Culture and customs.

Colombian culture tends to revolve around the Four F’s: Festivals, Food, Fun, and Family. While this bold and beautiful nation loves to party, it’s also a very traditional, family-centered society, with many Colombians choosing to live near their families and remain at home until marriage.

With most Colombians being Catholic, religion plays an important part in daily life, and visitors will be able to see this themselves while traveling through Colombia. Hundreds of churches and cathedrals populate the large cities, while smaller chapels are dotted throughout the villages and rural areas. Religious festivals like Easter and Christmas are celebrated with gusto – after quiet times of reverence come the massive street parties, parades, and feasts. A variety of cultural influences collide at these events - Spanish, African, and Caribbean customs and traditions have been brought to Colombia over the centuries and shaped its vibrant culture.

The hallmarks and customs of daily life vary from region to region, with Bogota’s upwardly mobile citizens enjoying bars, driving cars, and having access to a wide range of technology, cuisine, and media. Colombia’s rural dwellers (subsistence farmers, plantation workers, and tribal groups) live a more simple existence in rustic housing and without traffic or the stresses of modern life. What unifies most Colombians though, regardless of living conditions or class, is a fierce love of Colombia, respect for God, and loyalty to the family unit.

Geography and environment

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia shares borders with   Venezuela ,   Brazil ,   Peru ,   Ecuador ,   and Panama, and is the only South American country to have a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Home to a wide variety of natural environments and varying terrain, travelers can expect to see mountains give way to low-lying plains and tropical rainforests meet balmy beaches. Add sprawling metropolises, small farming communities, far-reaching plantations, fishing villages, and colonial-era towns, and you’ve got an ever-changing landscape at your fingertips.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Colombia has rich culinary traditions, quality fresh produce and loads of cosmopolitan bars, cafes, food stands and restaurants to visit. For a summary of what to eat in South America, check out   our in depth guide .

Things to try in Colombia

These popular thick corn tortillas can be found almost everywhere in Colombia. Baked or fried, with beef, cheese, pork, chicken or beans, they make the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack.

2. Bandeja Paisa

Originating from the Andean region of Colombia, this dish is a staple of most Colombian diets. Consisting of a plate of rice, beans, avocado, fried egg, chorizo and other meats, it’s a filling feast fit for a king!

3. Ajiaco Bogotano

This hearty chicken stew is a Bogota specialty. Packed with succulent chicken meat, corn, potatoes and herbs, it’s a tasty and satisfying budget meal.

4. Tropical fruit

Colombia is known for having some of the best fresh produce in the world. Bananas and plantains are among the best, and you’ll be able to find street vendors selling them fresh, fried and grilled. Fruit shakes are also widely available and offer travellers a chance to sample some exotic fruits that they may not have tried before.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Colombia was inhabited by Caribbean and Andean groups who lived in small communities based on organized agriculture. Spanish explorers were drawn to the land and fascinated by the proliferation of gold. The myth of El Dorado soon abounded, and the search for this land of gold soon became an obsession.

From the creation of Santa Marta in 1525, colonization spread rapidly throughout the rest of the country, leading to interest from neighboring countries that were also keen to exploit Colombia’s natural resources. Many Africans soon started to arrive as a part of the slave trade and provided a much-needed labor force for the colonizers. Life was tough for the slaves; however, African song, dance, and other afro-traditions helped to shape Colombian culture well into the future.

Recent history

Independence from Spain rose to the top of Colombia’s agenda after years of resentment. Simon Bolivar soon became a local hero, fighting for independence from the Spaniards. It took many years, but in 1819, Colombia was granted its freedom – Bolivar had fought his way into the minds and hearts of Colombia, where he is still revered.

However, this spirit of freedom was short-lived as Colombia descended into confrontation and civil war in the following years. Colombia seemed to be at the mercy of political opponents and guerrilla groups, weaving between periods of peace and extreme violence.

By the 1970s, Colombia had a new wave of criminal activity stemming from the lucrative cocaine trade. Pablo Escobar became one of the world’s most notorious (and wealthy) criminals by controlling most of the world’s drug trade. Colombia became a dangerous place to live (and travel in) during this period, yet has recently emerged victorious from these dark days. With vastly improved national security and a growing economy based on agriculture, textiles, and mineral mining, Colombia is welcoming back tourists with open arms.

Travelers might visit Colombia for the adrenaline sports, nature reserves, and beaches, however, retail therapy should also be included in that list, as Colombia’s shopping is surprisingly sensational.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States generally has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Colombia

1. Jewelry, art and handicrafts

Some of the best artisans in South America live in Colombia. Choose from handcrafted gold jewelry, bright textile bags and scarves, and vibrant contemporary art available in galleries, markets, and boutiques all over the country.

2. Fashion and accessories

Colombia’s more cosmopolitan cities have enough fashion-forward boutiques and malls to keep most clothes-hounds happy. Medellin in particular is well known for being Colombia’s fashion capital and is a true hotspot in the Latin American fashion world.

3. Coffee beans

As one of the world’s largest producers of coffee beans, Colombia is a great place to pick up top-quality beans at lower prices than back home. Buying straight from the coffee regions ensures quality and freshness.

Top 10 must-see cities of Colombia

1. medellin.

What makes Medellin so magnificent? Once considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Medellin’s temperate weather, hospitable locals, gorgeous gardens, and artistic enclaves have prevailed and this cultured city has emerged full of spirit, passion and optimism.

