The biggest and brightest, 60-year old star on Las Vegas Boulevard won't be found in a glitzy Strip resort showroom, but sits in the middle of the road, surrounded by traffic, under the sound of incoming planes.

Since 1959, the 25-foot-tall, "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign has become the legendary marker point for vehicles arriving from the west, signaling the true starting point of a Sin City adventure. The 24-hour, totally free attraction is recognizable around the world, luring countless tourists, newlyweds, and social media mavens every year.

Designed by Betty Willis for the Western Neon company, she chose not to trademark her iconic, ’50s style design, but gift the logo to the city. That’s one reason why you'll see it on plastered on every imaginable type of souvenir at shops across the region.

YESCO, another legendary sign company, now maintains the attraction and you'll probably only notice their logo once you get up close. You also might have missed that the letters spelling "Welcome," are positioned over seven "lucky" silver dollars, a nod to Nevada's nickname as the "Silver State."

Incredibly popular, if only as an enviable check-in on social media, a live feed provided by Earthcam will give you a handy real-time clue as to how many people already made the same plans as you. 

Located on the far, far southern end of the Strip, technically located within the unincorporated town of Paradise, drivers arriving from California will need to make a U-turn to gain access to the parking lot, only accessible on the west-bound side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Ride-share drivers will also be dropping off and picking up, and taxis are frequently waiting to take visitors back to the Strip. With only a dozen parking spaces, you could be waiting a while before you turn off your engine. Patience and early arrival are a year-round solid tip.

If you are bold enough to walk the three-quarters of a mile from the Mandalay Bay resort's front entrance, remember you might also be standing on line for a photo in the un-shaded desert heat before walking that same, rather dull three-quarter of a mile back to air-conditioned comfort. It's a good idea to have sunscreen and some water handy.

Depending on the time of day, be prepared for a long line of fellow tourists anxiously waiting for their moment to strike a pose. There is absolutely no fee, and anyone asking or expecting to be paid to take a photo is not authorized to do so. If you decide to take a picture with one of the unofficial showgirls, Elvis impersonators, or costumed characters, they do expect a tip.

At night, the crowd disappears, the temperature cools, and the sign truly pops against the inky black sky. But if you have an old digital camera or phone, be warned, the harsh contrast of light and dark might be too sensitive for your old electronics. Take a look at your screen before you leave to check if the brightness of the white cabinet has drowned out all the details in your photo. And be extra careful of the cars as you leave the parking lot. Las Vegas traffic is notoriously treacherous once the sun goes down.

Tips for Visiting

Be a good neighbor, and if someone asks you take a photo of them, give them a hand. For many, this is a genuine once in a lifetime visit. Take a couple of extra camera clicks as a back-up. You'd want them to do the same for you.

Common sense will tell you not to physically grab at the electrically wired pylon, although there is a little known way to legally and safely take a piece of the signage home with you. Since 2006, the Official Las Vegas Light company has been selling the actual yellow, incandescent light bulbs that were cheerfully glowing while you snapped a picture. They even detail the exact location on the sign your bulb was positioned. Position it on a shelf next to your framed selfie and display a unique souvenir of your visit. And then, as the back of the sign reads, "Come Back Soon."

Best Times to Visit the Sign

There are two main factors to consider when choosing when to visit the Las Vegas Sign — the crowds and the weather. Both of which can make the experience less than enjoyable if you go at the wrong time.

Let’s talk about the crowds first. To avoid them, early morning is the best time to go, and by early, we mean early — like between 6 am and 8 am early. Las Vegas is called Sin City for a reason, and many people are sleeping in, recovering from the night before. If you’re not keen on getting up and out that early, definitely aim for before noon.

Late afternoon can also be a good time in regard to crowds, but then, you’re facing the weather. Midday, at least in the summer months, is scorching hot.

Take our word for it when we say you don’t want to be waiting in a long line outside with crowds of strangers in the sweltering heat. Fall and spring offer a nice reprieve from the heat and are a perfect time to visit, especially in the late afternoon.

Photography Tips at the Sign

If you’re making a trip to the sign, and waiting in line to get up close, you definitely want to take advantage of the photo op. Las Vegas sign pics are iconic, but there are a few tips we think are helpful.

Another reason to visit in the early hours of the morning is that the rising sun in Las Vegas is beautiful and offers the perfect lighting for your photos. If an early morning visit is in the cards, sunset also offers wonderful lighting, but the line will be longer.

Think about the photo you want to take ahead of time so that you have a game plan when you get your turn at the sign. Maybe you just want to say cheese and smile, which is great. But if you’re thinking of something more elaborate, have a plan in place.

The sign is about 25 feet tall, which makes it perfect for both close-ups and pics that are a little further away with the sign in the background. A selfie stick can help you capture the perfect shot since there isn’t always someone there to take the photo for you.

There are photographers who will hang out at the sign and take your picture for a fee. These are professionals who just show up, so there isn’t a schedule or any reliable regularity. You’re more likely to find them at busier times.

Someone else you might find at the Las Vegas sign is Elvis or other performers. Is there anything more iconic than a pic of the sign with Elvis? Yes, we have one or two of these photos ourselves. They might not charge to take a picture with you, but it is a common courtesy to tip.

Parking and Accessibility

• There is free parking available, and the area is ADA-accessible.
• The only entry to the middle of the boulevard lot is going south on Las Vegas Blvd
• The sign is accessible via various bus routes and taxis

Free parking is available in a lot that’s adjacent to the Las Vegas sign. The lot contains about three dozen parking spaces, including ADA-accessible spots. Best of all, the parking is completely free, which is a rare find in Las Vegas.

The parking lot can get crowded, especially during peak times. There isn’t a time limit for parking there, but it’s smart not to overstay your welcome. Spend as much time as you want at the sign and the area, but then move along so that someone else can snag a parking spot. In other words, don’t keep your car here all day while you wander around.

Unlike other parking lots and structures that require turns onto backroads, the only way to get into this lot is from Las Vegas Blvd (aka The Strip).

How the Sign Has Changed Over the Years

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign became a fixture on Las Vegas Blvd in 1959. As it’s nearing its 65th birthday, we became curious about how the sign may have changed over the years. Our research led to some interesting tidbits.

First, the sign wasn’t always as popular as it is today. For the longest time, it was barely given a thought, and in the late 90s, there were whispers that the sign had become dated, irrelevant even. In the early 2000s, something changed, and the sign experienced a surge in popularity. Perhaps inspired by our fascination with everything kitsch and retro.

While the sign looks strikingly similar to the original, it has had a few facelifts over the years. Parts of it are still original, or at least suspected to be. It’s thought that the classic yellow frame, the blue poles that hold it up, the famous star, and the circles that hold the word ‘welcome’ are all original.

However, wear, tear, and vandalism have demanded that the face of the sign be replaced over the years. Still, the sign maintains its original personality and has found its way to the bucket list of countless visitors to Sin City.

Tours That Go To the Las Vegas Sign

Joining a tour is a great way to see the sights in and around Las Vegas. There are a number of tours that make a stop at the sign, giving passengers the opportunity to jump out and snap a pic or two.

A favorite of ours, especially for first-time visitors to the city, is the Big Bus Tour . This tour hits all the key spots and offers unlimited hop-on/hop-off privileges.

Most tickets are valid for 48 hours, so you can ride the entire loop, spotting areas you want to stop at (like the Las Vegas sign), and then hit them all on your next trip. Buses depart every 30 minutes from 10 am until 5 pm.

If you’re thinking of something a little more glam, a limo tour is a great option. We like to suggest a limo tour with a personal photographer, especially for groups and special occasions, like bachelorette parties.

Finally, there are tours that take you to destinations outside of Las Vegas, like the Grand Canyon or the Seven Magic Mountains. Often, these tours will stop at the Las Vegas sign either on the way out of town or on the return trip.

