Solo Female Travelers Tours (Our tours!)

Bucket list experiences and unusual places for life changing connections with local women and fellow travelers, great food & wine, fabulous company, culture, nature, wildlife and so much more! Our trips are designed by women, for women and are led by women.

We offer a range of luxury, personally curated experiences that have all the ingredients of a well-deserved vacation and adventure expeditions to unheard of places.

What makes us unique:

  • We support local female owned businesses that make a difference and we amplify their efforts at equality. We believe in the power of putting our money where our mouths are and we aim for 100% female powered tours. Other women-only tour companies hire male guides or support businesses fully staffed by men.
  • All our tours are female led , without a local female guide, there is no tour. We are not in it for the money, we want to shape the travel industry and provide more employment opportunities to women. We don’t fly in guides from overseas, we 100% trust our local guides.
  • Many of our female travel tours are accompanied by a professional photographer to capture unforgettable moments and candid instants that will stay with you. We want you to be in the moment and not experience a trip through your camera.
  • No single supplements: Come solo and we’ll pair you with another traveler.

Our destinations

woman travel tours

+Hand picked curated experiences where every moment is special and unique. No buses and ticking off boxes, only meaningful connections and moments that will stay with you. Destinations nobody else goes to. Designed by women, for women and led by women. Photographer onboard several trips. Support women at the destinations.

-Limited available as we do not aim to become a massive tour company and keep our groups to a maximum of 10-14 guests only.

Have a look at the highlight videos of some of our trips:

Surf Getaways

As the name of this women travel company indicates, Surf Getaways is an Australian-based company offering surf holidays in various locations around the world.

Founded by a surf instructor with years of experience teaching at a fixed surf school and a surf lover, the company now offers getaways where both newbies and experienced surfers can enjoy a sports-holiday with lots of vitamin C.

Tours are for all levels and some of them allow non-surfing companions to join too.

+Small group, premium and unique experiences all about surfing with very experienced teachers.

-Trip geared towards surfing and less appealing for non-surfers. Destinations are still very Asia-Pacific focused.

Well-established Condé Nast is the publisher of several popular magazines among which Vogue, GQ and Condé Nast Traveler. They also launched a high-end line of women-only tours called Women Who Travel for women traveling together to appreciate the finer things in life.

These tours have a food and cultural focus and are organized by El Camino , curated by the Condé Nast Editors who also run a podcast on female travel and a large Facebook group.

Almost all tours include lots of evening music and dancing, cooking classes and real exposure to the local culture. There is also a trip photographer to take all those candid shots.

El Camino tours are quite different from the majority of other tour companies. They are bold and immersive in the real sense of the word. They feature artists in all areas, from food to crafts to music, and none of the usual touring. No checklist, no museums, no monuments.

+Small group, premium and unique experiences that are just not easy to find on your own. Installment plan. Lots of food and drinks, music and art. In-house photographer taking shots for you.

-Prices are on the high-end of the scale, in fact these are the most expensive of the trips on this list averaging about $300-$600 per day.

Woander Tours

woman travel tours

Woander Tours is a great option for when you want to explore on a guided tour, on your own. They offer self-guided audio tours in cities like Edinburgh and Dublin, and give you the tools you need to explore your destination by yourself, but never alone.

In taking one of these tours, you will connect with your destination through the stories you’ll hear, the places you will see, and the people you will meet along the way.

These tours are carefully created to give you a local, unique and authentic experience; they work with local historians, small business owners, guides and travel bloggers to create the best possible itineraries.

The best part? You are in control of your own experience. They simply guide you to their favourite spots, landmarks and hidden gems at your destination. Each tour comes with a printable PDF-guide with directions as well as the audio.

+Connect with local people and experiences, and support local economies. No need to travel with a group or guide if you want to explore on your own time.

-There are limited destinations right now, so we look forward to more guides being released soon. Make sure you remain conscious of your surroundings with headphones in.

Purposeful Nomad

Purposeful Nomad focuses on what the name indicates, making sure that their trips have a positive impact, as they say “responsible, rewarding, safe, sustainable and ethical travel for women, by women”.

Their focus is on women-only, intimate and small group trips that go deeper and do not focus on the main tourist sites but on responsible tourism. Instead, you will learn something new like how to shear an alpaca or cook using traditional methods.

Days are spent at farms, beaches or at local foundations and charities fighting for women’s rights; there are yoga sessions and slow days by the sea. The emphasis of Purposeful Nomad is on slow travel.

+Get exposed to (mostly) women-owned charities and organisations from around the world and relax with lots of free time to simply take it all in. The purpose is to return recharged.

-Experiences tend to shy away from major tourist sites (not bad per se) and may not cover the key tourist attractions. Prices are on the high side.

WanderTours

Started, and almost always led, by Beth in 2008 as a means for her to take other women on some of the places she loves, WanderTours offers a small list of tours for women only (with some exceptions) that feel more like a group of friends getting together than a group tour company.

Beth encourages future guests to friend her on Facebook and get to know her better to decide if they would enjoy going on a trip.

She also hosts the She’s Bold Podcast , in which she shares stories of extraordinary women who inspire in many areas like travel, music, fitness, and more.

+The only women’s adventure travel company that organizes trips to Papua New Guinea giving you a unique opportunity (if pricey). Cozy and friendly, as if you were traveling with a friend.

-On the pricey side but this also includes a portion of the cost devoted to a local charity that usually works with women or children. Group tours are a bit larger than others (up to 16 guests).

Adventures in Good Company

Founded in 1999 by Marian Marbury, Adventures in Good Company focuses on adventure travel for women with emphasis on women of all ages.

Their trips have an outdoor focus and involve various level of activity depending on your choice. There is hiking across Greenland or the villages of Cinque Terre, kayaking in the sea, exploration in the Amazon or multi-sport trips with a bit of everything. Birders can marvel at Guyana and seafarers can sail in Turkey.

Because of the focus on nature, Adventures in Good Company has a strong responsible tourism charter and follows the leave no trace principles. Traveling slowly and being a fully remote team also helps contribute to sustainable travel.

In 2020 Kelly Kimple assumed ownership of the company, bringing fresh energy and a commitment to the vision and philosophy of guiding on which Adventures in Good Company was founded.

+A true outdoor tour company giving you the unique chance to explore the world on foot. Long years of experience. Wide portfolio of trips in the US. Clear audience of older women.

-The website feels a bit 2000s and is clunky and time consuming to navigate and filter due to the amount of trips (calendar view works best). Very US-focused in audience.

The Girls’ Guide to Paris

Founded by Doni, an American living in France, primarily with a focus on the country, The Girls’ Guide to Paris now offers 50+ different trips to destinations around the world with a touch of luxury, a welcome glass of champagne and a default no sharing policy.

You will find holidays ideal for mature women like wine trips, writing retreats, artist-themed itineraries and a wide range of destinations and curated trips to satisfy any craving. All solo travel female packages are mid to high end and prices are offered per room, but you can get a discount if you book with a friend.

Special SFT perk: Mention you heard about them from us and you will receive $100 OFF from any booking.

+Very strong culture, food & wine focus with a long tradition and track record delivering fabulous experiences for mature women.

-Trips are on the expensive side since the positioning is high end. No option for pairing guests to save on accommodation.

Damesly goes beyond typical group tours and focuses on travel, writing and photography workshops and trips of self-discovery where there are elements of coaching, mentorship and business brought together to help you find clarity or direction.

The company is the travel arm of Go Girl Guides and Women’s Travel Fest and has a strong bond in the creative community appealing to women who may work in the field, although open to everyone.

Trips are mid to high end and have a focus on culture and beautiful sites. Destinations are photogenic and perfect for those who love to photograph.

+Like-minded creative community of women with similar passion means you will be among your own. Workshop trips have a skill-building element. Reasonably priced for the mid-high end range of accommodations.

-Prices are on the high side. Guides are most likely foreign and not local. While guests are female, the businesses supported are often not.

