Shop L’ANGE Le Duo 360° Airflow Styler: Amazon | Ulta

2-in-1 Travel Curling Iron

If you need to curl and straighten your hair while traveling, then a 2-in-1 travel hair curler is a great option. You have access to both tools without sacrificing the extra space.

This travel sized curling iron by L’ANGE doubles as a flat iron, to give you a variety in your hair without having to worry about carrying multiple items. Plus, it’s a dual voltage curling iron, which means you can cart it around to any country in the world and not have to worry about blowing a fuse.

I’ve always traveled with both a curling and flat iron (unless I’ve had my hair permanently straightened recently) so when I found this 2-in-1 travel hair curler, it was the perfect solution.

You can choose your preferred heat with the adjustable temperature setting of 280°F-430°F. My hair is fine and wavy, but the roots carry some extra curl, so when I brought this on a four-week trip, it took a few extra glides.

All things considered, I have to say this 2-in-1 curling and straightening tool is one of the best travel curling iron tools out there. It works perfectly for the occasional curl and daily smoothing.

Mini Travel Curling Wand to Save Space

If you have limited space but want to bring a travel hair curler along with you on your next trip, then a mini curling wand might be the solution for you

Conair ThermaCell Compact Curling Iron

Cordless Curling Iron for on the Go

When you travel with electronic devices or hair styling tools, you have to think about plugs, adapters, and voltage. Especially if you’re traveling to somewhere like Europe, where the plugs don’t match. Unless you travel with a cordless curling iron.

I had always wanted cordless hair tools for road trips or places where access to power outlets aren’t easy to come by. Measuring a mere 6.4 inches, the ThermaCell by Conair is the ultimate cordless curler to carry throughout your travels!

Our favorite feature of this cordless curling tool is obviously the fact that there are no plugs or batteries to fuss with. And the ThermaCell cartridges last several months, so you can style your hair anytime, anywhere without worrying about running out of juice.

The ThermaCell also saves you time by heating up in as little as 30 seconds, giving you plenty of time to hit the city and enjoy your vacation. This portable curling wand is a great addition to your packing list, and due to the lack of cord, you don’t even have to worry about the voltage. Roadtrip, here we come!

The Importance of Dual Voltage Curling Irons

Before you head off to purchase you’re favorite of the best travel curling iron options, we need to have a chat about the importance of a dual voltage curling iron. Voltage refers simply to electricity, and different countries you might travel to have different types of electricity. For example, here in the US, we use 110-120V, but in Europe, they use 220-240V.

There’s a good chance that your electronics are built for the same voltage as the country in which you bought them. That means that if you take your non-dual voltage hair curler with you while you’re visiting another country, it might not work. In fact, you could even blow a fuse or destroy your travel hair tool if you try to use it. Not cool!

If you want a full run-down on voltage by country, you can check out this World Standards page .

Learn about voltage converters vs. adapters !

To use your favorite travel curling iron in another country, you’re going to need two things:

  • The correct voltage
  • A travel adapter

Your hair styling tools, including blow dryers, curling wands and irons, and hair straighteners use a ton of electricity. That means it’s important they they are used with the correct voltage.

Some hair tools are labeled “dual-voltage,” which means they’ve been designed to be used in multiple countries. If you’re traveling outside of the US (or a country that uses the same voltage) you’re going to want to bring your dual voltage curler with you.

Once you have your hands on a dual voltage curling iron, you’re also going to need a travel adapter. A travel adapter enables you to plug your electronics into international outlets while you travel. Since not every country uses the same type of plug, we highly recommend you buy an international adapter .

Visit this power outlet guide for travelers to see a full list of plugs and outlets by country!

The Best Travel Curling Iron for the US

If you’re both from the US and traveling within the US, you won’t need to get a dual voltage curling iron. But you might want to save some space by choosing to travel with a mini curling iron.

If you are traveling to the US from a country outside of the US, you’ll need to travel with a dual voltage curler (you can still save space by getting yourself a mini iron). Make sure that you switch the voltage to 110V/120V before using your travel hair curler once you’ve arrived in the US.

The Best Travel Curling Iron for Europe

Is your travel curling iron dual voltage? If so, then that is the one you’ll want to use if you’re traveling from the US to Europe, Asia, Africa, or the South Pacific.

If the one you have at home is not a dual voltage curling iron, you’ll want to look into purchasing a new one for your travels (but avoid the 1-inch Mini Hair Curling Iron because it doesn’t have that feature).

Note that if you purchase a travel curling iron for Europe while you’re there, it likely will be a curling iron with a European plug. If you’re from the US, a European curling iron won’t help much when you get home!

A dual voltage curling iron is not automatically set for travel, so make sure to switch your hair tools to 220V/240V before you use them at your destination!

So, are you ready to spend your vacation with beautiful curls without the fuss? The best travel curling iron can easily take your hair from flat to va-va-voom in a matter of minutes!

Regarding the cordless one, can it be brought onto the airplane in carryon?

Lori Parsons

I would like to purchase a 220v -2 prong curling iron. Not a dual voltage. They are not consistent in overheating even with all the adapters and “dual capability.”

I simply want to purchase a European 2-prong curling iron. Could someone post that as a purchase option please?

I bought two of the 6th Sense Styling Technology. One for travel/gym bag and one for home. I love it so much!

Thanks for sharing your love of your curling iron with us Jillian! Always love hearing the feedback of our readers!

Sandra Manners

I always travel with a normal size curling iron but find it is a little too long to fit comfortably in my personal item. I purchased the Conair Mini Pro Ceramic but found it was too hard to use on my shoulder-length hair. I kept burning my fingers! I think it would work well for someone with short hair, however. I returned it and bought the AmoVee 2-in-1 curling iron. This one is a keeper. Much easier to use and I like the padded sleeve that comes with it. It is dual voltage too! In the meantime, I stumbled across an old Charlescraft Quartette curling iron in a second-hand store for $10. The handle and the four curling iron barrels are separate and snap together. Smart design! It is not dual voltage but I can use it for domestic travel. I notice a similar one (Triplette instead of Quartette) is for sale on Poshmark.

Katherine

The best thing I’ve used is my Karmin curling iron, I love it.❤❤❤

Hi Katherine, thank you for sharing how you like to style your hair when traveling with us! ?

Heidi.

I prefer Karmin.

Hi Heidi, thank you for sharing your recommendation with us! 🙂

Best Travel Curling Iron 2022 – Buyer’s Guide

Looking for the best travel curling iron?

It is almost impossible to maintain a hairstyle naturally when you are on a travel, camping, adventure trip or outside for project work! If the location has an electrical problem, it can be worse!

However, if you carry a light, portable, manageable, usable travel-friendly butane curling iron for international travel, it can be possible. The travel-friendly butane technology supported curling iron specifically is designed for travelers who want a quick hairstyle. So it has to have some precise criteria to be an efficient and better curling iron while traveling.

Conair Travel Curling Iron with Storage, 1- Inch Ceramic Curling Iron in Gold by Travel Smart

Table of Contents

Features to look for in the best travel curling iron

Travel-friendly curling irons must be lightweight and small compared to other general curling irons. People prefer to purchase mini curling irons to use them when  traveling so that they don’t take extra space in the luggage! A mini curling iron looks identical to a conventional curling iron, except the barrel and handle are smaller than normal.

For the best travel size curling iron, the barrel size is typically 5/8 or 3/4 inches, maximum 1 inch. If you have large or thick hair, try to use 1”. If you have short hair, go for less than 1”. It will help to carry and manage curling iron while traveling.

The barrel material should get perfect, durable, and damage-free hair and have fastest and high heat transfer for immediate and superior results. Ceramic is the perfect material for a travel-friendly curling iron. User should check the handle and the plate material of curling iron

The biggest barrier of travel-friendly curling iron is a voltage meter for plugging. It is particularly the case when you’re traveling overseas and need to bring along plug and voltage adapters to use styling appliances. The products that have a dual voltage of standard 120V used in the US and 240V for operation in foreign countries are more preferable. Dual voltage curling iron can be used without a voltage adapter though users will need US to EU plug adapter. Countries that work without a voltage adapter are Germany, The Netherlands, France, Austria, Italy, and Spain.

Some Common Adapter Plug Types

The chart below lists is the appropriate adapter plug models for the most familiar travel destinations.

Cordless curling irons solve the plug problem entirely, as they don’t rely on electricity for power.

Most cordless curling irons run on butane cartridges and get hot when this pressurized liquid safely combusts inside of the appliance. While you don’t have to recharge batteries to continue using a butane-powered cordless curling iron, it is necessary to replace the cartridges regularly.

Temperature

The temperature should be similar to a usual curling iron. It must have many heats setting options with lowest heat (200°F) and the highest heat (450°F).

It’s compact: The stylish neat and portable size makes it easy to store away or pack up for travel.

  • Please keep your Travel-friendly Curling Iron safely especially cordless. If it turns on, an auto can cause a harmful accident.
  • Carry your small and light curling iron in the bag that can easily find.
  • As you are traveling, your hair will be dirtier. So Hair must washout with a deep-clean shampoo that will give a chunky look. Then conditioning hair only ends not in the roots and uses it half. Conditioner can drag down your hair, which can make curls drop out of it.
  • Blow-dry hair upside down with your hands until hair is completely dry. Do not curl hair when it is wet.
  • A mousse or curling cream creates body and helps tired hair to hold curls.

