That's why many visitors start their trip off with a bus tour to see iconic sights and neighborhoods and get the lay of the land. To help you find the tour that's best for you, U.S. News reviewed traveler sentiment and expert input to determine the top New York bus tours. You can also book a Discover Ticket, which explores famous landmarks downtown, or an Explore Ticket, which is a two-day hop-on, hop-off bus tour experience. Big Bus Tours also operates a seasonal night tour.

One Day in NYC Itinerary

1 day bus trips to new york city

If you are visiting NYC for the first time or are still a relative newbie and you are short on time, then you've come to the right place.

This one-day itinerary takes you to many of the sites, historic landmarks, and attractions that make the Big Apple the exciting place that it is.

You will see historic buildings and beautiful parks all while getting amazing views of the New York skyline from different vantage points.

We've included time for lunch, a snack, and dinner.

There is a section for night activities if you have enough energy to keep going!

A big bonus: This itinerary is practically free. You only need to spend about $10 for transportation and the cost of food.

In the video below, Katie, a tour guide with us, Free Tours by Foot - NYC , runs through this itinerary for you, but we've added more details in the content below.

As local tour guides, we compiled this list based on our own experiences, but also answering your questions.

We lead thousands of people each month through the streets of NYC and we know a thing or two about crafting an itinerary.

We also grabbed ideas from the roughly 200k members of our popular NYC Travel Tips Facebook group.

Central Park

Enter at 59th Street and Central Park South

You've seen it in movies and pictures and now you can see for yourself that it is every bit as lovely as you expected.

Make your way to the Pond and Gapstow Bridge for a great photo op. Wander a bit around the southwest area.

If you are big on photography, head north for Bethesda Terrace and The Mall, both iconic locales in the park.

If you want to explore more of the park, it's best to have a map with you as it is quite large.

Use our self-guided tour  and or our  GPS-enabled audio tour to find your way around.

We also offer pay-what-you-wish guided  Central Park tours .

  • Rockefeller Center

As you walk down 5th Avenue 51st Street, look out for famous shops, like Tiffany's and Saks Fifth Avenue.

You'll pass by Trump Tower  on your way to Rockefeller Center. Explore this complex of 1920s buildings using our self-guided tour .

The Main Concourse is dazzling, from the celestial ceiling to the chandeliers and the tiled archways and regal staircases, Grand Central is a beauty.

If you’d like to learn more about Grand Central’s history and its secrets, check out our self-guided tour or our GPS-enabled audio tour .

Be sure to visit the Whispering Gallery on the lower level just outside of the Oyster Bar.

Click here for a  very short video demonstration of how to enjoy the Whispering Gallery .

After visiting the Whispering Gallery, grab lunch from over 35 food stalls.

There is something for everyone, from pizza, burgers, sushi, sandwiches, soups, and two classic New York desserts:

  • Junior's Cheesecake , the best cheesecake in NYC
  • Magnolia Bakery, where you can get the famous cupcakes from  Sex and the City.  (Find out about where the original Magnolia is from our post about SATC sites in NYC .)

When you are ready to move on to the next activity, it's time to take the subway.

Read below for all the information you need on how to use the subway.

You will be taking the DOWNTOWN 4/5/6 subway line. The line is represented by green circles.

There are a few different ways from inside Grand Central to get to the subway platform. They all involve going down one level via stairs or escalators.

Your destination is the Brooklyn Bridge- City Hall station . You can take either the 4, 5, or 6 trains as long as they say DOWNTOWN.

At the Brooklyn Bridge City Hall Station, there will be several different exits. No matter which exit you use, you will be able to see the pedestrian entrance to the bridge.

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge and visit DUMBO

Taking a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge is an absolute must-do on a trip to New York City.

For a more in-depth experience, be sure to download our GPS-enabled audio tour .

This is an unforgettable walk with sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the harbor.

You can use our visitor's guide to walking the Brooklyn Bridge  to help find the entrance to the walkway as well as how to find your way to DUMBO (District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), an artsy, waterfront neighborhood with traces of the American Revolution.

