14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

aarp travel for seniors 2023

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Bon Voyage! AARP Members Travel the World

Affordable group rates turn retirees into globetrotters.

A group of people standing outside a Hawaiian plane with banner reading "Aloha! NRTA-AARP Hawaii 1966.

Many retirees wanted to see Europe — but travel was often too costly and the logistics too difficult to navigate — so AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus decided to help turn armchair travelers into savvy tourists. A new group travel plan was developed by the National Retired Teacher's Association (NRTA), the organization Dr. Andrus created in 1947, before founding AARP (NRTA became a division of AARP in 1982). It marked the first time that group tours had been designed for older travelers who weren't wealthy.

Ruth Lana, another early AARP pioneer, remembered the birth of the idea. She said Dr. Andrus and others had been talking about it in Ojai; they wondered, how many members had been out of the United States? Why should they just stay at home?

Then, one day, right before the NRTA Journal was going to press, Lana later recalled, “All of a sudden, someone said, ‘Well, we could do travel. Why don’t we find out how many people would be interested?’ So Dr. Andrus opened the book and took out one little article. And down at the bottom of a page in one of the magazines, in whichever edition it was, is, ‘If you’re interested in travel, write.’ ”

Positive responses prompted Dr. Andrus to launch the travel service in the spring of 1958. Lana took charge of the new program, which was an immediate hit.

Group of people standing outside the Vanderbilt Hotel in New York City.

In the summer of 1958, some 300 members traveled in groups of 25 on ocean liners from New York City to Europe for a whirlwind 45-day tour of the continent. The travel package included all lodging, meals, transportation, escorted tours and assistance with luggage for the entire trip, which included stops in England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco and France. The price? $895.

Map showing various boat stops in Europe.

“Our returning travelers are our best advertisers,” Dr. Andrus wrote a year later, in the  NRTA Journal . “They have enjoyed the facilities provided for them, the care afforded them and the sights, which but for the rates offered, they might not have been able to enjoy.”

Travel remains one of the many benefits of AARP membership, and making travel affordable is a key goal. Travel-related member benefits include discounts on everything from rental cars, restaurants and hotels to cruises, flights and vacation packages. Members can also plan and book their trips on the AARP website, find information on specific destinations and keep up-to-date on travel news and tips at aarp.org/travel .

10 Money-Saving Travel Tips for Seniors

Posted: November 30, 2023 | Last updated: November 30, 2023

<p>Plane travel can be hard on your body at any age—especially when you're traveling long distances. However, people over the age of 60 are likely to be more sensitive to the <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/news-secrets-flying-pilots/">effects of flying</a>, research shows. Not only are older adults more susceptible to <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/tips/frequent-fliers-share-their-tips-dealing-with-jet-lag/">jet lag</a>, but they are also more likely to experience gastrointestinal problems, sleep disturbances, problems with blood sugar, and spikes in blood pressure—all of which can be exacerbated by travel. In particular, what you eat or drink on a flight can contribute to how you fare while flying.</p><p><strong>Megan Lyons</strong>, a certified clinical nutritionist, board-certified holistic nutritionist, and the founder of <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.thelyonsshare.org/">The Lyons' Share Wellness</a>, says that there are many ways that your in-flight food and beverage choices can cause health consequences.</p><p>"The high-pressure cabin can be challenging for your digestive system. So, for very short flights—a couple of hours or less—I recommend not eating anything during the flight and giving your system a chance to rest. It's perfectly fine to pass up on the snack. If you've already had a good meal before the flight, you can wait until you reach your destination to eat again, and that will help your digestive system," she tells <em>Best Life</em>.</p><p>However, for longer flights, you're going to need to eat—which is why it pays to know which foods may put you at risk of a problem. As we age, travel may seem more complicated. However, there are lots of pros to being a senior traveler. Not only can you save big with age-specific discounts, but your schedule is likely more flexible than it was in your younger years. Best Life consulted with a handful of travel experts, who offered travel tips for seniors who want to enjoy and explore the world without breaking the bank.

