Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

I have a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 4.8L 4x4. My cruise control isn't working. The light on the steering wheel controls comes on but the green light does not and the cruise will not engage. I have checked the fuses and all the fuses are still good. All three of my brake lights are working along with my turn signals. I replaced the brake light switch after reading some forums on here. Is there a certain way it is suppose to be installed? I replaced it the same way the other switch was in there. But it still isn't working so I have no idea. I have checked the connector before attaching to the brake light switch and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it or the wires. Can someone please help? I don't really want to take it to the dealership. Thank you in advance! Ricky

Where did you get the replacement switch? I don't trust electrical parts from the big box parts houses. I've had bad parts out of the box from them.

I got the replacement switch from oreilly's auto parts. And I bought it from an in town store instead of oreilly's online in case of damaged parts.

I'd try a factory part......

Ok I try anything. Do you think it could be anything with the steering wheel controls? Like a loose wire on the set button? I have no idea is why I'm asking!

Does anyone have another idea other than a factory part? I'll try and order one tomorrow.

Wish there was more advice I could give, but the factory GM switch just might do the trick. It worked for me as soon as I installed it in my 08 Sierra. Just in case, here's the part number ACDelco D1586H. Good luck.

The same problem plagued me. Tried all the same things, checked the wires and connectors from the brake pedal switch all the way to the throttle body. After replacing the brake pedal switch for the second time and fooling around with the wiring it started working again, but... I have to press the set button very quickly twice in a row for it to work.

Ok thanks guys I'll try the new switch and see if that works!

Ok I got the ac delco switch and got it installed and still no cruise. This is the third switch. Any ideas?

It is time to get a wiring diagram and check the circuit.

Hdjoe

I have the same issue with my 09. I'm assuming it's gonna be a bad switch ...contact or other stupid gm error. Hopefully you find a fix

Had this same problem in another truck of mine. Try pulling back on the brake pedal with your foot before you set the cruise and see if it works. And also if your remote start is still working then it's not the brake pedal switch.

Time to get a multimeter and schematic and start troubleshooting.

I would take the time to pull and check all the fuses inside and under the hood. I had this happen on my 2011 and I can't remember which fuse it was but I never would've thought it was the one I replaced that fixed.

This just started happening to me as well - 2008 Silverado 1500 ltz. light on steering wheel switch illuminates, but no indicator on dash and no cruise.....

Make sure all bulbs are working in the High mount Brake light. [Back of cab] All bulbs have to light for cruise to work. Hope this will fix it. Did on my 05 crew cab.

Found 2 bad bulbs in high mount brake light assy, but now no indicator that shows cruise is on..... weird

The high mount brake is working Right. installed the same type of bulbs. works off the load of the bulbs not light that's way they have to be same type bulb

I replaced my brake light switch with a brand new one from advance auto and had the same issue I started with. Carried it to a friends shop to make sure I wasn't a complete idiot and had actually put it on right, which he confirmed (that it was on right, not that I'm an idiot). Went back and got another switch and it was fixed. My brake lights were staying on though so a brake light switch probably isn't the problem in your case.

have the same problem in 2008 gmc....... both of my high mount bulbs (3rd brakelamp) were burned out. replaced them with bulb # 921 from oreilly auto parts = $5. Cruise still not working, but light on the switch is on. guess I will try a new brakelight switch.

Is there Two switches one for brake light and one for cruise or is it a two in one switch. Try unplugging the switch and see if it works. Remember you'll have to shut of Cruise manually if it works or just put a jumper across the wire plug term.

1 switch for brake light and cruise control

Is there a cruise control light on the dash of a 2000 Silverado 1500 that says when it's on? My CC isn't working either and I have no clue where to even begin troubleshooting it. Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

2000 GMC Sierra: cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

I've only had this truck for about six months and the cruise has never worked. Everything else works perfectly. Is there something simple I can check? My cruise doesn't work at all. I click the little switch on end of my turn signal switch and try to set the speed, but I get nothing. When I turn this switch on, should anything light up on the dash to indicate the cruise has been turned on? I've looked under the hood and both cables are hooked to the throttle. Is there a fuse I can look for on a 2000 GMC Sierra SLE? If not, I worry it is the whole turn signal multi-switch and I'll have to take it in to get serviced. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Longbed

yeah you should get some kind of indication its on when you activate it......checking your fuse box would be a good place to start....

