17 years ago adidas introduced the world of golf to the now iconic Tour360 golf shoe. With the combination of achievements in the professional and amateur ranks, as well as big commercial success, adidas has now unveiled the Tour360 22 version ($210/£160). 

Finding ways to update a flagship franchise and bringing it into the modern game can be difficult, but adidas sought to do this by going back to the original designs, analysing what made them work, and implementing those ideas into the new model. adidas looked to focus on two areas that would effect all golfers - fit and traction. So how did the shoe perform? We tested a pair out on the course to find out.

I have often struggled to get proper fitting golf shoes because my feet seem to be between a 9.5 and a 10, and sizing differs across brands. However this was not the case here as in a 10 my feet felt comfortable, snug and cocooned. 

This partly comes down to the Feet You Wear last. First introduced in 1996, it mimics the natural shape of the foot and accommodates the movement of the foot in all directions, even throughout the golf swing. I definitely felt the shoe wrapped itself around my foot rather than having a set shoe shape my foot had to adhere to. 

Additionally, adidas has a new Tour360 FIT, which has several design elements -

• Dualstack Midsole – Combination of Boost cushioning with EVA stability frame. This technology is difficult to see but I felt it around the forefoot and the arch of my foot as well. The support here really felt good.
• Geofit Collar Pad – Located on the top of the foot, this piece gently conforms to the individual to provide a more personalized and comfortable fit.
• Insite Sockliner - The sockliner also conforms to each individual foot and its contours, especially in the heel.

I am always slightly apprehensive with wearing new shoes straight out of the box, but these just felt good and I was not concerned about blisters, rubbing or anything of the sort. The only minor complaint was the heel can feel quite stiff but this is part of the point of the design, so the heel feels locked in. This is a tiny negative for me but on that note, and because of the other technology in the shoe, I think these golf shoes would help those players who suffer from plantar fasciitis pain.

Next up is traction and stability. I tried this golf shoe out in dry, damp and wet conditions and overall there was a good amount of grip in all conditions. A model that will no doubt find itself going into our guide on the best spiked golf shoes , the Tour360 22 has cleats directly injected into the base of the shoe which means you won't ever have to worry about losing them. 

This design touch, combined with a variety of spikes and traction elements, really gripped into the ground. During my golf swing I occasionally stand up on my toes which has often meant I slip in wet conditions, but I never felt a lack of trust with these shoes. I also really liked the fact they weren't creating any large marks of indentations on the greens, something that can be a problem during winter golf.

Of course for any model to be considered as one of the best golf shoes on the market, durability is also vitally important. Despite noticing how light the shoes were when I picked them up and tried them on, they still felt sturdy and really well made. I have used golf shoes in the past that have occasionally had the odd bit of questionable stitching or a piece of material is slightly coming away from another, but none of that was true here. Despite my best efforts to be heavy-handed with the shoes, every element was locked in and properly constructed. 

The upper features a premium rich leather which is 100 percent waterproof and you also get a one-year waterproof warranty as well which gives good peace of mind. adidas has also incorporated recycled materials into the design to continue the brand's goal of ending plastic waste. 

The leather upper is easy to clean, as is the outsole, but the Boost technology can be difficult to get spotless which is common on many of the best adidas golf shoes . Additionally because the stripes come away from the core upper part of the shoe, dirt can get behind there so that is something to be aware of. 

A common negative comment I see online about the Tour360 is people asking whether the design has changed enough. I don't really understand that mindset - I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But this new shoe should keep everyone happy because it looks like the traditional Tour360, with design touches that make it look different to past models. 

I was a big fan older Tour360s because of the classic look and three-stripe design, but the new model has found a way of incorporating some modern flourishes that really stand out. I tested the white, blue and orange model and the small splashes of color give a totally unique style. But adidas has not gone too far and the restraint the designers have shown makes these the best looking golf shoes I have ever used. 

The new shoe will be offered in five models: both laced and BOA models for men and women, and a simplified lace model for junior golfers.

Adidas Tour360 22 Performance Review

With a plethora of the world’s best golfers in their stable of PGA Tour players, Adidas has really stepped up their golf shoe game. 

Piggy-backing off of the success of last year’s model, the Adidas Tour360 22 takes dead aim at the top spot in the spiked category.

Spoiler alert: these things hit the mark. 

First Impressions

As someone who’s a big fan of bright colors, I fell in love with these right away. The blues and oranges work perfectly with a clean white upper. 

If these perform anywhere near how good they look, these could easily become my go-to pair. 

I’m in love with the materials. The upper is made from extremely supple leather that’s buttery soft to the touch. And I’m happy to report that the added waterproof coating doesn’t take away from the gorgeous looks or amazing feel. 

But the great materials come with a slight drawback; the Adidas Tour360 22 is not breathable at all. If you’re one of those people that naturally run hot, or if you do a lot of your golfing in warmer climates, you might consider looking in a different direction. 

Some extra ventilation cutouts in the tongue would have been helpful in this regard. But nonetheless, the premium materials felt…premium!

I had high hopes for the Adidas Tour360 22 in the traction department, and these far surpassed the mark.