Explore Medellin on our 9 day Cafe Colombia tour.

This vibrant town may have been founded centuries ago, but nowadays Popayan has a youthful spirit due to the local university that attracts thousands of young Colombians to the region. Home to many of Colombia’s most celebrated poets, composers, and painters, Popayan also has some of the most stirring Easter celebrations in the world.

Known locally as the ‘Capital of Heaven’, Cali’s museums and public art may dazzle you, but it’s the up-and-coming food and party scene that’s getting loads of attention. With modern restaurants serving international cuisine, local eateries offering traditional fare, lively salsa bars open until dawn, and a fair worth traveling for in late December, Cali shouldn’t be missed!

4. Barichara

Less of a city and more of a colonial town, the faded charm of rustic Barichara has been endearing travelers for centuries. Colored, whitewashed buildings with carved wooden doors and red roofs, quaint little churches, and hilly streets make Barichara the perfect place to linger for a few days of quiet downtime.

Embrace the charm of Baricahra on our 10 day Explore Colombia adventure.

Colombia’s sprawling capital is a frenetic fusion of old and new, with skyscrapers towering over colonial buildings, wild traffic giving way to peaceful parks, and cobblestone streets leading to bohemian night spots. With so much going on, you’ll be exhausted trying keep up with Bogota’s pace.

Experience Bogota on our 17 day Best of Colombia tour.

Lofty Tunja’s historic architecture, spiritual sites, and lively festivals make it an interesting destination for travelers from all walks of life. Whether you’re interested in magnificent art, colonial-era architecture, or cultural enlightenment, Tunja delivers on all accounts.

7. Cartagena

Surrounded by walls built to guard against pirates, Cartagena captivates travelers with colonial mansions, cobbled streets, Spanish-style houses, and brightly colored buildings. History seems to drip from every street corner, especially when Cartagena takes on a golden glow by night.

Admire Cartagena on our 12 day Real Colombia tour.

8. Pamplona

Although one of Colombia’s less-visited spots, cultured Pamplona is well worth checking out. With a wealth of museums, galleries, and churches nestled within its narrow streets and rousing Holy Week celebrations, Pamplona offers a peak into Colombian traditions and daily life.

9. Santa Marta

Seaside Santa Marta attracts flocks of tourists chasing sunshine, scuba diving, and seafood. With beautiful beaches, atmospheric bars, chilled-out open-air cafes, and heritage sites, Santa Marta should feature on every travelers list.

10. San Gil

This small city is emerging as one of Colombia’s hottest new destinations, mainly due to the plethora of adventure sports on offer in the surrounding areas. Test your limits with paragliding, caving, rafting, and kayaking, and then relax in the pleasant botanical gardens and cafes of sunny San Gil.

Festivals and events in Colombia

Barranquilla carnival.

Held in the lead up to Ash Wednesday each year, this spectacular collision of color, flashy costumes, lively dancing, and rhythmic Caribbean, Latin, and African beats draws more than one million revelers from around the world.

Medellin Feria de las Flores (Festival of the Flower)

Occurring each August, this week-long ode to local flower farmers (Colombia is one of the leading producers of cut flowers in the world) culminates in a colorful and fragrant parade, where farmers march the streets carrying silletas (elaborate flower arrangements) on their back.

Feria de Cali (Cali Fair)

The salsa capital of Colombia ends each year the only way it knows how – with a five-day city-wide party beginning right after Christmas featuring parades, music, bullfighting, a beauty pageant, food, and of course, salsa dancing.

Pasto Carnaval de Negros y Blancos (Black and White Carnival)

Each January, the city of Pasto engages in an unusual two-day celebration of racial equality – locals and visitors party on the street and paint each other black for Blacks’ Day and throw white powder on each other for Whites’ Day.

Night of the Candles

Homes and cities across the country are lit up with candles and paper lanterns to mark the unofficial start of the Christmas season. Taking place on the eve of the Immaculate Conception (a Catholic celebration and national holiday in Colombia), it’s a night meant for socializing with friends and family.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

There is always a good time to visit Colombia, as the seasons vary throughout the country. While the climate generally remains constant throughout the year, the temperature can change depending on where you are. In the far north, the climate is usually tropical, warm and humid, while central Colombia can get quite cool - Bogota is known for its mild temperatures, particularly at night.

The wet season is roughly from March to May and September to November, although this varies around the country. December to March is the peak travel period due to the dry conditions and holidays and festivals that proliferate across the country. During this time, expect more sunshine, but also more people competing for space in the cities and tourist regions.

Do I need a visa to visit Colombia?

Visitors from over 102 countries can enter Colombia without requiring a visa for a maximum of 90 days for tourist purposes. These countries include the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Travelers not from a visa-exempt country can apply for a tourist visa online or at the nearest Colombian embassy or consulate.

However, this is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Colombia?

