How To Stay Connected in Japan

Japan is super stingy when it comes to their wifi and sharing internet. They’ve gotten a little bit better since I’ve lived there, but not much. I recommend  you book an e-sim card and download it directly to your phone. If you don’t have that capability, you can order a 4G wifi box ahead of time and pick it up at any airport you designate in Japan.

Most tourists land at Narita or Haneda Airport when they arrive in Japan. So you may be wondering how to go to Okinawa from Tokyo or how to go to Okinawa?

How To Get To Okinawa From Tokyo

Japan’s Okinawa island is just a two and half hour plane ride from Tokyo. By plane is the best way to travel to Okinawa. It’s actually closer to Taiwan than it is to mainland Japan.

How To Get Around Okinawa

Most flights go directly into Naha which is the international airport. Okinawa is not public transportation friendly. You will need to rent a car for your Okinawa travel. If you’re only planning on staying in Naha as an Okinawa tourist, then disregard this. Naha has a monorail that will take you as far as Urasoe. If you want to go to other stunning beach locations around the island, then I highly suggest you make renting a car a priority. You will need a valid driver’s license and an IDP in order to rent a car in Okinawa . Alternatively, if you’re a YOLO kind of person or you forgot to get your IDP, you can get the Okinawa Bus Pass to cart you around wherever you need to go.

I lived in Okinawa for three years. My wealth of knowledge is golden. I wasn’t in the military, I speak the language, have local friends, and lived out in actual Japanese society. So my friends, never fear because Gina Bear knows how to make the best of a trip to Japan’s island paradise.

1. What is the best month to visit Okinawa?/ Best time to visit Okinawa Japan?

The best months to visit Okinawa is August through October. This is so you can avoid the intense summer heat. However, September is peak typhoon season.

2. Is Okinawa humid?

Okinawa has a subtropical climate, so yes it is very humid. Sometimes the humidity is so strong, it will feel like you’re swimming through the air and all you want to do is hide in the actual AC unit or go to the beach and dunk yourself profusely. And I’m talking the most unattractive swass during Okinawa in summer.

3. Is Okinawa worth visiting?

The simple answer is… Yes, you ding dong. Visit Okinawa! This beautiful island in the middle of the sea is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever lived in my life. Okinawa is so worth the damn visit and if you don’t go, I hope you suffer from FOMO for the rest of your life.

4. What is Okinawa known for? / What is Okinawa famous for?

If the Karate Kid starring Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, then good job, you get a gold star. While the character of Mr. Miyagi does come from Okinawa, the majority of the film was made in Hawaii. Whomp. Whomp.

In my honest opinion, Okinawa is best known for two things — Okinawa time and the Okinawa diet. The traditional diet there is so high in yummy vitamins and nutrients, the people in Okinawa are known to have the longest life spans in the world.

5. What is Okinawa time?

Now when I talk about Okinawa time… I mean everything is done slowly and whenever people feel like it. In other words, this shit can drive you crazy. If I were you, I’d avoid public transport at all costs and just rent a car while you’re there.

6. Is Okinawa different from the rest of Japan?

Okinawa is also known for other things such as their stunning beaches, mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean culture, as well as their own unique culture. Before it became part of Japan, Okinawa was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom and had its own culture, language and traditions.

7. How far is Okinawa from Tokyo?

Would you believe me if I told you Okinawa is closer to Taiwan that it is to mainland Japan? A flight from Tokyo to Okinawa will be hour 3.5 hours.

8. How many days do you need in Okinawa?

Whatchu talking about days, fool? Nah, you need at least two to three weeks to really uncover the stunning beauty and nature Okinawa has to offer to the world.

9. Does it get cold in Okinawa, Japan?

You may think being closer to the equator guarantees warmer weather, but my friend, that is sooooo not the case. In the winter months, it can drop down to 50 Fahrenheit or 15 Celsius. Winter in Okinawa starts in November and ends around the end of February when the temperatures start increasing to 70 Fahrenheit or 21 Celsius in March.

And yes, many were the days I froze my butt off because the humidity makes everything so much colder.

Okinawa is located in the Pacific Ocean. It’s located about 300 miles off the coast of mainland Japan.

The best thing to do in Okinawa is go to the beaches. The subtropical weather is perfect for enjoying them. I also recommend going snorkeling and participating in the local culture by painting a shisa or coral dyeing .

The best season to travel Okinawa is autumn, winter, or spring. Summer in Okinawa is very hot and humid. Unless you’re used to that kind of weather I don’t recommend going.

What To Pack For Okinawa

Japan is super STRICT when it comes to luggage restrictions and regulations. So if you’re coming from the US… This is terrible news for you. Travel essentials for what to pack to Okinawa:

• Unlocked phone  –  You can book a sim card here.  Alternatively, if you don’t have an unlocked phone,  you can also use this portable wifi router .
• Toothpaste  – Japanese toothpaste sucks PERIODT. Bring your own from home.
• Important documents  – Bring any important medical documents in case something happens. 
• Passport  – This should be a given, but please don’t forget it. Make a copy of your passport and hide it in your suitcase and leave one on your fridge at home.
• Credit/Debit Cards  – Big shopping malls and most restaurants take credit cards now.
• Cash – Japan is still primarily a cash is king society.
• Medication  – Don’t forget your important medicine because I guarantee it will be a nightmare for you to navigate the hospital and then go to a pharmacy to try and get it.

How much money do I need to travel in Okinawa? This is a simple Okinawa travel expenses break down. It honestly depends on you, what you like, and what you’re into. In this Okinawa tourist guide, I will be covering the basics like car rental, accommodation, food and tourist activities.

