Tonight Alive is a female fronted Australian five-piece pop punk band from Sydney, formed in 2008. Over the last six-years, they have gained a global reputation as one of the most successful pop punk bands of today.

Guitarist Jake Hardy and bassist Cameron Adler already had project together when they recruited then sixteen-year-old Jenna McDougall to form the first version of Tonight Alive. They later added Whakaio Taahi on lead guitar and Matt Best on drums. They spent their first year playing local shows at youth centres around the Sydney area. In 2009, the band decided to record their debut self-funded EP “All Shapes and Disguises” with producers Greg Stace and Dave Petrovic. It was released in June 2010, with their music video and debut single “Wasting Away” being released all in the same month. “Closer” was featured on season six of the US reality TV show The Hills.

It was in 2010 that a demo made it to the desk of producer Mark Trombino, who contacted the band, and proposed to produce their debut full-length album. The band recorded their first album in Los Angeles at NRG Studios over two months. It would be entitled “What Are You So Scared Of?” released on October 14th 2011, in Australia, Valentines Day 2012 in US and September 28th 2012 in the US. It made it to number 15 in Australian album chart, and number 7 in the US Heatseekers chart.

The first single “Starlight”: was released July 1st 2011, the second single “Let It Land” was released on September 19th 2011. They even featured on “Punk Goes Pop 4” compilation CD covering Mumford & Sons hit single “Little Lion Man”. The band has been on numerous tours since, such as the Fearless Friends Tour alongside blessthefall, The Word Alive, Motionless In White and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk.

The band’s sophomore album “The Other Side” was released on September 6th 2013, through Sony and Fearless Records. The first single “The Ocean” premièred on Radio 1 in the UK on July 11th 2013 to coincide with the announcement of the album. In promotion of this album, they embarked on a tour with All Time Low on their A Love like War: UK Tour and a tour with Taking Back Sunday and The Used on their co-headlining North American tour in March 2014.

They contributed their song “The Edge” for Sony and Marvel’s film The Amazing Spider-Man 2and it was featured on the deluxe edition of the soundtrack in Australia, New Zealand, UK and Ireland.

Live reviews

When I first heard Tonight Alive was playing at O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London, I didn't doubt for a second. I'm an Argentinian fan who was by chance in holidays at this fascinating city, and the band has never been to my country (by the way, TA, you should come down here on tour!). So, again, when I found out they were playing, I took my only chance to see them live right away.

They did not disappoint. They were far from disappointing. The show started with a single from their new and genre-polemic album "Limitless", called "To Be Free". That was the powerful start of a powerful night. The show went on with majority of songs taken from the so acclaimed record "The Other Side", giving the night a speeded-up and powerful rythm, through both sound and lights. However, the band eventually managed to take it slow just to delight us with a couple of accoustic adapted songs, sitting down at the edge of the stage to create some sort of intimate atmosphere with the fans, inside the small and cozy O2 Forum.

The gig went on and the four singles from the new album were eventually played, but perfectly and seamlessly integrated with the ones from the previous records. The band was skillful enough to accomplish this, to the point that when "How Does It Feel" was played, it felt like it was a Tonight Alive well known classic.

"I always have a word". That is the lesson we all took home from that magic night at Kentish Town. At a specific moment, during the show, the singer Jenna took her time to pause the music for a bit and give a little speech. The main message she preached about was that we, people, always have a word in what happens in our lives. We shouldn't let other people, or even life itself, decide over our own matters. It's time we take command of our lives, do what we want to do, like what we want to like, seek what whe wish, and be who we want to be. "I always have a word. I always have a word. I always have a word." We said repeatedly, merging into a single yell, just before Tonight Alive brought their music back. This was, to me, something unique and special, but not surprising, as Jenna had recently said, in an interview, that what she wanted for fans to take from their shows is something that changes them in a certain way. The last thing she wants for fans is to go back, after the gig, and carry on with their lives just the same way, as if nothing had happened.

Suddenly, when the flow of the night felt just natural, Jenna made us all know we were approaching the end of it. (Time flies!). The band said goodbye again, full of energy, at the top of their (and our) excitement.

The sound itself was perfect. The battery, so energetic, felt as if it was been played from inside of me, and Jenna's vocals were flawless, yet full of power and emotion.

