The 2023 men's Tour de France began in Bilbao, Spain on Saturday, July 1, with a route that looks set to be one for the climbers. It features four summit finishes, including a return for the iconic Puy de Dôme climb for the first time since 1988.
There is just one time trial across the three-week event, a short uphill race against the clock from Passy to Combloux over 22km. There are also returns for other epic climbs like the Col de la Loze and the Grand Colombier, with 56,400 metres of climbing on the Tour de France 2023 route.
The race started on foreign soil for the second year in a row, with a Grand Départ in the Spanish Basque Country , the setting for the race's 120th anniversary. There were two hilly stages in Spain, before the peloton crossed the border into France for a stage finish in Bayonne on day three.
After visiting Pau for the 74th time on stage five, the race's first real mountain test came on stage six, leaving Tarbes and cresting the Col d’Aspin and Col du Tourmalet before a summit finish in Cauterets.
On stage seven, the Tour’s second most visited city, Bordeaux, will welcome its first stage finish since 2010, when Mark Cavendish claimed his 14th of a record 34 stage wins. Leaving nearby Libourne the next day, stage eight will head east on a 201km slog to Limoges.
Before the first rest day, the riders will wind up to the summit of the Puy de Dôme, a dormant lava dome which hasn’t featured in the Tour for 35 years. They’ll then enjoy a well-earned day off in Clermont-Ferrand before continuing their passage through the Massif Central.
France’s national holiday, 14 July, will be celebrated next year with a summit finish on the Grand Colombier, the site of Tadej Pogačar ’s second stage win back in 2020. From there, the mountains keep coming. The riders will climb over the Col de Joux Plaine to Morzine on stage 14, before another mountaintop test in Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc the next day.

The sole individual time trial of the Tour de Franc route comes on stage 16, when a hilly 22km dash from Passy to Combloux will give the GC contenders a chance to force time gaps. The following day will bring the stage with the highest elevation gain, counting 5000m of climbing en route to the Courchevel altiport, via the Cormet de Roselend and the monstrous Col de la Loze.
On stages 18 and 19, the sprinters are expected to come to the fore, with flat finishes in Bourg-en-Bresse and Poligny.
The penultimate stage will play out in the country’s most easterly region, ascending the Petit Ballon, Col du Platzerwasel and finishing in Le Markstein, as the Tour de France Femmes did last year.
The riders will then undertake a 500km transfer to the outskirts of Paris for the curtain-closing stage. The final day will start at France’s national velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, the track cycling venue for the 2024 Olympics, and will conclude with the customary laps of the capital’s Champs-Elysées.
The 2023 Tour de France will begin on 1 July, with the winner crowned in Paris on 23 July.

Tour de France route week summary
Tour de france week one.
The race began in Bilbao, starting in the Basque Country for the first time since 1992, when the Tour started in San Sebastian. The first two stages are packed full of climbs, with ten classified hills in over the opening couple of days, meaning there will be a fierce battle for the polka-dot jersey. Watch out for Basque fans going crazy on the roadside.
Stage three saw the race cross into France, which it will not leave for the rest of the 18 days. As expected we saw a sprint finish in Bayonne, even after four categorised climbs en-route. Nothing is easy this year.
The fourth day was another sprint, on a motor racing circuit in Nogaro, as the race moved, ominously, towards the Pyrenees. The Hors Categorie Col de Soudet on stage five was the first proper mountain of the race, and was followed by the Col de Marie Blanque, which has tough gradients. A GC day early on, although they are all GC days, really.
Stage five was a mountain top finish in Cauterets-Cambasque, but its gradients didn't catch too many out; it is the Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet that will put people through it.
The seventh day of the race was a chance for the riders to relax their legs as the race headed northwest to an almost nailed-on sprint finish, before another opportunity for the the remaining fast men presented itself on stage eight - after two category four climbs towards the end, and an uphill finish.
The long first week of the race - which will have felt longer because last year had a bonus rest day - ended with the mythical Puy de Dôme.
Tour de France week two
Magnus Cort in the breakaway on stage 10 of the Tour de France 2022
The second week begins with a lumpy road stage around Clermont-Ferrand, starting from a volcano-themed theme park. This will surely be a day for the break. The next day could also be one if the sprint teams fail to get their act together, with two early categorised climbs potential ambush points.
Back into the medium mountains on stage 12, with a finish in the wine making heartland of the Beaujolais, Belleville. Another day for the break, probably, but none of the five categorised climbs are easy.
