Allianz Travel Insurance is provided by Allianz Global Assistance, an insurer that operates in 35 countries and serves 40 million customers in the U.S. The company offers several types of travel insurance plans depending on your needs.

Travel insurance will help protect you if unexpected events affect your vacation. Whether you’re looking for a comprehensive plan or emergency medical coverage only to supplement the travel insurance you have from your credit cards , Allianz Global Assistance offers plenty of options.

Allianz trip insurance plans fall into two categories: single trip and annual/multi-trip plans. We evaluated several single trip and annual/multi-trip plans to help you figure out which policy makes sense for you.

Depending on what type of coverage you’re looking for, Allianz offers several different travel insurance options. Allianz’s plan choices fall under single trip or annual/multi-trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

Annual/multi-trip plans are designed for those who like to take a lot of little trips throughout the year as well as for business travelers. Because the coverage period is longer, these plans are more expensive.

Some of these plans include medical coverage only while others also provide more comprehensive travel insurance perks. There’s coverage for business equipment as these plans are geared toward work travelers.

Allianz offers five travel insurance plans for single trips, including a plan that's mainly focused on emergency medical coverage.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan is geared toward domestic travelers who are looking for trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage but don't need post-departure benefits like emergency medical or baggage loss. This plan is Allianz’s most affordable option.

OneTrip Basic, Prime and Premier are three comprehensive travel insurance plans.

OneTrip Basic is the most economical plan and offers trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits along with emergency medical and baggage loss.

OneTrip Prime provides all the benefits of the Basic plan but with higher limits, a few extra coverage areas and complimentary coverage for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

OneTrip Premier offers the most coverage, doubling almost every post-departure limit of the Prime plan with more covered cancellation reasons.

If you don't need pre-departure trip cancellation and interruption protections or you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , the standalone OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a good choice. The plan mainly provides emergency medical protections along with some baggage loss/delay benefits.

Allianz single-trip plan cost

Here's a look at the cost of an Allianz travel insurance policy for a one-week, $1,500 vacation to Croatia in August 2020 taken by a 30-year-old from Texas.

allianz travel insurance consumer reviews

The OneTrip Premier is the most expensive plan and provides the highest level of protection, especially for emergency medical events.

However, if you’re OK with lower limits on emergency medical, a OneTrip Prime or Basic plan could be a more appropriate choice. These costs represent a range of 3.4%-7.5% of the total cost of the trip, which is in line with typical costs of 4%-8%, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association.

Allianz offers four different annual/multi-trip plans.

AllTrips Basic is suitable for those who would like emergency medical coverage while abroad but don't need trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The AllTrips Prime, Executive and Premier plans provide an entire year of comprehensive travel insurance benefits.

The Executive and Premier plans offer various levels of trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The Executive plan is specifically designed for business travelers since it offers protection for business equipment.

Allianz annual/multi-trip plans cost

Let's look at an example of an annual Allianz travel insurance plan that starts in July 2020 for a 50-year-old from Illinois.

allianz travel insurance consumer reviews

Coverage under these plans is offered for trips up to 45 days in length.

The AllTrips Executive plan costs significantly more than the other plans; this is mainly due to higher trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical and business equipment protections. The Executive coverage amount for trip cancellation can be increased beyond what is quoted here, driving that plan's price up to as much as $785.

If you’re not concerned with pre-trip cancellation benefits and don’t need the increased level of medical coverage, the Basic plan is the most affordable option.

For trips longer than 45 days, the AllTrips Premier plan might be a better choice as it offers coverage for up to 90 days. Using the same search parameters but with 90 days of coverage per trip, the cost of the annual plan is $475.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Choosing the right plan for your trip involves understanding what type of coverage you will want while you’re abroad.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so you may not need a plan that offers all the same coverage. In this case, getting the OneTrip Medical plan might be enough.

If you’re going on a trip and returning home: OneTrip Prime, Basic or Premier are good options to choose from while offering different levels of coverage.

If you’ll be going on multiple and longer trips: the AllTrips Premier plan might be best as it provides insurance benefits for trips up to 90 days in length. The remaining three annual AllTrips plans cover multiple trips, up to 45 days.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate, you don’t have credit card coverage or you didn’t pay for your trip with that credit card: In these instances, it's best to choose a comprehensive plan depending on how much coverage you need and for how long. Consider one of the single trip or multi-trip plans.

Travel insurance plans have a lot of exclusions that you need to pay attention to so you know exactly what type of coverage you’re getting. Here are some general exclusions you can expect:

High-risk activities: Skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and other types of high-risk sporting activities that the insurer deems unsafe.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from intoxication, drug use, self-harm and criminal activity.

Specifically designated events: Epidemics, natural disasters and war are specifically mentioned in the policy as exclusions.

It's important to note that exclusions may vary based on the policy and where you live, so it's always best to review the fine print to ensure you’re clear about what is and isn’t covered.

Allianz has been offering insurance for more than 25 years. The company is well established and offers numerous single and annual travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Allianz travel insurance plans offer a wide array of benefits including (but not limited to): coronavirus-related coverage, trip cancellation, interruption, emergency medical coverage and transportation, baggage loss/damage, baggage delay, travel delay, change fee coverage, loyalty program redeposit fees, 24-hour assistance and many more benefits. Each plan is different, so you’ll want to look at the specific plans you’re considering to know exactly which benefits you’ll receive.

No, Allianz doesn't offer the Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade. Review the policy details of the Allianz plan you’re considering to ensure you’re comfortable with the list of covered reasons. For example, the loss of a job can be considered a covered reason, but wanting to cancel a trip because you’re afraid to travel isn't.

Most often, you will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In other instances (e.g., covered baggage delay), the insurer will pay you a fixed amount per day and you won’t need to submit receipts.

Allianz Global Assistance offers several good travel insurance plans to choose from. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan for a vacation, a single-trip plan is your best bet.

If you’re a frequent traveler or take lots of business trips, a multi-trip plan could be the way to go. If you have a travel credit card, look at what travel insurance benefits you may already have so you don’t duplicate your coverage .

Allianz Travel Insurance Coverage Review — Is It Worth It?

Why Purchase Travel Insurance

Allianz epidemic coverage endorsement, onetrip plans — for affordability and select coverages, alltrips annual plans — cover all of your trips for a 12-month period, how to obtain a quote with allianz, onetrip emergency medical plan, onetrip cancellation plus plan, rental car damage protector, allianz vs. credit card travel insurance, allianz vs. other travel insurance companies, allianz vs. point-of-sale travel insurance and protection, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

There are a lot of choices when it comes to travel insurance companies , so narrowing your selection to those that have a solid financial rating, offer products that provide good value, and receive high customer ratings should be baseline criteria.

Allianz Global Assistance company ( Allianz Travel) checks all of those boxes. Its parent company, Allianz SE, receives an A+ rating from A.M. Best (a leading insurance financial rating firm), and the company offers competitive individual trip and annual travel insurance products. It also serves over 45 million customers in the U.S. each year with 84% of those customers giving the company a 5-star rating.

Allianz has also been around a long time. In fact, the company was there to insure the Wright Brothers’ first flight and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge — so you know you’re working with an established organization. You’ll also find that Allianz does business in more than 35 countries.

Let’s take a look specifically at Allianz Travel’s insurance products, show you how to obtain a quote, and give you some tips on purchasing and comparing travel insurance policies.

And while our focus is on Allianz Travel coverage, much of our information can apply to purchasing travel insurance in general.

Travel insurance can protect your trip investment with coverage for disruption due to unforeseen events such as severe weather, should you become ill, for illness in your family, missed connections, medical emergencies, and more.

Deciding whether to purchase travel insurance for your trip is an option each time you make a travel booking. The coverage is commonly offered by airlines, cruise companies, tour operators and other travel providers at the point of sale. If you travel infrequently and the cost is relatively low, you may just opt for the coverage during the booking process.

However, if you’re going to be taking several trips, you may be able to save money and receive better coverage if you compare with other travel insurance policies in the marketplace. Additionally, you’ll want to determine if it makes sense to purchase single insurance coverage for each trip or an annual all-trips-included policy.

Situations where it makes sense to purchase travel insurance include the following:

  • You’re booking an expensive trip that includes a lot of non-refundable upfront expenses
  • Your trip includes several travel providers (i.e. airlines, hotels, and tour operators)

While travel insurance is meant to cover unforeseen events, purchasing Cancel for Any Reason coverage may allow you to cancel your trip for any reason.

Bottom Line: If you’re uncomfortable with the amount of money you have at risk when you travel, securing travel insurance can provide immediate peace of mind . You’ll have solace in knowing that if you needed to cancel your travel plans due to a covered event or if your travel is disrupted, you’ll be able to recoup most, or all, of your investment.

Travel Insurance and the COVID-19 Virus

Most travel insurance policies do not provide coverage for trip cancellation due to fear of the coronavirus pandemic . However, COVID-19 is an included illness on many travel insurance policies as it relates to certain coverages such as emergency medical care while traveling and canceling a trip if you become ill with the virus. You may also have coverage if a family member or travel companion contracts the virus and you must cancel your trip as a result.

The only way to cover trip cancellations due to fear of contracting COVID-19 is to purchase Cancel for Any Reason insurance. This coverage can be added to a comprehensive travel insurance policy (with limitations) and subsequently allows you to cancel your trip for any reason.

While Allianz does not offer Cancel for Any Reason insurance , it may cover COVID-19 related illness in the following circumstances:

  • Emergency medical care while traveling
  • Trip cancellation due to becoming ill with the virus

Allianz recently announced that it is adding a new endorsement to select policies that will offer limited coverage for COVID-19 . Circumstances such as becoming ill with COVID-19 and having to cancel your trip, hospitalization, and trip delays due to such illness while traveling will have coverage.

Emergency transportation coverage has also been expanded to include COVID-19-related illness. Terms and conditions apply and the endorsement is not available on all policies Allianz offers.

You can find policies that offer Cancel for Any Reason insurance at TravelInsurance.com  and Aardy.com .

Bottom Line: Travel insurance policies normally do not cover canceling your trip because of fear you might get ill. However, Cancel for Any Reason insurance allows you to cancel a trip for any reason you determine is necessary.

Types of Travel Insurance Policies Available With Allianz

Allianz Travel offers 2 core types of travel insurance plans: single trip plans and multi-trip plans . Each plan allows you to select the level of coverage you want and subsequently, the level of premium you prefer to pay.

We’ve used criteria to obtain a quote for a traveler age 35, traveling for 1 week to Mexico on a trip costing $3,000 . All benefits are per person, per trip, unless otherwise noted.

Allianz OneTrip Plans

The single trip option allows you to select from a Basic, Prime, or Premier plan. Premiums vary by plan and coverage levels.  For the example we selected, the premiums ranged from  $116 for the Basic to $192 for the Premier pla n .

OneTrip Basic Plan — the Most Affordable Plan

The OneTrip Basic plan offers basic trip protection at an affordable price.

Allianz OneTrip Basic Plan

OneTrip Prime Plan — the Most Popular Plan

Need more coverage but still want your travel insurance protection to be affordable? The OneTrip Prime plan offers higher coverage limits at a reasonable cost.

Allianz OneTrip Prime Plan

The following are the maximum coverage limits for OneTrip plans. These coverages can be found under the OneTrip Premier Plan:

  • Trip Cancellation —  up to $100,000 reimbursement for prepaid non-refundable expenses; pre-existing medical conditions included
  • Trip Interruption —  up to $150,000 reimburses for remaining non-recoverable expenses and increased cost of return transport due to trip interruption as the result of a covered event; pre-existing medical conditions included
  • Emergency Medical — up to $25,000
  • Emergency Medical Transportation — up to $500,000 for transportation to the nearest medical facility
  • Baggage Loss/Damage — up to $1,000 for theft, loss, or damage
  • Baggage Delay —  up to $300 for delays 12 hours or more
  • Trip Delay — up to $800 ($200/day for 4 days) for delays of 6 hours or more, for eligible expenses; an option to receive $100/day with no receipts required is also available
  • Change Fee Coverage — $500
  • Loyalty Program Re-deposit Fee Coverage — $500, covers re-deposit of points/miles due to covered trip cancellation
  • 24 Hour Hotline Assistance
  • Optional coverages include pre-existing medical coverage, rental car coverage, and required to work coverage — restrictions apply

Also worth noting is that kids age 17 and under are covered at no additional charge when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

Bottom Line: Allianz offers several levels of single-trip travel insurance plans that can fit every budget and level of coverage needed.

Allianz AllTrips Annual Plan

If you’re a frequent traveler and want to ensure all of your trips are covered without having to purchase individual travel insurance policies, one of the AllTrips plans might be an appropriate choice. All of the trips you book within the 12-month policy period are covered automatically.

Coverage limits are per person, per trip, but more than 1 person can be included in the policy. Children 17 and under are covered at no additional charge when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

The AllTrips Executive plan is the most comprehensive policy and includes the maximum coverage limits listed below . AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Basic have less coverage than the Executive plan but may still be appropriate for your situation.