Many Colombians receive low wages and leaving a 10% tip at mid-range and Western-style restaurants is customary and appreciated. Some restaurants automatically add a gratuity to the bill, in which case, there is no need to add any more. Tipping is not expected at more casual restaurants and cafes.

uncover colombia really covers colombia

My wife and I had been interested in visiting Colombia largely because my father worked in Barranquilla in the early to mid-1960s and I had not been back since then. I found Uncover Colombia online and entered into email conversations with Nidia Penagos about designing a trip. The result was an exceptional experience... – John, January 2020

colombia excels

Uncover Colombia is the best travel agency we have ever used, and we have traveled to many different countries and used many different agencies... The standout person was Nidia. She organized our trip to Colombia perfectly. We asked for different things to be done in our 11 days in Colombia. She included every place using aeroplanes and cars as modes of transportation. – Marla, January 2020

great colombia private tour company

I can highly recommend Uncover Colombia. I used the company for a week-long solo trip to Colombia spanning three cities: Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena. They did a wonderful job for me, providing English-speaking guides in each of the cities and arranging transportation to various sites and internal flights from city to city... – Will, December 2019

exploring around colombia

Guides were excellent and spoke good English which helped as my Spanish is, shall we say, developing! The places for accommodation were also good, but ask if you would prefer smaller hotels as the company are very flexible. We had good communication with the local representative from Uncover Colombia while we were in the country, and very quick, helpful responses while planning from England. – John, April 2018

My husband and I recently visited Colombia for 28 days. The whole trip was organized by Uncover Colombia and they did a great job. This was a customized trip for just the 2 of us. exceptional colombia travel agent

My wife and I wanted to visit Colombia. We travel independently or with an agent who only deals with one country. Colombia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Guatape, located on the shores of the Embalse Guatape

The only country in South America to enjoy Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, Colombia ranks high in the list of the hottest travel destinations in the world. For a long time, Colombia wasn’t safe for tourists, and this means that travel is quite new to the country. As a result, you can still come across sights and attractions that are relatively unexplored and haven’t been splashed all over the internet.

The vast terrain of Colombia presents all kinds of outdoor explorations that range from diving, rafting, climbing and trekking. San Gil is famous as the adventure capital of the country, and Ciudad Perdida is where you get to enjoy inspired jungle walks. Other things to do during a trip to Colombia include hiking, scuba diving and whale watching.

Tour Highlights

  • Take a mud bath at El Totumo Volcano
  • Explore the Lost City of Teyuna
  • Climb to the very top of the El Peñón inselberg
  • Visit the underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá
  • Cross the bridge at Las Lajas Sanctuary in Narino
  • Swim in the lagoons of Tayrona National Natural Park
  • See the annual Monarch butterfly migration

Travel Tips

  • 'Tranquilo' is the Colombian way of life. Everything and everybody is relaxed, and nothing is rushed. Whether you're lost, late, or panicking, locals will almost always respond with a simple 'tranquilo'.
  • Bring your toiletries with you when on a holiday in Colombia. Even something as simple as hair conditioner can be hard to come by in this country. When you do find them, they are often expensive and not of the quality you are used to.
  • Tips are usually included in your bill already. If you want to be sure, look for a line that says 'propina' on your receipt.
  • Be prepared to pay for 'luxuries' like soap and toilet paper when using public toilets.
  • Colombia has a historically bad reputation for drugs and gang violence. However, the country is very safe to visit. Take all the safety precautions you would normally take in any country and you will not experience any problems.

Colombia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Colombia before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Colombia, do check out our Colombia Travel Guide for more information.

Colombia Tours & Travel Guide

Colombia Attractions & Landmarks Guide

A country that has undergone tremendous change over the past few decades, Colombia has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. From idyllic beaches to beautiful cobblestone streets, fun shops and restaurants in Cartagena's old town, to the spectacular views and hiking trails in Medellin, to tasting local coffee in Bogota, there's something for everyone.

Why Visit Colombia on Guided Tour?

When visiting Colombia, independent exploration is a definite option. On the other hand, finding a guided tour is highly advised in order to get the fullest experience of Colombia. While many guided tours in Colombia need to be booked in advance, it is also possible to arrange them when in the country. However, this is likely to increase travel costs and the chance of certain tours being unavailable when travelers wish to book them.

For the vast majority of Colombia tours, guides will be city locals or Colombian natives. This is important, as they will likely already have contacts that they frequently use when planning activities for the group and will know which attractions travelers tend to frequent. Similarly, Colombia tour guides can offer personal advice on where to best spend time during free days and recommend specific places to stay or eat based on pricing and local reputation.

If travelers to Colombia are worried that their guide will not speak their specific language, it is possible to arrange for one that does. However, this factor depends on the Colombia tour operator , as some may not employ guides fluent in certain languages. Therefore, travelers are urged to verify the guides’ languages with the specific Colombia tour operator as far in advance as possible. As a further precautionary measure, travelers to Colombia can invest in a phrasebook. Not only does this help Colombia tour participants connect with other international travelers, but it also allows them to effectively communicate with their tour guide.

Since Colombia guided tours are usually with groups, depending on the size of the party that travelers are with, they are great opportunities to meet other travelers. This allows for future tours together, the exchange of travel information, and a cultural immersion that may not be found as easily in solo explorations.

By working with guided tours in Colombia, travelers set themselves up with the best chance to fully enjoy all that each city and location has to offer. First-hand knowledge of the country along with the long-time travel experience that comes with a Colombia tour guide are invaluable to travelers, as they minimize costs, travel time, and the possibility of missing out on something important!

What to Expect When Visiting Colombia

When traveling to Colombia for extended periods of time, a budget may be necessary to plan. Tours of Colombia that include hotel rooms, food, and activities are certainly available to book, but there are also many other ways to travel economically.

As the food is relatively inexpensive in Colombia, travelers who are not opposed to cooking for themselves may opt to stay at the many lodgings with kitchens available for use. Places to stay in Colombia also have the option for travelers to pay for breakfast in the morning, should they not choose to eat out for every meal.