The following day, stage 13, is France's national holiday, 14 Juillet. The Grand Colombier at the end of the day is the big attraction, with its slopes expected to cause shifts on the GC. Stage 14 is yet another mountain stage as the Tour really gets serious, with the Col de la Ramaz followed by the Col de Joux Plane. The latter, 11.6km at 8.5%, will be a real test for a reduced peloton, before a downhill finish into Morzine.
The final day of week two, stage 15, is yet another day in the Alps before a rest day in Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc. There is nothing as fearsome as the previous days, but 4527m of climbing should still be feared.
Tour de France week three
Tadej Pogačar in the final time trial at the 2022 Tour de France
The third and final week begins with the race's only time trial, 22km long and with a lot of uphill. It is not a mountain event, but it is certainly not one for the pure rouleurs .
Stage 17 looks like the race's Queen Stage, with the final climb up to the Col de la Loze looking incredibly tough on paper, and in real life. That follows the Col de Saisies, the Cormet de Roselend and the Côte de Longefoy, adding up to 5,100m of climbing. The race might be decided on this day.
After that, there is a nice day for the sprinters on stage 18, with a flat finish in Bourg-en-Bresse surely one for the fast men. The next day, stage 19 could be a breakaway day or a sprint finish, depending on how desperate teams are feeling, or how powerful the remaining leadout trains are.
The final mountainous day comes on the penultimate stage, with the men following the Femmes lead and finishing in Le Markstein. However, there's no Grand Ballon, just the Petit Ballon, and so unless something chaotic happens, there should not be great time switches on this stage.
Then, at last, there is the usual finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, after the race heads out of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, which has a long-term deal to host the start of Paris-Nice too. ASO country.
Remember, this will be the last time Paris hosts the Tour de France until 2025. So, be prepared.
Tour de France 2023: The stages
Stage one: Bilbao to Bilbao (182km)
The opening stage is very lumpy
There was no easing into the Tour de France for the peloton this year, with a tough, punchy day in the Basque Country. Adam Yates took the first yellow jersey of the 2023 Tour de France after a scintillating stage in the Basque Country that saw the overall battle for the Tour take shape at the earliest opportunity.
The Briton emerged clear over the top of the final climb of the stage, the short and steep Côte de Pike, with his twin brother Simon a few seconds behind him. The pair worked well together to stay clear of the chasing bunch of GC contenders before Adam rode his brother off his wheel inside the final few hundred metres to claim victory.
Stage two: Vitoria-Gasteiz to Saint Sebastian (208.9km)
Still in the Basque Country, there is a Klasikoa theme to stage two
This was the longest stage of the Tour, surprisingly. Five more categorised climbs meant it was unlikely to be a sprint stage, including the Jaizkibel, famous from the Clasica San Sebastian, tackled on its eastern side 20km from the finish. This second stage from Vitoria Gasteiz to San Sebastian on the Basque coast followed many of the roads of the San Sebastian Classic, held here every summer.
An early break was soon established in the first 50km and established a three-minute advantage. However, the break was reeled in and a group, including the yellow jersey Adam Yates, pressed towards the finish with Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) clearly hoping it would finish in a sprint.
Victor Lafay (Cofidis) had other ideas however, and with all and sundry already having attacked Van Aert, Lafay finally made it stick with a kilometre to go, holding off the reduced bunch all the way to the line.
Stage three: Amorebiata-Etxano to Bayonne (187.4km)
Still some hills, but this should be a sprint stage
The third stage took the riders from Amorebieta-Etxano in the Basque Country and back into France, finishing at Bayonne in what was always tipped to be a bunch sprint. Ultimately, despite a very strong showing in the leadout by Fabio Jakobsen's Soudal-Quick Step team, it was Jasper Philipsen who triumphed , having benefited from a deluxe leadout by team-mate Mathieu Van Der Poel.
Mark Cavendish, who is hunting for a record 35th stage win in what will be his final Tour de France, was sixth.
Stage four: Dax to Nogaro (181.8km)
A nailed on bunch sprint, surely. Surely!
Now this one was always going to be a sprint finish, right? It finished on a motor racing circuit in Nogaro, meaning teams have a long old time to sort their leadout trains. After a sleepy day out all hell broke lose on the finishing circuit with a series of high speed crashes. Jasper Philipsen was one of the few sprinters to still have a lead-out man at his disposal and when that lead-out man is of the quality of Mathieu van der Poel he was always going to be very difficult to beat. So it proved with Australian Caleb Ewan chasing him down hard but unable to come around him. Philipsen's win handed him the green jersey too .
