2 Day Abu Dhabi Itinerary with Unique Experiences

2 Day Abu Dhabi Itinerary with Unique Experiences

While most visitors to the UAE visit Dubai, Abu Dhabi offers the traveller the perfect mix of fabulous experiences and impressive cultural landmarks. Where Dubai is over-the-top in a fun way, Abu Dhabi holds more of a cultural feel that brings it back to its roots. We found Abu Dhabi to be more peaceful and traditional than Dubai and it also has better beaches. It's still lavish, but more discreetly so.

Your 2 days in Abu Dhabi will be filled with fun experiences. Our 2 Day Abu Dhabi itinerary includes the best natural beaches to visit, what area to stay in, unique places to eat and stunning cultural sites you don't want to miss.

If you're looking for entertainment and over-the-top experiences however, Dubai may be a better choice for you. See our 2 Day Dubai Itinerary .

Best time to visit Abu Dhabi

Blue boat in sand and lifeguard under a white umbrella on Soul Beach in Abu Dhabi

The best time to visit Abu Dhabi is between October - May. Starting June, highs start reaching 40°C (140°F). Eek! We visited at the end of May and felt like it was getting close to the max temperature we could handle. We can't imagine what it's like during the hottest months of July and August.

January is Abu Dhabi's coldest month, but highs still reach 24°C (75°F).

Is 2 days enough in Abu Dhabi?

How to get around Abu Dhabi

Skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi lit up at night

Taxis are the best way to get around Abu Dhabi. The city is quite sprawled out geographically over different islands, so you'll want to set aside budget for taxi costs. Our taxi drivers always used their meter.

Uber is actually slightly more expensive than taxis in Abu Dhabi. It was very easy to find taxis everywhere we went, but it's nice knowing you can call an Uber if needed.

✔️ Top tip: bring cash for the taxis. Although card payments are becoming more popular for taxis in Abu Dhabi, our drivers still asked us to pay cash.

Best area to stay in Abu Dhabi

St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort pool amenities overlooking the sea

For your 2 days in Abu Dhabi, we recommend staying on Saadiyat Island. This island is home to the city's natural white-sand beaches facing the open sea. From Saadiyat Island, it's about a 15 minute drive to downtown.

Our top beachfront resort picks on Saadiyat Island:

  • St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort
  • Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas
  • Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Villas
  • Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort

Top budget tip: If Abu Dhabi's beachfront resorts are out of your price range, we recommend staying downtown around Corniche Beach. There are public beaches on Saadiyat Island, so you don't have to stay at a beachfront hotel to access them.

What to Do in Abu Dhabi in 2 Days

1. Swim on Saadiyat Island's pristine natural beaches

unique travel abu dhabi photos

White-sand beach on Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat Island has the best beaches in Abu Dhabi. With its pristine white sand, turquoise water and far-reaching sea views, it doesn't get much better than this! It was the warmest sea water I've ever felt in my life.

When comparing Saadiyat Island's beaches to Corniche Beach downtown, Corniche Beach didn't feel as wild since you see buildings and islands across from it.

If you're not staying at a beachfront hotel on Saadiyat Island, there are public beaches you can access with entrance fees. Check out Kai Beach or Soul Beach . Saadiyat Beach Club is another option if you want access to more amenities like swimming pools and private cabanas.

2. Eat a delicious Lebanese lunch at Beirut Su Mer

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Beirut Su Mer

Don't miss out on eating delicious Middle Eastern flavours. One restaurant that stood out for us was Beirut Su Mer, serving authentic Lebanese dishes by the sea. With a Bib Gourmand designation from the Michelin Guide, you know you're getting excellent dishes for a good value. Make your reservation online through Google.

3. Walk through Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace of the UAE

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Qasr Al Watan Presidential Palace

It's the inside of the palace that you really want to see here. Its grand spaces with high ceilings, giant chandeliers, exquisite marble and ornate details are spectacular. It was tough to pick just three photos for above!

We liked how we could walk through the palace at our own pace. The printed descriptions were enough to understand what was going on.

4. Walk through the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental

Another Arabian beauty, Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental is one of the most alluring hotels you'll see in Abu Dhabi. Driving up to it at night, we felt like characters in an Abu Dhabi version of the Hitchcock film, The Man Who Knew Too Much.

We happened to walk through the Emirates Palace since we were dining at Hakkasan and realized that seeing this hotel is something you don't want to miss. We saw a hotel guest who seriously looked like a Queen.

✔️ Top tip: Afterwards, walk towards the main street from the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental to see a view of the five Etihad Towers lighting up at night.

5. Eat traditional Emirati cuisine

Authentic chicken and rice Emirati dish from Meylas

Try the UAE's traditional local fare called Emirati cuisine. Meylas may be a bit out of the way in an unassuming area, but it's worth it to try their authentic Emirati recipes that started out as one of the first food trucks in the country. It's great value and the portions are big.

✔️ Top tip: Meylas is only a 10-minute drive away from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, so they are nice activities to combine.

8. See the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

While the Presidential Palace is the most impressive from the inside, it's the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque that is the most impressive from the outside. It's a marvel of architectural grandeur with its pristine white domes, elegant minarets and intricate designs drawn from Islamic architectural styles. As we drove towards it in our taxi, we gasped when we saw it in the distance.

Visiting Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the best free things to do in Abu Dhabi. Make sure you sign up for your free ticket online , so you're not rushing to do it when there.

It takes some time to walk from the underground mall through the checkpoints to the mosque. However, after you are done, there is a free shuttle that takes you back to the underground mall.

✔️ Top tip: they have a very strict dress code - see the official dress code guide before you go.

If you only have time for the Presidential Palace or the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , we recommend the Presidential Palace. The mosque had bigger crowds and you're outside in the heat in long clothes for much of the time. Although the outside is spectacular of the mosque, the interior of the Presidential Palace blew us away. The dress code also isn't strict at the Presidential Palace. They just recommend that your knees and shoulders are covered.

6. Treat yourself to a fabulous restaurant in the Michelin Guide

Orange Peking duck and a green cocktail inside the dimly lit Hakkasan Abu Dhabi

With world-top chefs and a mix of cultures, Abu Dhabi has many restaurants that have earned themselves a coveted spot in the Michelin Guide. Treat yourself to one of these fabulous restaurants that has incredible food and a unique interior and atmosphere.

We shared the Peking duck at Hakkasan, a sexy and atmospheric restaurant known for its Chinese cuisine.

See the list of restaurants in Abu Dhabi in the Michelin Guide.

Sip cocktails and people-watch at Zuma

Men in white robes around a white table in Zuma Abu Dhabi

We were intrigued by Zuma since it's one of the hottest restaurant chains around the world. What we didn't expect, however, was that it was going to turn into the cultural experience it did.

One thing you'll notice in Abu Dhabi is that you see a lot of different cultures. This makes sense since about 90% of the country's population is made up of expats. Well, at Zuma, it was the most Emiratis we saw in one place. As we took the glass elevator down to the bottom floor, we saw round tables filled with men in white robes and women in black abayas, all enjoying an evening out. With a live DJ playing house music with an Arabic touch, the atmosphere felt as though we had been granted exclusive access to a party.

