How to Set Up Credit Card Travel Notifications

Putting a travel notification on your credit card may prevent a major travel headache.

Travel notifications prevent a credit card issuer from flagging a purchase you make out of the country as fraudulent.

You might be ready for an upcoming trip, but is your credit card? Depending on your card issuer, you might need to set up a travel notification for your account.

Adding a card travel notification is easy. For most credit cards, you'll follow these steps:

  • Call your credit card company, log in to its website or access its app.
  • Share your travel dates and locations, if applicable.
  • Submit and verify your travel notification.

This will help you avoid potential hassles and embarrassing situations when you're away.

What Are Travel Notifications?

A travel notification is essentially a setting you activate on your credit card account. "Basically, you're just telling the credit card issuer you're going to be using the card outside of the normal places you (use it). That way, they don't think someone stole your credit card," says Simon Zhen, research analyst at personal finance website MyBankTracker.com.

If you're on a road trip, you could make a card purchase in one town and then try to shop in another distant location but have your card rejected. Dan Hanks, senior vice president of credit card loyalty and servicing at PNC Bank, says if a transaction appears to be fraudulent, it may be declined, even if it is a legitimate purchase. Purchase location is just one factor credit card companies consider when flagging fraudulent transactions .

"If a customer suddenly starts using a card in a place they've never been, especially in another country, it doesn't mean we'll decline them, but it increases the chance we might stop the transaction if we think it's fraud," Hanks says.

Transactions may be marked as fraudulent and your card deactivated as a precaution, particularly if your issuer can't reach you to confirm them. If you only bring one credit card on your trip, you may have a major problem on your hands. Luckily, setting up a travel notification before you leave is an easy solution.

How to Set Up Travel Notifications

A travel notification usually requires you to provide your planned destinations and trip dates to your credit card issuer. With that information, the issuer has more knowledge to weed out fraudulent transactions from legitimate ones.

You usually have a few options to set up a travel notification. First, you can call the card issuer. "Look on the back of the card, and you can find the phone number to call. You just tell the customer service rep that you'll be traveling," Zhen says. If you prefer digital communication, you can typically set up a travel notification through the credit card company's website or app.

Each credit card company has its own travel notification policies. While many companies allow you to set up travel notifications, others may not need you to tell them about your travel plans. Below are the policies of major credit card issuers:

American Express does not request travel notifications, citing industry-leading fraud detection capabilities.

Bank of America allows you to create a travel notice up to 60 days before your trip, and it can last up to 90 days from the first day of your excursion. With one travel notice, you can set up multiple itineraries for various cards. You must provide Bank of America a contact number for when you're away from home. You can also supply details about where you'll be staying, any planned layovers and other information that may help the company monitor your account for fraud while you're traveling.

According to Barclays , a travel notification is not mandatory, but it could be wise to avoid declined purchases simply because you are traveling abroad or to a different part of the U.S. Contact the bank by phone, or access your account online or with the Barclays app to set up a notification. If you will be traveling for more than 365 days, connect with the bank by phone to set up a notification.

Capital One doesn't need notification of travel plans because of the added security of the bank's chip cards.

Chase lets you set up a travel notification up to a year before your trip. The notification can last up to 90 days. You can apply the notification to multiple cards simultaneously and list multiple destinations.

Citi permits you to add a travel notification up to 180 days before your journey and up to 89 days after your trip begins. You can set the notification for more than one card and report several destinations with one travel notification.

Discover advises setting up a notification before you embark on a trip abroad. Your travel start date can be up to 24 months in the future, and travel notifications can last up to 24 months.

PNC Bank suggests notifying it of the locations and dates of your planned travel to help eliminate phone calls to confirm your account activities. You can create travel notifications up to two years before you depart, and notifications can last up to 30 days. If your travel plans exceed 30 days, you can set up more than one travel alert.

USAA recommends a travel notification to reduce the chance of your card being blocked or flagged for unusual activity. You can set up a notification up to one year before your trip, and the notification will last up to one year from your departure. USAA does not request travel destinations.

U.S. Bank allows you to establish a travel notification for any trip within the next 90 days. Notifications can last up to 90 days. If your travel plans exceed 90 days, you can set up an additional notification at a later date.

Wells Fargo favors notification of when and where you plan to travel. Wells Fargo's travel notifications do not have any time-based restrictions, so you can set up your travel alert for as long as you'll be away and not have to set up subsequent ones.

Overall, setting up a travel notification doesn't have a downside for the customer, Hanks says. Making travel notifications easy to activate is in a credit card company's best interest. And notifications reduce the chance that a real transaction may be classified as fraudulent, which makes everyone happier.

Don't Forget About Debit Cards

"Some people set up a travel notification on a credit card but forget to set one up on their debit card," Zhen says.

While credit cards offer many protections that can be useful when traveling, especially abroad, some people may still plan to use their debit cards. If you do, make sure you set up a travel notification on your debit cards, too, so your purchases on those cards don't get flagged as fraudulent transactions when you're on your next trip.

Key takeaways

  • The Bank of America travel rewards program allows cardholders to redeem points for statement credits to cover travel-related purchases making for a simple, flexible travel rewards option.
  • Bank of America travel rewards cards have various benefits and perks, but may not be the best option for frequent travelers compared to other programs since there isn't an option to transfer points to travel loyalty programs.
  • Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program can increase the value of rewards by 25 to 75 percent for members with qualifying accounts.

