Become A Universal Travel Agent – How To Get Started

Are you thinking about becoming a Universal Studios travel agent and wondering where to start? Our guide below covers some of the most basic questions like this and many more to help get people interested in selling Universal Resort travel to friends, family and clients. Becoming a Universal Travel Agent isn’t as hard as one might think. It mostly comes down to choosing the right agency to help you get started.

What Does A Universal Travel Agent Do?

Volcano Bay beach and pool

Like a guest looking to visit the Universal Resorts, agents plan out and book clients Universal trips . Whether you’re booking for an entire family, a solo traveler or a honeymoon, Universal Travel Agents can accommodate any client and their needs. Booking vacations for Universal can include all of the following:

  • Tickets only
  • Tickets + Hotel
  • Tickets + Hotel + Dining
  • Packages + Transportation

Every guest is going to be different so an agent needs to be prepared to meet their clients wishes. While it is nice to book a full package for someone, they may only needs tickets because they used reward points to book their hotel. Agents have to be ready for anything.

But your work doesn’t stop there. An agent may be required to make changes based on their clients request. So you’ll need to be able to provide support from initial contact till end of travel.

And even when you’re client is done travelling, you should always remain in touch. Make sure they had a great time. Get feedback on their experience and then apply it moving forward.

How Do You Become A Universal Travel Agent?

Shops in old time London style

If you’re interested in selling Universal vacations as a travel agent you’ll need to join a company that hires and trains agents. While there is no specific test that you take to become an agent, you will need to complete some training before you start booking.

Companies like Park Savers offer people interested in selling travel as an agent from home the opportunity to sell. They provide a welcome packet, online training and continued support after joining their program. You don’t have to have prior selling experience to join. Just a love of travel and an interest in selling Universal vacations.

Park Savers even provides E&O insurance for free for agents. Their program doesn’t require that you book a certain number in commission every year like many other programs out there. You can book as much or as little as you want. You’ll need a phone and computer to get started.

By joining a program like theirs , you will be able to start booking Universal vacations within a few days of joining. They offer online training that can be completed within 48 hrs. All you have to do is sign up and you’re on your way.

How Do Travel Agents Do Their Bookings?

Agents use online software programs to complete their bookings for clients. Online or Web-Based software allows agents to access and book from anywhere as long as they have an internet connection. The great thing about this is that the interface is very easy to use. It works very similar to if you were booking on your own, like a hotel. Enter your dates, number of guests and what you need (hotel, tickets, package).

From here you’ll be choosing your clients preferences like which hotel, property or not, how many days in the parks, etc. You’ll then enter the guests names and contact info. Then it’s time to check-out. The process couldn’t be more simple for the agent of the client.

Agencies like Park Savers use web-based software including VAX so that their agents can book and earn a commission. It’s very simple to see what they will be earning and, if they want, discount the guests package with it.

Is Training Provided For Universal Travel Agents?

Rock tower with theme park sign

Training is provided for Universal Agents and it’s all done online. Agents will learn everything from hotels and ticket types to entertainment and special offers. It’s key for an agent to know the resorts inside and out so that when they are helping a client, they can properly answer each question.

Training online doesn’t take long and can be complete in 1-2 days at your own pace. Training typically includes Powerpoint style reading and listening with small quizzes at the end to show you actually listened and learned. A final exam will then be taken and the agent can earn their training certificate.

Once training is completed the agent can then begin to book for clients. They are also able to receive agent discounts for themselves for tickets and hotels. Benefits can include discounts of up to 50% off. They are subject to change.

Do Universal Agents Receive Benefits?

Train at entrance to town

Yes, agents who actively book and complete their yearly training have access to benefits directly from Universal including:

  • 50% off up to 4 park tickets
  • Up to 50% off rack rates for Universal Orlando Resort Hotels

Training must be completed each year. Once done your training is valid for 365 days from the date of certification. CLIA, ARC or IATA membership ID cards are required to redeem.

All benefits are subject to change.

How Much Do Universal Travel Agents Get Paid?

Universal Globe surrounded by a lake

Like most travel agents in the industry, agents are commission-based so there is no set salary or hourly wage. How much an agent makes is based upon how many bookings they do and at what level. For instance, booking a tickets only package for clients won’t net much as tickets alone don’t add up to much.