WHOA – Women High on Adventure

WHOA is a boutique adventure-focused women travel company founded by Allison and Danielle in 2013 to offer active holidays such as hiking to Everest Base Camp or Kilimanjaro with a sustainable and responsible twist.

Their trips put travelers in touch with local women to facilitate cultural interaction and they are all about empowerment. The company works with small local female-owned businesses instead of bigger ones.

WHOA is all about inclusion and has even launched trips for plus sized women. As they put it “WHOA women find comfort in the uncomfortable. We bask in the sun and dirt. Never afraid to break a nail, a sweat or a stereotype. Adventure is an outlook and it’s how we choose to live.”

There are two types of trips on offer, adventures and expeditions and WHOA can also organise your own private group trip. The majority of the trips have a maximum of 12 to 18 participants.

+Fun and unapologetic with a strong responsible and sustainable tourism focus and women empowerment.

– Small tour company so limited list of tours and all very hardcore active (except for the Oktoberfest which may be tougher on the liver than the legs!). Some trips can be quite large (18 pax for Kilimanjaro). Although guests are female, guides aren’t always female or local.

Wild Women Expeditions

Wild Women Expeditions has been around for over 30 years and focuses on adventure and active trips for women of all ages.

They have wide portfolio of trips to many countries in the world all under the same active common denominator. They also have yoga retreats and safari expeditions.

As they put it “We encourage you to let go and get wild! We value freedom of expression and want to give you the space to maybe see yourself in a new light, outside of your regular responsibilities and everyday roles.”

Wild Women Expeditions also organises private trips for groups and has a couple of trips for teenage girls.

The company focuses on being in the moment so all trips start with a discussion on photography and videography and recommends guests to be in the moment and void constant social media updates. Likewise, they encourage participants not to bring drones.

+Experienced women’s tour company. Wide portfolio with several departures for some of the trips means it is easier to find the right one for you. 7-day risk free cancellation policy and the ability to pay in instalments.

-Slow and clunky website that makes it hard and time-consuming to search and compare. If you are someone who likes to document everything or take lots of photography and videography you may find the trip philosophy to be against it.

The Women’s Travel Group

The Women’s Travel Group was established in 1992 and has a portfolio of women trips that usually include more than one country and cater to an older demographic interested in having a more in-depth conversation about the culture, the politics and the history of a place. As its President, Phyllis Stoller, put it to us, “Our guides are for smart women who bring complicated questions.”

You will find some of the popular destinations as well as more unusual ones like Albania, Georgia or Madagascar.

Accommodation tends to be on the higher end and meals better than average. Emphasis is on culture and food and the itinerary is closed. No shopping stops and no free time. Prices are mostly all inclusive and there are no surprises or hidden costs.

Phyllis continues, “We often have a speaker who talks about the dark side of a country. For example, a human rights worker in Chile under Pinochet; an economic development expert in Albania; a Fistula Doctor in Ethiopia. We like controversy to get the group to talk.”

+More in-depth conversation to truly get under the skin of a place, unique to The Women’s Travel Group. No extras that aren’t included. Packed itinerary gets a lot in.

-Closed itinerary means you need to love the whole (or you can skip some parts). The website is a bit clunky; Information is hard to locate and compare so it might be best to reach out to them directly for the trips you are interested in.

AdventureWomen

Founded in 1982, AdventureWomen runs one of the oldest female travel group trips with a focus on adventure travel for women over the age of 35 who want to step outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves.

The company was purchased by the current owner Judi Wineland and her two daughters in 2016, and today runs trips to 65 countries. As the company says, they are not a travel company but a relationship one.

In an interview Wineland says, “We’re kind of a tribe of sorts, seeking other like-minded spirits to share our adventures with. So, if you want to make travel experiences really transformational  for  women, it’s probably best if women are driving the ship.”

AdventureWomen has one of the widest portfolios of destinations and a strong and well-established track-record with a guide-ambassador combo per trip, surveys and research into female travel and lots more.

Like most other women travel groups in this list the company is female-owned and works with female-owned businesses. AdventureWomen also organizes private trips for your female group.

+Company with long experience in the industry. Huge array of destinations and a focus on community and relationship.

-Prices are very high for some of the trips considering they are for shared accommodations. Age restriction is both a plus and a minus and you should expect a higher age representation.

Explorer Chick

Explorer Chick is another a female adventure travel company for women traveling together to conquer new heights, and we mean that literally as well as figuratively.

They shy away from luxury and premium tours and instead focus on getting you back in nature and staying in the purest accommodations; tents, yurts and huts.

As they say “We promise hysterical laughing, unladylike behavior, strings of cuss words, and happy exhaustive fatigue on all of our adventures”. Or, as the founder puts it, “we would do cool shit in cool places with cool chicks!”

I think you get the gist of the company’s philosohy!

Besides organizing women only adventure tours, Explorer Chick also offer day trips and long weekend getaways within the US which consist of adventures and hiking trips across the country. They can also organize private departures for any of their advertised tours where men are welcome to join.

+Strong focus on having fun and little tolerance for moaners and complainers who will be removed from the trips.

-Shorter trips are on the expensive side. Dietary needs may not be catered for (in which case you may have to bring your own food). No instalment plans.

Sights and Soul Travel

Sights and Soul Travel is a women travel package company that specializes in high-end women travel tours which include premium experiences and activities, wine and food and upscale hotels and hit the traditional tourist sites.

Expect wine tasting, spas, wellness elements and fine dining built into a more traditional and cultural trip.

Tours have a lot of activities and a packed itinerary so you will get to cover a lot. Because of the type of trip, they are appealing to mother-daughter getaways and the company states that their average guest is above the age of 55.

+Huge array of destinations with a more traditional travel style: buses, cities and main sites. Most of the trips are almost all inclusive.

-The itineraries are packed which can be a Pro and a Con. Prices are on the high-end for a shared accommodation. Groups can be a bit larger than other companies (up to 16 guests)

Femscape Sojourns

Femscape Sojourns was founded in 2018 and is a boutique mother-daughter small group travel company that organizes trips based on the traveler’s age. There are trips for women in their 20s and 30s and for women over 40. The company also has specific mother-daughter trips.

Founded by Tami and Latifah, Femscape Sojourns wants to empower women in the places they visit so they work and support local women-owned businesses. The idea is that travelers preferences change with age and that is why trips are tailored to various age groups.

In keeping with that, the mother-daughter duo escort the group in their age range.

+Small groups of 6-12 women. Unique mother-daughter trips for bonding. Cozy and personalised, hosted by the owners. Some trips have a free day you can customise.

-As the company is relatively new, the range of trips is very limited to Barcelona and Morocco.

Fit & Fly

Fit & Fly takes the idea of a fitness and wellness retreat to the next level with premium & luxury accommodation, local exploration and world class instructors.

Guests start the day with a fitness class and some evenings end with yoga, but the rest of the day is spent exploring the destination. Fitness is at the core of the trips.

+Premium accommodations and renowned fitness instructors flown in for the occasion.

-Very high price, especially for the single rooms. Limited options for solo travelers to share with other as many rooms are for single use or friends booking together.

SmarTours is a US company that specializes in creating exciting international tours at accessible prices. The company focuses and responsible and sustainable travel with groups an average of 23 guests.

SmarTours has an exclusive section of women-only tours, aimed at mature women who want to have a once in a lifetime experience. They inspire and empower women to travel and offer many immersive female-focused experiences in their trips.

Some of their top women-only tour destinations are Jordan, Egypt and Turkey. A few of their amazing female-focused experiences are: a modern Egyptian women lecture and connecting with Jordanian local women.

They also have a FB group where women can find a roommate or connect with fellow female guests before their trip.

+Immersing international trips at very affordable prices. Some trips have no single supplements at all. Exotic and fascinating destinations with mature women-focused experiences.

