No wonder numerous tourists are so attracted to its spellbinding beauty. Some have even decided to purchase residential properties here, some of which are foreclosed properties , to serve as their vacation homes and rental property from which they can earn passive income.

Camiguin Norte, Babuyan Group of Islands

underrated tourist destinations in the philippines

If you have been captivated by the beauty of Batanes and seek thrill in your life, why not visit Camiguin Norte, one of the islands comprising the Babuyan Group of Islands below Batanes?

This island, not to be confused with the Camiguin Island in Mindanao, is under the municipality of Calayan in Cagayan.

It will take you around four to five hours of a small boat ride to reach Camiguin Norte. The waves may be daunting as you pass by the open sea, but the sight of dolphins near your boat and whale sightings en route to the island will definitely make up for it!

Camiguin Norte is an ideal place to visit if you want to witness the unspoiled beauty of the Philippines and feast your eyes and stomach with its abundant seafood. Aside from feasting on seafood, diving, swimming, snorkeling, and hiking are some activities you can do here.

Located off the coast of the Bicol Region, Catanduanes faces the Pacific Ocean, earning the reputation as the “Land of the Howling Winds” because it is the first place in the country often battered by typhoons.

But don’t let the rain dampen your spirits! Virac and other towns in Catanduanes offer tourists exciting activities and attractions, including waterfalls, caves, beaches, fishing villages, and cathedrals.

There are also plenty of elevated points on the island, offering the perfect view of its beaches and other mountains. If you love to feast on lobsters, you’ll undoubtedly love Catanduanes because lobsters here are cheap!

salagdoong beach

Although not as popular as its neighbors, Cebu and Bohol, Siquijor is one of the must-visit destinations in the country. If you love to soak in the beauty of nature, you will surely get your fill in Siquijor. Activities such as cliff diving, swimming, snorkeling, joy riding, and sunset watching are enjoyable on this island. Despite its reputation as an island of sorcery and mystical traditions, its natural wonders are enough reasons for you to visit here.

These are just four of the underrated yet emerging destinations in the Philippines. I hope you visit these places and share your photos and stories during your stay there!

Mt. Bulaylay has the longest and tallest zipline in Nueva Ecija , making it the primary tourist spot in Cuyapo town. The local government of Cuyapo plans to develop it into an eco-tourism park.

2. Candon City Ecotourism Zone

Here’s another reason to visit Ilocos Sur besides the historic city of Vigan: a new ecotourism destination in Candon City is in the works. The Ecotourism Zone in Candon houses a sprawling watershed, and the local government hopes to lure tourists by offering recreational activities nearby.

With the recent opening of the newly built Heroes bypass road in Candon, the city’s tourist spots—including the new ecotourism zone—will be more accessible.

3. Santiago Cove

Ilocos Sur has its version of Boracay in Sabangan Cove (aka Santiago Cove). Like Bora, Santiago Cove boasts white sand and serene, crystal-clear water. Visitors can swim, dive, or unwind while appreciating the beauty of the beach.

4. Pinsal Falls

Another hidden treasure of Ilocos Sur, Pinsal Falls (aka Twin Falls) is an 85-foot cascading waterfall—the largest in the Ilocos region—located in Sta. Maria.

Trek to reach the top of Pinsal Falls. Small jacuzzi-like pools sit above the falls, where tourists can dip into the cold water and enjoy a stunning landscape view .

5. Hinatuan Enchanted River

The Enchanted River in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur isn’t exactly a new tourist attraction, though more tourists have recently discovered it. Still, up to this day, not many people know that this mesmerizing natural wonder exists.

The river is nothing less than magical, as its water changes from aquamarine to blue, depending on its shifting depth. Locals believe that fairies and other mythical spirits protect the river—this adds to the river’s mystical nature.

Tips and Warning

1. never lose your temper when dealing with locals.

Filipinos have a lot of admirable qualities—but punctuality is not one of them. Expect that your flights will be delayed, the food will be served late, the tour won’t start on time, and so on. We have a label for this tardiness habit: Filipino Time .

Lashing out at the flight attendants, waiters, or tour guides won’t improve the situation . You’ll end up wasting your time and energy. Worse, you might become the next viral sensation on social media, like the Chinese tourist who assaulted a cop 13 in a train station.

Be more patient, calm, and diplomatic when dealing with locals on your Philippine trip . You might get better service that way.

2. Pack light and loose clothing

In most tourist spots in the Philippines, the weather tends to be very hot and humid, especially during the summer. Make sure you’ll be comfortable on your trip by bringing clothes that won’t make you sweat buckets.

3. Respect local culture and tradition

Most Filipinos, especially in far-flung places, are conservative. So be careful with what you wear and what you do while vacationing in the Philippines.

Wearing skimpy clothing, skinny dipping, and kissing in public may be acceptable in your home country, but these things can offend the locals and make them uncomfortable. Learn a lesson from a Taiwanese tourist fined for wearing a string bikini 14 in Boracay.

Also, places (like mountains, churches, etc.) and religious rituals are sacred to the locals. This is why researching the destination before a trip is crucial . Be mindful and respectful of the customs in the places you visit in the Philippines. Don’t be noisy and rowdy in sacred places and during rituals.

4. Respect the environment

As a tourist, your role goes beyond just visiting a place. So you can enjoy the place as much as you did the first time you visited , do your share in preserving the environment. This couldn’t be more crucial in the Philippines, where natural resources abound.

Simple practices—like not leaving trash on the beach, not stepping on corals, and not disturbing marine life and wildlife—prevent harming the environment. Know the guidelines before you go. If you aren’t sure about something, ask your tour guide.

5. Beware of tourist scams

Taxi scams, especially at the airport, often happen to foreign tourists in the Philippines. When hailing a taxi, ensure the driver agrees to use the meter. Otherwise, you might be charged a fixed and steep price.

If the driver refuses your request, wait for another taxi. Book a ride via an app like Grab, Micab, or Hirna.

Also, beware of pickpockets in crowded areas (like malls and markets), jeepneys, and buses. Don’t put your valuables in the back pocket of your pants or backpack. Store them safely in a belt bag or sling bag instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. is the philippines safe to visit.

Yes, it’s generally safe to travel to the Philippines. While there are valid concerns about violence due to terrorism and the nationwide campaign against illegal drugs, these are isolated cases that don’t happen in the entire country.

For peace of mind, read up and follow any travel alert issued by your government. It also helps to research the peace and order situation in the place you plan to visit, not just in the Philippines but in other countries.

As for the Philippine tourist spots featured in this post, rest assured that these destinations are safe to visit. Of course, you also have to do your part in ensuring your safety anywhere you go.

2. Do I need a visa to visit the Philippines?

Tourists from most parts of the world can enter the Philippines without a visa for a temporary visit of up to 30 days. Holders of Hong Kong and Macau passports can stay in the Philippines visa-free for up to 14 days. Check the Department of Foreign Affairs website for the list of visa-free countries. However, a visa is required for passport holders of certain countries like China, North Korea, India, the majority of the Middle East, and a few parts of Africa and Europe.

3. When is the best time to visit the Philippines?

When traveling, the right time to visit the country depends on your purpose, preference, or priority. If you want good weather, especially in a beach destination, schedule your trip in the dry season from November to May. The wet season starts in June and ends in October, so avoid this period if you don’t want the rain to ruin your trip.

Looking to experience what it’s like to have “more fun in the Philippines”? Visit during the summer when most festivals and events are held and when beaches are most beautiful. For those who want to avoid the crowd and score cheaper travel deals, avoid the peak season. Christmas, Holy Week, and other holidays and the summer months from March to May are the busiest tourist season.

The top tourist spots in the Philippines also get crowded with tourists on weekends. While it’s good to visit in the off-peak season, it’s better to schedule your visit in the shoulder months of May to June and October to November for a lesser chance of rain. The rainy season in the Philippines is an ideal time to visit for surfing (as waves are stronger) and visit waterfalls (as the water isn’t dried up).

