ANA Mileage Club Program Guide: Everything You Need to Know

ANA Mileage Club is regarded by points and miles enthusiasts as one of the best ways to redeem American Express Membership Rewards points. Unfortunately, no other major credit card points programs allow transfers to ANA Mileage Club. So, unless you have an Amex card in your wallet, your credit card points won’t be usable through ANA Mileage Club.

ANA, which stands for All Nippon Airways, is a Japanese airline and a member of Star Alliance. That means that ANA miles can be earned and redeemed on any other airline that’s a member of Star Alliance. Oftentimes, ANA Mileage Club offers lower redemption rates than any other frequent flyer program for certain Star Alliance partner award flights. This is particularly relevant to U.S.-based travelers who fly frequently with United Airlines or Air Canada.

While the ANA Mileage Club website is known for having some technical issues, the potential savings you can find through this program may be sufficient incentive to deal with these quirks. Through this program, you can find low-priced award flights from the U.S. to Japan in ANA Business class, good deals on flights between the U.S. and Australia on ANA or one of its Star Alliance partners, low-priced award flights between the U.S. and Europe on LOT Polish Airlines, TAP Air Portugal and United Airlines and good deals on travel between the U.S. and Latin America on Avianca, Copa Airlines and United.

So, even if you don’t live in Japan or you don’t ever plan on going to Japan, ANA Mileage Club is a frequent flyer program worth paying attention to. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about ANA Mileage Club, including its elite status program, how to earn miles, how to redeem miles and which of those redemption options offers the best value per point.

ANA Mileage Club Program Overview

All Nippon Airways began as Japan Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports Company in 1952. On Dec. 15, 1953, the company operated its first cargo flight from Osaka to Tokyo, marking the first flight operated by a Japanese pilot since World War II. The company later began operating passenger flights on the same route in 1954. Then, in 1957, they changed their name to All Nippon Airways Company, which has stuck with the company to the present day.

Today, ANA has over 200 aircraft in its fleet. The airline operates over 130 domestic routes throughout Japan as well as routes to over 30 international cities, including destinations on every continent except for Africa, Antarctica and South America.

Plus, since ANA joined Star Alliance in 1999, you can fly almost anywhere in the world with one of ANA’s Star Alliance partners. Here are the other 25 members of Star Alliance:

On top of the Star Alliance partners listed above, ANA also has several other non-Star Alliance partners with which you can earn and redeem ANA miles. Here are ANA’s other airline partners:

In addition to earning miles with the aforementioned airline partners, flights operated by many of them are also eligible to earn Premium Points, the metric used to earn elite status in the ANA Mileage Club program.

ANA Mileage Club Elite Status

ANA Mileage Club has its own elite status program that includes three premium tiers: Bronze, Platinum and Diamond. To earn an elite status, you need to accrue a certain number of Premium Points and a certain percentage of those Premium Points must have been earned from taking ANA-operated flights.

Premium Points can be earned on both ANA-operated flights and flights operated by Star Alliance members and Star Alliance Connecting Partners. Flights operated by non-Star Alliance partners are not eligible to earn Premium Points. The specific number of Premium Points that you’ll earn per flight is based on mileage, booking class, fare type and several other factors. Here is the formula used to calculate Premium Points earnings:

• Premium Points = Basic segment mileage × Mileage accrual rate by booking class and fare type/rule × Route Ratio + Boarding Points

The Route Ratio (which is essentially a multiplier for the amount of Premium Points you’ll earn) varies depending on whether you’re on a domestic Japanese flight or an international flight and depending on which airline you’re flying with. The Route Ratio for Japanese domestic flights is 2. The Route Ratio for ANA-operated international flights between Japan and Asia, Japan and Oceania and Japan and Vladivostok is 1.5. The Route Ratio for all other ANA-operated international flights, Star Alliance member-operated flights and Star Alliance Connecting Partner-operated flights is 1.

So, if all other factors were the same, an ANA-operated domestic Japanese flight would earn you twice as many Premium Points as a flight operated by another Star Alliance member.

To make things a little less complicated, ANA has a ” Premium Point Simulation ” tool on its website that can tell you how many Premium Points you’ll earn on domestic Japanese flights. However, if you want to figure out how many Premium Points you’ll earn on international flights, you’ll have to do the calculations yourself.

The following chart explains how many Premium Points you need to achieve each elite status tier, how many of those Premium Points must have been earned on ANA-operated flights and the benefits of each elite status tier:

The selectable benefits that are available to ANA Mileage Club Diamond members include the following:

• Receive 12 Upgrade Points (which can be used for cabin class upgrades and airport lounge access)
• Receive coupons worth 40,000 Japanese yen (about $270 at the current conversion rate) for accommodation and dining at IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan properties
• Receive a voucher for one fine dining experience
• Choose a complimentary gift from ANA’s hand-picked lineup of merchandise
• Receive 60,000 ANA SKY COINS, which are digital coupons that can be used to purchase Japan domestic and international flight tickets and travel products on the ANA website (60,000 ANA SKY COINS is worth 60,000 Japanese yen, which is equal to about $405 at the current conversion rate)
• Receive 6 ANA Suite Lounge vouchers (which can be used by the primary member or friends and family)
• Receive coupons worth 40,000 Japanese yen (about $270 at the current conversion rate) which can be used on in-flight purchases on ANA international flight as well as products from ANA STORE@SKY, ANA FESTA and ANA DUTY FREE SHOP
• Receive e-vouchers worth 40,000 Japanese yen (about $270 at the current conversion rate) for payments on ANA Shopping A-style
• ANA will plant 20 coral seedlings on your behalf in the ocean just off Onna Village, Okinawa

It’s worth noting that you can earn 5% additional bonus ANA miles on flights if you have one of ANA’s co-branded credit cards. However, none of these credit cards are available in the United States.