-Limited destinations for their women-only tours. Limited single room options. There is a single supplement in the majority of the tours. Large groups of up to 23 guests to keep costs down.

Road scholar women

Road scholar is known for its educational trips that are intensely focused on culture, learning and getting deep into the history of a place through lectures and sessions on various topics.

Besides their general trips that are open to anyone, the Road Scholar Women trips are exclusively for women. Some of their itineraries are exclusively women-only and designed with women in mind, whereas others are just women-only departures with the same general program.

+In-depth cultural and historical understanding with lectures led by specialists and experts on various cultural aspects of the country.

-Limited destinations for their women-only tours. Very large groups of 13 to 24 guests means the experience is different than that of a smaller group tour company.

Other women travel groups to look out for

Besides the above women’s tours there are a few other tours for women worth mentioning, as follows:

  • Dare to detour offers retreats in the US that are more about self-discovery and taking a break from your daily life to pause, re-frame, rethink, and perhaps find yourself and your path again.
  • Women traveling together offer solo traveler tours for women in the US. Trips are usually 6-7 days long and mostly culturally-focused.
  • Living Big Travel is not an exclusive women travel group company but rather a custom-tour company that organizes trips for solo travelers so you can reach out to them if you wish to go on an adventure on your own.
  • She Hit Refresh is a community which also organizes retreats in Spain and Morocco for women over the age of 30 who want to make a big change and pursue a life of travel. As the founder puts it “[the retreats are] a magical week of exploration, introspection, and inspiration!”
  • Adventurous Women is an Australian company who offer tours, day trips, retreats and many memorable experiences throughout Australia. Most of the women who join them come solo and there’s a wide age range. Depending on the kind of adventure you’re into, you can find everything from hiking to water-based trips.
  • Diva Destinations is a UK company that specializes in bringing together lesbian & queer women on group holidays. They have group tours in the UK, US, Norway and Portugal.

Why you should join a women travel group

Women want to travel and sometimes, they don’t have the right friend or travel companion to do so. While many choose to travel on their own ( watch our mini-documentary to find out more), many prefer to join a group. Both choices are amazing and rewarding, if you’re still thinking about it, get some inspiration from our solo travel quotes .

Although it sounds like an oxymoron, solo travel tours are a great alternative for inexperienced travelers who prefer the comfort of an organized tour where they can make new friends and gather the courage to go it alone in the future.

Several companies have sprung in recent years to facilitate women traveling together via group trips, hangouts or meet-up groups. Besides our own women only group trips, we also created a sub-group for solo female travelers wanting to swap homes, hangout or host other members of the community in a safe environment.

Frequently asked questions about women only tours

What about singles supplements for single travelers.

All the tour agencies we mentioned before, have this amazing thing in common! They want you to avoid paying a singles supplement as a single traveler.

Single travelers can either choose to pay a single supplement for a single room, but solo travelers are encouraged to share a room with a fellow traveler without paying a singles supplement.

I’m not from the US. Can I join these tours?

Yes! Most of the above mentioned travel agencies welcome international travelers. Even though we couldn’t find too many travel agencies with women only tours in Europe or for that manner, outside of the USA, you can still join the tours.

We contacted all of these agencies to ask them if international travelers are welcome. All of the agencies that replied to us, have answered positive to that question. So don’t let borders hold you back and just choose one of the amazing and adventurous tours and send them an inquiry!

Are these lesbian Travel Groups?

The Women Only travel groups mentioned in this article are not specific lesbian tours. Although many of these tour groups are frequently booked by single lesbian women or lesbian couples, they are not designed for lesbian women. However, you should not let this hold you back from booking one of these tours.

All the above mentioned tours welcome all women, without judging people for any reason. Women of all ages, race, sexual orientation, and fitness level are welcome to join the women only tours.

How do I find lesbian tours?

And, as always, don’t forget to take your travel card with you, in order to pay less commission on foreign currencies!

You might be doing interesting activities, so it’s a good idea to get some good travel insurance !

You’ll probably spend some time relaxing or in transit. For those hours, take a few great travel books with you!

Women travel groups - Conclusion

There is obviously a need for tour arrangements for women only. During our research for this post, we noticed that all of these travel agencies sell out their tours amazingly quick! The concept is not only immensely popular, but it just works!

Another positive lesson we learned during our research is that these travel agencies not only organise women only tours. They also work towards the empowerment of women in the world. The travel world is a very male saturated market and women often have a difficult time finding their way and making it to the top.

For that reason, it’s very important that we have more and more women breaking through in this market. They strive to empower women worldwide. And they also provide valuable jobs for female guides, porters and hospital workers all over the world!

In this article, we gathered loads of tour agencies that focus on women only tours. We managed to find 26 awesome women travel groups and tour agencies. And we really hope you enjoyed this list!

Do you own a travel agency that focuses on women only tours? Let us know in the comments or send us a message so we can check out your website and tours!

Don’t want to travel alone travel with women’s groups and explore the world..

If you’re a woman who’s seeking to experience everything the world has to offer, then you’re in the right place!

After all, you’re a trailblazer — a pioneer. You’re our kind of people.

While everyone else is answering emails and checking mundane tasks off of their to-do list, you can be found daydreaming about your next glorious hike, snorkeling with magical wildlife, or stargazing in the desert sky.

You’re a travel enthusiast. It’s in your nature to keep moving. Keep meeting new people. Keep discovering new things.

We know you because we are you. And at Canyon Calling, we have an insatiable desire to explore every corner of the world, just like you do.

But let’s face it… It can feel impossible to find friends and family who have the same passion for adventure — not to mention the time and income.

And traveling alone as a woman sounds lonely and — let’s be real — kind of scary.

We get it! That’s exactly why we do what we do. We design thrilling adventures for women so you can hike, kayak, zipline, white water raft, and more around the globe. By touring in groups of like-minded women, you’re able to travel the world safely and confidently.

What makes Canyon Calling’s women’s travel groups so special?

We’re not a typical travel company… For us, it’s all about empowering women as we design fun, active vacations. And there are a lot of reasons women choose to return to Canyon Calling and book tours with us time after time. Here are some of their favorite reasons:

Our tours are female-only

Well, first of all, there are no men. The point of all-female travel isn’t to exclude men, but sometimes a break from the dudes feels right. In our groups of just women, you’ll feel free to completely be yourself. You’ll be surrounded by nurturing, encouraging females who want to see you succeed.

So as you’re trying out white water rafting for the first time, you’ll feel lifted up and confident — not self-conscious. The company of women is good for our souls. Whether you’re partnered, retired, divorced, or simply looking for a vacation for women only, we have a tour for you!

We travel in small groups of women

This ensures that every member of the group feels connected to each other and cared for by our Trip Leaders. Plus, when we’re in a small group, it’s much easier for us to get around and experience the most unique aspects of each destination.

We foster  connection

When women travel together, something magical happens. We inherently start to open up and trust each other. As we explore unfamiliar locales and try new things together, our guards come down.

We have each other’s backs. We share our stories with one another. We laugh until we cry. And we bond into a tight tribe. You’ll begin the trip surrounded by strangers, but you’ll end it with friendships that last a lifetime.

Our tours are affordable

To empower more women to explore the world, we’re proud to deliver quality vacations at a very reasonable price. We believe every woman should have the opportunity to discover herself through travel — and that’s why we offer  affordable, all-inclusive pricing.

We’re committed to planning every detail of your trip with heart, soul, and intentionality.

You deserve a wonder-filled and memorable adventure. And we’re passionate about delivering exactly that! Our vacations are:

  • Multi-activity —  So you can experience many different elements of your destination.
  • Active —  You’ll be able to keep up if you’re moderately fit (we define that as able to walk 5 miles in one day on uneven terrain).
  • Delicious —  You won’t find any fast food on our tours… We’re foodies, and we’re here to help you experience authentic local cuisine, savor wine around the world, and visit craft breweries!
  • Clean and comfortable —  Our accommodations are hand-picked for cleanliness, comfort, location, and uniqueness.