4. How many days are enough to visit the Philippines?

The ideal duration of your stay depends on the number and types of destinations you’ll visit. Two to three days are enough to explore a beach destination like Boracay and Bohol. If you visit Puerto Princesa, El Nido, and Coron in Palawan, you should spend more than a week exploring the best tourist spots there.

Consider extending your stay for a week if you have side trips to nearby tourist spots (e.g., Iloilo-Guimaras/Antique trip). Your trip could be longer, lasting for about two weeks to a month, if you’re a backpacker hopping from one island or province to another (e.g., Palawan-Cebu-Bohol trip).

In destinations like Intramuros, Vigan, Tagaytay, Subic, and Bataan, a day trip, an overnight or weekend trip will cover all the best attractions.

5. How do you get around in the Philippines?

The most popular and cheapest transport options are jeepneys and tricycles.  Habal-habal  (motorcycle ride) is common in the provinces, too. However, if you’re traveling with a group (especially with kids and the elderly), go for convenient modes of transport like taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab (available in certain areas only). These vehicles are typically used to get to the city or town proper from the airport.

You can explore places on foot for short distances and areas where public transportation is almost non-existent. Buses and vans are the common transport choices when traveling from one town or city to another, while boats are used for traveling to different islands or beaches.

To get to a province in the Philippines from your home country, the usual jump-off point is in Manila. For instance, you have to fly to Manila to reach Palawan or Davao.

6. How much money should I bring to the Philippines?

The average daily cost per traveler in the Philippines is around ₱1,500 or less, depending on the destination. Cash is the country’s most accepted mode of payment, so be sure to bring enough for your entire stay, especially if you travel to remote areas that don’t accept credit cards and have no ATMs.

Consider also that travelers can bring up to $10,000 (or its equivalent in another currency) into or out of the Philippines. You can carry a higher amount, though. But you’re required to declare it upon arrival at the Bureau of Customs Desk at the airport. If you don’t, you may be fined or jailed, or your money may be confiscated.

7. How do I travel for cheap in the Philippines?

The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to visit, luring budget travelers worldwide. But, of course, you can further save on your travel costs.

Here are some quick tips for cheaper travel to the Philippines:

a. Book flights, accommodations, and tour packages early. b. Fly with budget airlines (the most popular are Cebu Pacific and AirAsia) offering discounted airfare and wait for seat sales when prices drop significantly. c. Travel during weekdays and off-peak season when hotels and tour operators offer significant discounts and other great deals. d. Travel to cheaper destinations like Guimaras, Masbate, Bontoc, and other underrated tourist spots in the Philippines. e. If you can, go for DIY travel and plan your trip.  f. Visit free and cheap attractions like parks and museums. g. Eat at small eateries (locally called  carinderia ), fast-food restaurants (Jollibee and Mcdonald’s are the most popular), and mall food courts.

8. Can I fly a drone in the Philippines?

Yes, flying a drone is allowed in the country, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). However, specific rules must be followed before and while operating your unit.

Here are the most crucial drone regulations to keep in mind:

a. Secure a permit from the local government office to fly a drone. b. Fly only in the daytime and good weather. c. Get a Certificate of Authorization from the CAAP if you fly a drone that weighs at least 7 kg. or 15 lbs. or for commercial purposes. d. Don’t fly within 10-km. radius from an airport. e. Avoid flying in crowded areas like markets and schools. f. Fly only up to 400 ft. above ground level.

underrated tourist destinations in the philippines

I really love the idea of going to the spots that aren't prime tourist destinations. All of the crowds really take away from the experience.

The lesser known, less visited destinations are often the best of all! And I love the pics of all that blue water- reminds me of the Caribbean.

From what I've heard, once you visit Siquijor you will not wish to go to other places. Its so peaceful and relaxing island, the people are friendly and the sights were amazing. This place goes into my list! they have nice beaches too.

I would like to visit the Philippines so will keep this in my back pocket for when we finally make it back out to Asia - the beaches look incredible!

Thanks to several travel lists and heightened tourism all over the world, there are popular Philippines islands with beautiful beaches and natural beauty that get lots of attention.

For example, Boracay has long been hailed as a top tourist destination. Palawan, Siargao (the surfing capital of the Philippines) and Cebu also vie for best tourist spot in the Philippines because of different attributes. Each island is a province on its own with a great mix of city, town, and nature.

Tip: Check out our post, Philippines Travel for Beginners , for those who are are traveling to the Philippines for the first time.

Smart planning with sufficient time is the key to see the best places to visit in the philippines.

For first time travel to the Philippines, a two-week itinerary is an excellent introduction.

But what if it’s your second, third, or maybe even tenth time to visit? Or maybe you just don’t want to join the thousands of people who visit the popular tourist spots in the Philippines every year? Well, you’re in luck!

There are many, many underrated destinations in the Philippines that are just waiting to be discovered. From gorgeous white sand beaches to mountains and rice fields to terraces, Philippines sightseeing offers excellent experiences for the adventurous traveler looking for an unspoiled paradise among underrated beaches and natural wonders.

Beautiful island in the Philippines - Bonbon Beach on Romblon Island

Romblon is a province made of 20 islets. There are 17 municipalities spread among these islets and, as they’re geographically separated by water, each has developed their own dialects. If your idea of one of the best places to go in the Philippines consists of an unspoiled and not frequently visited island in the Philippines, Romblon province might be a good choice.

The capital, also named Romblon, is the heart of the province both in terms of economy and in terms of travel. It’s best known for its main export to the rest of the country thus earning its nickname the “Marble Capital of the Philippines”.

There are three major islets in the province: Romblon Island , Tablas Island , and Sibuyan Island . The province is reachable by a quick flight from Manila to Tablas, or by an overnight ferry from Batangas to each of the islands.

Seems fair, but the main reason not many people visit the province is the scarcity of transportation. Only Cebu Pacific flies directly to Tablas three or four times a week, and the ferry rides last for up to 20 hours at a time. Traveling there can sound quite tedious, but the rewards of the islands are beyond measure.

There aren’t many commercial establishments around Romblon. You won’t be seeing luxury resorts on the Philippine beaches here. Many of the accommodations are owned by locals that offer homestays or AirBnB’s run by foreigners who fell in love with the islands and decided to make it their home.

Once there, you can explore the many unspoiled and almost virgin beaches around all three major islets. The most popular stretch of sand is called Bonbon Beach located in Romblon Island.

Some say Bonbon is one of the best beaches in the Philippines, with its white beach sand and turquoise waters. (Don’t take our word for it;  click here for TripAdvisor reviews.)

The crystal-clear blue waters are a given, but what people really wait for at Bonbon is the sandbar that appears during low tide. This temporarily connects the beach to nearby Bang-og Island, small and deserted but exciting to explore.

You can hire a local boat man (around $40 for the day) and spend your days just hopping from one islet in Romblon to another, having your own private beach picnics, and snorkeling around thriving corals.

You can also spend time on land and hike to the many waterfalls ( most of them in Sibuyan Island ), or cliff jump into the ocean, into lagoons, and into lakes. There are sea turtle sanctuaries to explore, World War II ruins to roam around in, and lots of amazingly good and amazingly cheap local food to try.

Danjugan Island

Danjugan Island is a preservation success story among Philippines attractions. This 43-hectare strip of island sits in the middle of a protected marine sanctuary and is privately managed by the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation . In the 90s, the island was almost wiped out for drilling and deforestation purposes. Today, it remains as beautiful as it has always been.

Biodiversity in the island is at an all-time high. Fishing is prohibited, giving life to large areas of corals and reefs. The island is also densely forested and home to many indigenous species. Visits to the island need to be pre-arranged through their website , and each visitor will go through an orientation about the do’s and don’ts on the island.

turtle 322416 1920

The journey to Danjugan Island isn’t very straightforward either. From Manila, you can fly to the city of Bacolod via Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. Once in the city, it will take a 5-hour bus ride and a 30-minute boat ride before you get to Danjugan Island. A full day tour costs Php 1,950 (approximately $38), which includes lunch and free use of some water equipment like snorkels and kayaks. On the island itself, there are two main accommodations: Moray Lagoon Camp with open-air cabanas, and Typhoon Beach with solar-powered private rooms.

