Grand Canyon Train
Grand Canyon Railway's train leaves from a train depot in Williams, AZ with its terminus in Grand Canyon National Park. Taking the Grand Canyon train to the park is probably one of the grandest and most fun ways to make an entrance at this Natural Wonder of the World. There are no views of the Grand Canyon from the train during the ride, but you'll be sure to get some of the most breathtaking views the world has to offer once you deboard the train and walk toward the canyon.
The Polar Express 2023
All Aboard! The Polar Express is taking reservations for this winter holiday season! Every winter the Grand Canyon Railway’s Polar Express comes to life on a journey from the nighttime wilderness of Williams, Arizona, to the enchanted beauty of “the North Pole”—where Santa Claus and his reindeer are waiting. Watch your children’s faces light up when the train arrives, decorated with holiday lights, ornaments, and other festive decorations, creating a magical experience.
The Grand Canyon Railway's Polar Express is designed to be an immersive, holiday experience, especially for children. Kids love the pajama-party atmosphere as they are encouraged to wear their pjs, while complimentary hot cocoa and cookies are served. The Polar Express story by Chris Van Allsburg is usually brought to life with onboard storytelling. The train may have performers who act out parts of the story, engaging passengers in the magical tale of a young boy's journey to the North Pole. You can also expect festive singing of Christmas carols with passengers, including children, who are encouraged to join in. One of the highlights of the Polar Express experience is a visit from Santa Claus! He comes aboard the train to greet passengers, take photos, and spread holiday cheer. The train ride goes to the North Pole station, where elves and other enchanting sights outside the train windows can be seen.
TOTAL ROUND-TRIP TIME: Approximately 90 minutes. TICKETS: $98 - $67 Kids (2-15) and $58 -$87 Adults (16+)

Grand Canyon Railway Tours
Few sounds evoke images of the wild west than the wail of a train. After all, it wasn’t the cowboys nor the cavalry that conquered the great western wilderness. It was the locomotive. Thus the reason why a journey aboard the Grand Canyon Railway is an ideal way to explore the area how passengers did during the canyon’s pioneer era.
In operation 364 days a year, the Grand Canyon Railway Tour transports passengers from the historic Williams Depot and to the Grand Canyon Depot, which is the last operating log depot in the United States.
Located in the heart of Grand Canyon National Park’s historic district, near the El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon Depot is situated 200 yards from the edge of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.
The locomotive trip to the canyon covers 65 miles of classic Old West territory, including high desert plains with endless vistas, small arroyos and portions of the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest.
Four classes of service are available:
Coach Class, which features Budd Coach Class, 90-seat streamliner-era coaches named after the famous Budd Manufacturing Company;
First Class, a 42-seat area in the spacious Coconino, Kokopelli, Anasazi or Grand View cars; a 50-seat area in the Colorado River and Buckey O’Neill cars; and a 68-seat area in the Arizona and Bright Angel cars
Deluxe Observation Class, which offers 24-passenger capacity in a unique second-story dome viewing area of the Coconino, Kokopelli or Grand View cars
Luxury Parlor Class, which includes The Chief and Santa Fe, deluxe parlor cars with 41 and 33 seats respectively. The Chief also features an open-air observation platform in the rear.
Trip highlights include a daily Wild West shootout at the 1908 Williams Depot prior to the morning departure and entertainment and live action aboard the train, featuring roaming western singers, as well as the infamous Cataract Creek Gang and the justice of a Grand Canyon Railway Marshal.
The railway’s roots date to 1901, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway completed a branch line from Williams to Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim. The first scheduled train to carry paying passengers of the Grand Canyon Railway arrived from Williams on September 17.
To accommodate travelers, the Santa Fe designed and built the El Tovar Hotel, located just 20 feet from the rim and opened in 1905.
Competition from the automobile forced the Santa Fe to cease operation of the Grand Canyon Railway in 1968. The railway was revived in1988 when the line was bought by a Phoenix couple, Max and Thelma Biegert. They had the railway restores and started operating as a separate company, independent of Santa Fe, a year later.
Xanterra Parks and Resorts bought the railway in 2006. Since the Biegerts relaunched the railway in 1989, it has gained momentum with each passing trip to the canyon. Grand Canyon Railway carries more than 225,000 passengers to the Grand Canyon each year.