There is also incredible ice cream at the Ample Hills Creamery. You can find out where with our post on  things to do in DUMBO .

After spending some time in DUMBO, it's time to head back to Manhattan.

Walk to the East River Ferry landing at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park ( Stop 17 on this map ) to take the ferry to Wall Street.

Take the East River Ferry back to Manhattan

Buy your ticket from DUMBO to Wall Street and have your camera ready to go to get fantastic, unobstructed photos of the Manhattan skyline and the harbor.

For information read our post about the  East River Ferry .

The ride costs $4 but the view is priceless. The ride is approximately 4 minutes. Be sure to check the schedule to plan your afternoon.

Disembark from the ferry and leave the dock. You will be at the intersection of Gouverneur Lane and South Street.

Cross South Street and turn right and walk one block up South Street until you come to Wall Street. Make a left and begin walking along Wall Street.

At this point, you can take a look at our self-guided tour map .

Wall Street

Our self-guided tour of Wall Street  will take you to 13 of the most important sites along Wall Street with background information on each locale.

1 day bus trips to new york city

These are three buildings not to be missed:

  • New York Stock Exchange
  • Federal Hall National Memorial
  • Trinity Church

Walk south on Broadway for approximately 5 minutes.

The Charging Bull

This 7,000-pound bronze sculpture is one of the most photographed sculptures in New York City.

It was created by the Italian sculptor Arturo Di Modica in 1989, who gifted it to New York City as a symbol of encouragement for a strong stock market year, known as a "Bull Market".

Charging Bull Broadway Wall Street

Click here to read the fascinating history of the Charging Bull.

Keep walking south on Broadway and ahead of you, you will see a huge and beautiful white ornate   building.

National Museum of the American Indian

This stunning Beaux-Arts building next to Battery Park was built in 1907 as the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. (Photo 2 below)

It is now home to the National Museum of the American Indian Museum. It's one of NYC's free museums , so pop in and have a look.

The four monumental sculptures on the building's front side symbolize international commerce with each of the four female figures representing a continent: Asia, America, Europe, and Africa.

Read more about the Museum of the American Indian .

Continue south on Whitehall Street until you reach the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Staten Island Ferry

During the boat ride, you get a good view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and stunning views of the Lower Manhattan skyline.

The ride there and back is about 50 minutes and doesn’t require a ticket and it's free. The ferry runs frequently during the week and slightly less often on weekends.

Read our post on how to take the ferry .  (Photo 4 below)

From the ferry terminal, walk back up Whitehall St. until you reach Broadway (back by the Charging Bull).

Walk north on Broadway against the traffic. At Rector St. (about 2 long blocks past the Charging Bull) turn left.

Walk on Rector St. two blocks to Greenwich St. and make a right turn.

You will be walking north, against the traffic. Continue on Greenwich St. for about 4 minutes and you will arrive at the massive 9/11 Memorial Plaza.

National September 11th Memorial and Museum

Plan your visit to the Memorial with our detailed guide, Visiting the 911 Memorial and Museum .

The centerpiece of the memorial is the Reflecting Pools , two massive cascading fountains set in the exact location where the Twin Towers stood.

911-Memorial

Inscribed around the bronze edges of the pools are the names of those who died on 9/11.

For details on the other sites within the Memorial, we have a short, self-guided tour  and a  GPS audio tour .

Oculus

Dinner Downtown

Since you will be downtown already, check out the Food Hall at The Oculus next to the World Trade Center.

Not only are there plenty of food options like Eataly, Shakeshack, and Wasabi Sushi, but there are also fast food options and upscale restaurants.

The space-age-looking Oculus is a shopping center, transportation, and also an incredible example of architecture that honors the victims of 9/11.

Even if you plan to dine somewhere else, check out The Oculus -- and have your camera ready!

The Oculus is open Monday - Friday 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm.

