We took the Picoteo lover tour and it was their newest tour offered. Our guides Simon and Julia were knowledgeable and friendly. We stopped by 5 different styled, less touristy restaurants in the Eixample area and had a good variety of dishes (meat, salad, seafood, desserts) and wine. We were full by the 4th restaurant as they served around 12 dishes during the tour. We had a great time and it really gave us a great introduction into the Tapas scene in 3 hours!!

This was my first ever food tour, and it was such a highlight of my trip to Spain. There are a lot of touristy restaurants in Spain, and I really wanted to find where the locals eat and drink. I also really wanted to eat and drink great Spanish food and wines. This tour takes you to really exceptional places. It was a lot of fun, a lot of food and alcohol, and a lot of wonderful memories.

We'd never taken a food tour before, and based on the excellent Tripadvisor reviews, we chose the Picoteo Lover Tour. Our guide showed us around 5 fantastic bars which were super authentic and not touristy, and the food and drink was incredibe at each! The evening was like spending time with a friend who had lots of local knowledge about food, drink and Spain. It was such a once-in-a-lifetime experience and made our holiday to Spain perfect!!

This was by far my favorite part of my visit to Spain! What a great way to sample all the local cuisine while getting a bit of history and great company. It is a good way to sample a few of the main dishes and drinks in some of the best places in the city. We went hungry and left absolutely stuffed.

This was an excellent experience. My first time and I was worried at first about the cost and being a big of a big eater. It is definitely worth it as you get to go to 5 different "local" locations without the tourist crowd. By our final stop we all had as much beautiful food as we could get. Our group was diverse and very fun. I would have stayed out later with several of the groups were it not for an early flight. I would recommend this tour and do it again myself!

But, in general, I would say that the average tapas and wine tour in Barcelona lasts for about 3 hours and costs about $80 – $120 USD.

That said, the 10 specific tours I have mentioned above range from $55 USD (the Cocktail class) to almost $500 USD for the full-day tours into the countryside!

So as you can see, there’s a wide range of options and there’s a pretty good chance of finding an experience that matches your interests and budget!

After reading the previous section, you might be thinking, “Oh, heck no!” First of all, that’s totally fair. I also cannot afford a $500 tour presently.

Fortunately for both of us, there are plenty of more budget-friendly options available! But, if the price isn’t enough to persuade you to take a tapas tour… here are some other reasons why I wholeheartedly believe wine and tapas tours in Barcelona are worth it.

First, Barcelona has some of the best tapas in the world! A tour allows you to sample a wide range of specialties all in one go, without having to research each place. You get instant access to all the local favorites that the majority of tourists miss.

Second, going with a tour group means that you get access to an expert guide who knows the history and culture behind Spanish cooking. This not only makes for a much more memorable experience but also gives you the opportunity to pick up some useful tips on hidden gems to visit during the rest of your stay in the city.

In addition, these tours are designed to be social — so they’re an awesome way to meet locals and other travelers alike. You’ll be able to chat with your tour guide, ask questions, and make some new friends in the process!

• 📆  Schedule tours early:  I recommend scheduling your food tour as early in your trip as possible! This way you can get an overview of the city and can ask your guide for insider details on places to visit during the rest of your stay! Plus, it’s always fun to start on a high note!
• 🍴  Have dietary restrictions? : Be sure to tell the food tour guide in advance of any dietary restrictions and allergies you have. They can normally make accommodations as long as you let them know ahead of time.
• 🍷 Don’t drink on an empty stomach: As I mentioned earlier, for more wine-focused tours like the Cocktail class or day tours, be sure to eat something ahead of time! Excessive amounts of alcohol on an empty stomach is not fun… *from my personal experience 🫠*

There are literally hundreds of varieties of tapas available to try in Barcelona. But, some of the crowd-favorites include Jamón Iberico de Bellota, Bombas, Patatas Bravas, and Pintxos.

Barcelona is huge and there are so many things to do in the city. I recommend spending at least 4 days, ideally 5 or more in the city if you can. It’s definitely not one of those cities you want to only spend a day or two in!

History of Tapas: A Kingly Tradition

There’s nothing more synonymous with Spanish cuisine than tapas, the tradition of eating small dishes as an appetiser, snack or in combination to form a main meal of the day.

In fact the influence of this tradition can be seen in restaurants all around the world, as small plates and tasting dishes have become global food trend.

As a style of eating it certainly has its advantages… after all, what could be better than mixing and matching all the glorious taste sensations of the diverse regions of Spain for supper?

The word ‘tapa’ in Spanish means ‘lid’, and the ‘s’ simply denominates its plural form. There are many cited origins for the tradition of eating tapas, and how they got their name, with the most romantic featuring  King Alfonso X  in a starring role. The King, also known as Alfonso the Wise, was gallivanting around his kingdom many moons ago, when he decided to visit an inn and duly ordered a  beer . The innkeeper served this refreshing pint of ale with a small complimentary dish of food on top of the glass.

The King thought it was such a good idea that he ordered all inns throughout Spain to serve food with any alcoholic drink by decree of law. A great legend, although perhaps a more probable origin is that these ‘lids’ were a custom used by Andalusian folk, in the sweltering south, to keep the flies off their sweet sherry.

Whatever the truth of the matter, the custom is widespread across the country and it’s inevitable that you’ll encounter tapas menus on your visit. To help you make sense of this intriguing gastronomic phenomenon we’ve compiled a list of typical dishes from Spain and Catalonia below, followed by a guide to some of the best tapas bars and restaurants in Barcelona – plus some suggested food tours for those that want to go further.