Denaliano

do you have any aftermarket tails or 3rd brake light?

Try jumping the stop lamp swith. Iirc, there are two switches in the switch and if the cc detects an open in the system, it disables the cc. If it's not jumpering it, unplug it. You have to be going over 20 when you test it, so be careful with it unplugged

dkpeppard said: Not installed yet, but I just ordered an LED 3rd brake light and some 'euro' LED taillights. Why do you ask? Click to expand...
Denaliano said: It's a very common issue for cruise to quit working when you install LEDs into your tails or replace your 3rd BL with an LED one. Cruise is tripped off when it detects a lower current draw to the brake light system. LEDs do exactly that. So don't be surprised if you get your cruise working... and then it quits again once you install these LEDs. I believe a resistor is the solution to this, although I am unsure. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/cars/msg020954557068.html Click to expand...

cruise wont work until 25 mph and no light comes on unless it is active (and not just turned on as it is in my girlfriends mailbu). you have to have the slide switch in the middle position and then tap the end button on the turn signal lever, more of a late FYI than anything

cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

guys, the cruise control on my 1990 k-1500 4x4 is not working. ever since i had the truck, the resume/accelerate has never worked, but i could at least set it and cruise, or press the side button to slow down. now nothing works. i checked for a cruise control fuse under the drivers dash fuse panel, but didnt find one, and besides all of those fuses are good anyway. is there a fuse somewhere else maybe under the hood for the cruise control ? or what else should i check ? thanks much guys.

ChevyBoy2009

I believe there are 4 wires coming off the column for the cruise control. With the key on look for one to be hot. If not look for problem towards fuse / conv center. If you got one hot, hit on the cruise and there should be a second hot. If not = bad switch. If now 2 hots there, check brake pedal switch for hot from there. Should be two SW there and on older ones a vac SW. It should be easy to see which is which. Lots of those switches went bad and there was a recall for some while. If all that is good, you have problems with controller, or ecm info, etc. Not a common issue.More than likely you have a bad switch.

The fuse box is what i was referring too and SW means switches...yes use your test light when you check it.Its a pretty simple fix...im pretty positive you have a bad brake switch or cruise control switch.

hmm im not 100% positive how it all works...i would replace that since its only 7 bucks, its worth the shot...maybe someone will chime in and tell us how it actually all works....but i imagine that you should be getting one hot....due you have a sagging brake pedal??...a sagging one will not let your cruise control work...hold the pedal up with your foot and see if it engages

Revredneck

Since it was partially working before, I would say you probably have a bad switch in the stem. You will have to replace the stem (called a turn signal lever). I don't remember the particulars of that model, but sometime around that year, they re-designed the switch so that all you have to do is pull the small cover off the back side of the column (where the stem comes through) and the 4 wire connector is under there. Just unplug the connector and pull the stem straight out. It's that easy IF you have the later design. Otherwise, you have to unplug the 4 wire connector at the base of the column (where it mounts to the dash bracket) and slide out the plastic guide that surrounds the wire going up the column. Tie a fine wire through the hole in the male end of the connector and carefully pull it up and out. The stem just pulls straight out of the column. Tie the wire on to the end of the new wire, and carefully pull it back down and through the base of the column, replace the plastic protector (although many people don't) and plug it back in. It's a 10 minute job, tops. Good Luck and God Bless

thanks for the help Revredneck... this morning i ordered a new new cruise control shut off switch that attaches to the brake pedal, and will try that first. i do see what you are talking about, the column does look like it will come apart in a couple small pieces that seem to be removable on the housing that covers the turn signal. if i do change the cruise / blinker switch its nice to know its pretty easy.. i will let you guys knwo what i find when i put the new switch in....

Sounds good...let us know!:great:

Revredneck said: If you're gonna replace the brake switch, you'll need to adjust it properly. Once you get it installed, press the brake pedal down and pull the small lever on the bottom edge of the switch all the way back. You can see it just under the yoke on the photo below. Release the pedal and you're done. Click to expand...