And unfortunately what comes with exclusive parties comes with break-the-bank prices. The Japanese izakaya-style restaurant serves high-quality dishes, but the prices are exorbitantly high. We ordered the cheapest things on the menu, one of them being a shrimp tempura roll for about $22 USD, and burst out laughing when it came and was only 5 pieces! It made it even more fascinating watching plate after plate come out for the guests around us knowing how expensive they were.

Instead, we recommend sitting at the bar and ordering a couple cocktails so you can enjoy the fun atmosphere and people-watch. Zuma takes walk-ins for drinks and snacks at the bar.

9. Make the most of your hotel amenities

Blonde girl in black bathing suit sitting on a cabana chair with poolside bites

Abu Dhabi spares no expense when it comes to its hotel amenities. Make sure you carve out some time to utilize the facilities. We loved playing Scrabble and ordering pool snacks and pina coladas.

Abu Dhabi 2 Day Itinerary

  • → Walk through the impressive Qasr Al Watan Presidential Palace
  • → Eat a delicious Lebanese lunch with sea views at Beruit Su Mer
  • → Go for a swim and lounge at the beach on Saadiyat Island
  • → Treat yourself to a fabulous restaurant in the Michelin Guide
  • → See the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
  • → Eat traditional Emirati cuisine at Meylas for lunch
  • → Relax at your hotel and use the amenities. Order poolside bites for dinner and watch the sunset.
  • → Dress up for an evening out and walk through the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental
  • → Sip cocktails and people-watch at Zuma

5 helpful tips for your trip to Abu Dhabi

Red cocktail in a coupe glass on a blue bar table

1. Some of the most impressive restaurants and best people-watching experiences are at very expensive restaurants. A budget hack is to visit the restaurant's bar instead and order a couple cocktails.

2. Take taxis since they are cheaper than Uber.

3. Bring cash for taxis.

4. Look at this official dress code guide before taking your chances trying to enter the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

5. If you're not staying at a beachfront hotel, visit one of the natural white-sand beaches on Saadiyat Island. Saadiyat Beach Club is also a great way to access amenities like outdoor pools and pool cabanas without spending high beach resort prices.

6 Unique Experiences You Can Only Have in Abu Dhabi

Explore the delights of Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the exciting and vibrant capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Buzzing with activity, the city prides itself on offering exclusive experiences to travellers. With a wide variety of opportunities to cater to a range of interests, here are our top picks of Abu Dhabi’s unique adventures.

Step into 1970s uae.

A trip to Abu Dhabi would not be complete without a trip to Heritage Village. Set against the backdrop of an oasis surrounded by palm trees and tents, travellers can immerse themselves in life in the emirate prior to the discovery of oil. From campfires with local coffee to artisans presenting traditional crafts such as pottery, this free attraction involves the reconstruction of scenes native to the Bedouins. Visitors can also meander through the souq and purchase handmade items such as soaps, jewellery, clothes and spices, while Bedouin women offer henna tattoos.

The dichotomy between the high-rise sky scrapers around the village and the goat hair tents within its walls demonstrates the whirlwind journey undertaken by the UAE in less than fifty years. Photos showcasing this development are also presented alongside artefacts of the old UAE, allowing a cultural look into the fast-developing nation.

Get a glimpse into the life of Emirati Bedouins prior to the discovery of oil

The highest peak in Abu Dhabi , Jebel Hafeet is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most fascinating historical exhibits in the UAE. A hub of archaeological findings, the site has seen over 500 tombs discovered and excavated, revealing exciting clues about the lives of inhabitants between 3200 and 2700 BC. Skeletons, pearls, bronze works and ceramic objects are just some of the incredible remnants of past civilisations.

Journeying up Jebel Hafeet involves a scenic drive with stunning views of the landscape and parking bays to allow you to stop and take pictures. There are also hot springs, pools and Jacuzzis along the way to refresh and cool down. A café and the Mercure Grand Hotel at the peak offer opportunities to refresh and have a meal.

Check out the world’s largest truck

The Emirates National Auto Museum exhibits the private car collection of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nayhan, also known as ‘The Rainbow Sheikh.’ With over 200 cars, including a collection of rainbow-coloured Mercedes S Class, hence his moniker, and the world’s largest truck, the museum is a hit with car enthusiasts and families alike. Housing a great mix of classic cars, rare vehicles, military tanks and international automobiles such as New York yellow cabs, the museum is definitely worth a visit on your trip to Abu Dhabi.

See the world’s largest truck at the Emirates National Auto Museum

Witness one of the deadliest birds of prey

Falcons are the focal point of the UAE ’s emblem, demonstrating their fundamental role in Emirati history. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, the world’s first institution geared towards the care and welfare of falcons, offers the ‘Falcon World Tour.’ Increasing awareness and education about falcons, the tour highlights the role played by the birds throughout history, from aiding Bedouin hunters in the past to representing the nation in contemporary times. Visitors can explore a museum which explains the art of falconry and exhibits key tools used in the craft. Top off your visit by watching falcons flying free, and benefit from a unique photo opportunity with a falcon on your arm.

Ride the world’s fastest rollercoaster

We obviously have to mention the Formula Rossa which, with a top speed of 240km/h (149 miles/h), cinches the title of the world’s fastest rollercoaster. The ride is designed to simulate the experiences of Formula One drivers and the delighted screams of visitors certainly reverberate like the sounds of a Grand Prix . As an integral part of the Formula One racing experiences offered in Abu Dhabi, the ride invites you to brave speeds faster than those of a race car. Visitors should not leave the capital without checking this off their bucket list.

Will you brave the legendary Formula Rossa at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi?

Be a Formula One driver for the day

This unique experience at the Yas Marina Circuit offers the opportunity to get behind the wheel and test out the famous race track. Suited in official racing overalls with exclusive access to drivers’ backstage areas, you can enjoy an immersive glimpse into the lives of Formula One Drivers. With options such as the Aston Martin GT4 and the Ferrari 458 GT, racing enthusiasts are truly spoilt for choice.

Qasr Al Watan at night

8 unique experiences in Abu Dhabi

A trip to Abu Dhabi isn’t just about discovering the rich cultural heritage of the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

For discerning travelers, Abu Dhabi is a destination brimming with unique encounters, where spectacular hotels and off-grid resorts provide a base from which to explore gleaming malls, bustling marinas, and some of the best restaurants.

Historical treasures at the UAE Presidential Palace

The sprawling walled compound at the western tip of Abu Dhabi city is home to a collection of magnificent governmental buildings, none more impressive than the UAE Presidential Palace: Qasr Al Watan. Guided tours afford visitors a glimpse of highlights including a collection of Arabic literature in the Qasr Al Watan Library, artifacts and scrolls in the House of Knowledge and the artful mosaics of The Great Hall. To experience the flavor of a royal lifestyle, check in at the neighboring Emirates Palace, a lavish hotel set within acres of landscaped gardens.

