Whether you’re looking for an alternative to a rolling suitcase or need extra space to hold additional clothing that couldn’t quite fit in your other luggage, we found the ideal solution.

The Open Story 35L Travel Backpack at Target has been shoppers’ go-to bag for trips, including one person who used it as their sole bag for two weeks in Europe since they shared that it “holds a ridiculous amount of stuff.” The often-sold-out style is back in stock in all four colors, and even better, it’s 30 percent off in green and gray.

Open Story 35L Travel Backpack

Unlike classic backpacks with zippered compartments that allow you to pack items in a single main pocket, this version from Open Story opens flat like a suitcase for maximum storage. It features a water-resistant soft exterior, interior mesh compartments, an exterior zip pocket, padded shoulder straps, and a trolley sleeve to slide over your rolling suitcase handle. It can even accommodate laptops up to 17 inches.

If you hate checking a bag at the airport, we hear you. Over two million suitcases get lost by airlines every year, which means that as travelers, it’s essential to plan strategically what to bring with you on your trip. If you’re able to, avoid checking a bag and instead opt for a rolling carry-on and a roomy personal item like this genius backpack .

According to TikTok creator @livswiadek , the spacious bag counts as a personal item on flights, so if you’re hoping to travel by airplane without ever checking a bag, this backpack combined with a rolling carry-on suitcase will be all you need to store outfits, TSA-compliant toiletries, and more. They proceeded to call it “a must-have” after being able to “fit so many outfits” on a recent trip.

Target shoppers swear by the bag, too, including one person who wanted “the make of a suitcase in backpack form.” They were pleased with the backpack for long flights and praised its “easy and quick access” pockets. Another reviewer traveled to Europe with it and said it “held a ton” when used with compression packing cubes. It was “sturdy and held up” well for another traveler during their three-week solo trip to Italy and “carried so much.”

Target’s 'Suitcase In Backpack Form' Travel Bag Is Pure Magic (And It's 20% Off)

Open Story's 35L travel backpack is 20% off right now

The dance between airline carriers and their passengers’ luggage has long been a delicate one. There’s nothing like waltzing up to the check-in counter with a bag that you’ve painstakingly packed to be sub-weight-limit only to find out that it’s not — and getting it to your destination will be an extra $75, please and thank you. Or to arrive at the boarding of a budget airline with your “carry-on” to be confronted with that stingy little box with clearly marked measurements that are sure to fall short of what you planned to bring on the plane.

Frequent fliers have therefore become well accustomed to stuffing as much as possible into as few square inches or liters as physics will allow — and when a bag comes along that appears to offer that Mary Poppins-like ability to stash a shocking amount of stuff, it’s worth noting. And when the bag in question is 20% off for a limited time? Everyone needs to know about it.

Target’s Open Story brand is known for its stylish and genuinely functional travel accessories — we’ve previously written up fan favorites like this suspiciously Away-like hardshell suitcase and the brand’s no-brainer, just-buy-it luggage scale that will save anyone from the aforementioned overweight baggage fees. This generously-sized backpack appears to be the next installment in this march of well-designed essentials, and it has a stunning number of long-winded five-star reviews testifying to its supreme functionality. Overall, it’s earned a 4.7-star reviews across 90 reviews (with 73 of them clocking in at five stars).

The 35-liter capacity bag has a clamshell closure, which opens completely flat, and one exterior zip pocket that opens to reveal a series of slip pockets for small essentials like passports, reading material and the like. The interior reveals two zipper-protected sides that are equipped with every conceivable shape of compartment for keeping clothing, toiletries and more organized with scientific precision, and the rear laptop sleeve holds a machine measuring up to 17 inches. One reviewer below described using packing cubes, but given the bag’s internal structure, we’re not even really sure that’s necessary. The whole shebang can be compressed shut with the help of adjustable exterior closures, and in addition to the padded backpack straps, there’s a side carrying handles and a luggage slip for use with handled rolling luggage.

The interior of the Open Story backpack is ludicrously capacious. (Sorry.)

Not every review is stellar, and some of the poorer reviews offer perspective on the bag’s size, which, at 19.25 inches tall, 13 inches wide and 8 inches deep, is perhaps a hair larger than, say, a traditional banker’s box . For some reviewers, the heft was too much — but this population pales in comparison to the number of customers who happily embraced the bag’s girth and stuffed it full of everything they’d need for trips up to three weeks long (in the instance of the reviewer below who brought it on a solo trip to Italy).