For example, the AllTips Basic plan does not include trip cancellation/interruption insurance but has emergency medical, evacuation, trip delay, baggage insurance, and car rental insurance.

  • Trip Cancellation —  up to $10,000 reimbursement for prepaid non-refundable expenses
  • Trip Interruption —  up to $10,000 reimburses for remaining non-recoverable expenses and increased cost of return transport due to trip interruption as the result of a covered event
  • Emergency Medical — up to$50,000
  • Emergency Medical Transportation — up to $250,000 for transportation to the nearest medical facility
  • Baggage Loss/Damage —  up to $1,000 for theft, loss, or damage
  • Baggage Delay — up to $1,000 for delays 12 hours or more
  • Trip Delay —  up to $200 per day for eligible expenses, up to $1,600 in coverage , for delays of 6 hours or more
  • Rental Car Damage and Theft — up to $45,000
  • Business Equipment Coverage — up to $1,000
  • Change Fee Coverage — up to $500
  • Loyalty Program Redeposit Fee — up to $500
  • Travel Accident Insurance — up to $50,000
  • Concierge Services
  • Optional Pre-Existing Medical Coverage — restrictions apply

Bottom Line: Allianz’s AllTrips 12-month plans offer affordable options to cover every trip you have booked or have yet to book within a 12-month period.

Allianz Quote

Travel insurance is one of the easiest policies for which to obtain a quote and subsequently purchase a policy. Unlike auto or home insurance, you simply input some basic information about your trip, your age, where you reside, and your quote is instant.

You can then read through the coverages, select a policy that fits, and hit the purchase button. There is also no risk as you’ll have a free-look period where you can review the policy and decide whether to keep it or not.

If not, you can get a full refund. This period can be 10-14 days after purchase , depending on your plan and state regulations.

Allianz OneTrip Emergency Medical

Additional Travel Insurance Offered by Allianz

In addition to the travel insurance packages offered by Allianz, you can purchase these additional plans and coverages available for single trips:

If trip interruption/cancellation is not important to you, you’ll find this plan with emergency medical, baggage insurance , emergency transport, travel accident coverage , and trip delay an affordable alternative.

If you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason or your trip is interrupted for a covered event, you’ll have coverage. Trip delay and 24-hour assistance are included.

For $9 per day, receive rental car damage/theft coverage, rental car trip interruption protection, and baggage loss coverage.

Hot Tip: If trip cancellation/interruption or trip delay coverage comes with your credit card is adequate for your trip but you want additional medical coverage, the Allianz’s OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a viable and affordable supplement.

How Allianz Compares

When it comes to comparing travel insurance policies, it’s difficult to match apples to apples. Coverages vary widely, as well as terms and conditions. The lowest-priced policy is not always the best value for your needs. The flip side is possible, too. You may find a policy with plenty of coverage at a price that is more than you want to spend.

The best solution is when you find a balance between coverage and cost.

Here’s how Allianz’s travel insurance offerings compare with other travel insurance options.

The coverage that comes with your credit card does not compare with a comprehensive travel insurance policy . In addition to the limited travel insurance coverage credit cards offer, if you do have a claim, you’ll have the potential hassle of dealing with a third-party claims administrator.

With that being said, the trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay insurance, and primary rental car insurance coverages found on several credit cards may be more than adequate for your trip.

Here are some of the best credit cards for travel insurance:

Before purchasing any travel insurance policy, it’s wise to compare — fortunately that’s an easy task to execute. With comparison sites such as the ones listed here, you can compare as many as 100 travel insurance policies very quickly and find a policy that fits your situation and budget.

Keep in mind that insurance rates and coverages are highly regulated by the states . Insurance companies file a certain policy for a certain price with the state insurance commission, then the company is allowed to offer that policy, at that price, in that state.

For this reason, you won’t find the same policy offered at different prices. However, you could find a policy that is a better fit and possibly for less money by comparing several companies’ offerings.

Not all comparison sites include Allianz but when comparing similar policies, you’ll find that the company is competitively priced (a few companies lower and many companies higher). Individual results will vary based on your criteria.

Here are 4 websites that allow you to easily compare travel insurance policies.

  • Insure My Trip — With over 60,000 customer reviews, 21 highly-rated travel insurance providers, and a best price guarantee, Insure My Trip makes it easy to find the right travel insurance policy.
  • Travelinsurance.com — Compare major top-rated travel insurance company policies easily with this licensed online insurance search engine.
  • SquareMouth — This popular travel insurance search engine offers easy comparisons of hundreds of policies offered by dozens of highly-rated insurance companies.
  • Aardy — AardvarkCompare is a licensed travel insurance company with agents on staff to help you find the right travel insurance policy. Its website allows you to compare the policies of over 30 travel insurance providers.

There are also specialty companies such as World Nomads  that do a great job providing travel insurance for active individuals. If you’re into outdoor sports, adventure activities, or even more risky activities such as skydiving, you can find coverage through World Nomads.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking to purchase a travel insurance policy, you’ll want to compare companies and policies . First, look at companies with a strong financial rating, select a policy with coverages that are a priority to you, then select a premium you’re comfortable paying.

Delta Flight Insurance

Allianz is actually one of the companies that provides the travel insurance you’re offered when you book a flight. An example is displayed in the above image of their offerings when you purchase a Delta Air Lines ticket.

Point-of-sale travel insurance, however, can run from inexpensive options that offer little coverage to expensive options that provide greater coverage but still have limitations, similar to stand-along travel insurance policies.

If you fly once or twice a year, the coverage is adequate for your needs, and the cost is reasonable, you may easily choose to go this route and purchase coverage at the point of sale. However, you may fare better by securing a separate travel insurance quote to compare coverage/cost.

Always read the fine print before purchasing any coverage to ensure you’re getting the coverage you expect. For example, one might assume by looking at this example that canceling the trip would be covered, when in reality the covered reasons are limited.

Bottom Line: Even for point-of-sale travel insurance to cover a single travel purchase, it’s good to get a comparison quote. Securing a quote may save you money while offering broader coverage that could cover your entire trip versus just a portion of it.

Allianz is a solid, established, company offering a nice selection of packaged travel insurance products. Its website is easy to use with a quick quoting function and a simple purchase process. The site is also easy to understand as it is clearly written in plain language rather than legal verbiage.

One downside of Allianz is that the company does not sell Cancel for Any Reason Insurance . This is not an issue if you understand this up front and know that your policy does not allow you to cancel a trip for just any reason. After all, this is the case with most travel insurance — there are specific covered reasons for being able to cancel a trip and have coverage.

Cancel for Any Reason insurance can also result in a premium as much as 70% more than a standard policy, so many travelers may not consider it due to its cost.

If money is not a concern, you can purchase as much insurance as you’d like to have. However, in reality, purchasing travel insurance that works for you involves finding a balance between the coverage you want and the maximum premium you’re willing to pay.

Allianz is a respected company that offers a variety of policy choices with appropriate coverage for the majority of travelers at price points that fit most budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is travel insurance worth it.

Yes, it can be worth it. If you are uncomfortable with the amount of money you would lose or be forced to pay in the event you had to cancel your trip or if you incurred disruption while traveling, you should purchase travel insurance.

An inexpensive trip or single flight may not warrant purchasing travel insurance, but insuring an expensive or complicated trip where you have a lot of non-refundable prepaid expenses at risk makes economic sense.

Travel insurance also provides the intangible benefit of peace of mind, knowing you are protected if you have to cancel due to a covered event or your trip is disrupted once in motion.

What is covered for trip cancellation?

There are limited covered reasons for receiving a benefit from trip cancellation insurance. The number 1 reason most travelers cancel their trips, according to InsureMyTrip.com , is the unforeseen illness of the traveler or of family members.

Fortunately, this is a covered reason for trip cancellation, although the level of coverage varies by company and policy.

Additional covered reasons can include death, hospitalization, or accident to you or covered family, legal obligations, your home becomes uninhabitable, the default of the travel provider, or natural disaster.

Deciding not to take a trip is not a covered reason for trip cancellation. Cancel for Any Reason insurance must be purchased in order to cover canceling a trip for a reason you personally deem necessary.

Does travel insurance cover flight cancellations?

Yes, travel insurance can cover flight cancellations in certain circumstances and depending on the policy purchased.

However, if an airline cancels your flight, whether prior to travel or during your travels, you would first contact the airline or the agency where you purchased your ticket for rebooking, a refund, or travel credit.

If you are not made whole, you could then look for coverage in your travel insurance policy.

If a flight is canceled due to weather during your travels, for example, and you are forced to incur unexpected expenses as a result, you could have coverage under a travel insurance policy if these expenses are not covered, or insufficiently covered, by the airline.

There could also be coverage under trip interruption/delay insurance if an airline cancels a flight and it causes you to miss ongoing travel which has been prepaid and is non-refundable.

Which is the best travel insurance company?

The best travel insurance company will have a high financial rating from a respected insurance industry rating company such as A.M. Best, offer a selection of coverages that matches your protection priorities, and does this at a price you’re willing to pay.

You should check reviews as well, keeping in mind that most consumers want to pay the least amount of money they can at the time of purchase and by doing so, coverage can be sacrificed. When there’s a claim, it’s natural to want the highest degree of coverage, although that may not have been the level purchased.

Allianz is one of the leaders in the travel insurance industry, included in our guide on the best international travel insurance . With 10 plans split between single trip, annual, and rental car insurance, Allianz has its bases covered. It also provides specific insurance for particular needs, such as annual policies for business travelers and sports equipment coverage for athletes.

While Allianz is one of the best international travel insurance providers, it also has great CFAR coverage for its Prime and Premier single trip plans, covering 80% of nonrefundable travel expenses when most policies usually offer 75%. It's also great for families, with coverage for kids 17 and under in its One

Allianz is well reviewed among customers, receiving an average of 4.3 stars out of five across nearly 70,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Its Better Business Bureau page fares a little worse, receiving 3.64 stars out of five across 1,600 reviews. Positive reviews mentioned an easy and quick claims process with a responsive customer service team. However, negative reviews often mentioned difficulty specifically with claims for ticketed events.

Allianz also has a highly rated mobile app called Allyz TravelSmart through which you can contact customer service, view your plan, and file a claim. It received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store.

Allianz travel insurance offers different policies, grouped under two types: single trips and annual multi-trip insurance .

The company's travel insurance policies can include the following coverage types:

  • Trip interruption coverage , which can help recoup costs if you leave a trip early.
  • Travel delay , which can cover some costs if you need additional accommodations due to a delay in travel.
  • Emergency medical transportation , which covers transportation to a hospital for eligible illnesses and injuries.
  • Emergency medical expenses in case of a dental or medical emergency.
  • Baggage delay , which can cover some costs if you need to purchase required items due to your bags being delayed by a certain period of time. Must have receipts for this.
  • Baggage loss or damage , which can help recoup some costs if your bag is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement, which can help recoup costs if you must cancel a nonrefundable trip due to an epidemic. It's important to note that there may be limitations and this isn't an option everywhere.
  • Travel accident coverage , which can cover costs related to an injury that results in loss of vision, your hands or feet, as well as loss of life.
  • Support via a 24-hour hotline

Single-Trip Plans

The general budget option is OneTrip Basic, which can offer various protections should something happen, if you file a claim for a qualified reason.

One step up is the OneTrip Prime policy, one of the most popular plans Allianz offers. It has higher coverage limits than the Basic plan, along with some additional perks.

A more complete option is OneTrip Premier, which includes more comprehensive protections should you need them. This policy is for more extensive, longer trips and includes extras like SmartBenefits—which up to $100 per day for a covered travel or baggage delay with no receipts necessary, only proof of delay—and sports equipment loss coverage.

The coverage limits available vary by plan. Here's an overview of what each policy covers:

Other OneTrip Premier benefits not mentioned in the table above include:

  • Sports Traveler, reimbursement up to $1,000 in the event of a missed sports event for a qualified reason
  • Sports Equipment Loss, reimbursement up to $1,000 to cover damaged or lost sports equipment
  • Sports Equipment Rental, reimbursement up to $1,000 for the cost to rent sports equipment if your equipment is damaged or lost
  • Vehicle return, up to $750 reimbursement to return your vehicle to your home if you can't drive it for a qualified reason
  • Adventure and sports exclusions changes, which allows you to waive some losses in the event you participate in high-risk activities like free diving at 30 ft, scuba diving at 100 ft, caving, and more

There are two additional single-trip plans from Allianz that offer more specialized coverage: One Trip Emergency and OneTrip Cancellation Plus.

OneTrip Emergency Medical

OneTrip Emergency Medical is a budget option that exclusively offers post-departure benefits to cover you while you're on your trip. As such, the plan doesn't include pre-departure benefits such as trip cancellation or interruption.

  • Travel delay, up to $200 per day per person for a maximum of $1000 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $10,000
  • Emergency medical transportation, up to $250,000
  • Emergency medical expenses, up to $50,000 though dental emergencies have a maximum of $750
  • Baggage delay, up to $750 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $2000
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement
  • Concierge services included

OneTrip Cancellation Plus

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus policy by Allianz is its economical back-to-basics option that can recoup costs in the event of a travel delay, interruption, or cancellation for a qualified reason. This policy includes:

  • Travel interruption coverage, up to $5,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000
  • Travel delay, up to $150 with delays of six hours and beyond

Multi-Trip Plans

The aforementioned policies are for single trips, but with Allianz travel insurance it's possible to get an annual/multi-trip policy.