FAQs on curling iron for international travel

1. can curling irons go through airport security.

According to the TSA, curling irons are only allowed in hand luggage and not in checked luggage. But they require a safety cover so as to prevent accidental activation. If it is a battery-operated curler, you should remove the batteries and put them in the check-in baggage.

2. What to look for in a travel curling iron?

If you need to travel with your curling iron, you should look for one which is lightweight and travel-friendly. It should facilitate dual-voltage so you can carry it to any place in the world. A cordless one could also be less cumbersome to carry. Try one with a universal 1” barrel so you don’t have to carry too many accessories.

3. Can you use your curling iron in Spain and other countries in Europe?

It depends on the make of the curling iron. In case it is the dual voltage you need not carry a power adapter. If the curling iron runs on 230volts of power it is a compatible appliance to use in Spain. However, for other European countries, you might need to check the specification if it is 110-240v it means the multi worldwide voltage .

Keep reading for a more detailed review of each travel curling iron, if you can bring a curling iron in carry on luggage, and info for international travel needs.

Can you Bring a Mini Curling Iron on a Plane?

According to the TSA, in the USA you can bring your mini curling iron on a plane in your carry on luggage or checked baggage. The only caveat for carry on baggage is that it’s a travel curling iron with an electric cord, not butane powered.

Can I Pack my Travel Curling Iron in Carry on Luggage? The Answer is Yes.

All of our recommendations below are for travel curling irons that are allowed in your carry on in the USA. Outside of the USA, I’m not sure. I strongly suggest checking the rules for the country you’re flying to for their rules on hair styling tools.

Dual Voltage Curling Iron for International Travel

You can skip this section and scroll down if you’re traveling domestically within North America.

If you’re traveling internationally, you may need a dual voltage curling iron. Seven of the ten curling irons we reviewed are dual voltage curling irons, so please take this into consideration if you’re traveling outside of North America.

1 inch travel curling iron

It’s also a good idea to check on the plug type of the country you’re traveling to. Your new travel curling iron may need a special adapter, in addition to being dual voltage, to be used outside of North America.

Below are a few examples of the plug type, voltage, and adapter type for hair styling tools a North American would need for travel to the below countries. The plug type and adapter type are from the International Electrotechnical Commission and are consistent throughout the world.

If the country you’re traveling to isn’t listed, just Google the country you’re traveling to and what voltage and plug type they use. If the voltage is above 127, you will need a dual voltage curling iron. If the plug type is other than A or B, you will need an adapter.

And now, let’s get to the travel curling iron reviews…

Our Testing Process

What to keep in mind, your questions, answered, what is instyle picks, why shop with us.

There’s no one right way to style hair, but few tools are quite so versatile as a curling iron. Whether you like your curls tight and coily, loose and wavy, uniform and polished, or textured and messy, using a curling iron makes it easy to create a vast array of looks with one simple tool.

If you’ve never had a curling iron in your hair arsenal — or worse, have had one in your lineup but have been left unsatisfied — there is a lot to consider before investing, especially for these notoriously tricky tools. You’ll need to consider your natural hair type, the health of your hair, and (of course) the look you’re trying to achieve. Not to mention, the perfect curling iron needs to be a snap to use (no one has time for an extended learning curve). With so many different curling irons on the market, combing through all your options is no easy task —  so we did it for you.

Our team of InStyle editors rigorously tested the 14 buzziest and most popular curling irons out there. We used the tool across every hair type in our New York City-based Lab, as well as in our own natural hair for two weeks. For each curling iron, we measured the speed at which the iron came to our desired temperature, the ease of using it, the durability of the curl (using benchmarks of one hour, six hours, and overnight), clamp tension, range of heat settings, and then assessed our hair for any damage during and after use. We also considered the way our hair looked overall after each styling session. After compiling and evaluating all the testing data, we ranked each curling iron, and the highest scoring tools are featured on this list.

Best Overall

Hot tools pro artist digital curling iron.

What We Love: This tool performs flawlessly across all hair types.

What We Don't Love: Those with finer hair may find that their hair slips out of the iron during use.

It’s rare to find a curling iron that delivers a solid curl across all hair textures regardless of the size of the barrel, but this one from Hot Tools did just that. We tried three different sized barrels — 0.75-inch, 1.25-inch, and 1.5-inch —  and we found that each one delivered on their styling promises (beachy waves for larger sizes, tighter curls for smaller). Not only did our curls look great immediately after styling, but they also held their shape for the rest of the day, and even sometimes the next morning.

Design-wise, we were impressed with all the helpful features: It heated up in just a few seconds and conveniently beeped when it was ready. The clamp was comfortable and never caught or tugged at our hair, and the digital temperature screen made it easy to view and adjust the heat as needed. The extra long cord was another unexpected, but appreciated detail. Clocking in at nine feet, it was very easy to maneuver the tool around our heads, even when the outlet was a distance away from our mirror and our vanity was cluttered with beauty products.

Most hot tools will break when used with a power converter abroad, but because this tool offers dual voltage, we were able to safely style our hair while traveling outside of the country.

Though this curling iron worked beautifully across all hair types, the clamp wasn’t quite tight enough to fully secure our fine strands and the baby hairs sometimes slipped out. With a few spritzes of a dry shampoo or texturizing spray that have some hold and grip, we were easily able to touch up our curls.

Best Budget

Conair tourmaline ceramic curling iron.

What We Love: Beyond the price, we loved how smooth it made our hair and the even, consistent curl pattern it created.

What We Don't Love: The clamp is removable, which sometimes made it harder to use.

If you’ve ever experienced the phenomenon of never achieving the same result twice with a curling iron, this tool should be on your radar — especially at such a wallet-friendly price. The Infinitipro consistently spat out shiny, glossy curls that lasted through the day and beyond, especially on thicker and more textured hair. In fact, we found that our curls lasted up to four days on our very curly hair — no touch-ups required.

With the unique removable clamp, this iron is actually a two-in-one: It can be used as a traditional curling iron or as a wand to achieve a wide range of styles. While we enjoyed the duality, if the clamp wasn’t correctly attached it fell off mid-use and snagged our hair. When we took the time to secure it, it was smooth curling.

Finding a two-in-on hot tool under $30 is a rare gem, and despite the clamp mishaps, we still love the way our hair looked (and a good deal, too).

Barrel Size: 0.75-inch, 1-inch, 1.25-inch, 1.5-inch | Barrel Material: Tourmaline, ceramic  | Automatic Shut Off: Yes

Best Splurge

Dyson airwrap.

What We Love: This styling system is basically an entire salon’s worth of hot tools in one device.

What We Don't Love: Because this tool harnesses air to curl hair, it sometimes sucks up pieces of already-styled strands when trying to work on a new section.

If you’re skeptical about spending so much money on a hot tool, believe us when we say that the Dyson Airwrap is worth the investment (and the hype). With just one purchase, you’ll get the tool itself, six attachments, and a sleek leather storage box to keep it all in, meaning you can cut down your collection of heat stylers to just this (amazing) one.

Unlike many other options, Dyson taps air instead of a heated surface to curl the hair, and to our delight, we experienced zero heat damage, even when we used it several times a week on bonded hair extensions. With the Airwrap, we didn’t have to get super close to our scalp and risk the integrity of the bonds in order to get our extensions to support a curl. It’s also worth noting that we used the second generation Airwrap that comes with barrels that allow you to switch the direction of the airflow. Although it's a small detail, it had a big payoff because it made it super easy for us to ensure our curls were all facing the right direction. Our curls held well, though on finer hair, the larger barrel resulted in more of a bouncy blowout effect than a true curl.

The strong suction powers on this device created solid curls, but that also meant it often sucked in pieces we had already styled. We recommend pinning up finished sections — not only will this help keep them out of the way, it’ll also help the curl set and last longer.

Best for Damaged Hair

Shark flexstyle air styling and drying system.

What We Love: This device from Shark offers similar technology to the Dyson, along with unique attachment options to choose from, at half the price.

What We Don't Love: There are barrels for both left- and right-facing curls, so you’ll have to switch them out as you work.

If you’re not ready to splurge on the Airwrap but want a hot air-based curling iron that will care for your damaged hair, the Shark is your best — and most customizable — option. In this choose your own adventure, hairstyling edition, you’re free to select three attachments (out of eight total options), which include two curling barrel sizes, a variety of brushes, concentrator, comb, and even a diffuser.

Although the Shark looked intimidating, we got the hang of it quickly and were styling our hair like pros within minutes. While the tool does heat up, it never reached a temperature that scorched our hair or scalp, instead producing a lasting curl that required few, if any, touch-ups. We were never able to master a tight ringlet; we’d compare our final look as model off-duty beach waves, which is perfectly fine by us.

Despite how easy the Shark was to operate, it was a bit annoying having to switch out barrels to change the direction of our curl. That said, this only takes a few seconds, and  Shark clearly distinguishes between the two — there is a very clear “L” and “R” on the corresponding attachments.

Barrel Size: 0.59-inch, 1.25-inch | Barrel Material: Not applicable, uses air

Best for Beginners

Ghd 1-inch curling iron.

What We Love: This is the lightest curling iron we’ve ever held, making it very comfortable to use during long styling sessions.

What We Don't Love: There is only one heat setting, which may not work for all hair types.