Enough from me, though — take a look at what some of the most informative reviews had to say (it was hard to narrow down) or just scroll all the way to get this magical bag in time for your next trip.

“ Took this as my sole bag for two weeks in Europe and it held out amazing. Fits neatly under the seat in front of me in my flight and holds a ridiculous amount of stuff. Very sturdy zippers and seams. A little uncomfortably on the shoulders when loaded heavy but manageable.” — Lg “ I used this item as a personal item on a Spirit flight. I was a little nervous it would be too big, but I didn’t have any problems! I tried not to overstuff, but of course still did. The straps to condense it smaller definitely helped. I have used it a few times since for weekend trips. All of the different pockets and compartments make it perfect for any small trip.” — Jayme “This worked great for my long flight! I was able to bring some clothes and all my things that I needed for my long flight. The computer pocket and small pocket were great for easy and quick access. I wanted the make of a suitcase in a backpack form and this is it. ” — RebF “ Single Greatest Luggage Purchase. Size is perfect for avoiding carry-on fees for air travel . So many well designed, convenient and supported compartments. Wears like a backpack, stores like a suitcase! Chef’s kiss!” — LFTravels “ I used this for a trip to Europe and it was great! I used compression packing cubes and it held a ton! I love that it still has a protected spot for my laptop and easy-access pockets. It held up really well!” — skb324 “ If you fly Spirit or Frontier then this is definitely a must-buy . I used it for the first time on a Frontier flight last week and just as I expected, I was stopped during the boarding process (along with like 5 other people) because I didn’t pay the extra fee to bring a carry-on bag. Luckily, I was able to squish it down, tighten the straps on the side, and unclip the shoulder straps to make it fit in the little metal bin. At that moment I said to myself “I have to give this thing a 5-star review,” so here I am. Now I’m buying one for my dad and my brother.” — Mia “ I needed a backpack for a 3-week solo trip to Italy and this was amazing. It was so sturdy and held up with all of the travel. It carried so much and the different compartments are super convenient. I love how it opens fully. It was very comfotable to wear and walk around with. I’ve used this bag several times since my trip and it has not disappointed. The ONLY negative thing I can think of is the zipper handles didn’t have a hole thick enough to use miniature locks (for safety while traveling). So we had to use a little creativity to make sure I could “lock” the zippers. That’s literally my only complaint though. I recommend this bag all the time.” — kbskate “Purchased for my bf last minute as he was flying to Vegas for a bachelor party. He didn’t purchase a carry on nor a checked bag and just planned on using a backpack. After packing all of his things I realized it would not fit so I quickly purchased this for pickup! It was awesome! The bag fit everything he needed for 4 days worth of things. He’s also a BIG guy so his things take up a lot of room. All and all it was prefect and spirit airlines had no issues ” — Kat

Here's How a Popular Weekender Bag From Target Held Up as My Personal-Item Carry-On

Published on 12/16/2022 at 6:20 PM

The Open Story Weekender Bag at the airport.

As a new frequent flyer who likes to save money, I'm always searching for the cheapest flights. In most cases, that means traveling on no-frills carriers like Spirit and Frontier or getting basic economy seating. With airfares skyrocketing and airlines charging more for carry-on luggage and checked bags, I've been on a mission to find and test out the top-rated personal-item carry-on bags . Because it's the only bag I can carry that's free of extra costs, my biggest requirement is that it can house all my travel necessities and then some. And it has to fit underneath the seat in front of me. Plus, if it's cute, it's the cherry on top! I came across the Open Story Weekender Bag ($80) at Target, which has a near-five-star rating with plenty of rave reviews. Once I got my hands on it, I had to see for myself why it's a bestseller.

Main Image

What I Like About the Open Story Weekender Bag

The Open Story Weekender Bag is designed to prioritize organization with a durable construction that can endure spills, bumps, and scratches. It has a large-capacity main compartment, which features a padded laptop compartment on one side, two small mesh pockets, a medium-size open pocket, and a zippered pocket on the other side. The exterior has two water bottle pockets on either side, a trolley strap that doubles as an external zippered pocket when not in use, and another zippered pocket on the other side. This zippered pocket is ideal for all your grab-and-go travel essentials like boarding passes, passports, wallets, masks, sanitizers, and more. It has an internal zippered pocket, two medium-size open compartments, a mesh pocket, and smaller slip pockets, plus a key-ring strap. That's a lot of compartments and pockets to keep everything for your travels in a dedicated spot.