You may be better off selecting accommodations in nearby Sipalay or Cartagena. Check out the options and book using our interactive map:

Danjugan Island may be small, but it is jampacked with marine life and biodiversity you won’t normally see in other famous places in the Philippines. Because of this, snorkeling and diving are the best activities you can do around the island. Sea turtles and reef sharks are a very common sight, as well as giant clams surrounded by all kinds of fish, shellfish, and even sea snakes.

Back on land, bird watchers can look for the 73 species that call the island their home. There are several paths through the forest that visitors can follow for a great afternoon hike.

For accommodations in Bacolod, use the interactive map below.

where to visit in philippines - abra

If adventuring through dense forests is more your thing, head to Abra in the northern part of Luzon. It’s a landlocked province 8 hours away from Manila. It’s sandwiched between two very popular tourist destinations, Baguio and Cordillera , which is why it’s usually ignored by most travelers. However, this small province promises unique sights without the crowds and chaos of tourists.

The most instagrammed location in Abra is Kaparkan Falls . It’s not the highest nor the strongest, but its extraordinary formation is reason alone to pay it a visit. Water gently cascades down terraces of unique rock formations into multi-tiered pools. While it’s beautiful all year round, the best time to visit is August and September where the water levels are high and you get the full effect of the site.

Another must-see is Kili Falls where you can sit in a hot spring and watch fall into the icy river. The area is surrounded by boulders in the middle of the forest. Sitting in the water is quite surreal, surrounded by the sights and music of nature.

Abra is an excellent destination for outdoorsy travelers, what with the many waterfalls, spring pools, rock formations and captivating mountain views. At the same time, you can roam around the town and visit Spanish-colonial heritage sites side by side local establishments with Ilokano culture on display.

There are museums and churches to visit, most notable of which is the Gabriela Silang Gallery of Fine Arts . Silang, often referred to as the “Joan of Arc of the Philippines”, is a female leader of the movement against Spain. The Gallery is housed in a private home of a renowned artist, retired Philippine Ambassador Rosario Carino. It features an impressive collection of documents, furniture, artifacts, and paintings, some of which done by national artists and heroes.

philippines points of interest

What used to be a 5-hour land trip from Manila is now a two-hour ferry ride. Bataan is most known for its place in history as the starting point of the Bataan Death March . American and Filipino prisoners were forced by the Japanese Army to walk 65 miles to a prison camp. From this alone, you are sure to learn a lot of history in the province.

The most iconic landmark in Bataan is the Shrine of Valor located in Mount Samat bordering the province. It was built in 1970 to commemorate the fallen heroes of Bataan. The shrine is a giant cross rising 302 feet high with a 30-meter long view deck overlooking the province of Bataan. Below is a shrine, a colonnade with an altar, and a WWII museum . This complex is one of the must visit places in the Philippines, a humbling experience which tells the story of the trials and torture that prisoners endured during the Japanese occupation.

Tip: WWII buffs will consider the Bataan Surrender Site Marker and the Zero Kilometer Death March Marker as must see places in Philippines history as well.

However, despite its grim history, Bataan boasts of many sights that will make your trip a lot lighter. It’s a rising eco-tourism destination where travelers can take trips to mountains, beaches, turtle sanctuaries, waterfalls, spring formations, and bird watching sites.

There are many cultural sights in the province, including Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar – a sprawling property with a collection of old Spanish homes uprooted and transferred to the resort. Click here to see reviews and book accommodations of the onsite hotel.

Heritage Day Trip from Manila to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar History and architecture fans will enjoy a guided experience visiting 21 vintage homes collected by a local builder. Click here for more information and pricing.

Since Bataan also lies between two major Philippine peaks, Mount Natib and Mount Mariveles, mountain adventures are very popular. There are many hiking and biking trails that visitors can follow, as well as waterfalls and pools to trek to.

As Bataan also faces the South China Sea, there are many water-related trips to do as well. You can visit the Pawikan (Sea Turtle) Conservation Center , lounge on the many beaches in Morong, or take a tour around Five Fingers in Mariveles for cliffside views, grassy crags, blue waters, and white sand beaches.

philippines places to visit - Sarangani

The region of Mindanao in the south of the Philippines has received a bad rap due to news of militant insurgencies and civil conflict. This mostly Muslim province in the Philippines has endured unfavorable reputation, but it remains one of the most beautiful places in the Philippines.

While there certainly are areas where tourists shouldn’t visit, the vast majority of Mindanao is home to some of the most unique landscapes and places to see in the Philippines where safety and security have never been an issue. With so many hidden gems just waiting to be discovered, Mindanao deserves a chance to be on any adventurer’s travel bucket list.

Tip: See our review of Pearl Farm Overwater Bungalow Resort on Samal Island, outside Davao in Mindanao.

One such place in Mindanao is Sarangani . This once quiet little province at the southern tip of the Philippines was thrown into the limelight when its hometown hero, Manny Pacquiao , received boxing championship titles year after year.

Before then, not much is known about Sarangani. Now, while it’s not yet one of the top destinations in the Philippines, Sarangani is slowly rising in popularity as an amazing and relatively untouched travel location, one of those undiscovered places that may not remain secluded and undiscovered for long.

Thanks to its location right by Celebes Sea, Sarangani has countless white-sand beaches to enjoy. It has six coastal towns with very few commercial establishments, giving travelers a rustic and raw experience. These are some of the most beautiful and top beaches in the Philippines, lined by dense forests for a quiet immersion with nature.

Since there are few visitors, its marine life is also thriving even without much intervention. Dive spots are very much alive with turtles, whales, dolphins and tuna, Mindanao’s main fish export.

There are also lots of things to do for adrenaline junkies. You can paraglide off the mountain top at SAFI Ranch in Maasim , which was once the site for the prestigious Paragliding Accuracy World Cup.

Visitors can also ride the rapids on water tubes on Pangi River. Lucky adventurers have also reported sightings of the country’s national bird, the Philippine Eagle, soaring high above.

Philippine Eagle - things to see in the Philippines

Sarangani is also rich in culture. There are several museums that display artifacts from cave discoveries and centuries-old tribes, such as the Lamlifew Tribal Museum .

The main cultural gem comes from the traditional handlooms of the Blaan tribe. The fabrics and garments weaved by the tribe showcases world class artistry in very distinct and colorful patterns so you can bring home a treasured piece of Philippine culture.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines

The country’s tourism slogan is very much alive wherever you go in the country. Filipinos are known to be warm, friendly, and always happy, and will readily welcome visitors with open arms. While there are must visit attractions, the best place to travel in the Philippines might be to go off the beaten path and discover new destinations that not even many Filipinos have ever seen.

5 underrated travel destinations visited by Filipino celebrities

5 underrated travel destinations visited by Filipino celebrities

If you are someone who loves to travel, you probably have a long list of countries you are dreaming of visiting one day.

Of course, there are the must-see places before you die and popular tourist destinations, but why not take the road less traveled every once in a while?

As you list down all the places you want to explore, you might also want to include these five underrated travel destinations visited by Beauty Gonzalez, Ellen Adarna, Jodi Sta. Maria, Anne Curtis, and K Brosas to spice up your travel itinerary this 2024 and beyond.

1. Latin America

If you are in for culture, history, art, and ancient ruins, you might want to visit some countries in Latin America just like Beauty Gonzales and Jodi Sta. Maria did!

During her Latin American tour, Beauty visited the Chichicastenango town in Guatemala, where you can find The Cemetery of Chichicastenango.

Perched above the bustling market town of Chichicastenango, this sacred space is not merely a final resting place for the departed but also a reflection of the rich cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs of the Mayan people.