<a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="http://www.frenchbee.com/"><span>French bee </span></a><span>airline's Head of Sales US & Pacific, Thomas Renault, recommends choosing itineraries that maximize your time within a desirable destination, for example flying redeye or going East to Europe. Choosing itineraries this way allows for a long weekend or shorter trips to save in the air, and spend more on the ground. For example, they offer an outbound flight from Miami to Paris that leaves at 9pm with arrival at ORY the following day at 11:40am. On the way home, it departs from ORY at 2:30pm for arrival at MIA at 6:45pm</span>

1 Select Travel Times Strategically

<p>According to TPG, these changes follow the disbanding of American Airlines' and JetBlue's partnership, known as the Northeast Alliance (NEA). The partnership was put in place in early 2021, but is now unraveling after a federal judge in Boston determined that the agreement <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.npr.org/2023/05/20/1177295597/american-airlines-jetblue-must-end-partnership-judge">reduced competition</a> among airlines, NPR reported in May. The NEA <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://thepointsguy.com/news/northeast-alliance-ending-what-to-know/">officially ended</a> on July 21.</p><p>When it began, the partnership was intended to help both airlines establish more of a presence in New York and Boston, with American and JetBlue working together to "optimize their combined networks," TPG reported. As part of this partnership, American launched the Boston to Louisville and New York to Monterrey routes, which JetBlue didn't offer.</p><p>TPG reported that American has plans to appeal the ruling, but both airlines have already started making changes to their schedules. The outlet also pointed out that two routes in question (Boston-Louisville and New York-Monterrey) "no longer make sense" for American, which is amending its schedule to address the ended partnership and impending transfers of takeoff and landing slots back to JetBlue.</p><p>In the statement to <em>Best Life</em>, American confirmed that it is still in conversation with JetBlue. "We continue to work with JetBlue and through the legal process for an orderly transition of slots related to the NEA," the spokesperson said.</p><p>Read the original article on <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/american-cutting-flights-5-major-cities-news"><em>Best Life</em></a>.</p>

2 Consider Basic Fares with Add Ons

<span>Also, consider traveling to regions beyond the most expensive cities – especially if you have already been to them. "Paris is not the only destination in France, so beat the crowds by heading to regions beyond the City of Light and opt for a home rental instead of the five-star chateau," he says. "By booking </span><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://us.frenchbee.com/en/train-air-service"><span>air+train tickets</span></a><span> together, senior travelers will benefit from a discounted rate and have guarantees on travel in case of delays or cancellations."</span>

3 Travel Outside of Popular Cities

<span>If you are retired and have flexibility with your travel plans, consider giving your seat up on a full flight. "When they ask for volunteers, the sky's the limit on what an airline might offer you (generally a voucher and possibly a confirmed upgrade), but that will depend significantly on the timing and route," says </span><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/davegrossman/"><span>Dave Grossman</span></a><span>, an expert in both maximizing earning and spending miles and points. For example, if the airline can accommodate everyone they need to be bumped on a flight within a few hours, they will get volunteers at a relatively low cost (maybe a few hundred dollars worth of airline vouchers). If it's the last flight out the night before Thanksgiving and no alternate would get people out in time for Thanksgiving, the offers will be significantly higher. "So, like any negotiation, you need to figure out your leverage before volunteering. We had a member of the MilesTalk Facebook group get a voucher of over $20,000 from United a few years ago. It's very rare, but these situations do happen," he says. </span>

4 Give Up Your Seat on Full Flights

<p>ticket flight air plane travel business traveller trip passport traveler airplane passenger journey air ticket booking aircraft boarding concept - stock image</p><p>During the week of Black Friday, you'll probably get tons of emails from airlines and hotel groups touting their upcoming sales. But if you can hold off a few hours, you'll see stronger markdowns.</p><p>"For the biggest discounts on airfare, hotels, and car rentals, check out Travel Deal Tuesday on Nov. 28," says Woroch. "Hopper, a travel tracking site, says they see more offers on this day than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined."</p>

5 Check for Senior Discounts with Airlines

<span>Are you an AARP, AAA, or Costco member? Did you serve in the military? 6 Get an AARP Membership

<span>"Signing up for AARP scores some of the best deals around," says Rex Freiberger, CEO of </span><a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://www.gadgetreview.com/"><span>Gadget Review</span></a><span>. "Being a member with AARP gets you discounts on everything from restaurants to hotel bookings. The discounts through AARP are never less than 10%, but sometimes as much as 30% off."</span>