Other Las Vegas Sign

On the opposite end of the Strip is another Las Vegas sign called the Gateway Arches. This is a newer, more modern gateway into the city that was erected in 2016. It sits near the STRAT with the Observation Deck to the east. It serves as a sort of portal between the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.

In true Vegas style, the arches are huge and glittering. You can’t miss them even if you try. The arches feature more than 13,000 lights, with each arch extended 140 feet as it crosses over the Strip. Due to its size and location, you can’t pose directly in front of it like the other sign, but you can snap pictures of it in the background from certain walkways in the area.

Then, if you wander down just a little further to Main Street, you’ll come face to face with the new showgirls sign. Each decked-out lady stands 50 feet tall with the words “City of Las Vegas” below them.

How far is the sign from major hotels on the Strip?

The Vegas sign is 1 to 6 miles from the major Strip hotels. Mandalay Bay is the closest, and the Strat is the furthest.

On your trip to Las Vegas, one attraction you probably want to visit is the iconic “Welcome To Las Vegas” sign. One of the most well-known landmarks in the world, this deco sign, built back in 1959, attracts millions of visitors every year and is a must-do in Sin City. The sign stands 25-feet-tall and its iconic design includes seven white neon circles representing silver dollars as a nod to the Nevada state nickname, “Silver State.” The Las Vegas sign has been photographed far and wide for over 60 years. It’s still one of the best selfie spots in all of Las Vegas! Here are five tips for visiting.

1. Visit In The Morning For Fewer Crowds

I know — it’s Vegas — time to party the night away and sleep in. But, if you want to avoid crowds, get to the Las Vegas sign early. We went around 8 a.m. and there was literally no one there when we arrived. Since we had the place to ourselves, we felt free to pose for all kinds of dorky pictures. And with no line of people waiting, we were free to take our time and snap a whole lot of photos. With people waiting, I’d have been pressed to hurry and take a couple of pictures and let the next person have their turn. But by going early, we felt no pressure to get in and out quickly. Another huge benefit to going early is you’ll beat the Vegas heat. There is no shade at the sign and Las Vegas is typically hot and sunny. If you go early, you won’t have to worry about excessive heat or sun.

2. It Is Free To Visit

As the saying goes, not many things in life are free. But visiting the Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas sign won’t cost you a cent. Along with the Bellagio fountains and the Fremont Street Experience , this is another spectacular Vegas freebie. That’s right, there is no charge to visit the Las Vegas sign.

3. Visit From The Airport 

The Las Vegas sign is located in the median on the south end of the famous Las Vegas Strip , just south of Mandalay Bay Casino. The exact address is 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South. The sign is less than 10 minutes from Harry Reid International Airport. We decided to make the visit to the Las Vegas sign our first stop after landing. The drive from the airport to the sign was super easy and since our flight landed around 7 a.m., we knew the sign wouldn’t be crowded. 

Try to plan your visit to the sign around your flight arrival. Even if you’re not landing early, you can do a drive-by on the way to your hotel to check out the line situation, and if it’s not busy, stop in. There is a small parking lot right within the median that fills up fast. But if you go early like we did, you won’t have any problems finding a parking spot.

4. You Don’t Necessarily Have To Drive To The Sign 

If you don’t have a car in Las Vegas, you can still visit the Las Vegas sign. The Las Vegas city bus system is a good one. The Deuce runs from downtown to the Strip and vice versa, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Both the northbound and southbound routes offer stops at the Las Vegas sign. The Deuce also makes stops at almost every other tourist destination up and down the Strip. We’ve ridden the Deuce numerous times and it’s a good alternative to renting a car. The 3-day bus pass is only around $20, so it’s much cheaper than renting a car and not having to deal with traffic saves my sanity. But, of course, you’re dependent on the bus schedule. The Deuce will get you to the Las Vegas sign and many other hot spots around town, but it won’t do it quickly. So you’re basically trading time for money. Still, it’s interesting to ride around with other tourists and locals, and the convenience of not having to find parking or pay for an Uber might be worth it. 

At the other end of the spectrum is renting a limo. We’ve had friends that grabbed a limo when they landed at Harry Reid International Airport, booked it for an hour, and had the driver go straight to the sign. After taking all the amazing photos they wanted, they jumped back into the limo and were dropped off at their hotel. Considering they were all done in less than an hour, this could be a super-fun, not-too-over-the-top way to begin a Vegas trip.

5. Bring Your Camera Or Phone For Photos

There is no professional photographer on site at the Las Vegas sign. So, you will be taking your own photos. If you made the effort to get to the Las Vegas sign, you might as well take a ton of photos while you’re there. It can take a few snaps to get that perfect shot. I brought my selfie stick and was glad I did. Using the selfie stick is so much better than trying to cram your group into the photo while someone tries to stretch their arm a mile out to hold the phone. Just grab your portable selfie stick, set the timer on your phone, and you’ll get a great shot of your group. You can always ask another tourist to snap your photo, and most will be glad to assist, but if there’s no one around, you’ll be happy to have your selfie stick. 

Unless you’re an experienced photographer, you may want to avoid taking photos of the Las Vegas sign at night. It’s tricky to get a good photo with the glare of the lights from the sign, although, it is cool to see the fabulous sign all lit up at night. If you want to try nighttime photography, I’d recommend going a little earlier than sunset so you can take pictures before it’s dark, just in case your after-dark shots don’t turn out as good as you expected.

The "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, has been welcoming tourist to Las Vegas since 1959 and is one of the most iconic signs in the world. A snapshot with the iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign will definitely go down in your memory books.

About twenty-five feet tall, the diamond shaped neon sign that is topped with a red neon star can be found in the median at 5100 Las Vegas Blvd. South. To get there, drive south on Las Vegas Blvd. just past Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino . You can easily park your car, hop out and get the perfect shot. The sign is also a favorite spot to take wedding and engagement pictures and the site of numerous proposals.

There is a small parking lot nearby where you can park the car while you get your souvenir picture taken.

Location: The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is located in the center median of Las Vegas Blvd. South across from the Bali Hai Golf Club on the west side. It is .3 miles south of the Russell Road exit from Interstate 15.

Getting there by bus: A great way to visit the Welcome to Las Vegas sign is to ride the Las Vegas Deuce bus or Bus Route 104, both of which stop at the "Welcome to Las Vegas Sign" where you will find a pedestrian crosswalk for safe access.

Parking: There is a small adjacent parking lot, also in the center median, that is accessible only from the southbound lanes of Las Vegas Blvd.

Did you know.....

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, its 50th anniversary.

When the "Welcome" sign was built in 1959, the closest hotel-casino was Hacienda, which was a one-story rambling building on the site of the current Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. There was no Interstate 15 until the early 1970s and traffic from Los Angeles traveled along the Las Vegas Strip, which was then U.S. Highway 91.

Young Electric Sign Company owns the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" Sign

There have been reports that the sign was moved but there is no documentation to support this statement either with Clark County or with the sign owner.

The "Welcome" sign was designed by Nevada native, Betty Whitehead Willis. Willis sign repertoire also included the Blue Angel Motel sign and the Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino sign. In 1955 the Moulin Rouge became Las Vegas' first racially integrated casino and its opening night was featured on the cover of Life Magazine.

In 1959, graphic designer Betty Willis dreamed up the concept of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign from her hometown of Overton, Nevada. Her portfolio includes neon signs like the Moulin Rouge sign and Del Mar hotel, among many others.

She curated the design at the request of Ted Rogich, a WWII veteran and local salesman who believed the city needed a new way to advertise itself. Western Neon erected the sign and kept the landmark standing for locals and lovers of Las Vegas to visit on the famed boulevard stretch.

Betty Willis and Western Neon sold the sign to Clark County after its completion. Although Willis passed away in 2017, her work lives on. The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a cultural landmark that is replicated all over the world in various forms of media.

• There used to be two additional signs outside of the original Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. The second Las Vegas sign stood on Boulder Highway from 2002 to 2016, when the sign was eliminated by a roadside accident. • The Welcome to Las Vegas sign is 25 feet tall, with four angles pointed in a diamond shape. A star highlights the top and bottom angles of the diamond, and the side angles are rounded pointing to the west side and east side of Vegas.