If you’re new to using a curling iron, you might find yourself getting tired while styling — they’re often so heavy that you end up getting a vigorous arm workout along with a head full of curls. Even though this tool is a premium and well-made device, it feels incredibly light (the lightest we’ve ever tried), making it a breeze to hold (an especially important quality for neophytes) as it works to give hair a lasting curl with minimal frizz.

Interestingly, the iron only has one heat setting (365 degrees); it’s considered a safe temperature for most hair types, so it didn’t really bother us. However, when we tested the iron on very fine hair, the heat zapped too much moisture from our strands and left our hair steaming after just a few seconds. We didn’t encounter any issues with thicker hair, though. In fact, when used on type 2 and 4 textures, our curls maintained their shape for days.

Temperature aside, we liked the clamp’s nice, strong grip that didn’t yank at our hair, but kept it firmly in place as we styled, while the barrel was smooth enough to slide our finished curls right off.

As a bonus, if you travel frequently, you’ll enjoy the universal voltage (no frying your hot tool on vacation!) and the automatic sleep mode, which kicks in after 30 minutes (it’s easy to forget to turn off a curling iron, especially when jet-lagged).

Best for Beach Waves

Instyler cerasilk curling iron.

What We Love: The ultra-long barrel is perfect for creating loose, mermaid-like waves.

What We Don't Love: This doesn’t have a clamp, which is terrific for making waves, but requires a bit of a learning curve.

When creating beach waves, we find it’s easiest to achieve that look when using a long-barreled curling wand without a clamp, and this tool from InStyler fits the bill. Thanks to the clamp-free design, we were able to loosely wrap our hair along the barrel, creating elongated curls that even a mermaid would envy. That said, the tip of this styling tool features a unique “feeder” grip tip that allows for easy one-handed styling, so if you prefer a clamp, you do have options.

The barrel of this curling wand features a special coating that allows heat to pass through without allowing hair to directly touch the heat source, ultimately cutting way down on potential damage. Even our fine hair, which never held a curl for more than two minutes, met its match with this curling wand — our waves lasted much longer than they did with any other hot tool.

For many people, using a curling wand is far easier than a traditional curling iron because of the way you can customize your curl. On the flip side, it’ll take some trial and error to master your technique. If you’re winding your hair too tightly around the barrel of the InStyler, you’ll get tight ringlets, though they will relax and get beachier, especially if you brush them out. Practice makes perfect with this one!

Best for Thick Hair

T3 switch kit wave trio.

What We Love: This interchangeable tool comes with three barrels, so it’s like three curling irons in one.

What We Don't Love: It is hard to safely change out the barrels when they’re hot if you want to create a look with different types of curls.

This clever tool is perfect for cutting down on beauty bag bulk (the set comes with three barrels for triple the looks) and is particularly excellent for curling thick hair — a single styling session gave us shampoo commercial-level bounce that lasted for days.

Somehow, we always end up losing a few good strands to deadly clamps, but with the T3, our hair never once got stuck. We also loved the huge variety of heat settings, so we didn’t have to settle for too-hot temps, which diffused evenly down the barrel (no fried ends!). It was also pretty light, and we managed to curl all the way around in 20 minutes.

The interchangeable barrels set this pick apart from other options, too. Each attachment securely fastened into the base, thanks to a twistable locking mechanism, which doubled as a stand so the hot surface didn’t scorch our countertop. We also liked that this tool features universal voltage, making it travel friendly.

Our only gripe was that you have to hold and twist the barrel itself to remove it and swap it out for another. Happily, this set comes with a heat-resistant glove, so you can wear it if you’re planning on creating a style with a range of curl sizes.

Barrel Size: 1-inch, 1.25-inch, 1.5-inch | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Automatic Shut Off: Yes

Best for Long Hair

Bio ionic long barrel curling iron.

What We Love: The length of this barrel made it easy to style the back of our heads — a notoriously tricky spot to reach.

What We Don't Love: This hot tool didn’t provide a strong-holding curl on thicker hair.

With a barrel that’s two inches longer than the average curling iron, this iron is an excellent choice for those with long hair. We curled our almost waist-length strands in one go, never needing to go over the same section twice. We just kept wrapping our hair around the barrel until we reached the end. We bet even those with shorter hair will find the barrel length helpful to grab the hard-to-reach pieces in the back. One small but mighty detail we loved was the generously-sized cool tip at the end of the barrel, so we could control the iron without burning our fingers. We were able to craft loose, beachy waves without much effort — we didn’t even need to brush our hair once we were finished because this iron produced such natural-looking waves.

For the most part, our finished look maintained shape throughout the day. Although when we tested it on thick hair, we found that our style didn’t last as long and required frequent touch-ups. With that in mind, it may not be the best pick for thick or heavy hair, but it was brilliant with fine to medium strands.

Best for Short Hair

Babylisspro nano titanium curling iron.

What We Love: This tool’s clamp never left hard lines or crimps in our curls.

What We Don't Love: The temperature gauge isn't very straightforward.

When looking for a curling iron for short hair , it's important to get it right, since you have limited real estate to get the perfect ringlet — and irons with long barrels aren’t the easiest to maneuver. But because this BaByliss tool has a short wand and a gentle, yet effective clamp, it was super simple for us to form smooth, glorious curls, leaving our shoulder-length hair free of any harsh bends or creases that we sometimes get from other irons.

We had the option to choose between four barrel sizes, and we tested the 0.75-inch. At first, we were annoyed by how long it was taking us to curl our hair (after all, smaller barrels meant we had to use smaller sections of hair). Despite our grumbling, that extra time was worth the effort: Firm, stunning curls with kangaroo-levels of bounce. With a quick finger comb and light brushing, along with a spritz of hairspray, the style slayed all day and night. We even rocked the wavy remnants the next day.

The only downside of this tool is the temperature gauge — there are almost too many options to choose from and we’re still not exactly sure what some of the settings do (we’re talking to you, Boost mode). That said, we loved the results that we got from this tool, and the price is hard to beat.

Barrel Size: 0.75-inch, 1-inch, 1.25-inch, 1.5-inch | Barrel Material: Titanium, ceramic | Automatic Shut Off: No

Best for Fine Hair

Tymo cues curling iron.

What We Love: This is the most affordable and interchangeable curling iron on our list.

What We Don't Love: The power button and temperature controls are awkwardly placed.

We’ve never seen much success when using a curling iron on our fine hair. We had almost given up, accepting that our hair would always just slide out of the clamp looking like a wet noodle. That all changed when we tested this hero tool. Though it’s pretty budget friendly, it comes with pricier features, including three detachable barrels in different sizes, an LED temperature screen, and accessories, like a protective glove, hair clips, and storage bag.

While we’ve used a lot of curling irons that snagged our fine strands in the past, the smooth barrels and an unfussy clamp (with a comfortable grip) on this one allowed our curls to gently roll off when we were done. Our finished look actually lasted four days with this tool — a downright miracle for our hair. We attribute the longevity in part to the helpful temperature guide, which taught us that we’ve been curling our hair with too much heat.

If we could change one thing about this nearly perfect curling iron, it would be the awkward button placement. There is just one button to power the iron on/off and to change the temperature (pressing and holding for a few seconds turns it on/off and simply hitting it, even softly, adjusts the temperature) and it’s unwisely situated right where you hold the handle. A mild annoyance is a small sacrifice for the fabulous curls it gave us.

Barrel Size: 0.5-inch, 1-inch, 1.5-inch | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Automatic Shut Off: Yes

InStyle / Emma Phelps

To ensure we thoroughly analyzed the performance of each device, we tested each curling iron across many metrics. We started in our NYC-based Lab and used each iron to curl hair types 1–4, and evaluated the curls’ longevity by checking in at the one-hour mark, six-hour mark, and then overnight to see how well each held the curl.

Once this portion of the test was complete, we sent each curling iron to three editors, each with a different hair type and texture, to incorporate into their hair styling routine over a two-week period. During this portion, we evaluated each iron for ease of use, the shape and endurance of the curls, the heat damage it caused (if any), and the overall quality of the final look. At the end of the two-week test, we compiled and digested the data from each editor, and then ranked each iron accordingly. Our very favorite curling irons earned the highest marks, and are featured on this list.

When selecting a curling iron, you’ll want to consider the qualities of your hair itself — not just the length, which may benefit from an extra-long curling rod like those found from InStyler Cerasilk Curling Iron and Bio Ionic Long Barrel Curling Iron . Think about the density, condition, and the texture of your hair as well, all of which will help you determine the optimal temperature setting, and narrow down your options.

If you have ultra-fine or damaged hair, you will want to select a curling iron that offers a low styling temperature. “Excessive heat will damage the cuticle further,” warns New York-based hairstylist Alwyn DiGregorio. “Lower temps with smaller sections will work just as well as higher temps and bigger sections.”

For hair that falls into this category, aim for a temperature of 350 degrees or below. Look at the Hot Tools Pro Artist Black Gold Digital Curling Iron , which features a very low starting temperature of 265 degrees, or an air-powered model, like the Dyson Airwrap or the Shark Air Styling and Drying System .

Thicker or coarse hair can withstand more heat — this is a good thing, because these hair types may find that their curls fall within an hour or two, due to the weight of their hair. For these hair types, New York City-based hairstylist Vennela Chamarti uses medium to high heat settings (around 375 degrees or above). This goes for super healthy hair, too. “Often, very silky and healthy hair doesn’t hold a curl as well, and therefore needs more heat,” she says.