Stage five: Pau to Laruns (162.7km)
The first proper mountain, and the first sorting out, as early as stage five
The first Hors Categorie climb of the race came on stage five, the Col de Soudet, which is 15.2km at 7.2%, before the Col de Marie-Blanque and its steep gradients. It certainly ignited the GC battle!
A break that at one point contained 37 riders was never allowed more than a few minutes, but that proved unwise for Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar behind. Ultimately, with the break already splintering on the final big climb – the Col de Marie-Blanque – Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), riding his first Tour de France, attacked.
With Hindley time trialling the largely downhill 18km to the finish, Vingegaard attempted to chase him down – and put time into Pogačar as he did so.
Picking up strays from the early break on the way, Vingegaard got to within 34 seconds of Hindley, but it wasn't enough to stop the Australian from taking the stage win, and the yellow jersey .
Stage six: Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque (144.9km)
While in the Pyrenees, why not tackle a few more mountains?
A day of aggressive racing in the Pyrenees towards the first summit finish saw Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) take the yellow jersey but Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates) win the stage .
Having had his team set a blistering pace on the Col du Tourmalet, Vingegaard attacked with 4km until the summit. Only Pogačar could follow him as yellow jersey holder Jai Hindley dropped back to the peloton
Having joined up with super domestique Wout van Aert over the top, the group of favourites were towed up the first half of the final climb before Vingegaard attacked. Once again Pogačar followed and with two kilometers to go the Slovenian counter-attacked.
He clawed back nearly half a minute by the line, making the race for yellow a three horse race between those two and Hindley in the process.
Stage seven: Mont-de-Marsan to Bordeaux (169.9km)
Bordeaux is always a sprint finish
Renowned as a sprint finish town, Bordeaux didn't disappoint the hopeful fastmen –except perhaps for Mark Cavendish, who had to concede victory to hat-trick man Jasper Philipsen, despite a very strong charge for the line from the Manxman .
With Cavendish hunting that elusive 35th record stage win, and having won here last time the Tour came visiting in 2010, many eyes were on the Astana Qazaqstan rider, with on-form Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who has won twice already, starting as favourite.
The day began with Arkéa-Samsic's Simon Gugliemi forging what turned out to be a solo break that lasted 130 kilometres. He was joined by Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) and Nans Peters (Ag2r-Citroën) halfway through the stage, the trio forming a purposeful triumvirate of home riders.
However, with the sprinters and their teams on the hunt and few places to hide on what was a hot day crammed with long, straight roads, the break served only as a placeholder for the day's main action in Bordeaux.
A technical finish with roundabouts aplenty, first Jumbo-Visma (in the service of GC leader Jonas Vingegaard) and then Alpecin-Deceuninck took the race by the scruff of the neck in the final. Philipsen enjoyed a marquee leadout from team-mate Mathieu Van Der Poel, but when Cavendish turned on the afterburners at around 150m and leapt forward, the whole cycling world held its breath.
That 35th stage win had to wait for another day though, with Philipsen sweeping past in what was yet another command performance from the Belgian.
Stage eight: Libourne to Limoges (200.7km)
Three categorised climbs in the final 70km could catch people out
Mads Pedersen powered to victory up a punchy finish on stage eight of the Tour de France , managing to hold off green jersey Jasper Philipsen in the process.
Pedersen, the Lidl-Trek rider, now has two Tour stage wins to his name, in a finish which mixed pure sprinters and punchier riders. Alpecin-Deceuninck's Philipsen was third, with Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in third. To prove how mixed the top ten was, however, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) finished behind the likes of Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis).
On a day which could have been one for the breakaway, the race was controlled expertly by Jumbo, Trek and Alpecin for their options, and so the escapees were never allowed much time. Sadly, stage eight turned out to Mark Cavendish's last - the Astana-Qazaqstan rider crashed heavily and was forced to abandon .
Stage nine: Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat to Puy de Dôme (184km)
The Puy de Dôme is back, and is vicious
In a north American showdown it was Canada that came out on top as Michael Woods beat American rival Matteo Jorgenson to the win atop the legendary Puy de Dôme.
Jorgenson had gone solo form a breakaway with 40km left to race. However, on the slopes of the Puy de Dôme where the gradient remains over 105 for more than four kilometres, Woods closed the gap and came around Jorgenson with just 600m left to go.
In the final kilometre, of what had been a blisteringly hot day with temperatures north of 30 degree Celsius, Tadej Pogačar managed to drop Jonas Vingegaard but the Jumbo-Visma captain dug deep to minimise his losses and came across the line eight seconds down.