If your night ends here, you can hop on one of the many subway lines you can enter from The Oculus including the 2/3/4/5/A/C/J/Z.

See a Broadway Show

No reason you can't fit a Broadway show into a whirlwind one-day itinerary.

If your budget allows, you can buy tickets in advance and head straight to your show.

Click here to see what's playing on StubHub when you are in town.

Staten Island Ferry Ride

Instead of taking this amazing free ride during the day, you can have a fabulous experience at night as well, and you won't feel so rushed trying to squeeze in everything before sunset.

See above for a description of the ferry.

Brooklyn-Bridge-at-night

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge at night

Though it's included in the daytime activities above, a nighttime stroll is also a great way to enjoy the bridge.

If you walk the bridge at night, your daytime pace will be slowed down and you have more time to explore a bit more on your own.

We offer a  night tour of the Brooklyn Bridge and 9/11 Memorial several evenings each week as well as a GPS-enabled audio tour of the bridge .

You could also  walk the bridge yourself . Either way, it's a lovely evening activity.

Take a  pay-what-you-like  night tour

We offer a Midtown Manhattan Night Tour , a  Dark Side of the High Line  tour, and several ghost tours , and in December for the holidays, we offer festive tours such as the New York Holiday Lights Tour .

For more ideas about how to spend your night after your one-day itinerary, see our post,  Top 10 Things to Do in New York City at Night .

Traveling with kids? No problem!

This one-day itinerary is appropriate for kids and we think they will get quite a lot out of the day.

If you would like to check out some alternatives, we have an itinerary specifically for families .

SEE NEW YORK BY NEIGHBORHOOD

New York is known for its diverse neighborhoods. Just wandering around one or two neighborhoods could easily fill up one day.

Use our self-guided tours and GPS-enabled audio tours that include maps, suggestions for things to do, itineraries, where to eat, and how to have fun just like the locals do.

1 Day in NYC: Must-do’s for First-timers + Interactive Map

' src=

Only have one day in New York ? Maximize your visit with my itinerary created especially for NYC first-time visitors . I have visited New York City several times. During my last two trips, I was accompanied by people visiting for the first time.

I recommend spending at least four days in NYC . However, even one day can give you a taste of this top travel destination.

Key Things to Know: Top things to do in NYC for a day

  • Essential Stops: Don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, or Central Park for a mix of history and iconic landmarks.
  • Transportation Tip: Maximize your time by using the subway for faster travel between Manhattan’s attractions.
  • Customization: This itinerary is completely customizable to your particular interests and the exact amount of time you have in New York City.

One day in New York itinerary

9/11 memorial (and museum).

9/11 Memorial | Closest subway stops: WTC–Cortland St (1) and Cortland Street (R, W)

Start your day by spending your morning in Lower Manhattan.

In my opinion, your one-day in NYC itinerary should absolutely include the 9/11 Memorial. It’s one of my favorite free things to do in New York City .

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the Twin Towers, forever changed the city and the United States. In fact, it’s one of the most moving and beautiful memorials that I have ever had the privilege of seeing.

The 9/11 Memorial typically is open to the public all day every day.

Optional: The 9/11 Memorial Museum is at the same location. Though I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it, I’ve heard great things. There is a charge for admission to the museum.

9/11 Memorial pool in New York City showing names engraved in bronze with buildings and trees in the background.

Statue of Liberty

Ferry from Manhattan departs from Battery Park | Subway stops: South Ferry Station (1), Whitehall Street (R), Bowling Green (4, 5)

Your one-day New York City itinerary must include the Statue of Liberty, my absolute favorite place in the city

Buy your tickets ahead of time onlin e, especially if you want to climb up to the crown. When available, those tickets can sell out weeks or even months in advance.

Even if you don’t want to go up onto the pedestal or the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you can purchase a ticket to enjoy the cruise over to Liberty Island (with great views of both Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan). You can visit the new museum and walk around the monument’s exterior.

If you only have a day in New York I recommend skipping a visit to Ellis Island even though it’s included in your ticket.