• The sign is technically outside of the Las Vegas city limits, but close enough to consider it part of the infrastructure. It is located in the county of Paradise, Nevada.
• The circles that house the “Welcome” allegedly represent silver dollars, as a nod to Nevada’s nickname “The Silver State.”
• The sign has been owned by the Young Electric Sign Company, or YESCO, since its creation. YESCO is a multinational company with almost 50 offices in North America that has played a key role in creating some of the most famous signage in the country.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign: Where It Is and Why You Should Visit It

The iconic, notorious and down-right famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign” marks the beginning of every visitor’s journey to the City of Lights, filling each and every person with an excitement that is truly undeniable.

Conceived and commissioned by salesman Ted Rogich of Western Neon, who was inspired by the glitzy neon signs of hotels , casinos, and restaurants, the design was appointed to a commercial artist, Betty Willis, who gained fame for the iconic piece later in life than would be expected. She saw the sign as her gift to the city, thus, it was never trademarked and is the reason for its replication across a plethora of Las Vegas merchandise. 

When the 1970s hit, the era of neon signs was on its way out and the area surrounding the sign soon gave rise to superstructures, rendering the sign temporarily obsolete. But supposedly a motel owner, John Woodrum, ran a power line to the sign and resurrected the ‘dead’ landmark in front of his new property, propelling it into the limelight as the recognizable motif we know and love today.

Designed in the Googie architectural style that peaked in popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, the sign harks back to the futuristic, Space Age style that was highly influenced by car culture, and the Atomic Age, characterized by daring shapes and flamboyant signage. These styles gave the sign its twinkling silver dollars and mismatched fonts lined with yellow intermittent light bulbs, topped with an eight-pointed star that really brought home the fabulousness of old Vegas. The seven silver dollars are said to be a symbol of good luck for those entering the world’s gambling capital!

If you feel like you’re seeing déjà vu as you navigate the city, you wouldn’t be mistaken! Las Vegas Boulevard is home to a replica that was erected in 2002 that sits just inside the city’s limits and reads “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas” and in 2007 another replica was installed near Boulder Highway’s casino-laden strip.

2019 marks its 60th anniversary and it can still be found sparkling in all its glory on the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South, the unofficial boundary of the Las Vegas strip, marking guests arrival into the infamous Sin City.

We’ve collated a few of the most asked questions regarding the Las Vegas sign to make it easier for you to plan your own itinerary to Vegas.

Is the Las Vegas sign on the strip?

It may seem like an odd question but it’s a valid one! Surprisingly enough, the sign is actually located in Paradise, Nevada, as well as much of the old Vegas strip. Located south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Boulevard South, it’s technically four miles south of the official center of Las Vegas.

Can you walk to the Las Vegas sign?

Yes, the iconic sign is just under one mile south of Mandalay Bay so this is certainly an option. Alternatively, there are a number of free trams that go near its location if you’re staying at one of the casinos owned by MGM Grand, from where it is then a short walk from Mandalay Bay. 

The best choice is to park in the Clark County parking lot which was added in 2008 to aid in the convenience of reaching the sign. It’s also now a lot safer, featuring crosswalks and pedestrian traffic systems.

The Las Vegas sign sits across from the Bali Hai Golf Club and the now-closed Klondike Hotel and Casino on its west side. Its closest hotel is now the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, a 43-storey luxury resort owned and operated by MGM Resorts International.

The Welcome To Las Vegas sign is one of the most iconic signs in the world, recognizable by millions of people around the globe. The bright neon lights, proudly standing sky-high, overlook the Las Vegas Strip, like a welcoming sentinel.

But is it even worth seeing? How do you get there? Where is it? We’ll cover all that and more below.

What Is The Welcome To Las Vegas Sign?

The Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is a 25-foot iconic landmark of Las Vegas, arguably the most famous attraction in the city. It’s definitely one of the most popular free attractions in Las Vegas , and one you should make it a point to visit!

Visitors come from around the world to see this sign and take their picture in front of it, as a lasting memory of a potentially otherwise foggy vacation. It’s a popular stop for folks visiting Las Vegas, whether this is their main destination or they’re stopping by on a southwest US road trip .

Designed in 1959 by Nevada artist Betty Willis, and erected by Western Neon, the sign welcomes visitors at the very end of the Strip. Fortunately for souvenir shops everywhere, Betty Willis never trademarked her design, with legends claiming that she wanted it to be her gift to the city.

The front of the sign shows the famous words, “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada”. The lesser photographed back side of the sign holds an endearing message of “Drive Carefully, Come Back Soon”.

Where Is The Welcome To Las Vegas Sign?

The Welcome To Las Vegas sign is situated at the very end (or beginning) of the Las Vegas Strip. Although most people don’t know or care to differentiate, the Sign is actually located in the city of Paradise, as is most of the Strip itself.

The actual address is 5100 S Las Vegas Boulevard, Paradise, Nevada 89119.

As you can see in the picture above, the closest big Strip hotel is Mandalay Bay, which is definitely within walking distance.

The sign itself stands in the median of the road, with crosswalks on both sides.

How Do You Get To The Welcome To Las Vegas Sign?

So, now that you know where it is, how do you get there?

Well, if you are already at the south end of the strip, you could simply walk. It’s about 3/4 mile to Mandalay Bay , or a mile walk to the Luxor . If you’re much further away than that, you may want to consider an alternative.

Uber or Lyft drivers will happily take you to or from the Welcome To Las Vegas sign, as will Taxi drivers.

If you have a rental car, you can drive yourself, as there is a parking lot on site as well.

The Deuce bus route also will get you to the sign, if you have a bus pass.

Alternatively, you could stop at this iconic sign on your way to see another famous nearby attraction, the Hoover Dam .

When Should You Go?

Just like most of Las Vegas, there’s no closing time on the Sign. You could go any time of day or night, and it would be a good time.

But is there a best time to go?

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, you’ll definitely want to go early. Most Las Vegas visitors aren’t up very early in the morning. Consequently, there are significantly fewer people at the sign before noon.

Another reason to go before noon is the sun. It will be absolutely beating down on you by midday (depending on the season, of course), and no one wants to wait around in the blazing sun, sweating, to take a picture.

If you’re looking to keep the party going, nighttime shots of the Welcome To Las Vegas sign can be a lot of fun. The crowds become a little more rowdy and playful at night, and being allowed to drink in public adds to that fun factor. Plus the neon lights against the dark sky create a great backdrop for your photo!

We recommend pairing your visit to The Sign with a fantastic Las Vegas helicopter tour or an adrenaline-fueled Las Vegas ATV tour, personally. You could even see the sign after you’ve enjoyed one of the many fantastic shows in Las Vegas .

Etiquette At The Sign

Many, if not most, of the time, there will be a line of people at the Welcome To Las Vegas sign waiting for pictures. Sometimes it’s just a handful of people, other times it’s dozens or more.

You will read in some blogs that you can just skip the line and go take your photos, but please don’t be that person. Everyone is politely waiting, both so they can get their own perfect pictures, and so they don’t ruin someone else’s.

Just wait in the line. It moves quickly, and no one wants to be that rude. That way everyone gets to have their pictures with no one else in them.

Are There Photographers At The Sign?

Typically, there will be a professional-looking photographer at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign taking everyone’s pictures for them. We say “professional-looking”, because it is not a hired photographer, and they are not affiliated with the sign in any way. Ultimately, these photographers are simply providing a service for tips .

There is no set price for having them take your photo, although some of them may try to charge you a specific price. However, you do not have to use them, and even if you do, a $5 tip is more than enough as a thank you for them snapping a couple pics for you. Don’t let them scam you into anything more.

If there is nobody there taking pictures for tips, you can always ask the person behind you if they’ll take your pics for you, and then return the favor for them.