Stage 10: Vulcania to Issoire (162.7km)
Five categorised climbs over this Volcanic stage
The breakaway had its day in Issoire, as Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) won beneath the scorching sun in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
After a frantic start, the mood finally settled and a 14-rider move went clear. Krists Neilands (Israel Premier Tech) launched a solo bid with around 30km remaining, but was caught in the closing moments by a chasing group led by Bilbao. The Spaniard then policed attacks in the finale, before sprinting to his team's first victory at this year's race.
"For Gino," Bilbao said afterwards, dedicating his win to his late teammate, Gino Mäder .
Stage 11: Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins (179.8km)
The flat finalé hints at a sprint, but it could be a break day
After a difficult previous day that was hot and hilly, the bunch allowed the break to go very quickly, with Andrey Amador, Matis Louvel and Daniel Oss quickly gaining three minutes. They were kept on a tight leash though, with the sprinters' teams eyeing a bunch finish. And this they delivered, with Jasper Philipsen winning a fourth stage after a tricky finale.
Stage 12: Roanne to Belleville-en-Beaujolais (168.8km)
Hills return, with some steep, punchy ones towards the end
Just like stage ten, Thursday's stage 12 was a fast and frenetic affair on the road to Belleville-en-Beaujolais. A strong group of puncheur type riders eventually got up the road after the breakaway took more than 80 kilometres to form. Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) came out on top at the finish, soloing to the line after a big attack on the final climb of the day.
Stage 13: Châtillon-Sur-Chalaronne to Grand Colombier (138km)
Welcome to the Alps, here's an hors categorie climb
Michał Kwiatkowski took an impressive solo victory on the summit finish of the Grand Colombier. The Polish rider caught and passed the remnants of the day's breakaway which included Great Britain's James Shaw to grab his second-ever Tour stage win. Behind the Ineos rider, Tadej Pogačar attacked and took eight seconds back on Jonas Vingegaard in the fight for the yellow jersey.
Stage 14: Annemasse to Morzine Les Portes du Soleil (151.8km)
Five categorised climbs, four of which are one and above. Ouch.
Carlos Rodríguez announced himself on his Tour de France debut on stage 14 with a career-defining victory in Morzine. While all eyes were on Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar, the Spaniard broke free on the descent of the Col de Joux Plane and descended as if on rails to the finish.
Stage 15: Les Gets Les Portes du Soleil to Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc (179km)
Back to a summit finish, there is no escape at this Tour
The breakaway had its day at the summit of Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc. After dedicating his career to domestique duties, the victory went to Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious), who launched a late attack on the steepest slopes and held off Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) to the line.
Stage 16: Passy to Combloux ITT (22.4km)
A time trial! But not a flat one
Stage 16 brought the fewest time trial kilometres at the Tour de France in 90 years. On the uphill test to Combloux, Jonas Vingegaard proved the strongest , and by quite a way, too. The Dane's winning margin of 1-38 over Tadej Pogačar left him in the driving seat to taking his second Tour title.
Stage 17: Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc to Courchevel (165.7km)
Back to the proper mountains, and there will be no let up on the final Wednesday
The Queen stage brought a career-defining victory for Austrian Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën), but all eyes were on the GC battle, and the demise of Tadej Pogačar. The UAE Team Emirates rider cracked on the slopes of the Col de la Loze, losing almost six minutes to Jonas Vingegaard, and slipping to 7-35 in the overall standings.
Stage 18: Moûtiers to Bourg-en-Bresse (184.9km)
Two category four climbs on the road to a chicken-themed sprint
Denmark's Kasper Asgreen put in one of the best performances of the race to grab his first-ever Tour victory . The Soudal Quick-Step rider was part of a four man breakaway that managed to hold on all the way to the line by just a handful of seconds ahead of the peloton.
Stage 19: Moirans-en-Montagne to Poligny (172.8km)
Another sprint, maybe, or a heartbreaking chase which fails to bring the breakaway back
Matej Mohorič of Bahrain Victorious took an emotional victory in Poligny after a chaotic day of racing. The Slovenian rider launched an attack with Kasper Asgreen and Ben O'Connor on the final climb of the hilly stage before beating his breakaway compatriots in a three-up sprint for the line. It was Mohorič's third-ever Tour victory.
Stage 20: Belfort to Le Markstein Fellering (133.5km)
One last chance. Six categorised climbs, will it shake up the GC?
The race might be very near Germany at this point, but Belfort remained French after the Franco-Prussian War, unlike the territory the penultimate stage travels into.