Bank of America’s travel rewards program isn’t as lucrative or extensive as what rivals like American Express or Chase offer, but some cardholders may find value in its simplicity, particularly if you are a Bank of America Preferred Rewards client.

If you’ve got one or more Bank of America credit cards that allow you to earn and redeem rewards for travel, or are interested in applying for one, this guide can help explain the basics of the bank’s travel program, including how to earn and redeem travel rewards and more.

Bank of America travel rewards basics

Compared to other issuers, Bank of America has a smaller portfolio of   travel credit cards , but there are some similarities in how you earn and redeem travel rewards with the cards.

Essentially, you can redeem the rewards you earn for statement credits to cover travel-related purchases. Some Bank of America travel cards also allow you to cover purchases like dining with your award statement credits.

With each card, and in fact with any Bank of America credit card, you also gain access to the Bank of America Travel Center , where you can search for travel deals and pay with cash or rewards. The site operates much like a travel search engine, similar to Expedia or Orbitz.

Bank of America credit card and debit card holders have access to a variety of partner offers and deals, but the travel rewards program still lacks travel transfer partners, which is where many travel rewards aficionados look for the best value.

However, as we’ll explain below, being a member of Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program could increase the value of the rewards you earn by 25 to 75 percent, making Bank of America’s somewhat limited travel rewards program more valuable.

How to earn Bank of America travel rewards points

The only thing you need to do to earn rewards is use your Bank of America card for eligible purchases; you don’t need to keep track of rotating bonus categories or activate offers in your Bank of America account to earn rewards. For some of the travel cards, you’ll earn more rewards in travel and dining categories, but there’s no need to track or apply for your rewards.

Additionally, Bank of America’s travel and dining categories are more extensive than those of many travel rewards cards, so you’ll be able to redeem your points for statement credit for everything from flights to zoo tickets.

How to redeem Bank of America travel rewards points

You can redeem rewards for a statement credit to cover eligible travel purchases (or dining purchases with the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card) at a value of 1 cent per point, so 2,500 points equals $25 in statement credit. Other redemption options include cash back as a check or direct deposit into an eligible Bank of America checking or savings account or a Merrill Cash Management Account , but at a significantly reduced value of .006 cents per point (therefore 2,500 points equals $15). You can also redeem points for gift cards, but that value will vary.

Travel credits and cash rewards redemptions require a minimum of 2,500 points and gift cards require at least 3,125 points to redeem.

How much are Bank of America travel rewards points worth?

Bank of America travel rewards are worth 1 cent per point when redeemed for statement credit to cover eligible purchases or to purchase travel through the travel portal, but the value goes down when redeemed for cash back (.006 cents each) and varies for gift card redemptions.

Since there isn’t an opportunity to boost value with transfer partners, the best value you can aim for is 1 cent per point. While it isn’t a top redemption value, the tradeoff is the flexibility and simplicity it offers.

How do Bank of America travel rewards compare to other points’ values?

In most cases, your Bank of America travel rewards points are worth 1 cent per point. Premium Rewards Elite cardholders can get a 20 percent boost for airfare bookings through the Travel Center when you pay with points, which means a flight that costs 20,000 points will require about 16,700 points thanks to the 20 percent bonus.

Keep in mind that the Premium Rewards Elite card charges a $550 annual fee, so that’s a hefty price for a 20 percent rewards bonus (although there are other benefits of the card, of course).

Issuers such as Chase and American Express offer similar boosts for some cardholders redeeming points through their travel portals — and on cards with lower annual fees. Additionally, those issuers also have transfer partners that can allow you to get more value for travel with partner airlines and hotels.

Bank of America doesn’t have transfer partners, so there isn’t an option for that extra redemption value. That said, if you’re a Preferred Rewards member, that may make up for the lack of travel partners, but it’s something you’d have to analyze on a case-by-case basis.

Who are Bank of America travel cards best for?

As noted, this travel rewards program is best if you want simplicity and flexibility in earning and redeeming travel rewards. The Bank of America travel cards allow you to use your rewards to cover eligible travel purchases or make purchases directly through the portal, but the redemption value isn’t stellar.

If you are a Bank of America Preferred Rewards program member, you’ll get much more value than other cardholders. This invitation-only program gives you access to banking services discounts and rewards-earning boosts and membership is based on the combined balance of qualifying Bank of America or Merrill Investment accounts. Here’s a look at the five tiers offered:

In this scenario, you get the rewards boost on your earnings, but the redemption options remain a fixed value.

Bank of America travel credit cards

If you’re in the market to pay off existing credit card debt or fund an upcoming purchase, this card can be a good option thanks to its 0 percent intro APR for 15 billing cycles on balance transfers made within the first 60 days and on purchases (followed by a variable APR between 18.24 percent and 28.24 percent).

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card

The Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card offers another level of travel rewards: 2X back on all travel and dining purchases and a flat 1.5X rate on everything else. The card also offers statement credits toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership every four years and an annual airline incidental credit. And with Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection perks, you can enjoy automatic room upgrades, late checkout, complimentary breakfast and more.

Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students

Although its features and benefits are minimal, the Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students can be a good entry-level card for students with little-to-no credit history. You’ll get 1.5X points on all purchases, plus the ability to redeem rewards for a statement credit on qualifying travel purchases.

There’s also a 0 percent intro APR on balances made in the first 60 days and on purchases for the first 15 billing cycles (followed by a variable APR between 18.24 percent and 28.24 percent), which can help students who have a large purchase on the horizon (or some existing debt) that they’d like to pay off over time (think textbooks or dorm supplies).

  • Rewards rate : 1.5X points on all purchases
  • Welcome bonus : 25,000 online bonus points after spending $1,000 in purchases within your first 90 days
  • Additional perks : No foreign transaction fees; zero-interest offer on purchases

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured credit card*

Travel rewards cards for people who are working to build their credit are rare. This one allows you to work on building your credit with responsible use while also earning some travel rewards.

This is a secured card , so you’ll need to provide a security deposit of at least $200 to establish your line of credit. While the card does offer rewards, any secured card should be viewed primarily as a means to improving your credit with consistently responsible use. In fact, Bank of America will periodically review your account and relationship with the bank overall to decide whether to return your security deposit.

  • Earn 1.5X points on all your purchases
  • $0 annual fee
  • Minimum $200 security deposit (up to $5,000) to establish you line of credit

Bank of America travel rewards frequently asked questions

Do bank of america travel rewards expire, can i share points with friends and family members, can you buy bank of america travel rewards points, the bottom line.

Bank of America’s travel rewards program isn’t as extensive as those of some other major issuers. But if your primary goal with travel rewards is simplicity and flexibility as compared to getting the best possible redemption value, Bank of America’s travel rewards program can deliver.

That said, if you’re at least a semi-frequent traveler, you’ll likely find better value from rewards programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards .

How we Choose

Bank of America has enhanced the Preferred Rewards program and launched a new premium travel rewards credit card, prompted by growing competition.

The content on this page is accurate as of the posting date; however, some of our partner offers may have expired. Please review our list of best credit cards , or use our CardMatch™ tool to find cards matched to your needs.

Bank of America is set on breaking into the luxury travel credit card space.

On Nov. 22, 2021, the bank launched the new Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite Credit Card aimed to compete with premium travel credit cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and The Platinum Card® from American Express . Right now, the product is only available via wealth managers and financial advisers.

Additionally, on Dec. 9, 2021, Bank of America announced that it is expanding the Preferred Rewards program, which is its loyalty program for high-net-worth customers. The program will now get two additional membership tiers for clients with more than $1 million and more than $10 million in assets with the company (including Merrill investment accounts), as well as new rewards and benefits.

On top of that, in the upcoming weeks, the bank will be launching a new loyalty program, Partner Rewards, for its debit and credit cardholders, which will allow the choice between credit card rewards and enhanced merchant benefits with eligible partners.

The new credit card product and the loyalty program enhancements mainly target high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth customers of Bank of America, even though the Premium Rewards Elite card will be available for digital applications to the general public in the near future, according to the issuer.

What the new Premium Rewards Elite card offers

The competition in the luxury travel rewards card niche has been continually growing in 2021, fueled by enhancements to the popular Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Platinum, as well as the recent launch of the exciting Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

Bank of America recognized the gap in its travel credit card product suite and responded with the launch of the Premium Rewards Elite credit card.

The card costs $550 per year and offers the following rewards and benefits:

  • 2 points per dollar on travel and dining
  • 1.5 points per dollar on general purchases
  • 24/7 full-service concierge
  • $300 annual airline incidentals credit
  • 20% savings when redeeming rewards for airfare through Bank of America’s travel site
  • $100 in credits to cover TSA PreCheck or Global Entry membership
  • $150 in annual lifestyle credits in categories such as streaming, rideshare, food delivery and fitness
  • Priority Pass Select lounge access
  • Access to Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection
  • No foreign transaction fees

“The outstanding travel and lifestyle perks of Premium Rewards Elite make it an exciting addition to our suite of award-winning credit cards,” said Jason Gaughan, credit card executive at Bank of America. “We’re proud to offer this new card designed to further reward and enhance the client experience.”

As stated by Bank of America on a press call, the card is currently being offered to clients by wealth managers and financial advisers but will become available digitally in February 2022.

What the enhanced Preferred Rewards program offers

The Preferred Rewards program , available to Bank of America clients with a minimum of $20,000 across Bank of America and Merrill accounts, previously had three tiers. The highest tier, Platinum Honors, was available for customers holding at least $100,000 in assets with the company.

The updated five-tier structure is aimed to benefit the bank’s higher-net-worth clients. Bank of America has added two new tiers, Diamond and Diamond Honors, for customers with over $1 million and $10 million in assets with the bank, respectively.

Diamond and Diamond Honors members will receive improved benefits, including the following:

  • 75% credit card rewards bonus on eligible Bank of America credit cards
  • 20% interest rate boost on Bank of America Advantage Savings
  • Mortgage interest rate reduction
  • HELOC interest rate reduction
  • Reduced annual fee with a Merrill Guided Investing account
  • Exclusive luxury and lifestyle benefits, such as customized events from luxury brands
  • Access to other personalized services

“These enhancements to our Preferred Rewards program reflect our ongoing commitment to rewarding clients for their relationship with us,” shared Randy Takian, head of wealth management banking and lending at Bank of America.