I would definetely go to see them again if I could, and anxiously look forward to a show somewhen soon in Argentina.

Tonight Alive isn't just a group of friends playing some instruments. They are some very commited and passionate people who love what they do and practice what they preach. There has been much controversy about their new sound, but I think it's just part of who they are. If we really understand the lyrics to all the songs we're used to hear from them (and always have loved!) then we also should be able to understand that this new record isn't but Tonight Alive being Tonight Alive. Not following the rules, not paying attention to the standards, not giving a damn about other people's opinion, not copying themselves, embarked in a Limitless journey, just DOING WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. That is coherence. I respect that, as well as I appreciate it.

Thank you and keep rocking!

My voice is probably not the most appreciated among the Tonight Alive fans. I only recently discovered them, about 6 months ago in March, to be exact, when I saw them as the opening act for All Time Low at the O2 Academy Brixton. Since then I have immersed myself fully in their music, thus leading me to attend their concert at The Liquid Room, Edinburgh. The venue itself is tiny, a capacity of less than 1,000 and Tonight Alive didn't sell out, there were about 300-400 of us. This allowed for an incredibly intimate show (especially for me as I was pretty much front row for its entirety), yet still bursting with an awesome energy. The setlist was perfectly varied - featuring songs from across their two albums and always encouraging the crowd to dance along with them. What stood out the most (to me, at least) was when Jenna McDougall took to the stage on her own, armed with nothing but a microphone and an acoustic guitar and performed Amelia to an entirely enthralled crowd, many of whom were moved to tears. She touchingly said that this was something she doesn't normally do - in fact, acoustic tracks are generally never performed at Tonight Alive gigs, and Jenna has said she's not very confident on the guitar, though she needn't have worried - it was a magical moment. An incredible show and I cannot wait to see them again. (For the record - the best concert I've been to, an absolute favourite.)

My first experience of Aussie band Tonight Alive was at The Barfly in 2012 on their debut European headline tour. From the moment they hit the stage their energy and passion was infectious.

With two successful studio albums there is no shortage of material for their live shows, including ‘What Are You So Scared Of?’ (2011) and ‘The Other Side’ (2013). They also often include songs from their 2010 EP ‘All Shapes & Disguises’ such as ‘Wasting Away’, which front-woman Jenna McDougall dedicates to “all the die-hard Tonight Alive fans”. Tonight Alive bring their own rock-edge to pop-punk, write songs from the heart and give 110% for every show, gaining them a loyal fan-base in the UK and worldwide.

What can you expect at Tonight Alive show? Plenty of energy, awesome stage presence, and a commanding performance right from the start. Songs like ‘The Fire’, ‘Breaking & Entering’ and ‘What Are You So Scared Of’ showcase the band’s energy and talent. Their video for ‘The Ocean’ best represents a Tonight Alive show; five friends living their dream and taking everyone along for the ride.

I knew the moment I walked into the tiny venue that the small crowd would only be filled with true fans who appreciate a talented band fronted by one of the best female rock vocalists you can find. I was not disappointed. As a fan of the band for quite some time, I find that seeing them in smaller venues really helps the sense of connection. This venue was so small that the band had to walk through the crowd to get on and off the stage. Being able to high-five the band as they took the stage was pretty freaking cool. More importantly, the close proximity really exposed the phenomenal vocals of Jenna McDougall. Not only was the performance high-energy, it felt polished and smooth from all their touring. One of best aspects of the performance was watching Jake just rock out and swing that fabulous mane of hair like a weapon slicing the air. Seeing Whakaio jump and bounce with wild abandon really got the crowd off their feet and engaged. While I have enjoyed listening to "The Other Side", being able to scream along with the crowd to each song forged a bond with the music that won't fade easily.

Wow just wow. Aside from the great live quality of the band, the vibe was what made this night so special. It doesn't matter how old you are, how you dress or who you love: Tonight Alive themselves and all their fans make you feel right at home. It feels like you're one big family. Like I said before, Tonight Alive make great music and when they perform it live, it's even better. Jenna's inspiring words about being yourself and believing in yourself made me feel warm inside. And about the songs themselves: Fierce and energetic poppunk that makes you wanna jump, sing and mosh. That is exactly what the band's all about. And it's also exactly what I did. Tonight Alive rocked me off my socks, made me tear up with their acoustic version of Amelia and made my body hurt in a good way. I highly recommend you to see this band live. It'll be an experience you'll never forget!