I guess I need to clarify something here. I am assuming you have an automatic transmission. If not, the other switch illustrated at RockAuto is for the clutch pedal. The cruise switch for the brake pedal is integrated into the stop light switch (pictured).

Ok guys, the cut off switch i got from rockauto did not fix it.... so soon i will order the brake light switch that Rev has suggested and give that a shot. if that dont do it i will just live without cruise control.... it really looks like a real pain to get that brake light switch out...... i cant even tell how it is installed.... screws ? thanks

I am not positive how you get it out, been awhile since ive done one...but when you install the new one there will be a slot that it has to slide into,if you dont it wont set right or work right...ill do some checking to see how it install it.

This may help you determine if its the switch.... http://www.thirdgen.org/cruisecontrolfix

no didnt have to adjust nothing.

UPDATE...... FINALLY. ok guys, i finally got around to digging deeper into fixing my cruise control.... still no luck. i installed my new brake light switch, and let me say, the engineer who designed this style of switch is an absolute fool.( cant say how i actually feel ). it took me 90 minutes to get the old one out and the new one in... what a real pain it was. got it in and got it adjusted..... but it did NOT fix my cruise control problem. i need some more help.... here is what i have as of now.. i checked the 4 wires coming from the cruise control switch it seems to me to be good ? key on=blue wire hot cruise on=green wire hot press set/decelerate=brown wire hot press accelerate=yellow hot. so, all 4 functions on the switch are working, so my problem should not be the switch, correct ? kw70chevy said his problem was the "electro motor cruise control " box under the hood on drivers side firewall. should i try that next ? i took the cover off that box and it all looked new inside. checked the 7 wire plug that press fits onto the box, and all i have is one terminal that is hot when the key is turned on, and another terminal that is hot when i press the "set/decelerate" button. i could not get a terminal to go hot when i pressed the accelerate button, and i didnt check to see if one of the terminals would got hot when i pressed the brake pedal. (i just thought about that). any thoughts on what i should check or try next ? i might hit the local junk yard tomorrow on my way home from work to see if they have a control box that i could try out... thanks for any help guys... i really want my cruise con

update..... i now have my cruise control back to working... it was the cruise control switch afterall. i was checking the 4 wires right after they came out of the switch, when i should have been checking them at the end of the harness.... thats where i found that two of the 4 wires were not good, probably broken somewhere in the middle due to the tilting action of the column over the past 22 years.... autozone wanted $139 and napa wanted $219... i got mine at rockauto for $45.... thanks guys... onto the next project

I was right again!...haha :great:...glad you got it working again!

My cruise control won't work

  • Add to quote

So yesterday I was on my way to the store and I had a half hour drive so I used my cruse control. Then when I was heading home I went to set my cruse and it would t work. I looked at other forums and my brake lights both work. So please send some help my way.

BADLANDER

there's 2 switches. might as well replace both. easy fix

What switches?

I'm sorry I jus got this truck not to long ago. Im use to my little s10

Joe canyon

Is the 3rd brake light working?

:welcome: Your problem could be caused by several things, but the switches are the most common issue. There are two switches mounted to the brake pedal support. One is the Brake Light Switch, the other is the TCC Brake/Cruise Release Switch. The wires for the Brake Light Switch are colored Orange and Light Blue. The wires for the TCC Brake/Cruise Release Switch are colored Pink and Purple. Obviously your problem isn't with the Brake Light Switch. This link shows the switches and their part numbers: BRAKE PEDAL MOUNTING To remove either switch, turn it to the left until it unlocks. To install either switch. hold the brake pedal full aft, towards the steering wheel, push the switch in until it bottoms and turn it to the right to lock it. It is important to hold the brake pedal full aft when installing the switch. Failure to do so can cause brake dragging.

EdwinW42

Need to ask a question, what does the light blue wire on the brake switch control, and what does orange wire control

Mine stopped working when I had a turn signal bulb go out. I was getting the rapid blink due to the outage and my cruise control would not work. I replaced the bulb & the cruise control came back.