On a similar note, tipping is not expected or is very minimal when going to places to eat in Colombia. Depending on location, groceries and meals can be sufficiently purchased even with a minimal budget. Within larger cities that have a high density of citizens and international travelers, the prices of commodities tend to be at their cheapest. The opposite rule applies to cities further away from urban centers, such as those along the Amazon or in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains.

For the most part, it appears that Colombia’s attitude towards travelers is a friendly one. Provided that travelers to Colombia are respectful of the fragile environmental landscapes that they explore, it appears most Colombians are willing to help travelers enjoy their country in the same way that they do. Since tourism is a growing sector of Colombia’s economy, travelers may not experience the same standards of “premium” or “value” accommodations that they are used to. This is especially true when it comes to highly-rated places to stay in Colombia, as there are a number of them, but given their high demand, they may be full if travelers do not book their stays in advance.

Colombia Cities

As one of the world’s highest-altitude capitals, Bogotá is an iconic Colombian city that demonstrates a successful integration of green-space within urban architecture. Not only are the colonial roots of the city still present, but also the ways the city has modernized so as to embrace an influx of international travelers.

Travelers who are looking for the best things to see in Bogotá might want to begin with a trip up Monserrate Mountain, found at the center of the capital. A 3+ hour hike or a 1.5-hour cable-car ride brings travelers to the summit, where the Sanctuary of Monserrate still stands after 400 years along with breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

El Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) is a popular landmark to tour with a guide or in a solo venture, as it has more than 50,000 pieces for visitors to view.

The Museo Botero is another frequented locale for travelers in Bogotá to stop at, as it showcases works of both international and local artists.  This museum is also free for travelers and Colombian citizens alike, allowing for a dispersion of art and culture that is not always found in other cities.

For travelers looking to discover Bogotá’s culinary endeavors, the Paloquemao food market is where vendors congregate to showcase their produce, which can also be found in meals at the many restaurant stalls that share the space.

2. Cartagena

As a port city that has been used for centuries, Cartagena is a Colombian city along the Caribbean coastline. Its historic “Old Town,” a maze of colonial-era walls, fortresses, and tunnels, is both a UNESCO Heritage Site and frequent destination for travelers. At the Palace of Inquisition, travelers to Cartagena can not only view intricate colonial-era architecture but also curious religious items on display from that time period.

In a more modern comparison, the Bocagrande neighborhood consists of skyscrapers and restaurants, which travelers often visit for lodging and to partake in the night-life. Its location being directly on the beach allows solo travelers or groups to relax there without having to plan a tour, as access is free to all. However, should travelers desire adventure beyond the city limits, visiting the islands of Barú and Rosario are only possible with guided tours.

The Isla del Barú is a tranquil island with white-sand beaches far from the congested ones found in the city. In comparison, Isla del Rosario may appeal to active travelers, who can scuba dive along the third largest coral reef in the world.

3. Medellin

While viewed historically as a dangerous city, Medellin has made great strides in providing travelers with both safe and entertaining ways to explore the city. By taking one of the many “free walking tours” that are offered in the plazas and parks, travelers can gain an understanding of the surrounding museums, markets, and landmarks within the city.

Soccer fans, or even just those interested in seeing intense team spirit, can watch a Categoría Primera A football game at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium. Travelers interested in art can tour the Museo de Antioquia, which has both international and Colombian exhibits.

The Cementerio Museo de San Pedro, while more macabre, is just as educational for international travelers in Medellin. As the final resting place for many of Colombia’s important historical figures, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the country’s past and those who helped shape it.

For adventurous travelers looking for art in a more informal manner, it can be found on the buildings in Comuna 13. While previously known as one of the most dangerous parts of Medellin, Comuna 13 now boasts local organizations that sponsor neighborhood outreach and countless street art installations. Guided tours to the neighborhood can be arranged, but solo ventures are also possible with local knowledge of the specific areas to see.

The Capital, Bogotá

Bogotá is Colombia’s capital, and a classic stop for Colombia tours. With many cultural and historical sites, museums, art galleries, cafes (for some famous Colombian coffee), and restaurants, you’ll get a real sense for what makes Colombia a unique and special country.

Some main attractions in Bogotá that you shouldn’t miss include:

1. The Gold Museum  - Colombia has a long history when it comes to this most precious commodity. The Gold Museum was founded in 1939 as a way to preserve pre-Hispanic gold works. Gold is not the only material featured - the museum also houses artifacts and pieces made from semi-precious stones, textiles, rock, and pottery. It’s an essential stop on any Bogotá visit.

2. Take a cycling tour - Bogotá is a very walkable and cycle-able city, with boardwalks and parks. Cycling is a very popular way to take in the sights and sounds. There are many day tour options, or if you’re on a multi-day tour through Colombia, an afternoon of cycling in Bogotá is a commonly offered activity on the itinerary.

3. Take in the views from Monseratte Mountain - Don’t worry. If you’re not in the mood to take a several hour hike (ill-advised for safety reasons), the gorgeous panoramic views from the top of Monseratte are easy to get to by cable car. At the top be sure to give yourself enough time for plenty of pictures, and to observe the ‘El Señor Caido’ statue.