The ANA Mileage Club elite status program is fairly complicated. But, if you often fly to or from Japan, then it may be worth trying to earn ANA elite status. Having Bronze, Platinum or Diamond elite status can help you accrue ANA miles faster, access ANA airport lounges, receive preferential treatment and fly more comfortably.

How to Earn ANA Miles

There are many ways to earn ANA miles, the most obvious of which is taking ANA-operated flights. But, apart from that, you can also earn miles by flying with ANA’s airline partners, booking hotel stays, renting cars, transferring credit card and hotel points, shopping online and more.

ANA Domestic Flights

ANA Mileage Club calculates earnings on ANA-operated domestic flights within Japan differently than for its own international flights. To calculate how many miles you’ll earn on an ANA-operated domestic flight in Japan, you need to multiply the basic sector mileage (the distance flown) by the accrual rate, which depends on your fare type). Accrual rates vary from 50% to 150%. If you want to see the accrual rate for a specific fare type, you can do so on ANA’s website here .

For instance, the segment distance between the cities of Tokyo and Sapporo is 510 miles. So, if you were to take a one-way ANA-operated flight on this route and your fare type was ANA FLEX (for which the accrual rate is 100%), you’d earn 510 miles. However, if you purchased the same flight with an ANA SUPER VALUE SALE fare (for which the accrual rate is 50%), you’d earn 255 miles.

Of course, if you have elite status with the ANA Mileage Club program you will also earn bonus miles. For instance, if you were to take that flight from Tokyo to Sapporo with ANA FLEX fare, which would earn you 510 miles without elite status, you would earn 714 miles as a first-year Bronze elite member due to the 40% miles bonus.

To make things easier, you can use the Mileage Calculator tool to calculate how many miles you’ll earn on a particular ANA-operated flight. You can simply enter your origin, destination, departure date, which kind of ANA co-branded card you have, your ANA elite status and your booking class. Then, this convenient tool will tell you how many miles you’ll earn for an ANA-operated flight (both international and domestic).

ANA International Flights

ANA uses a different miles earnings table for its own international flights. To determine how many miles you’ll earn on an ANA-operated international flight, you’ll need to multiply the segment mileage by the accrual rate that corresponds with your fare code. The following table includes the accrual rate for each fare code:

For instance, if you were to take the 4,775-mile flight from Seattle to Tokyo on ANA in Economy Class (fare code H), you would earn 3,342 ANA miles (4,775 miles flown * 70% = 3,342 ANA miles).

Plus, ANA-operated international flights are also eligible to earn elite status bonuses. So, if you took the same flight and you had first-year Platinum elite status (which offers a 90% bonus), you’d earn 6,349 miles.

Alternatively, you could simply plug your information into the Mileage Calculator tool on the ANA website to discover how many miles you could earn for any ANA-operated flight (domestic or international).

Partner-Operated Flights

ANA also allows Mileage Club members to earn ANA miles for flying with most airline partners. Each of these partners has its own earnings table, so you’ll have to visit that specific partner’s page on the ANA website to calculate how many miles you could earn on a specific flight. You can view all of these partner earnings tables by visiting the Partner Airlines page on the ANA website.

Then, you simply need to find the accrual rate for your fare code (just as you would for ANA-operated international flights) and multiply it by your flight distance to calculate how many miles you’ll earn for a specific partner flight.

For example, here are the accrual rates for flights operated by Air New Zealand:

So, if you were to book a Business Class flight on Air New Zealand from Auckland to Sydney, which has a distance of 1,345 miles, you’d earn 1,681 miles (1,345 miles flown * 125% = 1,681 ANA miles). Partner-operated flights are also eligible to earn bonuses, so you’d earn even more miles if you had elite status with ANA.

Transfer Partners

One of the best ways to boost your balance of ANA miles, especially for those who don’t fly with ANA or its partner airlines often, is to transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to ANA Mileage Club. Amex points transfer to ANA miles at a 1:1 ratio and transfers generally take around 48 hours.

If you don’t already have Amex points, you can quickly earn a large sum of Amex points by earning a welcome bonus offered by one of American Express’s many credit cards.

Unfortunately, American Express Membership Rewards is the only credit card rewards program that allows transfers to the ANA Mileage Plan. However, several hotel rewards currencies transfer to ANA miles at varying ratios. The following table includes all of ANA Mileage Plan’s hotel transfer partners and their respective transfer ratios:

As you can see, none of these hotel rewards programs offer favorable transfer ratios except for Shangri-La Circle, which offers a 1:1 transfer ratio. However, Shangri-La Circle points are typically considered to be way more valuable than ANA miles, so you’re better off spending them in their native program than converting them to ANA miles.

ANA World Hotel and Car Rental

ANA has its own hotel booking and car rental portal through which you can earn ANA miles for making eligible travel purchases. With the ANA Travelers porta (powered by Agoda), you can choose to search for hotel homestays, longer vacation rental stays of 7 days or more, or car rentals. Then you can choose to either use cash and earn miles or redeem miles for your rental.

Through this portal, you can book stays at over 1.5 million properties worldwide. All you need to do is enter your travel destination, your desired dates and the number of guests. Then, press the “Search” button and the ANA Travelers portal will show you a list of results that match your search query.

Through this portal, you’ll earn 1 ANA mile per 100 Japanese yen spent.