Sunset cruising in a traditional dhow boat

Traditional wooden dhow boats offer a glimpse of times gone by , when Abu Dhabi was a hub for the pearl diving industry and hundreds of these wooden vessels plied the waters of the Arabian Gulf. Today, visitors can sample a flavor of life onboard during a sunset cruise. Relish succulent dates and aromatic Arabic coffee while the sun turns the skyline to liquid gold, then head below deck for dinner and traditional music. After dessert, reclining on a pile of cushions and gazing up at the night sky provides a fairy-tale ending to this quintessential Arabian experience.

the traditional wooden dhow boat in the Arabian Gulf

Yas Marina Circuit driving experience

The streets of Abu Dhabi are filled with beautiful vehicles, from customized 4x4s to limited-edition supercars. High-speed thrills await at Yas Marina Circuit , home of the annual Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, each November. During the rest of the year, auto enthusiasts can book driving experiences with instruction from the pros, testing their mettle in a Formula 3000 racing car that will hit 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. Alternatively, explore a garage filled with high-performance cars from prestigious marques, including Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Mercedes, all ready for their ‘Fast & Furious’ moment.

a single-seat race car at Yas Marina Circuit

World-class dining, global flavors

The inhabitants of the UAE have been exchanging goods, ideas, and recipes with their neighbors since time immemorial. As a result, the Emirati kitchen presents a smorgasbord of flavors, with the influences of Mediterranean, Indian, and Levantine cuisine evident in many local dishes. Today, visitors can find food from all corners of the globe in Abu Dhabi’s collection of world-class dining venues: traditional local fare reimagined by creative Emirati chefs; regional flavors from across the Middle East and Africa; and menus inspired by the greatest kitchens of Europe and Asia.

luqaimat desert

Wildlife, desert, and beaches at off-grid resorts

Day trips from the city are a great way to sample Abu Dhabi’s natural landscapes. However, spending a couple of nights at a destination resort allows visitors to explore the emirate from a different perspective and get closer to the spirit of Arabian culture. The options are myriad: experience the serenity of the desert at a palatial escape in the Empty Quarter; feel the sand between your toes at a private island retreat; or come face to face with Arabian oryx and other wildlife on a desert island nature reserve.

Saadiyat Island beaches, recreation, and culture

Ringed by white sand beaches and clear blue water, Saadiyat Island feels worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of downtown Abu Dhabi. Here, some of the emirate’s finest beach resorts offer a serene escape from the city accompanied by delectable dining, soothing spas, and a tempting selection of activities and excursions. While culture vultures sate their thirst for knowledge at Louvre Abu Dhabi or the Manarat Al Saadiyat arts and cultural center, active visitors can book a tee time on the spectacular 18-hole championship golf course or head out for a paddle around the mangroves.

beach at Saadiyat Island

Luxury shopping and fine dining at The Galleria Al Maryah Island

Spread over 1.8 million square feet of marble-clad space, The Galleria Al Maryah Island is a shopper’s paradise with more than 400 stores. The boutiques of international luxury brands and homegrown UAE designers line the stylish boulevards of this retail haven, which recently unveiled a new expansion including a 70-restaurant dining enclave designed by New York architect David Rockwell. These new additions complement The Dining Collection: 16 high-profile restaurants spread along a waterfront promenade, flanked on either side by two of the most prestigious hotels in the city.

Exquisite jewelry at Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and Gold Centre

Before Abu Dhabi became a global dynamic city filled with investment firms, designer brands, and luxury car dealerships, locals were limited in how they could invest (and flaunt) their wealth. One reliable commodity was gold, artfully crafted into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Today, locals and visitors alike can pick up a glimmering souvenir or statement piece at Madinat Zayed Gold Centre, where rows of stores with radiant window displays brim with gold jewelry encrusted with gems and precious stones.

Map of Abu Dhabi with Abu Dhabi Tourist Attractions

To help you plan your itinerary for Abu Dhabi, here are all of the places to see in Abu Dhabi and places to go in Abu Dhabi noted on a map.

Like all cities, to save you time and energy it’s best to look at the map and plan to visit attractions in one part of the city together and then focus on another section on another day.

In this Abu Dhabi travel blog, I also help you group together and plan your days like recommending seeing the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Jubail Mangrove Park together as they are both on one side of the city with not much else around and there’s no point in going over there twice in one trip.

1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Without a doubt, the top place to visit in Abu Dhabi is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque because it’s stunning and one-of-a-kind but also because it’s the iconic Abu Dhabi photo and photo spot!

The mosque is free to enter so get this on your list of places to visit in Abu Dhabi for free and the mosque is open all week for most of the day.

Here’s a post I wrote for we are travel girls a few years ago about how to visit Sheikh Zayed Mosque and what to expect.

On this note, if you are female, also be sure to read my post on what to wear in Abu Dhabi which will also help you with what to wear in Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque.

I do advise going to the mosque just before sunset and then you’ll get to see it in daytime golden hour and also at night, plus you’ll be there for sunset prayer and hear the call to prayer which is truly magical.

Scroll down to number 26 on this list of Abu Dhabi things to do to see where to get an amazing photo of the mosque from where you can get the whole mosque in the frame with water in front.

2. Qasr AlWatan

Qasr in Arabic means palace which is a word you’ll get used to in Abu Dhabi. So Qasr AlWatan means ‘Palace of the Nations ‘.

This is high on my list of things to do in Abu Dhabi because it is absolutely incredible to visit and easily one of the top Abu Dhabi attractions . I could not get over the grander here!

You have to purchase a ticket online in advance or at the door and a bus will take you a short journey to the palace. Here you can walk around the huge courtyard before going inside.

This palace in Abu Dhabi was only opened in 2015 and it’s a working presidential palace so it’s in incredible condition and built with a mix of modern and traditional Arabic architecture.

You might have seen photos of people standing in a gold art piece in Abu Dhabi and this is into Qasr AlWatan so if you’re searching for Abu Dhabi Instagram spots , this is one of the best ones!

3. Qasr AlHosn

Another palace to visit in Abu Dhabi is Qasr AlHosn , this has a very different look to Qasr AlWatan but it’s fascinating to visit!

This is a fort and it’s actually the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi .

Abu Dhabi has grown rapidly fast and visiting Qasr AlHosn is a great way to get an idea of what this part of Abu Dhabi looked like before it developed as we see it today.

The museum is inside in air-con so it’s one of the good indoor activities in Abu Dhabi and then you go outside to see some more parts of the fort.

I really liked the square that Qasr AlHosn is located in, there are a few cafes around so be sure to combine this stop with a coffee or lunch on your Abu Dhabi itinerary,

And if you are Muslim, there are really amazing prayer rooms by The Espresso Lab which is a minute away from Qasr AlHosn.

Look for the best flights to Abu Dhabi here!

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different dates and routes to help me find the best flight at the best price!

Open Skyscanner by clicking here and search for the best flights as you read this post.