ARKIVE Headcare founder, Adam Reed, prefers using one flat temperature for all hair, regardless of its texture or type — 365 degrees, which he says is the best universal styling temperature. “365 degrees is the most respectful temperature to any hair type,” he says. “It’ll warm any hair type enough to mold it into the curl you want — if you go above that you risk higher damage, and if you go below that the curls will fall.” Conveniently, ghd Classic Curl 1-Inch Curling Iron is set at this precise temperature.

However, if your hair stubbornly refuses to hold a curl at all, we hate to admit it, but it’s likely due to user error. DiGregorio recommends taking smaller sections and using a slightly smaller barrel size, like the 0.75-inch version of Conair InfinitiPRO Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron . “Be mindful that each hair section can easily wrap around the iron with a little room to spare,” she says. “This enables the heat to reach every hair in the section.”

Charmarti also says to let your hair cool down completely after styling. Pinning your curls up (with rollers or clips) for at least 20 minutes will help them set.

Barrel Size

Perhaps the most daunting aspect of selecting a curling iron is navigating all of the barrel sizes. “Choose your barrel based on what look you’re going for,” says Reed. The larger the barrel, the looser your curl will be, so if you want a faux blowout effect or a beachy wave, look for a thick barrel.

DiGregorio recommends keeping your hair length under consideration, too. She uses 1-inch barrels for above-the-shoulder-length hair, 1.25-inch to 1.5-inch barrels for medium length hair, and 2-inch barrels on hair that’s lower than a bra hook. As mentioned, if your hair doesn’t hold a curl well, go with a smaller-sized barrel.

Ultimately, your hair type plays no role in what barrel size you should pick, just in how you style: “If you have thicker hair, use smaller sections on your hair; if you have thinner hair, you can use larger sections,” explains Reed.

Barrel Material

You’ll really only see three kinds of materials when it comes to curling iron barrels: Ceramic, tourmaline, and titanium. If you have coarse hair that is heat resistant, titanium is the way to go. “It’s a natural metal that heats up very fast and will help the heat penetrate fully through the hair,” says DiGregorio, who adds that it’s also a lightweight material to hold. You’ll find it in the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Spring Curling Iron .

Ceramic and tourmaline tools are a bit gentler on the hair as they don’t get quite as hot. DiGregorio likes ceramic, as she finds they create the most even heat throughout the iron. If you have an issue with the smoothness of your hair, check out a tourmaline tool. “Tourmaline is a crystal mineral that emits negative ions to counteract positive ions, which helps keep moisture and shine,” says DiGregorio.

What's the best way to use a curling iron?

The best way to use a curling iron is whatever way it feels most comfortable for you. Some people may prefer a wand, while others may prefer a traditional curling iron with a clamp. “Being able to curl your hair in a way that’s comfortable and doesn’t strain your arms will yield better results and less damage,” says Chamarti (that includes avoiding burning yourself!).

When it comes down to specific looks, you can create a tighter curl by using your iron just off the scalp. Meanwhile, you’ll achieve a looser style if you skip the root and start wrapping your hair about a third of the way down the shaft. “Holding the curl horizontally will make the curl fuller, vertically will provide a more relaxed look,” adds DiGregorio. If you’re going for a beach wave or modern vibe, Reed loves to curl hair in different directions to prevent uniformity or an overdone look. “If you’re looking for classic curls, keep the iron going in one direction,” he says.

The most important thing to do when styling your hair with a curling iron is to keep things moving to avoid heat damage. “Do not leave the iron on your hair for too long,” warns Reed. “If I’m doing a wave or a curl, I’m always moving the tool underneath the hair to evenly distribute the heat and make sure one section isn’t being overheated.”

What's the difference between a curling iron and a curling wand?

The only true difference between curling irons and curling wands is that an iron has a clamp to hold your hair in place while you style. You’ll also find that wands come in more shapes than curling irons do, such as conical and bubble, says DiGregorio. The one-two punch of a unique shape, plus a lack of clamp makes it simpler to achieve beachy waves or undone look — putting less tension on the hair with your fingers will make for a looser curl. Curling irons will often result in a cleaner and tighter curl.

Ultimately, though, “a curling iron versus a curling wand is a personal preference — some people just like one more than the other,” says Reed.

How can I protect my hair from heat damage?

When it comes to heat damage, prevention is better than a cure. “If you know that you use a lot of heat on your hair, make sure a hair oil and a hair mask are a regular part of your hair routine,” says Reed.

DiGregorio also likes working Schwarzkopf Professional Fibre Clinix Fortify Sealed Ends from the mid-length to ends before going in with heat. “It’ll help nourish and repair bonds while keeping hair strong, soft, and shiny.”

Whatever you do, don’t take any kind of hot tool to your hair without priming your hair with a high-quality heat protectant first. If you prefer a cream styler, which will be best for dry or damaged hair, try DiGregorio’s pick, OSiS+ Tame Wild Cream , that will defend against temperatures up to 428 degrees. If a lightweight formula is more your thing, Chamarti likes working the L'Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Color 10-in-1 Multi-Benefit Leave-In Spray into hair before blow drying with a hair dryer that's good for curly hair .

That said, your choices can vary greatly "depending on the texture of the hair and the type of curl you are looking for," says Eugene Toye, stylist at Rita Hazan Salon in New York City — and with so many options on the market, from titanium to ceramic, tourmaline and even clamp-less curling wands , hair rollers and heat-free hair curlers , it can be difficult to know where to begin finding the right hair curler for you.

That's why we put all types of curling irons to the test in the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, to help you find the best curling irons that are actually worth your money.

During their evaluations, our Beauty Lab pros assess features like preheat time, temperature range, overall settings and ease of use. We also had a panel of at-home testers try the irons at home and report back on factors such as the lasting power of the resulting curls and ease of use. All told, our scientists and beauty pros parsed through more than 103 test measurements and 836 survey answers to find the only curling irons worth your money.

For more information on what to keep in mind as you shop for a curling iron (including material, barrel size, temperature and more), scroll to the bottom of this article. In the meantime, these are our reviews of the best curling irons you can buy.

For a classic clamp curler, give the highest-temp Ion a whirl — it came out on top in our tests for forming lasting curls, even on coarse, thick hair. This iron blew away the competition, scoring highest in nearly a dozen categories including grip and maneuvering, easy controls, compact size and producing curls that stay put.

Users loved that "that the clamp is as long as the barrel," which is particularly useful for shorter hair, and the shorter handle length "keeps my hand in a perfect position to reach the thumb grip," although it may get a bit hot when set up to the highest temperature.

In Lab testing, we also found that it took longer than other curlers to reach the highest temperature (160 seconds), so just be sure to give it ample time to heat up before styling.

Though we haven't put this pick to the test in the Lab yet, you can't beat the price of this classic and well-loved curling iron. Its bargain price is a huge selling point, and Amazon reviewers swear it's a worthy investment. It has adjustable heat and a ceramic coating, and for the price, it's a solid choice — just ask the 52,000+ five-star reviewers who say it works great on fine and thick hair alike .

"The adjustable temperature settings provide flexibility, allowing me to choose the heat level that works best for my hair type," says one Amazon reviewer. "Whether my hair is fine or thick, I can achieve the perfect balance of heat without causing excessive damage." At such a bargain price, it may not last last you for years and years, but it still does the job just fine.

You don't have to sacrifice perfectly styled hair when you travel: This pint-sized favorite features a 1 ¼" barrel and has all the features of the brand's top-performing original curling iron , just in a more portable package.

Though we haven't tested this one in-Lab, the brand claims it heats up in 30 seconds, and we love that it has a swivel cord and adjustable temperature settings. It weighs in at just over 6 ounces, which makes it perfectly portable too. Keep in mind the shorter barrel is best-suited for short hair, though it'll work on any length with a bit more effort.

Created by hairstylist Sarah Potempa, this time-saving, automated curling iron is the only one GH Beauty Director April Franzino uses. "It rotates away from your face , taking the guesswork out of curling hair, " she says. "All you have to do is clamp a section of hair at the bottom, press the button and watch as it winds around the curler. Hold for a few seconds, release and you have a perfect loose curl."

Other beauty pros at GH similarly love this tool. Lab testers noted that "it grips hair well," and the resulting "curls are well-defined and stay in place" for "beautiful, natural looking curls in no time." There's a bit of a learning curve, though, and it's best for long hair; testers with short hair found the small clip difficult to use.

Sick of running out of space on your wand to curl your long hair, or having to wrap hair multiple times over itself? This tool works especially well for longer hai r tha nks to the extended length of the barrel, which the brand claims is two inches longer than most curling irons with a clamp that runs nearly the full length of the barrel as well for fast, easy styling.

Though we haven't tested this pick in the Lab, fans love that their style lasts for hours, with one reviewer saying her "curls last the whole day and I still can have loose curls the next day." While we think the long barrel is a brilliant solution for those with long hair, it may not be best-suited for those with shorter hair — and the long barrel can take some getting used to at first, too.

This clever iron is actually three tools in one: A flat iron, a curling wand and a curling iron. The 1 ¼-inch barrel is perfect for glam waves and curls, and our short-haired testers particularly loved it, saying "it was easy to maneuver and keep from touching the face or scalp, " and that it felt the safest of all options with a low burn risk.