The starter annual plan is the AllTrips Basic policy which includes the most basic coverage, and it excludes both trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

The AllTrips Prime policy is geared toward travelers who take a minimum of three trips each year and comes with additional coverage compared to the basic plan.

Another annual plan is the AllTrips Premier policy, which is geared toward frequent travelers and includes higher coverage limits and choices.

AllTrips Executive

Additionally, there's the AllTrips Executive policy, which may be a good fit if you're a frequent business traveler. Under this plan, personal travel is also covered. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500 or $10,000
  • Travel delay, with a daily limit of $200 up to $1,600 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $50,000
  • Baggage delay, up to $1,000 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $1,000
  • Rental car damage and theft coverage, up to $45,000
  • Business equipment coverage, up to $1,000 in the event your business equipment gets lost or damaged
  • Business equipment rental coverage, up to $1,000 in the event you need to rent business equipment due to loss, damage, or theft
  • Change fee coverage, up to $500 to recoup costs of changing a ticket for a qualified reason
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage, up to $500 to recover fees lost due to getting loyalty points back after a canceled trip
  • Pre-existing condition coverage available when purchased within 15 days of first trip deposit

Additional Coverage Offered by Allianz

Aside from the travel insurance policies from Allianz listed above that help travelers prepare for interruptions and cancellations, there are additional add-ons that can cover more.

OneTrip Rental Car Protector

If you're looking for rental car coverage, Allianz offers the OneTrip Rental Car Protector policy for $11 per day. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $1,000
  • Collision damage waiver, up to $50,000 which helps cover costs in the event your rental car is damaged in an accident or stolen

On top of the rental car coverage plan, with the OneTrip Prime plan, there's an optional upgrade to get Required to Work coverage. If there is a work-related emergency and you need to cancel for a qualified reason, this coverage can help recover expenses.

Cancel For Any Reason

An optional upgrade for OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier, Allianz cancel for any reason policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs when canceling a trip for any reason. Allianz stands out compared to the best CFAR travel insurance as most policies only offer 75% coverage.

What's Not Included with Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz travel insurance covers the basics and more and has some high-risk activity exclusions in the OneTrip Premier plan. Aside from that, Allianz travel insurance excludes the following:

  • Acts of violence, such as war, terrorism, and civil unrest
  • Risky adventure sports
  • Unexpected natural disasters (OneTrip Premier allows cancellation due to hurricane warnings)
  • Any travel alerts or government regulations and more

If you're interested in coverage for activities like scuba diving, skiing, and more, consider World Nomads, which covers more than 200 activities.

Allianz Single Trip Travel Insurance Estimates

How much travel insurance costs with Allianz will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of policy you purchase. To get a quote with Allianz, you'll need to provide the following:

  • Your destination
  • Travel dates
  • The state you live in
  • The total cost of the trip

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $102 for OneTrip Basic
  • $151 for OneTrip Prime
  • $184 for OneTrip Premier

A 30-year-old traveler from California is heading to Japan for two weeks, costing $4,000. The Allianz travel insurance quotes are:

  • $153 for OneTrip Basic
  • $195 for OneTrip Prime
  • $270 for OneTrip Premier

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $298 for OneTrip Basic (total for two travelers)
  • $400 for OneTrip Prime (total for two travelers)
  • $540 for OneTrip Premier (total for two travelers)

Allianz travel insurance premiums generally stack up favorably against the average cost of travel insurance  which is $248 per trip, but again, the specifics of your trip will largely determine how much you'll pay to insure it.

Allianz Annual Multi-Trip Estimates

To receive a quote on Allianz annual plans, you don't need nearly as much information. You just need the following:

  • Insurance start date
  • Your state of residence

A 30-year-old New York resident looking for travel insurance will pay the following prices for annual travel insurance with Allianz:

  • Allianz Basic: $125
  • Allianz Premier: $249
  • Allianz Executive: $459

A 60-year-old couple from Texas will pay the following:

  • Allianz Basic: $63 per traveler, $126 total
  • Allianz Premier: $217.50 per traveler, $435 total
  • Allianz Executive: $485 per traveler, $970 total

Filing A Claim with Allianz Travel Insurance

If you purchase a travel insurance policy through Allianz and experience a qualifying event, you can file a claim on the company's website or via its TravelSmart app.

To file a claim with Allianz, you'll need to submit information on their website or app about the type of claim and provide supporting documentation, as well as payment information to get reimbursed. You'll need to select the plan and include your email or policy number as well as your departure date.

If you need assistance when filing a claim with Allianz, you can reach the company at 1-866-884-3556. To reach out to Allianz online, you can submit your request via its contact form.

See how Allianz stacks up against the competition.

Allianz Travel Insurance vs. AXA Travel Insurance

Competitor AXA travel insurance covers 75% of your nonrefundable costs if you choose to cancel, for any reason (as the name suggests) if you choose that as an upgrade and buy it two weeks before your first trip deposit. Allianz's CFAR policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs.

That said, if we look at the travel insurance quotes based on a 30-year-old traveler from California going to Japan in the first two weeks of October paying a total of $4,000 for the trip, AXA travel insurance is more affordable. It's $97 for its Silver plan, which covers 100% trip cancellation and interruption. Compare this to $153 for the OneTrip Basic Plan through Allianz.

Read our AXA travel insurance review here.

Allianz Travel Insurance  vs. HTH Travel Insurance

Allianz is a good travel insurance option if you're looking for a variety of customized choices. Another competitor, HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance , has three trip protection options.

TripProtector Economy is HTH's budget option and may be a good fit if you're looking for higher medical coverage limits. This policy covers up to $75,000 in accident and sick benefits and $500 in dental benefits.

Plus, the policy covers up to $500,000 for an emergency evacuation. The OneTrip Basic policy from Allianz covers the same dental benefits but offers just $10,000 in medical expenses.

Read our HTH travel insurance review here.

Allianz vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

A travel insurance policy can offer robust protections, but if you're looking for something basic for trip interruption or cancellation and rental car coverage, check your travel rewards credit card. If you experience illness, weather, or cancellations that affect your trip, you may be able to recoup costs.

Credit card travel insurance coverage may be a good fit for short trips where you don't have a ton of upfront prepaid costs. However, if you're going to be away for a while, have many prepaid expenses, and are concerned about medical coverage, traditional travel insurance may be your best bet.

How We Reviewed Allianz Travel Insurance

As part of this Allianz travel insurance review, we looked at the top travel insurance providers in the space. We reviewed the variety of options offered, coverage limits, benefits, add-ons, flexibility, protocols, claims process, and affordability.

Allianz succeeds in offering many different policies aimed at everyday travelers, business travelers, and athletes. To find the best travel insurance option for you, check out several companies, review the benefits, and compare quotes.

Read more about our travel insurance methodology here.

Allianz is a reputable and well-established travel insurance provider. The company offers various travel insurance policies for individual trips as well as annual plans. Coverage options may include trip interruption, trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, and more. The company has mixed reviews from consumers but has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Nearly all travel insurance policies offered by Allianz cover COVID-19, aside from the OneTrip Rental Car Protector Plan. Through the Allianz Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, policyholders receive additional protections if they need to cancel a trip due to COVID. Unfortunately, while it's available in most plans it's not available in all jurisdictions, so be sure to read the fine print.

While the best plan is one best suited to your needs, Allianz's OneTrip Premier is the most robust policy, with high cancellation and interruption coverage. Additionally, kids 17 and under are included in coverage. This policy also includes unique benefits for athletes and adventurers thanks to sports equipment coverage.

If you need to file a claim, Allianz may require proof of incident in order to receive benefits. In cases of medical issues, you may need to provide a medical receipt or document. In other cases, you may need to provide other documentation for trip cancellation or trip interruption such as a death certificate, police report, or employment letter.

Allianz doesn't cover missed flights exactly but can help cover costs due to trip delays depending on your policy. So if you missed a connecting flight, you may be able to receive funds to recoup costs related to accommodations and transportation.

Travel insurance can offer peace of mind — and financial protection — when you travel. Whether you want minimal coverage for emergencies or are looking for a more comprehensive plan, Allianz Travel Insurance probably has an option that will work for your situation.

CNBC Select breaks down the types of coverage Allianz includes in its policies, the features it offers and other providers you should consider.

Policy highlights

10 travel insurance plans make it possible to customize your coverage. For families, Allianz's OneTrip Prime package covers children age 17 and younger when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

24/7 assistance available

  • Trip cancellation benefits can reimburse your prepaid, nonrefundable trip payments if you have to cancel your trip for one of the covered reasons stated in your plan documents.
  • Limited coverage for risky sports

Allianz Travel Insurance is a global insurance provider. It partners with airlines, travel agencies, resorts, credit card issuers and other companies to offer worldwide travel coverage. The insurer currently offers 10 trip coverage plans, giving travelers plenty of options that range from single-trip plans to plans that cover all your travel for a year.

For example, OneTrip Prime provides trip cancellation/interruption, emergency transportation, baggage loss or delay and other key benefits for a single trip up to 180 days. AllTrips Executive, on the other hand, is a multi-trip plan designed for business travel with higher trip cancellation and interruption limits and coverage for business equipment. You can also opt for OneTrip Rental Car Protector if you need primary car rental coverage against collision, loss and damage.

These plans let you easily tailor your insurance to your situation. Here are the types of coverage that Allianz Travel can include in your plan:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Emergency medical (this covers medical and dental emergencies that happen during your trip)
  • Emergency medical transportation
  • Baggage loss/damage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel delay
  • Travel accident
  • SmartBenefits℠ (this includes automatic and no-receipts payments for trip delays and no-receipts claims for baggage delays)
  • Change fees (this coverage can reimburse you for the fees the airline charges when you have to change the dates of your flight)
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage (with this coverage, you can get reimbursement for frequent flyer mile redeposit fees if your trip is canceled or interrupted)
  • 24/7 hotline assistance
  • Concierge services
  • Rental car collision damage waiver
  • Existing medical condition (this benefit waives the pre-existing medical condition coverage exclusion)

The types and limits of coverage benefits you can get vary by plan.

Many travel cards provide travel insurance benefits . To avoid duplicate coverage, go through your card's terms and conditions and see what your issuer already offers.

One of the features that helped Allianz Travel land a spot on our list of the best travel insurance is the Cancel Anytime benefit. Included with OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans, Cancel Anytime can reimburse 80% of your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs if you have to cancel your trip for just about any unexpected reason.

Additionally, the insurer offers 24/7 global assistance to refer you to a prescreened hospital during your trip.

Policyholders can also use the TravelSmart TM  app and check for flight status updates, the latest travel advisories and restrictions for their destination, local emergency services and hospitals and more. The app allows travelers to pull up their protection plan whenever they need and file a claim online.

As of writing, Allianz Travel doesn't advertise any discounts. That said, discounts aren't as common with this type of coverage, especially compared to home and auto insurance .

Allianz is a large global company offering a wide range of financial products and services. In the U.S., that includes travel insurance, life insurance and business insurance.

Allianz Travel can be a solid choice if you're looking to purchase travel insurance. However, it's always a wise idea to compare multiple options to ensure you're getting a good deal.

For instance, AXA Assistance USA travel insurance is also a good provider. You can pick from three plans with the most affordable one starting at just $16, according to the company's website. The most comprehensive option is the Platinum plan which comes with the option to cancel for any reason.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA offers several travel insurance policies that include travel interruption, trip cancellation, and the option of cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

Travel Guard® Travel Insurance also offers a selection of plans, ranging from last-minute options to an annual travel plan. Or you can request a specialty plan, but you'll need to speak to a representative to do so.

Travel Guard® Travel Insurance

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

With 10 available plans to choose from, Allianz Travel makes it easy to get the right travel insurance coverage for your upcoming trip. Multi-trip plans are also available for those who frequently travel, including for business. Still, we recommend gathering several quotes and comparing plans before you purchase travel insurance. Just like with any financial product, it pays to shop around for this type of coverage.

How We Reviewed Allianz Global Assistance Travel Insurance

9 plans evaluated

When you’re going on a big trip, pre-paying for things like transportation and activities often makes traveling easier. If things don’t go as planned, you could risk losing money. This is where travel insurance comes in handy.

Travel insurance gives you financial security while you’re traveling. In addition to pre-paid activity and transportation reimbursement, travel insurance also covers things like lost luggage and emergency medical care.

If you’re planning a vacation, we recommend purchasing travel insurance for added peace of mind and security. Allianz Global Assistance is one of the leading travel insurance companies that provides a variety of plans and coverage options for domestic and international travelers.

  • The Competition
  • Allianz vs John Hancock

Allianz Global offers a broader variety of policy options than John Hancock . Allianz offers five plans, whereas John Hancock only offers three. However, John Hancock’s policies provide much higher coverage limits than Allianz. If you’re looking for the most protection during your trip, we recommend John Hancock.