And if you’re looking for a more  relaxing  adventure, we have something for you, too. We offer softer tours that are focused more on a leisurely pace, food and wine experiences, upscale lodging, spa activities, and milder outdoor activities.

Canyon Calling has been empowering women for over two decades.

And each one of them holds a special place in our hearts. Here’s what some of them had to say:

Words cannot begin to describe what the last ten days have been for me. The energy and expertise you put into every aspect of the trip allowed me to let go and just be. The camaraderie of the women, the chance NOT to be in charge while at the same time completely trusting the hands of whom I write, all while laughing till my sides burst – well my soul is FULL!
I went on this journey to discover the beauty of the Rockies, only to discover something greater … the beauty, strength and courage of women supporting women! What a great service we do for ourselves when we shed our armor of everyday life to pursue adventure and self-growth. It was a thrill to be reminded here in the Rockies, that confidence plus goofy fun is the BEST medicine in life.
Please accept my thanks, gratitude and enthusiastic recommendation for the Utah trip. I couldn’t have done it without you! The five National Parks were jaw-droppingly beautiful, each in its own way, and the drive through Grand Staircase Escalante was amazing. Our small group of mighty women made for excellent company. The accommodations and dining choices were terrific. Our driver was safe and tireless, narrating the sites and sharing knowledge of the area. Each guest was made to feel welcome and important. I look forward to joining you on another tour soon, and I hope to bring my sisters along.
My spirit expands every year that I travel with you. You work tremendously hard to make these trips possible. Not many people can say they have found, and are good at, their life’s calling.
I treasure my Canyon Calling experiences. You have taken me awesome places. Your endless efforts to put together fun activities that teach me something about myself while I enjoy the challenge of the moment, make you special and your trips a joy.

The 10 Best Solo Female Travel Groups and Tours

07/05/2023 by Kristin Addis 3 Comments

Setting out alone to travel the world as a woman can be daunting. Whether it’s choosing a destination fit for first-timers or planning diligently around your safety concerns , there is plenty to consider before you make the leap to solo travel.

But what if there was an easier way to dip your toes into making your wanderlust dreams come true? Or what if there was a way to make solo travel less…solo?

Enter travel groups and tours. Now that solo female travel has become more popular than ever, new companies are emerging each year to offer women an alternative: traveling in a group. Group trips and tours vary widely, but a common thread is that they offer women the opportunity to meet other travelers and explore the world together without the added pressure of planning.

These are my top picks:

Table of Contents

1. BMTM Adventures

namibia road trip spitzkoppe

My own BMTM Adventures obviously makes the list! So far, we’ve taken over a hundred women on trips all around the world, from swimming with whales in French Polynesia to backpacking across glacial landscapes in Alaska and Patagonia. Focusing on unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations, this is the ideal choice for travelers who aren’t afraid to venture outside their comfort zone. I put my heart and soul into planning each and every trip.

This year’s destinations are Namibia & Botswana and French Polynesia . The Africa tour has an astrophotography and wildlife focus, and the other is all about whale watching and diving into Polynesian culture. (Past participants have been blown away by how up close and personal they can get with the animals without disturbing them.) Since I hand-pick each lodge, activity, and local guide on every trip, you can expect warm hospitality and a truly immersive experience, regardless of which adventure you choose.

2. Wander Women Retreats

best solo female travel groups and tours

Wander Women Retreats, founded by Alex in Wanderland , offers empowering experiences for solo female travelers. Its retreats combine wellness, adventure, and cultural exploration, providing a holistic approach to travel. Whether it’s practicing yoga on the serene beaches of Bali or diving in the deep seas of the Maldives , Wander Women Retreats create an environment in which personal growth and meaningful connections thrive.

This year, Wander Women Retreats will head to Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and also offer two unique trips to Egypt! You can also book a virtual retreat if you want a taste of Wander Women before hopping on an in-person tour.

3. TBA Escapes

best solo female travel groups and tours

TBA Escapes specializes in boutique and luxury experiences designed for adventurous solo female travelers . Its itineraries span unique destinations worldwide, allowing participants to embark on thrilling activities, such as sandboarding in Morocco or hiking Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa .

I love that TBA Escapes includes a whole page dedicated to testimonials from past participants . These excited me about the trip offerings, because the reviews are absolutely glowing! TBA Escapes is currently accepting reservations for its 2024 offerings to the Galápagos Islands, Egypt, Jordan, South Africa, and Morocco. How can a girl choose?!

4. Girls That Scuba

best solo female travel groups and tours

Girls That Scuba is a vibrant community and travel resource for women scuba divers. Alongside its informative articles and resources, it organizes dive trips catered specifically to solo female travelers. These trips provide the opportunity to explore breathtaking dive sites while connecting with fellow female divers who share the same passion for the underwater world.

The beauty of Girls That Scuba is its wide range of offerings for every skill level. You can join a freediving training retreat in Mexico , or dive head first (pun intended) into the Red Sea in Jordan for a fully immersive experience. So immerse yourself in the beauty of the ocean and form lifelong friendships on a Girls That Scuba trip.

5. Trafalgar

woman travel tours

First Name:

Trafalgar’s women’s travel division specializes in curating enriching group experiences for solo female travelers and tend to cater to a boomer crowd. Its itineraries focus on cultural immersion, encounters with residents, and unique insights into each destination. From exploring the ancient ruins of Greece to discovering the vibrant markets of Morocco, Trafalgar offers a supportive and inclusive environment for female travelers seeking more comforts on their trips.

The history and culture enthusiast in me craves being fully immersed in a culture the way Trafalgar promises. Some of my favorite travel experiences include hands-on experiences like this, so I recommend Trafalgar to anyone most excited about the opportunity to be surrounded by new sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and more!

Upcoming trips include Ireland, France, Egypt, Jordan, and Scandinavia, and the website makes it super easy to choose one, because you can see recent reviews and a full itinerary for each trip before you book.

6. REI Adventures – Women’s Trips

best solo female travel groups and tours

REI Adventures has a range of outdoorsy trips designed specifically for women. They’re all about hands-on activities and active exploration, and the itineraries are tailored to empower women through physical challenges. Try backpacking for the first time , or a kayaking adventure with REI Adventures, and join a group of like-minded women ready to conquer new horizons.

Since trekking alone can be anxiety-inducing for many women, REI Adventures is an opportunity to connect with the outdoors without worrying about safety. My women love hiking but often get spooked when out on a trail by themselves, which keeps many from doing longer backpacking trips . That’s why REI Adventures makes my list of the best solo female travel groups and tours. Upcoming trips include hiking in Bryce Canyon , backpacking along the Pacific Crest Trail, and kayaking in the San Juan Islands.

7. AdventureWomen

best solo female travel groups and tours

AdventureWomen is a pioneer in women-only adventure travel (as the name implies), offering a wide range of active and immersive tours for solo female travelers. From hiking the iconic Inca Trail to cultural explorations in Iceland , AdventureWomen provides opportunities for women of all ages to discover the world while building lifelong friendships. Embrace your adventurous spirit with AdventureWomen, and join hundreds of other women in making their travel dreams come true.

Adventure Women has the widest range of offerings I’ve seen anywhere else. You can choose from trips on nearly every continent. Some of the upcoming trips, like this cruise in Croatia , are more laid-back. Then there are more intense adventures, like this trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro .

8. Intrepid Travel’s Women’s Expeditions

best solo female travel groups and tours

Intrepid Travel’s Women’s Expeditions focuses on empowering women while providing unique cultural experiences and opportunities for personal growth. Whether you’re exploring the ancient ruins of Jordan or discovering the vibrant cities of India, these expeditions offer a supportive and educational environment for female travelers. Intrepid offers the chance to join a diverse group of women from around the world and embark on a life-changing adventure.

Intrepid has a great reputation for organizing meaningful trips that inspire connection, which is why its expeditions excite me so much! There’s even a 12-day trip to Iran , which is the most unusual offering I’ve seen so far.