For certain hotels, the ANA Travelers portal may not offer the best room rate compared to other travel booking engines. So, you’ll want to compare the prices displayed on ANA Travelers to other rates available across the internet. However, if the price is right, this portal is a great way to earn ANA miles while booking hotel stays.

As previously mentioned, you can also use this portal to book car rentals. Similarly, you can simply enter your desired dates, driver age and pick-up and drop-off locations and the ANA Travelers portal will show you a list of results that match your search query.

You’ll also earn 1 ANA mile per 100 Japanese yen spent when renting cars through this portal. While this portal seems to have limited availability for rental cars, choosing to rent a car through the ANA Travelers portal is a good way to pick up some extra miles.

Hotel Stays

You can also earn ANA miles for booking stays with hotels directly or through third-party booking engines. Several of these hotel chains also allow you to convert their own rewards currency to ANA miles. For instance, you can choose to earn ANA miles directly for stays at World of Hyatt properties or you can choose to earn Hyatt points on that stay and then convert those Hyatt points to ANA miles. In cases like this, you should compare how many ANA miles each method would earn you for that stay.

The following table includes ANA’s hotel partners that allow you to earn ANA miles directly on stays and how many miles you could earn per stay with each partner:

Many of these hotel chains and booking engines also have partnerships with other frequent flyer programs in addition to ANA Mileage Plan. So, if you’re planning on booking with one of these companies, such as Accor Live Limitless (ALL) or Booking.com, you might want to consider whether you’d be better off earning a different rewards currency.

It’s also worth noting that, by electing to earn ANA miles for your hotel stay, you’ll be forfeiting the opportunity to earn that hotel’s native rewards currency. So, you should consider whether you’d be better off earning ANA miles or hotel points.

Rental Cars

You can also earn ANA miles directly by renting cars from certain companies. However, many of these rental companies have partnerships with other frequent flyer programs. So, before you decide to earn ANA miles, you should consider whether or not you want to earn a different airline’s miles.

The following table includes all of ANA’s rental car partners that allow you to earn ANA miles directly on car rentals and their respective earnings rates:

In order to earn ANA miles on an eligible car rental, you will need to select ANA Mileage Club as your rewards program of choice at the time of booking as well as provide your ANA Mileage Club membership number.

In-Flight Duty-Free Shopping

You can also earn miles by making purchases with ANA Sky Shop, ANA’s in-flight duty-free shopping selection. These items are only available in-flight when traveling with ANA. However, you can browse through the ANA Sky Shop digital catalog, pre-order products and receive them during your upcoming flight.

You’ll earn 1 mile for every 100 Japanese yen spent through the ANA Sky Shop. Miles earned on these purchases can’t be registered retroactively, so make sure to provide your ANA Mileage Club membership number at the time of purchase.

Other Ways to Earn ANA Miles

ANA also has several other partners that allow you to earn miles across several different industries including shopping, sports, dining, education, spas, moving, communication and more. Here are some of these partners and their respective earnings:

How to Redeem ANA Miles

There are many different ways to redeem ANA miles including booking award flights, purchasing additional baggage allowance, renting cars, dining out, buying merchandise and more. However, if you want to get the most value out of your miles, your best bet is to stick to redeeming your miles for award flights with ANA or one of its airline partners.

Regardless, we’re going to cover each of the different ways you can spend your ANA miles and which of these redemption methods offers the most value per mile.

ANA Japanese Domestic Flight Awards

ANA publishes three award charts: one for ANA-operated Japanese domestic flights, one for ANA-operated international flights and one for partner-operated flights.

Award prices for ANA-operated domestic flights depend on the flight distance and whether the flight is booked during Low Season, Regular Season or High Season. Here is the award chart for ANA-operated Japanese domestic flights:

The award prices listed above are for one-way journeys. If you want to know the round-trip price, you can simply double it.

The opportunity to book domestic flights for as little as 5,000 miles is usually a great deal. For instance, you can book one-way journeys between Tokyo and Osaka for just 5,000 miles during Low Season (since this journey is under 300 miles in distance).

It’s also worth noting that ANA publishes another award chart for itineraries involving flights to or from outlying islands in the Okinawa Prefecture with a connection in Naha. You can view that award chart on ANA’s website here .

ANA International Flight Awards

A&A also publishes a series of award charts for its own international flight awards. Award prices for ANA-operated international flights depend on which zones you’re flying between, your cabin and whether you’re flying in Low Season, Regular Season or High Season. You can view all award charts for ANA-operated international flights on ANA’s website here.

ANA-operated international flight awards start at 12,000 miles for one-way flights in Economy Class between Japan (Zone 1) and Seoul, South Korea, or Vladivostok, Russia (Zone 2). However, prices for ANA-operated long-haul international flights during High Season can go all the way up to 240,000 miles for First Class flights between Europe and Moscow (Zone 7) and Oceania (Zone 10).

ANA is also notorious for having very limited availability for premium-cabin awards. However, if you do some heavy searching, you book one-way flights between the U.S. and Japan during Low Season for 75,000 miles in Business Class and 150,000 miles in First Class. ANA currently operates routes to the following U.S. destinations:

• Los Angeles
• San Francisco
• Washington, D.C.

You can also fly one-way between the U.S and Japan in Economy Class for as little as 40,000 miles during Low Season.

Unfortunately, ANA levies rather high surcharges on their own award flights, including a surcharge of up to $173 each way for any itineraries originating in North America. That means that you’d end up paying surcharges of at least $346 for a round-trip between the U.S. and Japan.