As one of the poorest prefectures in Okinawa, it is considerably cheaper than mainland Japan. But remember, Okinawa is still Japan and it can get quite pricey. One week expenses in Okinawa will go as follows:

• Car Rental – $250
• Accommodation – $320 – $630
• Food – $182
• Special activities – $300

Where To Stay in Okinawa

Most people who visit Okinawa tend to stay in the Naha area. While staying in Naha is great because you can easily get to the outer islands, there are so many other great places to be.

• Aqua Citta (Naha) – This upscale hotel offers pristine views of the city from its rooftop pool and Tomari Port. Aqua Citta is 15 minutes away from Naha Airport.
• Hotel Nikko Alivila (Yomitan) – With its enormous pool, beautiful private beach, stunning views and exceptional service, this is a place I highly recommend. While I lived in Okinawa, many year end parties were hosted here and I had incredible experiences every time.
• ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach (Onna Village) – This place is literally like it’s own little city and is so convenient, you don’t even have to leave the property. Guests can utilize a mini-golf course, shops, rental bicycles, canoes, and jet skis. There’s even on-site gym, hot tub, and sauna.
• Mr. Kinjo (Naha) – Conveninetly located outside Asahibashi Station, the location is great and breakfast is included in your stay.
• Ocean View Araha (Chatan) – Set in Chatan, 2.5 km from Sunset Beach and 2.8 km from Mihama American Village, Ocean View Araha offers garden views and free WiFi.
• Hotel Sunset Zanpa (Yomitan) – Set in Yomitan, Hotel Sunset ZANPA provides accommodation with private balconies. The property is situated 5 km from Zakimi Gusuku Castle, 2.5 km from Murasakimura and 2.1 km from Cape Zanpa. The property is non-smoking and is located 1.6 km from Zanpa Beach.
• Guest House Umikaji (Naha) – This two star guest house is attractively located in the Naha City Centre district of Naha, and set 2 km from Yachimun Street.
• La’ Gent Hotel (Chatan) – Set 1.2 km from Sunset Beach, La’gent Hotel Okinawa Chatan / Hotel and Hostel offers rooms with air conditioning in Chatan. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage space, along with free WiFi. The property is non-smoking and is situated less than 1 km from Mihama American Village.
• Holiday House Ryuky-an (Yomitan) – Located just a 12-minute drive from Cape Maeda, famous for its beautiful scenery, clear waters and snorkelling, Holiday House Ryukyu-an offers a self-catering holiday home with free WiFi access.

What To Eat in Okinawa

One of the reasons Okinawans live so long is because of their diet. It’s rich in fish, rice and veggies (especially goya). In my opinion, the Okinawa diet is one of the most healthy in the world.

If you’re looking for something that is off the beaten path and a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the unique cuisine of Okinawa, then I highly suggest taking a traditional cooking class . With this class, you will get a choice of making goya chanpuru or Okinawa soba (two very staple dishes). Before you cook, you’ll also get a tour of the Naha Food Market and see what’s really up.

P.S. Slowly but surely there is also a vegan and vegetarian scene that has been popping up!

• Okinawa Soba – This dish is buckwheat noodles with pork belly, scallion, fish cake, and boneless pork ribs.
• Beni Imo Taruto – Purple potato tart is one of my all time favorite sweets in Okinawa. They originated in Yomitan.
• Goya Champuru – This dish is made with goya (bitter melon), tofu, egg, and pork belly. It’s a popular dish and a classic one you need to try.
• Okinawan Sea Grapes – My first thought was.. Ew gross, but they’re actually quite nice. The taste is slightly salty with an ocean freshness to it and it is especially nice on a hot day.
• Yaki Niku – This is Japanese style barbecue and something that should definitely be on your must eat list. You get raw cuts of different meats and cook it yourself on the table. I took all my siblings to Japanese barbecue and its something we still enjoy doing together.

Southern Okinawa

While visiting Okinawa, you’ll definitely be starting in Naha. There’s tons of Okinawa tourist attractions (despite what most ill researched and cranky travelers might have said). Everything I recommend are things I personally have done and loved. The ocean in Okinawa is probably the most beautiful ocean you’ll ever see in your life. I recommend going on a Okinawa Glass Bottom Boat Tour from Tomari Port.

Shuri Castle

The Shuri Castle was once known as the Rykyu Kingdom and home to the royalty. Sadly, in 2019 a devastating fire burned down Shuri Castle . To my knowledge, the castle is still be reconstructed. The grounds are just as beautiful though and I still recommend going. You can even rent a kimono or yukata to make the experience 10x better and the photos even more awesome.

Kokusai Dori

Kokusai Dori is the main touristy strip in Naha. This is where you start your vacation in Okinawa Japan. Here you’ll find hundreds of trinkets and baubles from stores selling Okinawa themed merchandise. Anything and everything Okinawa culture related is on this street. For cool things to do in Okinawa, I suggest you go karting like Super Mario on the main strip.

Okinawa Whale Watching

If you want to watch the humpback whales, the best time of year in Okinawa is from December through April. While whale watching in Okinawa, you can watch them teach their young how to survive in the open waters. It is a majestic experience. You can book your whale watching tour here .

Shuri Ryusen Coral Dyeing

Shuri Ryusen Coral Dyeing has undoubtedly been one of my favorite experiences ever in Okinawa. Instead of throwing away dead coral, Okinawans found a way to repurpose it and make art out of tragedy. Here you take special dyes in a pouch and press it over coral to make imprints. I think this is a great souvenir for your vacation in Okinawa.

Paint Your Own Shisa

One of the best things to do in Okinawa, Japan is to partake in the local culture. Did you know the shisa dog was given to the Ryukyu King to protect him during hard times? Shisa come in male and female pairs. They are used to keep good vibes in your home and keep out all negative vibes. You’ll find them all over Okinawa island and you can paint your own shisa as a great momento .