9. Wild Women Expeditions

best solo female travel groups and tours

Feeling a little…wild? Wild Women Expeditions specializes in immersive adventure travel experiences, such as kayaking in the Canadian wilderness or hiking in the Himalayas . These expeditions allow solo female travelers to challenge themselves in awe-inspiring natural environments. Discover your inner wild woman and join a community of adventurous souls on a journey that will leave you feeling empowered and inspired.

Like me, you might feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of trips available through Wild Women Expeditions. On the destinations page , you’ll see options all over the globe, so choosing just one might be tricky. There’s even a trip to Antarctica , which is a rare find!

10. Purposeful Nomad

This one is for you if you’re keen on diving deep into a new culture. Purposeful Nomad offers immersive travel experiences that combine adventure, culture, and social impact. You can explore vibrant markets in India, participate in community-based projects in Peru, and so much more. Purposeful Nomad also provides opportunities to volunteer during your trip, adding an extra layer of intention and meaning. You’ll get to connect with a community of like-minded women seeking meaningful travel experiences, too.

I love the unique social impact model of Purposeful Nomad, and the upcoming trips look incredible. From the Ngorongoro Crater to the Galápagos Islands , there are plenty of options to choose from.

When it comes to finding the best solo female travel groups and tours, the world truly is your oyster. Traveling completely alone is an incredible experience, but sometimes a girl needs to be in community with others while on the road.

Each group or tour brings its unique flair, catering to different travel styles and preferences. Whether you’re looking for adrenaline-pumping adventures, cultural immersions, or personal growth, those listed here are designed to enhance your journey.

So, which one will you choose?

Atlas adventures!!

Mimi Leiper says

03/06/2024 at 6:02 pm

I wanted to let you know about my experience with Girls Guide to the World before you recommend them to anyone else. It has been a nightmare…

I signed up to go on what I thought would be the trip of a lifetime to sail in Thailand in April 2024. The trip was two 44 foot catamarans with a private chef, 8 women and two captains. Before I signed up for the trip I spoke with the owner at length and was assured that everything would be perfect. The trip would be very safe with the two boats and so many participants.

Only one other person signed up for the trip and because the owner of the company did not want to lose her deposit, she decided that there would be only 1 boat, two paying travelers and that she would go along with her cousin. I do not feel it is even safe to sail around in a small sailboat alone with just a few women. When I sent an email to her in January expressing my concerns she ignored it. Only when I informed her that I would not be paying the balance of my trip did she contact me. She has continued to refused to cancel the trip, refused to refund or transfer my $2600 deposit to another trip and then sent an email out offering a discount of $1400 for anyone else to take my place. That $1400 discount was actually part of my deposit.

The website clearly states that if In the highly unusual event that Girls’ Guide to the World has to reschedule or cancel a trip, we will offer you the option of a) Joining us on the rescheduled trip at a later date (we will make every effort to pick new dates that work for everyone), b) applying your payment(s) towards a different trip, or c) receiving a full refund. Based on the fact that this trip was not at all what was advertised I believe it should have been cancelled and I should have been given the opportunity to choose a, b or c. Instead they decided to keep my deposit and move forward with one paying traveler.

This company clearly cares only about the bottom line in my opinion. I would never recommend them ever to anyone! Buyer beware!

So sorry to hear about your negative experience! I’ve gone ahead and removed them as a recommended company on the post.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your search for ""

What is solo female travel?

The term solo female travel generally refers to traveling alone, on a self-guided itinerary. But traveling solo doesn’t have to mean traveling alone, or indeed, under your own steam. Choosing small group travel offers you plenty of time and space to do your own thing, as well as the opportunity to meet like-minded fellow travelers. Plus – the peace of mind knowing that everything is taken care of by destination experts.

How to find female solo travel partners?

Our small group Women-Only Tours are the perfect way to find like-minded solo travel partners. Choose from 11 enriching and inspiring itineraries, where the experiences, destinations, ‘Business Class style’ transport and hand-picked 4- and 5-star hotels are all included. Get to know your fellow female travelers over dinners at top-rated restaurants, and through Insightful Encounters and meaningful MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences. You can also join our Insight Vacations Facebook group and meet fellow female travelers there.

Where is the best place to travel solo female?

Where you choose to go really depends on what you want from your vacation. Do you want to try somewhere new, step out of your comfort zone or maybe rediscover a place you’ve been before in a whole new light? With our Women-Only tours, we offer a wide variety of options, including Europe, America, India and Morocco, so there's something for everyone.

What size are the groups on Women-Only tours?

All Women-Only tours are small groups. The maximum group size is 24 but the average group size is 20.

How can a senior woman travel alone?

The key is to do what feels comfortable. There are many options based on individual preferences. We’ve found that senior female travelers enjoy tours for the camaraderie and added sense of security, plus a premium level of hotel, dining and comfort, and our Women-Only Tours are curated with all this in mind.

What is the safest country for solo females?

Primarily, the countries that women feel most secure in tend to be the ones that they are most familiar with. North America and Europe are great starting points. Both destinations have mature tourism industries that provide plenty of support to visitors. For destinations less familiar or more adventurous (hiking Machu Picchu, for example), a tour can help women feel more secure and confident.

Which country is the safest for solo female travelers in Europe?

Europe encompasses many different countries with different experiences. Overall, as a collection of mostly wealthy Western democracies, crime is low and travelers can feel safe. Scotland and Ireland are especially warm and welcoming, as are Italy and Spain. It is always advisable to check government advisories for travel and to travel smart, wherever your destination.

Will there be an all-women on-the-road team?

Our Women-Only tours will always be led by a female Travel Director and Local Experts. Your driver will also be a woman, where possible.

How many single occupancy rooms are available?

Due to the small size of our Women-Only tour groups, there will be plenty of single-occupancy rooms available. The only exception is our Splendours of Egypt Women-Only tour, where cabins are limited on the Nile cruise.

10 Adventure Travel Groups for Women

Ranging from hardcore outdoor adventures to luxe glamping-style getaways, these trips have a no-guys-allowed policy.

Lila Harron Battis is a freelance writer and editor. She was previously a senior editor at Travel + Leisure .

Girls just want to have fun — in the wilderness, that is. That's the idea behind these travel groups for women and nonbinary adventurers. Whether you're a thrill seeker keen to kayak some rapids or a wellness enthusiast more interested in practicing your yoga poses in the serene outdoors, there's a female-focused trip or retreat for you.

With the guidance of these adventure tour operators, you can learn a new skill, conquer a physical challenge, explore new surroundings, and meet some amazing people along the way. So buckle your helmet for a days-long cycling trip or strap into your harness to take on a scenic climbing route with a supportive group.

Adventures in Good Company

This tour company specializes in small-group expeditions in more than 100 destinations on every continent except Antarctica. Adventures include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, camping on the Sea of Cortez, and kayaking in Greenland. Trips are categorized by activity level, on a scale of one to five, ranging from gentle activities for beginners to itineraries for the very fit. Adventures in Good Company welcomes all women — including trans women — and nonbinary people "who identify with the women’s community."

AdventureWomen

Operating since 1982, this trusted female-focused group leads hikes through the Himalayan Mountains, transports travelers to the Galápagos Islands by private yacht, and facilitates multisport adventures in the Canadian Rockies, among some 60 other options. You might opt to go alone and meet new friends or treat your mom to one of its mother-daughter trips . Tours range from moderate to active, high-energy, and challenging.

Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock hosts groups of women in Yosemite National Park. These trips lean less toward the adventurous and more toward the spiritual, "inspir[ing] healing and wellness through yoga, hiking, Ayurveda, creative expression, and community." The nonprofit runs a variety of programs throughout the year, including annual Women of Color retreats. Trips are for "any individual who self-identifies as trans, woman, nonbinary, intersex, two-spirit, and/or genderqueer."