In many cases, you may want to consider booking ANA-operated award flights through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club rather than through ANA Mileage Club as surcharges can be significantly lower.

However, even with those relatively high surcharges, purchasing ANA-operated award flights between the U.S. and Japan can offer solid value. For instance, if you were to book a flight from New York (JFK) to Tokyo (HND) on Nov. 17, 2023, it would cost you $1,441.20 in cash.

According to ANA’s award chart, this flight would cost you 50,000 miles if you booked it with points (because this flight occurs during the Regular Season). So, if you factor in that you’d be required to pay surcharges of around $173 for this one-way flight (according to the Fare Rules page on the ANA website), this redemption would yield a value of about 2.5 cents per mile, which is pretty good.

While the fact that ANA levies surcharges on its own awards is disappointing, the fact that ANA Mileage Club still uses a fixed award chart to price its award flights means that it’s still possible to find outsized value redemptions like the one above.

Partner Award Flights

ANA publishes another series of award charts for partner-operated awards. Award prices for partner-operated flights depend on which zones you’re flying between and your cabin class. Partner award prices, however, do not vary based on what time of the year you book your flight (as they do with ANA-operated award flights). You can view all partner award charts on ANA’s website here .

Partner award flights start at 15,000 for one-way flights within Japan in Economy Class. One-way partner-operated flights between Japan and North America cost 50,000 miles in Economy Class, 85,000 miles in Business Class and 150,000 miles in First Class.

ANA passes surcharges in from certain partners and doesn’t pass on surcharges from others. In particular, award flights operated by airlines within the Lufthansa Group, including Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa and Swiss, tend to have the highest surcharges (sometimes exceeding $1,500). Luckily, you can avoid paying surcharges altogether by booking award flights operated by partners such as Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Avianca, Copa Airlines, SAS, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal and United Airlines (with the exception of certain United flights around Asia).

Unfortunately, finding partner award availability through the ANA Mileage Plan can be quite a challenge as partner award availability is fairly limited through this program. However, here are some sweet spots to look out for if you’re willing to do some searching:

• Round-trip Business Class flights between the U.S. and the Philippines on Philippine Airlines for 95,000 miles
• Round-trip Business Class flights between the U.S. and Europe on TAP Air Portugal or United Airlines for 88,000 miles
• Round-trip Business Class flights between the U.S. and South Africa on Ethiopian Airlines for 104,000 miles
• Round-trip Business Class flights between the U.S. and South America on Avianca or Copa Airlines for 88,000 miles

Once again, though, it’s often very difficult to find partner award availability through ANA Mileage Plan, especially if you’re looking to book a premium-cabin award.

Star Alliance Round-the-World Awards

ANA Mileage Plan is a fairly good program with which to book a round-the-world award . There are a few restrictions to keep in mind. But, you can book up to 12 segments and up to four ground transfers (including travel between different airports in the same city) as well as multiple transfers on the same ticket. You are allowed to book mixed-cabin awards but the price in miles will be based on the highest cabin class. For instance, if you were to book one segment in Economy Class, one segment in Business Class and one segment in First Class, all three segments would be priced as if they were First Class.

ANA round-the-world awards can only include flights on Star Alliance partners. Segments on non-Star Alliance partners are not permitted.

Here are a few other restrictions to keep in mind:

• Flights must be used to cross both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans once.
• The itinerary must be east-to-west or west-to-east. Backtracking is not permitted.
• Up to 8 stopovers are permitted between the departure point and the final return point.
• Up to 3 stopovers are permitted within Europe.
• Up to 4 stopovers are permitted within Japan.

With proper planning, you can get a ton of value out of your ANA miles by booking a round-the-world award. Here is ANA’s round-the-world award chart:

If you have some travel flexibility and you want to book a round-the-world award with Star Alliance, ANA Mileage Club is usually the best program with which to do so. You can also book Star Alliance round-the-world awards through Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, but the prices are often significantly higher than ANA Mileage Club.

In addition to earning miles through the ANA World Hotel and Car Rental portal, you can also spend your miles booking hotels or rental cars all around the world. Unfortunately, redeeming your miles this way typically provides a very low value.

To book hotels and rental cars with miles, you simply need to search your destination and travel dates as you normally would. Then, you just select the “Book with miles” option at the top of the search results in order to view each hotel’s or rental car’s rate in miles.

We found a room at the Dorsett Singapore hotel available for 31,237 miles per night. If you were to book the same room with cash, it would cost you 31,237 Japanese yen (which is equal to $209.10 at the current exchange rate).

If you select it, this redemption would yield a value of about 0.6 cents per mile, which is very poor. Any time you redeem your miles for hotel stays or car rentals through the ANA World Hotels and Car Rentals portal, you’ll get this same value. That’s because 1 mile is equal to 1 Japanese yen through this portal.

ANA Variety Coupons

ANA Mileage Club also gives members the option to redeem their miles for Variety Coupons, which are essentially experience vouchers redeemable with partners that are available for between 10,000 miles and 100,000 miles. For instance, you could spend 30,000 miles on a coupon for the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka that’s good for a one-night stay for two guests plus consumption tax and service charges but excluding meals.

Alternatively, you could redeem 20,000 miles for a full-course dinner for two with aperitifs at THE JEWELS restaurant in Sapporo, Japan.

Redeeming your miles for Variety Coupons actually provides decent value. For instance, a one-night stay at the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka costs around 48,000 Japanese yen or more (equal to about $321 at the current exchange rate). So, redeeming 30,000 miles for the coupon we just mentioned would yield a value of a little over 1 cent per mile. While you can still get far more value by redeeming your miles for award flight, that’s not a bad value.