The Open Story Weekender Bag packed with travel essentials including sneakers, makeup bag, skin-care kit, and toiletries pouch, a pair of jeans, a sweater, my undergarments, a travel hair dryer, and a straightener, a dress, a jumpsuit, a pair of pajamas,

This bag also has a structured construction, so it can stand up on its own, which made packing my things convenient. I packed a pair of sneakers at the bottom of my bag in a tote bag because there isn't a specific shoe compartment. I also packed my makeup bag, skin-care kit, and toiletries pouch at the bottom of my bag. Then I packed heavier clothing and items in the middle layer, including a pair of jeans, a sweater, my undergarments, a travel hair dryer, and a straightener. I was also able to fit in a dress, a jumpsuit, a pair of pajamas, a pair of leggings, and two tops. I used the padded laptop pocket for my iPad and stored my electronics pouch with chargers and extra headphones in the exterior zip compartment. I also put a handbag, a wallet, a pair of sunglasses, face masks, and hand sanitizers in that compartment. This is clearly way more than I needed for a weekend trip, and I didn't end up using the majority of the clothes I packed. Even then, I still had room for a few snacks and a water bottle.

You can carry this weekender bag by using the top handles or the adjustable crossbody strap. I really appreciated being able to switch between using the top handles and slinging it over my shoulders, especially because it was pretty heavy for me to carry. The detachable padded strap was a must to alleviate discomfort on my shoulders and back.

What's Worth Noting About the Open Story Weekender Bag

I was able to fit enough clothes and options for a four-day trip (even though I only needed clothing for two days), but I probably shouldn't have. Carrying this bag around the airport was not the best experience because of my incessant need to overpack. I highly recommend packing as much as you can carry, especially if this is your only bag and you don't have a carry-on suitcase to rely on. It's best to pack smart and light so you won't feel exhausted from carrying too much weight across terminals and through security. I also wish this bag had a separate shoe compartment for keeping my shoes away from my clothing and for storing other heavy-duty items like hair tools and toiletries.

Because traveling is rough, I purposefully chose black so that any scuff marks or wear and tear aren't noticeable. However, this bag is durable and made with a water-resistant nylon fabric. You can easily clean it with a damp cloth or hand towel.

Who the Open Story Weekender Bag Is Best For

The Open Story Weekender Bag underneath the seat on a domestic flight as a personal-item carry on bag.

The Open Story Weekender Bag is best for those who love to take weekend trips or are frequent flyers. The bag is great for all your travel needs, whether it's a road trip, a redeye flight, or just a simple commute. The dimensions fit most airline requirements for a personal-item bag. I could also slide it both horizontally and vertically underneath the seat in front of me.

Is the Open Story Weekender Bag Worth the Splurge?

If you're in the market for a personal-item carry-on bag that prioritizes organization, this is the bag for you. It has plenty of interior and exterior pockets to keep your necessities in specific zones, so you can easily access and see where your things are.

The Open Story Weekender Bag is one of the more affordable quality weekender bags that can fit underneath the seat of most airlines. Most domestic airlines that charge for a carry-on suitcase charge around $35 one way, or about $80 round trip. This weekender bag costs as much as a checked bag or a carry-on for one round trip. To me, it's worth the one-time investment for a quality personal item that can fit all your weekend trip must haves and save you baggage costs for future trips.

Additional Details:

  • The Open Story Weekender Bag is 12.5 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 10 inches deep.
  • It has an internal capacity of 35 liters. It weighs 3.15 pounds on its own and can hold up to 45 pounds of weight.
  • It has a coated, water-repellent nylon construction.
  • It's available in black and purple-toned taupe.