4. Gold Coffee or Ice Cream at Emirates Palace

The Emirates Palace is so iconic. I’d go as far as staying it’s the second most iconic place in Abu Dhabi after the Sheikh Zayed mosque so you have to add this to your list of places to go in Abu Dhabi .

The hotel is world-famous and a luxury 5-star hotel and thankfully you don’t have to stay here to visit.

You can enter the Emirates Palace for free , have a look around and dine in one of the cafes or restaurants.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace from outside with flag

I recommend going to Le Cafe as I did which is on the ground floor of the hotel and no reservations are needed. Here you can order a variety of drinks including a Gold Cappuccino , a Gold Matcha Latte and Gold covered Ice Cream .

You don’t have to book a ticket in advance but if you want to so it’s all paid for, or as a gift for someone else you can book this Le Cafe package which includes the Gold Cappuccino, and a Coffee or Tea and a slice of cake.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace Gold Matcha Latte with dates

They are priced higher than usual drinks and they don’t taste that different but how often can you say that you have drank or eaten gold! Only in Abu Dhabi, that’s what I say and why I had to add it to my own things to do in Abu Dhabi!

5. Louvre Abu Dhabi

Yes, the Louvre is not just in Paris! There is one in Abu Dhabi too and I loved visiting it!

I’m not hugely into art galleries and museums but the impressive architecture of the Louvre Abu Dhabi was enough to impress me.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, inside The Louvre with water around the museum

As far as Abu Dhabi tourist attractions go, the Louvre is high on the list.

It is surrounded by some lovely and tranquil gardens with an amazing view of the city skyline. Go inside and you are taken through a maze of art and sculpture pieces from around the world and at every turn, you get a glimpse of the water surrounding the museum.

Click here to buy tickets in advance which you need to do!

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, The Louvre from outside with blue water

At the end, you go outside and can sit by the water, have a meal or coffee in the restaurant and take in impressive dome structure from the inside .

I went for lunch at Aptitude Cafe after my visit to the Louvre which has an amazing view of the building, a great vibe and sells healthy drinks and meals so I really recommend it!

6. Kayaking at The Louvre

There are 3 great options for kayaking in Abu Dhabi and one of them is at the Louvre which you might not have expected, I certainly didn’t until searching for what to do in Abu Dhabi.

Sea-Hawks Water Sports can take you out onto the Arabian Sea for 1 hour to see the architecture of the building from another perspective and to learn more about the museum.

Children as young as 6 years old can go on this although until 12 years old they must be accompanied by an adult so its one of the great things to do in Abu Dhabi with kids.

7. Kayaking in Eastern Mangrove National Park

For a super relaxing but educational and interesting kayaking experience in Abu Dhabi, check out this 2 hour kayaking trip in Eastern Mangrove National Park .

This mangrove is thriving in around 60 species including turtles and fish and this kayaking trip in Abu Dhabi allows you to get close to the mangroves, learn about the importance of them to Abu Dhabi city and you’ll stop halfway through at a beach and can swim if you want.

This is the longest kayaking trip you’ll get in Abu Dhabi, below I give you the experience of kayaking in Jubail Mangrove Park which I did but this was just a 1-hour trip whereas this is 2 hours!

Click here to make a booking as you have to book in advance

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, couple kayaking in Abu Dhabi

8. Kayaking in Jubail Mangrove Park

The third opportunity to kayak in Abu Dhabi is at Jubail Mangrove Park. Jubail is another one of the islands in Abu Dhabi but it is connected by a bridge.

This actually works well paired with a trip to the Louvre as they are on the same side of the city. I went to The Louvre at 12:00 and then to Jubail Mangrove at 15:00.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, kayak shop at Jubail Mangrove Park

The kayaking experience is 1 hour and you go out with a group and leader. We didn’t kayak that far and we thought we’d kayak through more overgrown mangroves whereas most of it was in open water but we did stop at a sand island halfway through before heading back and it was a really unique thing to do in Abu Dhabi so we enjoyed it and our guide was great to chat to and helpful.

It’s also one of the good things to do in Abu Dhabi for families due to the ease of the kayaking and as a way to get out of the city and into nature.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, Jubail Mangrove Park kayaking

9. Jubail Mangrove Park Board Walk

Jubail Mangrove Park is the first self-contained educational, nature and leisure destination  of it’s kind in Abu Dhabi and has been designed to make people aware of the important ecological function of the mangrove which protects the Abu Dhabi coastline.

Being here is so calming and you can’t believe the city is so close.

There is a visitor centre which is where the boardwalk starts and the kayaking starts. The boardwalk is a short walk alongside the mangroves in a relaxing setting and is great for photo opportunities. There’s also a cafe at the visitor centre so you can stay and take in the views a little longer after your walk or kayaking session.

10. Evening Desert safari

Can you visit the UAE and not go on a desert safari?? Not really!

A desert safari is one of the fun things to do in Abu Dhabi ! Yes, it is very touristy but it’s also a fun afternoon and evening and easy because you don’t have to think about a thing, the guides sort everything!

We got picked up at our hotel at 14:00 by our jeep guide and drove 1 hour into the Abu Dhabi dessert, we let down the tires a bit, met the other jeeps and the thrill of dune bashing started!

This is the most highly rated desert safari tour in Abu Dhabi and it’s a great price. Bookings are needed in advance so click here to check availability!

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, jeep dune bashing

We drove up and down the dunes dune bashing for about an hour or so stopping to see some camels on the way too before arriving at our camp where we could go on the quad bikes, sandboarding or just walk along the dunes until sunset and then enjoyed a buffet and some entertainment.

Both my husband and I had been on a desert safari in Dubai and we nearly cancelled this activity as it was on our last day in Abu Dhabi and the last of our things to do in Abu Dhabi but we went and we enjoyed it so much, it’s touristy and not an authentic dessert experience but you have to enjoy it for what it is!

Here are more highly rated desert safaris in Abu Dhabi to book in advance:

11. Morning Sunrise Desert Safari

If you don’t have time for an evening safari on your Abu Dhabi holiday then you can do a morning safari or perhaps you’ve done an evening one before, this will offer you a new experience!

This is a highly rated and reviewed morning Safari for a great price which includes dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride.

A positive of a morning safari is benefitting from cooler temperatures , especially if visiting Abu Dhabi in summer.

12. Abu Dhabi Hop On Hop Off Bus

Abu Dhabi city is big and all Abu Dhabi tourist attractions are quite far from each other. As with many cities around the world, the best and easiest way to see them all is a hop-on-hop-off bus !

This bus will take you to the best Abu Dhabi tourist spots and give you information about the city on the way.

Some people think these are too touristy but honestly, they are convenient and great value for money.

Getting around Abu Dhabi on your own means hiring a car and driving or getting taxis but communication with taxi drivers can be hard and waiting for taxis each time and the cost of them do add up.

Check out tickets for the Abu Dhabi hop-on hop-off bus here!