“Preferred Rewards program members already enjoy bonus points on card spending, discounts on home lending and fee waivers. The new Diamond and Diamond Honors tiers take the program to another level for our high net worth and ultra-high net worth clients,” said Takian.

What the new Partner Rewards program will offer

The Partner Rewards program, set to launch in the coming weeks, will provide more options for how cardholders redeem partner offers and credit card rewards.

Cardholders who enroll in Partner Rewards will be able to pick a Bank of America card to tie to their account in the program. Then, they’ll have an option to earn enhanced merchant benefits instead of their regular credit card rewards at eligible partners.

The first partner to join the program will be Shell, and cardholders will be able to choose between earning their standard card rewards or receiving a discount at Shell gas stations.

What the news from Bank of America means for you

With the changes to the Preferred Rewards program, Bank of America is rewarding the loyalty of its most high-earning clients. To a regular bank account or cardholder, however, these enhancements don’t offer any value.

The same goes for the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card. While the bank is planning to make it available to the public, it’s Preferred Rewards members who’ll benefit from it most. With the 75% rewards bonus, Platinum Honors, Diamond and Diamond Honors members will be able to earn 3.5 points per dollar on travel and dining purchases and 2.62 points per dollar on all other purchases.

For the rest of consumers who are interested in a premium travel rewards credit card, the Premium Elite Rewards doesn’t quite match the value offered by the competition.

For example, at $550 per year, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is a much more compelling offer with $300 in flexible annual travel credits, a 50% point-value boost when redeemed through Chase’s portal and more.

Further, the new Capital One Venture X only charges $395 per year and offers $300 in annual credits for travel booked with Capital One, a 10,000-mile annual bonus ($100 in value when redeemed for travel) and other desirable perks.

Additionally, both Capital One and Chase have transfer partners that allow cardholders to stretch the value of their rewards – something Bank of America doesn’t offer.

As for the Partner Rewards program, it’s yet to be determined how much value it can bring to cardholders, depending on which brands it will partner with and how compelling the partner offers will be.

Bottom line

Bank of America has doubled down on offering extra value to its wealthiest clients by restructuring the Preferred Rewards Program and offering new benefits to customers who hold more than $1 million in assets with the company.

Even the bank’s new premium travel card, the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card, will bring the most value to those in the highest tiers of the Preferred Rewards program.

For the rest interested in luxury rewards travel cards, competing credit card products may provide more robust rewards and desirable perks.

Traveling abroad? Understanding payment methods and how to avoid transaction fees

Understanding the different ways of paying can save you money and help your trip run more smoothly

Read, 4 minutes

Hidden costs and fees on your various cards can add up quickly in a foreign country, whether you’re withdrawing money from an ATM, buying souvenirs or settling your hotel bill. Many credit cards charge a foreign transaction fee—typically 2% to 3%—on every international purchase. And every trip to the ATM may also incur a fee. You can minimize or avoid fees by following these tips and resources—before you depart and while you’re traveling.

Article continues below

Credit cards are a widely accepted form of payment. They are easy to use, provide purchase-protection benefits and have favorable exchange rates. But some cards are better than others for international travel.

Find out if your card charges for foreign transactions either by calling the number on the card or checking your agreement. If it does, you may want to investigate applying for a new card that doesn’t. Also consider a credit card that will earn you rewards  for travel, dining or other purchases. Don’t wait to do this—the process of getting a new card can take six to eight weeks. And before applying, review any potential impact on your credit score .

You should also make sure your card has an EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa) chip. These cards, standard in more than 130 countries, are considered more secure than credit cards with magnetic stripes. If your card only has a magnetic stripe or signature, it may not work in the country you’re visiting.

While you’re there

It’s a good idea to have a cash-vs.-card strategy. One solid rule of thumb is to pay for frequent small purchases, such as coffee and snacks, with cash. Save your credit card for more expensive purchases, such as pricey gifts, restaurant tabs and hotel bills.

Many establishments frequented by tourists will give you a choice of paying in local currency or U.S. dollars. You’re almost always better off going with the local currency. And remember that your credit card usually has a more favorable exchange rate and lower fees than local merchants can offer.

Before you travel, set up alerts for unusual activity on your credit card. That way, you will be notified immediately by email, text message or through your mobile app if your bank sees anything questionable. For more travel tips, see our  checklist .

In many countries, merchants are moving to contactless payment. In fact, you may find that some stores and restaurants not only won’t take cash but may not even have a credit card reader.

Contactless payments are done through near-field communication (NFC) technology or quick response (QR) codes. NFC terminals at checkout counters use radio waves to read a physical credit card or one stored on a smartphone or smartwatch. QR codes can originate with the merchant or be stored on your phone. You might scan a merchant’s QR code with your phone’s camera and then tap on a link to complete the payment process. Or you might use an app to generate a QR code with your credit card information, and then the merchant scans it for payment.

A Digital Wallet  can help you navigate contactless payments. You will be able to pay in-store, online and in-app, receive payments and get cash from ATMs using only your smartphone.