7 Book Travel Through AARP

<p>Many retirees find that in the absence of work, their sense of purpose and identity becomes murky. When Prihandito sees this in his clients, he says it's usually because they've neglected to make time for self-discovery in their younger years. Without having a firm foundation for who you are and what you like, retirement can be a dizzying and distressing experience as you scramble to figure out what will drive you moving forward.</p><p>"Many of my clients regret not having invested time in getting to know themselves better before retirement," says Prihandito. "Work often defines our identity, and when that disappears, a sense of loss can come up. My advice is to <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/hobbies-you-can-do-from-home/">explore hobbies</a>, interests, and passions before retiring, to build a robust sense of self that goes beyond our professional identity."<p><strong>RELATED: <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/how-to-motivate-yourself-to-stay-active-after-retiring/">8 Motivating Ways to Stay Active After You Retire</a>.</strong></p></p>

8 Travel During the Week or Less Busy Months

<span>When booking hotels, always double check your discount rates, says Grossman. "It may be tempting to assume that an AARP rate is the cheapest, but there may be a AAA rate or even a promotional rate that is cheaper," he says.</span><b>RELATED:</b> <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/walking-10000-steps-alternatives/"><span>2 Alternatives That Are Just As Beneficial as Walking 10,000 Steps</span></a>

9 Double Check Discount Rates

<p><span>So many things can happen that are outside of your control, especially as you age. This is why Grossman suggests paying a little more for refundable rates and fares. "Always make sure your rate is cancelable as the savings from non-cancellable rates almost never outweigh the chance that your plans might change," he says.</span></p>

10 Pay More for Refundable Rates and Fares

aarp travel for seniors 2023

I am older, a bit overweight, but not infirm, and would strongly advise against this. I have seen and used the ladders, they vary a bit by train, and think this could be challenging. But, agree 100% with comment that if you happen to be sharing cabin with younger folks, and especially Russians, they tend be quite understanding and gracious about switching...but if I had a choice to book up front for sure would get a lower berth.

aarp travel for seniors 2023

Are we talking about a 2-berth compartment (SV) or a 4-berth? In a 2 berth the bunks are normally both on the lower level.

Two berth, Deluxe Compartment, on Red Arrow. Online it shows the berths as upper & lower?

Since when? Are you sure sure?

' class=

Climbing up the narrow ladder to the top bunk could be a challenge. Instead of Kransaya Strela, try Grand Express. You can get vert nice two bunk cabins. There are also day trains. The Sapsan is a high speed train - and a bit pricey. There are slower versions of the day train for less money.

I would strongly advise not using the "slower" day trains...they take the same time as the overnight ones - 8 to 8 1/2 hours, and I simply cannot see why a tourist would want to waste valuable daylight hours, as well as be confined to more "seats" vs. a bed. Also, if you are going to take such a long train, go overnight, pay a few more bucks for the cabins mentioned, get a good night's sleep (ONLY if you actually can sleep in trains), and save some money on hotel...

A quarter of U.S. adults over the age of 50 have no retirement savings, according to a new AARP survey — and 70% of people surveyed are worried about prices rising faster than their income. New research from the AARP released Wednesday reveals how a graying America is worrying more and more about how to make ends meet, even as economists and policymakers say the U.S. economy has all but achieved a soft landing after a period of record high inflation. WASHINGTON (AP) — About one-quarter of U.S. adults age 50 and older who are not yet retired say they expect to never retire and 70% are concerned about prices rising faster than their income, an AARP survey finds.

About 1 in 4 have no retirement savings, according to research released Wednesday by the organization that shows how a graying America is worrying more and more about how to make ends meet even as economists and policymakers say the U.S. economy has all but achieved a soft landing after two years of record inflation.

Everyday expenses and housing costs, including rent and mortgage payments, are the biggest reasons why people are unable to save for retirement.

The data will matter this election year as Democratic President Joe Biden and Republican rival Donald Trump are trying to win support from older Americans, who traditionally turn out in high numbers, with their policy proposals.

The AARP's study, based on interviews completed with more than 8,000 people in coordination with the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, finds that one-third of older adults with credit card debt carry a balance of more than $10,000 and 12% have a balance of $20,000 or more. Additionally, 37% are worried about meeting basic living costs such as food and housing.

“Far too many people lack access to retirement savings options and this, coupled with higher prices, is making it increasingly hard for people to choose when to retire,” said Indira Venkateswaran, AARP's senior vice president of research. “Everyday expenses continue to be the top barrier to saving more for retirement, and some older Americans say that they never expect to retire.”

