The cost varies depending on where you fly, when you take the flight, and what airline you'll be traveling with 😳 . Methods to save money when traveling to the Bahamas

1. take the bus rather than the taxi.

  • The Bahamas is well served by public transportation that can certainly take you around. The bus services are cheap, quick, and safe. You can get to almost every famous tourist destination by bus, for a mere several dollars. As for taxis, many tourists complain about their high fees. You can avoid the taxi on your trip unless you want a safer way back home at night.

2. Bring your beach mat

  • You must have planned several days on the Caribbean beach. To appreciate the scenes quietly and fully, you can bring a light beach mat with you. Although there are some to rent at sea, they charge by the day or by the hour at a high price. Using your own mat can save you from these unnecessary costs.

3. Choose the activities carefully

  • The same activity may be priced differently depending on the business. Compared with private tours, group tours are more budget-friendly. Also, they always include cheaper transportation solutions. Trip.com offers travelers a lot of short excursion plans at reasonable prices. It's a suitable approach to paying less money and enjoying a better service.

4. Bargain about the price before paying

  • In the Bahamas, you can negotiate prices in markets or shops. When you hesitate about which souvenirs to buy, you can bargain their prices with the shop owner. Sometimes, you can even cut 50% off their original prices!

5. Share the food

  • In Bahamas restaurants, portions are usually huge. It's easy to cause waste if you order too much food for a few people. To avoid the wasteful Bahamas trip cost, you can ask for one meal first. Then, split it into two and share it with other people. After all, you can always order another dish if you find that you're still hungry.

6. Wait for a discount

  • The discount on hotels and flights always come by chance. Keep a close look at the prices and check them regularly. All the information on prices is displayed on Trip.com . Do the study before you make the last decision. When you find a good price, don't hesitate and grab the chance!

7. Eat the meals at the fish fry

  • Many Bahamian locals buy food at the fish fry. You can get authentic favorites here at a fairly cheap cost. The local food will allow you to enjoy food and the Bahamian way. Also, it's much cheaper than western food served in big hotels.

8. Think twice before payment

  • A rule always suitable in all trips is to think twice before purchasing. It's common that our impulses force us to make a purchase or order. However, several hours later, we start to regret the unnecessary cost. Thus, when you are encountering hesitation about whether to buy something, stop for two or three minutes first. Then, ask yourself whether you truly like or need it. If yes, buy it.

  • The Bahamas follows the right-hand traffic system. It may cause some difficulties if you are used to following the left-hand traffic system. To put this out of your worries, you can always take a bus or taxi. The train is also a good choice to travel between cities.

4. Tips are useful everywhere

  • Besides the restaurants, tips are welcomed anytime other people help you. For example, when someone gives you directions, they are expected to receive a tip. Thus, it's smart to add some tips in mind for your Bahamas trip cost budget.

5. Take the right clothes with you

  • If you decide to travel in the winter, you need to wear sweaters in the evenings. For the rest of the day, dress freely in summer clothes. However, it's illegal for anyone to wear camouflage clothing. Neither a citizen nor a traveler can wear such clothing in the Bahamas. Otherwise, you may be fined or get imprisoned.

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

With beautiful weather, sandy white beaches, pretty palm trees and luxurious all-inclusive resorts, a vacation in the Bahamas sounds like a great idea.

Not to mention the great food and blissful activities like swimming with dolphins and indulging in spa treatments. So you might be wondering how much a trip to the Bahamas costs.

This article gives the lowdown on what it costs to vacation in the beautiful Bahamas along with lots of useful information to help with your journey, which is sure to be totally amazing.

What is the average cost of a trip to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

It is not easy to estimate the cost of an average trip to the Bahamas because it all depends on your travel style.

If you fly first class, stay in the best hotels and indulge in all the possibilities from private yacht charters to luxury spa treatments, your budget will be much higher than a budget-conscious traveler who only books trips and tours when they are on sale.

As a rough guideline, you could expect to spend around $500 for a couple and about $700 for a family of four, covering accommodation, transportation, dining, and entertainment.

The other big factor is the time of year you travel. Low season, should season and high season all come with different price tags, especially when it comes to flights and rooms.