As one approaches the cemetery, the vibrant colors of the surrounding landscape give way to rows of white-washed tombs adorned with vivid floral offerings and intricately woven textiles.

Aside from the Chichicastenango town, the Kapuso actress also dropped by the Museo de Arte de Colonial in Antigua.

The Museo de Arte Colonial showcases colonial-era art and artifacts, reflecting the region's cultural fusion of European and indigenous influences. Through its exhibits, the museum highlights the significance of the colonial era in shaping the cultural identity of Latin America.

Meanwhile, Jodi went further south for her Latin American tour as she visited Chile , where she had her face painted by the Rapa Nui people and immersed herself in local culture. The "Unbreak My Heart" star also saw the famous Moai statues in real life!  These famous gigantic stones are believed to have been created to honor ancestral chiefs or important figures, serving as guardians of the island and embodying the spiritual connection between the Rapa Nui people and their ancestors.

Traveling from the Philippines to Latin America typically involves multiple flights with layovers in various countries. Here are some airlines that may offer routes connecting the Philippines to Guatemala: Emirates, Qatar Airways, LATAM, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Turkish Airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

These airlines often operate flights from major cities in the Philippines, such as Manila or Cebu, to various international airports like Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Istanbul, Seoul, and others. From these airports, you would then connect to flights heading to your desired Latin American City.

2. Antarctica

Antarctica is one of the most remote places on Earth, so for some people, visiting the world’s seventh continent is a pipe dream.

While traveling to Antarctica is difficult, it is not impossible and totally worth it for its majestic icy landscapes and rich wildlife, especially the penguins.

Earlier in February, Ellen Adarna and Derek Ramsay went on an icy adventure in Antarctica. During their stay, the couple saw penguins inhabiting the place and also had fun trekking the snowy mountains.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Ellen Adarna Ramsay (@maria.elena.adarna)

To reach the continent, first you have to fly from Manila to Buenos Aires, Argentina via Emirates, Etihad, KLM, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, or Korean Air.

From there, go to Ushuaia, Argentina and take a cruise ship to Antarctica. This is the most popular gateway for most visitors and it's the fastest route too! Sometimes, the tour companies already provide the flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia.

Since no nation claims ownership over Antarctica, a visa is not required for travelers. However, it may be required for travel to the country from which you're embarking to the Antarctic. So if you will be riding a cruise ship from Argentina, then you have to secure an Argentinian visa.

3. Zimbabwe

The continent of Africa is popular for safari trips. If you’re not sure which country in particular to visit, take a leaf out of Anne Curtis and Erwan Heussaff’s book and travel to Zimbabwe!

During their trip back in 2018, the couple had unforgettable wildlife encounters in some of Zimbabwe’s national parks, Mana Pools and Hwange. They met some African elephants, lions, and rhinoceroses.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Anne Curtis (@annecurtissmith)

There are a number of airlines that offer direct and connecting flights from the Philippines to Zimbabwe, which include: Qatar Airways, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, EgyptAir, and RwandAir.

Like any other airlines, these airlines often operate flights from major cities in the Philippines, such as Manila or Cebu, to various international airports like Doha, Dubai, Addis Ababa, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Cairo, or Kigali. From these airports, you would then connect to flights heading to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, or other major cities like Bulawayo or Victoria Falls.

The good news is Philippine passport holders aren't required to apply for a visa if they wish to go for short stays or tourism purposes in Zimbabwe. However, it's required to obtain an electronic travel authorization (eTA or eVisa) before entering the country.

4. Silk Road

Another underrated travel destination that Jodi Sta. Maria visited are the countries on the Silk Road.

The ancient Silk Road passed through numerous countries across Asia, connecting the East and West through trade and cultural exchange.

During Jodi’s Silk Road tour with her son Thirdy , she wore traditional Kazakh clothes and posed for photos with an eagle while in Kazakhstan.

They also went to Kyrgyzstan and explored the city of Bishkek. They took photos with Yurts, a mobile tent-like shelter used by Kyrgyz, Kazakh, and Mongolian people.

Several airlines operate flights from the Philippines to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, typically with one or more layovers. Some of the airlines you might consider include: Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Aeroflot, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Flydubai, and Air Astana.

These airlines often have routes that connect major cities in the Philippines (such as Manila or Cebu) to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and to cities in Kazakhstan like Almaty or Nur-Sultan. However, the availability of flights and specific routes may vary depending on the season and current travel restrictions. It's advisable to check with these airlines directly or use online travel agencies to find the most convenient and cost-effective options for your travel dates.

5. Mongolia

Mongolia, situated in the heart of Asia, is a land of vast landscapes, nomadic culture, and rich history.

There are many fun things to do in Mongolia, including riding camels and exploring their deserts. Just look at what K Brosas did on her Mongolian tour : she explored the Gobi Desert while riding a camel!

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Maria Carmela (@kbrosas)

The good news is like Zimbabwe, Mongolia doesn't require a visa for Philippine passport holders visiting Mongolia for a short-term stay: 21 days.

Like any other country on the list, traveling from the Philippines to Mongolia typically involves multiple flights with layovers in various countries. Here are some airlines that may offer routes from the Philippines to Mongolia: Asiana Airlines, Korean Air, Air China, China Southern Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Aeroflot, and MIAT Mongolian Airlines.

These airlines frequently offer flights to several international hubs, like Seoul, Beijing, Guangzhou, Istanbul, Doha, or Dubai, from major Philippine cities like Manila or Cebu. You would then take connecting flights that would bring you to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, from these airports.

Meet The Billionaire Betting Big On An Idyllic Island Retreat In The Philippines

Inside andrew tan's $720 million eco-tourism project in the country’s pristine beachside paradise., by jonathan burgos , forbes staff.

T he pitch is for tropical paradise: turquoise waters that lap a pristine shoreline fringed by lush, mist-streaked greenery. Philippine property giant Megaworld extolls on its Facebook page the virtues of Palawan island, the largest of a 1,780-island group by the same name that hangs to the left of the island nation in the Pacific. Here, Megaworld is pursuing its most complex project yet, a resort and residential estate that will be the island’s biggest real estate development to date.

On 462 hectares in San Vicente, a quiet, relatively untouched corner of Palawan’s northern coast, known for its rich biodiversity, virgin forests, steep karst cliffs and the longest white sand beach in the Philippines, Megaworld has a 15-year plan to raise a township from among the coconut trees—an ecofriendly addition, it says, to its hospitality, office, retail and residential portfolio that spans the country. When finished, Paragua Coastown will include two 10-story hotels, a residential condominium, villas, a hospital, a school, and wellness-related centers.

Megaworld, owned by billionaire Andrew Tan ’s spirits-to-property conglomerate Alliance Global Group, is pouring over 40 billion pesos ($720 million) into the venture—a tenth of what it plans to spend on building townships across the Philippines in the next five years. The company is banking on getting in on the ground floor as the island remakes itself into one of the country’s top tourist destinations. Some 1.5 million people, of which about 650,000 were overseas travelers, visited the island in 2023, nearly twice as many as the previous year, according to government figures, as tourists return to the Philippines post-Covid. (Boracay, the archipelago’s most popular resort island, had over 2 million visitors last year.) “We intend to showcase the best sustainable tourism and green living concepts by developing it into an ecotourism township,” Kevin Tan, Andrew’s eldest son and Megaworld’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, says by email.

Andrew Tan (left), chairman of spirits-to-property conglomerate Alliance Global and his eldest son, Kevin Tan, CEO of Alliance Global.

San Vicente is seen as the next frontier in the island’s commercial boom, catching up to Palawan’s other island centers where tourism is flourishing, including its capital, Puerto Princesa City (home to the 8.2-kilometer underground river, a Unesco World Heritage site), and El Nido, a municipality comprised of small islands at Palawan’s northern tip that has in recent years become a playground for backpackers and jetsetters alike. Ayala Land, controlled by billionaire Jaime Zobel de Ayala and his family, has already made inroads as El Nido’s biggest developer, owning the 325-hectare Lio tourism estate along with four other resorts in the town’s smaller islands.