More things to do on a day trip to New York City

  • Explore NYC with a sightseeing helicopter tour over Manhattan .
  • Pay a visit to the top of One World Observatory with this skip-the-line ticket .
  • If you’re staying the night in New York, consider this sunset cruise in New York Harbor.

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Lunch options: where to eat

By the time you finish your visit to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. The Crown Café offers a wide variety of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Their menu includes vegetarian options as well as several items that can be made gluten-free upon request.

Battery Park (where you’ll disembark from your cruise to Liberty Island) is a great picnic spot. You can grab a cheap lunch from a food truck or assemble a picnic from a nearby market.

If a restaurant is more what you’re looking for, wander into the Financial District where you’ll find a variety of popular eateries for all budgets.

Empire State Building

20 West 34 Street | Subway stop: 34 St–Herald Square (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W), 33 St (M)

Many believe that visiting the Empire State Building is a must on their trip to New York City.

I will admit right now that in all my NYC trips, I’ve only ever admired this iconic structure from the ground.  I do not like heights, nor do I generally pay money to stand atop them. But you who are not afraid of heights can go as high as the 102nd floor. The main observation deck is on the 86th floor.

Time-saving tip: Upgrade your Empire State Building ticket to get skip-the-line access.

As an alternative, save the Empire State Building for after dinner, or even enjoy dinner at the State Grill and Bar.

New York City skyline with the Empire State Building.

Times Square

Subway stop: Times Square–42 Street (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7)

You’ve seen it in movies and TV shows. Of all the places to visit in New York City, it’s hard to think of anything else that’s more New York than Times Square. Soak it in, take a few photos, and wander through so you can say you’ve been there (it’s great at night also). Maybe even buy a cheap souvenir T-shirt or stop in at M&M’s World.

Times Square is just a 15-minute walk from the Empire State Building.

tall building in New York City with a sculpture in front

Rockefeller Center

Between 49th and 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues | Subway stop: 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M), 49 Street (N, R, W)

A 10-minute walk from Times Square will take you to Rockefeller Center. It’s a New York City landmark that includes 30 Rockefeller Plaza (NBC Studios), Radio City Music Hall, and more.

In addition to some great shopping and dining, you can take a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, go to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck , skate at the Rink, and more.

If you’re feeling snackish, I recommend stopping at Magnolia Bakery for something yummy.

Grab your Top of the Rock ticket here.

Central Park

From North 110th Street to Central Park South (59th Street), and from Central Park West (8th Avenue) to 5th Ave | Subway stops: There are several subway stops around the perimeter of the park including 5th Ave/59 Street (N, R, W), 59 Street/Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), Central Park North (2, 3), and 6 stops on the west side of the park.

Central Park is so quintessentially New York that you absolutely need to make time in your itinerary to see it even if only spending one day in New York.

Now, keep in mind that this park is huge. I mean it. Central Park covers 1.3 square miles (840 acres) of Manhattan. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this place.

To start I’d suggest looking at a map of the park and choosing a few things there you want to see. This might be the Central Park Zoo, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Belvedere Castle, or the Conservatory Water (where you can rent a model boat to sail on the pond).

The southeast corner of Central Park is just a 15-minute walk from Rockefeller Center. If you want to walk all the way to the Conservatory Water and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, expect a walk of closer to 30 minutes.

Time-saving Tip: Instead of walking to Central Park from Rockefeller Center, jump in a NYC cab.

Ways to modify this itinerary

With only one day in NYC, there are an incredible number of ways you could spend your time. Here are a few ways you could modify this one-day itinerary to fit your particular interests. It’s important that you get to see the things you want.

  • Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying your view of the Manhattan skyline.
  • Enjoy a tour of either or both of two of the premier art museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art.
  • Explore Greenwich Village, Soho, and other iconic neighborhoods.
  • End your day with a Broadway show.

View of Washington Square arch from below.