Generally, I expect the spiked options to provide exceptional grip, especially when compared to spikeless offerings such as the Jordan 1 Low G . These fit the bill perfectly. They feature what Adidas calls SPIKEMORE traction , complete with 6 TPU spikes to ensure maximum grab and grip.

The additional traction nubs (what I’m assuming is the SPIKEMORE) provided great lateral and rotational grip and served as a great compliment to the claw-like spikes. 

Is Boost still life? 

The dual-stacked Boost midsole on the Adidas Tour360 22 offered great step-in comfort, without feeling overly bouncy or plush. Whether I was making explosive or finesse moves, these felt awesome. Admittedly, I was worried that the Boost would cave a little too much when shifting my weight through the swing, but I had no issues at all. 

In my opinion, too much cushion can be a bad thing in a sport that relies on generating power with the lower body, but the Adidas Tour360 22 implemented the Boost perfectly. Adidas found a perfect balance between energy return, comfort, and stability that make these an excellent option for the walker or the rider. 

Speaking of stability…

The combination of the great traction and excellent cushion made these a very stable shoe overall. I found these to be less narrow than a shoe like the Nike Air Max 270 G, which features a very narrow base. 

The wide base of the Adidas Tour360 22 gave me the confidence I needed to execute every swing. Uneven lies were no trouble at all, as I was able to escape even the most awkward of positions without losing stability.

The fit was excellent overall for the Adidas Tour360 22, in large part due to the 360Wrap support technology. Basically, Adidas used the TPU stripes on the sides of each shoe as a wrap to enhance the lockdown. With the shoelaces looped through the stripes, my feet felt secure on all sides and in every direction (hence the 360Wrap moniker). 

I went true to size, and that turned out to be the correct choice. 

Adidas Tour360 22 Summary

Adidas wasn’t playing around with this year’s Tour spiked model. Bolstered by excellent traction and long-lasting comfort, the Adidas Tour360 22 is definitely a golf shoe you should get your hands on.

Modern materials mix with a traditional look to make the adidas Tour360 XT-SL comfortable on your feet and your eyes.  Excellent stability and traction in a spikeless golf shoe.

Introduction

Masun Denison, Global Director of Golf Footwear for adidas, may be the most authentic and enthusiastic spokesperson Matt or I met at the 2019 PGA Show.  His depth of knowledge about shoe design and players’ needs and his unbridled passion for the game were infectious.  Adidas had a huge variety of new shoe offerings on display, but the Tour360 XT-SL seemed to really have Masun excited.

Looking down at the adidas Golf Tour360 XT-SL, the shoes look very similar to the Tour 360 Boost 2.0 I reviewed last year.  The clean, rounded toe has a classic look and there’s no mistaking adidas’ iconic three stripes.  The side view blends the look of classic uppers and exposed Boost foam to create a sleek, modern golf shoe .

Flip the shoe over and the sole design makes a traction statement, despite being spikeless.  The multitude of X’s along with depth of tread gave me grip confidence before my first swing.  The Tour360 XT-SL comes in four colorways – three variations on white, plus black.

Right out of the box the Tour360 XT-SL had four noteworthy aspects: wiggle room in the toe box, secure fit midfoot, nice arch support and a slightly raised heel .  Walking in the shoes, three more features came to mind:  wide stable base, flex at the balls of the feet, and responsive cushioning .  Boost gave my step a noticeable bounce.

Inside the shoe, the sockliner is smooth and comfortable .  I like the leather heel lining and cushioning around the ankle , but like most adidas shoes I’ve owned over the years, there’s a bit of play around my heels – easily remedied by sock selection.  Overall sizing was spot on.  I recommend a break-in session at the range or playing just a few holes the first wearing.

Performance

The wide base and slight forward tilt of the adidas Tour360 XT-XL make my stance feel solid and grounded .  The 360Wrap (the striped saddle area) and the Torsion X stability bar (the big dark X you can see in the outsole) seem to harness and then transfer energy in the swing.

The X-Traction lugs provided grip in every ground condition I encountered.  Something my eyes didn’t pick up on initially was the varied heights of the lugs, which certainly helps maintain traction during foot movements on uneven terrain.

I can see why Masun was stoked about the Tour360 XT-SL.  Recognizing that golfers are trending towards spikeless golf shoes, adidas has done a marvelous job providing comfort while maintaining performance.  Personally, I like the convenience of putting on my golf shoes and driving to the course.  The mixed look of a traditional golf shoe and modern materials is well executed, making the Tour360 XT-SL appealing to golfers young and old seasoned.

The only issue with the “new” 360’s is the traction(or lack of) … in Orlando it may be a breeze, but when you play courses like Sequoyah National Golf Club or any of the “mountain style” golf courses (especially in the morning dew”) they don’t due much to hold on – most “seasoned players” leave them in their trunk and use their 2 year old spikes.

So what is “spot on” sizing? I’ve always found Adidas sizing to be all over the place. I can always wear an 11 in FootJoy or Puma and 11.5 in Nike, but with Adidas I’ve gone from 10.5 to 12.5 in different models.

My ‘stock’ size is 9.5 and I most often test in that size just for the comparison you talk about. So for these shoes, spot on was 9.5.