During the holiday season, the railway operates The Polar Express™, which brings the classic children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg to life. The journey is a nighttime trip from Williams through the starlit wilderness to the North Pole. Passengers are treated to a special reading of The Polar Express while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies.
At the North Pole, passengers are welcomed by Santa Claus and his reindeer just before Santa boards for the return trip to Williams Depot. On the way back to Williams, Santa makes his way through the train, greeting every child and presenting each one with a special gift – a jingle bell signifying children’s belief in Santa Claus.
Special The Polar Express™ packages, which include The Polar Express™ train trip, one night at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel and dinner and breakfast at the Railway’s restaurant, start at $304 for a family of four (two adults and two children).

Grand Canyon Railway Questions & Answers
Is the 90 minute bus tour that takes place once you get to the canyon worth the price or can you see it all by walking?
Thank you for your question. Both the Grand and Freedom tours take you down Hermit's Road, west of the South Rim's Historic District. In Spring and Summer months, this road is closed to all private traffic and only accessible by either the Park Shuttles or our motorcoaches. This gives our guests access to vista points off the beaten path, away from the more crowded areas of the Park. It is designed to work within the Train's schedule, and leaves you with enough free time to walk around the Historic District. Hope this helps!
Take the tour, you get to some great places in a short time with fantastic photo opportunities, the tour we took had a very entertaining, knowledgeable tour guide. Definitely worth the cost.
Yes it is. They take you around the canyon, explain how the canyon was formed, current theories about the canyon, as well as other interesting tidbits. You also have 3 designated stops along the way, and if your group keeps to the time schedule, you may get a 4th as we did. The real beauty is that you don't have to wait for the shuttle to show up or stand in line for the shuttle. You don't get as much time as you would like, but you are guaranteed to be back on time before the train starts it departure.
Take the bus you no way could you even remotely walk where the bus goes with the short time you are in the canyon. You will see views and get info on the bus you do not see in the Village area. My best photos were from the bus ledges. Havecfin time is short see as much as you can. Walk a bit on the Bright Angel Trail very nice shots from there too.
We took the bus tour, very worth it. Saw places you normally wouldn't get to venture to. Did the package deal. Ate the buffet afterwards (we paid extra for it in Williams, saves $). We stayed for 2 days, so we were also able so walk all over the place. Ate at one of the local restaurant for our evening meal. I'm disabled & it has just snowed, so I just had to be careful where I walked. Free shuttles as well. We took in as much as possible. Well worth it! Can't wait to go back!
There is a free bus service available at the train station to get you anywhere you want to go on the S Rim. You don't need the tour.
The bus tour is part of the rail package. However if you'll stay overnight, you can ride all three of the FREE shuttle bus routes to ALL of the scenic spots along the Canyon. You won't have much time to ride the free shuttle bus if you take the train back to Williams on the same day you ride up. Have fun.
The train ride is nice, however I didn't care much for the bus tour (this is in grand canyon), I think is best to do it on your own. Hope this helps :)
I would not recommend the bus tour. You can see very well from the train drop off area and you have plenty of time to see the canyon from several different points of view and even walk down the trail for a while if you choose. You would see more staying at the edge rather than wasting time on the bus which obviously has to take a road much of which you can not see the canyon from the bus.
Both. The tour extends far more, but there large section you can walk. They have 2 groups. One when you get there and one 90 minutes after. Our trip it was snowing for the tour.
Depends on how comfortable you feel with the time you have allocated to your visit. We paid for the tour and found our guide very informative about what we were seeing at each stop and it’s importance to the development of the Grand Canyon. They also have all the correct answers to questions asked about why one side is 12 feet higher than the other and key facts about traversing to the bottom by walking, mule, or helicopter.
No! I was very disappointed in the Grand Tour. It took us to the Yavapi point & I believe Maricopa point only. When reading reviews, I thought it would take us to exclusive locations not accessible by others. Not true! We could’ve taken the free park bus ourselves right to these 2 locations like the other tourists & walked to other points from there too!
Online said tour guides are available to take your photos- again not true. Our guide stood in the parking lot. He was very monotone when talking too- just said basic facts.
The lunch at Maswick lodge was an awful buffet! You had to wait in line for 3 bus fulls to get through the buffet at the same time. Worse than Stouffers! The food court was not too crowded. We would’ve preferred to eat on our own there!