What Else Should You Expect At The Sign?

Well, frankly, it’s Vegas. Expect anything!

You may see an entire wedding party taking pictures at the Welcome To Las Vegas sign.

Perhaps you’ll see a proposal.

You may encounter Elvis impersonators, Showgirls, and all sorts of people in various costumes.

Many of them will take photos with you for a tip – again, $5 is more than enough. Don’t let them scam you into paying a certain amount!

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is very little shade at the Sign. Therefore, you definitely will want to bring some water and sunscreen with you. That desert sun is no joke!

Top Tips to Ace Your Visit to the Las Vegas Sign (2024)

There’s no doubt that the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign is one of the city’s most famous tourist attractions . Aside from Elvis and gambling, I’d bet that it’s one of the first things people think of when they think about Vegas. That’s why most visitors to the city want to visit the Las Vegas sign.

Getting a photo at the Las Vegas Sign should definitely be on your Las Vegas itinerary , and, as someone who has been there twice, I promise it’s worth it .

The thing is though, it’s unfortunately not quite as simple as just walking up to the sign and taking a photo! Plus, you probably don’t even know at this point where to find the Las Vegas sign!

In this blog post, I’ll cover everything you need to know to get that perfect shot of yourself in front of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada” sign. It’s one of the best souvenirs you can take home from your trip!

History of the Las Vegas Sign

Way back in 1959 , Clark County realised that they wanted to erect a landmark to represent the city itself, much in the same style that the neon signs of Vegas’ extravagant hotels welcomed their visitors.

The task was passed on to Western Neon, who instructed one of their employees, Betty Willis, to design the Welcome to Las Vegas sign . It was erected in 1959.

Bizarrely, Willis never trademarked her design, instead considering it to be a gift from herself to the city. That’s why you’ll find mugs, T-shirts and lots of other souvenirs all over Las Vegas with the sign’s design on them.

In May 2009 the Welcome to Las Vegas sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Where is the Las Vegas Sign?

You’ll find the 25-foot tall Las Vegas Sign at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South . That’s the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip, and the sign traditionally marks the start of the Strip.

How to Get There

You can drive to the Las Vegas Sign if you really feel like it, but it’s far easier to just catch the Deuce bus there so you don’t have to worry about parking.

You can catch the Deuce from pretty much all of the tourist destinations along the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas, and the Las Vegas Sign has its own designated stop. It’s the perfect solution if you’re visiting Las Vegas without a car!

You’re also able to take an Uber or Lyft to the sign if you’d prefer. You can walk to the Las Vegas Sign, technically, but it’s so hot in Las Vegas that I don’t recommend it unless you’re staying very close by.

Best Time to Visit Las Vegas Sign

A lot of people will say that getting to the Las Vegas Sign super early, around 6am , is the best time to visit the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign. And I get it – you won’t have to queue at that time, and you’ll probably have slightly longer to pose for your photos without feeling rushed.

But who on earth wants to be up at 6am on their vacation??

As someone who actually visited the Las Vegas Sign at 6am, I can confirm that there weren’t many people there at all at that time. However, the sky also isn’t as vibrant blue as it is later in the day, and the sun isn’t quite beaming down on you at this point. If you want a super sunny photo, 6am isn’t the time for you.

Plus, if you want someone to take a photo of you in front of the sign you might struggle at 6am if there are no other tourists around. It’s worth bearing in mind.

And, before you ask, the only reason I was at the Las Vegas Sign at 6am is because it was the first stop on this day tour I took to the Grand Canyon from Vegas. I promise I’m not completely nuts!

I also visited the Las Vegas Sign at around 5pm , and it was much busier, but the queue really wasn’t too bad – which you can read about below in the “tips” section of this post.

So, basically, I don’t really think there is a “best” time to visit the Las Vegas Sign. As long as you’re able to handle the heat if you stop by later in the day, you can visit it whenever you like!

Visiting the Las Vegas Sign at Night

We’ve all see those cool photos of the signs’ neon lights lit up in the dark, so you may be wondering if it’s worth visiting the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign at night.

If you just want to visit to check out the sign and take some photos of it, it’s definitely still worth visiting the Las Vegas Sign at night and in the dark. However, when it comes to getting your photo taken with the Vegas Sign, that’s a whole other story.

Unless you have a really good camera with you, it’s probably not worth trying to get your photo taken at the Las Vegas Sign at night. You’ll barely show up in the photos, and the lights will have glare that’ll show up on the photo if you’re using something like a smartphone.

Standing in Line at the Las Vegas Sign

Unless you manage to visit the Las Vegas sign at 6am, chances are you’ll have to stand in line to get your moment to pose in front of the Las Vegas sign. The line is to be able to have the sign pretty much to yourself and get a head-on shot.

I’ve heard of people waiting in line for almost two hours, but to be honest I don’t understand how that could be possible. Maybe it’s a weekend thing? I visited the Las Vegas Sign at around 5pm on a Wednesday in June and we stood in line for approximately ten minutes before getting our photo opportunity.

If you’re visiting at the weekend, maybe head to the sign early in the morning or allocate more time to spend standing in line.

If you really don’t care about having people in the background of your photo, or that the sign won’t be head-on, you can skip the queue by just standing off to the side and snapping a photo.

Just don’t get in the way of the people that have queued or else you might cause an argument!

My Top Tips for Visiting the Las Vegas Sign

• Much like the rest of the city, the Las Vegas sign never closes, so you can visit it whenever you like.
• Visiting and taking your photo at the Las Vegas sign is totally free . There will be people at the sign pretending to be official photographers, but this is literally not a thing and you’ll be expected to tip heavily, so just ignore them.
• You’ll probably also find a few other characters hanging out at the sign such as a dude in an Elvis suit, or maybe girls dressed as showgirls . They’ll offer to pose in your photos with you, which, obviously, if you want to do this, go ahead! Just remember to always ask the price beforehand so that you don’t end up paying through the nose. These are never free!
• There’s no shade in the queue for the Las Vegas sign, so make sure you have a lot of water and sunscreen with you.
• Pretty much everybody wants to get cool photos with the Las Vegas sign, so if you don’t have anybody to take them for you, just ask the people standing behind you in line (if they look trustworthy, of course). If you offer to take their photos once they have taken yours they’re very likely to help you out.

If there’s one iconic spot in Las Vegas, Nevada that almost everyone wants to photograph, it’s the Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas Sign. Bright and colourful, this sign has since become an icon of the city and is the first Vegas attraction that many visitors pass by when reaching Sin City via road. Here’s how to visit the Las Vegas sign , as well as what to know before you go!

A history of the Las Vegas Sign

The sign has been in place since 1959 when it was funded and erected by Western Neon. The back of the sign reads “Drive carefully. Come back soon” and its address is: 5200 Las Vegas Blvd Las Vegas, NV 89104. Today the sign is owned by Young Electric Sign Company and they lease it to the county.

Designed by Betty Willis, the sign was commissioned by Ted Rogich, who then sold it to Clark County, Nevada. Willis wanted to design an iconic sign that would reflect the thrills and fun of neon Las Vegas, and it’s safe to say that she probably did just that!

Willis also designed other signs on the Las Vegas strip, including the Blue Angel Motel sign and the Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino sign.

The design was never copyrighted as Willis considered the sign to be a gift to her beloved city, though she is quoted as having said “If I had copyrighted the sign, it probably wouldn’t have been used as much and wouldn’t be as famous. But, it would be nice to have a dime for every time it’s been used.”

Since its installation, many have considered the sign to be the official end of the southern portion of the Las Vegas Strip. Since May 1, 2009, the sign has been on the National Register of Historic Places (it was registered on its 50th Birthday, no less).

In 2014, Clark County installed solar panels to illuminate the sign, meaning that even the sign is going green!

How to visit The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” Sign

Prior to 2009, visiting the sign was risky and a little dangerous on account of the fact that there was no legal place to park close by. However, many still made the trip out to see the 25 foot sign on the fringes of the city and so the decision was made that access to the sign should be made easier.