Traveling in the Colombian countryside

Traveling through the Colombian countryside provides travelers with the opportunity to come face to face with the vibrant native plants and animals that call the country home. With landscapes that range from the inviting Caribbean coast to the snow-capped Andes Mountains which are preceded by Los Llanos grasslands, travel in Colombia can cross many geographical boundaries.

Colombia’s immense swath of the Amazon Rainforest is about a third of the country and nearly impossible to pass through. Travelers in Colombia can arrange for guided tours through the Amazon that access the rainforest and its river, but solo or group travel is highly inadvisable without first-hand knowledge of the paths and specific times to venture out.

Guided tours through the Amazon typically rely on boats and footpaths to reach their destinations, a factor which leads to limited accessibility for certain travelers in Colombia. If travelers are looking to access the various towns along the Caribbean coast, these same aforementioned methods of travel are the only ones currently available.

However, for travelers with a larger budget and a desire to explore Colombian cities, air travel is an efficient option. Flights between Bogotá, Cartagena, Cali, and Medellin happen multiple times per day and do not always have to be booked in advance. If booking online, travelers looking for flights in Colombia should consider using a private browsing tab when booking.

This avoids the international charges which many online airfare companies tack on for international travelers and can make a significant difference in pricing. For those traveling on a budget in Colombia , buses are available so long as travelers do not mind the lengthy travel times.

Roadways through the more remote, mountainous regions of Colombia are notoriously long and windy. Even still, as a relatively inexpensive way to get between the major cities of Colombia, the roadway system in cities is of fair quality and worth utilizing should travelers find it necessary.

Coffee tours in Colombia

Colombia, known for its sprawling landscapes and fertile land, is the third largest producer of coffee in the world. Therefore, regardless of a traveler’s affinity for coffee, taking one of the many coffee tours in Colombia is highly recommended. Quindío , the region where the coffee bean flourishes, is split by the Andes Mountains and dotted with plantations near the fields.

As an activity offered by many guided tours in Colombia, understanding the process of sustainable coffee production is important both internationally and locally. Therefore, travelers who engage in one of these excursions will be able to tour detailed museums and witness the step-by-step process that goes into providing the coffee Colombia is so well-known for. Of course, international travelers will also be able to taste the many different roasts and flavors that each plantation is known for their reinvention of.

Some of the more famous coffee plantations that travelers come across on coffee tours in Colombia include:

  • Café San Alberto -  Situated along the picturesque slopes that overlook the flatlands of the  Quindío  coffee region, participants in the Café San Alberto coffee tour are able to enjoy their caffeine while basking in the panoramic views afforded from the altitude.
  • La Victoria -  For a more historical perspective, La Victoria  coffee plantation tours delve into the history of coffee, the antique machinery it uses being a living testament. Founded in 1892, the plantation is self-sustaining and harnesses the power of nearby Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain rivers to power its machines. While less about the coffee plant itself, this tour affords travelers a unique glimpse into the past (along with samples)
  • Parque Nacional de Cafe -  In a fun twist on typical coffee tours in Colombia, travelers may want to visit Parque Nacional de Cafe, a theme park based around the bean. Boasting a coffee museum along with 27 rides in the theme park, this activity is a great option for travelers in groups or ones who want adrenaline to go along with their caffeine.

Typical Accommodation Style in Colombia

Depending on the remoteness of a location, accommodations in Colombia range from campsites to luxurious hotel rooms. Within major cities of Bogotá, Medellin, or Cartagena, travelers have access to 4-star hotels from chains such as the Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, and Hyatt Regency. Of course, international travelers can opt to stay in hotels owned by local Colombian companies, many of which boast the same standards of cleanliness, entertainment, and spa availability.

When looking for accommodations in Colombia of this economic caliber, booking in advance is very useful for saving money and ensuring that space is available at specific locations. Certain hotels may offer discounted guided tours or suggestions on how to spend time in a city, which is invaluable information for travelers looking to make the most of their stay in Colombia.

Similarly, booking ahead with hotels in Colombia enables travelers to plan other excursions or guided tours within the surrounding area, as they have a definite place to stay at night. Choosing to stay at hotels in Colombia is also useful when it comes to dining since many offer food all day and provide free breakfast for those looking to eat before early tours or activities.

For travelers looking for frugal ways to stay in Colombia, the length of stay is an important consideration. Hostels are ways to maintain a flexible schedule, as they do not usually require booking ahead of time and are prolific in cities.

Similarly, while hostels in Colombia are cheap to rent alone, traveling in a group and being willing to share the price of a room significantly lowers individual costs. Depending on the hostel, breakfast and/or other meals are sometimes provided, also helping to limit overall travel costs.

Food in Colombia

Colombian cuisine may not exactly be something to write home about - unless you really hunt around. Another fantastic reason to visit on a tour! In Cartagena you’ll find a lot of European restaurants, particularly in Old Town - and while the food is delicious, you feel that you could be in any European city.

Elsewhere in Colombia you’ll find many rice and bean based dishes, with Spanish and Mexican influences, as well as some more eclectic offerings with Arab and African influences. Colombian food tends to be heavy and many popular dishes include meat - most commonly chicken - like much of traditional South American cuisine.

Like most countries, Colombian food and drink is very regional, with certain areas having access to different ingredients and utilizing different cooking techniques.

Some Colombian foods you absolutely must try:

1. Ajiaco - A heavy, potato based dish, Ajiaco is a favorite soup around the country, but perhaps most popular in Bogota. Soups are very popular in Colombia, an odd choice perhaps for a country with a temperate climate that rarely fluctuates. Soups in Colombia are almost always served with avocado, are chock full of seasonal ingredients and flavorful broths.