If you have a firm budget for your vacation, the flights and accommodation are the biggest ticket items. Factor in those costs and then you can calculate how much you have for other vacation essentials such as dining, transportation, tours and shopping.

All-inclusive resorts are always great value for money with your meals taken care of. You eat most of your meals at the resort and it’s included in the cost. You might have a few meals at other places if you are away on a day trip or see a fancy restaurant you want to try.

The all-inclusive packages often include resort activities, amenities and entertainment. You can’t go wrong with an all-inclusive travel package in the Bahamas.

What is the cheapest month to go to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

The low season is the time of year that you will find the best deals to the Bahamas. August to November is considered the off-season and when those on a tight budget love to scoop up the cheapest flights and room rates.

This can be a nice time of year to visit if you like avoiding crowds of tourists on the beaches and attractions. The shoulder season is from mid-April to June. During this time you can also find some good deals.

The weather is nice most days and it is not too busy. In the low season, there is plenty of sun with frequent rain and some thunderstorms. It is also hurricane season, so you need to plan well and stay safe.

The high season with the best weather is from November to April, when the weather is the nicest. The downside is you are sharing the island with many tourists during this peak time and the prices are the highest of the year.

No matter what time of year you go to the Bahamas, there are many ways to save money.

You can book accommodation near the beach but not on the beachfront, eat at cheap restaurants, look for free activities to enjoy and make the most of hotel services like free shuttles and breakfast buffets that might be included in the room price.

Are the Bahamas cheaper than the U.S.?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

The Bahamas is a pricey place to visit (and to live). But the U.S. can also be expensive depending on where you fly from and the kind of vacation you have.

When you look at all the Caribbean islands, the Bahamas is one of the most expensive. It is hard to compare the Bahamas and the U.S. because some states are much more expensive than others and it’s such a big country.

When you book all-inclusive resorts where your accommodation, food and drink is included and sometimes other services and perks, you can save a lot of money. Often the minibar is even stocked up.

Knowing what you will spend on those main expenses means the rest of your budget can be spent on transportation, tourist attractions, and shopping. With a glorious beach always nearby and near-perfect weather, you don’t need so much.

A great book and a few cocktails to take you into the sunset don’t cost much.

Is the food in the Bahamas expensive?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you eat like a local and not like a tourist during your trip to the Bahamas, you can get better prices for meals. If you stay in the touristy areas or eat inside the resorts, you will pay more.

In the supermarkets, you will notice food is probably a bit more expensive than back home.

How far is a flight to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you are traveling from America to the Bahamas, the average time of a nonstop flight is about 3.5 hours or just under 1,000 miles.

One of the most popular flights is from Newark to Nassau, which takes two hours and 55 minutes. Paradise is so close and since it is such an in-demand destination, you can fly there from many airports in the States.

Do you need a passport to go to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you are an American citizen going to the Bahamas, you will need a valid passport and proof of on-going travel after leaving the island. Some Caribbean islands don’t require a passport.

They include the U.S. Virgin Islands: St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas. Always make sure you have at least six months on your passport before it expires from the date you are returning.

Less than that and some airlines will refuse to board you. If you need to update your passport, we recommend doing it sooner rather than later.

Passport issuing is taking a little longer these days due to Covid. As the world opens up again, everyone is rushing to travel and many are renewing their most valued travel document.

How much is rent in the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you’ve fallen in love with the Bahamas and want to stay awhile or even have dreams of living there, you might be wondering how much it costs to rent in this Caribbean paradise.

You will be happy to know it is about 10% lower than rent in America. For example, you can find a one-bedroom apartment in the capital of Nassau for about $900 per month.

There are over 25,000 Americans living in the Bahamas, so the ex-pat community is strong. They love the weather, tax benefits, beautiful beaches and laidback lifestyle.

Also, it’s easy to fly back to the States to visit friends and family, so it’s not surprising it’s a popular place for people to move to.

Is the Bahamas more expensive than Hawaii?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

These two premier destinations are often compared since they have many things in common, including glorious beaches, great food, nice weather and modern tourist infrastructure.

Those pink sand beaches you see in the Bahamas versus the tropical hula dancers. No wonder it is so hard to decide.

Price has to be a factor to consider, and when it comes to the Bahamas versus Hawaii in terms of cost, we can report it is quite similar. Both are classed as expensive places to visit.