Shikinaen Garden

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Shikinaen Garden is one of the most stunning gardens in Okinawa. With Chinese and unique Ryukyuan influences, I highly recommend this garden. Shikinaen was once a residence and private escape of the royalty where they went to relax and unwind. It’s one of the best things to see in Okinawa if you love nature and gardens.

This is a memorial dedicated to the people who died in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Our history books tell us one third of Okinawa’s population was lost during this bitter and gruesome battle. If you’re sightseeing Okinawa, this is a must visit activity. Here you’ll learn about the history and sign a petition to end all wars. P.S. Bring some tissues because you’ll see some seriously sad sights in Okinawa.

Ryukyu Glass Making

Many people don’t know a very unique style of Ryukyu glass making was born in Okinawa. The glass has many bubbles because it is said to emulate the beautiful ocean. I myself have done this experience and made jewelry. To be honest, it is one of my most cherished possessions. Ryukyu glass making is one of the most unique things to do at Okinawa.

Try an ATV Experience

Do you have a need for adventure? Yeah me too. I like going really fast on scooters, ATVs, and golf carts. With this ATV experience in Itoman, you’ll feel like the bad ass you really are. They have a marked trail and its even safe enough to bring kids if you have them.

Central Okinawa

The midlands are my favorite place to play in Okinawa. I lived there and I still know it like the back of my hand today. I honestly think it’s one of the best parts of the island to be on because you have access to the north and south.

American Village is my old stomping grounds and one of my favorite places to visit in Okinawa. Since it is located across the street from the Kadena Air Base, you’ll find many delicious restaurants to choose from. It’s a popular tourist spot in Okinawa Japan. There’s also a huge SEGA arcade to keep you entertained, close proximity to the Aeon Department store, Sunset Beach, and Araha Beach.

As you know, Okinawa is famous for beni imo which is purple potato. Make sure you stop at the Blue Seal flagship store so you can get the ice cream which is to DIE FOR. You can also get your troll on at the Blue Seal ice cream balcony while you overlook the Ferris Wheel. Urban legend in the area has it that if you ride it with someone you’re dating you’ll break up… And to be honest, it happened to me with a guy I was dating, so I’m inclined to believe it.

This is one of my absolute favorite shopping destinations in Asia. Why? Since the American military bases are all in close proximity to this mall there are many foreign shops I enjoy like Forever 21, H&M, and American Eagle. The Rycom Mall is one of the best Okinawa Japan attractions because there’s so many shopping choices. I you’re a bigger gal or compadre, I recommend hanging out at the Rycom Mall .

If you truly want to experience Okinawa like a local then you have to visit Yomitan Village. It gets overlooked, but its home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, gorgeous beaches, and home of the purple potato tart. For me, my old village is the creme de la creme of Okinawa sightseeing.

Eat at Ocean’s Pizza

This is one of the better places on the island to eat pizza. The quality is amazing (because Japan) and their lunch buffet is to die for. You can order the lunch special pizza buffet with an amazing view. Now that’s what I call eating an Italian pie in style.

Eat at Dechibica

This is one of the most famous vegan eats on the island. The owners Kiwa and Taku San are seriously wonderfully people. I shamelessly ate at this restaurant once or twice a week and they are truly food artists. They grow their own ingredients or they are sourced locally for optimal freshness.

Go To Zakimi Castle

UNESCO designates World Heritage Sites for a reason. It’s because they’re fucking cool. Zakimi Castle was built in the 1400s by the Chuzan Kingdom which ruled over central Okinawa Honto. The castle served as a safeguard against rebels in the north, after the Chuzan Kingdom defeated the Hokuzan Kingdom in the north and eventually united the island into the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Yomitan Pottery Village

Designated as a national treasure of Japan, the Yomitan Pottery Village showcases the unique artistry of Okinawa. There are over 45 practicing artists, some of which are national treasures themselves. Prices of the pottery start at $10 and up. The Yomitan Pottery village was one of the most interesting things to see in Okinawa Japan because of all the culture and art.

Zanpa Beach

This beach is especially stunning when the sun shines. It is free to all residents and tourists who want to enjoy a clean and well-maintained beach in Yomitan. I frequented this beach after work and let me tell you, it’s not crowded at all. Every trip to Okinawa needs to include a beautiful beach or five.

Swim With Whale Sharks

I totally wish I would have known about swimming with whale sharks before I left Yomitan. If you’re a licensed diver, you can swim with these gentle and beautiful giants in the open ocean. What kind of Okinawa guide would this be if there wasn’t a little adventure?

Stay At Hotel Nikko Alivila

Hotel Nikko Alivila is one of the most stunning hotels on the island and while I was working as a high school teacher in Okinawa, there were many a school end of the year parties hosted there. If you’re looking to splurge it’s got luxury, spacious guest rooms and beautiful views of Nirai Beach.

You can get lovely massages and walk around European inspired gardens.

Onna Village

Did you know Onna means woman in Japanese? Situated right above Yomitan, this is more of a resort village. There’s tons of beaches and incredible places to stay to really enjoy your time in Okinawa.

Ryukyu Mura

The Ryukyu Mura is an Okinawa must visit. This is a theme park with a recreated traditional Okinawan village. A wide range of traditional dances and cultural experiences are held inside Ryukyu Mura . You can eat popular Okinawan dishes and purchase a wide range of souvenirs.

Onna Village Blue Cave

How much of a risk taker are you? I used to be terrified of swimming in the open ocean because I didn’t know what crazy critters lived there. The Blue Cave at Maeda Point was once a hidden gem when I lived there, but now it’s more accessible to the public. Snorkeling (or scuba diving) at the Onna Village Blue Cave is seriously one of the most spectacular things I’ve ever done in my life.