On the other hand, if you’re taking a vacation with kids, we recommend Allianz Global over John Hancock. Allianz will insure kids under 17 for free when they travel with a parent or grandparent. Looking at customer service, John Hancock comes out on top. We had a much better experience with John Hancock’s agents and appreciated their extensive knowledge of the plans.

  • Allianz vs Travelex Insurance Services

Overall, Travelex performed better than Allianz Global in several major areas. First, we determined that Travelex is a better option for people who want to customize their plan and their coverage limits. This is one area where Allianz lagged behind competitors.

Despite having only four plans, travelers can get more coverage for longer or more adventurous trips with Travelex than with Allianz. Travelex also offers an adventure sports coverage package that Allianz doesn’t offer. Travelex customers can upgrade their plan with “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage for the most protection. Based on our evaluation, we also thought that Travelex had better customer service than Allianz.

  • The Bottom Line

Overall, Allianz Global is a trustworthy travel insurance provider. The company offers a number of plans and add-on policies that fit a wide range of travelers and vacation types. We also like that Allianz offers annual plans, which is ideal for people who travel multiple times each year. Families traveling together will also benefit from Allianz’s free coverage for kids under 17. However, Allianz didn’t offer the best customer service compared to John Hancock and Travelex. Additionally, Allianz’s insurance plans aren’t very flexible. Unlike Travelex, Allianz customers can’t choose to increase or decrease their coverage limits based on their needs.

Does Allianz Global Assistance cover flight cancellation?

Yes, Allianz Global Assistance covers flight cancellation in certain situations. For example, if you get sick and have to cancel your trip before you leave, Allianz will reimburse you for the airfare fee.

Does Allianz offer cruise insurance?

Yes, Allianz Global does offer cruise insurance. Allianz cruise insurance also covers situations like lost or delayed baggage, trip delay coverage and trip interruption coverage.

Can I get away with just having personal insurance travel?

When you’re going on a trip, getting travel insurance is better than relying on personal insurance alone. If you’re traveling abroad, keep in mind that some insurance companies won’t extend your coverage to overseas countries.

AM Best is a credit rating agency that provides financial strength ratings, which can indicate the likelihood of an insurer paying out claims. Allianz Travel policies are underwritten by two other insurers: BCS Insurance Company and Jefferson Insurance Company. BCS Insurance Company has an A (Excellent) AM Best rating, and Jefferson Insurance Company has an A+ (Superior) rating.

Allianz Travel breaks down its policies into three categories: single-trip, annual/multi-trip, and rental car insurance. If you plan on living abroad for an extended stay, consider health insurance for expats in addition to a long-term travel insurance policy or instead of one.

Single Trip

An Allianz Travel single trip plan only lasts for one trip. The cost depends on where you’re going, the length of the trip, your age, and your trip cost. There are also different plan options based on how much coverage you want.

  • OneTrip Premier: If you want the most protection, OneTrip Premier, Allianz’s top-tier plan, is a good choice. It covers up to $75,000 for emergency medical, $1 million for emergency medical transportation, $2,000 for lost or damaged baggage, $600 for baggage delay, $200,000 for trip cancellation, and $300,000 for trip interruption. It’s the only Allianz Travel plan which covers cancellation due to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) hurricane warning. Additionally, the plan covers trips up to 366 days long.
  • OneTrip Prime: Allianz Travel’s most popular plan, it includes cancellation coverage up to $100,000, emergency medical up to $50,000 per traveler, lost baggage up to $1,000 per traveler, and expenses from trip delays $200 per day, up to $800 total.
  • OneTrip Basic: This plan covers the same categories as OneTrip Prime, but with lower coverage limits: $10,000 for cancellation, $10,000 for emergency medical, and $500 for lost baggage. It’s also missing certain travel perks, like access to Allianz Travel’s concierge service.
  • OneTrip Emergency Medical: With this plan, you are only covered for issues that happen during a trip, like medical emergencies and lost luggage. However, the plan does not provide trip interruption and cancellation coverage.
  • OneTrip Cancellation Plus: This minimal plan only covers the cost of a canceled or interrupted trip, for eligible reasons. It doesn’t pay for medical bills or lost luggage during your trip.

For a 30-year-old to take an eight-day trip to Mexico from New York worth $5,000 and booked around six weeks in advance, OneTrip coverage ranged from $151 (Basic) to $231 (Premier).

Annual/Multi-Trip

These Allianz Travel insurance plans cover all your trips for one year. Each trip can last no more than 45 days (except for Premier which covers trips up to 90 days). What’s covered and coverage limits depend on the plan you choose.

  • AllTrips Premier: Allianz Travel’s most high-end multi-trip plan, it covers trips lasting up to 90 days, versus 45 days on all other multi-trip plans. It expands the coverage limits you get in lower-tier plans. For example, you get up to $15,000 in trip cancellation coverage, and up to $50,000 in emergency medical. The plan also covers everyone in your household, even if they are traveling separately from you.
  • AllTrips Executive: This plan provides more coverage than AllTrips Prime. For example, trip cancellation covers up to $10,000 and emergency medical care covers up to $50,000. This plan also reimburses airline ticket change fees up to $500 per year.
  • AllTrips Prime: The standard multi-trip travel insurance plan covers trip cancellation up to $3,000 per year, emergency medical up to $20,000 per trip, and lost baggage up to $1,000.
  • AllTrips Basic: This is a lower-cost plan that doesn’t include trip interruption or cancellation, but covers things like medical emergencies (up to $20,000), emergency medical transportation (up to $100,000), and lost bags while traveling.

For a 30-year-old taking a trip of up to 45 days from New York, prices ranged from $125 (Basic) to $459 (Executive).

Allianz Travel’s rental car policies cost $11 per day and cover up to $50,000 of damage to a rental car. The plan also includes up to $1,000 in coverage for your lost bags. You can buy rental car insurance as a standalone plan or as an optional add-on to the other Allianz travel insurance plans.

If you have a travel credit card, it may already provide some travel and rental car insurance coverage for purchases made on the card.

Allianz Travel offers customer service primarily by phone. You can call its hotline 24/7 with questions and for assistance with emergencies while traveling. You can also submit questions through an online form.

If you have an Allianz Travel policy, the Allianz Travel website lets you access policy details and start a claim. Allianz Travel also provides a mobile app called TravelSmart that you can use to manage your policy, file claims, and access 24/7 assistance. The app provides information that could be useful for your trip, such as:

  • Updates on flight delays
  • Local emergency numbers
  • A list of pre-screened medical facilities
  • Translation for medical terms in 18 languages

Is Allianz Travel Insurance Right for Me?

Allianz Travel is a solid choice if you’re planning a single trip or multiple trips. The company’s underwriters are financially stable, and Allianz provides multiple options for policies, meaning you’re likely to find one that fits your budget and coverage needs. Allianz Travel can be an especially good fit if you plan on taking many trips over the upcoming year, thanks to its four different multi-trip plan types.

We evaluated more than 30 different travel insurance companies and plans. Major areas of focus included coverage options, claim and policy limits, what’s covered, and typical insurance policy costs.

The biggest focus was on insurance coverage limits and what each policy covers. Cost is important, but a difference of $20 for much better coverage is often negligible. The most important features examined in this review are the ones that make your policy valuable and easy to use if you ever need it.

HONEST Allianz Travel Insurance Review – [Updated 2024]

Planning and preparing for a trip can be fun and exciting. Personally I love flicking through Lonely Planets seeking out those “Must See” places and I even enjoy scouring through forums for insider advice. I relish the challenge of arranging sophisticated logistics and revel in finding bargain flights from London to the ends of the earth.

Indeed, the feeling I get during the days before I start a trip is both exciting and invigorating. In fact, sometimes I wonder whether I’m equally as addicted to this “state of leaving”  as I am to travel itself – they do say that often anticipation is even better than the event itself.

What is far less exciting though, is comparing Travel Insurance policies. There are far too many policies and providers out there with far too many fine print details to scrutinise. Yep finding the best travel insurance is confusing, and finding cheap backpacker insurance can seem impossible. But, to make finding and buying Travel Insurance that bit easier for you, we have tried, tested and reviewed all of the major providers out there.

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Do you need travel insurance, what does travel insurance cover, should i get insurance, who are allianz, allianz travel insurance policies, what’s covered by allianz travel insurance, what’s not covered by allianz travel insurance, who is allianz travel insurance suitable for, who isn’t allianz travel insurance suitable for, how much does allianz travel insurance cost, other travel insurance providers, when should you buy travel insurance, how to make an allianz travel insurance claim, final thoughts on allianz travel insurance.

Today we are going to review Allianz Travel Insurance. I have spent hours going through their policies and breaking them down for you. By the end of this post, you should know whether Allianz is the right travel insurance for you.

It’s important that you take time to look at other good travel insurance providers too. Different providers suit different kinds of travellers. So you may be better suited elsewhere.

allianz travel insurance consumer reviews

Before we begin the Allianz Travel Insurance review, do note that the terms and conditions of insurance policies are subject to changes and are always ultimately based on your individual circumstances. Therefore, it is very important that you read any policy terms and conditions yourself.

Hey you there! Before you delve any further or waste any more valuable time on this Allianz Travel Insurance Review, let me just tell you straight up front that we at The Broke Backpacker no longer use Allianz for our travel insurance needs.

We have nothing against them, we just found other providers more suited to the needs of travellers and backpackers whilst offering VERY competitive quotes.

If you are taking a single trip or going backpacking, we recommend World Nomads Insurance .

Alternatively, if you are a digital nomad working and travelling remotely from all over the world, then SafetyWing Insurance offer some very interesting travel insurance plans.

Ahem – Please note that insurance companies change their policies and product terms fairly regularly. We do our best to keep this review up to date but cannot guarantee that all of the information is 100% correct. Therefore, only use this review as a guide and check all policies yourself. Also note that some of the links in this post are affiliate links.

Do you need travel insurance? Does anybody really need travel insurance ?

After shelling out for flights, visas, and a new backpack, having to find a few more bucks for travel insurance may feel a bit depressing. I mean, all you get is a “policy certificate” AKA a boring 100-page booklet to read. Aren’t there more sexy and fun things to be spending that money on?

After all, most trips, vacations, and odysseys end happily and safely without any ill occurrence. There is no definitive answer to this.

travel insurance

Our team at the Broke Backpacker , we have (collectively) spent more than a century backpacking the globe and we have visited over 100 countries. Most of those trips ended without incident. However, we have also clocked up a fair few mishaps along the way: inflected legs, tropical diseases, broken backs, and even gunpoint robberies.

These incidents were all bad enough in themselves, leaving physical and mental scars. Thankfully though, we were all insured at the time. This meant that we were spared the further trauma of paying out thousands in medical bills or replacing technologies.

Basically, insurance is one of those things that most people never actually need. But the ones who do are very lucky to have it.

So now, you get the picture: travel insurance is essential when it comes to staying safe on the road . But is Allianz travel insurance right for you? Or do other travel insurance options suit you?

So let’s take a look. Here are some things good travel insurance plans help with, and where you would be without them.

Lost Luggage

Luggage gets lost both on planes and in airports. It shouldn’t happen, but it sure as hell does.

That in itself is bad enough but replacing all your essential travel gear will cost. Any decent travel insurance policy usually covers lost luggage, usually up to at least $1000.

allianz travel insurance consumer reviews

In fact, the aviation watchdog states that 5.73 items of luggage are lost for every 1000 passengers. That means that if you take 10 flights, then there is a 5% chance of your luggage getting lost forever. Some airports and airlines lose more baggage than others but all of them are equally as obtuse and obstructive when it comes to trying to make a claim.

Lost luggage can ruin your whole trip. I mean, imagine you head to Iceland and they lose all your cold weather gear?!

Medical Bills

Foreign medical care costs can be very high. A friend of mine was once hospitalised while backpacking in Costa Rica and ran up bills in excess of $10,000.

More recently he spent 1 night in a Thai hospital, was billed $1,000 and his passport was used as a ransom (that boy has no luck. Maybe he should stay at home?) . Personally, I don’t have $10,000 to pay to Costa Rican Doctors, but I do have maybe $50 to buy myself a travel insurance policy.

allianz travel insurance consumer reviews

If you come from Europe, the cost of medical care in some parts of the world is quite a revelation. If you’re in the US, then you already know all about health extortion. But do remember, your domestic health insurance will most probably not cover you outside of the US.

Accidents happen (and without warning…) and ill health can strike any of us down at any time, anywhere. In fact, if you have experienced the driving or the hygiene standards in India, you’ll already know that you are at high risk of coming to some harm out on the road.

Trip Interruption Coverage

Trip interruption comes in all shapes and sizes. Claiming for flight delays or cancellations is annoying – and in the end, nothing’s guaranteed.

Every year a few airlines or travel agents go out of business leaving passengers stranded. Booking flights home at short notice is costly.

Not getting home on time on the other hand, can mean getting sacked from your job – ouch. If you have to stay a few more nights at your destination waiting for a flight home, then that can also stretch a maxed-out travel budget.

Having trip cancellation and interruption coverage can mean the difference between desperately raiding your overdraft or getting a few extra days of vacation, free of charge.