My cruise quit working on a trip....turned out to be a burned out brake light bulb. Replaced it and all was well with the cruise. The second time the cruise quit, I ended up jumping the output side of the cruise fuse to the hot on the TCC brake/cruise switch for the brake pedal because that circuit wasn't getting any power. This was after the roof, hood, and front fenders were replaced because of hale damage. I can only speculate that the body shop did something to disrupt the power feed from that circuit through the firewall during those repairs. Hope this helps

Vincent did this fix work? I'll be looking at my lights befor I drive again

Same issue at 165K. I replaced the lights in my 3rd brake light and the brake light switch under the dash right near the brake pedal. After that I’ve had no problems. About $15

2008 2500 cruise control will not work

  • Add to quote

I have a 2008 2500 the cruise control quit working any ideas of what might be the problem?

watching this, my is doing the same thing

just bought an '08, and only complaint i have is small tank and cruise won't work. turns on, but won't engage... one of you old guys help us newbies!!! also - getting turbo back drag pipe any day, and efi tuning happens next week!

Same problem, I have eliminated the brake switch as the problem and have begun tracing wires looking for shorts or breaks. There is a chance that the ECM has an internal fault that will also disable your cruise control.

I've replaced just about everything short of the ECM in trying to fix my cruise....no luck. I've replaced brake switch, stalk on wheel, NSBU.

Duramax Power

Sub'd. My 08 is doing the same thing!

I found on another forum to check your brake lights even the one above the back glass if any of the lights are out the cruise will not work. I checked mine and all lights work. Hope someone can find a fix the long drives suck without cruise control.

Do you have a airdog lift pump on your truck? Sent from my DROIDX using AutoGuide.Com Free App

No bone stock just bought it 2 weeks ago.

I have a raptor lift pump, running off a relay taped into the 10a ignition on fuse under the hood.

bshaffer17

Sub'd. Same thing!

Someone has to have some ideas.

I think my found my problem. My spring on my brake pedal stretched and while I was driving the brake lights would be on. It would shut off my cruise. I replaced the it and now it is working fine.

Come on anyone else have some ideas if not I guess I going to have to take it to the shop. I have tried everything I know.

As someone said previously, check the tail lights. I am not sure about these trucks, but on some older cars, even having the resistance in the circuit out of tolerance can cause cruise to be disabled. So, that meant that rusty tail light sockets could cause it. Again, I am not sure if that is the case here, but it's free to check.

Anyone ever figure this out......???? Mine works intermitant.

lutzjk913

In on this. My cruise control light comes on that's on the wheel but won't set.

May have found it.....Faulty brake light switch.....You can find it on Youtube as well. Light on cruise control switch comes on intermitantly will activate cruise. Switch goes bad causes the cruise to think the brake pedal is activated. Hope it works, Switch is $20 at dealer.

I'll be looking into it. Thanks

jc1843

I replaced the switch on my daughter's 08 Burb and that fixed the cruise.

This happened to me. Replaced the brake switch thing beneath the pedal, still no go. Turns out something had came unhooked in the steering wheel. Just something else to check!

Mines been doing this also.. I replaced the switch with a ac delco and still no luck. Do y'all know if the service air bag light comes will that prevent it from working?? Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

My truck was doing this. A way you can tell if it is the brake switch: Turn on cruise control, pull the brake towards you (backwards) with your foot or hit it (worked for me) while pushing the cruise set. If it sets, Bingo. What usually happens is the spring gets worn out and stuck, hitting them backwards with free them. I had the dealer replace the cruise switch in the brake and mine has been working ever since.

$25 brake switch cured my cruise control problem.