The share of people 50 and older who say they do not expect to retire has remained steady. It was 23% in January 2022 and 24% that July, according to the study, which is conducted twice a year

"We are seeing an expansion of older workers staying in the workforce," said David John, senior strategic policy advisor at the AARP Public Policy Institute. He said this is in part because older workers “don't have sufficient retirement savings. It's a problem and its likely to continue as we go forward.”

Based on the 2022 congressional elections, census data released Tuesday shows that voters 65 and older made up 30.4% of all voters, while Gen Z and millennials accounted for 11.7%.

Biden has tried to court older voters by regularly promoting a $35 price cap on insulin for people on Medicare. He trumpets Medicare’s powers to negotiate directly with drugmakers on the cost of prescription medications.

Trump, in an interview with CNBC in March, indicated he would be open to cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The former president said “there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.”

Karoline Leavitt, press secretary for Trump's campaign, said in a statement to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Trump “will continue to strongly protect Social Security and Medicare in his second term."

In the AARP survey, 33% of respondents 50 and older believe their finances will be better in a year.

A looming issue that will affect Americans' ability to retire is the financial health of Social Security and Medicare.

The latest annual report from the program's trustees says the financial safety nets for millions of older Americans will run short of money to pay full benefits within the next decade.

Medicare, the government-sponsored health insurance that covers 65 million older and disabled people, will be unable to pay full benefits for inpatient hospital visits and nursing home stays by 2031, the report forecast. And just two years later, Social Security will not have enough cash on hand to pay out full benefits to its 66 million retirees.

An AP-NORC poll from March 2023 found that most U.S. adults are opposed to proposals that would cut into Medicare or Social Security benefits, and a majority support raising taxes on the nation’s highest earners to keep Medicare running as is.

How we review life insurance for seniors

Best life insurance for seniors of april 2024.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

The right life insurance policy for you is one that is purchased early, because your need for life insurance grows as you age, as do your premiums. Many retirees start thinking seriously about life insurance to pay for funeral or to help take care of their family. However, even if you're late to purchasing life insurance, you still have options.

Best for customer satisfaction: State Farm

State Farm State Farm Life Insurance

  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. State Farm agents cannot offer alternative options if State Farm is unable to bind a life insurance policy

State Farm is one of the insurance industry's most prominent insurers offering auto, home, and other insurance. Bundling is standard, and agents often quote with multiple discounts. Its term, universal, and whole life insurance products are no exception.

  • Life insurance products include term and permanent life
  • Ranks highly for customer satisfaction

State Farm Life Insurance takes the top spot in JD Power's life insurance customer satisfaction study . JD Power gathers thousands of consumer reviews and gives each insurer a score out of 1,000. State Farm offers a range of insurance products, including auto, life, pet, homeowners, and renters, with multi-policy discounts and other incentives to keep your insurance there.

Some policies exclude seniors over age 65 from applying for the first time. But all life insurance policies are quoted by licensed insurance agents employed by State Farm. Meeting with a State Farm agent allows buyers to communicate goals and needs and answer critical questions agents might have. In addition, qualifying seniors can access limited whole, term, and universal life policies. State Farm is among the companies also offering survivorship universal options. Essentially, spouses can get insured together, and a surviving spouse can continue to make payments and increase the death benefit. Both spouses can also take out loans and other withdrawals against the policy once they meet the requirements.

K of Clewiston, FL, a verified reviewer on ConsumerAffairs , said, "State Farm is the best insurance company out there. They have great Life Insurance Policies to fit your needs…..Also, their prices are the most reasonable out there."

Best for term life insurance: Mutual of Omaha

Mutual of Omaha Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. diverse whole and term life insurance options
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Strong financial ratings and company history
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Wide range of riders to customize plans
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. online applications not available for term applicants
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. May not provide strong investment options for retirement

Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance  remains one of the industry's most stable life insurance companies. Its size allows it to be more flexible in its underwriting for specific populations, including seniors. Regardless of your age, a licensed insurance agent can sort through your options and find one that makes sense.