Theft Coverage

Sadly, tourists are a target for thieves in many parts of the world. Our team have been robbed with guns while backpacking South America . And I know people whose diamond jewellery and MacBooks were burgled from hotels.

Being robbed is scary. But theft coverage makes it suck a little less when you don’t have to fork out for your stolen iPhone.

Repatriation

In the unlikely event of your demise, your travel insurance can cover the cost of repatriation or sending your body home. The costs of this can otherwise run into several thousands of dollars.

Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them. And yet, it does happen.

Furthermore, the law of averages dictates that if you travel enough, something, somewhere will eventually go wrong. Just like you should always look twice before crossing the road, and always wear your helmet before riding a bike, you really should get comprehensive travel insurance.

By the way, some countries require you to obtain insurance before even letting you enter. Imagine being turned back at the airport for the sake of a few quid?! I personally never leave home without first obtaining travel insurance plans from either World Nomads or SafetyWing.

If you’re reading this, then I guess you decided that you do need travel insurance. Yay! Welcome to the world of sensible adults (AKA accepting your own mortality and the fact that you have no control whatsoever over the universe, despite whatever bullshit “The Secret” may have told you).

Allianz travel insurance is perhaps one of the biggest insurance companies in the world. They have been trading for over 120 years and they have offices across the globe.

Though travel Insurance is by no means Allianz’s primary focus or modus operandi. But this is not a bad thing. Note that even “specialist travel insurers” are often, in fact, brands or shop fronts backed by big insurance companies like Allianz.

Allianz

They are governed by the Financial Services regulators in pretty much every national market they trade in. This means that if you have a problem with them, you can squeal on them and have your case reviewed independently and fairly by an adjudicator free of charge.

Now that the introductions are out of the way, let’s take a look at the individual travel insurance policies they offer.

Allianz are a major financial service provider and as such, they offer different coverage options, policies and plans aimed at different travellers. Let’s quickly run through them.

Firstly, Allianz travel insurance offer travellers 2 main types of policy. Within these coverage types are little variations. The main policy types are OneTrip and AllTrips .

Within both the OneTrip and AllTrips umbrellas are 3 variations : Basic, Prime, Premier . These vary depending on how much cover you want and how much you want to pay.

As the name kind of suggests, OneTrip covers one single, specific trip generally with a fixed start and end date.

AllTrips covers any and all trips that you make in a one-year period. This annual plan runs from the date you take out the policy, or a date of your choosing, and lasts for 365 days (or 366 in a leap year) .

You can take an unlimited number of trips in the year and an unlimited number of days travelling. Do be sure that all your chosen destinations are covered by the annual travel insurance policy though, otherwise, you may need to obtain additional cover.

OneTrip Basic Plan

This travel insurance policy covers all travel insurance basics such as medical coverage, trip cancellation and lost luggage. Look at it as the entry-level “classic cover” if you like.

The plan may be able to offer;

  • Emergency Medical and Emergency Dental Coverage up to $10,000 and $50,000 for Medical Evacuation. These amounts may seem high but are not enough if you need to be airlifted home from an accident, for example.
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage Coverage up to $500 and $200 for Delayed Baggage. Now, $500 may be enough for your baggage depending on how expensive your clothes are, and whether you pack any specialist equipment. However, a solid travel backpack is usually worth around $200.
  • Trip Cancellation Cover up to $100,00. One of the best features of the OneTrip Basic plan is that Allianz may be able to reimburse the full cost of your trip if you need to cancel early. However, the reason for cancellation needs to be one of Allianz Global Assistance’s list of acceptable cancellation reasons – not because you got bored or changed your mind.

This policy is a good all-rounder and ideal for travellers on a budget . However, it does have some limitations.

Some of the Allianz travel insurance OneTrip basic coverage is a bit on the tight side. Furthermore, OneTrip Basic plan does not include coverage for missed connections or airline change fees. There are also relatively fewer accepted reasons for claiming on the trip cancellation clause.

OneTrip Prime Plan

Broadly speaking, Allianz OneTrip prime plan is more or less the same as the basic – with increased coverage amounts. The policy may be able to offer;

  • Emergency Medical Coverage and Dental Coverage up to $25,000 worth of and $500,000 worth of emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Lost and Stolen Baggage Cover up to $1,000 which should cover most people’s hold luggage. However, the per-item max is $500. So if you pack your $8000 top-quality travel camera , you will only get $500 back for it. It also includes Baggage Delay Costs of up to $300.
  • Missed Connection Coverage up to $800.
  • Airline Change Fees up to $250.

OneTrip Premier Plan

In case you need a bit more on top of that, then we have the OneTrip Premier Plan. The Allianz OneTrip Premier policy is essentially the Prime with even higher coverage amounts. OneTrip Premier may be able to offer cover to;

  • Emergency Medical and Dental Coverage of up to $25,000 to $50,000.
  • Emergency Evacuation Coverage also increases to $1,000,000. With international evacuation averaging around $100,000, this amount is more than adequate to cover your transportation back home.
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage up $2,000. However, like with the OneTrip Prime plan, you can only claim a maximum of $500 per item (up to $2,000 in total). $600 in Baggage Delay.
  • Travel Delay coverage up to $1,600.
  • Missed Connection Coverage up to $1,600.

Other Allianz OneTrip Options & Offshoots

In case that wasn’t choice enough for you, Allianz also offers 2 offshoots of their OneTrip policy. If you like, look at them as the highly specialised cousins of the OneTrip family.

OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan

OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan is definitely Allianz’s budget policy. With this plan, you are only covered against trip cancellation, interruptions, and delays. Medical coverage, medical transportation, and baggage loss are not included.

Personally, I would only consider this policy if (1) you are not checking luggage (2) you have medical coverage elsewhere. For example, this may be OK if you are an EU citizen taking a short break to another EU country where you only have your trusty carry-on luggage and an EU emergency healthcare card.

OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan

This policy is great for travellers who only want medical coverage on one single trip. It provides up to £50,00 in emergency medical coverage and $250,000 in emergency medical transportation coverage.

Remember that this plan only offers protection for medical expenses. If you are robbed, your cuts and bruises are covered but your stolen phone is not. If the airline loses your luggage it is not covered and neither is heartbreak. Trip cancellation coverage is also not included.

This plan is, therefore, for anybody whose sole and only concern is medical coverage.

Remember, the OneTrip policies cover one specific trip. The AllTrips policies we are going to detail below cover long, or multiple trips within a one-year period.

Note that AllTrips policies may also be able to offer rental car coverage for damage as well as dismemberment cover. On the flip side, trip cancellation coverage is either non-existent or limited.

AllTrips Basic Plan

The AllTrips basic may be able to offer coverage for the “classic” issues on multiple trips within a one-year period. Let’s see those numbers.

  • Emergency Medical Coverage of $20,000,00 and $100,000 in Emergency Evacuation Coverage. Note that $20,00 on medical emergencies may still be a little on the low side in the event you get very sick in an expensive part of the world such as the US.
  • Lost/Stolen or Damaged Baggage up to $1,000. Yes, this may be able to cover most checked bags but remember the $500 max item clause. Baggage Delay is offered up to $200 and then $300 for trip delay.
  • Rental Car Damage Coverage up to $45,000. Note that additional premiums may apply.

Note that the AllTrips Basic plan does not come with Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage. Remember that means you will not be reimbursed in case you are unable to go on your trip!

AllTrips Prime

As you probably guessed, AllTrips Prime is more or less the same as the basic package with some increased coverage amounts. The policy may be able to offer;

  • Emergency Medical Coverage of $20,000,00 and $100,000 in Emergency Transportation Coverage.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage up to $2,000.00. Remember that the reason for cancellation needs to be one of Allianz Global Assistance’s list of acceptable cancellation reasons.
  • Lost/Stolen or Damaged Baggage up to $1,000 and $200 for Baggage Delay.
  • Trip Delays up to $300.

AllTrips Premier

If you want even more coverage, then we have AllTrips Premier. The Allianz AllTrips Premier policy is basically the Prime one with even higher coverage amounts. AllTrips Primer may be able to cover;

  • Emergency Medical Coverage of $50,000,00 and $500,000 in Emergency Transportation Coverage.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage up to $2,000.00.
  • Trip Delays Coverage of up to $1,500.00.
  • Dismemberment and travel accident up to $50,000 if you lose a limb or your eyesight when travelling.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

We’re now going to drill down and look at the various things that may be covered by Allianz travel insurance. Remember that some of these are covered by some policy types but not others, and note that coverage amounts and excess’ also vary depending on the exact Allianz policy type.

best travel insurance

Emergency Medical Coverage

Got food poisoning in Delhi? Got hit by a moped in Bangkok? Or maybe you just slipped in the shower and broke your wrist in Madrid?

These things can, and do, happen and will all require emergency medical care. Being sick, infirm, and unable to make TikToks is bad enough as it is, so the last thing you want is a hefty medical bill which you have to pay out of your own pocket.

Emergency accident and sickness coverage is quite likely the most important aspect of travel insurance plans.

Emergency Transportation

Emergency Medical Evacuation is when you need to be sent to your home country, or another country, for further or continued medical treatment, and are too sick to travel home normally as a regular passenger. For example – if you are stuck in a hospital bed on a drip in a leg cast.

Trip Cancellation

Reimburses for prepaid, non-refundable cancellation charges if you must cancel your trip (after the effective date of your insurance plan) due to covered sickness, accidental injury, or death of you, a family member or travelling companion; inclement weather, unforeseen natural disaster at home or at your destination, strike, or other covered reasons.

Trip Interruption

Trip Interruption Coverage includes the same stipulations as listed above in “Trip Cancellation”. It includes the caveat of covering the cost of accommodation to you if you are delayed.

Baggage Coverage for Loss/Damage

Being compensated for baggage loss of lost personal gear is likely the second most important aspect of your insurance. This is one of the most common reasons file a claim on your travel insurance.

This covers reimbursement for loss, theft, or damage incurred during the trip. It can be applied to all personal items that were lost, stolen, or else accidentally blown off the roof of a chicken bus travelling at top speed.

Baggage Delay

In the event your checked baggage is delayed or misplaced by the air carrier (for more than 12 hours) , you can claim reimbursement for any necessary items you need to purchase until your bag arrives. This will typically mean toiletries but may even mean some travel clothes if you can demonstrate the purchase is essential.

Trip Delay cover protects you when you’re unable to reach your destination on time due to circumstances beyond your control. If your airline cancels your flight due to a technical fault, Allianz travel insurance will reimburse you for any meals, transportation, or accommodation costs you incurred as a result. Note that delays of less than 6 hours are not covered.

Change Fee Coverage

Have you ever tried to change or vary a flight date or add or remove a passenger?! The fees can be insanely high. This is where Change Fee coverage comes in. If you have the AllTrips Executive, OneTrip Prime plan or OneTrip Premier plan, you can claim up to $500 to cover the cost of the airline change fee.

Travel Accident Coverage

If you are in an accident, you may be entitled to claim a compensation payment in addition to your medical/repatriation costs. This is usually reserved for loss of limb/eyesight type scenarios and you can’t claim for whiplash or emotional trauma from falling from a donkey!

The Travel Accident Coverage is also payable to your family in the event of your death.

Rental Car Damage and Theft Coverage

The AllTrips travel insurance polices also include rental car coverage. This can often prove considerably cheaper than obtaining insurance direct from the rental car provider.

If you are resident in the US, this feature may not be available to you. For clarity, we suggest you speak with Allianz travel insurance directly.

There are some notable omissions from Allianz’s cover. Let’s take a look at them.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have a pre-existing medical condition which causes you problems on your trip, it is not covered under the Allianz policies. This is fairly common amongst insurers. It is important that you do declare any pre-existing conditions when taking the policy out.

If you do have a pre-existing medical condition, then you may be very interested to hear that SafetyWing can offer full coverage for PEMCs in their policies.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

Extreme Sports

Allianz Travel Insurance does not any kind of adrenaline sport such as Quad Biking and Parachuting. The lack of coverage for extreme or adventure actives is one of the many reasons why we now prefer World Nomads. To get full details of the kind of activities World Nomads can offer coverage for, head over to their site and get a tailer made quote.

Is Turkey safe to travel for families?

So as you can see, Allianz Global Assistance offers a lot of different policy types for a lot of different people. Allianz Travel Insurance maybe suitable for the following kinds of travellers;

  • Annual Travellers – With the Allianz annual plan, you may be covered for a whole rotative journey around the sun, no matter how many times you travel! Annual plans are great for frequent and long-term travellers to save you money in the long run. On the other hand, though, SafetyWing offers a month-by-month policy which you can stop and start depending on how much you travel; this may prove to be more cost-effective.
  • Senior/Ageing Travellers –  Allianz travel insurance policyholders are among the best senior travel insurances . They have no age limit. Believe us, not all insurers offer this and we have a LOT of queries from over 65’s & over 70’s who have struggled to find insurance elsewhere.
  • Travelling Families –  Allianz travel insurance policies may allow children under the age of 17 to travel with their parents for free, on selected plans. This is great for families with kids. My earliest travel memory is of a Spanish ER department, my parents were glad they had me on their policy. Otherwise my foot would still be bleeding 33 years later!