But if you really want to see the Bahamas, you can make your budget work by prioritizing your luxuries, seeking out the best deals and not spending too much on unnecessary things like shopping.

Instead of buying a piece of artwork, take a beautiful photo yourself and frame it for your home. You still have the reminder of how gorgeous the Bahamas was in an artistic form without the hefty price tag.

Is alcohol expensive in the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

In contrast to food which is rather expensive in the Bahamas, alcohol is pretty cheap. Usually sold by the liter, you can get bottles of liquor for under $10. Taxes on beer and wine is higher, so costs are a bit more.

Of course, you can buy some spirits at duty-free and enjoy some drinks in your room. Just call for room service to send an ice bucket and some mixers and you are set.

You probably know the Bahamas is famous for rum, with most of the world’s rum produced in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Even if you are not a big fan of rum, you need to at least try it or maybe take a tour through The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory in downtown Nassau.

John Watling’s Distillery  is a beautiful 18th-century property that offers free rum tours and is also well worth a visit.

Top 5 airlines flying to The Bahamas

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Boarding was good, was able to get on early and get settled in . Loved the glass of wine before take off. Once in the air the service was amazing, from the snacks, drinks and the food was good. The flight attendants were very good and attentive. Love flying with Delta..

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

On 2 different flights the wifi was horrible and there was no drink or snack service.

Wifi wasn’t working well so we couldn't view any media.

Flight was late. Club was full. Experience is exactly what I expected.

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

at the time for boarding the lady just call Group A and no other goups and everybody from A to F go inside without the right turn, and when we get in theres no more spsce for carry on , the ones that get in at not correct group from the back occupy our space !!!!! a mess !!!!

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Everything was good except for deplaning in NY. Took way too long!!

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

Trip was smooth bumpy from the wind but no issues at all the crew attendant was very pleasant and had great customer service

This was a Lufthansa flight. Disappointing main meal. Very rough over Canada and arrival at FRA. IFE was almost unusable.

It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

I liked everything about the flight. The service was excellent!

The customer service was excellent! Check-in, baggage check-in, boarding, the flight went very smooth.

The flight was delayed instead of leaving at 11 it left at 12.20

United WiFi is consistently unusable (it can take 10 mins to load a single web page). If you need Wifi to do work, be prepared to lose half a day of productivity.

We waited to takeoff for about 1 hour delay for a 20 min flight.

Good dinner and nice plane.Smootz flight. Breakfast had no sweet option. Seats hardly reclined.

The flight was delayed for over four hours due to “maintenance “. Your ground staff made no efforts to avoid my family missing their connecting flight to London. They did not try to reroute them and didn’t even offer meal vouchers without being asked. My daughter, her husband and four children were in the States for our son’s celebration of life service. They experienced rude and unhelpful staff in Asheville. The lack of communication was disgraceful. They missed their connecting flight and the first rebooking. Then the 2nd rebooked flight was delayed by over two hours. They didn’t leave Charlotte until 1:30 AM. Since returning home my granddaughters sleep has been so disrupted that they are overly tired and cry hysterically at bedtime. I have already contacted you regarding compensation but have yet to receive a response. All I’ve received is a canned wrote response. This is not acceptable!!! When my wife and I traveled to England in December on your partner, British Airlines, we were delayed for 4 and one half hours. We missed our connecting train to Leeds and had to pay double. They not only reimbursed our extra train expense, they also refunded half our airfare. And upon our return to the States we were surprised to find that they had upgraded us for free! Now that’s customer service!!! I look forward to a prompt real human response. Sincerely, Jon Cannon

Crew were attentive and friendly. Flight was smooth and early! I enjoyed the less crowded plane. Thank you!

No complaints. The flight was uneventful, which is a good thing.

Was as expected. Good leg room on planes - much appreciated.

after boarding on phx to sjd, crew discovered that one of the megaphones was either out of date or not working. It took 90 minutes to get a replacement and do the "paperwork." That is really unacceptable. Why wasn't the megaphone problem discovered before boarding? Is it part of normal maintenance check? who is responsible for checking. How can paperwork take that long? Fortunately, SJD was final destination for most travelers so very few if any passengers had to miss connections.