Megaworld broke ground last year on its 306-room Savoy Hotel Palawan and the nearby 189-unit Oceanfront Premier Residences tower, which are both slated to be completed in 2028. Construction of the 313-room Paragua Sands Hotel, which will open in 2029, has yet to start.

Most rooms will have water views, and the hiking trails of the Pagdanan mountain range, home to threatened wildlife such as the Philippine cockatoo, gray imperial pigeon and blue-naped parrot, are a short drive away.

Megaworld is building Paragua Coastown (left) along the coconut tree-lined (right) coastline of San Vicente, Palawan island in the Philippines.

“More than just sustainable tourism, our vision for Paragua Coastown is to be able to provide an opportunity to those who want to live the island life within a lush and sustainable landscape,” Tan says. To that end, he says Megaworld will incorporate solar and other renewable energy sources into its building design. There will be a waste-to-energy plant to supply electricity to the township as part of a new waste-management system and sewage-treatment center.

About 40% of Paragua Coastown’s land area has been earmarked for open (albeit landscaped) spaces, while a mangrove forest reserve in its boundaries will be left untouched. Megaworld also plans to plant thousands of trees on 100 hectares deforested by commercial logging, once a mainstay of the local economy, and upgrade the mostly dirt tracks used by San Vicente's 30,000 residents to a network of roads in and around the property.

Ana Margarita Lustre-Malijan, vice president at local hotelier and construction firmArlustre Group, believes such developments will be a huge boon for Palawan, bringing jobs and income to the island where about 15% of the population falls below the poverty line. It could also be the tipping point to improve accessibility to the area. There’s an airport in San Vicente, but Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, two of the nation’s main airlines, don’t fly there. Getting to San Vicente means a 90-minute flight from Manila or Cebu to Puerto Princesa and a bumpy four-hour car ride across rugged terrain. Cebu Pacific CEO Michael Szucs tells Forbes Asia that the airline will consider flying to San Vicente once the Megaworld hotels are built.

Tourists visiting the Puerto Princesa underground river (top left), a Unesco World Heritage site, while a wild pig roams Coconut Beach in San Vicente. View of San Vicente's famed stretch of white-sand beach (right).

Besides attracting homegrown developers, Palawan has become a stopping point for international hospitality brands. “Palawan stands out as an attractive destination, blending cultural richness with natural landscapes,” Raj Menon, Marriott’s president for Asia Pacific excluding China, says by email. The U.S. group will add over 70 rooms this year to its recently opened 168-room Four Points by Sheraton on Sabang Beach, near Puerto Princesa’s underground river, to meet demand. American hotel chains Best Western and Wyndham Hotels’ Microtel have also established a presence on the island.

Megaworld has begun marketing the Paragua Coastown residential units, which will range from 32-square-meter studios to 106-square-meter two-bedroom suites, and expects them to generate some 2.3 billion pesos in sales. Doubling down on Palawan, Megaworld announced in December it would spend another 7 billion pesos to develop a mixed-use complex on a 6-hectare oceanfront site in Puerto Princesa. Named Baytown Palawan, the commercial, hotel and residential project is expected to take five years to complete. “Palawan has always been a hotspot for local and international tourists,” Tan says.

BUCKET LIST

International visitors to the Philippines have gradually returned but remain below pre-pandemic levels.

Palawan isn’t the Tans’ only tourism play. They are building resorts, retail space and convention facilities across the archipelago, including tourist hotspots Boracay, Cebu and Davao. Megaworld’s hospitality operations accounted for over 5% of the company’s 2023 revenue of 69.7 billion pesos, and the company expects the business will make up at least 10% of revenue by 2028.

Andrew Tan launched Megaworld in the late 1980s, pioneering the living concept of a city within a city in the Philippines. It now counts 24 townships (with an additional seven under construction) nationwide, part of his sprawling business empire under Alliance Global comprising a controlling interest in Emperador, owner of the Dalmore whisky and Fundador brandy brands, and a stake in the Philippine franchisee of McDonalds. Tan ranked No. 11 on the Philippines’ 50 Richest 2023 list with $2.4 billion net worth.

“Expanding our townships all over the Philippines will sustain our growth as a company and allow us to also diversify our offering in the real estate industry,” says son Kevin, who is also vice chairman and CEO of Alliance Global. “Through these developments, we can make a significant impact across economic sectors.”

“A True Disappointment:” People Are Sharing Underwhelming Travel Destinations To Skip, And The Gems You Should Consider Instead

"This one may be controversial, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

It's a great big world out there — and there are so many places to see. But it can be difficult to decipher between disappointing tourist traps and destinations that are actually so worth the hype. To help with this, I scoured advice from travelers on Reddit and within the BuzzFeed Community . Here are 33 overrated places that — according to them — are not worth your precious time. (Plus 26 others that actually are!)

1. underrated: albania.

A beach with very blue water

"The northern part is filled with beautiful landscapes and mountain ranges, and the south has beaches with crystal blue water. You can find incredibly nice resorts and hotels to stay at for very affordable prices. The people are extremely welcoming, and the hospitality is great."

— u/Handsomeclooney

2. Overrated: Downtown Dubai

A cityscape of Dubai from an infinity pool

"It's talked up as one of the best tourist destinations in the world, but when I was there it felt like an amusement park under construction. I felt like I was constantly being shuttled from one tourist trap to another." — u/NamerNotLiteral

3. Underrated: Lima, Peru

Lima, Peru coastline

"I hear so many people say to skip it or only spend a day there, but I would say it's worth a trip. The historic downtown is gorgeous, and it’s on the coast with plenty of beaches. Plus the food and people are awesome. I spent four days there and still wish I had more time to explore."

— u/Ninjadwarf00

4. Overrated: Bourbon Street, New Orleans

Crowded Bourbon Street in New Orleans for Mardi Gras

"It's filthy, smells like pee, there's gross beer everywhere, and broken glass all over the ground." — u/HeadlessFlyKing

5. Underrated: New Mexico

A rocky desert landscape

"The whole state is underrated, but specifically Albuquerque, Taos, and the New Mexican desert. The scenery is utterly breathtaking, the culture and history are unique, and the food is delicious. You'll know why people call it 'The Land of Enchantment' as soon as you see the Sandia Mountains glowing pink at sunset."

— u/ tinyowlinahat

6. Overrated: Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles

"It’s crowded and smells like pee." — u/ladies-pmme-nudespls

7. Underrated: Pienza, Italy

A couple sitting on the stairs enjoying the view

"Whereas some of the bigger Tuscan towns like Siena and Montepulciano felt a bit touristy, Pienza was truly a hidden gem. It's right in the picturesque Val d'Orcia overlooking vineyards and rolling hills, home to cute, family-run restaurants, tiny shops selling local wine and Pecorino cheese, and stunning Medieval buildings. Everywhere you look seems like it came straight out of a postcard. It was one of the most beautiful towns I've ever seen."

— H annah Loewentheil

8. Underrated: Tunisia

A whitewashed village with blue doors

"Tunisia is one of the best countries I've ever traveled to. It's mind-boggling to me that most people who venture there see it as simply a beach destination. In fact, most things I loved about the country could be found deeper inland."

— u/JayPetey

9. Overrated: Pisa, Italy

A hand pretending to hold the Leaning Tower of Pisa

"Pisa in general I found to be very touristy. If you want to visit a great destination in central Italy, head to the walled city of San Gimignano instead. It's a quick train trip from either Florence or Pisa, and it's 100% worth it."

—u/ nookienostradamus

"Does anyone really need to take the famous holding up the tower picture? Or rather, a picture of all the other tourists taking the holding up the tower picture?"

— u/Fluxxed0

10. Underrated: Dakar, Senegal

Boats on the beach

"Senegal in general, but specifically the capital Dakar and its surroundings should be up there with Cape Town, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Cairo as one of the must-visit destinations in Africa. It's a lovely city with a lot of French influence, and it's a great spot to start a trip in West Africa."