Around The World Backpackers best hostels in Christchurch

Whilst they do offer a myriad of different plans to cover most travellers types, Allianz is perhaps not the ideal travel insurance company for absolutely everybody out there.

  • Adventure Travellers –  Allianz Travel Insurance does not offer protection for extreme activity or sport of any kind! If you plan on doing any dangerous, adrenaline-type activities, then perhaps consider World Nomads who can offer coverage for over 201 different extreme sports. SafetyWing are also rapidly extending their extreme coverage.
  • Travellers Wanting High Medical Coverage –  We usually recommend travelling with at least $100,000 of emergency medical coverage. If you come down with a severe illness or are mangled by a badger, you might be stuck with thousands of dollars in medical bills so need to be prepared. World Nomads do offer $100,000 in medical emergency cover.
  • Corporation Haters –  Allianz are a major international finance company and we know some of you prefer not to deal with such organisations. That’s a perfectly legitimate point of view. However, remember that even a lot of “boutique” insurers are in fact ultimately shop fronts for big insurers such as Zurich, Lloyds, or even Allianz. In fact, all some boutique firms do is sell you the illusion of dealing with a small firm and charge you a hefty commission for the privilege.

So now we know the details, the next burning question is how much does Allianz Travel Insurance cost?

Well actually, it’s very difficult to say. The pricing details vary depending on a wide range of factors such as your age, location, your trip plans, if you have a pre-existing medical condition, and numerous other factors that only the gods of insurance can compute. It’s worth it to get in there and check yourself.

So, now, let’s talk about our trusty travel insurance plans for backpackers.

World Nomads

World Nomads offers coverage for backpackers and adventure trailers. They are one of our favourite travel insurance providers and we have used them for years.

Unlike Allianz travel insurance, World Nomads are a travel insurer with a focus on backpackers.

World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads offer 2 separate plans depending on how much cover you want and what exactly you intend to do. World Nomads can also offer trip cancellation coverage, electronic gadget, and theft coverage in the policies.

Word Nomads can cover over 140 countries (but not Pakistan which is a shame for us) . They can also cover a wide range of adventure stuff and extreme sports like mountaineering which Allianz travel insurance do not.

However, they do not offer home country cover and do not offer open-ended cover. If you are not planning on doing any adventure stuff though, then you may find World Nomads to be a bit expensive.

SafetyWing are a relatively new player on the scene. They are founded by travellers, for travellers, and their primary target is for those travelling as a digital nomad : people like me who move around the world working from our laptops. We can go many years without ever going “home” and SafetyWing recognises this and can offer open-ended cover.

What we LOVE about SafetyWing is that their insurance operates like a monthly subscription that you can stop and start as and when you need it. They are also one of the few providers who may be able to cover some pre-existing conditions and provide assistance with “routine” health stuff.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

guy sitting on a cliff edge with computer

By this point, you may well know which travel insurance is best for you. Maybe it’s Allianz travel insurance, or maybe it’s one of the others.

The question now then is, when should you buy travel insurance?

You can buy travel insurance up until the start date of your trip for most insurers. Many will not cover a trip that has already begun – with the exception of World Nomads and SafetyWing.

Note : if you ever do make a claim, you may well be asked to provide evidence of the start date. So I do not recommend trying to hoodwink insurers. Be totally honest or it will come back on you.

However, in our experience, the earlier you book your travel insurance, the better. This is for a number of reasons:

  • Things sometimes go wrong before the trip even starts. For example, if the airline goes bust. This happens to 1000s of people every year. Or what if you get very sick a week before flying and have to cancel?! If you have the right travel insurance in place, your insurer may cover you in these scenarios.
  • The vast majority of policies include a cooling off period . This is a period of time (usually 28 days) when you can cancel the policy and get all of your money back. We suggest using the cooling period to read through the policy documents and ensure that the cover fully meets your needs. Upon a closer look, if it does not suit you, you have time to contact the insurer and amend the policy, or cancel it and obtain more suitable travel insurance.

Personally, I usually book my travel insurance the very same day I book my flight. The only exception is if I already have long term or an annual plan. In these scenarios, instead, be sure to check the last date on your annual/long-term cover and make sure it covers your whole trip.

Is the food in Costa Rica safe?

First up, it is unlikely you will ever need to make a travel insurance claim. Yipee!

In case you do though, you will be very pleased to hear that the process is pretty straightforward as long as you are dealing with a reputable company. If you are not then it may be a lot harder.

To initiate a travel insurance claim, all you need to do is contact (call) Allianz Global Assistance and chat with their 24-hour multilingual staff. You should do this as soon as possible or as soon as you know you will need to make a claim .

You will need to tell them about your claim including details of what has gone wrong, and what the damage seems to be. You can also initiate the process online by signing into your account.

If you are claiming lost or stolen items, you will need to write up a formal sworn statement of events, detailing what happened and what was lost. You will also need to have an official police report made up – it is highly important that you obtain this even if it means paying a fee/bribe or hassling the police to do it. Try to get it in both the native language and in English if possible.

The Insurance company may contact you to discuss your claim further. You may even be subjected to a an anti-fraud interview and your call may even be run through voice detection software designed to spot deceit! However, you have nothing to worry about if your claim is legitimate and in order.

It is very helpful to get all of your receipts and invoices together first and submit all expenses at once. Do keep copies of every expense, bill, invoice, and report as you will need to provide these to the claims team. They may pay out small amounts without a bill, but in the case of extra hotels, flights, or electronics, the rule is usually “no proof = no payment”.

After that is sorted, you upload all of your information and documents, review the claim and submit. The Allianz team will get cracking and stay in contact with you throughout this process. Note that resolution time does vary from case to case. It may be days, weeks, or sometimes months depending on the details of your claim.

I hope you found this Allianz Travel Insurance Review to be informative – it certainly took a lot of work on our part to put it together! Comprehensive travel insurance is important to safe travel and you need to carefully choose the best provider for your needs.

We really care about the safety of our readers. That’s why we do recommend travel insurance so strongly. We’ve seen ourselves what can go wrong – and we wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

So check for trip interruption coverage, get your gadgets covered, but most importantly, make sure any potential medical expenses are covered, especially emergency medical expenses. Shop around different providers to find the right one for you. Once again, we wish you an awesome and safe trip!

Brutally HONEST Allianz Travel Insurance Review – [Updated 2023] Pinterest Image

Share or save this post

promotional sidebar image for booking.com

The author did a very nice job explaining the different types of insurance Allianz offers. But, until you have experienced their VERY POOR customer service and actual reimbursement procedures, you will not have the complete Allianz story.

I would never use Allianz Global Assistance for your trip insurance needs During a Viking River Cruise June, 2023, my husband came down with COVID. VIKING handled their end of any claims and taking care of us beautifully, BUT Allianz Global Assistance was a completely different story. We had Trip Interruption insurance (which included coming down with COVID) and trying to get reimbursement for all our medical expenses and a post trip to Amsterdam we had planned (not with Viking, but through our travel agent) has been one of the most frustrating ordeals I have ever dealt with. We are asking for approximately a $2,000 reimbursement and we have received $300.

If you need to file a claim, here is what you can expect after you complete the on-line claim form on Allianz’s website : 1. They will tell you they can’t read your receipts (even though you can read them on the email you send or they are PDFs from Viking or your TA). One Allianz customer service rep (probably the 7th person I talked to), told me to download a $50 app that makes receipts readable, which I did, and they still couldn’t read them. I finally snail-mailed copies of the receipts and they still declined 75% of them. 2. Phone calls with wait times of over an hour. This has happened to me 10+ times (not just a random occurrence), and I have tried all times of the day – same thing. 3. When you do talk to a rep, the call will always, and I mean always, disconnect before the issue is handled.

I could go on and on, but bottom line, I will NEVER use Allianz again or recommend them to anyone. We are out $2,000 + $1,000 we paid for the Trip Insurance. It is a big deal, but I can’t imagine if we had to rely on Allianz for the total trip reimbursement. Thank goodness Viking stepped up and provided the level of customer service they did.

Of course, we are aware that some customers sometimes have insurance claims denied. We also appreciate that others have bad customer service experiences with all kinds of different companies.

However are not privy to the finer details of your situation, and Allianz are not here to put across their side of the story either – furthermore this is not really the legitimate forum to air complaints about them. Still in the interest of openness and transparency we will let your comment stand.

Best of luck with your next trip.

Yes agreed – your statement about Allianz not offering unlimited medical cover is complete BS and misleading to readers. Are you paid to promote World Nomads Insurance? Please provide full disclosure to your readers.

I have just rechecked the Allianz policy information available on their website and what we have said appears to remain correct. If you feel we have missed something then please elaborate.

As for World Nomads, we have made it clear that some of the links in this post are affiliated.

Hi there, I found your article very informative, but I just wanted to make a couple of corrections. Im not affiliated with Allianz, but Ive been researching which insurance to buy and they have provided me with a quote and their PDS, which Ive read in full. The amounts that Allianz offers for overseas emergency assistance and overseas medical and hospital expenses under their comprehensive plan are both unlimited, and they do offer insurance for pre-existing medical conditions, you just have to pay an additional premium.

Allianz Travel Insurance Summary

Allianz opening price point plans offer travelers the most commonly purchased coverage options. Trip cancellation and interruption services are offered even under its OneTrip Cancellation Plus, the company's entry level offering. Trips are insured up to their full purchase price. The company extends protection to children under 17 when accompanied by a paying adult with no additional cost on their OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans.

Allianz offers customers a full refund if coverage is cancelled within fifteen days of purchase.

Allianz’s satisfied customers describe how much they appreciate the company’s help with serious overseas medical situations. Negative comments generally come from people unhappy because the company’s contract didn’t apply to their claims. Those comments reinforce the importance of reading and understanding insurance contracts before purchasing them. This is particularly important in less-regulated insurance markets (such as travel insurance) where there is no “standard” policy.

Earning 4.1 out of 5 stars , our expert reviewers think Allianz is a great choice for international travel insurance.

Our Thoughts on Allianz Travel Insurance

We at the MarketWatch Guides team awarded Allianz Travel Insurance 4.1 out of 5 stars based on our provider review methodology. Named our pick for concierge services, Allianz offers 24/7 travel assistance through a multilingual team, which can help policyholders with travel and coverage issues while abroad. This service includes help with hotel and flight re-bookings, stolen travel documents, medical care arrangements and more.

Allianz scored highly in the customer service and reviews section of our methodology. Along with 24-hour assistance and concierge services, it offers a mobile app and various ways to file a claim, according to our research. However, Allianz does not offer cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage with any of its plans, an add-on that many other companies we’ve reviewed feature. It’s also one of the pricier providers we’ve gathered quotes for, so if you’re looking for a budget plan, Allianz may not be a good fit.

According to our survey of 1,000 people who have purchased travel insurance, 16% went with Allianz. Of those customers, 93% said travel insurance is worth the cost, with most citing peace of mind or financial protection as the reason.

Pros and Cons

How allianz scored in our methodology.

When we analyzed Allianz using our travel insurance ratings methodology, the company scored 4.1 out of 5 stars . The provider lost points in all categories except for coverage details and customer service and reviews and was awarded zero points for not offering cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

Allianz vs. Generali Global Assistance

Generali Global Assistance’s Premium plan costs slightly less than Allianz’s OneTrip Premier plan while providing more than double the medical expense coverage. Allianz Customer Reviews

Our research team considers customer reviews and ratings when formulating a company's overall score. At the time of this review, Allianz held a 4.4 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot. To better understand what consumers like and dislike about Allianz, we read the most recent customer reviews featured on Trustpilot.

What Customers Like

  • Excellent customer service: Several customers were impressed with the company’s kind, helpful and professional customer service agents. This reviewer , in particular, stated that their local travel agent highly recommended the company.
  • Quick claims processing: Many reviewers noted an immediate company response to their claims, along with a timely review and reimbursement.
  • Easy enrollment process: New policyholders, such as this one , praised Allianz’s easy and straightforward enrollment process when purchasing a policy.

What Customers Don’t Like

  • Frustrating claims experience: While many customers were pleased with their claims experience, some reviewers spoke of waiting months to receive reimbursement.
  • Denial of claims: Several customers noted they had all the proper documents for a claim as outlined in their policy terms, yet were still denied.
  • Confusion around payment: Several policyholders noted that they requested direct deposit for claims payment and received a check in the mail instead.

We reached out to Allianz for comment on its negative customer reviews and received a response from Daniel Durazo, director of external communications for Allianz Partners USA.

“Allianz Travel Insurance is a customer-focused insurance company that works hard to provide products and services that meet the changing needs of consumers,” he said. “The company is proud of its 4.4 rating on Trustpilot and has received multiple awards for outstanding customer service. While insurance claims do take some time to process, the average time from claim receipt to approval is 17 days, and half of all claims are approved within six days.”

  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

False Information

They gave me false information about my claim when I made a phone call. The personal told me my claim was approved and my payment reimbursement details will be sent in about 3 days. Then, I called the next day to confirm and the supervisor said it was never approved that it was false information. They told me they couldn’t do anything and I had to wait 10 business for my claim.