I Took A Trip Using Target’s New Luggage Line & Ditched My Old Suitcase For Good

For years, I relied on my parents to supply my luggage when traveling. In college, I made the ~very grown up~ decision to treat myself to some discounted suitcases from T.J. Maxx. Fast-forward to 2020, and I’ve amassed quite a few nice bags from luggage brands like Away and Béis, so I feel I’m more than qualified to deliver a Target Open Story luggage review . ICYMI, Target recently launched its very own in-house luggage brand, with everything from suitcases to weekender bags, plus packing cubes, travel wallets, and a few other fun accessories. In the name of a good review, I treated myself to a mini staycation here in New York City, so I could properly give my picks a test-drive. Or a test-pack, if you will.

Out of the brand’s entire 10-piece lineup, I decided to try out the  Commuter Backpack , available in Black and Olive, the  Weekender Bag , available in Black and Taupe, and the star of the show, the  Hardside Carry On Suitcase , available in nine shiny hues, from which I chose the Champagne option. As a former daily commuter from New Jersey into the Big Apple (the struggle was SO real), the Commuter Backpack interested me most of all. I recall having trouble finding the perfect travel bag back then (Goldilocks style, everything was either too big or too small, never just right!), so I really felt like this could be The One.

target open story bags

That said, I know most people will be interested in the suitcase, so let me start there. At $149.99, the Open Story carry-on is a bit more affordable than the offerings of competitor brands Away, Calpak, and Béis, though not nearly as cheap as the under-$50 carry-ons I once scored at my local TJ Maxx. That said, those affordable pieces never quite stood the test of time, and Open Story’s version is, for lack of a better description, sturdy AF — and it comes with a 10-year limited warranty.

Open Story Hardside Carry On Suitcase

The polycarbonate shell feels a little thinner than some of the luggage’s high-end counterparts, but that only made it all the more lightweight, so I had no complaints. As an over-packer, I need my suitcase to be light when empty, so I can load it up worry-free! The suitcase also features a TSA-approved security lock for additional protection, which wins it major bonus points in my book. Personally, I bring all my most important items in my carry on luggage , for fear they might disappear in a “lost checked baggage” fiasco.

target luggage suitcase

The overall aesthetic and quality of the suitcase get an A+ from me, and when it came time to actually packing it, I was just as pleased. I’ll spare you a photo of my stuffed-to-the-brim-for-just-one-weekend packing job, but know that this baby fits a lot more than meets the eye.I love the zipper compartments and pockets for storing the small stuff separately, too!

target open story weekender bag

Open Story Weekender Bag

Moving right along, I was excited to test out the Weekender Bag because I have never come across one that actually fits all the things I need without making me look and feel like a pack mule. Again, I’m an over-packer, and while I like that smaller bags limit me from doing the most, I still want them to accommodate my (perhaps unnecessarily) excessive skincare and makeup products. Plus a curling iron, plus a few pairs of shoes, plus, duh, my clothes!

target luggage weekender

The water-resistant nylon material isn’t just practical, it looks and feels luxe compared to the grubby tote bags of my worn-traveler past. I honestly wanted to take a photo with this thing, whereas I’d normally drop my tote and pose sans-baggage while traveling. It really looked great! The detachable shoulder strap is a must, and the trolley sleeve allows you to easily secure the bag to the handle of your rolling luggage, should you be doubling up for a particularly long trip. Another A for the aesthetic and practicality! Overall, this ended up being my favorite bag of the bunch. It’s big enough for a trip, but low-key enough that I could tote it around the city without feeling like I was carrying ~luggage~.  Highly recommend.

target open story commuter backpack

Open Story Commuter Backpack

Last but not least, let me wax poetic on the Commuter Backpack. As a Fashion Editor, I love a fancy purse, but even I know sometimes you just need something practical. My previous backpack was an oversized black monster that stuck out a full foot from my body and made everyone else standing on the subway hate me, so I especially appreciated this bag’s more narrow design. It’s still wide enough to fit my laptop and DSLR camera  plus a water bottle on the side, but it isn’t the kind of thing that requires me to take up the space of two people on a crowded subway.

target-luggage-backpack

I used this bag while running around town one day, bouncing from meetings to cafés to events, and in addition to my MacBook placed securely in the laptop compartment, I was able to fit everything I needed and more. And yes, that included a full makeup bag, hairbrush, and reading material! And honestly, I could’ve fit plenty more, had I needed to. I decided to keep my wallet in the front exterior pocket for easy access, and while bougie me thought I’d be carrying this baby by the top handle all day, I ended up really loving how cushy the backpack straps were, and I didn’t feel like a grown-up kindergartener with this thing on my back. 10/10, A+, cannot wait to use again.