We sat on the plane for 1 hour because the airline was short handed could not be unloading.

We sat on runway for an 1 hour because they were short handed at key west airport was not fun

Awful customer service on the phone. No phone number on the website to call a real person. Website says changes are no charge but this is a lie. I had a cheaper ticket through Kayak therefore Finnair wouldn’t change it unless I would pay the entire fare again. I begged but their agents at the airport were rude and the online chat person cut off the call with no help. Super disappointed. Wont fly this airline again and will tell everyone I meet how bad it is. Crew on the flight was nice but otherwise huge disappointment.

Fight crew was not very attentive and the bastions were gross!

Late boarding to clean plane from previous flight; initial boarding announcement not loud enough; fantastic cabin attendant front of plane

Going the plane was late and then Bahamas Air chartered another plane to take the passengers to San Salvador.

4 hour delay Noisy passengers Tight seats Missed connecting flight in Ft. Lauderdale

We were scheduled to travel at 12pm. The flight got delayed with no updates until 11:30am. They advised that we will receive an update at 1pm. However, the flight was then delayed until 6pm with no clear indication as to if that was the departure time. It was NOT! They decided to combine two of their scheduled flights into one due to the smaller number of passengers. If you do not wish to be inconvenienced, “STAY AWAY FROM THIS AIRLINE”!!!!!!They do have a track record of this!

Flight was delayed more than 2 hours in departure. Boarding was lengthy and passengers were very rude. I waited on the plane for almost an hour once boarded and it was very hot. The passenger next to me was clearly I’ll: coughing and sneezing the entire flight.

Very courteous staff at the gate and excellent assistance with my needs as a handicapped person on board. The flight itself was uncomfortable, with tight seating and seats they don’t recline, so be aware. The aircraft itself is old and worn, and it shook a lot and made a lot of noise, especially upon takeoff and at landing. But, hey it’s a short flight and it got me back home to Florida safely, so….

I feel that I was scammed by BahamasAir. Both on flights 202 and 207, to and from Nassau - Fort Lauderdale June 2, June 6. I paid for 2 full size bags and selected seats. On both flights they told me I had not paid for luggage or seats. I was charged $100 extra each way without seat assignment. BahamasAir does not participate in TSA Pre Check. Even if you have it you cannot use it. Instead endure long lines because BahamasAir will not pay their share of PreCheck.

Booked thru you. Paid and was supposed to have 1 checked bag and seat 3 C; with the same for my wife sitting on the opposite side of the aisle in 3D. At airport we had to pay $ 25 each for 1 bag each.. we’d were given seats inn row 17

Boarding process was smooth and easy. The crew was friendly and communicable and transparent about the delay at the landing destination.

Flight was delayed 7hours due to multiple planes having mechanical issues.

Nothing to add! I will definately use your website again. Thank you

My Bahamas Vacations

How Much is an Average Trip to the Bahamas: A Breakdown

  • / By Richard Andrews

With 700 islands and awe-inspiring beaches, the Bahamas is one of the world's most popular tourist spots.

According to the country's tourism industry, more than seven million tourists visited in 2019, which is an all-time record.

That is because the natural beauty, coupled with the local craft and cuisine gives visitors an out of the world experience. However, all of this doesn't come at a low price.

Typically, for people coming from most parts of the world, the Bahamas is an expensive place to visit.

So, how much is an average trip to the Bahamas?  This guide will give you a rough estimate of how much to save for your first or next Bahamas vacation.

How Much Would It Cost to Get to the Bahamas?

The flight costs vary depending on the  time of the year  that you’re traveling to the Bahamas.

Most people head to the Caribbean beaches during the winter to escape the heat of their home countries, so  December to March  is a peak time for tourist influx in the country.

That’s when the weather is pleasant, and there's a lower risk of hurricanes.

Apart from the weather, your destination will also determine the ticket price.

For example, if you go to  Nassau , a popular tourist town, the flights will be cheaper than those for lesser-known islands like Eleuthera.

On average, a round-trip flight will cost around $600 and may get as high as $1000 in some seasons.

So, do your research before buying a ticket. Try different itinerary websites such as  Trip Advisor  to find the best deals and times to travel.