13. Sunbathe or Watersports on Saadiyat Beach

There are so many Abu Dhabi activities that it’s easy to forget that you can just head to the beach and chill in Abu Dhabi too!

One of the best beaches in Abu Dhabi and most desirable beaches is Saadiyat Beach which is a long stretch of white sand perfect for sunbathing and doing eco-friendly watersports . There is also a range of food and leisure outlets to help you give you a beach day in Abu Dhabi!

14. Saadiyat Beach Club

15. Observation Deck at 300

For an amazing view of Abu Dhabi head to Observation Deck at 300 ! When planning your Abu Dhabi itinerary this pairs well with visiting the Emirates Palace, Qasr AlWatan and the Founders Memorial as it is close to them all!

16. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Easily one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi and famous Abu Dhabi attractions is Ferrari World!

This is the only Ferrari branded theme park in the whole world located in the heart of Yas Island with the world’s fastest roller coaster because this is the UAE and Ferrari working together!

It’s great for families with young children and adults to visit on their own because it’s not all about the rides, there are shows, shopping and you can even drive your own Ferrari !

There are so many things to do on Yas Island which I’ll go into next in this list of things to do in Abu Dhabi!

17. Cycle Around Yas Marina Circuit for free

One of my friends told me about this, they went with their kids in the evening time and said it was great, especially in the cooler evening weather. Plus, how often can you bike around a real F1 track ?

Yas Marina Circuit is open for cyclers, joggers and walkers to go around the track in a clockwise direction. This is actually one of the free things to do in Abu Dhabi as in partnership with Abu Dhabi cycling cub complimentary bikes are available for adults and children from ComYas village.

If you go in the evening, get there early as there are limited bikes available.

Read more here about hiring bikes

18. Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi

A waterpark is one of the best activities in Abu Dhabi in the hot months so welcome to Yas Waterworld located on Yas Island.

This waterpark is home to 45 rides, slides and attractions and has something for every water lover!

With 29 state of the art rides and lots of famous names like Scooby-do, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Tom and Jerry you’re bound to have a memorable day out by yourself or with the kids.

20. Yas Mall

I was searching for the best shopping mall in Abu Dhab i and there are not that many impressive shopping malls to be honest, not like Dubai with fountains and aquariums inside but Yas Mall is the largest shopping mall in Abu Dhabi and offers a great experience with all the shops you could ever want and plenty of food options.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, yas mall

21. Yas Bay

Sometimes in countries in the Gulf, you just want to walk and it can be hard to find areas to walk through.

Yas Bay is a great place to come to get some food, have a walk and see what takes your fancy. No need to book any attraction tickets in Abu Dhabi here just enjoy this waterfront leisure destination .

22. Yas Island Sightseeing Cruise

As you can see above, there are so many places to visit in Yas Island and Yas Island attractions and to see them all at a relaxed pace, why not take a sightseeing cruise in a traditional dhow boat?

This Yas Island sightseeing cruise leaves from Yas Marina and sails the waterways around Yas Island.

Check out the tour and book tickets here!

23. Climbing & Indoor Skydiving at CLYMB

Holidays are for trying new things and the UAE tries to do everything as the ‘best in the world’ ‘the biggest in the world’ ‘the highest in the world’, so at CLYMB located on Yas Island, you can do an indoor skydive in the worlds biggest indoor flight chamber as well as indoor climbing.

Again, this is one of the great indoor things to do in Abu Dhabi if it’s getting too hot for you outside!

24. Sir Bani Yas Safari

Earlier in this list of things to do in Abu Dhabi I mentioned a desert safari which actually had nothing to do with animals but this is a safari in Abu Dhabi that does!

Sir Bani Yas Safari gives a unique opportunity to see wildlife roam free in a protected environment off the coast of Abu Dhabi on Sir Bani Yas Island. Drive around in a 4×4 in search of some of the 17,000 animals including Arabian Oryx, ostriches, giraffes, hyenas and cheetahs.

If you are still planning your Abu Dhabi itinerary and accommodation, you can actually stay on Sir Bani Yas Island in 5-star accommodation !

This is definitely one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi and the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi, especially as a family!

25. Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey

This is one of the Abu Dhabi things to do I missed and I’m really gutted about it so please try and do it for me!

Take a 90-minute boat ride on a traditional pearling dhow boat to learn about the history of pearling and how this contributed to the growth of the UAE.

It’s a lovely experience where you get to sit on Arabian cushions and try Arabic coffee and dates with your guide.

The trip leaves from the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Abu Dhabi Hotel which is a beautiful hotel and sight to see itself!

26. Speedboat Tour around Mangrove National Park

If kayaking isn’t your thing as mentioned earlier in this list of things to do in Abu Dhabi and you want some adrenaline, check out this self-drive speedboat tour around Mangrove National Park !

27. Etihad Modern Art Gallery

If you enjoy art and art galleries then the Etihad Modern Art Gallery must be on your list of places to visit in Abu Dhabi for art.

This is a unique art gallery with modern art by local and international artists.

28. Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

You may think that wetlands and the desert landscape of Abu Dhabi don’t go together and neither does it go with the city landscape but there are wetlands in Abu Dhabi!

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve was once a coastal salt flat but it has now flourished into natural and man-made lake where many species can flourish, including flamingos !

There are 2 self-guided walking trails (1.5 kilometres or 3 kilometres) which are free but there are no toilet or food facilities so come prepared for this and enjoy the serenity!

29. Al Wathba Salt Lake

If you’ve been searching photos of Abu Dhabi on Instagram, you might have seen some photos with bright green water and people posing by them, these are the salt lakes in Abu Dhabi also known as long Salt lakes .

They are man-made lakes on either side of a road filled with green water and encrusted by salt which has also formed into circles in places giving it even more of an interesting look.

You will need your own transport to get here and it might be on the tricker side to find. Of course, please do be respectful as this is not a designated tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi so there is no one to clean up after you.

30. Abu Dhabi Aquarium

Abu Dhabi Aquarium is a great place to visit with kids and a great indoor activity in Abu Dhabi and because this is the UAE you know this is going to be one of the best and most immersive aquariums you’ll go to!

Click here to book tickets in advance!

31. Wahat Al Karama

Wahat Al Karama is a tribute that honours the Emirati martyrs who sacrificed their lives in service of their country and a lovely memorial to see in the city.

It is located opposite the Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque and if you are wondering where and how people often get an amazing shot of the mosque with water in front and often with them stood or sat down with the whole mosque in front of them?? That’s here!

32. Marsa Mina Food Trucks

The weather in the evening in Abu Dhabi can be lovely and what better way to enjoy it than choosing food from a huge range of food trucks at Marsa Mina!

Actually, a lot more is on offer at Marsa Mina! It’s a maritime-themed waterfront destination open all day serving family-friendly dishes in various food trucks and there are shops and shows around to keep everyone entertained.

If you are stuck for something to do, searching whats on at Marsa Mina is a great way to find out things to do in Abu Dhabi today!