Unfortunately, these Variety Coupons don’t offer much flexibility. Once you purchase a Variety Coupon, it can only be used for a specific service at a specific location.

ANA allows you to redeem your miles for gift cards for Amazon or Macy’s. Redeeming 12,000 miles can get you a $100 Amazon e-gift card or a $100 physical Macy’s gift card that will be sent to you in the mail.

In both cases, you’d be getting a little over 0.8 cents per mile in value, which is pretty poor.

Convert to Partner Points

Unlike many frequent flyer programs, ANA Mileage Club allows you to convert your miles into many different partner rewards currencies. You can convert miles in increments of 10,000 to several different programs including Rakuten and Marriott Bonvoy. You can view the full list of eligible programs and their transfer ratios on ANA’s website here .

Redeeming your ANA miles this way will typically yield a very low value. You’re far better off redeeming your miles for award flights.

Donate Your Miles

If you want to use your miles to make a positive impact, you can donate them to one of ANA’s partner charities. Miles are worth 1 Japanese yen apiece when donated this way, which is pretty poor value when compared to the value you could get for redeeming your miles for flights. However, if you don’t plan on using your miles and you want to use them to help the world, donating is a great way to do so.

The Bottom Line

For most U.S.-based travelers, ANA Mileage Plan probably isn’t the first frequent flyer program on your radar, particularly because American Express Membership Rewards is the only major credit card currency that transfers into this program.

However, ANA Mileage Club is worth paying attention to due to its position as a member of Star Alliance, meaning that you can use ANA miles to book award flights operated by United Airlines and Air Canada. ANA Mileage Club is also the best program for booking Star Alliance round-the-world awards.

You can also find some solid deals on flights between the U.S. and South America on partners like Copa Airlines and Avianca, flights between the U.S. and South Africa on Ethiopian Airlines and flights between the U.S. and Europe on United Airlines and TAP Air Portugal. ANA also offers some well-priced award flights between the U.S. and Japan.

So, if you’re an American Express cardholder or you often fly with Star Alliance members, it may be worth trying to rack up some ANA miles even if you live outside of Japan.

5 Award Sweet Spots Using ANA Mileage Club Miles

If you’re looking for sky-high value when you redeem your points, there is a pretty clear standout airline loyalty program.

ANA Mileage Club is the loyalty program of Tokyo-based All Nippon Airways. Even if you don’t fly to Japan often, there’s still plenty of opportunities to earn and redeem its miles on Star Alliance partner flights. The airline is a member of the Star Alliance and is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy .

According to NerdWallet’s valuations , ANA Mileage Club by and away had the most valuable airline miles. We estimate that they’re worth about 2.8 cents each, compared with the 1 to 1.5 cent valuations of most other airline miles.

So some award flights on ANA cost less miles than they would if you were booking with other airlines. That means there’s plenty of sweet spots, particularly in business class around “low season.”

Because ANA has generous routing rules that allow you to book open jaw and stopover awards , the potential for high redemption value is almost off the charts.

When you want to book award flights on ANA, you’ll need to know the season (low, regular or high; note it varies by route), the class of service and the departure/destination zones. These dictate the number of miles required for awards.

Although one-way awards are not allowed, ANA has incredibly generous routing rules, allowing stopovers on its round-trip or open jaw awards. Many of the awards discussed below allow a free stopover as long as it remains within the same destination zone.

Valuable sweet spots for ANA award flights

1. u.s. (zone 6) to japan (zone 1).

ANA flies nonstop from several U.S. airports to both of the major international airports in Tokyo: Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda International Airport (HND). Low season as designated by the airline in 2022 is Jan. 4 to Feb. 28 and April 1 to April 26. During the " low season ," you can find business class round-trip flights between the U.S. and Tokyo for 75,000 miles.

Compare that with how many miles you would need to book this route through another Star Alliance airline like Air Canada, which charges 150,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles for a business class flight.

2. U.S. (Zone 6) to Australia (Zone 10)

No matter which frequent flyer program you use, flights from the U.S. to Australia cost a lot of miles. But flying ANA or a Star Alliance airline partner from the U.S. to Australia using ANA miles can be a good relative value. Round-trip business class flights on ANA that go through Japan require 105,000 miles during the low season.

Flights to Australia on a Star Alliance partner require 120,000 ANA miles. As a comparison, booking this flight with one of the next best Star Alliance programs for these regions, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles , requires 150,000 miles for business class. (Based on our most recent analysis, NerdWallet values Turkish Airlines miles at 1.1 cents each.)

3. U.S. (Zone 6) to Europe (Zone 7)

Many Star Alliance airlines are based in Europe, so you have plenty of options to book round-trip Star Alliance flights from the U.S. to Europe for 88,000 ANA miles in business class or 55,000 ANA in economy.

Because of ANA’s generous routing rules, you could book creative itineraries allowing for a stopover in your destination zone. This would allow you to visit up to three destinations for the same 88,000 miles in business or 55,000 miles in economy for your award flights from the U.S. to Europe.

As far as taxes go, LOT Polish Airlines, TAP Air Portugal and United Airlines are examples of airlines that have reasonable taxes and fees plus decent award availability when booking a flight to Europe with ANA miles. Other Star Alliance airlines like Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS and Swiss Air Lines have high fuel surcharges or low award availability.

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles is probably your next-best option for booking a Star Alliance award flight to Europe. But at 90,000 miles for business class, you’d spend 2,000 more miles than you would with ANA.

