ALBA Creative City for Gastronomy
Welcome to the city of the hundred towers!
Alba is a city nestled among the hills of southern Piedmont, an ideal centre between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps; the beating heart at the centre of the Langhe, Alba is surrounded by an extraordinary landscape rich in nature, vineyards, hazelnut groves and woods featuring unique colours; a landscape shaped by man, rich in history, traditions, picturesque villages, castles and bell towers.
Thanks to the creative flair of visionary men and women from this noble land, the cuisine of excellence has become the expression of a truly unique history, steeped in traditional recipes that have been handed down over time and yet entwined with modern cuisine innovation. A unique and inimitable gastronomic culture.
Gastronomic Culture
The city and the area offer a rich selection of inns and restaurants: gastronomic experiences where the chefs' creative flair gives unique sensations both in terms of taste and the beauty captured in each dish. A cuisine of excellence that has revolutionized traditional dishes by turning them into culinary art.

The capital of the Langhe has about thirty thousand inhabitants and is located on the right side of the river Tanaro.
Torri di Alba
Founded over two thousand years ago, this town has often been invaded and plundered over the centuries, but it still preserves its ancient churches and some of its medieval towers which proudly rose above the houses and gave Alba the name of the “ town of a hundred towers ”. Nowadays, there are about ten towers (which were built as a sign of wealth or to defend the town), located in the well preserved medieval old town.
The historic centre of Alba begins in via Cavour, a street which is rich in medieval buildings (Artesiano’s Tower, the Merchants’ Lodge and an aristocratic fortified building with lancet windows) leading to the Cathedral square. There, you can find the Town Hall, whose council chamber preserves some precious works of art, such as a painting by Macrino d’Alba , a great painter of the Piedmontese Renaissance. The square is dominated by the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which was first built in Romanesque style in the 12th Century, completely rebuilt in 1486 and restored many times over the centuries. Located a few minutes away on foot from the Cathedral, you can reach the Church of San Domenico, built in the late 12th Century in early Gothic style.
Via Vittorio Emanuele (or Via Maestra ) is the main street of Alba, it crosses the entire old town and ends in Piazza Savona, where the arcades and the buildings of the 19th Century face the modern part of Alba, tied to industry and tourism. The square is dominated by an illuminated fountain dedicated to the Cavaliere del Lavoro Giovanni Ferrero, who founded the main confectionery industry together with his brother Pietro. The Savona Hotel, the oldest hotel in Alba, is on the right side of Piazza Savona. It was founded by Giacomo Morra (1889-1963), also known as “ the king of truffles ”, who devised the first marketing operation of the 20th Century by creating the myth of the white truffle and, as a result, the fame of Alba in the whole world.

A town located in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont region, which holds the record for the oldest White Truffle Fair which takes place between October and November. Before November 13th , tha date of the the famous auction, the town of Alba is a flurry of appointments and initiatives, starting with the World Truffle Market event , where visitors can find many types of certified truffles. In fact, the truffles on sale are analysed and certified by a monitoring committee, which acts as a consumers' desk, operating throughout the exhibition's opening hours and to whom the purchasers can refer at any time.

A once-powerful city-state whose centre sported more than 100 towers, Alba is considered the capital of the Langhe, and has big-city confidence and energy while retaining all the grace and warmth of a small rural town. Alba's considerable gastronomic reputation comes courtesy of its white truffles, dark chocolate and wine. Its annual autumn truffle fair draws huge crowds and the odd truffle-mad celebrity. The vendemmia (grape harvest) remains refreshingly local and low key, if ecstatic in its own way.