When an agent books a complete package including tickets, hotel and transportation, they can net a very good commission. On average an agent will profit around $350-$400 per package whereas a tickets only situation will only net them $100-$200.

Often times a package with hotel and tickets only takes a few minutes longer than booking tickets only for Universal. So if an agent can include a hotel for their client, their pay goes up significantly.

An actively booking agent can expect to make between $1,200 and $2,000 a month. This averages out to be about 5 packages a month. For an agent who just wants to book here and there, they can expect to make between $800 and $1,200 a month.

While these numbers are just estimates, there are full-time agents who make over $3,000 a month booking Universal vacations.

The great thing about being commission based with a company like Park Savers is that you can work as much or as little as you want without having to meet minimums. Whether you book 1 package a month or 10, you’ll always get paid 70% or more as you move up. That’s the highest starting % in the industry.

What Do I Need To Get Started?

Universal Studios globe at the park

Most people who are just starting out already have the necessary tools to become an agent. In today’s world, all you need is a cell phone and a computer. Because the booking systems are web-based, you’ll need your computed and the internet to book. You can use your cell phone to call or text clients.

Most agents set-up an email for their agency so that clients see something professional. If you don’t have your own website, just create a Facebook page for your agency and allow messaging. A lot of great contact come from social media dn this is an easy way to communicate and share things with clients.

You’ll also want to research what your tax situation is going to be. Almost all Universal agents fall into the category of Independent Contractor which means you’ll receive a 1099 at the end of each tax year. A 1099 shows any commission that was paid to you. Taxes are never taken out. Because of this, some IC’s like to create an LLC or S-Corp to help deduct expenses.

However, if you don’t plan to book a lot you can probably get away with being a sole proprietor which means you and your business are one in the same. Do some research online or speak to a tax expert to see which one would be best for you.

Choosing The Right Universal Agency

Grey, gold and blue Universal Studios welcome sign

When it comes to choosing the right agency to work with, there are several things to consider. First, how much do they pay when it comes to commission? Most agencies pay 50% to begin with. That means you’re doing a solid split down the middle with everything you book.

Second, do they have minimums that you need to meet? Some agencies do there by the month and some do them by the year. Minimums force agents to complete X number of bookings when they may not want to. An agency with no minimums allows the agent to book as much or as little as you want.

Third, does the agency provide E&O insurance? Many states require this of travel agents and it can get pricey, especially for a new agent just starting out. E&O insurance protects the agent and the client incase the agent makes a mistake and costs the client something. It keeps the agent from having to pay out of pocket and a means for the client to recover their loss.

Fourth, is the agency a registered Seller of Travel in FL and CA? If you live in either of these states and plan to sell to anyone living in these states, a Seller of Travel Certificate is required per state law to sell.

As of right now, there’s one agency that meets all these important requirements and that’s the Park Savers Agency . They currently offer the following for agents:

  • Online Training
  • VAX booking access for Universal Resorts
  • CLIA ID Card access
  • 70% starting commission
  • E&O insurance for each agent at no cost
  • Seller of Travel in CA and FL
  • No minimum booking amount
  • Monthly giveaways
  • Constant support
  • Online resources

The Park Savers agency has been hosting agents for over 10 years and have excelled at helping new and existing agents make the most of their sid-gig or full-time job booking Universal Resorts and more.

Reasons to Use Travel Advisors for your Universal Exclusive Vacation Package

You may wonder why anyone would use travel agents for Universal Orlando Resort when they could book the trip themselves.

While you certainly  can  book your own Universal vacation, it’s worth using a travel agent (who specializes in Universal) to get the most value out of your Universal Studios Orlando vacation. Here are the reasons why:

Hogarts Express at Harry Potter

1. It’s 100% Free

This is probably the biggest misunderstanding. The services of Universal travel agents are completely FREE to you, the client. There is no catch. It’s totally free.

Universal pays out a small commission to the agency for the assistance they provide. At no time does this commission (or any fee) get passed on to you.

2. They Help You Plan Your Universal Studios Florida Vacation

Travel Agents for Universal Studios Orlando vacations are theme park fans through and through. They have a genuine passion for Orlando’s three amazing theme parks. Universal Studios travel agents are often frequent visitors to Universal theme parks: Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

They’ll be able to answer your questions, give you the latest updates on Universal parks, and share insider tips that will give you a big advantage.