I've been a fan of Tonight Alive for about 5 years. It was their 10 year anniversary and this experience was absolutely amazing.I believe Tonight Alive have a one of the best connections with their fans. As well as the Tonight Alive community are very friendly to be around, every show you can easily make new friends. The two times I've been able to see them I've always never wanted to leave because Jenna, Jake, Cam and Matt (Band members) have such a cool and friendly vibe; it just makes me feel it's more than just a show. And I would love to thank them for that. Plus Tonight Alive just ROCK full stop

Tonight Alive was honestly one of the best gigs I've ever been to! The atmosphere was so great, not to mention the music and performance as a whole was awesome. If it wasn't enough, BOTH The Summer Set and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! supported them, which was on another level itself as all three bands are incredible! Everyone at the gig was so amazing, and what a great encore they had with Eject! Eject! Eject!, Breaking and Entering and The Other Side, and everyone seemed to truly enjoy themselves; I cannot wait for them to return on their next UK tour, it was amazing!:):):):):):):):):)

One of the best experiences of my life

I went to this event at the O2 Institute2 in Birmingham with my sister and we had the best night ever. First time seeing them perform acoustic and they (especially Jenna) was brilliant and it was an amazing show. Met all 4 of the band at the end and had a chat with them about things.

Favourite moment? Listening to their songs played acoustically and understanding the words in the songs.

Describe your experience at this gig overall? Amazing experience ever.

All I can say is Wow. A pure honest artist with an amazing presence on stage. Tonight Alive are true performers and extremely honest in how/why they deliver.

I can honestly say I have never had as many chills, goose bumps and "teary" moments at a Gig. If there is one band you ever see in your life - it must be Tonight Alive.

I can't recommend Tonight Alive enough - not only for their music, but their passion, honesty and the way they make you feel.

Thank You Tonight Alive.

I was very disappointed. Billed as an All Ages show, I brought my kids with me, youngest being 10. The singing was great, but the performer used so many F-bombs, and ended the show by flippong the bird with both hands at the audience that it detracted horribly from the professionalism a lot. I had to appologise to my kids. These people need to grow up. I will never subject my kids to a tonight alive show again. I think tonight alive needs to appologise to my kids. Boooooooo!!!!!

Why Tonight Alive walked away from the pop punk scene

Tonight Alive's Jenna McDougall and Whakaio Taahi on Limitless, spirituality and the future

Tonight Alive

Aussie quintet Tonight Alive took fans by surprise with the sharp change in musical direction on their latest record, Limitless . In place of the spiky pop punk that found them fame was contemplative, introspective pop rock, with big choruses and slick production.

Since releasing their latest album, the Sydney band have toured relentlessly, first on Warped Tour over the summer, then in Japan then into the UK and Europe. Next, they’ll be heading to South America later this month before finishing the year with a lengthy stint across North America.

For vocalist Jenna McDougall and guitarist Whakaio Taahi, Limitless isn’t just a change in their sound – it’s the musical manifestation of their desire to live their best lives. Here’s what they had to say about following your dreams and finding happiness.

You’re really passionate about being true to yourself and always make this clear on stage – have your speeches helped you grow your own confidence?

Jenna: “Touring takes a lot of energy, focus and preparation, and a lot of fucks to give. You’re here and it’s a privilege. Part of the reason I [make speeches] on stage is so I can hear it every day. To have a mantra every day that you repeat, especially on stage where I feel like I’m on my highest high and I get to be who I truly want to be… you can’t always feel safe to do that, so I feel like the stage is the best place for me to say it and for it to be received.”

As well as the message on Limitless , it’s also a big change in your sound. Were you worried about how it might be received?

Whakaio: “These songs on Limitless are starting to sink in for us. It’s really becoming a lifestyle now and we’re starting to live it every day. Jen’s really living that on stage and being her true self. We took a really big risk with Limitless because we’ve taken a step in a direction that we wanted to do, and it was the first time we didn’t censor ourselves. We’re willing to take the brunt of that and have people talk shit on us, but we want our fans to see they can do the same. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says, because all that is, is a reflection of them. If they say a negative thing to you, it’s because they feel that way. It’s their fear.”