This is the last chance saloon for all teams and riders who aren’t sprinters, especially those with GC ambitions. However, it is not quite the task of the previous Alpine days, with the six categorised climbs not the most testing. Still, there will be a lot of people trying to make things happen.
Stage 21: Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines to Paris (115.1km)
The classic Parisian sprint. Lovely.
This will be the last time the Tour heads to Paris until at least 2025, so make the most of those shots of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées. The classic procession will happen for the first 55km until the race hits the Champs for the first time 60km in. From that point on, anything goes, although that anything will probably be a bunch sprint.

2023 Rigs of the Tour Divide Breakdown: Stats Analysis…
Each year, we publish the Rigs of the Tour Divide, showcasing participants’ bike setups and gear. This time around, 124 folks submitted their kits for our two-part mega gallery. In this post and video, we dive into the stats and share some interesting findings from tire size to drivetrains and from types of seat posts to how many riders used racks. Find it all here…
It’s always fun to dig into the rigs of the Tour Divide. I originated the “Rigs of” series in 2014 on Bikepacker.com, and it continues today on BIKEPACKING.com. It’s so exciting to see all of the bikes and equipment used in these events. Some of them look brand new, and others have a little patina, but one thing is certain: each is entirely unique, making this race fascinating year after year. In this video, I unpacked some trends I found while scouring this year’s flat-bar and drop bar-rigs. Watch below and then scroll down for a written version, complete with pie charts to outline the stats.
Types of Bikes
Let’s start with bike type, as that’s how we separated our two “Rigs of” articles. We received 64 flat-bar rigs and 60 drop-bar rigs for the 2023 event. There was a broad sampling of bike brands in the flat-bar and drop-bar categories; among other brands, there were three Cannondales, three Surlys, four Specialized, four Otsos, four Chumbas, and seven Treks. Salsa Cycles again takes the cake with six flat-bar bikes and a whopping 26 drop-bar bikes, totaling 32 bikes or 25% of the field. Cutthroats were by far the most popular bike, with 22 folks riding them, followed by seven Salsa Fargos. If there is one thing that remains the same each year, it’s that the Cutthroat—which was specifically designed for the Tour Divide—is still the most popular bike by leaps and bounds.
The number of riders using suspension was also a pretty interesting metric to look at. Of the 64 flat-bar bikes, over half of them (33) have some sort of suspension fork, whereas only 14 (8%) of the drop-bar bikes had suspension forks. This is no surprise as stock hardtails usually come with suspension forks, whereas drop-bar bikes tend to come with rigid forks. There were also only three complete suspension bikes among this year’s rigs, and perhaps an interesting note: two gravel-specific forks that have very narrow tire clearance.
Tires and Tire Size
Those two bikes and two other rigs had tires at or under 45mm, and two others had 47mm Teravail Rutlands. That’s narrow for a route with a lot of chunky terrain. I should mention one of those bikes is the one shown above left, a classic fixed-gear, rim-brake bike from Adrian Stingaciu, aka Super Vegan, the third-place 2008 finisher and one of the riders in the “Ride the Divide” film that inspired so many of us.
Generally speaking, folks tend to stick to tires over two inches in width, as that extra volume and grip helps with the rough terrain, but it’s clear everyone has their own personal preference. Most of the tires seem to be 2.1, 2.2, and 2.35″ wide, and one thing that stood out was the Vittoria Mezcal party; I’m testing a set right now, and I’m enjoying them, but I had no idea they turned into the tire of choice for the Tour Divide. There are 32 flat-bar bikes running Mezcals and 31 drop-bar bikes with them, making that 63 out of the 124 total rigs using Mezcals; that’s over half the bikes with the same tire pattern, which is pretty wild. There were also 22 bikes with Maxxis tires, with most of them running Maxxis Ikons. But there were also some Mezcal/Ikon combos, which I always love to see. Another popular option was the Fleecer Ridge from Rene Herse; there were 14 of them in the roundup. Then there was a smattering of Teravail, WTB, Continental, and other brands. All but 11 of the bikes were 29″, and the rest were 27.5”. And there were only two bikes with 29 x 3.0 plus tires; even 2.6″ tires weren’t very common, with only three folks running them from what we can see in this year’s rigs.
Drivetrains
While not everyone stated their gearing, let’s get into some essential findings. Most of the bikes have a derailleur. In fact, every drop-bar bike was rocking a derailleur and gears. As for the flat bar bikes, there was more variation, with one Pinion gearbox, two Rohloff Speed Hubs, eight badass singlespeeders, and Adrien’s fixed-geared bike. Another notable finding was that 51 of the drop-bar bikes were 1x, with only 10 2x drivetrains and one 3x drivetrain in the mix. When I raced the Tour Divide a while back, I did it with a 34t chainring and an 11-42t cassette—this was before 12-speed drivetrains. The climbing gear was fine, but I was looking for more top-end speed, and if I were to race again, I would probably run a 2x variation with a 46-tooth chainring up front to accomplish that.