The way it glows and shines like a precious gem is incredible. You’ll be able to see all the stunning coral and exotic fish swimming as well.

Ikei Island

There are many gorgeous islands in Okinawa. Ikei is one of my favorite and has an incredible beach. You have to pay 700 yen to enter but it is so worth it. They have showers, pristine waters, and floats you can hang out on. It’s one of the best places to visit in Okinawa for exclusive beaches.

Northern Okinawa

Northern Okinawa is much more rural so if you’re really into nature, then the north is definitely a place you want to hang out.

Visit Okinawa World

If you’re looking for a way to really immerse yourself in Okinawa’s unique culture, then you should visit Okinawa World . This interactive museum gives you access to the Nanto Brewery, a culture museum, and cave. It’s definitely worth a visit!

Visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The famous Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the top attractions in Okinawa Japan. I can guarantee you’ve seen it on social media before and have been amazed. They save the best for last and the whale shark exhibit is awe inspiring. It’s also the first aquarium to successfully breed a baby whale shark in captivity.

Nago Pineapple Park

At Nago Pineapple Park you’ll have enough fun for the entire family. This is am amusement park that showcases everything pineapple. At the park, you’ll also be able to drink special alcoholic wine made solely from pineapple.

Pizza in the Sky

When I tell you this pizza joint is famous, I mean it. Because of the high quality ingredients used and their brick oven way of cooking, expect to wait over an hour to be seated on the weekends. Also, if you couldn’t tell from the name, the restaurant is on top of a mountain making the views and pizza totally worth it.

Captain Kangaroo

This is another famous burger place on the island. In fact, it is so well-known that it’s sold out before 1pm. Their burgers are huge and it’s insanely popular with foreigners and Japanese alike.

Tanagagumui (Aha) Falls

If the name doesn’t sound Japanese, it’s because it’s not. As one of Okinawa’s hidden treasures (buried way the hell up north), you would be missing out by not jumping off the waterfall, swinging off the rope swing, or hiking nearby. It’s still one of the best kept secrets and a lot of people don’t know it exists.

Also, there are no lifeguards or any rescue personell there. If you go cliff jumping or swimming, then you do so at your own risk. That being said, there is a rope swing and it’s incredibly refreshing to jump in after the hike up there.

Kouri Island

Kouri Island is so small you can probably drive around the entire thing in thirty minutes. It’s got great scenery and beautiful beaches. In addition, it also also famous for the heart rocks. Many couples go to take photos there. The stars are especially stunning at night. Kouri Island is near Nago. You can also book a cruising tour of Haneji Island which also has amazing snorkeling.

Okinawa Outer Islands

Do you enjoy beach bum life? Are you into Storybook blue oceans, sparkling fish, and a sun tan? Okinawa has loads of outer islands like Tokashiki, Zamami, Ishigaki, Miyako, Aka and Geruma. Only an hour away by ferry from Tomari Pot in Naha, you can visit your tropical paradise any time.

Tokashiki is and forever will be my most favorite outer island on Okinawa. I have so many good memories on this island that have added to the experience. Not only is it beautiful, but you can also see sea turtles too. Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands are a great day trip and are located 40km from Naha. They are well-known for their pristine white sand beaches, wonderful snorkeling and diving, as well as crystal blue waters ideal for swimming. Going to these amazing islands is such a treat and I recommend a full day island snorkeling at the Kerama islands .

Or if you’re a licensed diver, I heard the Keramas is one of the best diving spots on Okinawa. You can get a diving tour of the Keramas at a discount here .

Zamami is one of the bigger islands of the Keramas and off the coast of Naha. Tokashiki is its neighbor. You can rent a scooter and easily get around on the island. This island is more hilly so I really don’t recommend renting a bike. Bring your snorkel gear because there are so many beaches with no people and lots of curious sea creatures. Zamami is a great day trip but if you want to spend a longer time exploring you can book a stay at Oceana Portvillage or at Zamamia Guest House .

Aka and Geruma

Aka and Geruma are islands attached to Zamami via bridges. They have cute island folklore about two dog lovers. One of the dogs used to swim back and forth from the islands each day to be with his mate. I also love these islands because they are so untouched by tourism. You can easily rent a bike and have these islands all to yourself.

Ishigaki is the second largest island in the chain of islands that comprises of Okinawa. You actually need to take a flight down to Ishigaki and cannot travel there by ferry. Luckily, it’s only an hour by plane to get there. As the second biggest island, there is a lot to do there like explore the smaller islands and immerse yourself in the traditional Ryukyuan Island culture. Since this is the next biggest island, you must rent a car to get around Ishigaki . Here are some of my recommended activities:

Taketomi Island

The first time I went to Taketomi Island, I got as sick as a dog with a high fever and then a typhoon rolled in ruining the trip. The second time I went… It was a magical and fantastic trip. I can’t recommend going here enough. Taketomi island is what inspired one of the most famous Okinawan songs you’ll hear time and time again. I really recommend taking this eco-friendly Taketomi and Phantom Island tour here .

Buy Black Pearls at Kabira Bay

Did you know Ishigaki Island is one of the biggest producers of black pearls in the world? They were thought of as so rare and beautiful the Ryukyu Royalty wore them in their crowns and jewelry. Black pearls are expensive, but they are a wonderful Okinawa souvenir. I own a black pearl necklace and it is one of my most cherished possessions. It has sentimental value since I lived in Okinawa and I always said I left part of my heart in the ocean… So I took a part of the ocean with me. I bought my Okinawan black pearl at Ryukyu Pearl and I highly recommend them .