Dear Christina, Thank you for posting on Trustpilot and providing me with the opportunity to respond to your comment. I'm sorry that the insurance didn't provide you with the coverage you had hoped it would. As our travel insurance products are designed to cover a broad range of common mishaps that travelers may experience, they don't cover every situation. Furthermore, benefits vary based on the type of plan you purchased and the state where you live. That’s why you have a free look period after purchase to review the policy to make sure it meets your needs. If during the review period, you feel the policy isn’t what you’re looking for, you can cancel your policy and receive a full refund. We regret that this plan didn't meet your needs for this trip, and we hope that you'll allow us to work more closely with you on your future travel plans so that we can help you determine the best plan for you. Sincerely, Alex T. Social Care US

WAS Discovery Travel Insurance Review: Features, Pros and Cons

Updated: Apr 17, 2024, 9:08am

The Discovery Plan from WAS Travel Insurance could be a good choice for Aussies looking for a no-frills travel insurance policy. However, it only offers a number of standard features of comprehensive policies as optional add-ons and that can make the policy much more expensive than first meets the eye. Regardless, its unlimited medical cover, high age limit of 99 years, and positive customer reviews makes it a viable option for those in the market for a medically focused, no-frills travel insurance policy.

Wise And Silent Travel Insurance, known as WAS, is a Brisbane-based travel insurance company that offers “tailored coverage” to its customers. This tailoring differs from the standard comprehensive travel insurance policies on the market, which usually have a set minimum for standard inclusions for policies, such as lost luggage cover and cancellations.

WAS Travel Insurance is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance Pty Ltd, an Australian insurance company based in Newcastle. While WAS isn’t listed on ProductReview, it has scored a 4.7 star review on TrustPilot from an albeit small number of 39 customer reviews.

Customers highlighted WAS’ staff communication, the ease of applying for coverage, and a “smooth and efficient” claims process.

WAS offers two types of plans, Covid Essentials and Discovery Plan. For the purpose of this review, we analysed the comprehensive option, the Discovery Plan.

As stated, WAS Travel Insurance works a little differently to most travel insurers. Its comprehensive policy is known as the ‘Discovery Plan’, which is available to those aged up to 99 years old and includes unlimited medical in its base cover.

For families travelling together, it’s important to note that children can be added to the policy at a lower rate, but they are not included within a parent/guardians policy as is the industry norm.

Once you start to add to the base cover, WAS Travel Insurance becomes even more complex, with only a handful of medical outcomes covered as standard and far more classified as optional.

For example, credit card fraud is not covered as a standard inclusion; instead, unauthorised use of credit cards can be covered as part of luggage and personal effects, should the policyholder choose to take out this optional extra. Personal liability is not covered automatically, but needs to be selected for coverage up to $2.5 million.

Any trip cancellations are only covered up to the amount chosen by the customer (ranging from $1,000 to $40,000 per customer) and travel delays are covered as optional extras, up to $2,000 per customer. Delays are reimbursed at a rate of $50 per six hours, which is below the industry standard of $200 for every six hours, however no excess applies to these claims. (For missed flight connections, these are only covered should the policyholder choose to add travel interruption cover to their plan.

Rental vehicle excess is also an optional add-on, with the maximum cover of $6,000 for those looking to hire a car during their holiday. In many policies this is covered as standard and does not require the traveller to add it as an optional extra.

Lost Luggage

When it comes to lost luggage, those with WAS Discovery Travel Insurance will need to choose it as an add-on as they are not automatically covered. The lowest option is $1000, while the highest is $10,000 (per traveller).

WAS will only cover an individual item to a limit of $1,000.

WAS Travel Insurance include unlimited medical cover within its comprehensive policy, which extends to additional expenses such as transportation to a medical facility or, in the necessary event, back to Australia.

There is also cover for a medical companion to stay with you during treatment and/or necessary medical-related travel, even if they themselves are not listed on your policy.

Certain pre-existing conditions are also covered if they meet the necessary criteria. The 44 automatically covered conditions include anxiety and depression, diabetes, sleep apnoea and many more.

Other conditions outside of the pre-existing conditions list will not be covered by WAS Travel Insurance.

Covid-19 is included in the unlimited medical cover, which is explained in further depth below.

Is Dental Cover Included?

Dental cover is included in the WAS Travel Insurance Discovery Plan, but not under the unlimited medical expenses. Instead, there is up to $2,000 covered for emergency dental treatment, which is more generous than most insurance policies, which generally top put at $1,000.

Yes, WAS Travel Insurance includes Covid-19 medical expenses within its unlimited medical coverage. It also includes cancellations related to Covid-19, however, that is dependent on how much cancellation cover the policyholder requests.

What About Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is covered by WAS Travel Insurance there are unexpected serious complications of pregnancy occuring:

  • Up to the 24th week of pregnancy if you’re pregnant with a single child; or
  • Up to the 19th week of pregnancy if you’re pregnant with twins or multiple children.

The exclusions include childbirth; the healthcare of a newborn child; pregnancies with existing complications; or pregnancies in which the person has previously had complications with previous pregnancies.

What About Sports and Activities?

WAS covers a range of sports and activities, however, rather than specifying what is covered, it provides a list of the excluded activities being:

  • Snow sports;
  • Motorcycle or moped riding;
  • Racing (except on foot);
  • Polo playing;
  • Mountain climbing requiring the use of equipment such as pick-axes, anchors, bolts, crampons, carabiners, lead or top-rope anchoring or other specialist equipment;

  • Professional sports (including training or practice);
  • Parachuting, hang-gliding or paragliding; or
  • Scuba diving, unless you hold an open water diving certificate or diving with a qualified diving instructor

However, policyholders can choose to add additional adventure packs—snow, motor and cruise—which will then cover them for those sports.

WAS Travel Insurance prides itself on offering budget-friendly insurance policies to Australians; however, the cost of a policy with WAS isn’t as clear cut as many others—largely due to the many different inclusions that one needs to opt-in to.

Forbes Advisor Australia has run quotes against two of our top picks of travel insurance providers for Australians— Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz Travel Insurance —to compare the prices of WAS Travel Insurance when opting-in for a level of cover similar to what these two competitors offer automatically.

As Bali is a top destination for many Aussies, the data below is based on a 28-year-old Australian travelling to Indonesia for a week.

Related: A Guide To Travel Insurance For Bali

This analysis does not include other additional costs that would need to be considered, including sports cover, children travelling, pre-existing medical conditions and so on.

As you can see from the table above, opting in for the same level of cover that is offered as standard by competitors makes the WAS Travel Insurance policy the most expensive of the three.

It’s important to note that policy prices for travel insurance will change for a range of factors, including age, destination, length of trip and any specific needs required by the traveller. The above data is to be used as a guide only.

From the limited reviews online, WAS’ customer service staff members have been hailed as being “very patient and helpful”, with their knowledge “making the experience [of submitting a claim] much less stressful”.

WAS can be contacted by phone or email, with different email addresses and phone numbers unique to the service required (emergency assistance, claims, or general enquiries). The full list can be found online here .

Customers can also submit a form online to be emailed back, and are able to submit claims online or over the phone.

WAS may be a risky choice for some customers who choose to opt-out of the optional extra cover for the sake of saving money and end up being under-insured. Some travellers may not realise the importance of personal liability insurance and fail to select it, which could land them in hot water if an accident was to occur overseas. As a comparison, most other insurers include personal liability insurance as standard in their comprehensive policy: Travel Insurance Direct offers $2.5 million in personal liability, while Allianz offers $5 million—with caveats around snow and adventure packs.

Nevertheless, WAS may be attractive to budget travellers who are happy with a no-frills policy, but want to ensure they’re covered for the basics of medical and dental.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is was travel insurance good.

WAS Travel Insurance did not make Forbes Advisor Australia’s top picks for comprehensive travel insurance , but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good option for Aussies looking for international cover. The comprehensive policy offered by WAS is a build-your-own type of plan, meaning it is tailored to the customer individually in terms of cancellation cover, luggage cover, rental car excess and more.

It may be suitable for budget-conscious travellers looking for a no-frills policy that is focused on medical and dental. However, it’s worth noting that when compared to other insurers on the market, WAS ended up being more expensive once the add-ons were included in the quote.

From 38 customer reviews on TrustPilot, WAS received a rating of 4.7 stars.

What policies does WAS Travel Insurance offer?

WAS Travel Insurance offers two policies: Covid Essentials and Discovery. The Discovery Plan is what would be considered its ‘comprehensive’ offering, considering it allows customers to tailor the plan to suit their needs.

How much does WAS Travel Insurance cost?

The cost of WAS Travel Insurance—like any travel insurance provider—is dependent on many factors: your age, your destination, the length of your trip, and any personal requirements such as higher lost luggage cover for specific equipment or items, whether or not you need cover for certain sports and activities, any pre-existing conditions you need covered, and more.

From a quote Forbes Advisor Australia ran of a 28-year-old going to Bali for one week, paying an excess of $250 and opting in to $2000 of cancellation cover, $10,000 of lost luggage cover, and rental car excess, the total WAS quote came to $141.80, which was higher than competitors.

Allianz did the right thing by us when we had travel delays

I can recommend Allianz. There were storms over the country and 50%of the flights out of Orlando were delayed or canceled. We had to switch airlines and got to destination 8 hours late and missed car rental. Had to make other arrangements. Allianz did the right thing by us. We’ll be renewing our annual travel insurance next month with them

Date of experience : 05 April 2024

Allianz Filing System very User Friendly

Our experience with Allianz was great! The online filing system was very user friendly. Documents were easy to upload and the ease of knowing what documents were needed was listed for the user. The company also sent update emails to let us know where our case was in the process.

Amazing company with excellent coverage …

Easy purchase of new (same coverage) policy after my original one lapsed by a couple of days. I have not had to make a claim yet but love your company and exceptional customer service! I am an RN Case Manager in a hospital. This is where I first learned of Allianz. I have worked with your staff multiple times on behalf of patients who were covered by one of your policies. I was always impressed by the wonderful coverage, service, and assistance provided to them by Allianz. That is how I came to choose Allianz for my travel insurance needs.

Loved the result/hated the process

What made my experience great was receiving the refund. What wasn’t so great was trying to provide proof that my children had the flu. You don’t take kids to the doctor with a flu usually, but you also don’t take them to the theater. Fortunately, a picture of my child lying on a couch next to a bucket and a screenshot of the email I sent to his school saying he had the flu were sufficient. But for a while I was very worried I’d have paid that extra “insurance” fee for nothing. But kudos to you for following through on your intended purpose. I will use your service again, but I hope it becomes easier to submit a claim.

Allianz will not disappoint...trust me!

Allianz has been great! The claims process was super easy and I received updates as it was processing. I was very surprised how quickly the claim was processed and finished. I would 100% use this company again to purchase travel insurance. They were incredible.

Date of experience : 04 April 2024

Easy Process

When filing our claim the representative told us exactly what documentation was needed to complete the claim. About a week later, we received a text and email saying the claim was approved and funds were in our account the next day.

Doesn’t cover state of emergencies?

Wanted to visit family in Texas because they just had a baby. I was unaware of the eclipse and the kinds of crowds it draws, and that it would essentially clog up all the roads to a standstill on rural areas, wipe out the gas and food and rental cars. Don’t buy this insurance. It’s a scam. Maybe if you or a loved one has a stroke and are in the hospital they might actually cover you. But if nature causes a declared emergency and you want to replan your trip, go screw yourself. Make sure to chart the stars, moon and sun before traveling anywhere i guess because this travel won’t cover declared emergencies.

Glad I Chose the Insurance Option

The concert date was months away and I am so glad I chose the insurance option. We had a family emergency preventing us from going. I submitted the paperwork requested and the response, and then refund was quick.

First time user

I had difficulty navigating the site, I made a call and all of my questions were answered and I was able to make a claim I was so surprised at how fast I was compensated I've booked four additional flights and I'm looking forward to purchasing my travel insurance and working with this company again

Allianz made a very stressful time easier.

Due to a serious medical problem we had to cancel 2 cruises. Allianz didn't add to the distress at all. We had no problem proving our claim and they approved it in a timely manner. I will always use Allianz.

Easy Annual Policy Renewal

Allianz made the purchase of annual travel insurance pretty easy. They provided good info on the options. This was actually a renewal for us. I do wish they would send out a reminder email within 30 days of the policy expiration date.

Dear Albert, Thank you for your positive feedback and for renewing your annual travel insurance policy with us. We're delighted to hear that you found the purchase process easy and that our information on the options available was helpful. We appreciate your suggestion regarding a reminder email prior to policy expiration and will certainly take this into consideration to enhance our customer service. Thank you for choosing Allianz for your travel insurance needs. Sincerely, Kris Social Care USA

Fast-Easy-Helpful

The company was fast and helped pay me back for a canceled last-minute trip. I typically never buy the added insurance, however after this last need to cancel, I will never not but the protection. Thank you!!

Allianz is a scam.