Set up a Digital Wallet by adding credit or debit card information to your smartphone. You can do this through your mobile banking app or another pay app on your phone. If you are traveling to a country such as China, where QR code payments are common, make sure your app can generate QR codes.

The benefits of using a Digital Wallet go beyond the convenience of contactless payments and include:

Most experienced travelers will recommend arriving at your destination with enough local currency to last at least the first 24 hours of your trip. This will make it easier to pay for services such as luggage carts, taxis and tips.

To get an advantageous currency exchange rate, purchase currency through your bank before you leave. Generally, larger banks offer more favorable rates and lower fees than other conversion services, such as airport exchange desks or kiosks at the destination. Some banks let you order currency online or through their mobile app. Allow three to five days before you travel to receive the currency.

Learn how to order foreign currency from Bank of America before you travel.

Did you know?

Currency exchange rates constantly change depending on markets as well as economic and geopolitical factors. Individual rates among banks, hotels, kiosks and other currency exchange businesses also vary due to profit, fees and other markups.

Even though it’s good to have cash on hand, try to limit ATM withdrawals. Using an international ATM can trigger unexpected fees, and some banks cap how much you can withdraw each day. You can minimize fees by using the ATMs in your home bank’s network or at a bank that partners with it. And remember that if you use your credit card to withdraw cash from ATMs, you may be charged cash advance fees and interest.

Find Bank of America’s international ATM partners.

Some international ATMs support only four-digit PINs and do not have letters on their keypads. Be sure your PIN doesn’t start with a zero and know it by its numbers.

If you have excess foreign cash at the end of your trip, you may be able to apply it toward your hotel bill or final meal. If you’d rather give the money to charity, look for donation bins at the airport. Or think about giving it to friends who plan to travel. You can also exchange foreign cash back into U.S. dollars, though the exchange rate will be different, you may pay a fee and banks typically won’t buy back coins.

How to complete a bank of america travel notice online.

by The Travel Sisters | Mar 12, 2017 | Credit Cards | 1 comment

One of the things I do before I travel, is to let my banks that issued my credit or ATM cards know that I will be traveling abroad.  While you can call your bank, some banks make it easy to quickly notify them of your travel plans online. Fortunately, Bank of America has an online travel notification form which makes it really easy to let them know of your travel plans.

When Should You Notify Bank of America of Your Travel Plans?

According to BofA, a travel notice can be set no more than 60 days prior to departure and can last for up to 90 days from the first day of your trip. Also, you can only have one travel notice set at a time.

While I usually complete travel notifications only when traveling internationally, the form also allows you to notify Bank of America when traveling to another state in the US. If you will be charging a lot of things on your credit card, it does not hurt to take a minute to complete the form.

How to Set Up a Bank of America Travel Notification Online

Log into your bankofamerica.com account and hover your mouse over “Help & Support” on the top right.

You will see a few options – click on “Set Travel Notice” and the Travel notification form will come up.

If you click on “Help & Support” you can reach the travel notification form either by clicking on “Set Travel Notice” under  “Common Topics” or by clicking under “Travel Information”:

Complete, the Travel Notice form. You can complete the form for either domestic travel or international travel. The form even has a box where you can provide details of your trip.

While some people don’t notify their banks before travel and they don’t have any issues, I always make sure to complete an online travel notification form online.  It only takes a minute and it is worth it to avoid getting your credit card declined in a foreign country.

Travel recovery: Bumps along the way

Residual pent-up demand for cruises and international trips is helping drive ongoing travel spending.

Headshot of Anna Zhou

Taylor Bowley

Key takeaways

  • Strong travel spending was a key driver of the rebound in consumer services spending last year. However, it seems to be softening from very elevated levels in recent months. Has the strong, pent-up demand for travel run its course?
  • The short answer is, it depends. Spending for categories that recovered more quickly during the pandemic, such as lodging, seems to have already peaked, while spending for the late-recovery sectors such as cruises continues to run hot. Airline spending appears to be falling somewhere in between.
  • Similarly, we find demand for international destinations and travel spend among older generations remaining strong as both started their recovery later in the pandemic. In our view, residual pent-up demand from these categories could provide some offset to weakness elsewhere and support overall travel spending in the coming months.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Bank of America Travel Rewards: Which should beginner travelers get?

Ryan Wilcox

Editor's Note

If you're jumping into the travel rewards game, picking which credit card to start with can be overwhelming. There are a lot of competitive options, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

In this guide, I will walk through two popular beginner travel credit cards — the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card . Both offer an entry point into earning travel rewards, but which is best for your wallet?

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Bank of America Travel Rewards comparison

Before we dive deeper into how these cards stack up against each other, let's run through a quick overview of each card's details.

*Point value is based on TPG calculations and is not provided or reviewed by the issuer.

Sapphire Preferred vs. BofA Travel Rewards welcome offer

The Chase Sapphire Preferred clearly has a superior bonus in terms of value. You'll receive 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening, which is worth up to $1,200 according to TPG valuations .

By comparison, you'll only get 25,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days of account opening (a $250 value) from the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card .