What first attracted you to a more mindful, spiritual way of living?

Jenna: “I think the place [our spirituality] began was our friendships being built on this foundation of ‘what are you going to do about it?’ That was the first action-based lifestyle we embraced. When I was about 15, I’d call Whak and cry and be suffering emotionally, and he’d say, ‘OK, so how are you going to change the situation?’ It was such a foreign concept to me, and it’s still something I have to create tools to work with every day. I guess I was always attracted to a more spiritual lifestyle, but I think it was something that developed naturally from the age of about 21 or 22. [I was] kind of raising my awareness a little more – working on my health, becoming vegetarian and then vegan. It cleared the passages in my body to be more conscious and aware of my environments and relationships. It was in increments, and I want to keep growing every single day and every person I meet, I want to learn from them.”

Whakaio: “I think looking at yourself is one of the hardest things you ever have to do in your life, because you may not like what you see. But that’s OK, we’ve all got to work on it. Everyone you meet has something to teach you, we’ve just got to be open and aware. Happiness is a by-product of the thing that you’re living. If you’re living your true excitement you’re going to be happy, rather than pushing down those thoughts of what you want to be doing, because that’s how you become sick.”

tonight alive tour

What does the future hold for Tonight Alive?

Jenna: “We’re really enjoying the touring cycle right now and I feel like we’re living the philosophy we wrote about that we weren’t yet embodying. Every day I feel like I’m closer to living my purpose, if not already doing that. And that’s a feeling that started at the beginning of 2015 when we were doing Soundwave, and I was like, ‘Oh, I’m actually practicing what I’m preaching for the first time’. Half the messages and speeches and lyrics are so I can drill them into myself. I think I’ve said enough positive things that I believe them now, so I guess this is opening up the doors for us to keep accepting what comes naturally to us and developing our intuition in that way. I’m excited to see what kind of music we can create because we’re no longer chained to pop-punk. I feel like that’s where we were three years ago, but with Limitless I feel like we have a clean slate and an open door that we don’t know where it leads to, but I’m happy with that. I like the unknown. I challenge myself in ways that I wouldn’t do when I was younger, like cutting my hair a certain way or creating the costumes I wear on stage. I challenge myself and therefore I improve myself. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”

Tonight Alive are on tour until December 18 . Limitless is out now.

Heart Extends Massive 2024 Reunion Tour with Shows in Nashville, L.A., N.Y.C. and More — See the Dates!

T he rock legends will be setting out on tour along with Cheap Trick, BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening

After a five year hiatus, allow Heart to go "Crazy On You" with their thrilling live show and long-awaited return to the stage!

The rockers previously announced they were setting out on a massive tour in 2024 — marking their reunion and first run of live shows since 2019 — and, on Tuesday, Heart revealed they're expanding the dates. The group helmed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will now continue their run, titled the Royal Flush Tour, across North America through the end of the year, along with an A-list slate of special guests.

While the "Barracuda" group's shows this year were originally set to kick off in late April and wrap up by September, they'll now be out on the road through the fall until mid-December.

Heart's 2024 tour kicks off on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, continues in the U.S. through May, before heading to Europe for a handful of dates in June and July. On July 30, they'll resume their North American leg in Columbus, Ohio, and then play through the rest of the summer and into the fall.

The newly announced dates begin on Sept. 26 in San Francisco and last until Dec. 15 in Las Vegas. Fans will be able to catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees at stadiums in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Nashville, New York City, Vancouver, San Diego and many others.

Throughout the Royal Flush Tour, the "Magic Man" band will be joined by fellow rock legends Cheap Trick, and select shows will also include support from BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening, the project from the son of the English rock group's original drummer.

The Wilson sisters shared a statement in press release about the upcoming concerts.

"We’re so excited to announce more tour dates," Ann, 73, said. “The exceptional talent of the band — Ryan, Ryan, Paul, Tony and Sean — brings a whole new level of energy to Heart’s live performance."

Nancy, 70, added, "I am incredibly proud of the show that we have crafted and am looking forward to reconnecting with even more fans. We can’t wait to share our music with everyone and celebrate the big electric energy of a completely live on the spot rock show."