These black pearl farms are located at Kabira Bay so you can see the pearl farmers at work. It’s also a great place to go for an ocean tour. There’s a really cool Kabira Bay and Phantom Island Tour you can take and then come back and go shopping after.

Miyako is much more rural compared to Ishigaki. It has many amazing beaches, but there’s not much to sightsee for on the island. If you just wanna laze around and go to the beach, then Miyako is definitely more your vibe.

Okinawa Starts Here

Unsurprisingly, many of the things to do in Okinawa center around the water, whether you’re swimming where it meets the islands’ sugary shores, or scuba diving under it. However, there’s plenty to enjoy in Okinawa that has nothing to do with the beach, or even the outdoors.

Trust me—I know. My first trip to Okinawa took place in the winter, and in spite of what well-meaning friends had told me, saw the archipelago plunged into conditions that were absolutely frigid, with only about three hours of sunshine over the course a 72-hour trip. As a result, I had little choice but to seek out Okinawa attractions that were weather independent.

On the other hand, this Okinawa travel guide won’t simply name places to visit if you happen to come when it’s pouring rain and barely above freezing. I’ll also discuss activities that you can enjoy on the hottest and sunniest of summer days, so don’t you worry!

The Best Time to Visit Okinawa

When is the best time to travel to Okinawa? Officially, Okinawa is a 365-day per year destination, but my personal experience contradicts this . While my initial research suggested that early February was near the top of the list of when to visit Okinawa, the conditions I encountered were appalling—I’m talking thick clouds, heavy rain, howling wind and temperatures between 3º-5ºC. I can’t in good conscience recommend that anyone visit Okinawa between about November and March as a result, in spite of the fact that things to do in Okinawa in March are theoretically similar to what you could do in May or September.

On the other hand, since so much of what to do in Okinawa is outdoor, and the archipelago also experiences a long monsoon and typhoon season between about June and October, this is also not an ideal time to visit Okinawa, at least not on paper. In practice, I’ve found that rain comes and goes quickly in Okinawa during the Japanese summer ; apart from this, April and May are generally OK months to visit Okinawa. My latest visit to Okinawa took place in September and apart from some haze on Tokashiki island , the weather was perfect.

My Favorite Things to Do in Okinawa

Hit the beach (or at least look at it).

The bad news? Coming up with even a short list of the best beaches in Okinawa can be difficult, especially if you have the time and inclination to go island-hopping. The good news? If you’re planning a shorter trip in Okinawa, add Ishigaki ‘s Kabira Bay and Aharen Beach on Tokashiki island (which sits just to the north of the main island) to your list. Note that in the case of Kabira Bay, which is protected, you won’t be able to get in the water (but you can still get some awesome pictures!).

Go Under the Sea (or Boat on Top of It)

Okinawa diving is some of the best in Asia (and almost by default, the best in Japan), though this can be a more expensive activity than you’ve found it to be elsewhere. Top diving spots in Okinawa include the Kerama Islands , which sit just off Okinawa main island, as well as the Yaeyama region, which includes Ishigaki. Note that Japan is very strict about diving licenses; if you don’t have yours when you arrive to Okinawa, your only option will be to snorkel. Another way to enjoy Okinawa’s beautiful water is to rent a canoe or kayak.

Take a Hike

Although it’s home to the best beaches in Japan, many things to do in Okinawa have nothing to do with water. In particular, Okinawa is a hiking paradise. Sticking close to the main island, some of my favorite hikes include the relatively short one up to the ruins of Nakijin Castle , or up to the keep of Shuri Castle in Naha city (which, due to a 2019 fire, is still mostly destroyed, I warn you). Outside the main island, Mount Gusuku on Ie  offers stunning views, while Mt. Omoto on Ishigaki couples amazing panoramas with crystalline waterfalls.

Eat Your Way Through Okinawa

Although neither as ubiquitous as sushi nor as trendy as ramen , the best Okinawa food will nonetheless have your mouth watering. Try Okinawa Soba , which sees classic soba noodle soup paired with tender pork belly with just the right amount of fat. Or head down to the Kokusai-dori international street in Naha city, and sample Taco Rice, a quirky dish that’s said to be the brain child of the American troops controversially stationed in the archipelago.

Stick to the City

None of which is to say you have to strap on hiking boots or don a swimsuit to enjoy Okinawa sightseeing. In fact, there’s plenty to enjoy in Naha itself, from the aforementioned Shuri Castle, to peaceful Shikina-en park, to the mysterious Naminoue Shrine , which rises above the city. Naha city is also home to Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum , where you can learn the story of the once-sovereign Kingdom of Ryukyu, which ruled over Okinawa before it was absorbed into the Japanese Empire.

Where to Stay in Okinawa

Okinawa is primarily a leisure destination for Japanese travelers, which leads some to believe that all the best Okinawa hotels are fancy beach resorts (if not ones stuck totally in the 80s, as is often the M.O. for hotels in Japan). Not so, at least not completely. While travelers seeking such properties can choose an accommodation like Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island , Okinawa is home to plenty of smart and even boutique-style city hotels, from West Inn in Naha to Ishigaki’s Hotel WBF Porto .

On the other hand, I wouldn’t worry yourself too much over where you stay in Okinawa. Notwithstanding the fact that so many of the things to do in Okinawa will keep you far outside your hotel room, even the location is somewhat superfluous, since you are likely to rent a car when you travel to Okinawa. To echo a sentiment I’ve brought up throughout this article, I believe your primary concern when visiting Okinawa should be the weather.

Is Okinawa Overrated?