After the 45 minute lunch we were told we could just walk to the train station or board the bus back so we could get on the train early or wait at the station, another 45 minutes early! I thought we paid to have the bus drive us back? The guide made it seem like he was doing us a favor! Good thing we saw the Hopi house at the top of the hill & walked up there to look at gift shop & go into the El Tovar hotel before getting on the train. Our guide Omar was in a hurry to dump us & rush us away! Google the S. Rim points & get familiar with the shuttles! We paid $187 for 2 adults, 2 kids for this bus tour. I don’t recommend! Save your money!
If you like hiking and rushing you can see slot, but the bus tour is well worth the cost.
Can't answer that one, we didn't take a bus tour. If you like to walk around, then stay where the train drops you off , it's very scenic where you are at, also eating and drinking places too. If you have trouble moving around , take the bus tour, but make sure that they will bring you back in time for to train ride home!
If you have further questions , lets us know, we did enjoy the train ride, when 1st class couch.
We did not take the bus tour, however, it does sound interesting. We found more than enough things to do to fill our three hours between the train arrival and departure. We enjoyed dining, looking at the view and visiting with people in the shops, etc.
Even though we're seniors we perfer to walk when we can. Went up canyon along an interesting path with stone markers of ages to the small museum. It was quite a walk but was good for us. Free bus was available to take us back had we wanted. Miss a lot of the little things when on a bus.
I would have preferred walking or riding a bike but we were with a couple who's wife is handicapped. The bus was perfect for her.

The tour begins with a sixty minute van ride to the Williams Train Depot where you will start your day by watching an Arizona gunfight. You will then board the train for a trip back to the canyon, complete with strolling musicians and cowboys to entertain you. It is an authentic Wild West adventure. The train travels across the wide open Northern Arizona landscape, and you will be overwhelmed by the natural beauty and changing ecosystems. Keep in mind the trip does not offer canyon views. 1950s era diesel locomotives power the train year-round.
The cost for the tour is $65.00 per adult (age 17 and up) and $37.00 per child age 16 and under.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean
To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Grand Canyon Railway Luxury Parlor Class Day Trip to the Grand Canyon
Visit the Grand Canyon Railroad at the Williams, Arizona Railway Depot
Arriving at the Grand Canyon
The train arrives at the historic 1910 Grand Canyon Depot. It is among the three remaining log depots still in operation in the United States. Buildings like the El Tovar Hotel, Hopi House and Bright Angel Lodge salute arriving guests as they pull into the station and disembark from the train. Set unobtrusively among the landscape, Grand Canyon Village gives no hint of the majesty that lay beyond. Guests have over three hours to explore the most distinctive chasm in the world.
Freedom Tour at the Canyon
Once you arrive at the Grand Canyon you may participate in a narrated motor coach rim tour to the most scenic overlooks of the canyon to enhance your visit. Guests are escorted to vistas like Mojave Point, Pima Point, The Abyss and Hermits Rest. The Freedom Tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours and works around the train schedule to maximize your time at the canyon. A Buffet lunch is available at Maswik Lodge for an additional charge.
Coach Class to the Grand Canyon South Rim
Step aboard Grand Canyon Railway for a trip to the Majestic Grand Canyon you’ll never forget. Travel in a classic streamliner-era coach that gets you to the canyon and back with style and grace. Enjoy comfortable bench-style seating in the air-conditioned 1950’s-era passenger cars as the train makes it’s way across the beautiful Northern Arizona countryside. The train offers kaleidoscopic views of the San Francisco Peaks and rolls through valleys adorned in wild flowers, dense pine forest, high desert plains and small canyons.
The excitement begins at the historic 1908 Williams Depot. Before the train departs you can enjoy a wild west shootout featuring the Cataract Creek Gang in an outdoor theater, visit the free railroad museum or browse through the gift shops.
On hearing the train whistle pierce the fresh morning air, passengers board the vintage streamliner to begin their journey. Uniformed coach attendants provide you with white-gloved courtesy and service. Aboard the train, enjoy the tunes of strolling musicians who conduct sing-a-longs, an old west train robbery and the antics of western characters as they recreate train travel as it was in the early 1900’s.