19 Tapas Dishes (incl. Must-trys!)

Tapas is such an integral part of Spanish culture that almost every rudimentary bar will have some basic offerings on the counter, whilst many restaurants have a tapas menu or specialise solely in the saucer-sized snacks. There are far too many to list in one article, but here are some of the classic dishes you can expect to find in any traditional-style bar in Barcelona… naturally we’ve included many of our faves. Unfortunately for more ethical eaters, virtually all feature meat or seafood, so vegans may have to look away now!

Bomba (must-try!)

A fat ball of mashed potato stuffed with meat, cheese or veg and covered in bread crumbs,  La Bomba  is the classic dish of the Barceloneta district, so be sure to pop into a bar and try one when you’re on your way back from the beach. Usually spicy.

Boquerones en vinagre

To the uncultured eater,  calamares  resemble onion rings, but are in fact circles of squid in batter. Chewy but delicious, and best with a squeeze of lemon. If you don’t like batter, look out for  calamares a la plancha , ie. grilled (even better IMHO).

Chipirones (must-try!)

Baby squid battered and fried, these little critters make look disgusting but they might just be Barcelona Life’s favourite traditional tapa. Best drizzled with a squeeze of lemon and digested at a chiringuito (beach bar) somewhere on the Costa Brava.

Chorizo al vino (must-try!)

An editorial fave, and no wonder if you consider that a) Spanish cured sausage is the best in the world b) what could be better than adding a slosh of red wine?! In some parts of Spain you can also try  chorizo al sidra , or sausage cooked in cider!

Croquetas (must-try!)

Ensaladilla rusa

‘Russian salad’ is a firm favourite in Spain, and typically one of the only tapas with a high vegetable count – so good for balancing all those meat dishes. Potatoes, eggs and mayonnaise are the main ingredients with beans, carrots and chopped gherkins common additions. (Not a personal fave if I’m being honest!).

Jamon Iberico (must-try!)

Mejillones (must-try!)

Morcilla (must-try!)

This dark, suspicious looking meat dish divides opinion… it’s the Spanish version of blood pudding. Sometimes its served on its own, other times with  patatas bravas , eggs or in stuffed peppers. Our verdict – it’s freaking delicious!

Pa amb tomaquet (must-try!)

Patatas bravas (must-try!)

Chunks of potato chips served with spicy mayonnaise, this decidedly unhealthy snack is an essential side plate for any meal in Spain. Virtually every tapas restaurant in Barcelona serves their own take on them. The quality typically varies between ‘good’ and ‘unbelievably tasty!’

Pimientos del Padron

Pulpo Gallego (must-try!)

Another dish hailing from Spain’s seafood capital, Galicia, pulpo gallego is boiled octopus seasoned with olive oil, salt and paprika. Usually one of the more expensive tapas on any given menu, few regret the extra few euros.

Not to be confused with Mexican tortilla, Spanish tortilla is not a thin flatbread but a fat omelette made with egg, potato and onion. It’s the type of dish that can vary from ordinary to heavenly – usually the latter if homemade by your Spanish friend’s mum.

We’ve mostly focused on the classics that you might find in any neighbourhood joint, but an increasing number of modern, hip and fancy places are adding their own creations to menus across the city… so our advice is just be adventurous! These culinary delights are a fundamental part of Spanish gastronomic culture and are very popular in the city. Tapas can include a variety of dishes, such as “patatas bravas”, “tortilla de patatas”, “gambas”, “anchoas”, “calamares a la romana”, and “pulpo a la gallega”, among others.

Tapas are not a complete meal, but rather a snack, a small portion of anything that is usually served with a drink. Eating tapas is much more than eating, it represents a lifestyle, it is a social activity, a way to bring people together to chat, laugh and enjoy the variety of local dishes.

“Tapear” is to take a route through the bars and have a drink with a tapa each time. Any time is a good time for tapas tasting. Some people usually go to eat tapas between 17h and 20h, before dinner. However, many people go for tapas at noon, before lunch, especially on weekends or vacations.

Some typical tapas that you can taste in Barcelona:

Pan con Tomate : The quintessential Catalan tapa. White bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled in oil and salt. A perfect accompaniment to the rest of your tapas.

Patatas Bravas : The fried potatoes of Spain. Small fried cubes of potato served with two sauces – alioli (a garlic mayonnaise) and a spicy tomato sauce.

Chipirones : I have never seen these fried squid outside of Spain. They are small and you will get a plate full of them.

Anchovies : These anchovies are not normally the very salty type you may be used to. They are served in vinegar with parsley and garlic. Delicious.

Russian Salad : Not the healthiest of salads. It is a heavy dish composed of potatoes, peas, hard boiled eggs and other vegetables, covered with mayonnaise.

Croquettes : Croquettes are often made with ham, fish, chicken or spinach. They are made of a kind of béchamel sauce, breaded and fried.

All accompanied by a good beer, one of the great Spanish wines or your favorite soft drink.

Going out for “ tapas in Barcelona ” is a great gastronomic and fun experience that you will surely come back to repeat during your stay in Barcelona.

Does the guide speak good English? Yes, even if our tour guides are all locals, they speak very fluent English, and they won’t have any problem understanding you.

Do we finish at the meeting point? No, but the guide will always be happy to give you the indications to go back to the meeting point or to your hotel.