2. Empanadas - This classic South American treat is the perfect street food snack to munch on while taking in the sights. Every country seems to have their own spin. In Colombia you’ll find their fried with potato and beef filling - sometimes sweet versions are also found in bakeries!

3. Lechona Tolimense - Many Colombian dishes are quite substantial - designed to feed big groups, and Lechona Tolimense is no exception! Hailing from to Tolima region near Bogota, this dish is comprised of a stuffed pork, that then cooks for ten to twelve hours. Often made for special occasions.

4. Arepas - A delicious side dish, served with almost every meal - or as a stand alone market food, Arepas are fried or baked dough usually filled or topped with some cheesy goodness. You can also have it with condensed milk for a slightly sweeter rendition.

Colombia Lost City Trekking

There are a choice few well known “lost cities” in the world - top places on travelers bucket lists: Machu Picchu in Peru, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Tikal in Guatemala, and smattering of others. These places are incredible and well worth discovering.

However because of their popularity, they are also often crowded and, let’s face it, accessible - so even though you are visiting an archaeological treasure surrounded by jungle it doesn’t feel remote.

If you’re after a Lost City experience that harkens back to what the above sites may have felt like to the first explorers and travelers, Colombia has just the place: “ Ciudad Perdida ”. Literally translated as “Lost City” this hidden archaeological site has just begun to be visited by tourists.

The city pre-dates Machu Picchu by roughly 600 years, and though it may not be quite as picturesque, the experience of getting there, the incredible stillness of the surrounding jungle, and the ancient history surrounding the city ruins will push any thought of Machu Picchu splendor out of your mind.

The trek is intense - expect a lot of off roading, a lot of mud, a lot of water, and high humidity. But for an adventure that few tourists are attempting - though they will within the next 20 years, go now and see it without the crowds.

Top Destinations in Colombia for Nature Lovers

As a country renowned for its vast rainforests, access to the Amazon River , and inviting beaches, Colombia offers many ways for travelers to interact with its biodiversity. Depending on what level of activity travelers are interested in, tours in Colombia range from rowing in a transparent kayak, hiking with a group, or exploring trails via horseback, all of which provide a rewarding travel experience.

Although Bogotá is the nation’s capital city, it has no shortage of eco-travel options for visitors. As a central location for many travelers to Colombia, there are a number of tours that leave on single or multi-day excursions from the city which can be booked in advance.

From the city itself, many travelers use a cable car to ascend the famous Monserrate Mountain (and see the 400-year old sanctuary that crowns it).  Otherwise, the 3+ hour hike along switchback trails is also available for travelers in Colombia should they not wish to hire a horse. Similarly, Lake Guatavitá is a picturesque travel destination for those staying in the capital, as it is possible to visit (weather permitting) within one day.

By arranging for a ride an hour south of the capital, travelers to Colombia can visit Chicaque Park . Public transportation is available to enter this cloud-forest reserve, which is home to miles of hiking trails , a 98-foot zip-line, and a rich variety of birds. Travelers may also see sloths in the trees along the trails or larger animals should they choose to ascend a platform that rests on a 200-year-old tree. Visitors looking to be frugal may camp out, but the option to stay in unique tree-houses are available as well.

For those wishing to escape the city altogether, tours are available in El Chocó , along Colombia’s Pacific coast. As a mixture of rainforest and shoreline, the area provides the perfect opportunity for travelers to spot whales or see some of Colombia’s countless species of birds . The time between June and October is considered the best for whale-watching, while February-July is when the famous Leatherback sea-turtles appear to lay their eggs on the shore. Poison arrow frogs are abundant along the hiking trails of these Colombian jungle tours and the more fortunate travelers may even spot a jaguar.

Along the Amazon River , travelers to Colombia may choose to stay in Leticia, a town with many of the same amenities, restaurants, and entertainment as are found in less rural locations. However, the opportunity to see lemurs, birds, and Pink River dolphins up-close are unique to these types of jungle-cities and provide amazingly personal experiences with the surrounding wildlife.

Colombia Amazon Tours

Colombia posses the northwest corner of South America and the Amazon, and this portion of jungle makes up nearly ⅓ of the country. With the  Amazon  forming such a large physical and cultural part of the country, it makes sense that any trip to Colombia should include at least a taste of the world’s largest rainforest.

Here are some of the best towns to visit in the Colombian Amazon:

Leticia can be found at Colombia’s most southern point, and is the most developed and well known of the country’s Amazonian town. Residents of this town still live a relatively traditional lifestyle, and primarily depend on agriculture and tourism to make a living. Another interesting component of Leticia is that it is one of the main aquarium fish trading posts in the world -- hundreds of Amazonian species are raised or captured in this town, and then shipped to Bogota, where they are distributed worldwide.

If you are going on an eco-tour, or plan to  immerse yourself in the local community  by experiencing traditional jungle life with one of the remote indigenous tribes of Colombia, Leticia will likely be your home base.

This town is located in Vaupes, a region of Amazonia that is one of the premiere birding destinations in the world. The town is incredibly isolated and definitely far off of the beaten path -- tourist infrastructure was never built due to the fact that the town used to be a base for the FARC (An anti-government guerilla movement).