My final thoughts? Don’t sleep on Open Story, y’all! I know the suitcases aren’t exactly ~inexpensive~, but they’re definitely affordable when you factor in the high level of quality, which definitely stands up to that of the brand’s pricier competitors. If you’ve already got some luggage you love, you don’t need to throw it away just to justify giving Open Story a go — the travel bags are just as great as the suitcases, and I for one know I’ve got two new front-runners for busy days and quick weekend trips. If you’re reading this, get the Weekender! You deserve it! If you’re interested, you can shop the entire Open Story range online and in-stores at Target now.

Downsides include its bulkiness when fully packed, which might be inconvenient for some, and premium build quality with a similarly premium price point. Nevertheless, the Aer Travel Pack 3 is a stylish, functional companion for short-term urban travel or anyone seeking a sleek carry-on.

3. Osprey Aether

The Osprey Aether backpack offers exceptional comfort for hikers and travelers alike.

Its adjustable harness and hip belt make it ideal for long treks – or long security lines at the airport – and its internal frame provides excellent load distribution, reducing strain on the back.

Multiple compartments and pockets aid in organization, and the Aether also includes a hydration sleeve for those carrying a water bladder. This backpack is known for its durability with high-quality materials and craftsmanship, and Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee covers it.

At almost five pounds, its weight may be a drawback for some, as it’s not the lightest option on the list. It’s also relatively expensive compared to other brands. Still, the Aether remains a top choice for avid hikers and travelers seeking a reliable backpack that’s both comfortable and durable.

4. REI Co-op Flash 55 Backpack

The REI Co-op Flash 55 backpack is a versatile and affordable option for budget-conscious travelers.

Standout features include its lightweight design – just three pounds – making it comfortable for extended hikes, the 55-liter capacity that provides ample storage, and numerous pockets for keeping everything organized.

Adjustable shoulder straps and a ventilated back panel offer comfort during long treks. It’s also reasonably priced compared to many competitor options.

Unsurprisingly, for a budget-friendlier backpack, its durability may not match premium brands. Some users also find the frame is less supportive with heavy loads. Despite these drawbacks, the REI Co-op Flash 55 shines as an affordable, lightweight pack that deserves its place on this list of the best  backpacks for travel .

5. Fjällräven Abisko Hike Foldsack

The Fjällräven Abisko Hike Foldsack is a multipurpose, compact daypack for outdoor enthusiasts.

Noteworthy features include its water-resistant G-1000 Eco fabric construction, which ensures longevity and durability. The 15-liter capacity is ideal for day hikes and short urban adventures, with a roll-top closure for easy access and expandability. It’s also super lightweight, making it easier to carry, and the removable foam frame adds support.

However, the smaller size of the foldsack may limit its use for longer trips. Some users may find the minimalist design lacks extra pockets for organization.

Overall, the Fjällräven Abisko Hike Foldsack is a stylish, highly functional daypack for a wide range of  adventures with your friends .

6. Hyperlite Mountain Gear 2400 Southwest Pack

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear 2400 Southwest Pack is a high-performance ultralight backpack designed for serious adventurers.

Its premier features include a waterproof Dyneema Composite Fabric construction. As the name suggests, this makes it highly durable and weather-resistant while remaining lightweight.

With a 40-liter capacity, this backpack is spacious enough for multi-day trips and includes a roll-top closure for easy access. The minimalistic design and robust materials ensure longevity, while adjustable straps enhance comfort on the road.

The premium price tag may deter budget-conscious buyers, and some may miss additional organizational pockets. Nevertheless, this is another of the best backpacks for travelers seeking something lightweight, durable, and suitable for challenging outdoor expeditions.

7. Cotopaxi Allpa 42L

The highly-rated Cotopaxi Allpa 42L backpack stands out with its versatility and stylish, sustainable design.

Noteworthy features include its recycled polyester fabric with a TPU coating for weather resistance, making it suitable for various outdoor activities. The 42-liter capacity offers a useful amount of space for longer trips. And it boasts a clever selection of compartments, including a padded laptop sleeve.