Short half-day itinerary for NYC

Even if you don’t have a full day or 24 hours to spend in New York City, you can still see a few of the major highlights. Here are a few options:

  • Focus on one area such as Lower Manhattan, grabbing a view of Brooklyn Bridge, followed by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
  • Explore the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center, and then stroll up to Central Park for some more exploring.
  • Get the best of New York’s top art museums at The Met, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim.

New York 1-day tours

Want to see the best of New York in a day, but rather leave the planning to someone else? Leave the planning to an expert tour guide.

  • Pack the very best of NYC into one day with this highly rate expert guided tour . See New York’s major landmarks in only 6 hours.
  • Go beyond Manhattan’s major tourist sites with this tour of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem, and Coney Island .

Where to stay in New York City

If you’re thinking about spending more than a day in New York, you might be overwhelmed by the many hotel options.

Here are my recommendations for where to stay in New York City:

  • Hyatt Place Midtown South (52 West 36th Street): We loved staying at this hotel. It’s just two blocks from the Empire State Building and just around the corner from the 34th Street – Herald Square subway stop. Book Now
  • For a more boutique-style accommodation try Archer Hotel New York (45 West 38th Street). Book Now

How to get around New York City

I say this so often, but I will continue to say it over and over: use your feet and the subway.

I’m serious about the subway. You’ll get where you want to go cheaper than Uber or taxis and of course much faster than walking especially when traveling from one area of Manhattan to another.  You can find subway maps on the MTA website .

Taxis are a fine option for getting around New York City especially if you are in a time crunch or are going someplace that just doesn’t have an easy subway route or a nearby stop.

Final thoughts on one day in New York

There are so many amazing things to do in NYC in a day of course that you can’t possibly see as much as you would like, BUT you can see the best of the best if you have 24 hours in the Big Apple.

From historical monuments to stunning views from the best observatories in the world, you almost can’t go wrong with how you spend your day here.

What do you think everyone should put on their 1-day NYC itinerary?

Can’t wait great job

Great article, Darcy! You have prepared an amazing one-day itinerary for people vising NYC along with some great tips to commute within the city. Subways are indeed the best way to get around the whole city. However, if the time permits, why not go sailing as well? After seeing the city on foot all day, one can relax on a sailboat and enjoy the skyline. Several companies offer rental for 2-3 hours including sunset cruises overlooking Manhattan. Book beforehand to get the best deals.

1 day bus trips to new york city

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Taking a Bus Trip to New York City: Sights to See

New York City skyline view

The Big Apple is an exciting destination for friends, families, school groups, church members and business teams. The city boasts many famous landmarks, attractions, viewpoints and an intriguing mix of neighborhoods. While it’s impossible to explore all of them in a day — or a week — with proper planning, you can enjoy some of the most prominent attractions around the city during a one-day visit.

Before  chartering a reliable ride  that prioritizes your safety and comfort, create an itinerary of all the NYC places you’d like to see. With limited time on your hands, you’ve got to go in with a plan. Here are some must-see sites in New York to get the inspiration flowing.

1. Times Square

If you want to experience New York in its full glory, you must  take a walk in Times Square . The tourist hot spot gives you a feel of the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps. It’s among the world’s busiest pedestrian streets, lined with gigantic digital billboards, talented street performers, live music shows and a whole range of businesses.

If you walk through Times Square or people-watch from one of the many restaurants in the morning, keep an eye out for shows like Good Morning America and the Today Show. And don’t miss a chance to experience the historic  Hard Rock Cafe New York , the  Paramount Building  and the  M&M store . There’s also no better place to buy your New York City souvenirs than one of the many gift and specialty shops in Times Square. There’s the Disney Store, Yankees Clubhouse and countless other shops where you can pick up an “I Love NYC” T-shirt.

2. Central Park

Scenic view of Central Park

Central Park is among the oldest and most-visited urban public parks in the United States. The  park covers about 843 acres , or 1.3 square miles, of Manhattan and was established over 150 years ago to facilitate the recreational needs of the fast-growing city. Central Park provides New Yorkers and visitors  a place to escape  the busy and stressful city life.