Where to Stay in Alba: A cheat sheet to visiting Barolo
Let’s discuss where to stay in alba, italy.
(SPOILER ALERT: You may not stay in Alba at all!)
A question I get a lot from would-be Piedmont travelers is where to stay in the Piedmont wine region . There are a ton of options, but making the decision on where to stay needs some consideration because the area is quite rural. So, when where to stay in Alba, Italy comes up, I tackle it by helping people consider three most factors: functionality, practicality, and geography.
My probe typically starts with: Do you want to stay in the countryside (quieter = more isolated), a village (a little more going on), or a city (more amenities and most everything is walkable)?
A break down the main considerations of where to stay in the Piedmont wine region
Will you have a rental car? If yes: You can stay pretty much anywhere because lodging will be easily accessible.
Do you plan to get your rental at the airport where you arrive, or pick it up on your trip? If the latter, note that in the Langhe, opening hours and locations are not always convenient. But, that being said, plan in advance for 1) transportation to the rental car location and 2) know the opening hours if you plan to get one while in the area. Remember: Rental car places close during lunch.
If you won’t be driving, note that public transportation into and around the area is limited, so if you want to stay in a small village or the countryside, that lends another set of considerations.
– There is a train into Alba and Asti and a limited bus system. So, getting to the countryside or village accommodations may require a driver or a taxi service. Taxi services are easier to find at the train station in Asti, but not always immediately available in Alba.
– You can schedule a driver service in advance; often your lodging can help with that – we often help with transfers for our Barolo wine tour clients.
– Public transportation for visiting Barolo and Barbaresco proves challenging without wheels (or, good hiking boots!) Note that there are no ride sharing services like Uber or Lyft and taxis generally need to be booked in advance. So, make that a consideration if you plan to stay in more isolated location, like the countryside or a small village.
– When visiting Barolo and Barbaresco, there are a few villages that are a bit bigger with enough going on that you will have a good selection of restaurants, wine bars, etc. I often recommend those as middle ground for folks who want something quieter, away from a city like Alba, but not in the country or a more isolated village. See more on those villages below.
– Asti hotels and lodging are a popular choice, but note that the main city itself is about 25 to 30 minutes from Barbaresco and 40+ minutes from Barolo. There is a bus into Alba, but access to the Langhe and Roero villages are limited. That said, for those looking for convenience and accessibility, I recommend that you stay in Alba.
First Tip on Where to Stay in Alba: Map It!
Okay, let’s start with some words on orientation because this part of the Piedmont wine region is quite rural. Seriously, Google Maps is your friend.
When you ask about where to stay in Alba, Italy, you are talking about a city.
I can’t stress it enough: When you decide where to stay in Alba, Italy do a Google Maps search to understand where the location is with respect to your plans for the trip. I say this as someone who works with lots of people visiting Barolo and the surrounding area.
I’ve had clients disappointed to realize they are staying well outside of the city of Alba and even further from the area’s main popular destinations of Barolo and Barbaresco. It can be that they are 5 to 10 km / 3 to 6 miles outside of Alba, so not walkable as they’d hoped. And, another thing that comes up is that many times Barolo wine tour clients tell me they are staying in Alba, but in fact, they are staying about 20 / 30 minutes away in a village or the countryside.
For wine tour pickups, that is not a big deal as the itinerary is done well in advance, so your driver will know. However, it’s an important distinction if you hoped for easy access to the Alba dining, wine-ing, and shopping scene.
Where to Stay in Alba, Italy: The City
Alba is located about 50 km / 31 miles from Turin, the capital of the Piedmont region . The city itself is situated almost directly between Barolo and Barbaresco and near to the Roero.
With a population of about 32000, area visitors get access to plenty of amenities (think restaurants, shopping, grocery stores, Thursday / Saturday outdoor markets, post office, tourist office, etc). ( Where to stay in Turin .)
There are a great many hotels and holiday rentals in Alba and the train station is less than a five-minute walk from Piazza Michele Ferrero. So, for lodging in Alba, we suggest the historic center. It’s small enough to give you that charming life-in-Italy vibe but you pretty much everything you need is in walking distance.
Bonus: Alba is only about 15 / 20 minutes to Barolo or Barbaresco, making it a perfect central point for Langhe wine tours.
EDITORS HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS: Palazzo Finati , Hotel Calissano , Hotel Ristorante I Castelli
Okay, this was a lot of information to digest. So, let’s take a little break.
Staying in Barolo and Barbaresco Villages
If your heart is set on staying in a village, but you don’t want to hassle with a car, my suggestions are:
Barolo Villages
Barolo: Barolo village has a pharmacy, restaurants, enotecas/wine shops, wineries, walk-in tasting rooms, and more. Don’t miss Enoteca La Vita Turchese – often we organize specialty tasting during my Barolo wine tours.
EDITOR’S HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS : Hotel Barolo , Easy Cosi , Vicolo del Pozzo di Gianni Marenco , Casa in Barolo
La Morra: The highest point in the Langhe with a gorgeous viewpoint of all the Barbaresco and Barolo villages as well as Alba. Great restaurants, bakeries, a tourist office, wine bars, and walk-in tasting rooms.
EDITOR’S HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS: Corte Gondina Boutique Hotel , Rocche Costamagna Art Suites
Monforte: For me, probably the most charming Barolo village with captivating views and medieval architecture.
EDITOR’S HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS: Hotel Villa Beccaris , La Ribezza Boutique Hotel
Novello: One of the lesser-known villages with great energy, plenty of restaurants, and a gas station in the village!
Verduno: I adore Verduno. It’s a little more sleepy than the others listed but oozes character. Don’t miss the fabulous, rustic Trattoria dei Bercau .
Castiglione Falletto: Also small, but bursting with fabulous authentic and fine dining options, as well as great lodging options. Visit Renza’s for lunch with one of the Langhe’s most amazing views.
Barbaresco Village
Neive: The historic center is beyond charming with one of my favorite wine bars, Cinciallegra. About a 15- to 20-minute walk from the village in the vineyards area are the Francone winery’s holiday apartments.
If you stay in one of these villages, as noted, you’ll just need to get transportation there from the train station or airport. Once you are there, you’ll find a smattering of dining options, walk-in tasting rooms, and shopping.
These are good options for folks who plan to use a Barolo wine tour service and / or want to explore the area on foot or bike. There are a ton of vineyard hiking trails and pretty much every one of these villages has a bike rental location (traditional road or mountain OR electric bike, which is so nice for the hefty hills).
So, there you have it. Some considerations for where to stay in Alba, Italy…even if you find you are staying a bit outside of Alba!
EDITOR’S HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS: Hotel Castello di Sinio