Its harness system and padded waist belt ensure a pleasant carrying experience. The unique, vibrant color schemes make it easy to spot on the luggage carousel.

Downsides? Some travelers may find it somewhat heavy for a carry-on bag with a relatively high price point. All things considered, the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L impresses with its eco-conscious construction and functional design.

8. Gregory Baltoro 75

The Gregory Baltoro 75 backpack is a rugged, top-tier choice for serious backpacking enthusiasts.

Its best features include an adjustable Response A3 suspension system, which offers unparalleled comfort and load support. Its cavernous 75-liter capacity accommodates extended trips and heavy gear, complemented by numerous pockets and access points for efficient organization.

The backpack’s durability and robust materials ensure longevity, while its integrated rain cover adds weather protection.

Its weight and size may be overkill for some hikers/travelers, and it comes with a heavy price tag. Despite these potential drawbacks, the Gregory Baltoro 75 is a comfortable, feature-rich  backpack for anyone tackling extended trips  or tough outdoor expeditions.

9. Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L is a versatile carry-on backpack for urban explorers.

Noteworthy features include a sleek, minimalist design that adheres to airline size restrictions. The 30-liter capacity offers ample space for essentials, with thoughtful organization pockets for tech gadgets and accessories.

It’s comfortable to wear with padded shoulder straps and a ventilated back panel. The backpack’s durable materials ensure longevity, while the hideaway shoulder straps add versatility.

However, the smaller size might not suit longer trips, and the lack of a hip belt could limit comfort for some users with heavier loads. The Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L is a compact, stylish choice for city adventures. Tip: travelers seeking slightly more space could consider the 40-liter version.

10. Osprey Transporter Global Carry-On Travel Backpack

The Osprey Transporter Global Carry-On Travel Backpack is another versatile travel companion with many impressive features.

Its most noteworthy attributes include a durable TPU-coated nylon construction, which offers good weather resistance and longevity. Similarly, the 36-liter capacity adheres to global carry-on size regulations, making it perfect for hassle-free air travel.

The backpack’s comfortable harness system includes a padded hip belt and adjustable shoulder straps for a customized fit. It also offers excellent organization with multiple pockets and a padded laptop sleeve.

The lack of wheels might be a drawback for some travelers, and, like most Osprey packs, it isn’t cheap. This would be a robust, attractive, well-organized, and spacious carry-on for frequent flyers.

11. ULA Circuit Backpack

The ULA Circuit backpack is a favorite among thru-hikers and ultralight backpackers.

Its standout features include a spacious 68-liter capacity, ideal for extended wilderness trips. It also has a comfortable, adjustable suspension system to handle heavy loads.

The rugged Cordura fabric ensures durability, while the numerous external and internal pockets facilitate organization. It has a custom-fit option, allowing buyers to tailor the pack to their needs.

On the downside, its three-pound weight may be considered “heavy” in the ultralight community. Some users also find the lack of frame uncomfortable with heavy loads. Nevertheless, the ULA Circuit is a hardwearing, customizable backpack for anyone serious about long-distance treks.

12. Kelty Redwing Tactical Backpack

The Kelty Redwing Tactile backpack is affordable and versatile for outdoor enthusiasts.

Notable features include a rugged 500D Kodra fabric construction, offering both durability and water resistance. Its 45-liter capacity provides ample space for gear, complete with multiple pockets and organization options.

The U-shaped zipper provides easy access to the main compartment, while the padded shoulder straps and ventilated back panel enhance comfort during extended use.

However, some users may find the tactical aesthetics less appealing for urban settings. And the absence of a dedicated laptop compartment could be another drawback for city travelers. Yet its popularity as a well-built, robust pack is undeniable.

These Diaper Bags Are Also Great Backpacks

Collage of 3 backpack photos all on jean fabric background and each with yellow frame. Small black backpack on top left...

My least favorite thing about diaper bags is how massive they are. Do I really need a bag that makes me look like a hobbit wearing Aragorn's backpack? Not that Aragorn wears one. (Real men carry man purses .) It would cramp his style, the same way most diaper bags cramp mine.

The price point is also insane. Diaper bags can retail for over $200, which just feels bonkers for a bag that you'll only need for a certain stage of your kid's life. Maybe you want multiple children and hope that you'll like it enough to use for several years, but even that felt a lot like planned obsolescence.