Cruise Control does not work. PROBLEM FOUND

  • Add to quote

My cruise control is not working on my truck. How would I fix the problem. I checked the fuse and it was fine. What else could be the problem? My dad and I believe what ever the problem is also is causing the trailer brake controller problems. Any suggestions what so ever would be great.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please Are your brakes lights working? A bad (or misadjusted) stoplight switch will cause the cruise control to not work.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please My brake lights are working. How would I adjust the stoplight switch or check it for proper placement? What else could cause the cruise not to function? I wonder how hard it would be to replace the brake switch? The switch atleast sounds like it could be the problem with the cruise and the trailer brake unit.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please I don't think it's the brake switch if all of your brake lights are working. Did you check the 3rd brake light also? Any brake light out will cause the cruise not to work. Also, check your fuse for it.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please With advancements in technology over the years, it wouldn't surprise me that they have this issue remedied finally. Used to be, even 1 bulb of a multiple bulb brake light fixture would affect the cruise control. They may have finally sophisticated things to ignore minor changes in voltage.

naskie18 said: I don't know that the truck cares about the CHMSL, though. I'm with you, one of my bulbs in it is out and the cruise works fine....but I wonder if disconnecting the bulbs in the actual tail lenses would affect the cruise or if its only the failure of the brake switch that affects it. Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please I took the truck to a mechanic today and he checked the brake switch and wiring and that problem was crossed off the list. The switch was adjusted correctly, all the wires were connected and all the fuses checked out. He informed me to have a GM computer check out the trucks computer to see if the trucks computer logged a problem. He also mentioned Chrysler had a recall that the clock spring needed replaced when the cruise and horn did not work which confuses me how they are connected. Any ideas at this time are being taken. I have all LED light bulb replacement, would that affect anything? I hooked the trailer up today and when I turned on the emergency flashers my 3rd brake light started flashing which I have never seen before. Thanks everyone so far for suggestions.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please ssgjurista, you said you checked the wiring schematic. What other items could affect the cruise?

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please The cruise control switch itself, even the PCM. http://www.naskie18.com/colorado/schema ... ontrol.pdf I remember a while back members were having an issue with their wipers. One cause was a pinched harness in the steering column going to the turn signal/multi-function lever. Just throwing that out there so you can check into it since the cruise switch wires are in the same harness.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please There are also a series of plugs above and to the left of the brake pedal. I disconnected mine while hunting a wire, and it disabled my cruise control. Check those plugs and make sure all the connections are proper.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please I took the dash panel off the check the wiring. I discovered a purple and green wire with a blue connecting head unhooked but do not see a place for it to plug into. What does it do and where does it go?

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please After sliding backwards pulling a trailer down a hill (Avoided Jack-knifing BARELY) my cruise stopped working. I checked the tail lights and they were out. Grabbed a few fuses and saw no issues so I was quite worried. Went through the owners manual and noticed there is a "STOP" fuse on the far right side hidden between two larger breakers. I pulled that and it was burned. Removed the trailer wires and spare brake light wiring (for the topper) anything that could have caused the short. Replaced the trailer connecter (trailer side), fuse and fired it up and lights worked all the way around and cruise was engaged. With your lights working sounds like this is not the problem but I think there are a lot of fuses and relay's that tie into the cruise control and effect it. Best thing and easiest would just to go fuse by fuse and check any additional wiring. In my case the connector on the trailer broke and bonded a couple wires while the trailer was almost jack-knifed and caused a short. Good luck.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please Here are 2 pictures of the plug. I am going to the shop tomorrow and have the truck checked. I have checked all the basic items (brake switch and adjustment, pulled every fuse in the fuse box, traced the brake unit wires, checked the wires under the dash for wires rubbing or coating removed, all the lights are functioning, replaced the 7 way on the truck and on the trailer I replaced the plug and traced all the wires and connections). My truck occasionally is turning over 2 or 3 times and then starting and resets the clock. If the mechanic finds what the problem is I will let everyone know if I don’t get it fixed tonight which is doubtful. The wire is located just to the left of the brake pedal.

Re: Cruise Control does not work. Suggestions please The problem with the cruise control was the LED lights I installed. I put the stock incadecent lights back in and the brake unit on the trailer works correct and the cruise works. Never thought of the lights because I didn't use cruise until I started traveling which was a while after I installed the LEDs. I feel like an idiot, the simpliest thing I checked last.

I agree with you FrugalRado "I think more problems are created by some mods than they are worth. " I enjoy the picture!

:welcome to C'Fans. Not quite correct. The ECM looks for signals from both of the switches. A defective brake light switch can affect both the operation of the brake lights and the cruise control.

If it's not jumpering it, unplug it. You have to be going over 20 when you test it, so be careful with it unplugged.