The serene park is covered with green lawns, Instagrammable trees, broad lakes, winding streams, rolling slopes and stunning valleys. It’s also home to several animal species, including chipmunks, geese, ducks, squirrels and bunnies. When you only have a few hours to  explore Central Park , take your pick of attractions like the Conservatory Water, the Alice in Wonderland sculpture, the Central Park Zoo and the Belvedere Castle.

3. Rockefeller Center

An iconic symbol of midtown Manhattan, the  Rockefeller Center  is a complex of buildings and plazas that house television studios, theatres, corporate headquarters, shops and restaurants. Some of the most iconic attractions you can see include the 70-story skyscraper that houses NBC studios, hundreds of historic art pieces and the Associated Press Building.

You can catch 360-degree views of the city from the  Top of the Rock observation decks , explore and relax at the Channel Garden, and shop at the NBC store. Around the holidays, you can skate at The Rink at Rockefeller Center and check out the legendary Christmas tree. Another major attraction worth experiencing is the modern-style gardens on the seventh floor of Rockefeller Center. Looking to enjoy an elaborate dinner in New York? 4. 9/11 Memorial & Museum

Spend part of your day in New York exploring the  9/11 Memorial & Museum  to better understand the events that led up to the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001. The memorial is free and open to the public every day of the week, but you pay for admission to the museum.

The museum blends architecture, archaeology and history to tell the story of the attacks. You can explore artifacts, imagery and rotating displays that pay tribute to the people who were affected. The museum also hosts  events and programs  online and offline to deepen your understanding of the attack’s continued impact on the United States and the world. You can support the museum by purchasing books, keepsakes and apparel at the Museum store.

5. Broadway Shows

Your day trip to New York isn’t complete without catching a  live Broadway show . New York’s Theatre District is home to over 40 theatres, each with a minimum capacity of 500 seats. Bus trips to Broadway are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will bring you closer to your travel buddies in more ways than you can imagine.

Live Broadway shows are exhilarating because you get to indulge in the work of top-tier actors, orchestras and designers. You can enjoy elaborate performances in Broadway staples like “Wicked” or “Chicago,” catch a revival of a classic musical like “Sweeney Todd,” check out a newer option like “The Notebook” or “MJ” or opt for more family-friendly shows like “The Lion King.” It’s best to  buy your tickets  a few weeks, or even months, in advance. You can also often enjoy discounted rates for groups of more than 10 people.

6. Empire State Building

End your day trip by visiting the  Empire State Building . Take in all of New York’s breathtaking beauty from one of the enclosed observatory decks, either 86 floors (1,050 feet) or 102 floors (1,250 feet) above Manhattan streets. On bright days, you can  catch clear and stunning views  of up to six states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. In the evening, you can enjoy panoramic views of the neon-lit New York skyline.

While the Empire State Building has spacious and fully air-conditioned waiting areas, you should  book your tickets in advance  to avoid long queues and waiting times. You’ll also appreciate the opportunity to take and post photos from the world’s most photographed building.

Taking a Bus Trip to New York City: Sights to See

From Our Customers:

I want to extend my appreciation to Executive Coach and our driver for organizing a safe trip to the Women's March in DC this past Saturday. Our driver was courteous and respectful and obliged to our wishes to travel directly into DC for a drop off point after all the metro sites were full. Everyone on the bus loved his accommodating manner and felt safe riding with him. I appreciate the Executive Coach staff working tirelessly to make sure we had all the information available to us. I look forward to working with you all again!

On a recent trip to D.C. I was in need of a sudden change in carriers due to safety concerns and the crew at Executive Coach came through for me. They were able to provide service from D.C. to Chicago on a less than 24-hour notice. I will recommend Executive Coach anytime, anywhere! You have restored my faith in a corporate culture that takes responsibility, loves their work and goes the extra mile (literally!)