If you want to save some money, don’t travel during the holiday seasons as this is when the prices peak.

How Much is an Average Trip to the Bahamas?

Once you're in the country, you have to pay for many things, including accommodation, activities, drinks, tips, and hiring a tour guide.

Your expenditure could be higher or lower, depending on your personal preferences.

Still, the following are the average costs to give you a vague idea of what to expect:

1. Accommodation

Unless you're living in a $500 per night resort, the accommodation costs are similar to any popular tourist attraction.

On the other hand, there are few hostels in popular towns if you’re a student or looking for a budget-friendly option.

Keep in mind that you’ll have to share a bunk bed with a fellow traveler for $30 to $40 while the costs can be up to $100 a night for a double room.

Before you leave your home country, search for different options, and book beforehand.

You’ll find anything from a cheap $50 per night room in a local home to a $100 per night full apartment.

If you're traveling with kids or friends, it's best to get a full apartment or house.

Some of them go as low as $40 per night. Just don’t expect to find a jacuzzi in there.

Even when staying in expensive hotels, you can bag good deals if you bundle the hotel stay with your flight package.

Websites like  Expedia  have plenty of options that you can explore to find the best deal.

For example, one night at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar costs around $450, but you can save $50 when booking with Expedia.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most high-end resorts and hotels don't allow children. If you're traveling with family, you may not be able to stay at a fancy place.

2. Transportation

You can do anything from flying to taking a ferry in the Bahamas, depending on how far you want to go.

If you only have a week to spend and want to see as many sites as possible, opt for flying between islands.

The flights have a reasonable price, and multiple local airlines operate daily. For example, you can fly from Nassau to Eleuthera for $100 in just 20 minutes.

Alternatively, if you want to experience the beautiful waters of the Bahamas, consider taking the ferry.

High-speed ferries transport travelers between islands, but they're not always available.

For instance, if you want to go from Nassau to Long Island, it would take you 19 hours, but the ferry only makes one trip a week.

Ferry fares typically cost less than $100, and you get to enjoy the ocean too.

On the other hand, if you want to travel inside the city, you can take a bus. Jitneys are small mini-buses with fares around $2.50.

They don't follow a timetable, though, so you must rely on the driver for information.

Also, jitneys are not available in some cities, while in others, they don't operate at night.

Lastly, the easiest way to get around is the cab service. Just like Uber, cabs in the Bahamas have a flat rate of $4.50.

Add $2.02 for each kilometer, being an ex-British colony, Bahamas uses kilometer conversions, you travel, and that will give you the final fare.

how much is an average trip to the bahamas

You know how they say "W hen in the Bahamas, do what the Bahamians do? "

That's what we recommend when it comes to food because eating local is the best way to save money.

A local fish food will cost around $10 or less if you’re eating at a small restaurant.

In contrast, if you eat at a restaurant serving American or English cuisine, your bill could be as high as $30.

What's the fun in eating the same food you eat at home, even when away from home?

While food doesn’t cost that much, drinks in the Bahamas can certainly empty your wallet.

Typically, a drink costs around $10 to $12, depending on the size and kind.

You can save some money by drinking local beer, also called Kalik, instead.

If you like to take a few extra shots on vacation, designate a significant part of your budget to cover the bar bill.

Fortunately, the water in the Bahamas is safe for drinking. So, there's no need to spend money on bottled water; tap water is absolutely fine.

5. Activities

After accommodation, the major part of the budget will go to activities, and there's plenty to do in the Bahamas.

You can go diving or kayaking at Sea Park. Most kayaking trips are spread over a few days, costing around $300.

If you're on a multi-city trip, you can choose a one-day plan, priced at $50.

If you’re interested in the local ecology, you should spend $17 on the admission ticket to the Garden of the Groves.

Housing alligators and exotic birds, the garden provides a habitat to over 10,000 species of plants and animals.

The markets are also a great place to shop for souvenirs to take back home and support the local economy.

With over 60 shops, the Port Lucaya market has everything from restaurants serving local cuisine to live music entertainment.

Although the vendors charge high prices for the locally-crafted goods, you can get a good deal if you know how to bargain.

You can ask at your hotel’s front desk about the best thing to do during that particular season.

Mostly, they have brochures lying around for daily trips and activities.