In Lab tests, it scored in the middle of the pack in everything from ease of use to performance to user satisfaction. While short barrel and compact design makes it foolproof to use on shorter tresses (and the perfect size for travel, too), the tool may be too short to use effectively on longer hair.

Twirl Trio Interchangeable Clip Curling Iron Set

Get the impact of three separate tools in one neat package: This interchangeable iron comes with three barrel sizes ranging from 1 inch to 1 ½ inches, with even more barrels available for separate purchase including tapered barrels. Testers found the interchangeable mechanism and lock impressive, saying "the barrels did not wobble once locked in," but switching the barrels takes some getting used to.

This pick scored highly in our Beauty Lab tests for long-lasting curls and easy release of hair without pulling or snagging for super smooth styling, which is always a plus, but it comes at a high price — this pick is among the most expensive on our list.

Scoring tops for easy maneuverability and ergonomic design, this curling iron is great for beginners — plus, it won't break the bank for first-time users. Testers loved that "the clamp is long and clips hair well; it does not pinch it at the end," making it easy to use for novices.

At 0.9 pounds, testers also found it lightweight and easy to control with "a classic design, simple and functional," though the temperature is controlled via dial instead of specific buttons, and it lacks an alert when it reaches temperature. Its slimmer-than-average handle is comfortable to hold. It's also the go-to curling iron for many of salon pros we spoke with: "I use Hot Tools curling irons both at home and in salon," says Toye. We just wish it had an audible indicator when it reached temperature.

This solid iron scored high in ease of use, performance and satisfaction in our tests and earned the highest mark of all irons for creating curls that lasted throughout the day, which is perfect for thick hair that might typically be resistant to holding a style . It scored highest for releasing hair from the clamp without snagging or pulling hair, including a perfect score for its clamp.

Testers said, "the barrel is smooth and clip works well," though some found the thumb clamp tricky to press. This iron also reaches the highest temperature that we tested, a whopping 450ºF which is ideal for forming long-lasting curls in even thick, coarse, natural textured or hard-to-curl hair.

Fine hair is fragile and can be difficult to curl for fear of breakage, as well as its tendency to fall flat. That's why this iron from Revlon is a great pick for those with thin hair: Its adjustable temperature reaches the lowest setting in our roundup at 225ºF , and it still performed toward the top of the pack for long-lasting curls and curling without snagging.

It scored high for ergonomics and intuitiveness, and our Lab pros found it had good instructions that may be helpful for fine haired users to prevent over-experimentation (a.k.a. increased risk of damage). One downfall: we wish the cord was longer for easier styling. At under six feet, it makes maneuvering the tool a little difficult.

FHI Heat Heat Platform Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron

Heat Platform Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron

Another top performer in Lab tests, this pick performed well across the board, scoring highest in speed of styling , as well as top ranks for consumer satisfaction, even despite what some called "poor button placement ." Testers noted that it heated up fast loved how speedy it was when styling: “It worked super-fast and my curls were locked in all day, which is hard to achieve with my heavy, straight hair." Others said hair was "noticeably shiny and a little less frizzy.”

Drybar Mixologist Interchangeable Styling Iron

Mixologist Interchangeable Styling Iron

While we haven't formally tested this exact model in the Lab yet, Drybar's curling wand has performed well in our Lab tests, so it's no surprise this three-in-one pick is a fan favorite.

It has three useful attachments for all of your curling needs and then some: A 1-inch wand for undone beach waves, a 1 ¼-inch curling iron for polished curls and a three-pronged waver for messy texture. Plus, the clamp on the curling iron is heated so you can also use the larger barrel as a wand or a smoothing flat iron, of sorts.

One GH editor who has tried it says, "the mechanism to switch the attachments is easy to use and feels secure and safe, while the display is bright and the rubberized buttons are intuitive and simple to press." While she wishes there was a better kickstand to keep the heating element from resting on the counter, she adds the tool does heat up quickly on every mode and every barrel is smooth and snag-free for glossy, smooth styling.

Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler

Airwrap Multi-Styler

Our Beauty Lab pros love the Dyson Airwrap: Like a hair dryer and curling iron in one, this high-tech styling tool uses six powerful streams of hot or cool air to magically style your hair from damp to dry.

"I admire the genius air jet design, which makes hair strands, as if by magic, wrap themselves around the curler attachment ,” says Birnur Aral, Ph.D. , executive director of the GH Beauty Lab. The result: Bouncy bends that rival a professional blowout. "It gives salon-level styling using lower heat, which can minimize damage as well," she explains.

But all of this innovation comes with a sky-high sticker price. If it means you're able to swap out your hair dryer, flat iron and curling tools for one item, though, we think it's justifiable. You can also opt for sets that target different hair types and textures, including long or short barrel sets, and attachments for kinky hair.

ghd Classic Curl Curling Iron

Classic Curl Curling Iron

This sleek one-inch model has universal voltage and earned dozens of raves with reviewers, including those with thin hair. "I have fine hair and it is wonderful to find a curling iron that actually does what I need it to," one Nordstrom reviewer said. We haven't Lab-tested this iron, but it's a consistent top-seller with a cult following (and a GH beauty editor fave!).

While no heat tool can be "damage-free," in our Beauty Lab's test of flat irons , we found that ghd's tools maintained a steady temperature of 365º which helps prevent excessive heat damage, unlike other models that can exceed 450º, so we expect the brand's curling iron to perform similarly. The downside, though, is that a single temperature may not suit all different hair types, textures and thicknesses.

How we test curling irons

ghi testing best curling irons

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, we test curling irons for factors such as speed of preheat, whether the tools actually heat up to (or exceed) the temperature settings indicated on the tool and whether other parts of the iron get hot to the touch.

We also have a panel of testers try them out at home and report back on how well the curling irons create curls, how long the curls last and how easy and comfortable the tools are to use.

To put together this list of the best curling irons on the market, our scientists and beauty pros parsed through over 103 test measurements and 836 survey answers . We also consulted hairstylists and our own beauty editors for additional insight on what makes the best hair tool, and considered online reviews and recommendations from GH staffers.

How to find the right curling iron for your hair

line break

There are a few features and considerations you'll want to look for to ensure you're choosing the right curling iron for your hair type and goals. Here's what to keep in mind as you get started with shopping:

✔️ Barrel size: "Depending on the texture of the hair and the type of curl you are looking for, then you would determine which size barrel to use," says Toye. If you want relaxed, beachy waves, reach for a larger barrel (1 ¼-inch and above). The smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl will be. If your hair is hard to curl, look for a 1-inch barrel for a curl that is less likely to fall flat through the day. Want a do-it-all size? "A curling iron with a 1 ¼ inch barrel is a good size for everyday curls, no matter what look you are going for," says Toye.

✔️ Material: The GH Beauty Lab has found both ceramic and titanium curling irons are good conductors of heat and will work on all hair types, so try not to get persuaded by marketing claims that state one is better than the next. Toye, however, says that stylists tend to opt for titanium irons, since he finds they are lighter-weight than ceramic and can more effectively hold high temperatures, although ceramic irons can be more user-friendly due to their ability to evenly distribute heat.

✔️ Clamp : For ultimate versatility, look for an extended clip that spans the full length of the barrel. This way, the curling iron can also be used to somewhat smooth hair too, if you need. Some models can be used as wands by wrapping hair over the clip for looser curls and waves. "Clamps tend to leave marks in the hair if they are not properly used," says Toye, which is why some "prefer a clamp-less wand: because it is more user-friendly." ✔️ Adjustable heat settings : "I recommend a curling iron with adjustable heat settings," says Toye. Lower temps are great for fine hair for those thinner hairs around the face, while higher temps are great for coarse, natural or hard-to-curl hair. As a rule of thumb, our Beauty Lab experts say you should use low heat on fine, chemically processed or fragile hair (180ºF to 370ºF); medium heat on easy-to-curl, healthy hair (375ºF to 395ºF); and high heat on thick, wavy or natural hair (400ºF to 420ºF).

✔️ Cord : It might not seem important, but a good cord can make or break the styling experience. A professional-length cord on a curling iron is nine feet long — anything shorter may make it difficult to maneuver when styling. We also love a swivel mechanism, which prevents the cord from getting tangled or wrapped up as you style.

✔️ Automatic shut-off : Our testers love irons with an auto shut-off feature. You'll never have to worry about remembering to unplug your curling iron because it shuts off for you.

What curling iron do stylists use?

line break

There's a lot of debate around whether ceramic or titanium is better for heat styling tools, but when it comes to the in-salon choice, Toye says, " Titanium would be the most preferred by stylists , and tourmaline and ceramic are more popular among the average consumer.

Why? He explains that titanium barrels are usually lighter than ceramic and can hold high temperatures longer, while ceramic barrels distribute heat more evenly and are less likely to damage hair, so they are more suitable for at-home consumers with different hair textures.

The 9 Best Curling Irons for Long-Lasting Bounce (We Tested Dozens)

Our top picks for creating smooth, long-lasting curls.

1 inch travel curling iron

Byrdie / Jhett Thompson

Sure, heatless curling hacks on TikTok are entertaining and fun to experiment with, but nothing will help you achieve the perfect curl every time like a really great curling iron. Be it loose waves or tight ringlets that you’re after, there’s a curling iron out there that will help you master the look. The best options are made with high-quality materials, feature ergonomic designs, have multiple heat settings, and are easy to use, but finding one that ticks all of these boxes while giving you the results you crave isn’t easy.