A few other interesting notes on drivetrains: I counted 33 folks who were using SRAM AXS wireless drivetrains, two of which were the new transmission. And to my surprise, I saw zero Di2 drivetrains, which is a shocker considering the limited battery life of one SRAM AXS battery vs. a Di2 battery. For what it’s worth, Mike Hall set the Tour Divide record on a Di2 drivetrain in 2016.
Overall, SRAM was by far the most popular brand of drivetrain with 77 folks using Eagle or another SRAM variation. Behind that, 34 rigs had Shimano groups, and one was using a Sensah derailleur among the group. One other bike had an Shimano rear derailleur and a Campy front. Either way, it’s wild to see that SRAM has become so popular, even though Shimano GRX was designed for gravel and dirt roads.
Aero bars, Racks, Bags, and Seat Posts
Aero bars are another popular talking point. Of the drop-bar bikes, 54 used an aero bar or arm rests attached to the handlebar. There were an additional 51 aero bars on flat-bar bikes. That makes roughly 85 percent of riders using aero bars. And when we talk about aero bars for an event like this, it’s not really to be aero, although it can help in times of high winds. It simply creates another riding position, and from my experience, it’s really enjoyable to get off your hands and put your weight on your forearms from time to time. I would certainly go this route again.
Bags are always an exciting part of these roundups too, and I love to see how many bikes have no true allegiance to one bag manufacturer. Out of the 124 bikes that were in our two “Rigs of” articles, only 13 stuck to one brand. And roughly half of those folks were sponsored by bike brands or had a relationship with the brand.
Thirty-nine of the rigs in the bunch were rocking some sort of rack, with 27 of them being a Tailfin Aeropack. There were also racks from Tumbleweed, Old Man Mountain, and other brands. Of the folks using racks, only six of them were also using dropper posts, which is the primary reason I tend to use a rack these days. Seven additional riders were using dropper posts with seat packs, making the total number of folks using dropper posts 13, which is pretty slim. It’s also worth mentioning that only two drop-bar bikes had a dropper. That said, there were a bunch of suspension posts out there: 21 total, with 13 Cane Creek Thudbuster os eeSilk posts and eight Redshift posts.
Finally, let’s talk about the people who make this event so incredible. Back in 2008, 17 individuals started, and only eight finished. This year, more than 280 folks signed up to race, including 27 women, and as I mentioned, there were 124 who participated in these “Rigs of” articles. Of those participants, there are folks from all over the world, but the top five countries are as follows: three individuals each from France, England, Germany, and Belgium; five from Australia; eight from New Zealand; 21 from Canada; and 72 from the United States. Most of these folks are from Colorado (10), California (7), Minnesota (6), Wisconsin (4), and Oregon (4). It’s cool to see the Midwest representing.
And the best part of this is the age spread: the top age group for parts one and two of The Rigs of the Tour Divide was the 30s, with 36 people participating in that age range. That was followed by folks in their 40s, with 29 riders representing. Participants in their 50s were next with 23 folks, then the 60s with 21, followed by the 20s at 15, and just one 18-year-old. Next time you tell yourself you are too old to ride the Divide, look at these numbers—it’s pretty great to see that there are folks out pushing themselves at all ages.
We’d love to hear from you all about what statistics or variables stand out most to you or what you’d like to see next time. Let us know in the conversation below.

Year in Review: Andy’s Top Bike Rides of 2023
2023 was full of new discoveries. I scouted new tours, visited destinations for the first time, and sought ways to show DuVine travelers the best of the world by bike. But this year, the memories that stayed with me were often unexpected, like bridging cultures in South Africa or sipping a Coke in a Tennessee general store.
It got me thinking: I love riding my bike, but meeting people in my travels is just as gratifying. The power of human connection was everywhere I went—from hotel proprietors to selfless guides and my friends who cheered me up the tough climbs. So if you ask me my favorite discovery in 2023, it’s the very same thing I’m excited for in 2024: the new friendships that lead to new experiences, all waiting right down the road.
Tuscany, Italy | April
Each spring our guides gather for an annual pre-season training. This year the team was in Tuscany ’s Val d’Orcia, my favorite place to host new and returning guides. It’s really the best of Italy with serene landscapes, world-class food and wine, and the kindest locals. The family-run villas that host our growing group of guides are a great model of Italian hospitality.