Today, there is a small parking lot and the sign remains free to visit. To reach the sign, leave Vegas and go past the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Park your car in the small designated parking and hop out to take photos. If you don’t have access to a car, then the Hop on Hop Off bus stops at the sign.

Contrary to popular belief, the fabulous Las Vegas sign does not mark the start of the Las Vegas Strip either since it is four miles outside the city limits.

However, since it is still inside the metropolitan region of Las Vegas, many people count it as a Las Vegas staple, and who can blame them? It is an iconic sign that has deep-rooted ties to the city.

With that said, the iconic Las Vegas sign is located a few miles south of the Strip, near the entrance to the ever-busy city center. It is about a 15 minutes walk from Mandalay Bay and a few minutes farther from the Excalibur, Luxor, and the MGM Grand.

The sign is situated across from Bali Hai Golf Club on the west roadside and less than a mile from the Russel Road exit at Interstate 15.

Adjacent to it is a small parking lot that was specifically built to manage the traffic that the ever-popular sign caused around the area. Please remember that the parking has limited space and is only accessible from Las Vegas Boulevard’s southbound lanes.

How to Get to the Las Vegas Sign

One thing to remember before visiting the sign is that there is always a long line. Many visitors take a snap or two during their visit, leading to a huge crowd forming right in front of the sign. You may wait up to 2 hours to get a clear photo.

Early mornings are the less busy times, and you may get a few shots at night when many visitors are busy partying the night away. Regardless, if it is your first time in Las Vegas, a picture of the sign is almost a Biblical must.

With that out of the way, let us dive into the various ways to get to the sign:

• Self-Driving

If you are driving on the northbound lane (from California, Los Angeles, M Resort, or South Point), you will have to make a U-turn into the southbound lane to get into the parking lot. Space is limited (12 car parking only), and you will usually have to wait before confidently letting your engine rest in the parking space.

There is no convenient time when you can get a lot of room in the parking lot, but the early morning hours are a good bet. Once you have parked, proceed to get out of the parking space and walk to the iconic landmark for your photo op.

• Uber/Lyft or Taxi

Uber and Lyft are the most convenient ways of accessing the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign, but they are more expensive. The ride is quicker from the sign, but you only need to walk from your stop after taking the vehicle from the Strip.

• Las Vegas Deuce

The Deuce is a Las Vegas service from Downtown to the Las Vegas Strip. The Deuce bus stop is just next to the historical sign, and you will only have to spend up to $6 for any particular ride on the bus (bus fares can be as low as $3).

Feel free to check with the bus service. It is also important to note that the bus only passes by the area once every 15 minutes.

• Las Vegas Tour Buses

There are many tour buses that are highly recommended for first-timers in Las Vegas. They will take you through many of Vegas’ iconic landmarks, including the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.

7 Interesting Facts About the Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

1. It was designed by Betty Willis in the late 1950s, but she did not copyright the sign

A salesman, Ted Rogich, hired Betty Willis to design the sign in the late 1950s. Ted later sold the sign to Clark County, and it was put up in May 1959.

Betty Willis did not get any dividends from the sale or subsequent usage of the sign-in media platforms since she did not copyright it initially. Because of this, people can freely make clothes branded with the Vegas sign without breaking any copyright laws. However, some restrictions have existed since the Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) acquired the sign in the early 1960s.

2. General Public can use the sign in their media, provided it is under YESCO’s specific guidelines:

• The use of the sign should not interfere with the intellectual property rights of the sign since YESCO has exclusive rights to it.
• The use of the sign should not obscure the YESCO logo that is printed at the bottom side of the sign.
• The usage should not violate YESCO’s trademark rights or be used in competition against YESCO.
• The usage should only entail the installation of a replica of the sign if it is in partnership with YESCO or by YESCO alone.
• The usage should not depict anyone or any organization in a negative light, including YESCO, Las Vegas City, Nevada Tourism, or Clark County.

3. It is completely free to visit and shoot at the Vegas Sign

One thing you will notice when visiting the sign is the many photographers and performers in the area.

Please keep in mind that the Vegas sign is a free attraction that you do not pay for. Anyone who takes your pictures or performs for you at a small fee in the area is doing it out of their free accord to get some tips.

If you’re driving to the Vegas Strip from Los Angeles, M Resort, South Point, or Silverton you’ll have to make a U-Turn after seeing the sign. There’s only an entrance to the parking lot for the sign heading south on Las Vegas Boulevard. The parking lot only has room for 12 cars so you might have to wait for a parking space on a busy day or night.

If you’re not driving while in Las Vegas you can take an Uber, Lyft or Taxi. While returning back to the action will be quick and easy with Uber and Lyft , you might have to wait for a taxi. This mode of transportation is probably the easiest way to access the “Welcome To Las Fabulous Las Vegas” sign.

Walk – Las Vegas Sign

If you’d rather not spend money on a car service to visit the iconic sign, you may be able to walk. The sign is just under one mile south of Mandalay Bay. If you’re staying at a casino in the center or north end of the Vegas Strip you can take the monorail to MGM Grand and cross the street to Excalibur and take a free tram to Mandalay Bay. You can also take the free tram from Bellagio to Monte Carlo then walk to Excalibur and take the free tram to Mandalay Bay. However, you’ll still have a walk of nearly one mile once you get to Mandalay Bay.

Walking may not be a good idea during the summer. Temperatures often reach well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit ( during the day. You’ll still be in the sun for a while after walking to the sign. After your walk, you may have to stand in line to take a photo by the sign. For some reason, there’s no shaded canopy while you wait. The line for photos at the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign can take up to an hour on a busy day or night.

Bus – Las Vegas Sign

One of the least expensive ways to get around the Las Vegas is the RTC bus system. Buses arrive at stops approximately every 15 minutes. Fares start around $3 ( transit fare information ) and passes may be purchased for multiple days. The Deuce runs all the way from downtown Las Vegas to the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and beyond. Just be certain to consult the schedule for updates.

Tram and Uber – Las Vegas Sign

While the following method isn’t free it may be the most efficient way to get there. This hybrid approach will have you take the tram to Mandalay Bay. You’ll then use Uber to drive the mile to and from the sign. Since rates for Uber and Lyft do adjust, you can find an estimate of your Uber Trip or Lyft Trip estimate in advance. Taxis are even more expensive. For completeness you can also use the Las Vegas Monorail for part of your journey.

The Fabulous Las Vegas sign is an iconic Las Vegas attraction and a must-see for many visitors.  It sits at the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. A common misconception is that you will see the sign as soon as you drive from the airport to your hotel. With the way that the landscape of Las Vegas has changed over the years it takes a little bit of work to get to the sign.

For years access to the sign was very limited, but a few years ago Clark County built a small 12-car parking lot.  Prior to that people jaywalked Las Vegas Blvd, scurrying across the street and dodging speeding cars.  I noticed the County has added more parking spaces since my last visit to the sign.  This makes it easier and safer to take those iconic snapshots.  The city installed power trees on the signs west side.  These improvements have made it easier for families to pose for a photo for their family vacation album.  (I also noticed another sign of progress for the iconic sign—it is now solar powered.)

To access the parking lot at the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign you must be going south on Las Vegas Boulevard heading away from Mandalay Bay and toward the Las Vegas Outlet Center.  If you’re driving into town, you will have to make a U-turn past the sign.  Yes, a U-turn is legal in Las Vegas.

Before the tips, we wanted to answer some of the questions that are frequently asked about the Las Vegas Sign. 

What is the address for the Las Vegas sign? 

The address is 5200 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89119. You will want to keep that handy for when you request your Uber. 

Is there a photographer at the Las Vegas Sign? 

The answer to this question is, sometimes. From time to time, semi professional photographers will hang around the sign and snap some photos for a fee. That fee will vary from person to person. But there is not a photographer at the sign who is employed by the city of Las Vegas. 