So, we put tons of options to the test in our lab facility in NYC, as well as tested them at home in our daily lives to figure out which ones are worth spending your money on. We had professional hairstylists in the lab as well as our testers evaluate each tool at home, based on its ease of use, clamp tension (if applicable), performance, overall look, and value. And ahead, we’re sharing which ones impressed us the most. With curling irons for thick hair and fine hair, budget-friendly picks, and more, we’ve got you covered.

  • What To Look For

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, hot tools pro artist digital curling iron.

Comes in four different barrel sizes

Digital temperature dial is easy to maneuver

Automatic shut-off

Lightweight

Creates lasting curls

Great for types 3 and 4 hair

Some online reviews say the tool stops working fairly quickly

Material: Ceramic-titanium-finish | Temperature Range: 265-455 degrees | Barrel Size: .75, 1, 1.25, 1.5 inches

The best curling irons are easy to use, ergonomic, and create beautiful results—and this one checks each box and more. It comes in four versions with different barrel sizes that each create a different curled effect, and it works to create smooth, long-lasting curls. The clamp is neither too loose nor too tight, meaning it’s easy to work with, and we found that the tool is compatible with all hair types , though it works particularly well to smooth and style hair types three and four. It even performed better than our previous Best Overall, the Hot Tools Professional 24K Gold Curling Iron.

As for features that add to the value, we were really impressed with the digital temperature dial that’s simple to use and makes seeing what temperature you have the iron on easy. The barrel is pretty long which is great for those with long hair, plus, the tool is lightweight and has a soft-touch finish that prevents it from slipping out of your hands. Lastly, it has an automatic shut-off, so you’ll never have to panic if you think you left it on. Considering the relatively affordable price, the sleek and functional design, how user-friendly is, and the beautiful results it creates, this curling iron is Byrdie-approved .

Who It’s For

This curling iron can be used on all hair types but we found it worked particularly well on types three and four. The long barrel is also ideal for longer lengths.

Best Budget

Conair infinitipro digital curling iron.

Auto shut-off

Multiple heat settings

Detachable clamp

Digital temperature display

Not ideal for type 4 hair

Doesn’t create long-lasting curls

Material: Tourmaline ceramic | Temperature Range: 310-400 degrees | Barrel Size: 1, 1.25, .75-1.25 inches

Hairstyling tools can be expensive, but good ones don’t have to be. This pick is affordable and accessible at most drugstores, and we were really impressed by it during our testing process . It comes in multiple sizes, has a digital temperature display with five heat settings, and has an automatic shut-off feature. Perhaps the coolest thing about it is that it comes with a detachable clamp so that you can use it as a traditional curling iron or a wand . This feature is great if you’re a beginner because it allows you to experiment and see which way of styling is most comfortable for you.

In terms of the results, we found that this tool worked for most hair types with the exception of type four hair . Because it only goes up to 400 degrees, it wasn’t hot enough to properly style this type of hair. As for thinner and medium hair types, it worked to create smooth curls, though the definition faded pretty quickly, leaving behind more loose waves than true curls . So while this curling iron isn’t ideal for everyone, it is a great option for a lot of people who are looking for a versatile tool at a really affordable price.

This curling iron can be used on most hair types but we didn’t love it for type 4 hair.

Byrdie / Gabby Rello Duffy

Best Splurge

Dyson airwrap.

Comes with a variety of attachments

Multiple heat and airflow settings

Intuitive and easy to use

Creates bouncy, voluminous look

Not ideal for tight, defined curls

Curls don’t last long

Material: Nylon | Temperature Range: Up to 302 degrees | Barrel Size: 1.2, 1.6 inches

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the Dyson Airwrap is a fantastic tool—that is if you have the proper expectations. While not a traditional curling iron that can give you tight or ultra-defined curls, this versatile tool is excellent if you want to create a wide range of styles , loose curls or waves included. It comes with multiple attachments, two of them being curling barrels that use heat and powerful airflow to create curls. As a rotating curling iron , it also winds your hair up the barrels. We love how intuitive and easy to use this tool is—it practically does the work for you . It also features multiple heat and airflow settings as well as a cool shot, ensuring that you can find the right temperature and pressure for your hair type.

Throughout our extensive testing of this tool, we’ve found that the initially defined curls it creates almost always fall significantly within a couple of hours, but what you’re left with is anything from a loose curl to a bouncy blowout look. If you’re looking for a do-it-all tool that helps you achieve a wide range of styles, we definitely recommend checking out this game-changing tool from Dyson.

This luxury hair tool can be used on all hair types but works best on longer lengths.

Byrdie / Jessica Juliao

Best for Thick Hair

T3 switch kit curl trio.

Comes with three interchangeable wands

Clamp is secure but not too tight

Smooth ceramic allows hair to glide easily

9 heat settings

Has automatic shut-off

Creates long-lasting curls

Hottest setting can easily burn hair

Material: Ceramic | Temperature Range: 260-410 degrees | Barrel Size: .5, 1.25, 1.5 inches

If you’re looking to create a variety of curls, this tool that comes with three different-sized barrels is perfect for you. Two of the barrels are actually clamp-less wands, and the one-and-a-half-inch barrel has a clamp that’s easy to use. The smallest barrel creates tight curls, the medium one creates looser but still-defined curls, and the largest barrel creates loose waves. Each barrel is made with a super smooth ceramic that allows the hair to glide effortlessly without creasing or getting stuck, and we love that they all create long-lasting curls. We also love that there are nine different heat settings, giving you the opportunity to find the ideal temperature for your unique hair. It also heats up quickly and features an automatic shut-off, nice features to have which elevate the user experience. If you’re looking for a truly high-quality tool that will offer you versatility, this one is worth the investment.

Due to the different barrel sizes and heat settings, this curling iron can be used on all hair types.

Byrdie / Alyssa Grabinski

Best for Fine Hair

Tymo cues curling iron.

Comes with 3 interchangeable barrels

Features 5 heat settings

Clamps are smooth and don’t tug hair

Automatic shut-off

Clamp could hold hair more securely

Material: Ceramic coating | Temperature Range: 280-430 | Barrel Size: .5, 1, 1.5

Not every hair tool works the same for every hair type, so it’s important to find one that’s fitting for you. To put it simply, we much prefer this one for fine hair than thick or coily hair —we didn’t find that it created lasting curls on the latter hair textures. However, when we tested it on fine and thin hair, we got much better results. The curls looked smooth and defined, and they lasted nicely for almost two full days.

We love that this relatively affordable tool comes with three barrels of different sizes, providing you with versatility and the option to truly customize your curls. It also features five heat settings, has an automatic shut-off, and a wide range of temperatures. If you have fine hair and you’re looking for a curling iron that gives you options—at a fair price point—we recommend this one for you.

While this can be used on all hair types, testing showed us that you’ll get best results with this curling iron if you have fine hair.

Byrdie / Emma Phelps

Best for Long Hair

Bio ionic long barrel curling iron.

6 heat settings

Clamp holds hair securely but not too tight

Not ideal for those looking for tight curls

Material: Ceramic | Temperature Range: Up to 430 degrees | Barrel Size: 1, 1.25, 1.5 inches

Those with long hair know the struggle of trying to fit the entire length of your strands onto a standard curling iron—it’s awkward and it often creates funky-looking results. We were so impressed by this tool that’s two inches longer than the average curling iron because it makes wrapping your hair around the barrel in one shot super easy. It features a clamp that secures the hair just right without creating unflattering creases, and it also has six heat settings to suit different hair types. During our test, we found that this tool created long-lasting curls best for longer hair. Not to rule it out for shorter to medium-length hair , but for our testers who didn’t have longer strands, they reported the barrel was a pretty big adjustment and that it felt tricky to maneuver. Though it wasn’t ideal for creating tight or ultra-defined curls—it’s better for a looser, more beachy look. And despite the wand being significantly longer than the average curling iron, it remains lightweight. If you’ve got long hair and you find that standard curling irons aren’t ideal for your lengths, we highly suggest checking this one out.  Heating up this iron does take up to three minutes, but the auto shut-off, which goes into effect after one hour as the brand claims, is a saving grace for those of us who rush to get ready and have a tendency to forget whether we’ve turned off our hot tools.

This can be used on all hair types but our research showed it works best on longer hair.

Best for Tight Curls

Babylisspro nano titanium curling iron.

Clamp holds hair in place without being too tight

Adjustable temperature settings

Long swivel chord

Affordable

Hard to get precise heat settings on the temperature dial

Not ideal for long hair

Material: Titanium, ceramic/coated | Temperature Range: 250-450 degrees | Barrel Size: .75, 1, 1.25, 1.5

If you’re looking for a curling iron that will help you achieve tight, defined curls, the three-quarters-of-an-inch model from Babyliss is a great option. Though it doesn’t have fancy features like a digital temperature display or automatic shut-off, it’s a functional iron that gets the job done at an affordable cost. The clamp is secure which helps you maintain control, but it’s not so tight that it tugs at the hair. It also offers multiple heat settings which you can adjust with the temperature dial, though it’s a bit tricky to select a precise temperature. Titanium irons heat up fast and help retain moisture, preventing hair from becoming dry or brittle. The heat-up time on this iron wasn’t jaw-dropping (at just over two minutes), but its ease of use certainly was. It is very easy to use and maneuver, extremely lightweight, and allows for a lot of flexibility and different ways to curl the hair. It creates really beautiful, smooth curls that last pretty well— those with thin to medium hair saw the most long-lasting results. If we could change anything about it, it would be the length of the barrel (it’s a bit too short for long hair), but considering how effective it is, how easy to use it is, and its affordability, we definitely recommend it for those looking to create tight curls.