33. Founders Memorial

The Founders Memorial is one of the new Abu Dhabi attractions that only opened in 2018 . It is a cultural attraction to celebrate the life and values of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , the founder of the UAE and also known as the Father of the Nation.

It only requires a quick visit on your itinerary for Abu Dhabi and is best explored with the Qasr AlWatan Emirates Palace or a Corniche walk because it is close to all of these.

The main thing to see is a piece of artwork featuring a three-dimensional portrait of Sheikh Zayed .

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, founders memorial constellation of Sheikh Zayed's head

On first appearance, it’s hard to work out its significance but I went into the small founders memorial museum and paid a small fee to watch a video on its creation of it where I realised that 1,327 geometric shapes create a constellation that looks like Sheikh Zayed’s head and when you can see this in the artwork after, it’s pretty impressive.

At night it lights up so that’s a good time to visit and one of the good things to do in Abu Dhabi at night and there are a few gardens surrounding to relax in.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, founders memorial museum inside

34. The Old Souk

It’s always great to visit a souk in Middle Eastern countries on holiday and despite how modern Abu Dhabi is, there is still the chance to visit a traditional souk.

The Old Souk in Abu Dhabi is the oldest market in Abu Dhabi and is great to visit if you’re looking for Arabic spices, jewellery or even home decor bits but it’s equally great to visit even if you are just window shopping.

35. The Gold Souk

Located in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre but also on Google Maps as Gold Souk Abu Dhabi is… the old souk in Abu Dhabi!

This is not a traditional market as you might expect, for that, you have to visit the Old Souk which is in a different part of the city, it’s inside a fairly modern shopping mall and there are many individual stores within here.

If you are looking for some Gold you can browse the shop windows easily before going in and it does have a less intimidating feeling than perhaps a traditional market does where you’re sometimes not sure if you’re being ripped off or not.

However, if you’re not in the market for gold, there’s no point in adding this to your Abu Dhabi sightseeing plan.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, inside gold souk Abu Dhabi

How to get the best flights??

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different destinations and different dates for the best price and route!

For example, I type in ‘everywhere’ in the destination if I have fixed dates and want to find the best flights on those dates on Skyscanner.

And if I have a set destination I’ll look at the ‘month view’ to check the cheapest days to fly in that month!

36. Walk along The Corniche

The Middle East loves a corniche. This is a long stretch of path than runs down the water’s edge where lots of people come together to have picnics, eat, take their kids to the playgrounds, and walk and run.

Usually, the corniche comes alive at night when the temperature is cooler and I definitely recommend taking a late-night walk along here, it’s a great way to get a feel for local life as lots of locals will be there too.

I walked along here at about 10:00. pm on my own and felt totally safe too.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Corniche at night

37. Activities on Hudayriyat Island

What’s incredible about Abu Dhabi is the range of areas and places to go in Abu Dhabi. Hudayriyat Island is one of those areas.

It’s connected to the main island of Abu Dhabi by a bridge so it’s easy to get there. There are a range of sports activities available like a bike park, skate park, cycling track, tennis courts, beach for swimming and even an obstacle course.

So get your sportswear on, head over here and see what you can do! This is definitely one of the great places to visit in Abu Dhabi with kids and as a family as there is plenty to keep them busy!

Abu Dhabi Day Trips:

Abu Dhabi is a great base to see more of the UAE from, here are some day trips from Abu Dhabi you can do and add to your Abu Dhabi itinerary!

I did a day trip to Al-Ain from Abu Dhabi which I absolutely loved and really recommend.

To get allll the information, read my full post: 8 Things To Do In Al Ain | Day Trip From Abu Dhabi or Dubai!

Al-Ain is nearly 2 hours from Abu Dhabi City but it is still in the Abu Dhabi Emirate even though it’s so close to the Oman border!

In one day, I visited Al-Ain Oasis which is an Oasis of Palm Grove trees and Al-Ain Palace Museum which was once the home of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who lived here until the ’60s, Al Jahili Fort and Qasr AlMuwaiji .

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, day trip to Al-Ain, Al-Ain Oasis

I find the growth of the UAE fascinating but apart from Qasr AlHosn in Abu Dhabi city, it is hard to see what Abu Dhabi and the UAE looked like before this and it really wasn’t that long ago.

So to see Al-Ain Palace which is very basic for a Palace in an old Arabic mud building design and thinking that the founding Father of the UAE lived here with his family until the ’60s is really interesting and eye-opening to see and really made me appreciate the city of Abu Dhabi much more afterwards.

For this day trip from Abu Dhabi, I recommend hiring a driver who will take you there, take you from attraction to attraction and bring you home. Give yourself from about 9:00 am to 17:00 – 18:00 to do the full day trip.

Here is a guided day tour package from Abu Dhabi to Al-Ain with a driver and local guide for a great price!

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, day trip to Al-Ain, Al-Ain Palace Museum

39. Telal Resort Al-Ain

Telal Resort is a luxury boutique resort in the stunning and unique oasis outside of Al-Ain.

The accommodation features poolside villas and if you haven’t planned your whole Abu Dhabi itinerary yet, I’d recommend checking this out and seeing if you can fit in a night’s stay here .

However, it’s also great as a day trip from Abu Dhabi because you can book one of their one-day heritage and cultural packages where you will be welcomed to their own Heritage Village in the morning with Arabic Coffee, dates and local sweats followed by a tour of the Heritage Village , then you can go camel or horse riding , try on traditional clothes , take a wildlife safari and end your day with an Arabic dinner before heading back to Abu Dhabi.

This is perfect for those who want an adventure day out in Abu Dhabi in the desert but want everything organised, a high level of service and a bit of luxury.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Telal Resort Al Ain (@telalresortalain)

Yes, a day trip to Dubai from Abu Dhabi is possible as they are only 1.5 hours apart by car.

Getting from Abu Dhabi to Dubai via public transport is limited but you can get a taxi or hire a car and drive yourself.

I think Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit if you have already been to Dubai and want to get a different feel from the UAE and experience more UAE attractions but perhaps you want to pop back for a dose of Dubai life which you can do from Abu Dhabi.

Thank you for reading and I hope this things to do in Abu Dhabi blog post has helped you plan your trip!

The 13 best free things to do in Abu Dhabi

Feb 12, 2024 • 9 min read

There's an abundance of activities in Abu Dhabi that don’t cost anything at all © U__Photo / Shutterstock

Often synonymous with glitz and glam, Abu Dhabi might seem like a destination tailored exclusively to upscale travelers. However, beneath its futuristic facade lies a treasure trove of free things to do, catering to even the most budget-conscious travelers.

The United Arab Emirates' capital has a plethora of sights and outdoor attractions that don't demand a hefty price tag. From strolling along the picturesque Corniche at sunset to exploring Emirati art at the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi presents an array of activities that allow visitors to soak in its charm without breaking the bank.

Here's our guide to the best free things to do in Abu Dhabi.