Many Colombians consider this to be “real jungle,” unlike even Leticia. There are very few tourists in this region, and and because of the lack of development for tourism it is highly recommended you take a guided tour of the region. One major highlight include the Cerros de Mavecure (Mavecure Hills), which are an incredible destination for  hiking , and a great place to go camping overnight.

Puerto Nariño.

This small town is only 75km away from much more known Leticia, and is known for its dark, nutrient-rich waters and abundant wildlife. One its main attractions is the church by the town’s own Santander Park, where parrots flock to each night to sleep. By paying a small donation, the nearby church will allow you to climb its steeple and watch both sunset, and the parrots as they come home.

Puerto Nariño is also a great place to learn more about Colombia’s indigenous communities. 95% of the town’s population is indigenous, and the entire town practices a more customary way of life -- there isn’t even a single car in the town!

Like the town Mitu, Guaviare is another very off-the-grid travel location, and this is because of the town’s history with political conflict. However, things are safe for the mindful traveler, and Guaviare boasts dozens of fascinating sights and wonders. For those interested in  nature and wildlife , Guaviare is one of the few locations on earth that experiences a healthy red algae bloom in its rivers and lakes. This turns the water a startling pink for half of the year, and is an incredible sight to behold.

Even if you look just in the surroundings of the town, you are sure to find a wide range of flora and fauna. Peering into the water, you may see pink dolphins and caiman, and quick glance into the tree tops will reveal monkeys, toucans, and parrots... life is everywhere in Guaviare.

If you are interested in a  historical tour of Colombia , or, rather, a prehistorical tour, Guaviare is also home to several caves filled with beautiful, 10,000-year-old cave drawings.

Word is slowly getting out about the world’s ‘mega-diverse’ South American nation that has had to bear the brunt of a peerless and difficult history. Colombia, while still mistakenly associated and even sometimes referred to as a country full of crime and violence, has begun its resurgence on the travel radar. At the same time, Colombia has managed to reinvent itself as one of the most intriguing countries in the world. A place teeming with dynamic cities, unrivalled biodiversity along with a dizzying number of sights and points of interest which means the secret is truly out as foreign visitors no longer flock by the thousands but rather the millions now. The only risk here is the risk of wanting to stay – in which case we can also help you!

With that said, you can likely see why our mission is to introduce you to all aspects of Colombia, both relatively known ones as well as those that are yet to be discovered or not yet published in Lonely Planet.

Colombia Tour Operator | Colombia Tour Guides | Colombia Locals

After arriving in the Capital of Bogota just days prior, a French woman decided to take her bike along the city streets where the unexpected happened and a flat tire left her adrift in an unknown corner of the city. “A man appeared from nowhere and, smiling to me he said he would fix my bike. When I told him I had no money to pay him, he told me he didn’t want my money, just my friendship.” This gesture changed her life and now calls Colombia home.

A country where over 50 million people call home, a country which enjoys the appellation “second happiest country in the world,” a country that can be characterized by one word – Resilient. Its people, its communities, its institutions, its businesses have worked so hard to disabuse past stereotypes and announce this Latin American country’s true strengths. With over 87 different indigenous groups and dialects located all over the nation, you can see how it’s a real salsa dance of demographics making it one of the most ethnically diverse countries not only in the Western Hemisphere but the world. There is no one way to characterize Colombians or put them in a particular box. What you can say with certainty though is that there is a warmth that is unparalleled and a particular feeling when you are here that leaves you feeling as though the country wears its heart on its sleeve. With that, no matter the divergence of its citizens, Colombians also share a unified pride and grit filling their souls with optimism, positivity and infinite hope.

Our team at ColombiaTT is an exuberant group of locals and enthusiasts who not only know the country, they live it, and breathe it. With such an array of terrain and cultural diversity Colombia offers we can assure you that we have a resident who is an expert in all corners of the country. Sharing not only the landscapes and adventurous activities available to partake in but also allowing you to revel in a bit of that Paisa pride that bolts out of every smile you encounter in the city or in the depths of the jungle.

Fantastic tour and a great way to see some of the highlights of Colombia in an express way. Our tour guide Marco was amazing, always going out of his way to ensure everything ran smoothly and was very knowledgeable and passionate about Colombia. Would definitely recommend this tour! The accommodation was surprisingly better than most tours I've ever even been on, always in great locations, spacious and very comfortable.

This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.

Caribbean Colombia Express Tour

The trip was good. I enjoyed Minca, Tayrona National Park, Villa Margareta and Cartagena city tour. Freddy was a great guide - friendly, helpful and attentive. His way of sharing information about Colombia and the places we went was very good. I found the hotels not good at times and there was a lot of time wihout any activities which made me doubtful about the financial value of the trip. It was not cheap and I felt that I could have done more on my own for less money, expect perhaps visiting Minca. That was unique.

This tour was a wonderful experience. I particularly enjoyed the coffee farm and the Cocora Valley tour. Medellin was fascinating. There was a good mix of structured and unstructured time. Our guide, Franklin, was resourceful, knowledgeable, and charming. The group itself had a broad mix ages and nationalities. I would go again in a heartbeat.

An once-in-a-lifetime custom trip for my group of friends. This was not a bullet point tour of Colombia but rather a deeply rich, well thought out tour of amazing places that we could not have found on our own. Every guided and person we met on the tour was amazing, thanks to Dan and Mateo's knack for finding the best of the best. Already planning our next tour with Go Wild. Thanks so much for everything~

JP, the guide, was not only knowledgeable and entertaining but most importantly he went out of his way to ensure we had multiple options during the trip s significant amount of free time. As a result, people really bonded and we travelers became very good friends. Like the size of the group , 16, and the age range 24 to 64.