However, its term life insurance policy stands out for seniors applying for the first time or younger buyers looking to renew term life policies. Term life insurance policies with Mutual of Omaha are renewable for qualifying applicants up to age 94. Of note, not all applicants will qualify to renew policies beyond any age, as approval is based on health history and other factors. Many life insurance policies also require a medical exam. However, Mutual of Omaha stands alone as it does not cut off term life buyers over 65.

One important thing to highlight is Mutual of Omaha's availability to resolve consumer issues, even when it's not the company's fault. For example, Roger of Eagle, AK, originally left a complaint on ConsumerAffairs , and the company promptly responded. He later updated his review, saying, "Thank You Mutual of Omaha! Physicians Mutual Dental has informed me of my mistake. You are a fine company serving the life insurance needs of USA citizens and expats as well."

  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. May require a medical exam
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Buyers looking for more modest policies may not find the most competitive pricing

If you're preparing for a comfortable retirement or looking to build generational wealth, New York Life is one of the strongest options. If you have questions or genuinely want to understand your life insurance options, New York Life agents are among the most qualified professionals in the business.

  • Life insurance provider with policies available across the US

New York Life Insurance  caters to a forward-thinking customer. It offers many robust investment options. So its agents are extensively trained to answer all questions about its policies. Questions could be as simple as what penalties you'll pay to take early withdrawals or loans from your life insurance policy.

Like other retirement planning vehicles, the earlier you start, the better. Premiums will be lower, and you can apply for a large payout. But if you can afford higher premiums at a later age, New York Life still offers comprehensive policies with loans and early withdrawal options to take you into retirement. Riders can also customize its coverage. For example, whole life customers can buy a living benefits rider to withdraw money in the event of a terminal illness. Buyers can also add an accidental death rider until age 70 for an extra death benefit for loved ones. This satisfies borrowers who want stability but like the idea of a higher payout should they die in their prime working years.

New York Life's knowledgeable agents are highlighted by William of Starks, Louisiana, on ConsumerAffairs , saying, "They are willing to help and pay without hassle. They make sure all your needs are met. They check with you often to make sure your policy is up to date. If at anytime there are questions that need addressing they are readily available to help."

Best for end-of-life care: John Hancock

John Hancock John Hancock Life Insurance

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Accelerated death benefits available for policyholders with terminal illnesses
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Term and permanent life insurance options available for seniors
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Life insurance options for applicants with diabetes
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Pricing may be higher than competitors for buyers under 50
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Some policies not available in all 50 states

John Hancock Life Insurance is among many life insurance companies offering an accelerated death benefit, or "living benefits." Even if you don't want to use your life insurance for retirement planning, you have early withdrawal options to keep you comfortable in the event of a terminal illness. Buyers can exercise the rider at any age as long as waiting periods and other terms are met.

If you develop a qualifying condition, John Hancock will pay 50-100% of your qualifying death benefit while you're still alive. However, it caps accelerated death benefit claims at $1 million if you expect to live a year or less. This could help balance costly medical bills and end-of-life costs beyond what social security or disability payments would comfortably cover.

Best for flexibility: USAA

USAA USAA Life Insurance

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Affordable pricing starting with $12/month on some policies
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. May offer coverage to military members other companies won't cover

  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. May focus on death benefits only more than other companies
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. All permanent policies are underwritten and serviced by other companies, not by USAA
  • USAA offers life insurance for the military, veterans, and the public.

USAA Life Insurance  policies are available to Americans from all walks of life, including military and non-military buyers. However, it offers unique whole life coverage to active duty military members beyond the government's equivalent of employer life insurance. USAA policies stick with the buyer wherever they work. With options for active duty military members, USAA is common among veterans with combat-related illnesses and disabilities sustained during deployment. Of course, buyers purchase these policies before the conditions become apparent.

USAA is among the limited life insurance providers still offering coverage with a history of cancer. Of course, not all buyers will qualify, and policy options are limited. Accounting for state laws, USAA life insurance policies may also pay out after a drug overdose (frequency may increase with more daily medications to treat age-related conditions) when other life insurance companies refuse. For seniors looking for a bit of flexibility, USAA could be an ideal option.