The Royal Flush Tour comes after the rock favorites celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

It also marks their first time out on the road together since 2019, when the "Alone" group set out on their Love Alive Tour. At the time, the shows saw the Wilsons coming back together after the two experience a brief rift. (In 2016, Ann's husband,  Dean Wetter, assaulted Nancy's then-16-year-old sons  after they reportedly left a tour bus door open, which he pleaded guilty to two non-felony assault charges.)

Both Ann and Nancy also recently took time to record their own solo efforts: Ann with Fierce Bliss in 2022 and Nancy with You and Me in 2021.

The two hitmakers have both explained to PEOPLE in interviews that taking time apart only makes their work together in Heart stronger.

"[Taking time apart] allows us to bring stuff back to Heart that we didn't have before," Ann said in a 2022 interview . "We love each other. She and I really look forward to smooth sailing."

Meanwhile, Nancy shared in a 2021 conversation that it was "so amazing" to get back out on the road together on their 2019 tour. "I could see that the Heart fans really loved the big spectacle aspects of the show — even if Ann didn't love the bubble machine I had requested," she said. "But most of all we saw how much the Heart fans loved the Heart sisters reunited."

While the previously announced concerts are already on sale , tickets for the fall dates go on sale later this week. Ticket sales kick off with a presale for Citi cardmembers, which lasts from now until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time. The general on-sale will then follow on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

Tonight Alive’s Jenna McDougall shares debut single as Hevenshe, ‘No One Will Ever Love You’

McDougall tells NME how The Strokes and Courtney Barnett have inspired her new solo project – and reveals the comeback of Tonight Alive with returning guitarist Whakaio Taahi

Hevenshe

Today (June 7), Tonight Alive vocalist Jenna McDougall launches her solo project Hevenshe with the single ‘No One Will Ever Love You’, which arrives ahead of her debut live show under the moniker this week.

Hevenshe has been a while coming – the first song for the project was written in 2018, ten years after McDougall joined Tonight Alive. Over their four albums, the Sydney outfit evolved from scrappy pop-punk band to ambitious, experimental, conscious-rock group, without ever losing their snarling passion or heart-on-sleeve honesty.

At the end of 2018, though, they cancelled a US headline tour “to address and prioritise our mental and physical health” and apart from a one-off Tonight Alive & Friends show at Unify 2020, they’ve been on hiatus ever since.

In 2018, Tonight Alive had embarked on a gruelling stint on travelling punk festival Warped Tour and McDougall was getting heavily into the sprawling rock landscapes of The War On Drugs . She had already told the rest of the band she had no interest in writing another record with Tonight Alive – the departure of guitarist Whakaio Taahi, announced October 2017, had been “too hard” for her – and so every song she wrote was for herself. That gave rise to the first song for the Hevenshe project, ‘Wild Wild Heart’.

‘No One Will Ever Love You’ followed a year later, but the bulk of Hevenshe’s music (which currently stands at around 40 songs) was created in 2020 and 2021 when McDougall was locked down in her Melbourne flat with a secondhand piano she’d got for $100.

But Hevenshe isn’t a part-time lockdown project. “I want to be a headline act. I want to play festivals and I want to be busy,” McDougall tells NME . “I want to be creating nonstop and right now, I want to do that as Hevenshe. Tonight Alive will have its moment again but this isn’t just a get-it-out-of-your-system-and-move-on project. This is the next evolution of me as an artist. I’m going to give this all the years that I can.”

McDougall will launch Hevenshe with a gig at Sydney’s Crowbar this Friday (June 10) – read on for her interview with NME about the inspiration behind ‘No One Will Ever Love You’, the future of Tonight Alive and why now for a solo project.

What inspired ‘No One Will Ever Love You’?

“I’d left a relationship that we both thought would never end. I was such a devastating break-up with this person who’d been my best friend and my soulmate not wanting contact with me anymore. I had so much to say that I couldn’t direct anywhere, so this song is me saying my last piece.

“The first line of the song, “ no one will ever love you as much as I do ”, is actually what they said and it’s always felt like a threat – why wouldn’t you want me to be loved, even if it’s not by you? The song goes through a lot of stages, it’s bitter, then sweet and there’s a lot of acceptance as well. It covered what it’s like to grieve, losing someone you love.”