Originally, I simply set out to find diaper bags that I thought both my husband and I would enjoy using. I ended up finding a few fantastic diaper bags that we'd not only be happy to wear around town, but that I would even take places without my kid. That's a bag worth investing in. (Incidentally, we also have a few other backpacks worth considering if these don't work out for you.)

A Good Laptop Backpack

Photograph: Nena Farrell

7AM Enfant's puffy diaper backpack has become the house go-to diaper bag. It's the size of an average backpack but has a small front pocket with two mesh compartments that's perfect for stashing diapers and wipes. Inside, each side is lined with low pockets perfect for kid snacks, bottles, or more diapers and wipes. Most importantly, there's a laptop-sized pocket where you'll find the included changing pad stored (so you'll want to sanitize that pocket before putting your laptop in there!). It's plenty big enough for several diapers, lots of snacks, a change of clothes, and a myriad of toys, while also fitting everyone's water bottles.

That small front pocket could easily be used instead for something like power cords and lip balm instead of diapers and wipes, though, and the built-in laptop sleeve makes it a great potential work or travel bag. There's a pass-through on the back to slide it onto suitcase handlebars too. It's honestly a great-looking bag, and my husband jokes that it matches his black puffer jacket. The only downside is that the outside drink pockets are really only meant for kid-sized bottles, but the inside drink pockets easily fit my 40-ounce water bottle .

A Mini Backpack

Smooth black backpack with small handle sitting on brown surface in front of off-white wall

Calpak recently launched an entire new line of diaper bags, and the Convertible Mini Diaper Backpack has become my latest favorite diaper bag. It's a nice size increase over my previous favorite bag, the Beis Diaper Pack ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ), now that my kid is a little older and needs more snacks and larger toys while we're on the go. It has low pockets lining the interior for diapers, wipes, and snacks, plus a tall, thin front pocket I like to use for my wallet and keys. There's no included changing pad, though, so you'll need to bring your own.

I like it so much that I have started using this diaper bag for my own solo outings. The main pocket is just big enough to fit a couple of Dungeons & Dragons rule books and my dice bag; it also fits my 11-inch Macbook laptop with a notebook and charger cords. The laptop doesn't have a designated pocket like you'll find in 7AM's bag, but it's been the Goldilocks of bags for me as a not-too-small, not-too-big backpack. It's larger than other popular mini backpacks like you'll find at Loungefly , but it's a nice little size to fit plenty of things. (Except a big water bottle, but that's no surprise with a mini bag.)

An Organized Camera Bag

No Reception Club Getaway Bag with shelves inside

Photograph: No Reception Club

The No Reception Club Getaway Bag ( 6/10, WIRED Recommends ) is a pricey but cool bag. It's designed for travel, but the design reminds me so much of how a camera bag is organized. The adjustable interior shelves mean you can create room for just about anything while still keeping certain items separate. There's a side pocket meant for No Reception Club's diaper hip pack, but I found it easier to just throw a couple diapers and a pack of wipes in there.

It's great for keeping toys, snacks, and extra clothes in their own sections. But you'd also never guess it's a diaper bag from first look, since it's not actually designed for diapers, so much as parents who have lots of flexible, growing needs. Nobody would blink an eye if you used this bag without your kid–that's the whole point of the bag.

A Good Stroller Organizer

Olive green waistbag sitting on brown surface in front of off-white wall

You already know I love a good diaper fanny pack, so it's no surprise that I liked how Colugo's stroller organizer doubled as a hip pack. The organizer is big enough for tons of things, though it isn't designed for diapers; it's more for kiddo drinks, pacifiers, and your phone and wallet. There's little dividers in the inside, made for two baby bottles or toddler water tumblers to stand up in the organizer, plus a small front pocket and mesh large back pocket. The back mesh pocket is where I stuff the large strap when I attach it to the stroller, but it's also big enough to fit a diaper (though not wipes) or a smart phone.

I wore mine all over the San Diego Zoo and was impressed not only by how comfortable it was to wear around my chest, but how much it just looked like a cool fanny pack rather than a stroller organizer. It was easy to attach to the stroller while on the go, too. I could easily use this bag for years to come, and take advantage of those interior compartments for my lip balms and keys instead of toddler drinks.