Damesly trips — ranging from Cuba to Bhutan, Uzbekistan, the Grand Canyon, and beyond — cater to "creative and professional women" between 30 and 65, though any woman 21 or older can join. Offerings include high-energy adventures and self-discovery workshops alike. The groups are kept small (12 maximum), making for an intimate experience. And you can bet this women-owned business supports as many females as possible along the way.

Explorer Chick

Explorer Chick 's trips include hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, and sometimes even whiskey tours, glamping, or survival workshops. Destinations range from Uganda to Patagonia to Croatia, among many others. Women of all ages are welcome as long as they're physically capable of the itinerary. The only demographics this group discriminates against are "mean girls" and "Debbie Downers."

Fit & Fly

Instructor-led daily workouts anchor Fit & Fly retreats to sunshiny locales like Bali, Morocco, and Mexico City (also Iceland — not so sunshiny). Fitness opportunities might include a surf lesson, a glacier hike, or yoga in the desert. Accommodations are high-end and comfortable — ideal for post-workout recovery — and time outside of "class" often involves good food and spa treatments.

REI Women's Adventures

The outdoor retailer REI invites any traveler who identifies as a woman on adventures in U.S. national parks and beyond. Choose between backpacking in Joshua Tree, kayaking in the San Juan Islands, camping in Bryce Canyon, section hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, and more. You won't need a passport for any of them. Activity levels for said trips range from two ("easy active") to five ("strenuous"). One major selling point of an REI Women's Adventure ? Members get a discounted price.

WHOA Travel

The concept of WHOA is apparent in the name: "Women High On Adventure." These itineraries are for women who want to climb mountains. This is your chance to hike to great heights in Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand, to ice climb a volcano in Iceland, or to scale a trio of peaks in Ecuador. Tours are also offered in Patagonia, Antarctica, Peru, and more. Some trips, billed as WHOA Plus, are just for "curvy" or plus-sized women.

Wild Women Expeditions

This Canada-based tour operator welcomes wild women "of all ages, sexual orientations, and identities" on trips in every corner of the world. Adventures might include taking a dinghy to see Greenland's glaciers up close, horseback riding in Mongolia, or sailing the Nile River in Egypt. Wild Women Expeditions has hosted girls and women from eight to 86 in more than 30 countries and on every continent.

Intrepid Travel Women's Expeditions

Intrepid Travel is the biggest adventure travel company — and one of the most eco-conscious, earning the reputable B Corporation certification for its social and environmental efforts. It isn't totally women-focused, but it does host a number of women-only adventures to Jordan, Pakistan, India, Morocco, and beyond. These trips are specifically designed to create immersive, hands-on experiences such as traditional weaving in Morocco's Amejgag village and cooking with Tibetan refugees in Nepal. On these expeditions, visitors get the chance to support female employment opportunities and women-owned businesses.

Our bike trips are fully supported with two guides and a vehicle to serve you on the road, carry your luggage, provide your meals, show you the routes, and fit you to a bicycle if you need one. All you have to do is show up and ride!

Our bike trips are designed for women of all ages, abilities and interests. Some come with roommates while others come alone, but everyone goes home as friends. If you don't mind sharing a room, we'll match you with a roommate.

We all cycle at our own pace. If you wish to skip a few miles, we’ll pick you up in our van. If you'd like to ride an electric-assist e-bike, you can rent a bike from us  for your tour. We believe there's no better way to explore the world around us than on a bicycle.

Exploring Women Travel Groups: Pros and Cons

S ometimes you just want to go traveling, but you have no one to go with and you want to be in a group. This is where women or co-ed travel groups will be very useful because they can provide the group atmosphere even if you have no travel buddy of your own.

What is a travel group?

For relatively new travelers, this word might be a little confusing. However, a travel group is only referring to any organized multi-day trip where you meet other travelers who booked the same trip. More often than not these will be complete strangers, and the groups can range from a few people up to full coach buses, but you can always find smaller groups too.

Each group will have a trip leader or tour guide, and pre-planned activities, and most of your lodging and food costs are rolled into the price you pay to book the trip. These groups are designed so you do not have to do extensive planning in order to have fun travel, and enjoy the area you are traveling to.

The Pros and Cons:

Easy to plan, meet new people, tour guides, safety in numbers, more economical, no excessive research/planning ahead, less flexibility, getting along with travel mates, no hiding you’re a tourist, only see main attractions – no hidden gems, no privacy/alone time, pros of travel groups.

Since the trip is already laid out for you once you sign up, there is very little planning involved. The only thing you really need to plan is when you want to go on a trip and the locations you can choose from. Other than that, you might have to schedule flights or get your passport ready, but it is not like you have to schedule the whole trip from scratch.

This might be a great opportunity to meet people from all different walks of life or job professions. Sometimes this can be a breath of fresh air, as you can get several different opinions on a subject, or a new perspective on something you may not think is that spectacular. As an introverted person myself, this is a great chance to open up and see what happens.

Similar to the planning pro, you will never have to figure out where to go, unless you have free time to explore, because there will always be a tour guide. This means not getting lost on public transportation or the wilderness since your travel guide should have all the information needed to get you around the travel spot. They also have background knowledge about the places you are traveling to, and could be the perfect person to ask for fun facts about the region.

Check Out: What to Pack? A Complete Guide to the Right Clothes and Gear

This pro is huge for solo women who travel, because you will always have at least one other person with you at all times, so you can help each other if you get lost, or just have someone to talk to. It also is beneficial at nighttime when dangers increase for lone women walking on the streets.

A lot of travel sites or groups can get lower rates for certain attractions or travel costs, because there is a larger group of people booking the same tickets. Just like when you were in high school and took a field trip, these rates could help save some money that you wouldn’t have if traveling solo. This means you can do more with the money you have, and possibly see sights not available to you before.

Similar to being easy to plan, you will only have to book your spot and possibly figure out what documentation or flights you may need to get to the location. Everything else has been researched and plotted out in terms of the daily activities, hotels, and restaurants, so you will never have to worry about day-to-day events as much as when traveling solo.

Cons of Travel Groups

As always, there are some cons about traveling in a group and this might be the biggest one. Since everything is planned out, there is probably little time to fit in anything else or go exploring in whatever city you decide to visit. This may become annoying, especially if you like to meander around and see what you can find.

Even though you get to meet new people, they might not be the best travel buddies. Sometimes people can get on each other’s nerves being in close quarters for a longer stretch of time, so just be aware that having a group is nice, but it can become strained if there are people who do not mix well in the group. Sometimes travel groups try to avoid this by grouping together similar ages or occupations, but there is always the risk since you are with complete strangers.

There is a chance you may become quite tired by the end of the trip, as the travel guides will pack as much as they can in one day, so you can get the full experience of the city you are visiting. Though there are options that feature “slow-travel” where you have more free time, most travel groups want to make sure you get what you paid for. If you are not into constantly moving, maybe try one of the slower travel options, or find a trip that has more free time built in.

Also Read: 10 Solo Travel Tips to Get You Wandering

This one is kind-of funny, because no matter where you go out of the country you will be seen as a tourist. When I traveled to Oslo, most of the people spoke English along with Norwegian, but I still stuck out as “American” or “foreign” to them. But, if you use a travel group this feeling will be quite prevalent as you cannot escape the tourist persona. If this doesn’t bother you, then you should still have a good time, but if it does maybe think about a smaller travel group.

Since this is a pre-planned trip, a lot of groups tend to hit the “main” tourist spots and miss those hidden gems that make the city unique. But, some groups also tend to show the off-the-beaten-path spots that you never would have found by yourself. The best way to figure out what you will be seeing is to research the travel groups and itineraries, and then find the best trip that balances both.

Similar to getting along with your travel mates, you will also be with them all the time even at night as several book hotel rooms as doubles. This may not be too big of an issue, but if you are an introvert you can get socially burned out fast. There are some options though that can alleviate this problem. You can either request solo rooming if the option is available for a small extra cost, or try to talk to your roommate about implementing time in the room where you can decompress.