Want to know the best place for lunch in Universal Studios or the best ride for kids at Islands of Adventure? How about where to buy wands at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or strategies to avoid the crowds at Universal ? They can answer all these questions and much more!

Because you have an advisor throughout the planning process, you are much more likely to have the perfect vacation than if you went it alone.

3. They Help You Book Your Reservations

Once you and your Universal travel agent have customized your itinerary and agreed on the details, your Universal travel agent will book all your Universal reservations for you. This includes your park tickets, hotel stays, unforgettable dining reservations, transportation, Express Passes, and anything else that must be reserved ahead of time.

If something comes up after you book, your travel advisor will even help you change your plans and rebook your Universal reservations if needed. Imagine having someone else work with Universal Customer Service on your behalf!

These efforts will make your life much easier, and you’ll be assured everything will be booked correctly.

4. You’ll Get The Best Deals

Your Universal travel advisor will make sure you get the lowest-priced vacation package. They are the first to know when a new discount or promotion is released, and they’ll add the best discounts to your reservation.

The rates you will receive with either be the exact same as the rates you can get directly through Universal or lower because the agent knows where to look for discounts. You’ll never pay more.

5. U-Preferred Agencies Are The Best Travel Agencies For Universal Studios

Working with a Diamond or Platinum Member of the U-Preferred Agency Program will give you peace of mind that everything will be done correctly.

Universal bestows this designation to only a select number of travel agencies that have met their rigorous standards of excellence. This is not to say that non-U-Preferred Agencies are less qualified. But why not just have the peace of mind that you are working with one of the top travel agents for Universal vacations if you can?

We recommend reaching out to a Diamond or Platinum Member of the U-Preferred Agency Program. We have a few listed above.

6. They Will Get a Free, No-Obligation Quote

Are you wondering how much a trip to Universal will cost or when the best time to go to Universal in 2024 might be?

Just reach out to one of the agencies listed above and request some information and a free quote. They are only a text, email, or phone call away!

Let’s sum this up. When you book with travel agencies specializing in Universal vacations, you’ll work directly with a Universal expert who will answer your questions and help you devise a plan. Your Universal travel agent will search for the best possible promotional rates for your trip.

After you decide what to do and where to stay, your dedicated vacation planner will book all aspects of your Universal vacation. You still get to call the shots, but the hassle of booking everything yourself will be theirs. No headaches and no stress.

Best of all – it’s completely free! So there’s really no downside to using a knowledgeable and friendly Universal travel planner on your next trip.

How to Become a Universal Travel Agent

Over 44% of travelers are likely to use the help of travel advisors. In addition, after the pandemic uncertainty that brought activities to a halt, economies are rising again.

If you are passionate and want to become a Universal travel agent, it’s time. First, however, joining a reputable travel agency is essential to help your clients make proper bookings.

So how do you become a Universal travel agent? In our following guide, we seek to educate you on what the process entails, as well as the perks and expectations of the job.

JOIN US!  Click on our  contact page  and learn how you can join the Fun Park Go family!

What Does a Universal Travel Agent Do?

As a Universal travel agent, your primary assignment is to map out the client’s travel plans and activities. While they could do these processes themselves, they are labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Based on experience, travel agents can also suggest the best destinations to their clients. You hence have to have a hands-on experience of what various travel destinations offer.

Your client’s safety is paramount, so you have to stay updated.

You sometimes have to visit the destinations to get first-hand experience. So here are the two types of travel agents you can become.

Leisure Travel Agent

Universal Travel Agents are leisure agents. They sell vacation packages to the public, families, singles, or couples going on vacations. You will be planning client itineraries based on the client’s budget and interests.

How Do Travel Agents Do Their Bookings?

Universal agents do use online platforms and software to complete their clients’ bookings. The online platforms or software used are user-friendly and anyone can easily fill in their bookings.

VAX is where Universal Travel Agents are allowed to book, modify and help their clients with their vacation.

As a client could book for their travel, the agency just does the same on behalf of the client. The agency will book hotels and ticket packages based on the preferences of the client. After completing the booking, then one will just check out to finish the booking process.