4. U.S. (Zone 6) to Africa or the Middle East (Zone 8)

Etihad and other Star Alliance flights from the U.S. to Africa and the Middle East generally require more miles than flights to Europe and South America. Since ANA doesn’t fly to the Middle East or Africa, you’d be looking at the partner award chart. It would cost 104,000 ANA miles for business class or 65,000 ANA miles for an economy class ticket from the U.S. to Africa and the Middle East with this airline program.

Again, a close competitor is Turkish Airlines. But at 70,0000 Turkish miles to book a business class Star Alliance flight from the U.S. to Africa or the Middle East, it’s clear ANA miles get you more value for the same route.

5. U.S. (Zone 6) to South America (Zone 9)

Star Alliance members Avianca , Copa Airlines and United offer flights between the U.S. and Central and South America, which you can book through ANA using ANA miles. On its award charts, ANA treats all of South America as one region.

Some programs, like Air Canada Aeroplan, divide South American into two regions, making it more expensive to fly to southern South America from the U.S. ANA treats the continent as a single region.

So the sweet spots for ANA redemptions to South America are when you’re heading to the southern half of the continent. For example, with 88,000 ANA miles, you can fly round trip business class to anywhere in South America. Compare that with Air Canada, which offers a better deal, 75,000 miles, for a business class flight to northern South America, but costs more, 110,000 Aeroplan miles, for a business class flight to the southern half of the continent.

If you want to leverage ANA’s award chart ...

The unfamiliarity with ANA and the inability to book one-way flights may discourage some travelers from considering ANA Mileage Club, but there are plenty of ANA sweet spots. ANA’s miles are exceptionally valuable, especially if you redeem them for business class, book with Star Alliance partners and incorporate the generous stopover and open jaw rules.

With several routes to the U.S., a competitive award chart, and plenty of partner booking options, let’s dive into ANA first class.

A Look Inside ANA First Class

ANA is widely considered to be one of the best airlines in the world, and its first class experience really drives that point home.

When you fly ANA’s first class out of Tokyo, you’ll be treated like a VIP from the moment you walk into the airport. This is because the airline has a private ANA Suite Check-In in Terminal 1 for its most exclusive customers.

ANA’s concierge staff will help make the check-in process a quick and painless process. You can either check in at the counter or wait comfortably on one of the check-in area sofas.

Once you’re finished checking in, you’ll be off to security. While this is probably one of the least enjoyable experiences for most travelers, you’ll be whisked through priority security in no time.

At this point, you might rush to your gate — but hopefully, you’ve left enough time to relax in the ANA Suite Lounge, which is available at both Narita and Haneda.

It’s here where ANA’s amazing service starts to shine. During your stay, you can enjoy a great meal and refresh in one of the fully-stocked shower rooms. ANA really makes an effort to ensure the wait, as well as the flight, is an experience to remember!

Once onboard the ANA Boeing 777-300ER , you’ll see a large rectangular first class suite waiting for you. Unlike some first class suites, these seats do not have doors that close you off from the rest of the cabin. But they provide more than enough privacy (especially the window seats).

Another difference you’ll notice is that the 2 middle seats also have tons of privacy. Even if you lower the divider, you still have to lean forward to talk to the person next to you.

No first class experience wouldn’t be complete without pajamas and an amenity kit. ANA first class amenity kits are provided by Samsonite (departing from Tokyo) or Rimowa (departing to Tokyo) and have everything you need to refresh on a long flight.

ANA is moving forward with its epic refurbishment of its 777-300ERs. Known for offering its “flagship” premium products, the new ANA 777-300ER will arguably solidify its place among the best international first class products in the world .

ANA’s new first class will consist of enclosed suites in a 1-2-1 configuration, each complete with sliding doors. Also, the seats are ridiculously sleek yet minimalist. The in-flight monitor will measure an astonishing 43 inches, which would make it the largest personal television on a commercial airline in the world. Also, it will be a 4K monitor, the first of its kind on an airline.

Arranged in 2 rows with a 1-2-1 configuration, the 8-suite cabin will present an epic “East Meets West” collaboration between architect Kengo Kuma and British design firm Acumen Design Associates. The biggest gripe of ANA’s first class “The Square” had long been the closed-off nature of the hard product, which can make talking to your seatmate difficult if you’re traveling together.

ANA’s response to this is one of the most epic in the history of commercial aviation, and this will undoubtedly catapult the first class experience to a whole new level (not that it wasn’t already a top-tier product).

How To Fly ANA First Class Using Points

ANA is a member of Star Alliance , which is the world’s largest airline alliance — so you’ll have plenty of options for booking ANA first class.

The most straightforward way to book first class is through ANA’s own Mileage Club program . The entire booking process can be taken care of online. This might be the best way to book ANA business and first class, because ANA keeps a decent amount of award availability reserved for ANA Mileage Club members only .

Here are the steps to booking ANA first class:

• Select ANA Mileage Club .
• Select International  then Award Reservation .
• Log in to your account.
• Enter your desired route and dates.
• Select First Class .
• Select your flights.

There are a few important caveats to remember when booking with ANA Mileage Club. First, you can only book awards for yourself and your family members .

Second, ANA has low, regular, and high seasons for awards. Stick to the low and regular seasons for your award bookings to get the most bang for your buck.

The mileage cost of first class awards is actually the same for the low and regular seasons, so there are plenty of travel dates from which to choose.

Third, ANA allows you to waitlist award bookings . This can be a nice feature, but there’s no guarantee you will move off the waitlist (especially on popular travel dates). For this reason, it’s important to check whether your selection is actually putting you on the waitlist.