However, something to keep in mind here is the spending requirements. While you must spend $4,000 in the first three months to earn the Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus, you'll only need to spend $1,000 in the first 90 days with the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card.

At the end of the day, the value of the bonus doesn't matter if you can't reasonably hit the spending requirements. For those with smaller budgets, the Bank of America Travel Rewards sign-up bonus might be the more attainable (and therefore more beneficial) option — though be sure to check out our guide on reaching minimum spending thresholds for tips on how to hit a higher requirement.

Winner : Sapphire Preferred.

Sapphire Preferred vs. BofA Travel Rewards benefits

bank of america upcoming travel

Neither of these cards is a premium travel card , which means they offer comparatively few additional benefits.

That said, the Chase Sapphire Preferred stands ahead in this category, as it does offer cardholders at least one complimentary year of DashPass service, which gives you $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible DoorDash food delivery and takeout purchases (must activate by Dec. 31, 2024).

You'll also get a $50 annual hotel statement credit for reservations booked through the Chase travel portal, plus a solid lineup of credit card protections , including trip cancellation/interruption insurance, primary car rental coverage, baggage delay insurance, trip delay reimbursement, travel and emergency assistance services, purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

On the other hand, the Bank of America Travel Rewards card is much more limited, though — like the Sapphire Preferred — it is a Visa Signature card, so that will provide some benefits .

Earning points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. BofA Travel Rewards

Once again, the Chase Sapphire Preferred comes out ahead in the earning department. You'll earn 3 points per dollar on dining and 2 points per dollar on travel purchases, plus 5 points per dollar on Lyft purchases (through March 2025).

On the other hand, the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card earns 1.5 points per dollar across all purchases. However, preferred cardholders can boost this earning rate significantly. If you are an existing Bank of America customer with enough money stashed away with the bank to qualify for the Preferred Rewards program , you can earn anywhere from 1.87 points per dollar to 2.62 points per dollar on all purchases.

Those who are Platinum Honors Preferred Rewards members (meaning you'll earn 2.62 points per dollar on all purchases) might end up getting more value from earning this higher flat rate across all purchases in the long term.

Winner: Sapphire Preferred.

Redeeming points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. BofA Travel Rewards

Another major difference between the two cards is the redemption options.

The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card earns fixed-value points, like cash back on eligible purchases. You can redeem your Bank of America Travel Rewards points at a value of 1 cent apiece as a statement credit to cover travel and dining purchases. Otherwise, you'll get 0.6 cents value from each point by requesting a check or deposit from the bank.

With the Sapphire Preferred, you can redeem your points at a 25% bonus for travel when you book through the Chase travel portal, plus you get many more options when transferring points (see below).

Transferring points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. BofA Travel Rewards

The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers a lot more flexibility in its redemption options. You can transfer points at a 1:1 rate to one of Chase's 14 valuable transfer partners . At a minimum, you can get a 1.25-cent value from your points through the Chase portal, but transferring to the right partner could get you even more value.

While there's something to be said about the simplicity of Bank of America's redemption process, Chase still takes the cake with more potential value and flexibility.

Should I get the Sapphire Preferred or BofA Travel Rewards?

On paper, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is certainly the more valuable credit card. It comes with a higher sign-up bonus, a more robust earning rate (unless you are one of the few who have over $100,000 in eligible Bank of America banking or investment accounts to qualify for Platinum Honors Preferred Rewards status), more value and flexibility in redemption options and more travel protections.

However, that doesn't automatically mean it's the better card for you .

For starters, the Chase Sapphire Preferred comes with a $95 annual fee. While many will be able to easily offset that cost with the Chase Sapphire Preferred's earning rates and other benefits, beginners with small budgets may want to start with a no-annual-fee credit card like the Bank of America Travel Rewards card.

Something else to consider is that the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card is great for beginners who do not want to worry about maximizing redemption options or varied bonus categories. You're earning a flat rewards rate across every purchase, no matter what.

And then, those rewards can be redeemed at a fixed rate as a statement credit. It's simple and easy, which may appeal to beginners who feel overwhelmed at the idea of transfer partners and travel portal redemptions.

Bottom line

While both may be considered starter travel credit cards , each appeals to a different audience. For those who hope to build a robust travel credit card strategy and learn about how to maximize transfer partners and card pairings, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is a great starting place.

But if the thought of navigating transferring points to a specific airline and juggling different bonus categories and temporary perks makes you break out into hives, the simplicity of the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card makes it an excellent choice.

At the end of the day, it's all about deciding which type of travel credit card meets your specific wants and needs.

When it comes to redeeming your Bank of America travel rewards, your options may vary depending on the card you have.

Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card and Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students

With the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card and the Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students, you can use your points for:

  • Cash back in the form of a check or direct deposit to an eligible Bank of America or Merrill account
  • A statement credit to cover eligible travel-related purchases

Unlike with other travel rewards programs, you can use your eligible card to book travel with any eligible providers, and Bank of America’s list of qualifying travel purchases is extensive. In addition to airlines, hotels, car rentals and eligible transit, travel-related purchases also include purchases made with eligible cruise lines, parking garages, travel agencies, tourist attractions, art galleries, amusement parks and more.

From there, you can redeem your points for a travel credit statement through your Bank of America account. However, note that you’ll need at least $25 worth of points to redeem for a travel credit.