Vice President Kamala   Harris Launches Nationwide Economic Opportunity   Tour

The Vice President will kick off her multi-state tour with a moderated conversation in Atlanta, GA on April 29 and an event in Detroit, MI during the following week

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris announced today that she will embark on a nationwide Economic Opportunity Tour with a series of events focused on investing in communities, building wealth, and ensuring every American has the freedom to thrive. The Vice President’s tour will take her back to several states across the country as she highlights how the Biden-Harris Administration has built economic opportunity and delivered for the American people. The Economic Opportunity Tour will kick off with a moderated conversation in Atlanta, GA on April 29 and an event in Detroit, MI during the following week. Additional dates and locations will be announced soon.

“President Biden and I are committed to creating an economy in which every person has the freedom to thrive. That is why we have taken historic steps to advance economic opportunity by increasing access to capital, investing in small businesses, addressing housing costs, forgiving student loans and medical debt, investing in infrastructure, and championing additional policies that put money in people’s pockets and build wealth,” said Vice President Harris.   “Our economic approach has delivered great progress, and we will continue to invest in you, your family, and your future.”

During the Vice President’s Economic Opportunity Tour, she will highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration has delivered historic investments that have supported communities and helped people thrive. This includes making unprecedented investments in small businesses and achieving the fastest creation of Black-owned small businesses in more than 30 years, creating a record number of jobs, increasing access to capital for underserved communities, investing in infrastructure, cutting the price of insulin and expanding access to health care, erasing medical debt, forgiving more student loan debt than any administration in history and boosting investments in education, making housing more affordable, lowering child care costs, and increasing the wealth of American families. Vice President Harris will also outline additional steps that she and President Biden are taking to expand this work. She will be joined on the tour by Administration officials, members of Congress, local leaders, and other special guests.

The Vice President’s tour is a continuation of her nonstop travel to communities across the country. She has made more than 35 trips to 16 states since the beginning of 2024. This includes consistent travel to meet with small business owners and entrepreneurs in underserved communities to discuss challenges and opportunities they face. In March, she traveled to Black Wall Street in Durham, NC to announce $32 million in funds to support historically underserved entrepreneurs. She began the year in Las Vegas, NV where she announced an SBA rule that will ensure millions of Americans who have served time are eligible for SBA loan programs that help individuals start and run small businesses.

The Vice President has long been focused on ensuring that minority, rural, and low-income communities have the capital and resources they need to thrive and support small businesses. Last year, she announced that Treasury’s CDFI Fund has awarded over $1.73 billion in grants to 603 Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) across the country. In 2022, the Vice President also announced a first-of-its-kind public-private sector initiative — the Economic Opportunity Coalition (EOC) — that is a historic public-private partnership of more than 20 private sector organizations that will invest tens of billions of dollars to create opportunity and grow wealth in historically underserved communities. The EOC has already surpassed over $1 billion in increased member company deposits into community finance institutions. As a Senator, the Vice President partnered with key Congressional stakeholders to secure a transformative $12 billion investment for CDFIs and MDIs in December 2020. Since that time, she has worked to ensure these programs are as successful as possible.

Additional dates, cities, and details for media to RSVP will be available soon.

Bucket list travel on a budget: Expert tips for airfare, loyalty programs, credit card perks and more

Nicky Kelvin from The Points Guy dives into ways to save this summer.

Many travelers have their sights set on summer getaways , but with everything from baggage fees to fuel costs impacting the price of a ticket, "Good Morning America" is asking travel experts to share tips for booking bucket list destinations on a budget and finding savings along the way.

Travel expert Nicky Kelvin, senior director of content for The Points Guy, offered his tips for affordable travel techniques.

Where to find the best flight deals

Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.

He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.

From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.

Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs

Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.

In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.

Hyatt rewards, for example, offers all guests free breakfast.

For Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Car Rental, he said you can add your spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver for free.

Loyalty programs are great for airlines too. JetBlue, for example, allows enrolled customers -- even if they don't have enough points for a flight -- to use points for discounts. Plus, with any airline, as you accumulate points to earn status, you can get free seating upgrades.

Travel credit cards with cash back perks

Along with earning points, travel credit cards give you protection for your trip like insurance to help with lost or damaged baggage and trip cancellation protection

As for credit cards, The Points Guy team suggests the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card as an all-around pick -- you get 75,000 miles after meeting your minimum spend in the first three months. Which Kelvin said is a value of over $1,300.

If you're looking to earn the most miles, he said look to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

"You'll earn the most points on all your purchases with this one," he said.

Finally, if you want a credit card with no fee, Kelvin suggested the Bilt Mastercard, which he said is particularly great for renters because you can earn points on what's likely someone's biggest expense.

Save money on international phone plans for summer trips

If someone's trip is taking them out of the country, using a cell phone internationally can cost $10 to 15 per day. For a family of four, that's more than $400 for a week.

If your phones support eSIM, Kelvin suggested purchasing a data plan for your destination through an app such as Airalo, Truphone or GigSky.

For example, one of Airalo's global SIM plans costs $9 for one week, which could save a family close to $350 dollars, depending on their existing international coverage.

To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer.