Wonderful Time in Italy We were covered from the moment we landed in Rome. The drivers were great, the connections were flawless, and it was well-planned a...
Whether or not you want to taste the extraordinary wines, Alba is worth the visit for its alluring mix of red-brick medieval towers, Baroque and Renaissance palaces and cobbled streets. And if you come in early October, you might catch the town’s hilarious annual donkey race – a skit on nearby Asti’s prestigious Palio.
The town’s only sight as such is its late-Gothic Duomo, standing confectionery-pink on the central Piazza Risorgimento. But Alba is primarily a place to stroll and eat. Leading up to the centre from Piazza Savona, the main drag of Via Vittorio Emanuele is a fine, bustling street, with Alba’s local produce on display – wines, truffles, cheeses, weird and wonderful mushroom varieties, and the wickedly sticky nocciola, a nutty, chocolatey cake. Via Cavour is a pleasant medieval street, behind which the donkey race and displays of medieval pageantry attract the crowds during the October festival. There’s also an annual truffle festival later in the month, when you could blow your whole budget on a knobbly truffle or a meal in one of the many swanky restaurants. At the end of April/beginning of May, the Vinum wine festival gives you the chance to taste five hundred local wines.

Surrounded by the magnificent snow capped mountains of the Alps , Alba is hilly and slightly mountainous and the best way to get here, is to drive. Alba and Barolo are one of the richest areas for white truffles , not to mention the hills of Asti ( Palio di Asti , Festival delle Sagre di Asti 2019 ) and the Langhe. We find the white truffles, like the black ones, under the ground, up to a depth of one meter, near trees like Poplars and Lilies, from September to February.

Monforte D’Alba Travel Guide
Discover Wineries, Vineyards, Private Wine Tours, Truffle Hunting & What to do in Monforte D’Alba, Langhe, Piedmont, Italy.
The small Italian village of Monforte D’Alba is one of the most interesting historical centre of Langhe’s area. In this travel guide you will find the best place to see, where to sleap and what to do, best tours and experience (wine tours, truffle hunting, cooking lesson), Cycling & Hiking Tours in Monforte D’Alba.
The name of the village derives from the latin “Mons Fortis” and alludes to the important position from the defensive and strategic point of view of the village, that is situated on a hill and fortified by a surrounding wall. From Monforte they can enjoy a wonderful view of surrounding hills upto the Alpine arc.
After a sequence of events, the village became, in the thirteenth century, the feud of the Marquises Del Carretto, which later were replaced by the Marquises Scarampi of Cairo. In 1703 it was conquered by the troops of Savoy House, and then finally went to the kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia.
The old town centre, fan-shaped arranged and perched around the old bell tower, was restored several times, in particular many noble and bourgeois palaces, bringing the village to its former glory.
At the center of the village is located Scarampi Palace which stands on the ruins of an ancient castle, documented in texts of the eleventh century, but no visible traces are available.
Where to stay in Monforte D’Alba?
Church “madonna della neve”.
Far away from the center is located the imposing parish Church called “Madonna della Neve”. The building began in June 1909, according to the design of the engineer Giuseppe Gallo of Turin, and finished in October 1912. It has a neo-gothic style and presents a latin cross plant The main facade is preceded by a wide staircase. The facade is divided in three vertical bodies. On the portals appear high-reliefs, created by Oreste Torello of Biella.
A curiosity that concerns the village is linked to the presence, during the eleventh century, of a large community of heretics. In the middle of the eleventh century, the archbishop Aribert, head of the Diocese of Alba, ordered the deportation of Monforte’s heretics to Milan, where they were burned at the stake. An inn in the center of the village remembers this sad event.
Perno Village
In this place is possible to find the wine production of the commune of Monforte D’Alba. From June 2014 the vineyards are part of the heritage of Unesco.
A few kilometers away from the main village, on top of a hill surrounded by two wooded areas, is located the small rural village of Perno. The small village was established around the castle, built in the thirteenth century and profoundly altered during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The exterior curtain wall is the oldest part, built in splitted stone masonry, equipped with small defensive towers to protect the corners. Next to the castle is situated the country chapel dedicated to Santo Stefano, built in the same period of the castle on a site previously used as a burial ground. it was reshaped between 1753 and 1757. Inside are preserved frescoes of the late fourteenth and early twentieth century.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly
A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti
For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.
Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.
Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow
However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.
One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.
Finding the right exit
At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.
The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.
According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.
However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”
Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.
The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.
Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.
“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”
Teething problems
Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.
Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow
Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.
“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.
Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.
“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