Bank of America Premium Rewards credit card

The Bank of America Premium Rewards credit card lets you cash in your rewards for:

  • Travel bookings through the Bank of America Travel Center
  • Cash back in the form of a statement credit or a direct deposit to an eligible Bank of America or Merrill account

Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite Credit Card

With the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite Credit Card, you can redeem your points for:

  • Travel, experiences, event tickets and more through our Bank of America’s Concierge service

How to maximize Bank of America travel rewards points

To get the most of your travel rewards points with Bank of America, you should try to be as strategic as you can. When you go to redeem points, consider the ways you may be able to earn more points on your spending and any ways you can maximize your rewards .

Join the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program

One major way to earn more Bank of America travel rewards involves signing up for the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program . Doing so can net you an additional 25 percent to 75 percent more in rewards for each dollar you spend. However, note that you do need to meet certain qualifications to enroll in this program, including:

  • An active, eligible Bank of America checking account
  • A three-month average combined balance of $20,000 or more in eligible Bank of America accounts and/or Merrill investment accounts

Also, keep in mind that the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program offers additional perks like savings boosters and loan discounts for members with cash on deposit. The following chart shows how much more you could earn in rewards as a member, as well as how much you need to keep in eligible accounts to qualify for each tier.

While the minimum balance requirements are high, the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program can help you earn considerably more points on your spending if you qualify. For example, Bank of America Premium Rewards credit card members in the Platinum Honors tier have the potential to earn up to 3.5X points for every dollar spent on travel and dining purchases and up to 2.62X points on other purchases.

Also, it’s worth noting that there is one more Bank of America Preferred Rewards program tier, Diamond Honors.

Compare pricing in the travel portal

Keep in mind that the Bank of America Travel Center lets you make travel bookings with over 200,000 hotels and resorts and more than 200 airlines, among other options. Since some Bank of America travel rewards credit cards let you redeem your points for either travel-related statement credits or travel booked through the Bank of America Travel Center, you should compare the prices offered in the travel portal with other travel sites. By comparing prices, you can make sure you get the best deal.

Pick a card with an annual fee

Finally, make sure to think about your goals before you sign up for a travel credit card from this issuer. After all, a card with an annual fee comes with more benefits and perks. For example, when you pay the $95 annual fee for the Bank of America Premium Rewards card, you’ll get higher rewards rates on travel and dining spending, up to a $100 annual credit for incidental airline expenses to cover eligible costs and up to a $100 application fee credit toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership every four years. All of this could easily leave you “ahead” in a financial sense.

The bottom line

Bank of America travel rewards can work differently depending on the card you sign up for, so make sure to compare all the rewards card options available before you decide on a card. In the meantime, spend some time comparing cards from this issuer to travel rewards credit cards from other major issuers. You may find that Bank of America has what you’re looking for in a travel rewards card, but you’ll never know for sure unless you check.

Americans are traveling abroad in droves.

The number of U.S. citizens flying to international destinations reached nearly 6.5 million passengers in March, according to the International Trade Administration. That’s the highest March total in over five years and shows that the post-pandemic “revenge travel” trend is the new normal.

It wasn’t just March, which usually sees a spike in international departures for spring break. In every month of 2024 so far, more Americans left the country than last year and 2019. These trends point to a blockbuster summer for overseas travel.

Nearly half of Americans (45%) plan to travel by air and/or stay in a hotel this summer and expect to spend $3,594 on average, on these expenses, according to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, conducted online by The Harris Poll and commissioned by NerdWallet.

That's despite rising travel prices that have caused some hesitancy among would-be travelers. About 22% of those choosing not to travel this summer cite inflation making travel too expensive as a reason for staying home, according to the poll.

So where are traveling Americans going? And what does it mean for those looking to avoid crowds of tourists and higher travel prices?

New travel patterns

Nearly every region in the world saw an increase in U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2023, according to International Trade Administration data. Only the Middle East saw a decline of 9%. Yet not every region saw the same year-over-year bump. U.S. visitors to Asia saw a 33% jump, while Oceania and Central America each saw a 30% increase.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 only tells part of the story, however. The new patterns really emerge when comparing international travel trends to 2019. For example, Central America received 50% more U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2019. Nearly 1.5 million Americans visited Mexico, up 39% compared with before the pandemic. That’s almost as many visitors as the entire continent of Europe, which has seen a more modest 10% increase since 2019.

Only Canada and Oceania saw fewer visitors in March 2024 than in 2019, suggesting that interest in these locations has not rebounded. Indeed, the trends indicate a kind of tourism inertia from COVID-19 pandemic-era lockdowns: Those destinations that were more open to U.S. visitors during the pandemic, such as Mexico, have remained popular, while those that were closed, such as Australia, have fallen off travelers’ radars.

Price pressures

How these trends play out throughout the rest of the year will depend on a host of factors. Yet, none will likely prove more important than affordability. After months of steadiness, the cost of travel, including airfare, hotels and rental cars, has begun to sneak up again.

About 45% of U.S. travelers say cost is their main consideration when planning their summer vacation, according to a survey of 2,000 Americans by the travel booking platform Skyscanner.