The fort of Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest building in Abu Dhabi, sits in front of modern skyscrapers

1. Take a self-guided walking tour of downtown Abu Dhabi

A journey through downtown Abu Dhabi is best experienced on foot. Free self-guided audio tours offer a deep dive into the history of the city's urban fabric and its hyper-rapid growth over the past five decades. Meander through the lively city streets, where each corner reveals a blend of global architectural styles, a testament to the multicultural nature of the country at large.

Highlights include the iconic Qasr Al Hosn , the oldest stone building in the capital, the bustling souq and the iconic late-night cafes that continue to make some of Abu Dhabi's most cherished street foods.

2. Engage in interfaith dialogues at the Abrahamic Family House

Opened in 2023, the Abrahamic Family House is a unique complex built to symbolize religious harmony and the country's commitment to fostering a multicultural and inclusive society. Each religious space – there's a mosque, a synagogue and a church – while distinct in its religious symbolism and architectural style, harmoniously aligns with one another to create a unified but diverse complex.

The Abrahamic Family House is not just a place of worship. It's also a center for learning and dialogue with regular interfaith events, cultural programs, and public talks to foster understanding and respect among different communities of faith.

Planning tip: To fully appreciate each space's intricate design and significance, consider booking a free guided tour.

The beautifully decorated arches and interior courtyard at Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

3. Admire the symmetry and intricacies of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

An architectural wonder, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was completed in 2007 and houses the mausoleum of the founding father of the United Arab Emirates and the mosque’s namesake, Sheikh Zayed I. While entry to the mosque is free, visitors must pre-book their entry tickets online. A 45-minute guided tour unravels the mosque's intricate architectural details and historical significance.

As sunlight dances on the pristine white marble exterior, the mosque's 82 domes and over 1000 columns – many of which feature intricate floral filigree inlaid with amethyst, lapis lazuli, abalone and other semi-precious stones – and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, unfold a story of artistic genius. Pay particular attention to the seven stunning stainless steel and 24-karat galvanized gold crystal chandeliers that adorn the prayer halls and foyers. Their upturned palm-tree shape symbolizes the country's livelihood and prosperity.

Planning tip: A paid late-night tour of the mosque, which runs from 10pm to 5am, is ideal if you're visiting Abu Dhabi on a long overnight stopover.

4. Appreciate local art at 421 Arts Campus

Located in a former port warehouse in the historic Mina Zayed neighborhood, 421 Arts Campus showcases a rotating series of exhibits by emerging local and regional MENA artists. The campus also houses co-working spaces, a cafe and a library. Check out the website for free film screenings, artist talks, and immersive workshops.

Planning tip: Can't get enough art? Make sure to also visit the contemporary exhibits at the Etihad Modern Art Gallery and the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery.

5. Explore earthen architecture at Al Jahili Fort

Built in 1891, Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain offers a glimpse of Abu Dhabi's bygone era. Initially serving as the royal summer residence of Sheikh Zayed I, the fort went on to become the headquarters of the British military in the 1950s.

Today, the restored fort is a stunning example of sustainable indigenous architecture. A key highlight is the permanent exhibit displaying photographs by Sir Wilfred Thesiger, an intrepid British explorer known for crossing the expansive Empty Quarter desert twice in the 1940s.

6. Soak up the sun at Al Hudayriyat Beach

If the energetic pulse of Abu Dhabi feels too overwhelming, make your way to Al Hudayriyat Beach for a refreshing change of pace. Stroll along the pristine stretch of powdery white sand and take in the panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf on the horizon. The beachfront promenade also features cycle paths, a skate park, an outdoor gym, boutiques and several dining options.

Local tip: Looking to escape the crowds? Head to Shipwreck Beach in Al Ruwais for an even quieter beach getaway.

The Jabal Hafeet Mountain Road with epic views

7. Hike Jebel Hafeet mountain

When the call of adventure beckons, head to the rugged trails of Jebel Hafeet , Abu Dhabi's highest peak. As you hike the winding paths of this majestic mountain, each step unveils breathtaking vistas of the vast desert expanse and craggy terrain. Be sure to start off early in order to beat the heat, as there's no shade along the trail.

Local tip: The area is also home to a collection of approximately 500 ancient beehive-shaped tombs that date as far back as 2500 BCE. Now part of Al Ain's UNESCO World Heritage site , these Bronze Age relics provide an important look at sea trading routes and the life of this region's early inhabitants.

8. Walk along the Corniche

The Corniche is a splendid fusion of Abu Dhabi's quintessential modernity and rich cultural heritage. As you meander along this scenic waterfront promenade that stretches for 8km (5 miles) along the city's northwestern shore, keep your camera ready to capture a diverse array of sights that include sleek skyscrapers, verdant gardens, sunny beaches, art installations, traditional dhows bobbing in the waters and casual street food stalls abuzz with local residents.

Don't miss the opportunity to stay for sunset – the city skyline transforms in the night sky, revealing a stunning display that celebrates both past and present.

Local tip: For picture-perfect views of the Abu Dhabi skyline, head to the viewpoint on Al Kasir Island. It's a popular evening walking path for locals and you'll also pass by Abu Dhabi Heritage Village and the  UAE flagpole .

9. Stargaze at the Alquaa Milky Way Spot

Standing atop the serene dunes of the Al Quaa Milky Way Spot is a fantastic reminder that Abu Dhabi is not just a modern cityscape. In fact, over 70% of the emirate's vast landscape is desert. Away from the city's bright lights, this remote desert area unveils the night sky in its full, star-studded glory. As darkness envelops the desert – it's best to go on a new moon – the Milky Way emerges, painting a breathtaking canvas of twinkling stars and cosmic wonders across the vast, open skies.

The tranquility of the desert at night, coupled with the awe-inspiring celestial display, makes Al Quaa a perfect escape for those seeking to connect with the universe or enjoy a moment of peaceful reflection under the stars. Remember to bring a camera to capture the night's magic, and perhaps a blanket to lie back and watch the cosmic dance unfold.

Planning tip: A 4WD is only necessary if you plan to go off-roading and camp in the desert overnight. The area to and from Al Quaa is remote – it's approximately an hour's drive from downtown Abu Dhabi – so be sure to pack everything you may need.

10. Explore the traditional souqs of Mina Zayed

A stark contrast to the city's monolith collection of modern malls, the souqs of Mina Zayed reflect the trade and social traditions that have shaped Abu Dhabi for the past five decades. Engage with friendly vendors, proudly showcasing their goods and often sharing the stories behind their crafts. It's not just a shopping trip; it's an immersive cultural experience.

For the freshest seafood meal in the capital, head to the Al Mina fish market where fishermen haggle to sell their daily bounties from the Arabian Gulf – the on-site restaurants will grill your purchased fish to perfection.

Local tip: For one-of-a-kind souvenirs like Arabic coffee pots and aromatic spices, stop by the Iranian souq, carpet souq and dates market.