This area’s charm is ideal not only for pre-season cycling, it also features prominently in our Tuscany bike tour itineraries . When I return to places like a familiar café on a tiny street in Montisi, it feels like coming home. Riding here in the spring marks a seasonal shift both physically and symbolically—the end of a restful winter and start of a re-energizing spring.
Blackberry Farm, Tennessee | May
Growing up in New England, the American south was uncharted territory for me. So in May, I took a long weekend to experience the southern hospitality at Blackberry Farm , a luxury resort in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
This property really understands service. Between the spa, on-property dining, and peaceful 4,000-acre setting, it’s hard to find a reason to leave. But I was there to see Appalachia by bike, and Blackberry Farm was the ideal starting point for daily rides into Tennessee’s quiet countryside and oak forests—a welcome change of pace. Roads were mellow and pleasant; we loved stopping at Mama Jean’s country store for an icy mid-ride Coca-Cola and homemade goodies.
Mallorca, Spain | June
Ahh, Mallorca . Arguably the cycling capital of Europe, this island is the total package, with traffic-free roads and views that make you say “are you kidding me?” at every mile. It’s also surprisingly easy to get here with direct flights from New York—and despite an uptick in popularity, Mallorca retains an air of mystery (especially when you head inland to tackle the mountains).
The ride that (literally) takes my breath away is the Cap de Formentor, a spicy 1.9 mile climb with 600 feet of elevation to reach the Formentor lighthouse. Thankfully, 360-degree ocean views distract from your burning quads and pumping heart. The descent is pure joy: a zigzag down the crispest road you’ve ever seen that spits you out right at Son Brull. Consider this my RSVP for another visit in 2024.
Corsica, France | July
If there’s one place I’d recommend to travelers in 2024, it’s Corsica . Fashionably jet-set but too cool to care, Corsica is still relatively unknown to Americans—maybe because it requires more effort to reach than other European beach destinations, or perhaps because the Côte d’Azure is the first place people imagine in the south of France.
But Corsica offers a more well-rounded experience, especially if you want something laid back: think pristine beaches, fresh seafood, and very few tourists. As for the riding, it felt like exploring the world’s best-kept secret. One memorable route was the Cap Corse to Calvi, a peninsular ride surrounded on every side by the Mediterranean. Don’t miss the Désert des Agriates, a wild and arid little pocket where we stopped for grilled fish and rosé right on the beach. C’est magnifique .
Dordogne + Bordeaux, France | September
I previewed our new-for-2024 Dordogne + Bordeaux Bike Tour , which moves through two distinct regions of Southwestern France . In Bordeaux , you ride vineyard roads in places like Saint-Émilion and look behind the scenes at how intrinsic the winemaking is to daily life and culture. By contrast, the Dordogne ‘s poetic approach to winemaking is informed by nature—cliffs, castles, caves, and rivers. Family-run châteaux produce elegant wines, but the attitude is more homespun and less serious.
I’m no stranger to Bordeaux’s many five-star hotels, but Château du Palanquey stands out. Owned and operated by a local couple, they understand the art of luxury and the importance of personal touches, with a wine program that’s hard to beat. Even if you’ve been to Bordeaux, it’s a wonderful place to visit again and again—especially when paired with the lesser-known Dordogne.
Loire Valley, France | October
One thing about the Loire Valley —it’s so French. Every visit is like a leap back in time that feels far away from the business of everyday life. The riding is DuVine’s easiest, a Level 1 , but I came to appreciate the unhurried tempo and ease with which you can hop off the bike to appreciate architecture and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
In my opinion, there’s no better home base than Les Sources de Cheverny . We stay at this eco-friendly 18th-century château and spa for our final night of the Loire Valley tour . It’s operated by friends of mine from Bordeaux ; they’ve nailed the essence of whimsical French country life with elegant yet comfortable accommodations plus top-notch food and wine that strikes the exact right tone.
South Africa | November
I couldn’t have dreamed a better way to close out the year than our South Africa Mountain Bike Tour —in one word, wow. I loved it all: the descent into Cape Town with views of Table Mountain from your airplane window, the soulful way townships welcomed us with open arms, the Chenin Blanc from Jordan Winery that rivaled any Old World wine, and the huge smile on my face as I found my MTB legs on epic single track trails.