Byrdie / Rachel Marek

Best for Beginners

Ghd 1-inch curling iron.

Maintains 365°F across entire barrel to keep temperature safe for each strand

Clamp is secure but not too tight

Heats up very quickly

Cooling tip could be larger for better gripping without burning

Doesn’t have adjustable temperature settings

Material: Ceramic coating | Temperature Range: 365 degrees | Barrel Size: 1 inch

A curling iron with tons of bells and whistles can be intimidating, especially if you’re a beginner—that’s why we love that this one is simple. It utilizes the brand’s patented technology that detects each strand of hair and ensures that the iron maintains a temperature of 365 degrees, which they say is safe for most hair types. Though we do enjoy the customizability that comes along with having multiple heat settings, having just one that’s suitable for a wide range of hair types is great when you’re a beginner because it eliminates the guesswork. We also love how lightweight this tool is, the fact that it heats up in a matter of seconds, and that the clamp is secure yet still easy to open and close. Plus, it creates beautiful curls that fall somewhere in between loose and defined—and they last all day . If you’re looking for an intuitive curling iron that’s high-quality and beginner-friendly, this is the one for you.

This curling iron uses patented temperature technology which ensures it’s safe to use on all hair types.

Best for Heat Protection

Instyler cerasilk curling iron.

Multiple temperature settings

Features a cool-touch grip to clamp hair instead of traditional clamp

Doesn’t get quite hot enough to create super-defined results

Material: Woven ceramic | Temperature Range: 300-400 degrees | Barrel Size: 1 inch

If you have fine or damaged hair, or you’re concerned about damaging your hair, we recommend checking out this curling wand that claims to limit and prevent it. The barrel is wrapped in a woven ceramic coating which blocks the hair from directly touching the hot plates, leading to less direct heat and damage. It features a range of temperatures that suit different hair types, though we found that it doesn’t feel overly hot, even on the highest setting. This is a great thing for people with fine to medium hair, but it does mean that it’s not the most effective for type four strands because this hair type requires higher temperatures when styling.

Aside from the heat-protecting feature, we really like that it’s a wand-style iron with a cool-touch silicone grip that you can use to secure the ends of the hair to guide you as you style it . Though not necessary, this little feature can be useful, especially for beginners. It also has an automatic shut-off feature, and most importantly, it works to create smooth, lasting curls.

We found that this curling iron is best for fine to medium hair that doesn’t require super-hot temperatures to hold a curl.

What to Look for in Curling Irons

  • Barrel Size : “Finding the right curling iron and barrel size that works for you all depends on what look you’re going for,” says celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos. He explains that if you’re going for a looser, more relaxed-looking curl, a larger barrel size is best. If you’re trying to create tight curls, a smaller iron, like the Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium Spring Curling Iron is ideal. Celebrity hairstylist, Kim Kimble, also adds that thinner barrels work best for short hair , while thicker barrels are great if you have long hair.
  • Material : Curling irons are typically made with ceramic, titanium, or tourmaline material—sometimes they even feature a combination. “Ceramic plates are gentle, [they use] a smooth silky surface which allows the hair to glide without snagging or pulling, resulting in minimal damage while providing even heat distribution,” Kimble explains. Giannetos is a fan of this material, saying “They are my favorite because they keep the hair protected from daily heat.” Kimble says that “titanium plates are more durable and provide the best heat conduction, which gives curls more longevity,” however, this increased heat can also cause more damage to fragile hair if not properly managed. Giannetos adds that titanium curling irons are great for people with thick or naturally curly hair because of their high-temperature settings. The Hot Tools Black Gold Digital Salon Curling Iron is a great choice because it has a ceramic-titanium finish. "With tourmaline plates, the smooth glide minimizes breakage and produces negative ions, which keep moisture and gloss in place,” Kimble says. “The tourmaline iron is suitable for all hair types, whether fine or dense, but it will work especially well for people with fine hair.”
  • Temperature Settings : Different hair types and textures require different ideal curling temperatures— thin and fine hair can’t tolerate temperatures as high as thick hair can, meaning that finding an iron that has a range is ideal. According to Kimble, fine hair should be using curling irons at 250-275 degrees Fahrenheit, between 300-330 degrees is ideal for medium hair, and thick hair can handle between 300-385 degrees. The Hot Tools Black Gold Digital Salon Curling Iron has an impressive temperature range that goes from 265-455 degrees.
  • Built in Safety Stand : Having a bevel built-in to your curling iron for the ease of putting it down on your counter between sections is crucial. This small feature will prevent any accidental burns to your countertop and keep the hot barrel lifted above other items that could catch fire.
  • Swivel cord : A cord that swivels will allow your curling iron to move with ease as you style your strands and avoid getting tangled up or crowding your view as you go.
  • Clamp : Finding the right clamp is an important factor that considers your hair type. A clamp that’s too tight may pull on or even crease finer hair that’s quicker to react to heat and tension. Thicker hair types may need a clamp with more tension to keep the hair from slipping out of the iron. The right clamp tension can offer a smoother glide and curl finish.
  • Hair Type : For best results, select the curling iron best suited for your hair and curl type. In order to determine your curl type —there are different types of curls—from 2a to 4c—you'll have to explore characteristics and traits of your hair. We love curling irons made with titanium for most curl types, like the Hot Tools Black Gold Digital Salon Curling Iron, which has a ceramic-titanium finish.

It’s far from uncommon to curl your hair and be thrilled with the results only to look in the mirror a few hours later and see that your curls have fallen significantly. It can be tricky to ensure that they last all day and night, but both Kimble and Giannetos recommend setting your curls with hairspray to improve their longevity. Kimble also recommends pinning them up as they cool and set which will help to extend their life.

If you’re struggling to master creating curls with an iron that has a clamp, Kimble gave Byrdie a brief breakdown. “Start by holding the curling iron vertically with the clasp facing forward,” she says. “Then, clamp a 1-2 inch section of hair about 1-2 inches from the ends. Curl the hair out and away from your face, all the way up to the root. Hold for 7-12 seconds depending on your hair texture.” Giannetos says that if you’re looking to achieve a loose, lived-in finish, keep the roots and ends of the hair out of the curling iron and position it away from the face.

“If there’s a lot of product in the hair, that gets on the iron,” says Providence. “If you don’t clean it off pretty much right away, it can get baked on and become impossible to clean.” Providence offers two cleaning solutions: She uses a professional grade all-purpose cleaner called Ship Shape , “or I use straight 71% alcohol on a microfiber [cloth], and clean the iron while it’s warm but not hot.”

This depends upon the desired result. To enhance natural texture, you want to select a barrel size that’s as close to the shape of your waves or curls. To sculpt the hair, a 1” iron is a safe bet for creating glam waves, or for offering a tighter hold to finer hair types. For looser waves or curls, 1.25” is a great place to start for providing a shape that isn’t too tight, but not so loose that it will fall flat.

According to Providence, starting at a medium-low heat setting is a safe place to begin to gently encourage the hair into its new shape. Finer hair types may experience exposure to damage at higher temperatures, whereas thicker hair types may be more resistant to heat and need to go in at the highest temperature available. Regardless, easing into the right temperature and using a heat protectant beforehand will help give your strands an added boost of protection.

Amazon Shoppers 'Love' This TikTok-Viral Hair Curler That's Similar to the Dyson Airwrap and a Fraction of the Price

  • Author: Carly Kulzer

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

I previously discovered the Tymo Hair Straightener Brush on TikTok and was thoroughly impressed by its innovative design, ease of use, and astonishing results that so many people raved about. So imagine my immense joy when I found out the brand makes other efficient hair tools.

Tymo Curlgo Cordless Curling Iron a whirl, and right now, Amazon is offering a secret $10 coupon that drops the price down to just $90. This tool truly is worth every penny, considering it's portable and practically does all the work for you. It can be used as a cordless device that's perfect when on the go or it can be used while it's plugged in and charging.

One five-star reviewer said that they returned their $600 Dyson Airwrap to buy this $90 curler instead and said, "The curls are amazing and hold nicely."

I have used the same curling wand for well over 10 years and never thought I'd stray away from it — until now. The numerous TikTok videos showcasing how well it works had me sold, and after using it for myself, I'm amazed by its effortless efficiency. Like the Amazon reviewer, I'm ditching my tried and true hair curler for the Tymo Curlgo because of its unique design that makes styling my long, thick hair faster and easier than ever, cutting my styling time in half.

All I have to do is section off my hair, select my preferred rotation direction and temperature, press the rotate button, and it automatically wraps my hair around its 1-inch barrel. It'll beep after eight seconds letting me know it's time to release my locks and unveil the perfect curl. Unlike other automatic curlers, this one has several safety features that don't make me worried that it's going to rip my hair out.

If it senses a knot or tangle, it immediately unwraps your hair and the hot barrel is covered by two protective layers to avoid accidental burns. Plus, it's super easy to release your hair at any time.