Fortunately, it’s clear when you are waitlisting for an award. Just make sure you confirm before moving forward!

ANA not only allows you to transit a third region on your way to a destination, but they allow you to book a stopover. This means you could visit Tokyo for a bit before continuing to Australia.

If you need some more miles in your Mileage Club account, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards .

Membership Rewards generally take about 2 to 3 days to transfer. Keep this in mind before transferring, as award space isn’t guaranteed to be available if you wait.

In today’s age, it’s extremely difficult to find sweet spot awards to Asia . Luckily, Virgin Atlantic is an amazing transfer partner of all major flexible award points.

This is crucial for Virgin Atlantic Flying Club because they offer unbeatable first class award redemption rates on ANA to Japan .

One significant drawback of Virgin Atlantic vs. ANA is that Virgin Atlantic will only be able to reserve award seats that are released to partners. Since ANA has access to much more award inventory, you’ll need to plan further in advance or be more flexible.

Here’s how to book ANA first class with Virgin Atlantic ( do not transfer your points yet ):

• Visit United or Aeroplan .
• For Aeroplan: Under Use Your Miles select Travel.  Select your travel dates, cities, and business/first class.
• For United: Click round-trip, check Book with miles , and select your travel dates, cities, and first class.
• Find your desired flight in ANA first class.
• Call Virgin Atlantic at 800-365-9500 to hold  your award booking for 24 hours.
• Transfer your points.
• Call Virgin Atlantic at 800-365-9500 to confirm your booking once you have enough points and pay for taxes and fees.
• For example, John Steven Doe would be entered like this: First Name: JohnSteven and Last Name: Doe.
• You will be prompted to log in with your ANA Number and Password.
• Click Service  on the right tab to select your seats and add meal preferences.

The last thing you need to know is about transfer times: Chase and Citi transfer instantly, Amex takes 2 to 3 business days, and Marriott Bonvoy can take as long as Amex. Make sure you know this when you’re planning award holds ! If your award hold is lost, there’s no guarantee the seats will still be there if you try again.

You can also book ANA flights through Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, a Star Alliance partner.

Here’s what you need to know to book.

• Visit Air Canada’s Aeroplan .
• Log in to your Aeroplan account (you’ll need your account number).
• Under Use Your Miles  select Travel.
• Select your travel dates, cities, and class of service
• Find your desired flight — make sure it’s ANA first class
• Complete the reservation online on Singapore Airlines’ website. Be sure to select Star Alliance Partners instead of Singapore Airlines .

Booking through Singapore KrisFlyer allows you to book a one-way first class award on ANA if that’s all you need.

A big benefit to booking this way is that it allows you to leverage Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points since Singapore Airlines is a partner. Transfers to the KrisFlyer program generally take up to 24 hours; transfers from Citi generally take 1-2 days.

Asiana Club miles provide another great option for booking flights on ANA. Like Singapore Airlines, it also allows one-way bookings.

You must reserve and have your ticket issued 3 days prior to departure, which prevents snagging last-minute awards.

• Search for availability using Aeroplan’s site (see above for the steps)
• The U.S. call center is open between 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. PST (Monday to Friday)
• Tell the phone representative you’d like to book an award with Star Alliance partner ANA
• Provide your travel dates and flight numbers
• Once you confirm space, you will be prompted to give your credit card for any necessary taxes and fees

You can also book through one of ANA’s other Star Alliance partners including Avianca LifeMiles , United MileagePlus , or Air Canada Aeroplan .

Each program we discussed above has its sweet spots:

• Virgin Atlantic is the best way to fly round-trip if you see partner availability.
• Asiana Club often provides solid one-way redemption options, but it doesn’t allow stopovers.
• Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer might cost a few more miles, but you can book one-ways and stopovers.
• ANA Mileage Club requires round-trip bookings, but offers some of the best redemption rates and allows stopovers . Most importantly, ANA has exclusive award availability compared to all other partners.

Here’s a quick comparison of some round-trip award redemptions with each program.

* Virgin Atlantic is really only worth it to fly to Japan. It’s possible to book to places like Australia and Thailand, but you don’t get anywhere near the same value.

When booking with Asiana Club, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, or Singapore KrisFlyer, a one-way ticket will cost half the miles of the round-trip award.

Since ANA is an Amex transfer partner , you can transfer miles at a rate of 1:1.

Singapore Airlines and Virgin Points are also a Chase transfer partner,  American Express Membership Rewards, and Citi ThankYou Rewards (all at a rate of 1:1).

Becoming an advanced award traveler requires mastering two separate skills: earning points and miles and effectively redeeming them. By developing a portfolio of the best travel rewards credit cards , you can master the first skill. The second skill can be more challenging.

However, some travelers frequently run into issues finding award space.

Unfortunately, there isn't a general rule you can follow to make searching for award space easier. Each airline and award search engine has pros, cons and quirks to be aware of.

Some innovative external tools can help you search for award availability across the major programs.

Search airline award availability with an app

Several apps and websites can allow you to search across multiple airlines, alliances and programs at once rather than worrying about the best loyalty program to search through.

If you're unfamiliar with ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures), read our beginners guide to award searches on ExpertFlyer to get up to speed. ExpertFlyer allows you to search for award inventory from most major airlines on one interface. You can search for up to seven days at a time and search for multiple cabins (i.e., first and business class) in one search.

ExpertFlyer doesn't support every airline out there (notable absences are Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines and, recently, most Star Alliance airlines). Still, if your airline of choice is supported, you should start your search there.