Whether you use a travel agent or not when booking your Universal vacation, the cost is the same for the client. So why not use the help of an expert to walk you through the process?

How Do You Become a Universal Travel Agent?

If interested in joining the travel agents field, it’s essential to know the qualifications needed. While the processes look straightforward, an agency’s association gives a professional look.

The minimum educational qualification to become a travel agent is a high school diploma. However, taking travel-related courses has an added advantage and an increased employment chance.

You can get these educational qualifications in vocational and community colleges. Besides, there are notable 4-year colleges that offer degrees in tourism and travel, so you have various options.

Here are additional requirements:

Licensing and Certifications

While some states need you to have a license, others don’t. Therefore, you need to know your state’s travel regulations.

The registration process is straightforward since you fill out a form, pay a fee, and get a license number. It’s valid for one year and is subject to renewal.

Since you deal with clients directly, errors are inevitable. However, you can stay covered if clients file lawsuits against you by buying errors and omissions insurance plans.

But, some travel agencies offer this coverage for their agents; hence it’s essential to ask.

Is Training Provided For Universal Travel Agents?

Yes, any agency you choose will take you through a training session for work familiarization. Most programs don’t take long and teach software knowledge and client handling processes.

First, you will need to join an accredited travel agency such as Fun Park Go. Then, you will need to complete a certification program offered by Universal Orlando Resorts.  You will also have access to the Universal Partner Login through Fun Park Go. Once you have completed these steps, you will be ready to start planning unforgettable vacations for your clients!

This will ensure you can provide answers each time a client approaches you with questions. After the training, you earn a travel agent’s certificate and start working from home.

Do Universal Agents Receive Benefits?

When working as a Universal travel agent, getting compensated for your time and efforts is vital. Furthermore, you have to know agents don’t usually have a fixed monthly wage or hour rates.

Instead, you will be working on a commission basis counted on the number of successful bookings you do. Commission percentages vary, and choosing higher-paying agencies means more compensation.

Also, note that clients in Disney vacation packages differ, which affects your commissions. For example, your commissions are low if a client only needs tickets. But if they include tickets, accommodation, and transportation, you are sure to net a good commission.

Choosing the Right Universal Travel Agency

The search for an appropriate host agency can be overwhelming with the many options available. However, like clients, you want to engage with a travel agency that aligns with your goals.

Here is how to skip the uncertainty and choose the right one.

Quality of Supplier Relationships

Quality relationships in the travel industry are ingredients to the success of your travel agent business. When you join a particular travel agency, you will likely work with their listed suppliers.

While the relationship between the two will be direct and professional, knowing these suppliers is crucial. You also want to freely engage with their Business Development Manager (BDM).

This will allow you to ask more about their products or services for top familiarization. By selecting a company that encourages interaction, you can be sure to get recognized for your efforts.

Check Agency Reputation

The country has 73,249 travel agencies . While some of these are reputable, others are not.

You can learn about these agencies’ reputations through feedback from veteran agents. There are also trustworthy review sites like the Professional Association of Travel Hosts (PATH).

This is a travel agencies body upholding travel standards in the industry. You can look up your preferred agency to check its accreditation.

The Agency’s Experience

Your search for the best host agency will yield many results, and knowing how experienced they are is vital. You want a host agency that has worked in the industry for some time.

Such experience shows you they have sharpened their marketing skills, built solid ties, and much more. They have also worked with new travel agents like you and are willing to guide you well.

While an agency’s operational period may be significant, this doesn’t guarantee experience. So, don’t overlook newer travel agencies and deem them unfit.

How to Market Yourself

Besides joining the best agency, note that you have to become active to win clients. While your host may provide client leads, quality clients are those you convert.

This is because you develop a connection with them and understand their needs. However, dealing with an agency’s clients may lead to communication barriers and a negative experience.

One way to score clients is to join social media groups and introduce yourself. Also, be active in the groups to show prospects you can solve their travel questions.

Benefits of Becoming a Universal Travel Agent

Becoming a Universal travel agent comes with a fair share of perks to enjoy, besides enacting your passion and interacting with different calibers of people.

Here are some advantages of becoming an agent.

Travel and Accommodation Discounts

Traveling costs are usually high and limit new places exploration. But, as a travel agent, you don’t have to worry about this since you get significant discounts.