Why launch Hevenshe with this song?

“When I wrote the song, I just knew that this was my new sound. It felt new but also authentic and it was the first time I’d written a song that I could see shaping my future. It’s also not too far removed from Tonight Alive – it’s got that pop punk palm-muted verse, heartfelt lyrics and uplifting melodies but it’s not aggressive.”

And what about the other songs, what’s been inspiring them?

“ The Strokes have definitely rubbed off on me. I’ve also been inspired by Bob Dylan and Courtney Barnett , especially with how they sing in a more spoken way. That’s given me the licence to enjoy singing instead of doing it as an extreme sport, which is what singing in Tonight Alive was. Hevenshe definitely won’t be easy to pigeonhole, though.

“As for the lyrics, I had so much processing to do. I was doing a lot of therapy once we got off the road then I got out of that relationship, moved away from home and then lockdown happened. It was a time of rapid transformation that uncovered trauma, fears and doubts. I went on a deep-dive of self-discovery and healing. There are so many songs that people will never hear but I’ve covered everything from relationships with parents, coming off the road and having to learn who I was outside of Jenna From Tonight Alive, to getting into a healthy relationship. They’re all very intimate but I think they have the potential to speak to a lot of people.”

tonight alive tour

Why Hevenshe instead of Jenna McDougall?

“I love a one-word moniker and I wanted this to be a character or a persona. Hevenshe isn’t that far removed from who I am, but it’s a more progressive, advanced, elevated version of myself, that I can aspire to be. It felt most natural to want to become more than I am.”

And why now for a solo project?

“I always thought I’d be a folk singer-songwriter when I was younger but then I got into pop-punk as a teenager which led to Tonight Alive. I’ve waited years to do this, but I didn’t have the skill, competence, or the songs. That all took years to develop. It’s been a rite of passage for me as well, because previously, I’ve always written songs with other people but this is all me. Now does feel like the perfect time, though. I’ve just turned 30 and it feels like this whole new era in my life as well as my career.”

What’s the future of Tonight Alive?

“Interestingly, the start of Hevenshe has aligned with the comeback of Tonight Alive. There’s no official, scheduled reunion but we’ve discussed making music and touring again, and that will involve Whakaio. He’s the one that instigated the reunion actually, and I really didn’t know if it was ever going to happen. The first day I went into the studio to record for HevenShe earlier this year was the day the band all got on a call together and discussed the future. It’s strange how they’ve both aligned.”

Do you think you have things to prove with Hevenshe?

“There are nerves because I’m doing a lot of this myself, so I’m nervous about the workload but I’m not nervous about creating, self-expression or being an extrovert again. I feel really confident in myself, in the music and in myself as a performer. I hope it’s not an overconfidence, but I just feel aligned right now. I don’t really need or want anyone’s approval. I feel like I’m good enough and that’s been a process… I didn’t always feel like that. I feel good coming into this without fear.”

‘Shogun’ Episode 7 Recap: Death Wish

As the walls close in around Lord Toranaga, his vassals and family look for ways out.

A man wearing black and gold armor and a matching cloth hat looks warily to his left.

By Sean T. Collins

Season 1, Episode 7: ‘A Stick of Time’

“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” Few cinematic genres have had as fruitful a conversation with one another as the samurai film and the western, so it’s only fitting to use an epigraph from “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” to sum up the central conflict in this week’s episode.

It begins in full “print the legend mode,” as the director Takeshi Fukunaga brings us a dreamlike flashback depicting the aftermath of Lord Toranaga’s first victory in battle, achieved before he’d have been bar mitzvah’d. The rogue warrior whose forces he defeats calls for the young Toranaga himself to serve as his second in the ritual of seppuku. An overhead shot shows us the lad preparing to strike the deathblow from a point of view that feels a million miles away, less a bird’s-eye view than a god’s.

But looks can be deceiving. Ask Saeki (Eita Okuno), Toranaga’s estranged half brother, upon whose support the lord of Edo is counting if his fight against Lady Ochiba and the Regents is to be successful. He’s happy to tell Toranaga’s adoring son, Nagakado, that his pops severed the head of the rebel with a single stroke at the tender age of 12. No such thing occurred — Toranaga hacked away nine times like a miniature ax murderer before finally decapitating the man.