Best for universal life: Prudential

Prudential Prudential Life Insurance

Offers aggressive financial plans.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Available in all 50 states (New York residents may have different plans)
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Buyers can withdraw money to pay for nursing home bills due to severe illness or disability
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Knowledgeable agents who can walk you through your options
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Financial returns are limited
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Limited policy options for seniors and other groups who might struggle to find life insurance

The aggressive financial plans offered by Prudential may appeal to many younger buyers and those with a stable income. However, those with lower income or buyers who aren't sure about the financial system may be more hesitant to engage with Prudential. Like many other industry giants, Prudential is working to change this perception.

Prudential Life Insurance  offers survivorship options for life insurance shoppers. Unlike a standard life insurance policy, it covers two people. When one person passes, the policy continues growing as long as the surviving spouse continues making payments. The policy can increase to $65 million with a maximum age of 85. The two insureds cannot have an age gap of more than 25 years.

The PruLife SUL Protector program encompasses multiple categories such as the Preferred Best, Preferred Smoker, and Preferred Non-Tobacco. Universal life insurance policies with Prudential allow loans. So both parties can pull money out of the policy via loans at the cost of the final death benefit.

Best for guaranteed issue: AIG

AIG AIG Life Insurance

Get $250,000 of Term Life Insurance Coverage for as low as $13 per month.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Guaranteed life insurance available for seniors between 50 and 80
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. High financial strength and customer service ratings
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Some policies only have benefits up to $25,000
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. AIG may not offer more extensive death benefits for seniors

AIG Life Insurance cannot deny your application if you fall within the set age limits. That's thanks to guaranteed issue : two words many seniors and even younger applicants aren't used to hearing about life insurance. Seniors aged 50 to 80 enjoy guaranteed coverage with no medical exam, and the application is 100% online.

AIG policies are small, maxing out at $25,000. So this would be appropriate for funeral expenses and/or a small death benefit for surviving family members.

Our life insurance rating methodology looks at a few key factors. To ensure a fair and even playing field for insurance companies and customers, we look at customer satisfaction, financial stability, types of policies offered, average premiums, coverage exclusions, and more. We also factor in recent controversies and ways an insurance company may engage with and improve its community.

Factors such as customer satisfaction and average premiums are equally weighted. However, we are aware not all charitable efforts are recognized, and not all controversies are based on facts, so a company's engagement with its community and recent controversies are considered separately.

See our full methodology for how we rate insurance »

Life insurance could be worth it over 65, especially if you have a spouse and no other plans to cover end-of-life expenses.

The best type of life insurance for seniors will generally be a whole life insurance policy that doesn't expire. Whole life insurance also accrues a cash value over time which you can borrow against or use to pay premiums.

According to AARP, it takes 1-2 months on average for the company to pay out a life insurance policy.

If you are 75 or older and don't have a life insurance policy, it is still worth buying life insurance to cover end-of-life costs, but keep in mind that your options may be more limited (and more expensive) if you wait this long to find a policy.

About 1 in 4 US adults over 50 say they expect to never retire, an AARP study finds

A couple watches the sun set from a park.

WASHINGTON — About one-quarter of US adults over age 50 say they expect to never retire and 70 percent are concerned about prices rising faster than their income, an AARP survey finds.

About 1 in 4 have no retirement savings, according to research released Wednesday by the organization that shows how a graying America is worrying more and more about how to make ends meet even as economists and policymakers say the US economy has all but achieved a soft landing after two years of record inflation.

The AARP's study, based on interviews completed with more than 8,000 people in coordination with the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, finds that one-third of older adults with credit card debt carry a balance of more than $10,000 and 12 percent have a balance of $20,000 or more. Additionally, 37 percent are worried about meeting basic living costs such as food and housing.

The share of people older than 50 who say they do not expect to retire has steadily increased. It was 23 percent in January 2022 and 24 percent that July, according to the study, which is conducted twice a year.

"We are seeing an expansion of older workers staying in the workforce," said David John, senior strategic policy advisor at the AARP Public Policy Institute. He said this is in part because older workers “don't have sufficient retirement savings. It's a problem and its likely to continue as we go forward.”

Based on the 2022 congressional elections, census data released Tuesday shows that voters 65 and older made up 30.4 percent of all voters, while Gen Z and millennials accounted for 11.7 percent.

In the AARP survey, 33 percent of respondents older than 50 believe their finances will be better in a year.

An AP-NORC poll from March 2023 found that most US adults are opposed to proposals that would cut into Medicare or Social Security benefits, and a majority support raising taxes on the nation’s highest earners to keep Medicare running as is.