- Ed Hollinger Chiaravalle Montessori School

Executive Coach staff & drivers are timely, friendly, and professional. They took the stress and worry out of our transportation logistics

- Hope International

I would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation of your driver. He was our driver for the past days from Boston to New York. He was not just a professional driver, he cared for us, he was understanding, and most of all knew where and how to get everywhere.

- Garry & Carmen

We have worked closely with Executive Coach for years. They have always portrayed the utmost professionalism and courtesy to us as a customer. Their equipment is state of the art and very well maintained, and their drivers are concerned with the safety of their passengers and are very pleasant to our groups. Overall, the team at Executive Coach has been a wonderful partner with White Star Tours and we look forward to continuing our professional relationship for years to come.

- White Star Tours

Back from another wonderful day trip to Ocean City! The bus driver was pleasant, courteous, and a wonderful driver. We were picked up on time, the bus was clean and comfortable, and we were back a few minutes early despite some traffic delays. Can't wait to go again in August!

- Connie from Paradise, PA

I just finished a tour from Washington to Boston with one of your drivers. It was the best driver and person I worked with in my last 15 years. The group and I appreciated his presence and safety during this tour.

- Normand Misa Tours

Clean coaches, professional drivers, excellent safety record, overall pleasant experience.

Not only were they reasonably priced, the assigned bus was clean and on time for all scheduled events throughout the day. Our bus driver, Greg, was very professional, warm and welcoming. He helped to make the travels even more interesting by sharing some history of the surrounding area. My family and I are pleased. Looking forward to using your services in the future. Thank you so much.

We were very pleased with the outcome and performance by your company in the transportation of our employees.

- Lancaster General Hospital

We had a great time yesterday. Thank you so much. Things could not have gone more perfect. Our driver did a great job. We were running over a little on time, and I gave him the choice of skipping the last stop or keep going (which would mean we would get back to our return destination about 40 minutes later than scheduled). He said it was fine with him to keep going and complete our route. It was a great day. Thank you very much to Executive Coach, Inc.!

- Susan Threadworks Quilting

Went to Montreal and Quebec city over the weekend with a school trip...all three drivers were very professional and friendly. Our driver (Jay) was exceptional in communication and safety! I would highly recommend Executive Coach!

‘Super commuter' takes bus, train and plane to get to NYC job

The city believes there are 64,000 super commuters who travel from outside of the tri-state to work in manhattan., by melissa colorado • published april 14, 2024 • updated on april 16, 2024 at 10:29 am.

How far are you willing to commute to get to work?

Hairstylist Kaitlin Jorgensen works at a salon on Manhattan's Upper West Side, but it takes more than just a bus and a train ride to get her to the office.

Her commute also includes a plane ride.

"I'm able to take the first flight out of Charlotte on Wednesday morning," Jorgensen told News 4.

Get Tri-state area news and weather forecasts to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York newsletters.

That's right, Jorgensen lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her commute to work is nearly 600 miles.

"The pros are not paying New York City rent. As we know, it is quite expensive," she said.

Her commute, which she documents on TikTok, involves an Uber to the airport, an hour and a half flight to LaGuardia Airport, hopping on the bus to Manhattan and then transferring to a train to get to the Upper West Side. And voilà, she's at work.

"I've been doing this commute for almost a year now," the super commuter shared.

Jorgensen said the extreme commute has saved her thousands of dollars -- most of that in rent. The average rent for an apartment in the city is roughly $3,747. It's less than half of that in Charlotte, where the average rent is a little more than $1,400.

"I stay at my friend Jenni’s house. I pay her a little bit for rent so it works out both ways that’s one of the things that made it really affordable to do this back and forth, I don’t have to get a hotel every time," she said.

Jorgensen is not alone. The city believes there are 64,000 super commuters who travel from outside of the tri-state to work in Manhattan.

The extreme commute underscores another issue – New York City’s unaffordability crisis. A recent report by the Center for Women’s Welfare uncovered half of all households do not earn enough to cover their basic needs.