— u/Thrill_Monster

11. Overrated: The Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik

People in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland

"I was very disappointed: It's tepid water flowing down from a power plant. You're better off finding the many natural hot springs scattered around Iceland." — u/KingCharlesHead

12. Underrated: Sicily

A coastal town in Sicily

"Sicily is gorgeous, and the food is out of this world. You get to experience a culture that has been inspired by the Italians, Greeks, Normans, Romans, Ottomans, and Spanish. The climate itself is so diverse: There are beaches, skiing, and Mt. Etna is one of the best wine regions in Europe."

13. Underrated: Ibiza, Spain

A quiet beach in Ibiza

"Ibiza has a bad reputation as a party city, but it's so much more than that if you know where to look. It boasts beautiful nature, amazing historical sites, and lovely quiet small towns all over. Just avoid the capital at night."

14. Overrated: Phuket, Thailand

An aerial shot of a beach

"Planning a vacation there during high season means you'll be sharing the beach with tons of other tourists. While this may improve if you go during low season, you'll most likely get lots of rain. Plus, trash and water quality are a big problem." — u/irishamerican

15. Overrated: Clearwater Beach, Florida

People on the beach

"It's been built up so much there's hardly any beach left. The traffic is really awful, so devote two hours of precious beach time just sitting in it. It stinks big time for the locals."

—u/kurnadurn

16. Overrated: The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

Sightseers flock to view great pyramids at Giza

"This might be harsh, but the swarm of aggressive market vendors surrounding the pyramids makes visiting this site a bit of a nightmare. One woman in our tour group asked a guard to take her photo, and he refused to return her phone unless she paid him. The whole time, we were yelled at and haggled into buying headscarves and assorted souvenirs, which ruined my experience. I spent months looking forward to the trip and felt so disappointed."

— u/ TheTrustyCrumpet

17. Overrated: Atlantic City

Atlantic City boardwalk and Ferris wheel

"Venture a few blocks away from the boardwalk and you'll realize that Atlantic City is incredibly depressing. It's very clearly an area exploited by the big casinos while the locals have been driven to absolute poverty. But they still force a smile to work the shops that are required for the tourist traffic."

"Clearwater Beach is nowhere near the nicest beach in the area. You can drive 10 miles south and have Redington Beach, with nicer sand and almost no other people."

—u ToeyGowd

18. Underrated: Poland

Old Town Gdansk, Poland

"I spent two weeks in Poland, and I have to say it’s a gorgeous country that is much cheaper to visit than many of the more popular European vacation spots. Gdansk is amazing and has a terrific World War II museum. Almost every major city has an Old Town, which is so much fun to explore. Warsaw boasts lots of museums and acres of natural beauty. And if you’re nervous about the language barrier, most people in the major cities speak English. I can't wait to go back to Poland and explore more."

"I was so pleasantly surprised by how beautiful this country is. I road-tripped, and every city was very beautiful and had a unique history. Poland has something for everyone, whether you're looking for culture or to party. The mountains are also beautiful with great hiking. Prices are very affordable, especially if you come from a Western country."

19. Overrated: CancĂșn, Mexico

Aerial view of Cancun Coastline at sunrise

"Sure, it's pretty, but doesn't represent the beauty of Mexico. Go to MĂ©rida — the food is better, and the nature is great."

— u/Lockshala

"There are so many cooler, hipper, better places to visit around CancĂșn and the  Yucatan. Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid, and MĂ©rida are much better if you're considering a trip."

— u/samuraibutter

20. Overrated: Manila, Philippines

A high angle view of people at a busy market in a city

"I really loved the other places I visited in the Philippines, but Manila was awful. The air quality, the traffic, the garbage, I could go on. Most of all, the poverty, especially among children, was heart-wrenching. It was a good wake-up call for a privileged Westerner, but not one I want to experience again."

— u/ westcoastliz

21. Overrated: Kuta, Bali

A street with lots of restaurant and shop signs

"Kuta, a resort town in southern Bali, is the worst. It's been completely and utterly ruined by tourists. I was there during Australian 'spring break,' and the whole place was just overrun with young, drunk 'party bros.' I fled from Kuta as fast as I could."

— u/franichan

22. Underrated: San Sebastian, Spain

San Sebastian, Spain

"This stretch of Northern Spain within 70 miles of the French border has the best food in Europe. San Sebastian is a mecca for foodies, where you can drool over street food for lunch or dine at Michelin-starred restaurants for weeks straight before you run out of new options."

23. Overrated: Times Square, New York

A crowded intersection in Times Square, NYC

"It’s a tourist trap, and the restaurants and shopping aren’t unique to NYC. Why eat in Times Square when you can eat at the same chain restaurants in a Midwestern city for even cheaper?" — u/putmeinthegomi

24. Overrated: Niagara Falls (New York Side)

American Niagara Falls with the Niagara falls city in background.

"You're better off going to the Canadian side."   — u/jgoldblum88

25. Overrated: Nashville, Tennessee

Neon signs of Broadway in Nashville

"Nashville is not a fascinating place. In fact, you could tour every interesting place in a single day. The city is made up of a ton of bars to get drunk at and construction everywhere. I heard something like 10,000 new people a day move there, and I can't understand why. Rent is insanely high because of it. We're at almost $2,000 a month for 1,400 square feet 30 minutes out of Nashville city limits. Honestly, not even locals like living here anymore."

—u/herculeesjr

26. Underrated: Hilo, Hawaii

A waterfall surrounded by lush forest

"Many travelers overlook this whole island, but the lush and green Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawaii is especially incredible. The highway from Waipi’o Valley down to Hilo extends over valleys and cliffs. There are waterfalls and dramatic ocean views, and we were constantly pulling over wanting to take photos."

27. Underrated: Portland, Maine

Boats in a harbor

"Some of the best meals I've ever had were in Portland. The hardest part when visiting is trying to decide whether to go to your well-established favorite spots, or try the new ones that are currently popping up and being raved about."

— theshoegazer

28. Overrated: Las Vegas

Welcome to Las Vegas sign

"I am by no means a prude person, but that place is horrific."

 — u/nocliper101

29. Underrated: Tallinn, Estonia

Snowfall in a European town

"I really wasn't expecting much when I visited. I mostly just decided to stop in Talinn because I was traveling from Finland to London, and it was an off the beaten path location for a quick day trip. But holy crap, it was beautiful, and the people were so friendly. I'd go back there for a proper vacation in a heartbeat."

— fredzesty

"Any of the Baltic states really, but Estonia is an absolutely delightful place. It's super affordable, easy to navigate, the capital city Tallinn is so beautiful and clean, the coast is lovely, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious. I absolutely loved our trip there, and it would be a great base camp if you want to check out the nearby countries of Finland, Norway, and Denmark."

— u/missluluh

30. Overrated: Athens, Greece

A view of Athens and the Acropolis

"Athens was dirty, and there was graffiti everywhere. I didn't feel safe in the city at all. There were insane drivers, and none of the locals were nice. In stark contrast to my experience in Athens, the Greek Islands were some of the most beautiful and enjoyable places I've ever been, filled with the most friendly people."

—u/ rythmik1

31. Overrated: Geneva, Switzerland

An old town surrounded by mountains

"It was most definitely a pretty city, but the soul-crushing cost of everything totally weighed down my experience there. I never expected to pay 24 Swiss Francs for a hamburger in my life...and I never will again."

u/blake22222

32. Underrated: Republic of Georgia

A town built into the mountains with a river running next to it

"Georgia is amazing! It's home to beautiful mountains, chic beaches, friendly people, amazing wine, food unlike anything you’ve ever tried, and a very interesting mix of cultures and influences. I was there for two weeks, but I could have easily stayed for a year."

— MariaPorgirella

33. Overrated: Machu Picchu, Peru

Tourists climbing Machu Picchu

"The site itself is really incredible, but it's overcrowded with so many loud tourists to the point where you feel like you're walking through Disney World instead of a UNESCO heritage site."