There are a bunch more pros and cons to joining a travel group, but you will not know if you like it or not without trying. Even if your are more of a solo female traveler, take the opportunity to try a travel group once. You might enjoy it enough to do it more often, and it is a great opportunity to meet new people in a new city.

Intrepid Launches Women-Led Tours In Saudi Arabia

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 4th, 2024 at 12:50 PM EDT

Intrepid’s new women-led tours in Saudi Arabia are about “focusing on the hosts, not just the travelers.”

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Intrepid Travel has announced a women’s-only tour in Saudi Arabia — led by women, for women.

The tour represents an effort to sidestep the luxury-focused travel industry in the country while giving travelers a more authentic experience and supporting the booming female labor force.

The launch follows several years of progress for Saudi women, who gained the right to drive in 2018 and to be tour guides in 2019. As the country seeks to become a leading travel destination, the percentage of women who make up the tourism workforce has skyrocketed to 45%.

“This shift had one positive effect, which is that it gave more rights to women,” said Zina Bencheikh, the managing director of EMEA for Intrepid Travel. “[This tour] effectively means that we can speak to women and we can meet women who own businesses, women guides, women who run restaurants.”

The 12-day adventure will bring travelers to female-owned establishments. “I think the beauty of traveling this way is to focus on the hosts, not just the travelers,” said Bencheikh.

Going Local, Not Luxury

The tour involves a family-owned citrus farm, rock formations, and giant tombs. Travelers will visit the holy site Medina, take a tour of Al-Balad in Jeddah with Saudi’s first female guide, and go on a cruise in the Red Sea.

Intrepid partnered with a local agent, Sara Omar, to design the trip. Omar has previously focused on planning trips for Saudi women to experience other parts of the world. Now, she’s helping Intrepid bring the world to Saudi women.

“A lot of people think Saudi women are unable to do anything, that we’re not educated, that we don’t work. Meeting the locals is the best way to understand what the lifestyle is really like,” Omar said, according to Intrepid’s press release.

The tour also taps into something that has been difficult for tour operators to breach in Saudi Arabia – local engagement. While the country has marketed themselves as a luxury destination, many travelers want a more authentic experience.

“I think the country has positioned their tourism in one part of the travel industry, which is that kind of more mainstream luxurious experience,” said Bencheikh. “But in my opinion, they are kind of missing the point. In all the reports we see that what people want is interaction with the local people.”

The Saudi tour is the latest in a series of women-led tours. Others include tours to India, Nepal, Morocco, Jordan and Pakistan, all of which have grown in popularity since their inception.

These tours align with the travel experiences trends Intrepid is seeing, which show that female travelers above 50 are increasingly looking for solo meaningful experiences in lesser visited countries.

Intrepid’s women-led trekking tour in Morocco launched in 2018 and now has 20 departures per year. “If you think about the economic impact for those women,” said Bencheikh. “Some of them never worked before and now they have a job that is paid for by doing something they enjoy.”

Bencheikh said that Intrepid is scoping for locations for new tours, and may have its eyes on Asia next.

Grief Is for People by Sloane Crosley

Grief is not prescriptive. If there’s one thing you can take away from Grief Is for People , let it be that. Sloane Crosley’s new memoir is a deeply incisive and moving account of working through cumulative grief or grief overload—the kind associated with multiple losses in quick succession. Faced with a home break-in (during which she loses her family jewelry) and subsequently, the death of her friend and mentor by suicide, Crosley finds herself on a continuum of grief, during which this sequence of events that have nothing to do with each other mutate into a single event of profound stress. In fact, the title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to exactly that—the writer’s tendency to conflate her grief over her friend with the loss of her jewelry, an attempt at anthropomorphizing objects, if you will. Even in this morass of sadness and confusion, Crosley’s trademark wit, seen previously in her humorous essays, is on display—this book is both very poignant and darkly funny. And it smashes through any facile frameworks we have available for mourning. — Arati Menon , global digital director

Worry by Alexandra Tanner

The back cover of Alexandra Tanner’s Worry likens it to both Greta Gerwig’s “Frances Ha” and Seinfeld—a compelling start for a debut novel from the Brooklyn-based writer. Over a quick-reading 291 pages, the daily thoughts, anxieties, and indulgences of two sisters who are living together in New York City unfold through witty dialogue loaded with familiar pop culture references. Reading this feels a lot like hanging out with a sister, something I reflected on while carrying it to Mexico City for my little sister’s wedding. We’re hardly the same as Poppy and Jules, the two main characters, but I understand the dynamics at play here—it’s a bit like looking in a fun house mirror at times, sometimes to my horror, but always to my entertainment. — Megan Spurrell , senior editor

Funny Story by Emily Henry

If you're even slightly into romance novels, you're probably familiar with Emily Henry, a New York Times best-selling author (and Women Who Travel Power Listee ) known for her popular books like People We Meet on Vacation and Beach Read . Anticipating all the same feel-good magic in whatever Henry writes next, I couldn't wait to devour her latest novel, Funny Story . It follows a young woman named Daphne whose fiancé realizes he's in love with someone else—his childhood best friend, Petra. Daphne, now heartbroken and strapped for money, moves in with none other than Petra's ex-boyfriend, Miles. The unlikely pair of roommates, both grieving their own relationships, develop somewhat of an interesting friendship. It's humorous, playful, and has all the right ingredients for a good ole' love story. — Meaghan Kenny , associate commerce editor

Good Material by Dolly Alderton

I recently sped through Good Material , Dolly Alderton ’s second novel and fourth book, while on a trip to Mexico City . As with her previous work, the book explores themes of love, friendship, and the role of technology in our lives and relationships with a searing specificity. This story, told from the perspective of a flailing standup comedian who’s stuck in the proverbial restaurant of his former relationship, gets into the agonizing days and months following a breakup, and surfaces every embarrassing emotion that comes with it. At times, I wanted to shake the narrator silly, but I appreciated the fact that Alderton didn’t try and make him overly likable. The tone is warm, funny, and all too relatable. — Madison Flager , senior commerce editor

I’lll Just Be Five More Minutes: And Other Tales from My ADHD Brain by Emily Farris

I've been reading I'll Just Be Five More Minutes: And Other Tales from My ADHD Brain by Emily Farris , a senior commerce editor at Epicurious . I'm a longtime fan of Farris—her irreverent humor, her amazing sense of colorful design, and how she writes from the heart. She takes us on a journey through her life as experienced by someone with ADHD , and while I don't have ADHD, there are plenty of relatable tidbits (like the one about wanting to mail out those holiday cards a year late? Been there!) that make you laugh, cry, and cringe. It's not a topic talked about often and I appreciate Farris for putting it all out there. — Lia Picard , contributor

How to Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly from the Accidental Icon by Lyn Slater

I am currently devouring Lyn Slater’s debut book, How To Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly from the Accidental Icon, which details the decade of her 60s, how she became famous, and what spurred the reinvention taking place in her 70s. I myself have just entered into a new decade, and am about to become a mom. When I spoke to her recently about the book , I told her how much the material resonated with me. She told me that she actually wrote this book for people like me, in the midst of transition. “My message is that, instead of being fearful about being older, it's an opportunity to really take that dream that you might have put aside because of life, and making a living, and children, and really getting to a time of life where you can have that dream, if you want it.” — Mercedes Bleth , global associate director, social media

The Stone Home by Crystal Hana Kim

I’ve been reading a lot of fiction lately that deals with less widely-known parts of Asian history. Among the best of them is Kim’s riveting sophomore novel, which begins in 2011. The story opens with Eunju Oh in her Daegu, South Korea apartment, getting an unexpected visit from Narae, a woman who was raised by her childhood nemesis Sangchul Kim. Sangchul has recently died and directed Narae to Eunju to learn the truth about her origins. What follows is an account from both teenaged Eunju and Sangchul’s perspectives of their year in the Stone Home, purportedly a government-run reformatory for wayward citizens that was actually a camp where innocent civilians were kidnapped and forced to labor under grueling conditions, their wares sold abroad.