Is Okinawa worth visiting? After my disastrous winter trip to the former Ryukyu Kingdom, I certainly didn’t think so. I was angry and I felt cursed, especially since so much of the rest of my 2018 Asia travel saw unseasonably wet and cold conditions. Thanks climate change! Further travel to Okinawa (it looks so beautiful under sunny skies—almost like Hawaii, which is ironic since so many Japanese shirk these islands in their own backyard for it) has proven me wrong, somewhat.

Which is to say that I wouldn’t recommend cutting short a trip in the rest of Japan—what to see in Okinawa, apart from the beaches, doesn’t compare to even the smallest city on Honshu, Shikoku , Kyushu or Hokkaido—or going out of your way at all, really, to visit Okinawa. The islands are honestly best visited on a weekend trip if you’re staying in Japan (or a nearby Asian country, like Taiwan ) for a while.

Other FAQ About Things to Do in Okinawa

Does okinawa get cold.

I know from personal experience that Okinawa gets cold! When I took my first trip to the archipelago, in January 2018, it was absolutely frigid, to say nothing of how rainy and windy it was, with almost constant cloud-cover. When is the best time to visit Okinawa? In my opinion, it’s not between December and March.

Do you tip in Okinawa?

As is the case throughout Japan, tipping is not customary in Okinawa. If you do try to tip, Okinawan people will assume you accidentally left the money behind, and chase after you with it. Save yourself the awkward exchange and don’t bother trying to tip in the first place!

What is the best area to stay in Okinawa?

The most convenient place to stay in Okinawa is in Naha city, preferably near the Yui monorail. Likewise, in Ishigaki, staying near Ishigaki Port allows you to easily access boats to outlying islands in the Yaeyama Archipelago.

The Bottom Line

The good news? Many experiences in my Okinawa travel guide have nothing to do with the beach, especially in Naha, the capital of the prefecture and largest city on its largest island. The bad news, conversely, is that needing to stay indoors is relatively likely in Okinawa, whether you make the mistake of visiting in winter like I did, or are unlucky enough to have a summer trip to the archipelago coincide with a typhoon making landfall. Okinawa travel guide: Visiting the Japanese southwest islands

Okinawa Prefecture consists of more than 150 distinct islands, all of which lie 400 miles from mainland Japan . This sets Okinawa apart as a world unto itself.

In Okinawa, you can explore deserted beaches , swim with sea turtles, or snorkel in crystal clear waters. One hundred and eleven of Okinawa’s islands are uninhabited, pristine and untouched , making them prime real estate for adventure. Okinawa is home to rare creatures, such as the Iriomote wild cat, and cuisine unique and different from the rest of Japan .

Whether you’ll be reclining in an all-inclusive resort, or whether backpacking through campgrounds and hostels is more your style, Okinawa offers something for every traveler on every sort of budget . Dive in to this travel guide and discover the many ways in which the islands are calling you.

Brief history of Okinawa

Okinawa is a region rich in history. For centuries, the islands’ diverse people – who may have originated in China, other parts of Asia, or Australia – were united under the Ryukyu Kingdom . By the 15th century, this kingdom had become an economic power. The islands were later invaded by a clan from the Japanese mainland, and officially became part of Japan during the 1800s .

During World War II , Okinawa was invaded by allied forces. The civilian population was decimated, as was the island’s infrastructure and cultural relics. This battle became known as tetsu no ame , or “typhoon of steel.” Echoes of this hardship are present throughout the prefecture. Yet, like a polished precious stone, Okinawa shines brightly despite these historically recent hardships.

How to get to Okinawa

Most travelers to Okinawa do so by air . Okinawa’s primary airport of Naha is located on Okinawa Main Island, or Okinawa Honto.

A flight from Tokyo to Okinawa takes approximately between 3 and  2 and a half hours , departing from   Narita Airport . You can fly from Tokyo to Okinawa from about $220 USD.

Traveling from Osaka to Okinawa , via Kansai International Airport , takes about 2 hours . The flight to Naha from Osaka may cost you about $110 USD.

Alternatively, ferries depart for Okinawa from Kagoshima three to four times weekly. The boat trip takes about 26 hours , with prices ranging from ¥15,000 (about $130.00 USD) for fare with no sleeping accommodations, to ¥37,000 (about $330.00 USD) for first class service with bedding.

Peak seasons for travel to Okinawa are during holidays such as Golden Week (late April to early May) and during the month of August. Tickets during these peak seasons sell out quickly and are more expensive than at other times. Special airfare passes are available to foreigners taking domestic flights in Japan such as Japan Explorer Pass . These may reduce round-trip airfare to Okinawa to $115.00 US, or even less.

Getting around Okinawa

Okinawa is an archipelago formed by several islands:

• Okinawa Island (aka Okinawa Hontō) the main island
• Iheya-Izena Islands : Iheya and Izena islands
• Sesoko Island.
• Yokatsu Islands : Yabuchi, Henza, Miyagi, Ikei, Hamahiga, Tsuken, Ukibara, Minamiukibara and Kudaka islands.
• Kume Island.
• Kerama Islands : Tokashiki, Zamami, Aka and Geruma islands.
• Aguni Islands : Aguni and Tonaki islands.

Unlike the main islands of the Japanese archipelago, in Okinawa there are not as many transportation options or as convenient as the Shinkansen or other trains, so getting around in Okinawa will be somewhat more complicated. We recommend, to explore Okinawa several days, rent a car (remember that in Japan you drive on the left side of the road).

In any case, if you arrive to Okinawa from Naha Airport, you can get to Naha City using the Yui Rail , a monorail that will take you directly from the airport to the city.

You will also find other means of transportation such as taxis and buses , and there is also the possibility of renting motorcycles and bicycles .