34. Underrated: Taipei, Taiwan

Sunset over Taipei, Taiwan

It's my favorite city in Asia: a great mix of traditional Chinese culture with Japanese and US influences. There's fantastic food (especially great street food at the night markets). It's modern enough to be convenient, but not expensive. It's big enough to have lots to do, but small enough to be manageable and not overwhelming. And the people are friendly, open, and helpful."

— u/gotthelowdown

35. Overrated: Bondi Beach, Sydney

A busy Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia

"It's a mediocre beach, and during the summer it's always very crowded, so you hardly have space to swim or enjoy yourself." — u/crocodiledendi

36. Overrated: Marrakesh

The main market square in Marrakesh

"It would have been amazing before about 2000, but now it just feels like a Disneyland version of their culture to cater to Western tourists. And you can't walk 20 feet without being approached by scammers, like, literally every block. The entire city just feels like a facade to attract tourist money."

— u/ legshampo o

"Of all the places we visited in Morocco, Jemaa el-Fnaa was the biggest disappointment. It's full of knock-off clothes and guys trying to get you to take pictures with cobras. Marrakesh in general is awesome, but the market is a letdown." — u/deleted

37. Overrated: Walt Disney World, Orlando

Characters at Disney World

"Disney World is the only place I’ve been that truly disappointed me. It had no redeeming qualities at all. You have to pay just to see characters or just about anything , all the rides lead right into overpriced gift shops, the lines were horrendous, and the rides were only mediocre. Disney is commercialism and exploitation of the consumer at its finest."

"Want to eat? Be ready to shell out $50 a person per day. Oh, you came for the rides? Enjoy the two or three you can actually enjoy on a busy day."

—u/flipamadiggermadoo

38. Underrated: Oman

A boat on a bay

"For people who love the outdoors, Oman is a no-brainer. There's hiking, camping, dune bashing, and miles of untouched coastline. There are even lush rain forests. It's also extremely safe."

39. Overrated: Stonehenge

Crowds arriving to visit Stonehenge

"It’s a set of rocks out in the middle of a field that smells like sheep poop. It was  cool for a few minutes, but far too big of a hassle to be worth it." — u/opvina4

40. Underrated: Osaka

Tatoyaki cooking in a street food stall

"People tend to only visit Tokyo and Kyoto, but Osaka shouldn't be overlooked. It's a big city like Tokyo, but with a much longer history. It's located smack dab in the middle of the Kansai region, the historical cultural center of Japan. It's known to be more fun and laid-back, and I think there's some truth to that. It's also the culinary capital of Japan, a must-visit for all foodies."

— u/CaptainNomihodai

41. Underrated: Romania

Medieval castles surrounded by greenery

"Romania is absolutely amazing. This Balkan country boasts beautiful sites, nature, warm sandy beaches, friendly people, and good food. And the icing on that cake is that it's incredibly affordable. I never understand why more people don't travel there."

—u/ louise1969

42. Overrated: Cinque Terre, Italy

Tiered colorful houses

"This one may be controversial, but I found this handful of villages in coastal Liguria to be very boring and overly touristy. All the hiking trails were closed. Either way, it's a day trip at best, and I would recommend visiting the Amalfi Coast over Cinque Terre."

—u/CaligulaAndHisHorse

43. Underrated: Girona, Spain

A coastal Spanish town

"People usually just go to Barcelona, but they overlook Girona just 100 kilometers away. It's a beautiful small city with an impressive old town. It's so beautiful that you might recognize the cathedral and other parts of the city from some  Game of Thrones   scenes."

— ropra7645

44. Overrated: The Waikiki Strip, Honolulu

Crowded Waikiki Beach in Oahu

"There are so many cooler places on the island to spend your time." — u/Jubilies

"Oahu is absolutely beautiful and worth visiting, but stay away from Waikiki. It's overpriced, crowded, and the beach is tiny. Waimea Bay on the North Shore during the summer and Lanikai/Kailua beach during the winter are way better." — u/deleted

45. Overrated: Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Monks walking near Angkor Wat

"It's so full of people that you can hardly move without stepping on someone's feet. And it's impossible to get photos without a million other tourists in them."

u/godless-life

46. Underrated: Giethoorn, Netherlands

Boats in a canal

"It's a small village where you can sail on a boat through the canals and just enjoy the view. In the summer it can get a bit crowded, but it's a lovely city. There are restaurants along the canals where you relax and have a drink. Not many tourists know about it, but it's a must-visit if you're in the Netherlands."

— u/imjohnk

47. Overrated: The Great Wall of China, Beijing

A crowd on the Great Wall of China

"If you go to the Great Wall of China, I'd suggest not going to the section right there in Beijing. It's newly rebuilt and touristy. For a much better experience, drive a ways out of the city to the Simatai section (120 kilometers northeast of Beijing). There, you'll find an original portion of the Great Wall that is uncrowded and more authentic."

— u/DownUpOverAndBack

48. Overrated: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

People on a wide beach

"If you're on the Carolina coast, go somewhere else like Charleston. It's so much nicer." — u/brokendowndryer

49. Underrated: Alentejo, Portugal

A beach town surrounded by hills

"If you're looking for a quiet vacation, Alentejo is for you. You can visit Roman ruins, old churches, and see Moorish architecture in southern Portugal. There's also a ton of natural beauty from lakes to rolling hills and big, open farms. The region makes great local wine, and the food is delicious too. You can easily combine a trip to Alentejo with a visit to Spain, a beachy getaway in the Algarve, or a city escape to Lisbon." — sarapm

50. Underrated: Mainland Greece

The sun setting over a beautiful, steep landscape

"Everyone travels to the Greek islands and doesn't really spend time in the north on the mainland, but regions in Northern Greece like Halkidiki are very nice too! And the mainland has a fairly overlooked repertoire of wildlife preserves."

— u/Pontios93

51. Overrated: Monaco

Yachts in a harbor with a hilly city in the background

"I was in southern France and decided to take a quick trip to Monaco because I has heard great things about it. Once I got there though, I was thoroughly disappointed with the place. There was nothing but high-end clothing stores, extremely overpriced (and terrible) food, and docks filled with yachts. There was a complete absence of culture of anything interesting. It just felt like a place where ultra-rich people go to flaunt off their wealth."

52. Overrated: Goa, India

A beach with boats and people in Goa, India

"Goa is talked up to be a legendary beach destination, but it really isn't that great.  It's crazy busy, the water can be polluted, and it's not relaxing. If you're looking for a beach getaway, there are many better options."

—u/Thrill_Monster

53. Underrated: Adelaide, Australia

Steps leading to a beach

"Think: stunning wineries, a beautiful coast, and a vibrant food scene. The city itself is absolutely stunning, and the locals are so friendly. There's just as much to do in Adelaide as there is in Melbourne or Sydney."

— u/Gretchenmeows

54. Overrated: Venice, Italy

Gondolas in a Venetian canal

"Taking a gondola ride through the canals was cool, and the city itself is pretty, but Venice gets old quickly."

— u/GMen2613

55. Overrated: Caminito, Buenos Aires

Colorful buildings of Caminito in Buenos Aires

"Everything is massively overpriced, and if you venture out of the small triangle, it's not very safe. Stick to San Telmo and nicer neighborhoods like Recoleta, Palermo, and Belgrano."

— u/rivkasaurusrex

56. Underrated: Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

A fortress surrounded by blue water

"Lots of people visit the Florida Keys for vacation, but many don't know about Dry Tortugas National Park. To get there, you take a ferry from Key West, and it's so beautiful. You can explore the fort and snorkel in the crystal clear water."

— leahd472a94326

57. Underrated: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A golden bridge leading to a city

"It's usually overshadowed by Philadelphia, but Pittsburgh is severely underrated, in my opinion. The food scene is really good, and the arts and cultural districts are also very interesting. The Warhol Museum in particular is well worth a visit."