Alternatively, Point.me is a paid web service that checks for award space in 33 programs across over 100 airlines. You can search your desired itinerary, the dates and the number of travelers. Point.me will then give you real-time available award options you can book. It will also show which credit card points can be transferred to which partner, and how many transferable points you will need to book.

In our tests, the platform doesn't always give the most accurate information (e.g., taxes and fees are often inaccurate, and sometimes award space is incorrect), but it's a great place to start your searches. You can buy a 24-hour pass if you have a specific or urgent trip in mind, or sign up for an annual plan.

Bilt Rewards users can access a limited version of Point.me for free through the Bilt Rewards app. As with the full version, you can search for award flight availability, though you will only see results from Bilt transfer partners. If you have Bilt Rewards points you want to transfer to an airline loyalty program in order to purchase tickets, this is a good way to try Point.me for free.

You might also want to consider Roame and Seats.aero , which are fairly new resources offering a one-stop shop for your next award search.

Search award availability for North American airlines

First, you'll notice a few popular airlines are missing from this list. If you plan on flying Southwest Airlines or Spirit Airlines using points and miles, you must book directly with their loyalty programs, so you don't have to worry about picking a partner airline to search for award availability. These airlines have limited or no airline partnerships and use revenue-based loyalty programs.

U.S. legacy carriers are among the easiest to deal with because they all have relatively robust and comprehensive search engines.

More importantly, these programs are all leaning toward dynamic pricing , which means if you're trying to redeem United miles , you should always begin your search through United before checking award availability with a partner, as the surcharges may end up costing you more money when booking with the latter.

One of the (many) downsides of dynamic pricing is that less saver award space is available, which can make it harder to find a good deal on partner award sites. If you plan on booking your United flights through a partner like Avianca LifeMiles or Aeroplan in hopes of taking advantage of lower award rates, you should search directly with that partner program to make sure the award space is available.

Air Canada Aeroplan is an attractive loyalty program, too — especially for business-class flights to Europe. Regardless, compare pricing with Avianca LifeMiles before transferring your credit card points.

Search award availability for European airlines

Lufthansa first class is arguably the best way to fly between the U.S. and Europe with points and miles , but you'll need to be careful about which program you use to search for award space and book your ticket. Lufthansa only releases first-class award space to its partners 30 days out, so you'll need some last-minute flexibility to make this happen.

Avianca LifeMiles charges a very reasonable 87,000 miles for the one-way first-class award. Alternatively, you can book with Air Canada Aeroplan, but awards start at 100,000 points to or from East Coast airports, with longer flights charging more miles. However, one of the upsides to using Aeroplan is that you can add a stopover for 5,000 points on a one-way ticket.

This same pattern applies to other Star Alliance carriers as well. You'll always want to compare Avianca LifeMiles and Air Canada Aeroplan to see which one has the best pricing on any given route. Award availability should be similar across all these partners, so you may have an easier time searching with whichever program you plan to book with if you already have miles on hand.

Oneworld flights to Europe

Generally, you'll have the best luck searching for American, British Airways, Iberia and other Oneworld partner flights to Europe with American AAdvantage. You'll want to book Iberia flights with Iberia Plus Avios or British Airways Avios for the best rates. Likewise, you'll get a better deal booking connecting tickets with AAdvantage miles instead of Avios since British Airways charges per segment based on distance.

All Oneworld programs tack on huge fuel surcharges for British Airways flights, but you can reduce them if you book with Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Asia Miles consistently charges roughly half the fuel surcharges you'd pay with other Oneworld programs.

Search award availability for Asian airlines

Singapore Airlines premium-cabin awards

Singapore doesn't release long-haul premium-cabin award space to most of its partners, with the exception of Alaska Mileage Plan . So, as a general rule, always search for Singapore Airlines award space on the Singapore website and check the award price with Alaska Mileage Plan before deciding which program to use to book your flights.

Make sure you're getting the best deal on ANA award tickets

You're generally best booking with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points if you want to fly ANA. First-class ANA awards start at just 115,000 points round-trip , which is an excellent deal. You can't book these tickets on the Virgin Atlantic website. Find saver award space on the ANA or United website, and call Virgin Atlantic to confirm availability before you transfer rewards to book.

You can also book off-peak ANA business-class tickets starting at 75,000 miles round-trip from the U.S. to Japan with ANA Mileage Club . These tickets are bookable online on ANA's website. Plus, you're entitled to a free stopover elsewhere in Japan, so you can visit two cities for the price of one. Off-peak tickets to other destinations in Asia are also a good deal, but they will cost more points.

Search award availability for other airlines

General tips when searching for airline award redemptions.

Now that you know where to find award space for your next trip, let's look at a few tricks I use to make the process easier.

Search segment by segment

This is an odd quirk of most award search engines, but you'll often get different results if you search for your complete itinerary instead of one flight at a time.

If you can find availability per segment, even if the entire journey is now showing up in a single search result, you should be able to call the airline and book this as a single award without too much trouble.

Take notes and come prepared

Many airline customer service agents are good at their jobs, but you'll get much better results when you do the work yourself.

Before you call to book an award flight, you should have the exact dates and flight numbers you want; make that known early in the conversation.

As soon as I tell the agent where I'm trying to go, I'll throw in, "I have the flight numbers here whenever you're ready for them," so they don't waste any time trying to search on their end.

If you've done your homework to ensure that there is award space and your routing is valid, these calls will go much easier.

Bottom line

Learning how to find and book award flights is one of the hardest things about award travel — especially when booking premium-cabin seats on a long flight.