Can you walk to the Las Vegas sign? 

It all depends. The factors really vary wildly. Here’s what you should consider. The Las Vegas sign is located in what is considered to be the older part of Vegas. The sign is located close to a mile from Mandalay Bay. So that poses the question, are all of the people traveling with you, up for the walk to and from the sign, especially if the temperature is hot? 

Here are 7 tips to help make taking photos at the Las Vegas sign easier.

• Get there early – There always seems to be a line and the parking lot only holds so many cars.  The lot can get completely overwhelmed by the number of visitors to the sign. Chances are the earlier you go the less crowds you will have to contend with, everyone is still sleeping in from the night before.
• Be patient – The line for photo opportunities here can get quite long.  If you’re in a hurry, you can jump out of line and have your photo snapped at an angle instead of from straight on. We think it is worth the wait though.
• Bring your selfie stick – You never know what the crowds will be like and if there will be someone there to help you take a picture. Plus, it’s always a good idea to be careful who you’re handing your camera over to.
• Lend a helping hand –  Offer to take someone else’s photo in front of the sign. Just make sure you don’t have your thumb over the lens or cut everyone’s head off!
• Say cheese – Be creative with your posing. There are lots of fun ways to include the iconic sign in your photo.
• Respect the sign – The sign is from 1959.  Don’t try to carry away chunks like it’s the Berlin Wall.
• Don’t forget to tip – Chances are you’re going to run into Elvis, a couple of showgirls, or a few other impersonators at the sign.  Slip them a couple dollars for taking your vacation pics to the next level.

Las Vegas has several things it’s well known for, like gambling and live entertainment. However, one of the most recognizable sights in the city is the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. But just how many “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs are there?

There have been three main “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs over the years. The original is on Las Vegas Boulevard South. The second was a replica on Las Vegas Blvd. downtown, but it was destroyed. And the third is on Boulder Highway, welcoming visitors driving from Arizona.

In this article, I’ll tell you about the three “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs, where they are, and well as some history about the original sign. I’ll also show you a couple of interesting variations of the sign that you can find around town.  

Where Are the “Welcome to Las Vegas” Signs?

The Las Vegas sign is a famous landmark, and even if you haven’t visited it, you’ve likely seen it in pictures or other media. But is it always the same sign you see? Or are there others in the city waiting to be explored?

For over 40 years, there was only one “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. Erected in 1959, it was the original sign that still stands today on the south end of the Strip in Paradise, Nevada, which is not officially in Las Vegas .

Then, in 2002, the City of Las Vegas built a replica that was actually within the city’s limits. Finally, the city built another replica on Boulder Highway in 2007 as the casinos on the “ Boulder Strip ” wanted their own sign. 

Here are the locations of the “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs in order from oldest to newest:

• 5100 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89119 (the original sign)
• Las Vegas Boulevard and 4th Street (was destroyed and is no longer there)
• Boulder Highway, just north of Tropicana Avenue (newest sign)

While these are the most well-known “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs, you’ll likely see versions of the sign all over the city, especially on souvenirs like t-shirts. The sign and its design are not copyrighted, so anyone can replicate the sign without any legal consequences. 

A couple of the most popular versions of the sign have a slightly modified saying, such as the “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.” at the entrance to the Fremont Street Experience in downtown . 

The sign looks slightly different from the official sign, but it was still inspired by the original. This version of the sign is 20’ (6.10 m) wide. 

You can also see another variation of the sign at the Chapel of the Flowers , which reads, “M a rried in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada.” The sign is a popular place for newly married couples to snap a picture after they get married at the chapel.

The History of the Original “Welcome to Las Vegas” Sign

Artist Betty Willis, who worked for Western Neon, an electronic display company, designed the sign in 1959. Many people do not know that a woman designed the sign. Unfortunately, she passed away at the age of 91 in 2015. 

She decided not to copyright the sign, as she wanted it to be her gift to the city. She later said that if she had copyrighted the sign, it probably would not have been as popular and recognizable as it is today. 

The Young Electric Sign Company bought Western Neon , Willis’ employer, in the 1960s. They still own the sign today, and it is actually on lease to Clark County, where the sign and Las Vegas are located. 

While Willis never earned any money after creating and not copyrighting the sign, her company did since they owned and leased it. 

The sign joined the National Register of Historic Places list on May 1st, 2009, and it’s on Nevada’s State Register of Historic Places. The state added the sign to the list on December 6th, 2013. 

Destruction of the Sign at Las Vegas Boulevard and 4th Street

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, built within the city limits on Las Vegas Boulevard in 2002, was destroyed in 2016 when a truck crashed into the sign at 6:50 AM on July 17th, 2016. The driver of the car was fine and not injured, and no others were involved in the accident. 

However, the sign did not survive the crash. It was torn down and has not been replaced to this day. Fortunately, the sign was only a replica and not the original one designed by Willis. 

The Original “Welcome to Las Vegas” Sign Today

The Las Vegas sign is hard to miss, as it is 25’ (7.62 m) tall and in the middle of one of the most well-known streets in the world. Tourists flock to the sign to take a picture and commemorate their visit to the city. 

However, until 2008, crossing the street was the only way to get to the sign. As this was a safety risk to everyone, the city opened a parking lot and a paved walkway to make access to the sign safer and easier. 

The parking lot was expanded again in 2012 and 2015 to add more parking spaces.

Get A Piece of The Vegas Sign as a Souvenir

You can always visit Las Vegas and get a picture with the sign or a t-shirt or other souvenir with the sign on it. Or, if you want a unique way to remember the city or sign, you can buy a light bulb that has been used in the original “Welcome to Las Vegas Sign.” 

These lights come with a certificate of authenticity stating their burn date and which light slot they were in. There are only 89 of these lightbulbs used at a time in the sign, and they last quite a while, so having one is somewhat rare and would make for a great remembrance or gift.

How Many “Welcome to Las Vegas” Signs – Conclusion

Today there is one official “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign on Las Vegas Boulevard and one replica sign on Boulder Highway. And a trip to Las Vegas just wouldn’t be complete without making a visit to the original sign on the Strip.

They’re probably talking about the shower, if you’re in the shower with the shower light on, the person on the bed can see you…..you can take a shower with just the bathroom light on though.

After a disappointing stay at Flamingo, we moved over to The Cromwell next door and were delighted by the boutique hotel. The decor was a bit dark, burlesque, and cabaret vibe. However, I felt quite comfortable in the small, quiet, and luxurious surrounding. It was nice to be away from the crowd and loud noises. There weren't as many gaming tables or slots, but we only came here to stay to rest and not play. The beds were big and comfortable, and the only downside was there was no space to store personal items in the fridge, which was stocked with items for a fee.

A good place to stay on the strip. Can't beat the location. Pros: -Smaller hotel, so it is easy to get around. 2-min walk from the elevators to the Strip! -Grabbing coffee at eatwell takes two minutes too, no long lines -No 50-people check-in line -Beds are super comfortable -Helpful crew. Bartenders at Interlude are great -Casino is super chill -Ability to use the pool at Caesars Considerations: -Rooms are nice but showing a bit of wear -One hears the road - and sometimes Drais depending where your room is, but then you fall back asleep because the bed is great

The front desk attendant was sent and was gone for over five minutes, and we finally had to go behind to find where she was and she was back there talking and upset to be interrupted. Even though a group of people were waiting to be checked in. She then proceeded to say that my room was given away to somebody else, and my only option was a more expensive room He called down the next morning to ask why the room was given away, and they said it wasn't and the lady had lied The room that she did give us had electrical problems and was very disappointing