Things to do in Okinawa

Packed with beaches and tropical forests , what is there not to do in Okinawa? Hiking, snorkeling, and scuba diving make the short list, but Okinawa has even more to offer.

If Okinawa’s diverse wildlife isn’t enough for you, you can visit the Churaumi Aquarium , considered the best aquarium in Japan and one of the best in the world . A highlight is the Kuroshio Tank, one of the largest fish tanks in the world , which houses the massive whale shark – the largest extant fish in the world. You’ll also enjoy hands-on starfish exhibits; dolphin, sea turtle, and manatee shows; large-scale coral reef exhibits; displays of deep-sea bioluminescent fish; and more.

A favorite historical site is the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum and Park , where you can honor the memory of those lost in the Battle of Okinawa. The sobering museum chronicles what led up to the battle, the battle itself, and the subsequent reconstruction.

The Shuri Castle , located in Naha, was built during the 14th century. It was used as a residence by the royal family of Ryukyu Kingdome becoming the political, economic and cultral heart of the Ryukyu Islands for 450 years. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history, most recently during World War II. In 1992 it was reconstructed for the last time in its original site.

Best time to visit Okinawa

Okinawa (���ꌧ, Okinawa-ken) is Japan's southernmost prefecture , consisting of a few dozen, small islands in the southern half of the Nansei Shoto, the island chain which stretches over about one thousand kilometers from Kyushu to Taiwan.

Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto) around Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto) around Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto) around Ishigaki Island .

Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter. The seas surrounding Okinawa's islands offer beautiful coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife. Consequently, snorkeling and scuba diving are among Okinawa's top attractions.

The islands making up Okinawa Prefecture, are also known as the Ryukyu Islands, named after the native culture, which is distinctly different from that of the rest of Japan in terms of language, cuisine, arts, etc.

An independent kingdom and tributary state to China for several centuries, the Ryukyu Islands came under control of the Satsuma feudal fief (today's Kagoshima Prefecture ) in the 17th century, and were made a Japanese prefecture in 1879, accompanied by efforts to assimilate the native population. But despite these past efforts, the Ryukyuan culture survived and is now Okinawa's other main attraction.

Towards the end of World War Two , Okinawa became the stage of one of the war's bloodiest battles, when American troops invaded the islands. Okinawa remained under US administration until 1972, while several thousands of US military members remain stationed on the spacious and controversial US military bases on Okinawa Main Island today.

Okinawa: How to Do the Sub-tropical Islands on a Budget

“Traveling to Okinawa is expensive,” a Japanese friend once told me. “If I wanted to go to the beach, I could go to a Southeast Asian country for much cheaper.” Mention Okinawa and there are bound to be some people who think that it’s just too far or too expensive to be worth visiting. It’s simply not true, though, that going to Okinawa is expensive. I was able to visit Okinawa on a budget, and here’s how.

1. Fly with an LCC (ideally during off-peak seasons)

It’s all thanks to low-cost carriers that going to Okinawa isn’t necessarily costly anymore. For example, Vanilla Air flies from Tokyo to Naha, and the average fare is about ¥ 7,000 . I’ve seen prices drop to as low as ¥ 2,400 due to promo fares and it being off-season, though. If you want to go cheapo all the way, go in January or February, or from October to December.

Meanwhile, Peach Air flies to Naha from Fukuoka and Osaka , with prices starting at about ¥ 4,500 . Peach also flies from Osaka to Ishigaki Island , which is known for its beautiful beaches, for a bit more.

Note that Okinawa is a holiday destination, so some times of the year are a lot busier—and thus more expensive—than others.

2. Stick to the main island (or just one island)

There’s a catch to going to Okinawa on the cheap: you might have to forget about going to Okinawa for its beautiful beaches or remote islands (where you can see unspoiled nature).

Island-hopping can also get pretty expensive: sometimes, your only option to get from one island to another may be an expensive plane flight because it’s the only way, or a previously existing ferry service was discontinued. For instance, I wanted to go to Ishigaki Island from Naha (the capital of Okinawa), but there were no longer any ferries going back and forth between Ishigaki and Okinawa Island.

I had to go from Naha to Ishigaki by plane, and the round-trip cost was almost the same as my round-trip Tokyo-Naha flight. Had I not availed myself of promo fares, the Naha-Ishigaki round trip would’ve cost more than the Tokyo-Naha round trip.

That may be a bummer, because those are attractions that Okinawa is known for, but even if you just mostly stay within the eponymous main island, you can still appreciate Okinawa. Even if you don’t get to see Okinawa’s beaches or nature much, there’s still a lot to appreciate about Okinawa’s unique culture and traditions.

Things to do in and around Naha, Okinawa

Naha alone already has its own appeal. Its long, bustling shopping street, Kokusai-Dori has a lot of distinctly Okinawan souvenirs and delicacies, such as shisa (a pair of guardian deities that look like lion-dog hybrids) statues and beni-imo (purple yam) snacks.

There are also plenty of shops where you can try some Okinawan handicrafts and take home some souvenirs you made yourself!

Take a few turns here and there, and you can find yourself in Makishi Market, where you can see various pork products being sold, as well as fruits and vegetables that you can’t easily find in the rest of Japan: goya, or bitter gourd; shiquasa , or Okinawan lime; and so on.

Upstairs are some restaurants serving fresh Okinawan food—don’t be put off by how old-school they may look; the food’s delicious! You can even ask some of them to cook raw ingredients bought downstairs.

The majestic Shuri Castle is also definitely worth visiting to see Ryukyuan architecture (Ryukyu being the name of the kingdom that ruled over Okinawa and part of present-day Kagoshima ).