11. Immerse in local culture at the Liwa Moreeb Dune Festival

An annual weeklong celebration of local Emirati culture, the Liwa Moreeb Dune Festival offers visitors a chance to learn about the UAE's history, its relationship with the desert, and how these have shaped its contemporary identity. The festival backdrop? The dominant Tal Moreeb dune, considered by many to be the world's largest sand dune. Highlights of the festival include the thrilling Moreeb Hill Climb, where motorsport enthusiasts compete to conquer the steep dune.

Beyond the roar of engines, the festival is a cultural feast. Traditional Bedouin tents are set up, offering a glimpse into the nomadic lifestyle of the desert dwellers. Here, you can witness falconry displays, camel races, and horse shows, which are integral parts of Emirati culture.

12. Get an introduction to Emirati Art at the Cultural Foundation

First opening its doors in 1981, the Cultural Foundation is one of Abu Dhabi's long-standing champions of Emirati arts and culture. A heritage landmark in its own right – it seamlessly integrates modern and Islamic architectural styles – the foundation was conceived under the patronage of Sheikh Zayed I as a thriving center for artistic expression and creativity among Emirati artists.

Following a comprehensive decades-long renovation, the Cultural Foundation re-emerged in 2018 and continues to host art exhibitions, musical performances, heritage workshops and panel discussions.

Planning tip: Although most workshops typically require a fee, entry to the building and the main gallery areas is complimentary.

Thousands of flamingos gather at Abu Dhabi's Al Wathba Wetlands

13. Take a nature walk through Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

Located just 45 minutes outside the city center is Al Wathba Wetland Reserve , a biodiverse 5-sq-km (1.9-sq-mile) park that's the first in the UAE to be placed on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas .

While its thriving population of greater flamingos remains a significant draw, the wetland is also home to over 250 migratory birds, 35 species of plants, and wildlife such as the desert hare, red fox and pygmy shrew.

Planning tip: There are two self-guided walks (1.5 km or 3 km; 1.9 miles or 3.8 miles) that take you through the desert bush. If you're visiting between autumn and spring, take the longer path for a chance to view the flamingos waterside.

Imagine having dinner with stingrays and schools of brightly coloured fish swimming above your head: The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi put together an underwater iftar as a grand welcome to its newest residents, two African Manatees.

The 'extremely rare' African Manatees are joining the aquarium's more than 46,000 marine and terrestrial animals — marking the first time they are seen in the region.

From the first day of Eid Al Fitr, the general public will be able to witness the captivating beauty of the Manatees and learn about the species from on-site experts.

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Only a select few facilities around the world are allowed to host the African Manatees, said Paul Hamilton, general manager of the National Aquarium.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

“What you are seeing here is a rare sight. The two male manatees were transferred from an aquarium in Seoul,” Hamilton said as the sea mammals — categorised as vulnerable species — were unveiled for the first time after the iftar.

The unique iftar was held in the region’s longest underwater tunnel offering a mesmerising view of the multiple species of fish and marine life. Among those present were several ambassadors, diplomats, and officials, especially from the African nations.

Know the Manatees

Both gentle giants were seen comfortably swimming across their new environment, often coming close to the glass wall and posing for the cameras.

Native to the warm inland and coastal waters of West and Central Africa, African Manatees — also known as sea cows in general — are gentle omnivores crucial to their ecosystems.

They are secretive aquatic mammals that live in nutrient-rich water bodies from Senegal to Angola.

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Despite their ecological importance, these majestic creatures face significant threats, including habitat degradation, poaching, entrapment by dams, and bycatch in fisheries.

Inspiring conservation

The rare sea cows were brought into the country as part of the aquarium's African Manatee Project, which aims to promote public awareness and inspire conservation action.

The National Aquarium provides a sanctuary that closely mimics the manatees’ natural habitat in Africa — while offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe and learn about these magnificent creatures firsthand.

The duo were transferred from South Korea on a special flight accompanied by a team of specialists, who closely monitored the Manatees during the trip.

“Our commitment to following international standards guarantees that these magnificent creatures are thriving in an atmosphere that prioritizes their safety, happiness, and overall well-being,” Hamilton said.

unique travel abu dhabi photos

Among the noble objectives of this initiative are conserving a species facing serious threats in their natural habitats; educating and raising awareness among the public about marine conservation issues; advancing research efforts aimed at studying the behaviour and ecology of African Manatees; and contributing to the African Aquatic Conservation Fund to support projects aimed at preserving manatees in West Africa.

Additionally, the aquarium will sell hand-made items crafted by African artisans — with a portion of proceeds donated to the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund — to support the conservation of the species in their natural environment.

Collaborative effort

Nicolas Heard, acting director general of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, lauded the collaborative efforts initiated by the National Aquarium.

unique travel abu dhabi photos

“This collaboration enables crucial financial support from Abu Dhabi for the conservation of the special and highly threatened West African manatee in its natural habitat. Through this partnership, we aim to fund conservation projects and build local capacity to ensure the long-term protection of this unique species.”

Lucy Keith-Diagne, executive director of the African Aquatic Conservation Fund, who spent the past 37 years conducting field research with marine mammals, praised the efforts to protect marine life.

unique travel abu dhabi photos

“This partnership reflects our steadfast commitment to biodiversity conservation and preservation of crucial marine environments. We consider the National Aquarium in Abu Dhabi a valuable partner in this joint effort, and look forward to achieving positive outcomes that benefit marine ecosystems and the communities involved in the region and beyond.”

SeaWorld Yas Island, located in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, recently claimed a world record.

The major attraction was named the world’s largest indoor marine-life theme park by the Guinness World Records. The title comes just 11 months after the park opened in May 2023 and  signifies another “largest”  world record title-holder by the U.A.E.

General manager Thomas Kaferle said the SeaWorld Yas Island team is pleased with the Guinness designation.

“This prestigious achievement is a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible entertainment experience, coupled with an interactive educational aspect enabling guests to learn more about marine life in a fun and entertaining setting that engages all ages,” Kaferle said.

First In The Region

SeaWorld  Abu Dhabi  is the first marine life theme park in the U.A.E. and is a massive space. The total indoor attraction spans more than 1.9 million square feet across five stories.

Inside, there are more than 100 experiences involving animals that include both close-up encounters and various activities. It also has more than 30 rides and attractions, retail spaces for performances, and 17 places to eat.

The park is home to more than 150 types of marine life and over 15.3 million gallons of water that are spread across eight “immersive realms.”

Realms Around the World

According to SeaWorld’s website, the realms represent various oceans and species from the North Pole to more tropical destinations.

The realms include  Abu Dhabi Ocean,  One Ocean, MicroOcean, Endless Ocean, Tropical Ocean, Rocky Point, and Polar Ocean. Each realm has its own personality and attractions. For example, in Tropical Ocean, there is a flamingo habit, a dolphin exhibit, a tropical bird exhibit, a rollercoaster, and more.

In another realm, Endless Ocean, guests can expect five interactive experiences, like a thrill ride, a play area, and a performance space.

According to its website, the park is committed to maintaining the “highest standard of animal welfare,” according to a press release. The park utilizes best practices set by animal welfare organizations around the globe and is certified by Global Humane, the largest animal welfare certified in the world.
