Riverside, CA – The Old Riverside Foundation, a non-profit organization for historic preservation, is holding its 28th Annual Vintage Home Tour, Restoration Faire and Vintage Mercantile on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 10 am until 4 pm.

“A Stroll in Colony Height and Mount Rubidoux” is the theme of the 20th annual Old Riverside Vintage Home Tour and Restoration Faire from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 14. The tour will feature six historic homes including the Ames-Westbrook House, an 1888 Queen Anne Victorian home, a Riverside Historic Landmark.

Tour chairwoman Nancy Parrish said two of this year’s homes are related by ownership.

“I found it interesting that two of the homes were related by brother and sister Grouts. His is the larger home on the hill next to Loring Park, hers the small, compact and wonderfully original Craftsman bungalow,” said Parrish.

She said Edith Grout was listed in the 1917 Riverside directory as making only $200 less that year than her prominent businessman brother Harry Grout, owner of Backstrand & Grout department store. Parrish said it is a mystery where single lady Edith Grout got the funds to build her own 1,900-square-foot Craftsman bungalow home. Her brother’s home is a nine-room 4,000-square-foot Spanish-style house designed by architect Henry L.A. Jeckel and built for $18,000.

The Ames-Westbrook has 12 rooms and was used as a rest home in the mid-20th century, then converted to a duplex. It became a single-family home again in 1971. The tour will display the home’s stained-glass windows, fireplaces, moldings and woodwork on the front staircase.

The English Tudor Revival-style Brooks Lowentrout House, built in 1922, has been expanded to two stories but retains some original kitchen cabinetry and a 1920s cast-iron sink/tub in the laundry room. Batchelder tile surrounds the fireplace, and the original built-in bookcase and china cabinet in the living room and dining room remain.

The Richard B. Hampson Home, built in 1910, is a Craftsman bungalow, originally a one-story, six-room house built for about $2,400. The house was renovated in the early 1990s, when the attic space was made into two bedrooms and a bath. The downstairs bathroom features a claw-foot tub and toilet.

The home also has a carriage house.

The Peter J. Weber House is a blend of Craftsman, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Moorish styles and is on the National Historic Register. The home features hand-carved, decoratively painted elements, such as cabinetry with decorative nailheads and extensive interior woodwork and tile. A still-operable 1935 solar water heater was made out of an automobile windshield.

Tickets are $15 pre-sale/$18 day of the tour and include admission to the restoration faire. Tickets are available through several local merchants, including Tiggy Winkles Gift Shoppe, Mission Galleria Antiques, A to Z Printing, Moreno Valley Flower Box, Woodcrest Library, Gardener’s Cottage, Do-It-Right Center (formerly Center Lumber), and the Riverside Courtyard Marriott (at University and Cranford).

Old Riverside Foundation is a certified 501(c)3 non-profit civic organization incorporated July 25, 1979. We are dedicated to the recognition, appreciation, and preservation of the built environment (buildings, feats of engineering, parks, avenues, landscaping features, and archeological remains) throughout Riverside and the Inland Empire.

• Encourage the conservation of historic homes and neighborhoods
• Advocate to local government for historic preservation
• Educate homeowners and building trades on standards and practices for the preservation and maintenance of heritage structures
• Maintain a robust architectural salvage operation
• Sponsor events regarding historic preservation & appreciation  (Vintage Home Tour, meetings, seminars, workshops, walking tours, publications, and more)
• Provide grants to homeowners for historic preservation and restoration
• Recognize and celebrate outstanding efforts with our annual Preservation Awards
• Provide information on tax advantages for the preservation of historic properties
• Promote dialogue among other preservation groups and individuals

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dave Stolte President Design director Dave Stolte joined the board in June, 2019 and was elected President in 2021. He brings forty years of experience in design and illustration to help bolster ORF’s public-facing visuals along with communication and organizational skills as an entrepreneur. He is editor for our newsletter and serves on all committees.

Carol McDoniel Vice President Carol joined the board after completing her internship and Master’s degree in History with an emphasis in Public History in 2013. She serves on our Grants and Awards Committees.

Ruth West Treasurer Ruth has been chair of our Membership Committee since 2016, and a board member twice for a total of six years, the latest stretch beginning in 2015. She also chairs the Weber House and Grants Committees and serves on the Salvage Committee and Nominating Committee.

Nancy Parrish Secretary Nancy has been a board member twice for a total of ten years, with the latest stretch beginning in 2013. Nancy has been the annual Vintage Home Tour Chair since 2008.

Jennifer Gamble Jennifer has been a board member twice for a total of six years, the latest stretch beginning in 2017. Jennifer specializes in buying and selling vintage and historic properties in Riverside. She serves on our Awards Committee.

Nanci Larsen Nanci is Director of Audience Development & Administration as well as a docent and tour guide for the Mission Inn, is a board member of the Riverside Downtown Partnership and is Vice Chair of the Downtown Area Neighborhood Alliance. Nanci joined the board in September, 2019 and serves on our Membership Committee.

Sharon Tennell Sharon joined the board December 2021. Sharon brings 25 years of Relationship and Product Management skills to ORF. She is interested in the preservation and restoration of residential structures. Sharon also serves on the Board of Museums and the Chief's Advisory Committee for the Riverside Police Department. She chairs our Events Committee.

Christian Gurrola Christian is a fifth-generation Riversider and fourth-generation realtor with an interest in the restoration of historic homes. He holds a BA in finance and marketing from Northern Arizona University. Christian serves as chair of our Advocacy Committee.

Anthony Sintek Anthony has resided in Riverside his entire life. He teaches sixth grade locally and is a member of DANA. Anthony embraces the opportunity to serve his community and give back to the city he loves. He serves on our Weber House Committee, where he is expanding our docent program.

Alex Ries Alex lives in the Palm Heights neighborhood, where he and his wife are restoring a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival. He serves on our Salvage Committee.

Danielle Gunkel Danielle Gunkel lives in the Wood Streets and works in information technology for the Office of the President at University of California, Riverside. She holds a Masters Degree in Library Science and is interested in researching house histories.