The book is tightly written and moves at a thrilling pace. You really feel for the characters and understand their motivations. Kim chronicles Eunju’s time in the camp’s kitchen with her mother, whom she calls Umma, and a disparate group of women who come to care for one another. While men usually toil in the workshops, Eunju and her friend Mina are chosen to work threading fish hooks with a group of boys that include Sangchul and his older brother, Youngchul. The main plot begins after Youngchul meets with tragedy, and Sangchul betrays his friends by becoming a brutal Keeper, a peer enforcer for the camp’s sadistic leaders. Kim’s writing is thoroughly engaging while also managing to educate readers regarding a brutal atrocity in Korea’s timeline. — Alexandra Sanidad , research director

Friends in Napa by Sheila Yasmin Marikar

I loved Sheila Marikar's debut novel Goddess Effect so much that I raved about it in last year's spring book club . So when I heard she had a juicy follow up, Friends in Napa , in the works, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. If you love tales of insufferable wealthy people in beautiful environs, a la Succession and The White Lotus (and who doesn't), this is the perfect premise: A group of college friends-turned-frenemies reunites in a scenic California wine country estate, where drama—and murder—ensues. After getting immediately hooked on the riveting opening scene that takes you inside the mind of a murderer, I'm now racing through the chapters brimming with grudges and grapes to figure out whodunnit. — Sarah Khan , contributor

No Judgment: On Being Critical Lauren Oyler

Fans of Lauren Oyler likely became so, as I did, because of her criticism, which is rather mean (never undeservedly!) and as a result, very funny. A follow-up to a debut novel that was received with a poetic panning of its own ( Fake Accounts, not as bad as you’ve heard), No Judgement is a collection of six essays musing largely on criticism’s very existence—how it is generally good for the culture, how apps like Goodreads in turn make it bad for the culture, and most of all criticism’s inevitability in every sphere of human behavior. The collection’s introduction opens with a modicum of truth: That when somebody tells you, “No judgement,” as a way to encourage honesty or reward it, that somebody is lying. They are not not judging you, but rather keeping said judgement to themselves. Quite simply, judgement is as human as it is involuntary. There’s also a good essay about living in Berlin that everybody should read, if nothing else. That’s the beauty of a book of essays. — Charlie Hobbs , associate editor

Headshot by Rita Bullwinkle

If you've been following Caitlin Clark's historic college basketball career at the University of Iowa, then you know women's sports are really, truly, finally having a moment. But what motivates girls to compete? That’s a central question in Rita Bullwinkle’s debut novel Headshot , which follows eight teenagers as they face off in a single-elimination boxing tournament. Each chapter is a bout between two young women, with an emphasis on what’s going on inside their heads as they fight. I’m only a few chapters in, but already this book is about so much more than athletics—it’s an exploration of girlhood, insecurity, and grit that, even if you didn’t grow up playing sports, you’ll find relatable and compelling. — Sarah Kuta , contributor

Fruit of the Dead by Rachel Lyon

Every now and then, a book description with some of my most niche interests and lived experiences make me really excited to crack it open: This one got me with camp counselorhood, a visit to a billionaire's remote private island , and an allegory for the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter. (The goddess duo, legend has it, went toe to toe with Hades in a parable about the depth of mother-daughter connection.) It doesn't spoil any plot to say that author Rachel Lyon's modern Persephone is children’s sleep-away camp employee Cory, who soon introduces us to our Hades (the predatory father of a camper) and our Demeter (mother Emer), whose adjacent perspective of the plot is jumped to in nearly every other chapter for a she-said/she-said format.

The result makes for a page-turning, sometimes deus-ex-machina story; one that interweaves teenage naivety, motherly intuition, and male privilege for a fast-moving tale that might call into question your own hard lines on topics like addiction, consent, and exploitation. (Readers should know there's a trigger warning for sexual violence, although the topic is explored thoughtfully, and through the eyes of both jaded single mother and young, lost daughter.) The joining force between the two points of view is the villain, whose descriptions and character development are Cat Person -level from the beginning. My only wish is that mother Emer's character was more fully brought into sharper focus by the end of the book—but with so much going on between the perspective-jumping chapters and a climactic ending, you'll find yourself gobbling up the pages. — Shannon McMahon , destinations editor

Piglet by Lottie Hazell

Food isn’t an afterthought in this scrumptious novel, it’s one of (if not the ) main characters. Fittingly, I devoured it in a single sitting. Author Lottie Hazell has a creative writing PhD—her research considers food writing in twenty-first century fiction—and her expertise on the matter is immediately clear in the razor-sharp prose, spot-on character development, and propulsive plot. From the very first chapter, you know Piglet’s fiancé Kit has betrayed her somehow, but it’s not clear exactly what he did. Not knowing somehow makes it even more salacious; the tension becomes not the secret itself, but how it is so closely kept from everyone in the book—including the reader. (I won’t give away when/if you do eventually find out what happened.) As the plot thickens, you feel the weight of Kit’s unknown deed build up in your chest, screaming to be released, but wondering alongside Piglet if that would really make you feel any better. The result is a suspenseful, binge-worthy read that dives deep into womens’ appetites, in all its many forms. — Hannah Towey , associate editor, transportation and travel news

The Limits by Nell Freudenberger

I read this on a trip to Cusco, Peru —so, lightyears away from Tahiti and New York , the two settings for this beautiful book (also, thankfully, years later than the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic in which it takes place). Following the lives of a coral researcher in French Polynesia , her ex-husband who is a doctor in New York City, and their daughter who moves between the two of them with all of her teenage dramas, this story meditates on love, family, identity, and complex dynamics of class and colonization in both destinations. It inspired me to learn more about Tahitian culture (and convinced me I need to visit ASAP), and kept me riveted from start to finish. —M.S.

Death Valley by Melissa Broder

At first glance, I had my apprehensions about beginning Melissa Broder’s Death Valley —as it is both fiction, and touches upon grief (I sway more towards non-fiction, and away from, well, grief). Immediately, though, Broder proves quirky and captivating—permitting us to accompany a woman’s solo expedition to California on a quest to reprieve the weight of loss of both her husband and father. Despite the Valley’s Best Western, though, the tale is opposite from bleak. Together, we head into a nearby desert trail and begin this existential, erotic, and treacherously real journey of self-discovery and resilience in the wake of “pending” grief. Whether conversing with unassuming cacti or vividly stark memories of her loved ones, Broder paints this hilarious fever dream, while still conveying a stark, tangible sense of what it means to be alive. All that to say, it’s still a great beach read. —J.C.

Eclipse expected to cause travel chaos; here’s how to navigate the roads and skies

(CNN) - Millions of Americans are expected to travel to see the total solar eclipse on April 8. Cities and towns along the route of totality are expecting big crowds.

While the boost in visitors is good for local economies, the extra people are expected to cause chaos on the roads and in the skies.

“You really need to plan ahead to be safe,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations for AAA Western and Central New York.

Communities from Mexico to Canada are in the path of totality, meaning the moon will completely cover the sun, creating total darkness during daylight. Some areas like western New York are expecting a million visitors.

AAA has several tips for drivers like navigating the old-fashioned way with a map, especially if you’re traveling in less populated areas.

“In a very rural area, you’re talking about wilderness with no cell service,” Carey said.

AAA also recommends drivers not try and watch the eclipse while driving, have their headlights on, don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving, and watch out for animals.

“It could trigger wildlife to be out and about,” said Carey.

If you’re flying, the Federal Aviation Administration is warning travelers to expect long lines and possible delays at airports. Monday’s eclipse falls during the busy spring break travel season.

The FAA says they’re expecting more than 46,000 flights the day after the eclipse.