That’s likely to weigh further on U.S. travelers’ appetite for visiting expensive destinations such as Europe, while encouraging travel to budget-friendly countries. It could also depress overall international travel as well, yet so far, Americans seem to be traveling more.

For those looking to avoid crowds while maintaining a budget, Skyscanner travel trends expert Laura Lindsay offered a recommendation many of us might need help finding on a map.

“Albania has been on the radar of travelers looking for something different,” Lindsay said. "Most people have yet to discover it, but flights and tourism infrastructure are in place, and there are fewer crowds in comparison to trending European destinations like Italy, Greece, or Portugal.”

On the flip side, American travelers looking to avoid crowds of compatriots would do well to avoid Japan, which has seen a staggering 50% increase in U.S. tourists between March 2019 and 2024.

Bank of America lays out the exact scenario that could finally pop the stock market's AI bubble

  • Bank of America says the ongoing "anything but bonds" bull market has led to a very top-heavy stock market.
  • The firm is watching real 10-year yields and credit spreads for signals of when that AI-led rally could end.
  • BofA says higher yields and tighter spreads could sound recession alarms and spur a stock sell-off.

Insider Today

Bank of America has coined a phrase for what's going on in markets right now, calling it an "anything but bonds" bull run.

The firm notes that in the fourth quarter of 2023, stocks and crypto led the way. In the first three months of 2024, it was commodities and... well, still crypto. And so far in the second quarter it's been the US dollar's time to shine.

While this has been lucrative for well-positioned traders across asset classes, BofA warns it's a byproduct of immense government spending, and could end up unwinding if a few key conditions are met.

The key piece is the cohort of mega-cap tech companies that have long dominated stock-market performance, largely because of their affiliation with AI. BofA says the "anything but bonds" rally has set a particular fire under the market's biggest stocks, with the top 10 accounting for a record 34% of S&P 500 market cap, as reflected in the chart below.

But BofA doesn't see this high-flying bull run lasting forever. The firm outlines a scenario that could derail the rally and finally dent mega-cap growth-stock leadership: real 10-year yields climb into the 2.5%-to-3% region, and/or higher yields combine with higher credit spreads to stoke fears of recession.

The real 10-year yield is currently at 2.28%, meaning it has further to go before it triggers an eventual sell-off in the types of mega-cap names heavily weighted in major indexes. Per the chart below, it hasn't exceeded 2.5% since October 2023, and even then, only briefly.

There's also the consideration that mega-cap tech is no longer moving higher like an ever-unstoppable monolith. There has been bifurcation in the AI-focused Magnificent Seven stocks as Tesla and Apple have gotten off to rocky starts to 2024, while juggernauts like Nvidia and Microsoft have shown no signs of slowing. Then there's Meta, which was up 40%-plus this year headed into earnings, but took a sizable share-price hit because it's not growing quite fast enough to please investors.

These divergences have reduced concentration risk in a way that could dampen any eventual sell-off. In the meantime, if you subscribe to BofA's view, you should be watching the 10-year real yield for a signal of when any such downturn is coming.

Bank of America is coming to the Milwaukee area with 5 sites--including a North Shore location

bank of america upcoming travel

Bank of America , among the nation's largest financial networks, plans to develop a North Shore location that would anchor a new building that includes apartments.

The 3,500-square-foot bank would be at 131 W. Silver Spring Drive, Whitefish Bay, under a proposal recently approved by the village Plan Commission.

Bank of America would be on the street level of a three-story mixed-use development.

The building, proposed by developer Thomas Schafer , would include 16 apartments, 1,500 square feet of additional commercial space, and 28 spaces of underground parking. There also would be eight covered surface parking spaces for the bank.

The development is to replace a two-story apartment building.

The bank doesn't require additional village approvals. But the larger building it would anchor does require review by the Architectural Review Commission as well as Community Development Authority approval, said Paul Boening, village manager.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bank of America plans to open five locations, which it calls "financial centers," in the Milwaukee area in 2025, along with three Madison locations.

That's according to a June 2023 announcement − which didn't provide details on those locations. Milwaukee officials last year approved a Bank of America branch at 7630 W. Good Hope Road.

A Bank of America media representative couldn't be immediately reached Monday for more information.

The Whitefish Bay location is near several other newer banks and credit unions that have opened on Silver Spring Drive, in Whitefish Bay, and on nearby Port Washington Road, in Glendale.

Those branches keep opening even as more Americans use websites and smart phone apps to pay bills, deposit checks and transfer cash.

Bank of America said last year its expansion to Wisconsin is part of growth plans that will place it in more than 200 markets across 39 states by 2026.

"Although more clients are using our digital banking capabilities, many still visit our centers for in-person conversations about some of their more complex financial needs," said Aron Levine, Bank of America president of preferred banking.

"Our redesigned centers make it easy for them to meet with professionals for tailored solutions and advice on their life priorities and financial goals," Levine said, in the June announcement.

Other banks expanding in the Milwaukee area include Wausau-based Peoples State Bank, which will open a downtown branch, at 788 N. Jefferson St., this summer, according to Megan McCoy, vice president and marketing director.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly reported that the Whitefish Bay Bank of America branch appeared to be the first to obtain municipal approval in the Milwaukee area.