I had been to Drai's a few times over the years, which, of course, is an awesome open air Nightclub. I had thought it would be cool to stay at The Cromwell, so I finally gave it a try. Can't say it was anything special though. Pros - the elevators to the rooms are right in the middle area of the casino area, which is nice, short walk and up to the room. The casino is laid out nicely with the blackjack tables in the middle area and a few nice bar areas. The casino opens out to the strip sidewalks on both corners - short walk to The Flamingo and a short walk over the skyway to the Horseshoe and Paris. The employees, from the front desk, to the dealers, and even the lady in the gift shop were all friendly. Cons - the room, the room, the room. Super small, dark, dingy, aged - no light gets in at all if you are on the North facing rooms side. Only a very small window facing the side of the Flamingo building - no view at all. The light bulbs were very low intensity too, could barely see anything in the room, which I hate. The shower is pretty good, I guess the only saving grace to the room. The door to my room was obviously forced open at one time and I had to literally slam it hard to get it to shut. The video poker here is a disaster. The tightest machines I've ever encountered. You're lucky if you get a full house on these money stealers. Finally, the parking was never explained at check in. I am not used to paying for parking, especially when I'm on a comp. When I left for a short trip after the 1st night, I could NOT get out of the parking lot. I tried scanning my room key, which it directs you to do. I assumed guests wouldn't have to pay for parking - wrong. I tried scanning my Nevada DL, which it scanned and still wouldn't open the gate. It never occurred to me the system was looking for me to pay $25 for less than 10 hours of parking after my arrival. I had to back up my car, go back inside, and complain to the front desk, only to have them FINALLY tell me how the parking works. How about the front desk asking "Did you drive in? Let me explain how the parking fees work......" when you check in? By the way, NV ID only works for 1st 3 hours (worthless) and the room key only works if you are Platinum level on your card. I play high limits and after 1 long day of gambling I only had 1200 points. You need 5000 points to be Platinum! So I guess after 6 visits and dropping thousands of dollars, you MIGHT hit the free parking level (LOL!) The Caesar's Rewards card really is a joke. I had a 'comp' room for 2 nights, but the joke was on me as I was charged a resort fee and taxes on the 2 nights, so not a true comp. Overall, the options are many when getting a room in Las Vegas and I would not recommend staying at The Cromwell.

This Casino on the NE Corner of LVB and Flamingo was small, but it was modern, clean and had an upscale trendy vibe similar to the Cosmopolitan, but much less over-the-top. We just played in the casino for a bit as we were waiting for our reservation time upstairs at Giada. It wasn't overly crowded for a Saturday evening around 6-7p. We only dined and played some slots, so no comments on the rooms or hotel. It's a Caesar's property so keep that in mind as well.

I was so excited to stay here. It had been a goal of mine to stay at this hotel because I love the more gothic/dark look. I was very disappointed. To start off, service to check in was terrible. They were short and not helpful when dealing with previously booked reservations. I went back and fourth with them for almost 2 hours before just booking a hotel room with them and cancelling a previous reservation. if you want a view of anything, don't stay here. I didn't expect to see anything but the driveway between it and the flamingo and that's what I got. I will also say it is quite noisy-can hear the street and the club above. The room was decorated in the gothic/dark fashion I like but was cheap and worn down/tired looking. I also had a giant water spot right outside the bathroom. Inside the bathroom, the shower was a cool design and showed that some updating had been done, but overall I would not stay here again. The bar next to the reception area is the exception. Great and friendly service and tasty drinks.

Customer service is below the cheapest motel. Rude dismissive staff, Caesars properties seem to stop caring past casino floor, little benefit to actually staying here. Holiday Inn next time. Rooms are neat, make up counter is great, and I like the decor. It's a small hotel, so small staff working. Have a small problem? Missing remote to the TV? Make a call and visit and have the staff repeatedly lie about a solution for going on 2 hours.

Damaged furniture

This place is the best little gem in the strip if play your cards right. It's a boutique hotel, with Parisian flat style rooms. I frequent Vegas 3-5x a year, and stay here every time. Here's why I love it: Location - right across from Caesars Palace Size - it's small, easy to navigate Smell - it smells delicious in there all the time Staff - great service and they remember you Parking - garage is directly across from entrance (Free w/ Platinum + players card) Checkin - no 45 person line to checkin - fast and easy Elevators - there only 1 set - you won't get turned around in the casino Now let me add the caveat - the regular rooms are small - it's boutique, Paris flat style. They're dark, compact, with rich wood floors and coloring. If you have the de means (or players card status) ALWAYS, ALWAYS upgrade to a suite. Do it! You won't regret. The suites have - 2 bathrooms, steam shower, luxury tub, full make up desk, refrigerator, and if you get the really cool one- it has a pinball machine. The service is amazing here - because it's small you get personalized service, and staff are actually visible and accessible. Bellhop service is instant, no waiting to call for your bags, they go with you! I've never seen check in line longer than 2 people. The only very slight downside food access, they have a cafe but it's minimal. However, food courts are a quick walk away at Planet Hollywood, Paris, or Flamingo.

Visited the Cromwell this past weekend. The casino was very welcoming, music blasting and you can hear from outside on the sidewalk. When you enter, the scheme is dark red/burgundy and black. Old school classy decor. They have new and old machines on the first floor. It's a pretty small casino play area. They have a bar in the middle of the casino and some towards the back. I saw a coffee/cafe to the left of the casino floor. It was very bright and open for customers. They have a high seating area as well. I only experienced the slot machines here and rating on the play area. The bartender was friendly when I asked for water.

Horrible place to stay! The rooms are dirty, dark, and worn. The towels are like sheets of paper. The rooms are so loud, it's impossible to get a decent nights sleep. There is nothing comfortable about the rooms. I honestly wanted to move hotels it was so bad. The dirty room was disgusting. Would NEVER recommend!

O.j. simpson’s official cause of death revealed.

Two weeks after his death, O.J. Simpson’s official cause of death has been revealed.

Simpson’s attorney Malcolm LaVergne told TMZ that Simpson died of prostate cancer at the age of 76.

LaVergne has possession of Simpson’s death certificate.

Nearly a year ago, Simpson broke the news that he was battling cancer, but didn’t reveal the specific form of cancer.

Last week, LaVergne told the Associated Press that Simpson was cremated at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas.

LaVergne was in attendance for the cremation, but did not reveal who else was there.

2024 NFL Draft Winners and Losers Include Kirk Cousins, Bo Nix and the Jets

The NFL’s Warren Buffet will strike it rich again, Sean Payton gets his future QB, the Jets find a tackle for Aaron Rodgers and defensive players take a back seat to offense.

Outside of the Michael Penix Jr. selection by the Atlanta Falcons, Round 1 of the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday night in Detroit was relatively low on juice. But the quarterback position was the strength of the first round with six signal-callers among the first 12 selections. 

Here’s a closer look at our winners and losers, which included coaches, general managers, quarterbacks, an offensive lineman and a few teams who likely came away disappointed.

Jim Harbaugh

After leaving the NFL amid a tumultuous relationship with the executive structure around him, Jim Harbaugh returns with more prestige and power than ever. This was obvious with the selection of Joe Alt. Harbaugh was pining for an offensive tackle all offseason and wanted the Los Angeles Chargers to be tougher and more physical, and reminiscent of the Wolverine team he left behind. Despite a duo of talented wide receivers on the board, Harbaugh remained steadfast to the plan. Should Alt develop on schedule—I know there were some valid concerns about his height and some of the quirks he has developed as part of his pass set—we will be looking at a very comfortable Justin Herbert two or three years from now.

Green Bay Packers

There is no greater complement to Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst than Raheem Morris taking Michael Penix Jr. at pick No. 8. Let’s think about what Morris is putting on the line here. This is the first draft pick of his second head coaching tenure. In short, a zero margin for error selection. Nevermind your thoughts on Penix; Morris saw what the Packers were able to do with Jordan Love and staked his first-round selection on a quarterback who, if all goes well, will not play for the next two years. 

Kirk Cousins

I did enjoy the “ Kirk Cousins was not pleased ” tidbit among all the insiders after the selection of Penix when Cousins seems to be missing the bigger picture. This absolutely gives him one more chance at free agency at the absurdly perfect time with multiple teams bidding for his services. This man is going to cash in again deep into his forties and have a chance to buy an NFL franchise faster than Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. The NFL’s Warren Buffet will strike again. In all seriousness, how are we not already projecting his age-37 season to take place in San Francisco after the 49ers’ refusal to sign Brock Purdy to a long-term contract? 