— TDiabeetus

58. Overrated: Montego Bay, Jamaica

A hillside town with colorful houses

"I recently went to Jamaica as part of a Caribbean cruise. Montego Bay, in particular, was very beautiful, but I felt like everything was a scam to take your money. I didn't feel safe anywhere I went, and every place we were taken on a tour required that we spend money on something. Despite the natural beauty, the whole country is treated like a trash can, and there was garbage everywhere. It was very sad to see."

— u/deleted

59. Underrated: Asheville, North Carolina

A cityscape at sunset

"If you like mountain towns, Asheville is a great little spot with lots to do, local bars, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the urban comforts, just outside of the city you can go skiing, snowboarding, and hiking."

  • The Northern United States' 7 Most Underrated Towns To Visit In 2024

Often overshadowed by the constant sunshine experienced in the southern portion of America, the Northern United States has long been hiding some of the most incredible towns offering hidden histories, outdoor adventures, and some small-town hospitality.

The Northern United States contains some of America’s largest metropolitan areas, such as New York City , Chicago , and Detroit , which have long served as popular tourist destinations for visitors from around the globe. However, the lesser-known side of things hides between these major tourist destinations. Whether you discover these towns by taking the wrong off-ramp or planning out weeks in advance, these seven underrated towns should sit atop your list of places to visit in 2024.

Lake Placid, New York

The Lake Placid Ski Lift in autumn

This scenic New York town hides amongst the towering Adirondack range and is home to some of the best outdoor adventures offered within America, regardless of the season.

With that being said, Lake Placid is particularly known for its world-class skiing and snowboarding opportunities. The town hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980. Visitors can explore the history of the Olympics by touring the many Olympic sites located throughout the town. Stop by the Lake Placid Olympic Center to witness where history was made or stand tall at the former Olympic Jumping Complex. Visitors can even shred some powder down the same runs that Olympians once sped down at Whiteface Mountain, one of the region's tallest mountains.

As the snow melts, the newly forested mountains provide perfect opportunities for visitors to get out and explore the Adirondacks. Begin your summit of nearby Mt. Van Hoevenberg to obtain one of the best panoramic views of Lake Placid. For the more casual hiker, Cobble Hill trails provide the same scenic beauty without the steep summits, which makes it the perfect place for a family outing.

New Buffalo, Michigan

Harbor entrance in New Buffalo, Michigan

Now, there are no hard feelings towards those who don’t necessarily associate pristine sandy beaches and crystal-clear water with the state of Michigan , but New Buffalo often surprises those who stumble upon this lakeside oasis.

Start your visit by setting up shop on the sandy dunes of New Buffalo City Beach. The beach is the perfect place to spend a hot summer day on the shores of Lake Michigan . If sitting on the sandy beaches of New Buffalo isn’t close enough to the water, then get out on the water itself by booking a sailing excursion with New Buffalo Sailing Excursions, which will take you out into the rolling waves of the lake.

There are also numerous must-see attractions within the town itself. Head over to the New Buffalo Art Gallery, which features works from local artists that help capture the town’s lakeside charm. Situated on the former grounds of the largest railroad in Michigan, The New Buffalo Railroad Museum showcases the railroad’s importance to the town and the region itself.

Big Fork, Montana

The extremely serene Flathead Lake, Montana

Whether you’re visiting during the snowfalls of winter, the blossoming of spring, or the falling leaves during autumn, Big Fork has more than enough to keep you busy regardless of the season.

There is no shortage of outdoor adventure in this scenic Montana town. Adventures range from shredding through the freshly fallen snow as a team of huskies pulls you after booking a dogsledding trip with Base Camp Bigfork dogsledding guides. Or, when the temperatures climb amid summer, take a scenic paddle on the open waters of Flathead Lake or experience a laidback trip down the Swan River.

If you prefer the relative comfort of air conditioning and heating, stay indoors and tour the many fine art galleries in the town. Explore the creative pieces at Art Fusion Gallery or a more traditional approach at Eric Thorsen’s Fine Art Gallery. If you truly want to experience local culture, put on your finest cowboy boots and head over to Bigfork Art & Cultural Center and schedule a weekly line dancing class.

Devil’s Lake, North Dakota

Downtown Devil’s Lake, North Dakota

Don’t let the town’s name scare you off. Devil’s Lake is as welcoming as any other town and offers a unique getaway that can’t be matched anywhere. Whether you are searching for a place to land the fish of a lifetime or explore the pioneer history of the great plains, Devil’s Lake has you covered.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid angler or a first-timer, Devil’s Lake has been named one of the top five fishing lakes in the US, meaning that your chances of reeling one in are pretty good. Schedule a fishing excursion with A and H Guide Service to show you the hotspots. If you prefer the stability of land, plan an outing at Grahams Island State Park, which features campsites, beaches, and hiking trails along Devil’s Lake’s shores.

The town also holds some fascinating historical attractions. Tour through a former outpost that once protected vital supplies across the Great Plains. The Fort Totten State Historic Site remains as it was in the late 1800s, and visitors can walk the grounds and immerse themselves in the past.

Cheboygan, Michigan

Cheboygan Crib Light in Cheboygan, Michigan.

Resting along the banks of Lake Huron , Cheboygan is only 120 km from the neighbors of the north in Canada . One of Cheboygan's biggest draws is undoubtedly the natural beauty, and those who visit capitalize on the town’s “under the radar” status. Days are best spent in Cheboygan by getting outdoors, so spend your days hiking through the forests as great outdoors as nearby state parks, such as Cheboygan State Park or Aloha State Park, which offer well-maintained trails and scenic views of Lake Huron.

Visitors can also entrench themselves in the fascinating history of not just Lake Huron but all the great lakes by visiting the Inland Waterway Historical Society Museum. Visitors can explore early relics of the brave sailors who voyaged across the Great Lakes and even better understand how vital shipping routes through the lakes remain today. Visit the town’s beacon of hope. The Cheboygan River Front Range Lighthouse has been guiding weary sailors to the safety of shore since its creation in 1880.

Stowe, Vermont

Fall colors in Stowe, Vermont

Despite being recognized as one of the premier destinations for skiers and snowboarders, Stowe has plenty of other attractions often overshadowed by the pristine ski havens nearby. Luckily, those who visit can experience unique attractions without the hustle and bustle of large crowds.

It’s worth noting that the town’s ability to provide high-quality winter experiences should not be understated. Prominent ski resorts such as Stowe Mountain Resort and Smugglers' Notch Resort offer plenty of trails suited for beginners and experts alike.

The town comes to life as the snow melts and dense forests become alive with vibrant green foliage. Trade in the ski boots for hiking boots, take to the trails and hike to the top of nearby Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. For those who want to stand atop Vermont’s highest peak but don’t want to break a sweat doing it, take a ride along the Gondola SkyRide, which will drop you off amidst the mountain tops of Vermont.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The beautiful town of Bar Harbor, Maine

You’ll want to bring your appetite to this coastal town as it is home to some of the freshest seafood in the world. Bar Harbor was founded in 1796 and has long been a place of salvation for weary seamen from the Atlantic Ocean .

Unsurprisingly, the town has over 220 years of maritime heritage that await your exploration. Head over to the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History to explore the town’s hidden histories and the natural wonders of Maine . If a museum experience isn’t your forte, get outdoors and venture into Acadia National Park , which features everything from woodlands to rocky beaches and even the towering Cadillac Mountain, one of the highest points within 25 miles of the eastern coastline.

After a long day of adventure, sit at the Bar Harbor town pier and enjoy a beverage and a plate of fresh seafood at the Eagle’s Nest as the sun sets on your day in Maine’s coastal retreat.

So, now that the new year is officially underway, and you have a refreshed number of vacation days, consider taking a chance on the smaller towns with big excitement that hide throughout America’s Northern states. Whether you’re considering taking a weekend vacation or planning a cross-country road trip, add these seven underrated towns to the top of your travel destination lists.