Our exceptional local guides Arien , Kandice , and Jaco lead us up Chapman’s Peak on the final day of the tour. This ride is reason enough to visit—a coastal road carved out of the mountainside with views that made us all giddy—and the day comes to a stellar finish at Tintswalo Atlantic , a hotel that exceeded my expectations in every way.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Famed ‘Ride The Rockies’ bike event canceled due to low registration
Updated at 3:36 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2024
One of Colorado’s marquee cycling events has been canceled for 2024.
Ride The Rockies was scheduled for June and hoped to take more than 2,000 riders on a route in northwestern Colorado, but the long-running tour failed to attract enough interest from participants, the organizers announced on Thursday.
“After much consideration and evaluation of the limited registration, we regret that Ride The Rockies 2024 is canceled. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the towns, participants, sponsors, crew, volunteers, and supporters who have had a role in making this ride so special for the past 37 years,” a statement on the group’s website read.
The organization’s post left it unclear if the event will return. “We are assessing the best options for this beloved ride,” the organizers wrote.
Ride The Rockies is a tour, not a race. This year’s installment was scheduled to run from June 9 to 15, covering 400-plus miles and more than 23,000 feet of vertical gain.
Just days before the cancellation, Ride The Rockies was advertising this year’s merch, camping locations, and sponsors. The tour was to include stops in Steamboat Springs, Craig, Meeker, Rangely, and Fruita.
Ride The Rockies' now former tour director Sabra Nagel lost her job at about the same time the cancellation was announced. She said she is devastated.
"I feel bad for all the communities that have worked so hard to bring this event that I'm devastated for the financial impact some of these communities are going to see because their hotels have been booked full and now people are going to be canceling those reservations," Nagel said. "This doesn't just impact me. This impacts hundreds of other people that have worked very hard with me since October of last year to prepare."
Meeker locals and cycling fans alike were surprised and disappointed
Stephanie Hanson, executive director of the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, saw the news of the cancellation on Facebook — just hours after receiving an email from the event about planning.
“Well, at first I thought it was a joke,” she said.
But then got a call confirming the news.
Hanson made a point to say she wasn’t “angry or disgruntled,” and believes the organizers were as surprised as she was. She is disappointed, however.
While Ride the Rockies riders have zoomed through Meeker in years past, her community of just a few thousand people has never hosted an overnight stop. This year was going to be its chance.
“We're a small town, so saying 1,500 riders are staying overnight, that's huge for us because they come to our restaurants and our shops,” Hanson said. “And further you're introducing someone to a town that maybe they'll return to.”
All the town’s lodgings had already been booked up, months in advance. One saving grace is that this does give local merchants time to adjust, Hanson said, though the chamber is giving people who’d still like to keep their reservations $20 to spend at local establishments.
News of the cancellation drew a flood of social media posts. Some commenters complained the routes had grown too easy, too hard, or too boring. But a sense of shock and sadness was the most common response.
“The feeling of camaraderie while looking ahead and behind at the line of cyclists all laboring up Loveland or Independence Pass, and the feeling of accomplishment rolling into the last stop for the night, the nice hot shower in the shower truck, a hearty meal and then settling down in the tent for a good night’s rest,” one woman wrote of her experience.
In years past, the event was so popular that slots were awarded by lottery. That wasn’t the case this year.
“A classic Colorado gem gone by the wayside,” one commenter wrote.
History of Ride The Rockies
Ride The Rockies was founded by The Denver Post in 1986. The inaugural ride took more than 1,500 riders from Grand Junction to Denver.
In 2021, it was sold by the Denver Post Community Foundation to an organization called Ventures Endurance Events, which is a subsidiary of Gannett USA Today. A new tour director came aboard early in 2023. Ride The Rockies was previously canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic.
Refunds for this year’s ride will be paid automatically, the organizers said, and those who registered will still get a commemorative jersey.
Former director Nagel said the cancellation is a blow to Colorado.
"I think this ride means everything to the state. Over 80 percent of our riders were Colorado riders. It's got a legacy. I think the impacts to Colorado are far wider and far deeper than anybody can actually put their mind around," she said.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region
Table of contents:, history of the city, park of culture and leisure, historical and art museum, october cultural center, kristall ice palace, memorial complex, museum and exhibition complex.
2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06
In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.
Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.
The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.
Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".
You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.
Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.
Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.
The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.
One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.
Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.
One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.
There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.
In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.
There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.
Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968
But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.
It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.
In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.
Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.
Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports
N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.
Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.
Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.
Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .
The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.
Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.
The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .
Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.
One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.
Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."
The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .
Knewz.com reported previously:
“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.
The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].
One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”
The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.
Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.
Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.
Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .
Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.
The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