Nix was selected in the first round by the Broncos.

I spent some time with Nix during the pre-draft process for our digital draft preview cover , and I was struck by how humbled he was by his journey. Nix was benched and shoved out the door at Auburn where his father played quarterback. He had to transfer to Oregon, where he was labeled a product of Kenny Dillingham, and the following year set the NCAA record for completion percentage without the offensive wunderkind coach. He’s 24, having played his first college game against Justin Herbert and now gets to play under Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos. 

Speaking of Nix’s journey, Andy Reid’s quote to us a few weeks back in the cover story seems prescient. “We’re all happy these guys are throwing more at the college level,” he told me. Reid and I were talking about the fact that there are more older quarterbacks with knowledge of multiple systems entering the draft pool. Penix, Jayden Daniels and Nix both played at two schools and had more than 40 starts. I’m confident this is the new normal, and that we’ll see a less turbulent passage from the college game to the pros. 

I know that some teams liked Latham better than Joe Alt. And I’m sure that Latham would have liked to have been the first offensive lineman drafted in 2024. But, through a series of events that brought Brian Callahan to the Tennessee Titans, and, subsequently Bill Callahan to Tennessee, Latham absolutely lucked out. In my mind, the former Alabama tackle sidling up with the best offensive line coach in the NFL guarantees him a long and prosperous career.  

New York Jets

I had the Jets trading up for a wide receiver in my surprisingly half-decent mock draft, not because I thought that’s what they should do, but because I felt that’s what they would do. The one issue with being perpetually all in is that the eagerness from ownership can begin to lean on the decision-making processes of the general manager. The pragmatic move was to backstop two excellent veteran tackles in Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses with a raw prospect such as Olu Fashanu and that’s exactly what they did. 

Chicago Bears

The Bears selected Odunze and Caleb Williams in the first round Thursday night.

The Bears staying at No. 9 with their second first-round pick and getting Rome Odunze feels like incredibly good luck. But with Ryan Poles, Ian Cunningham and the rest of that front office, it may just be an intimate understanding of the board. Odunze was my favorite receiver outside of Marvin Harrison Jr., and, more importantly, appears to be an elite human being which can be just as important when it comes to building a roster. 

Obviously, Cousins now understands that his time with the Atlanta Falcons will likely be defined by the guaranteed money on his contract. While I don’t know what he envisioned being 35 and coming off a torn Achilles, and I don’t think he’ll cause a fuss in the locker room, there is something difficult about having your replacement selected before starting a job on Day 1. Cousins is competitive and there will now be some additional pressure on him to accept a role of mentorship, which was thrust on him after the Falcons selected Penix. I understand why the Falcons waited to tell him, especially because Atlanta was able to fly under the radar and not become the target of a trade up from either Denver or Minnesota.  

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah

The Minnesota Vikings GM should take comfort. Last year I questioned Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio for his maneuvering of the board and Caserio ended up with a playoff berth and dual rookies of the year. I wrote about the J.J. McCarthy pick here , but from a broader perspective, I wonder whether Adofo-Mensah was trying to get too cute. Instead of inching up for QB5 and then inching up again for EDGE2, why wouldn’t you go all in for one of those players? Specifically quarterback. Dallas Turner is great, and I had him projected to the New England Patriots in my mock draft because I felt like he’d fit a Belichick-inspired system. He’ll get along great with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. But this defense feels far away, and the way to ultimately compensate would be to elevate the offense to the point where they can outscore opponents consistently. Additionally, there were enough smart people believing that there was a serious talent dropoff after pick No. 15 to make me wonder if the Vikings were foolishly investing in a kind of Bermuda Triangle portion of the draft. McCarthy isn’t going to immediately be the quarterback who can put up 28 points per game. This felt like the draft for the Vikings to tear their shirts off and kick the door down. We certainly didn’t get that. 

Draft intrigue

Outside of the Penix selection, which surprised many (but shouldn’t, again, because the quarterback position was the strength of this draft, and was far superior to the middling defensive class that it represented a smart long-term value play), Round 1 was relatively low on juice. We knew that Caleb Williams was going No. 1 due to his refusal to play along with the pre-draft charade. He took one pre-draft visit and was throwing with his future teammates weeks ago. We also knew Daniels, for roughly a month, was QB2. And, again, the back end of this first round felt reminiscent to the 2013 draft, where the talent pool was relatively thin and centered on one side of the ball. This was a great draft for those of us who like to tout the fact that we got more than four picks in our mock draft correct, which usually means it’s a bit of a sleeper for those tuning in at home. 

Defensive players…forever?

Latu was the first defensive player selected in the first round.

The first defensive player selected didn’t go until No. 15. Laiatu Latu broke the longest streak of offensive players picked in the modern draft era . While this feels circumstantial—Latu, had he not come into the draft with a medical red flag, would have probably been taken in the top five, and this was generally a down year after a few consecutive seasons with strong edge rushing and defensive back presence—is there a bigger question to be asked here? I’m not saying defense isn’t important, but do we recalibrate our scales after every rule shift favors the offense? At some point, does it make more sense to simply amass more offensive talent than it does to build a stout defense? It feels more like the value defensively is in coordinators who can throw a diverse schematic library at an opponent, a la Steve Spagnuolo, than it is hoping to put together a group of shut-down corners who will inevitably get called for pass interference multiple times in a game for grazing the wide receiver’s nameplate. 

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys trading down after hiding all offseason felt a bit like a middle finger to their fanbase. There were still some impact players on the board, but instead Dallas handed the pick to a conference rival who seems to be taking their disposition as a contender more seriously. The Cowboys are acting like the Patriots at the back end of the Tom Brady era, starving the roster of vital veteran talent and also just hurling draft capital into the wind. This has been a miserable offseason for Dallas, and it’s only going to get worse as the team attempts to lowball CeeDee Lamb, one of the best receivers in the NFL (who just got more expensive after the A.J. Brown deal ) and the best defensive player in the NFL, Micah Parsons (who shouldn’t rest until he soundly tamps down the Nick Bosa contract). Some teams don’t deserve good players.  

Las Vegas Raiders 

Brock Bowers is great, but how effective is a two-tight end combination when it’s Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell under center? Don’t get me wrong, I love a dynamic 12-personnel offense and I think it allows teams to negate a lot of deficiencies (perhaps helping the Raiders elevate their QB play by forcing more defenses into vanilla base-type looks). There was a reason I was so high on the Packers’ draft last year and why I’ve been bullish on the Chiefs to find an adequate TE2 for Travis Kelce toward the back end of his career. I don’t know ultimately how interested the Raiders were in taking a quarterback, but even if Bowers has a Sam LaPorta outlier season for a rookie tight end, it seems like the immediate value won’t be there. This was a wide-ranging QB class with a flavor for almost anyone, and for Las Vegas to miss out on McCarthy when it seemed like the Vikings simply had to toss in a few more nickels, may look bad in hindsight if the class of 2025 doesn’t offer any options.  

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo handed the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes in 2017, and has spent the last half-dozen years suffering for it. And now it allowed the Chiefs to come up and draft Xavier Worthy, a dynamic, multi-tooled receiver with Tyreek Hill vibes who will contribute heavily to the new kickoff return setup and will be an immediate all-distance threat in an offense featuring speed motion more beautifully than any team in the league. Also, the Bills didn’t really net that much on the trade. According to ESPN analytics, it was one of the cheapest first-round trade ups of the past two decades. So, why on earth did they hand the biggest impediment to them reaching a Super Bowl an excellent player? I get that Sean McDermott has respect for Andy Reid, but how do you even let this call get patched through? Also, it’s not like we didn’t know the Chiefs were going receiver here. The Bills are in desperate need at the position themselves.
