to protect its magnificence. For example, at no point should you touch the marble, or any other material inside the complex, because it could lead to erosion. As it is, each surface needs special, round-the-clock care to ensure its beauty is preserved for future generations.

Littering and smoking are also not allowed within the Taj Mahal, so make sure you do your bit to dispose of empty water bottles, and other trash, in the bins outside. If your entrance ticket allows you into the mausoleum, remember not to take any photos here and to be as quiet and respectful as you can. This houses the tomb of Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife -- for whom thousands of Muslims make the journey each year to pay their respects.

Dress Appropriately

You won't find an enforced dress code for the Taj Mahal, but it's always important to be a respectful tourist when visiting India . So, treat the monument like you would any other temple or mosque on your travels. This means keeping your shoulders and everything above your knees covered, as a sign of respect. Sure, you'll notice some foreigners wearing shorts and tank tops, but don't be swept up in this. It's often seen as disrespectful and will only invite unwanted stares.

The best thing to do is play it safe with longer, flowing trousers to keep you covered and cool, as well as kaftans or shawls to hide your shoulders. For guys, wear an overshirt on your top half and a pair of shorts that ideally go down to your knees, or play it safe with full-length pants. If you're feeling exotic, it's possible to rent traditional Indian clothes for your visit, such as a saree or a kurta pajamabut, but expect to pay extra for the privilege.

Leave These Things At Home

A dress code might not be enforced, per se, but the Taj Mahal has some pretty strict rules about what can be brought into the monument. To save yourself the hassle, avoid carrying a backpack (or anything larger than a small bag), any type of food or drink (even if it's sealed), tobacco products, drones, books, mobile phone chargers, GoPros, headphones, batteries, and tripods. And don't bother trying to sneak any one of these items in, either. The guards at security points really dig through your bag and follow a pretty elaborate frisk procedure for each person.

If you really must have one of these items on you for the day, there are lockers available at the East and West Gates that you can store them in. Having said that, it's much easier just to leave forbidden items at home, so be selective when packing your bag. Bring only your camera and your phone with you, but keep the latter on silent mode in the mausoleum.

Get A Guide

For some of the world's most iconic monuments, it could be seen as a waste of money to hire a tour guide. But not the Taj Mahal. Having an expert at your fingertips will really bring the structure to life for you, with stories, and interesting facts you might not hear otherwise. Not to mention be your own personal photographer, and of course, help you with all the best angles for these pictures. There really isn't much information within the complex itself, so it's a bit of a no-brainer. But where do you find the best guide, and how much should it cost?

If you're staying in a hotel nearby, reception staff usually have good contacts with extremely knowledgeable locals. In most cases, they'll be able to offer you a good deal. Or, you could book directly on a local tour guide website, ensuring your hard-earned money goes to a good home. Expect to pay around 2,000 rupees ($25) for a tour guide per day, but if you just want someone to show you around the monument for three hours, you're looking at somewhere near the 1,500 rupee mark ($18). These prices increase dramatically for the pushy kind of guide who lingers outside the Taj Mahal waiting for tourists. So, it goes without saying — book in advance for less stress on the day itself. If you do decide to go with a guide when you arrive, ask them for an approved identity card before you begin.

Where To Take The Best Pictures

The signature shot of the Taj Mahal (the one doing the rounds on social media) is on the approach from the South Gate. You know the one — with a reflection of its world-famous domes in the turquoise fountain, and the majestic white marble of the mausoleum providing the most perfect of backdrops. But it's nearly impossible to get a clear photo here, without other tourists straying into view. So, take your chance and snap away as soon as you arrive — it'll only get busier later on.

If you can't quite get that quintessential shot at this stage, don't be disheartened. There are plenty of other opportunities. What's more, the Taj Mahal is perfectly symmetrical, providing nearly identical views from multiple vantage points. With this in mind, explore the complex as you go and get creative, looking for new angles. One of the most underrated of these is from the mosque on the west side of the mausoleum. It provides the real money shot, and with far fewer people to contend with, too. Who could say no to red-sandstone scalloped archways, providing the most perfect frame for the undisputed star of the show — the mausoleum? Time it for the break of day at sunrise or just before nightfall at sunset, and you're onto a real winner.

Visit The Other Sites, Too

Sure, the main draw of the Taj Mahal is the ivory-white marble of its mausoleum, but there's an entire complex to explore aside from this, so don't miss out. Start with Chowk-i-Jilo Khana forecourt, which houses the main entrance. It's a stunningly beautiful, arched gateway, topped with delicate domes and adorned with floral designs. Next, make your way to the Charbagh, which means four gardens. Prepare yourself for breathtaking views as you walk through Chowk-i-Jilo Khana gateway and into this tranquil space, split into four quadrants by waterways. These gardens are reminiscent of the Koranic description of Paradise — rivers flowing with water, milk, wine, and honey — and a classic sign of the Mughal era.

As you keep moving, you'll come across the aforementioned red-sandstone mosque on the west side, and a perfect replica of it on the east side. This completes the architectural symmetry of the complex and provides a few alternative vantage points for photos. Lastly, if you have time, take in the museum, which is open between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. It's brimming with exquisite miniature paintings, two marble pillars believed to have come from nearby Agra Fort, and portraits of Mughal rulers. This includes those of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, lying in the mausoleum just a few steps away.

Expect Photo Requests

If you've explored other parts of India, you'll be well-equipped to deal with it by now. But if the Taj Mahal is your first stop in this truly magnificent country, prepare for a multitude of photo requests. This is especially true if you're tall, have pale skin, and fair hair — characteristics that tend to draw a lot of attention. From whole family photos to couples pictures, locals and Indian tourists will likely be very excited to see you in their country, and may even queue up for their chance to take a snap with you.

Unsurprisingly, this can become quite tiring, not to mention take you away from the experience at hand. But 9 times out of 10, these requests come with no malice, so don't be afraid. In fact, it's seen as a gesture of friendship. If this sounds a little strange to you, it may help to understand that many Indians don't have much exposure to fair-skinned foreigners, or may never have traveled outside India before. Having said this, it's perfectly fine to politely refuse, if you're not comfortable. Otherwise, get stuck in and enjoy meeting plenty of friendly and enthusiastic locals.

Where To Stay In Agra

It's common for tourists to visit Agra on a day trip from Delhi. But just because it's possible, doesn't mean it's the best use of time. For one thing, it makes visiting the Taj Mahal for sunrise or sunset a tall order — and you don't want to miss that. So, if time allows, try to stay at least one night in Agra to make the most of this very special monument. From budget guesthouses to royal suites with unbeatable views of the Taj, it may be comforting to know that Agra has no shortage of places to lay your head with options to suit every budget.

Taj Ganj is one of the best spots in the city, perched right next to the Taj Mahal itself. In fact, it's the closest area that you can stay to the structure, offering a range of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels. It's also a popular spot for restaurants, with a rich dining hub serving North Indian and Mughlai cuisine. The area is also dotted with craft shops selling carved Taj Mahal replicas, marble inlay work, and semi-precious stones. If you're looking for something fancier, journey just a short distance away to Fatehabad Road. This area is renowned for its upscale hotels and plush, luxury resorts, many of which offer breathtaking views of the monument from deluxe suite rooms and rooftop restaurant terraces.