I’m giving one star because zero stars isn’t an option. Allianz is a scam, and I will actively encourage others never to purchase it. I recently had to reschedule a flight due to food poisoning. Alaska Airlines charged me a $135 rebooking fee. Allianz refused to cover this fee because I didn’t have a letter from a physician or the airline stating I was too sick to travel. Who gets a doctor’s letter when a last-minute sickness arises? I purchased insurance to cover unplanned emergencies like this, and Allianz refused to honor their policy. I will never purchase airline insurance aiding.

Date of experience : 31 March 2024

I had a flight canceled because of…

I had a flight canceled because of weather and the airline couldn’t rebook me for two days, by which time the conference I was going to would be more than half over. So I pulled the plug on the trip. I had a non refundable hotel reservation. Allianz refunded all but the first night, which is pretty standard. I was very pleased!

All that I have ever done is purchase the insurance so it is hard to give a 5 star based on only a purchase. My friends purchased and used this company and were EXTREMELY SATISFIED on how they handled a situation that my friends encountered on a cruise. Since I have never filed a claim or needed help/assistance this four star rating is the maximum that I would give. A FIVE STAR needs to be earned through performance which I HAVE NOT REQUIRED / NEEDED! GOOD JOB!

Dear Steve, Thank you for taking the time to share your review. We appreciate your positive feedback and are delighted to know that your friends had an extremely satisfying experience with our services during their cruise. While we understand that you haven't personally filed a claim or required assistance, we assure you that our commitment to providing exceptional support remains unwavering. We strive to earn your five-star rating through our performance, and we will continue working diligently to ensure that we meet your expectations should you ever need our services in the future. Thank you for your trust in our company. Sincerely, Kris Social Care USA

they kept their word …

when my husband had to have unexpected surgery, we ended up having to cancel going to the concert. luckily i had taken out insurance. they paid every penny back!

INSURE YOUR TRIPS!! YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN SOMETHIG MAY HAPPEN....

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS THAT TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE FROM ALLIANZ TOLD ME TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!! ONE TOLD ME NOT TO CANCEL MY FLIGHT THAT ALLIANZ WOULD DO IT, AND THE OTHER TOLD ME THAT I WAS THE ONE THAT HAD TO CANCEL MY FLIGHT. I ENDED UP DOING SO BUT THEN DELTA ISSUED ME A CREDIT , WHICH I KNEW THEY WOULD DO. HOWEVER, WHEN I CHECKED BACK DELTA HAD REMOVED IT. BEING A TRAVEL AGENT MYSELF IT WAS AN EXPIERIENCE. I HAVE INSURED ALL MY FLIGHTS AND ADVISE MY CLIENTS TO DO THE SAME. HOPE THEY DIDNT HAVE THE SAME ANXIETY :)

Dear Mary, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Allianz. We understand that dealing with conflicting information can be frustrating, and we sincerely apologize for any confusion caused. We value your feedback and will use it to improve our communication processes to ensure that our customers receive consistent and accurate information. We appreciate your trust in Allianz and your recommendation to your clients. We strive to provide a seamless and anxiety-free experience for all our customers, and we will continue working to enhance our services. Sincerely, Kris Social Care USA

I think that my coverage fell short of what should have been covered.

I think that my coverage fell short of what should have been covered. The tour leader scheduled all the services provided by the Paramedics/ Ambulance and without their assistance I would not have been able to return home. I was unable to walk and the paramedics literally carried me on and off of the train and took me from the train station in Paris to thhe hotel. Upon my return home, I spent six weeks in the Assisted Living Dept. inthe senior community where I reside. I had several doctor visits, X-Rays, MRI, and many physical therapy sessions covered by Medicare and my Supplemental Medical Insurance. Its been a long haul but I'm doing OK now.

Phone support left a lot to be desired when our flight was cancelled. Claim experience was a little cumbersome, but in the long run, they validated our choice to purchase the insurance.

I have used Allianz for many trips and I have always felt well insured. Also I had a trip planned to leave for Isreal, Jordan and Egypt on October 20 for a 25 day tour. Of course because of the sitution that occured on 10/7 the trip was canceled, Allainz did a great job reimbursing me for the trip. I will be using them again for a trip to both Jordan and Egypt that is coming up at the end of the month. I will always used them my trips!

Read the fine print: Winnipeg couple's travel insurance claim 'not covered,' insurer says

Flood forced pair to cancel trip, but cancellation coverage didn't include specific event.

Social Sharing

A Winnipeg senior is questioning the value of buying flight cancellation insurance after his claim was denied.

James Parker, 78, and his wife, Rena, bought two tickets on WestJet flights to Calgary last December to visit relatives in January. They purchased the cheapest ticket option knowing they wouldn't get a refund or credit should they need to cancel, so they decided to get cancellation insurance just in case.

The insurance was a cheaper option than the more expensive tickets.

"Pre-COVID, we didn't really buy cancellation insurance," James Parker said.

Because there have been so many delays with airlines since the pandemic, Parker says he thought he would get insurance for peace of mind. After he selected his tickets and seats, he clicked on the box for cancellation insurance.

"It was $117, I think, something like that," he recalled. "It gives me a little bit of peace of mind, you know, so that's what I did."

A few weeks later, he says, they got a call that their accommodations would no longer be available because their relative's condo had flooded and she was forced to move out for six weeks. The Parkers had rented a condo in the building, but were told they would no longer be able to stay there.

WestJet refunded Parker's seat selection, but he was still out $623.72 on the cost of the flight. He filed a claim with Allianz Global Assistance Canada, thinking he would be covered. He was not.

The photo shows an expense claim was denied because the reason was not listed as a covered reason in the policy.

"I mean, it said cancellation insurance. Quite honestly, I didn't read the fine print," Parker said.

"You would think there would be some leeway … it was impossible for us at the time to to make other arrangements."

A spokesperson for Allianz Global Assistance says the trip cancellation and interruption plan offered through WestJet does not cover disasters that affect prepaid accommodations at the insured's destination.

"In general, for prepaid travel expenses to be eligible for reimbursement under trip cancellation benefits, the reason for cancellation must be listed as a 'covered reason' within the customer's policy of insurance," wrote Tayjua Squire, manager of corporate communications for Allianz Global.

She said a copy of the policy would have been provided to the customer at time of purchase.

Squire said all travellers should review their policy to understand the scenarios that are covered, and those that are not.

He believed his claim was reasonable and would therefore be reimbursed for the cancelled flights, but later learned if it's not listed as a covered reason no refund is provided.

"I thought it was unfair, and I questioned my idea about what insurance is for," he said.

94% of claims are paid: insurance association

The Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada says a recent survey showed 94 per cent of travel insurance claims are paid.

"The benefits are there for many Canadians when they're purchasing it. It's the unfortunate times when the coverage expectation doesn't line up with the actual wording of the policy," said the association's executive director, Will McAleer.

He says policies vary and advises purchasers to become familiar with what's covered before boarding the flight.

Will McAleer is wearing a light blue pinstriped collared shirt. He's sitting in front of a picture of a dock floating in a body of water.

"They put policies in and they price them according to the wording that they've got, so it'll cover certain things in one policy, but maybe not another ," McAleer said.

For example, one of the "covered reasons" listed on Allianz Global's website includes a disaster "that renders your pre-booked destination accommodation uninhabitable after you book your trip." In that case, the Parkers would have been covered, but that option was not included in the WestJet policy he purchased.

"It's not unusual for insurers in the Canadian market to have many different policy wordings depending on the partner or the partnership that they're working on. And those can differ in terms of coverages and provisions," McAleer said.

Parker feels he had a valid reason to cancel his trip and should have been covered.

"It's the principle more than the money that is bothering me at the moment," he said, adding travel insurance policies need to be more nuanced.

"I understand it's a business to make money, but I think there should be leeway to deal with changes or modifications that arise, because not everything can be written down, you know? I mean, it's life," Parker said.

He said in the future he would rather buy travel insurance from a local company, and not just tick off a box and hope he will be covered if anything happens.

2024 Travel Insurance Plan Reviews

Travelex Insurance Services Review

  • Travelex Insurance Services
  • 3 plans to choose from: Travel Basic, Travel Select, and Travel America
  • Options for post-departure medical coverage and flight-only plans also
  • "A+" rated and accredited by the BBB
  • In business for 25+ years

Travelex Insurance Services offers the basic and expanded trip coverage you're used to, insuring travelers for more than 25 years. However, they have a number of options you won't see with other providers, like a $60 flat-rate policy for trips of up to 14 days within the US and post-departure medical coverage. This company gets good feedback when claims are made, and both an "A+" and accreditation from the BBB. Travelex is well worth considering to protect your next adventure.

Allianz Travel Review

  • Allianz Travel
  • 10 plans to choose from, including single-trip, annual/multi-trip, and rental car coverage

Allianz Travel insures more than 55 million people annually, from families taking their once-a-year vacation to business executives crisscrossing the globe year-round. The company has 10 different policies to choose from, including a standalone car rental plan. Most policyholders making claims say that the reimbursement process goes smoothly with Allianz, though some experience long delays. While you'll get a wider range of travel insurance options with some rival companies, Allianz can be trusted to get the job done.

The 13 Best Travel Insurance Plans

Who offers the best travel insurance.

With daily news stories of delayed and canceled flights, lost baggage, and travelers stranded overseas in the middle of a natural disaster, it's easy to see why travel insurance is so important. Like most types of insurance, travel insurance is bought in the hopes that you'll never need it. But, for most travelers, it's worth the price for the protection it provides.

Have you ever thought that this coverage was just an unnecessary, added expense? That's fairly common: most people assume that they've got protection through their credit card company, their regular health insurance, even their homeowners' policy. In some situations, that may be accurate - but unless you know the details of those types of coverage, you're more likely to be left paying out-of-pocket expenses you thought were taken care of... but aren't included.

The Best Travel Insurance Plans

Travel Insurance Plan FAQ

What is travel insurance, what does travel insurance cover, what does travel insurance not cover, can i get travel insurance if i have a pre-existing medical condition, is travel insurance expensive, my chocolate is going someplace warm. will it melt, where can i buy travel insurance, is it safe to get travel insurance online.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

And, even if you do have that kind of protection, travel insurance policies can amplify your benefits. For example, if you choose a plan that offers $500,000 in primary medical coverage, you might not need to touch your regular health insurance: your bills will be reimbursed up to that amount, no matter what your everyday health plan includes. Car rental insurance can go above and beyond what's paid for by your credit card company or even your own vehicle's coverage - and that can be critical if you're driving in another country and have an accident.

What type of travel insurance do you need? Naturally, that depends on your trip, your travel party, and your budget. A single-trip policy will be more affordable than multi-trip coverage - but if you're traveling internationally more than once in a year, the annual policy becomes much more economical. Do you need to be able to cancel for any reason? Is it important to you to have a waiver of the pre-existing conditions exclusion? Are there any children under 18 in your party that might be included at no extra charge, depending on the insurer you select? These are all factors that will influence your decision when picking a travel insurance plan.

Confused yet? You do have a lot of options. Here are some criteria to help you sort through them and ultimately wind up with the travel insurance coverage you need:

  • Quote process. How easy is it to get a quote that matches your insurance needs? Does the site explain the questions it asks, and does it display all of the possible plans in a way you can understand? Can you buy your policy right then and there, or do you have to click through to another site?
  • Value. What's included for your premium? From one site to another, you will probably see the same price on any given plan because the states regulate travel insurance prices. However, it's worth your time to compare premium prices and benefits among different insurers, so that you get the most for your money.
  • Reputation. It's easy for an insurance company to get high marks from customers if they never had to make a claim on the policy. What do clients who've filed claims say about the way they were treated? Were they reimbursed quickly? Did they get updates about the status of the claim? It's also good to check the Better Business Bureau's rating of any travel insurance service you're going to use.

To help you get the protection you need on your next adventure, TopConsumerReviews.com has evaluated and ranked today's most popular sources of travel insurance. We're confident that this information will make it easy to protect yourself and what you've spent on your trip - and to have backup if something goes off track on your journey. Bon voyage!

Why Cashless Mediclaim is a Must-Have Insurance Feature for Policyholders

Cashless Mediclaim

Understanding Cashless Mediclaim Policies*

The evolution to "cashless everywhere"*, why cashless mediclaim is essential*.

  • Immediate Medical Attention: Cashless policies ensure that policyholders can receive immediate medical attention without financial hindrance, critical in emergencies.
  • Financial Security: By eliminating the need to arrange for funds upfront, these policies provide a safety net that protects savings and prevents debt.
  • Wider Hospital Access: With "Cashless Everywhere," policyholders are not restricted to network hospitals, broadening their options for quality healthcare.
  • Streamlined Processes: The cashless system simplifies the administrative process, reducing paperwork and saving time for both policyholders and healthcare providers.
  • Reduction in Fraud: By directly dealing with hospitals, insurance companies can reduce instances of fraud, ensuring genuine claims are processed efficiently.

Implementing "Cashless Everywhere"*

  • Elective Procedures: Notification to the insurer at least 48 hours before admission.
  • Emergency Treatment: Notification within 48 hours post-admission.
  • Policy Adherence: The treatment and claim must adhere to the policy terms and the insurer's operating guidelines.