Rostov Veliky

Rostov Veliky is one of the oldest Russian cities, which was mentioned in the ancient chronicles of the IX century as the city, which had been existed on the shores of Nero Lake for a long time before. At the beginning of the XIII century, Rostov became a part of the Rostov principality, sooner one of the most important political, economical and cultural centers of Russia. During the Tatar-Mongol Invasion, the city was almost totally destroyed. At the end of the XV century, the city with surroundings became a part of the Moscow principality, but Rostov continued to be one of the largest religious centers of Russia and so it is today. The majority of architectural monuments were built in the XVI-XVII centuries and preserved till nowadays: the Kremlin, Uspensky Cathedral, and a variety of old monuments and churches attract thousands of visitors from all over the world.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Rostov-on-Don

Rostov-on-don travel guide.

Rostov-on-Don, Russia is a colorful southern merchant city on a port of five seas whose mild climate, rich history and welcoming attitude continue to attract travelers. The city’s impressive collection of monuments associated with the North Caucasus and Don Cossacks, amassed over the past two and a half centuries, continue to testify to the city’s unique role in Russian history.

Rostov-on-Don has many unofficial names, the most common of which is “Rostov-Papa”. Other nicknames include "Gateway of the Caucasus", "Liverpool of Azov", "Rost Angeles" and "City of Merchants". This latter title is particularly significant for Rostov, which is filled with luxurious 19th-century merchant mansions that are practically unrivaled in all of Russia .

Rostov-on-Don served over the centuries as a customs office, a fortress and a port. It was officially founded on December 15, 1749 when a customs office was opened on the Don River by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. Again by order of the empress, in 1761 the office was replaced with a fortress to protect the country’s southern borders. The fort was named in honor of St. Dmitry, Metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl, and in later years its name was shortened to simply “Rostov”. In order not to confuse the city with the already existing Rostov the Great, it was renamed Rostov-on-Don in 1806.

Its favorable location at the intersection of land and river routes allowed for active port trade with many foreign merchants, a factor which led to its rapid growth and development. In the early 20th century, Rostov-on-Don became a major center of international trade in southern Russia and the third most important city in the country in terms of foreign trade turnover. By this time, nearly a hundred enterprises were functioning in Rostov, including factories belonging to Vladikavkaz Railway, a shipbuilding and iron foundry and two tobacco factories.

Today Rostov-on-Don has a population of over one million and is one of southern Russia’s largest metropolises, a comfortable city whose colorful layout makes it attractive to tourists .

Rostov-on-Don Attractions

Rostov-on-Don is replete with outstanding architectural, historical and cultural sights scattered throughout every district of the city. Yet Kirovsky District, the historic city center with the highest concentration of landmarks, remains a favorite among tourists during excursions to Rostov-on-Don.

It was in Kirovsky District that the city was birthed, and even today the neighborhood is reminiscent of the original Fortress of Saint Dmitry of Rostov. Also in Kirovsky District is Monument to Peter the Great and Don State Public Library, as well as many theaters, museums and restaurants. The nearby Rostov Embankment remains a favorite scenic hangout for residents and guests alike.

The prosperous merchants who once competed with one another in the construction of elegant estates left an indelible mark on the cityscape, and a walk along Bolshaya Sadovaya Avenue and Pushkinskaya Street, likened to an open-air merchants’ museum, will take you back to simpler times. Outstanding examples of Tsarist-era architecture on this route include Margarita Chernova’s House, Martyn Brothers House and City Hall, all of which are now protected under the Russian Cultural Heritage Register.

In Leninsky District is Gorky Park, the oldest park in the city, and Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The railway district stretches along the Don, on the bank of which is Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University, the largest of its kind in Russia. The picturesque Kumzhenskaya Grove, a favorite place for Rostovites to relax, is also situated nearby.

In Oktyabrsky District is one of the largest zoos in Russia and Europe, which is home to around five thousand animals. Pervomaisky District attracts with Rostov Sea (Rostovskoye More), an artificial reservoir which provides respite during the warm summer weather in Rostov-on-Don. To the west is Sovetsky District (known locally as Western District), an area famous for its year-round Ice Arena and Church of St. George the Victorious.

Theatergoers will appreciate the playful buildings and varied repertoires of the city’s numerous playhouses. Both Chaliapin and Rachmaninov performed at the opera house, which opened its doors in 1892. The unusual design of Rostov State Musical Theater resembles a white grand piano with an open lid. Gorky Rostov Academic Drama Theater, whose constructivist-style building is reminiscent of the lines of a caterpillar tractor, is rightfully counted among the finest theaters in Russia.

Rostov State Circus, which is more than half a century old, deserves special attention. Unforgettable performances of the legendary magician Igor Kio, famous animal trainer Anatoly Durov and the clowns Nikulin and Karandash have all been staged here over the years. Animal lovers will appreciate Rostov Dolphinarium, where visitors can admire sea animals while becoming familiar with their aquatic environ.

Museum options also abound in Rostov-on-Don. For history buffs, we recommend the Regional Museum of Local Lore, whose halls are filled with exhibits ranging from the Stone Age to modern times. Tour the Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts, located in an old, gated mansion, or fulfill your childhood dream in the Museum of Cosmonautics by sitting in a real capsule from the Soyuz spacecraft. To discover unique exhibitions on the origins and development of the brewing business, look no further than the appropriately named Museum of the History of Brewing.

On the outskirts of the city is Liventsovsky Fortress (also called Donskaya Troy), built by North Caucasian tribes almost 19 thousand years ago. One of the most popular sites near Rostov-on-Don is Paramonovsky Warehouses, located on the banks of the Don. The buildings themselves may be in ruins, but the strangely beautiful pools and waterfalls make for great photos. Fans of author Mikhail Sholokhov can visit his hometown, the village of Veshenskaya, which is located four hours from the city by car.

A visit to Central Market, commonly called Old Bazaar, is a must during your tour to Rostov-on-Don. Vendors will invite you to taste their array of pickles, while on the pleasantly surprising fish row you can purchase salted, fried or stewed varieties of the city’s famous Don fish.

While in this port city, be sure to sample two local dishes: authentic Cossack fish soup, which when cooked over the fire retains a delightfully smoky taste, and crayfish cooked with sour cream and red wine, whose flavors are fit for royalty!

Rostov-on-Don Souvenirs

The most popular souvenirs from Rostov-on-Don are items with Don and Cossack themes, which can be easily found in local markets. The city also offers a range of beautiful ceramics and tableware, a great selection of bedding sets made at the city’s famous sewing factories, various drinks from Rostov distilleries and the ever-popular vodka gift sets.

Urban Soundtracks: Rostov-on-Don According to Motorama

' src=

For reasons unknown to me, Russian music has never broken into the Western consciousness, beyond that brief t.A T.u phase in the 2000’s. Americans just never caught on to the wonder that is Philipp Kirkorov, I suppose. Nonetheless,  Motorama has carved out a small niche for themselves as an underground hit. Maybe this is down to their lyrics being in English, or perhaps it’s the fact that they have a near-perfect capacity to summarize our twisted emotional landscape with their own brand of Post Punk.

Hailing from Rostov, Russia, they were formed outside the Moscow and Saint Petersburg cultural centers, which produce the bulk of the nation’s cultural exports. Known for being a far more rough city, Rostov appears to be the ideal backdrop for Motorama’s amazing capacity to engender emotions, like disappointment and anxiety. However, little writing is produced about the city and it attracts few tourists from outside Russia. As such, we spoke to  Vladislav Parshin from the band, and he kindly put together a bit of a mix to understand the place a bit more.

For most people anything outside of Russia, the country is a complete mystery. How did being from Rostov shape your musical tastes and you guys as artists?

For me the main influence was my father who showed me tons of great music from the Soviet Union and abroad and all these songs formed my tastes. Rostov-on-Don is also an important part of shaping the taste, as I knew personally the members of the New Wave/Post-Punk 90’s bands like Elen  and Matrosskaya Tishina , they influenced me in the beginning of the 2000’s.

It is interesting looking at musical scenes that are outside the centers of arts like Manchester, Seattle, and Louisville. It is as if being removed from the mainstream conversation allows you to produce something completely unique and personal. To a certain degree, do you think that your band was almost blessed to be outside the major cities of mainstream culture?

I won’t say that it was a blessing, but it was fine for us as a band. I think that living outside the big cultural spots is a good chance for creating something by yourself, you have more free time, instead of visiting never ending exhibitions, concerts and parties. But at the same time it’s harder to meet people who share the same ideas and who can help you in what you are doing. In general I feel comfortable living in Rostov-on-Don, we are flying to Moscow and St. Petersburg from time to time only because of the concerts.

The mix is fantastic. It is very Post Punk/synth-inspired. However, it is hardly the most ‘sunshine and rainbows’ mix. You’ve said in other interviews that there is nothing exciting about your home city of Rostov. Does that contribute to the sound of the mix?

I like such music and I think it suits our city.

In many articles, your work has been compared to British post-punk bands but I think it is fair to say that you’re part of a broader Soviet/post-Soviet tradition of bands like Kino. What is it about this darker style of music that continues to attract people across different generations in the former USSR?

I think that there’s a specific side in Russian character that is connected with such dark or sorrowful music. For example, lots of traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia are based on metaphysical stories connected with faith and death. All these existential problems are reflected in different art genres here, not only with music, but also literature.