Since the suppliers need a considerable customer flow, familiarization trips are inevitable. Therefore, they offer these perks to travel agents to experience firsthand what they offer.

You unlock more discount benefits as an International Association of Travel Agents (IATA) or a recognized travel association member. These perks will allow you to make informed destination suggestions to your clients later.

Being Your Own Boss

Upwards of 36.2 million individuals will be working remotely by 2025. By becoming a travel agent, you can work from anywhere globally.

You have the privilege of choosing your schedule and can work late or early mornings if necessary. You also don’t have to beat the traffic to work each day or sit in crowded conference rooms.

Due to technological advancements, you can hold your clients’ conference meetings virtually. You can also choose to work full-time or part-time.

Share Passion and Experiences

By choosing to work in the travel industry, you are likely a travel enthusiast and love exploration. The digital marketing space offers an opportunity for travel enthusiasts to share ideas and experiences.

You can set up a blog to share and engage with prospects since you have first-hand experiences. This will also be useful for you in branding yourself as a travel agent.

Your expertise will attract travel leads since most travelers make decisions based on advice. With time, you can monetize your travel blog to earn passive income.

How Much Do Agents Get Paid?

When working as a travel agent, your income isn’t tied to specific payroll ranges. Instead, you need to be excellent at what you do and convince people.

When interacting with clients, being their travel advisor is not enough. Be sure to contact your client after their trip is over to get their feedback. By doing so, you can stand out as a concerned agent who is not after their money but their satisfaction.

Also, insist on the importance of referrals since a satisfied client will likely tell their experiences to others. You are also likely to score more clients and sell more packages by being trustworthy.

However, planning a trip to the park can be a hassle, but using a universal travel agent can make planning and booking your trip a breeze.

Take Advantage of the Best Deals: Universal Travel Agents are always up to date on the latest deals and exclusive discounts when booking a trip to Universal Studios. You’ll have access to the best offers and promotions, which can save you a significant amount of time and money. Do I Really Need a Travel Agent at Universal Orlando?

Three Broomsticks Photo Opportunities in Hogsmeade

By:   Jen Travis , a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

As a Travel Agent I get into this discussion a lot with clients as well as family and friends.  At the end of the day my statement is always the same.  Just because you have a laptop doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a travel agent to help you book a vacation, even to Universal Orlando.

First of all as a travel agent, I have to train yearly to be certified to even sell Universal vacations.  Marvelous Mouse Travel Agents also attend periodic webinars and training sessions. Finally we attend onsite training that include resort tours so we are fully versed and educated so when a client is asking for the best options to meet their needs we can speak not only from what we see on a screen but from first hand experience!  We even create room tour videos so that you can see first hand the types of rooms and amenities we are recommending for your epic vacation.

FIRST Diamond U-Preferred Travel Agency

Another reason to connect with a travel agent again comes back to knowledge.  We have strong relationships with all of our vendors including Universal especially since we were the FIRST Diamond U-Preferred Travel Agency. If you run into an issue we know who to call.  If a promotion is going to be released we are on it and can usually apply it to your booking. Finally do not forget that Marvelous Mouse Travels has published 2 books all about Universal Orlando full of tips and tricks for a successful trip.  This again comes back to our hands-on training and experiences at the park which our clients will all tell you is invaluable.

Travel Agent at Universal Orlando Marvelous Mouse Travles

Early Admission

PRO-TIP:   Did you know that when you book a vacation with Marvelous Mouse Travels regardless if you include a hotel or not you are guaranteed Early Park Admission? This is not a perk that you will get from Costco or some of these other third park ticket sellers.  Early Park Admission is an amazing benefit especially when you are trying to avoid long lines for some of the most popular rides at the park such as Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure, Velocicoaster and Escape from Gringotts.

Also when you purchase tickets from these third parties they do not share tips or provide assistance should something occur during your vacation. They will not help you with dining reservations or advise you on where to eat if you are Gluten-Free. Furthermore, there is no additional cost by booking with a Marvelous Mouse Travels vacation planner so why not connect with one of our amazing agents today! I will leave you with this thought:  would you buy a home without a realtor? No. Why not have a travel planner to help you with all your travel needs?!

Please reach out to  Jen , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels to plan your next vacation or you may contact Marvelous Mouse Travels.