If you just want to walk around, exploring local culture, you can take a walking tour for above $100.

Most tours include photography, lunch, drinks, and pick up from the hotel room.

Your Estimated Final Budget

So, we’re back to the main question: " How much is an average trip to the Bahamas?"

Your final budget for a one-week stay in the Bahamas can be up to $1700, excluding the flight.

It could be higher or lower, depending on how you plan to spend your time.

For example, if you plan on doing about five activities a week, expect to spend about $1000.

But this doesn't include expensive activities like swimming with the pigs, which can cost over $500 if you get private transport.

In contrast, if you spend time discovering the local islands, sitting on the beach, and eating at local restaurants, your expenditure could be lower.

Here's our final tip: don't try to pack a hundred experiences into a week's stay.

Enjoy fewer things, but do it fully instead of running from one activity to another.

Bahamas Vacation Budget

If planned right, a trip to the Bahamas shouldn’t cost you a lot.

You can always find cheap deals online on travel websites. You can also ask your hotel reception in the Bahamas for free or discounted night clubs and other city activities.

Hopefully, with the information you've learned, you'll have a ball of a time in the Bahamas, among its clear skies and the stunning beaches.

How Much Does it Cost to Go to the Bahamas?

It's better in the Bahamas – at least, that's what the hashtag says. But to experience "better," travelers often have to prepare for a relatively expensive vacation, as is the case on most Caribbean islands. The Bahamas themselves comprise 700 islands over 100,000 square miles of ocean, which is home to some of world's clearest water – so even considering some potential high prices, the islands might be worth a visit. Excluding flights, most vacationers spending two weeks in the Bahamas can expect to spend about $1,730 in Bahamian Dollars (BSD or about the same amount in USD) per person. Here's how the specifics break down:

Flight costs

Flights to the Bahamas don't necessarily cost that much, depending on the time of year. Trips in the fall tend to cost a few hundred dollars less than those in the summer, when Bahamas travel is more in demand.

  • How Much Is a Trip To Australia?
  • The Cheapest Time to Go on a Cruise
  • How to Save Money on a Cruise

For example, a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to the Grand Bahama International Airport on Freeport can cost less than $600 in September, when the same flight inches toward $1,000 in June.

Accommodation

For the budget traveler, the Bahamas offer few hostel options. A few budget hotels are out there, but they usually cost around $95 per night, at least.

The best deals are often Airbnbs, where visitors can snag anything from a cheap spare room to an entire home in a central location. Entire apartments start at $50 BSD, but most cost $90 or more.

A resort or nice hotel, on the other hand, can be a different story, but those options come much cheaper when bundled with flights in packages from sites like Priceline, Orbitz and Expedia. Three nights at the British Colonial Hilton Nassau can cost as little as $471 per person, including flights, according to one Priceline deal. A full week on Paradise Island at the Riu Palace plus flights can go for $1,379 per person. And remember: Many of the islands' resorts and upper scale hotels are for adults only.

Things to do

Good news: Lounging on the beach is free. And there's a ton to do on the islands aside from that: parasailing, snorkeling and various island tours, for example.

Unfortunately, even some of the simpler activities like snorkeling and fishing trips can creep up in cost, though they also offer some of the islands' best experiences. A four-hour kayaking tour, for example, averages about $70 per person, similar to a half-day snorkel trip. More extravagant adventures like diving or parasailing can get closer to $300, though those activities are usually accommodate multiple people, so are great for groups traveling together.

Museums and other inland activities go for lower prices, usually under $20.

Eating locally is actually one of the cheaper things to do on the Bahamas. A typical fish meal including dessert should cost less than $10, while restaurants specializing in American or U.K. food might get up to $25 per plate. A 15 percent service charge is often included, so look out for that.

Otherwise, visitors should expect to spend a good portion of their food budget on drinks, with an average drink budget hitting around $12 daily per person.

High season for the Bahamas lasts from about mid-December to mid-April, since winter is the islands' driest season, but the climate's still warm. Still, people are visiting the islands year-round, even during hurricane season, which technically lasts from June 1 through Nov. 30.

The only time to avoid the area is during spring break season. From March to mid-April, vacationing college students hit the islands to party – not the ideal trip for most families and couples.