But Saeki isn’t doing this to flatter his older brother. He’s doing it to taunt him. He knows Toranaga’s sense of honor will make hearing exaggerated accounts of his exploits uncomfortable. And he knows that by elevating Nagakado’s image of his father, he can send it crashing back down all the more easily. So he tosses in the tale of how young Toranaga soiled himself when he was sent away as a hostage. That’s not the kind of story that makes it into the legendarium.

It’s also not the kind of story you tell if you plan to ally yourself with the boy who fouled his breeches. Indeed, despite initially giving every appearance to the contrary, Saeki has no intention of taking up his older brother’s cause. He announces that he has accepted Lord Ishido’s offer of membership on the Council of Regents, and has been dispatched to summon Toranaga to his impeachment and execution. It takes everything the lord has left in him to prevent his Nagakado from blindly accepting Ishido’s order to commit seppuku over the cannon attack he ordered in Episode 4.

The Toranaga of decades past wasn’t fit to deliver the coup de grâce to the rebel lord, and the Toranaga of today refuses to do the same to his country. He could defend himself, issue the order for Crimson Sky, make war on Osaka, declare himself shogun — but he won’t. “No one has the right to tear the realm apart,” he tells his assembled vassals as he agrees to surrender to the Council.

There’s just one problem with Toranaga’s pacifism: It’s not just his own execution to which he’s marching. His household, family and many of his vassals will be expected to follow him in death. “Behold the great warlord,” Blackthorne sneers when he understands what’s happening. “Brilliant master of trickery, who tricked his own loyal vassals into a noiseless smothering.” He turns to those lords and warriors and addresses them in their own language, “You’re all dead.” (He spares a parting expletive for the Crimson Sky plan.)

Blackthorne isn’t the only person sworn to Toranaga’s service who’d prefer not to go gently into that good night. Elsewhere in the episode, Yabushige makes a failed attempt to broker a separate peace; Ishido sends his emissary’s severed head back in a box.

But one character take matters even more directly into his own hands. Acting in concert with the courtesan Kiku, Nagakado leads a small band of assassins into the teahouse where Saeki is enjoying Kiku’s services. But the fight that ensues ends in disaster when Nagakado slips and falls before his own attempt to chop off an enemy’s head, braining himself on a rock in the teahouse’s garden. Even Saeki, who’d betrayed Nagakado’s father and was seconds away from dying by the youth’s sword, feels the sting of the loss. “Where is the beauty in this?” he says, staring down at the corpse.

Perhaps he might ask Buntaro and Mariko. This unhappy couple is morbid in the extreme. Buntaro wants nothing more than to kill Blackthorne for warming his wife’s icy heart in a way he never could. Buntaro came dangerously close to taking out Blackthorne when he interrupted a friendly sparring session between the Anjin and Lord Yabushige, but opted to submit the issue to Toranaga later as a formal request.

(For his part, Yabushige remains the show’s wild card, as apt to ostentatiously bathe in the presence of Saeki’s soldiers as he is to boil one of Blackthorne’s men alive. You never know with this guy!)

Even as her husband aims to punish her lover, Mariko desires above all to kill herself, finally following the rest of her family. Like Buntaro, she puts this request directly before her liege lord.

Toranaga denies them both, going so far as to slap the ceremonial blade from Mariko’s hand. It’s enough to make you wonder if Kiku’s madame, Gin (Yuko Miyamoto), is right when she notes that it’s out of character for a seasoned warlord like Toranaga to leave his forces so vulnerable to those of his brother. If he truly planned to meekly submit to his own death, why would he be so forcefully averse to Mariko’s?

Maybe there’s more to the future than meets the eye. That’s certainly Gin’s belief. After Mariko brokers a brief meeting between the madame and Lord Toranaga in exchange for Kiku’s services with Saeki, Gin uses her time to ask for the construction of a special red-light district in Toranaga’s burgeoning city, Edo. When he protests that he has no future to offer her, she doesn’t buy it. Surely the great Toranaga has one last legend in him.

An earlier version of the article misidentified the name of the courtesan character. She is called Kiku, not Fuji.

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