If you want to learn about Okinawan culture, go to Okinawa World or Ryukyu Village, which, while touristy, are opportunities for you to see eisa , a lively Okinawan dance; to try some traditional handicraft; and to wear a  bingata kimono, which is made of cloth dyed and stenciled Okinawan-style.

Okinawa World even has a massive underground cave, Gyokusendo, that you can walk through to see some stalactites and stalagmites.

Beyond Naha but also on the main island is Churaumi Aquarium , a must-see when you’re in Okinawa. This aquarium, one of the largest in the world, has three whale sharks, which is a feat considering how big these gentle giants are. Entrance is ¥ 1,880 per person, but some hotels and Klook have slightly discounted tickets, and the price drops to ¥ 1,310 after 4 pm.

Prefer your fish free-range? Consider booking a marine-life cruise in a glass-bottomed boat.

3. Join a one-day bus tour of Okinawa

Okinawa only has one railway system: the Okinawa Monorail, also known as the Yui Rail, and it only covers parts of Naha. Public buses are few and far between. This leads to another reason for tourists to see Okinawa as expensive and not worth visiting: to go to other places, even if they’re also on the main island, you have to rent a car or take a taxi to get around. But a one-day bus tour can save you the trouble.

The tours are not expensive, costing anywhere between ¥ 3,000 and ¥ 26,400 . There are a variety of options to chose from including group or private tours, the destinations you can visit and the types of activity included. Check out Viator for the full range of available tour packages.

4. Stay at a guesthouse or hostel

This may seem like common-sense advice, but you’ll be surprised at how cheap Okinawa’s guesthouse and hostel rooms can get. Some of them can go as low as ¥ 1,500 a night, because property isn’t as expensive in Okinawa.

There’s a chance, though, that you just might get what you paid for, so be careful (unless you really don’t mind sacrificing comfort and cleanliness), and do check the reviews.

Even the hotels can be pretty cheap. Feeling hesitant to pay what seemed like a too-good-to-be-true price for accommodation, I opted for a budget hotel. I stayed in Hotel Stork in Omoromachi , near several shopping malls, which cleverly uses loft-style rooms to save space. The hotel had free drinks downstairs, polite and friendly staff, and rooms for a little less than ¥ 3,000 a night.

Okinawa Itinerary: Best Way To Spend 3-5 Days in Okinawa

When travelers consider visiting Japan, mainland hotspots like Kyoto, Tokyo, or Nara come way before an Okinawa itinerary.

It’s often so far down the list that it doesn’t make the roster for consideration, but this little island rimmed with turquoise blue water blends the charming culture of Japan with the natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, and that cultural biosphere alone should render an excuse to visit.

There’s something about being able to order vending machine ramen after leisuring on a powdery white sand beach that is so… Correct. “ If that’s wrong, I don’t ever want to be right ” type of thing. 

My sister lived in Okinawa for over 6 years. I’ve visited her twice now, the first time was my very first trip out of the country. I’m a sucker for something sentimental, but despite that, Okinawa is in the top ten places I’ve traveled to over the years.

And because I feel that way, I’ve spent hours compiling all the information and destinations I’ve explored across multiple visits to create this perfect Okinawa itinerary. This article is filled with the best things to do in Okinawa and insider tips to help you plan your ideal trip to Japan’s southernmost prefecture.

Things To Know Before Visiting Okinawa

Check the current exchange rate. Rates are always changing. Right now the US dollar has a fantastic exchange rate for yen, which is reflected in this post. So be sure to compare before your trip so you don’t have any surprises.

You don’t have to have a car, but it’s highly recommended. There are Okinawa itineraries you can follow without a car, but having a car in Okinawa will make your trip 1000x better for the freedom it gives. Public transport is great on the island, but it will only get you so far.

Have change. The further north you travel, the less likely they are to accept cards. While you’re in Naha, make sure to grab paper yen from an ATM and convert it to smaller bills for ease of travel.

Know key Japanese phrases. No worries if you don’t know a lick of Japanese, but at least have some basics in your back pocket.

“Konnichiwa” (ko-ni-chi-wa) = hello

“Arigatou gozaimasu” (ah-ri-ga-to go-zai-mas) = thank you

“Sumimasen” (soo-me-ma-sen) = i’m sorry/excuse me

“Hai” (hi) = yes

“Iie” (ee-ye) = no

Pack plenty of sunscreen. The UV index is no joke here.

Beware the habu . This is a venomous pit viper endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It makes hiking and late-night ground travel particularly dangerous. They’re typically 5 feet long and marked with bold, dark green blotches. If you’re bitten, seek medical attention immediately. 

Okinawa Itinerary

This Okinawa itinerary focuses on these main areas of the island: Naha, Nago, Yanbaru National Park, and Kerama Islands National Park.

The days are divided by region so that there is minimal backtracking. For these 3-5 days in Okinawa, you’ll visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, immerse yourself in Okinawa’s own unique culture, hike to the island’s most stunning viewpoints, swim in some of the world’s clearest waters, and so much more.

I have advice and tips to cater to the amount of time you have to spend in Okinawa. It’s straightforward. If you’re in Okinawa for 3 days, follow days 1-3 of this itinerary. If you’re in Okinawa for 4 days follow the itinerary to the fourth day. Same for the fifth.

Who this itinerary is for | I recommend this itinerary for adventurous travelers who enjoy the outdoors and want to maximize their time on the island. It’s mainly outdoor-based with a sprinkle of shopping and fun dining experiences along the way. It covers some main tourist attractions as well as gems that are more off the beaten path. At the end of this post, I have an additional list of things to do in Okinawa if you want to tweak some things.

Okinawa Itinerary: Day 1

The first day of this Okinawa itinerary begins in the southern half of the island near Naha and Yomitan. You’ll start the day shopping along the world-famous Kokusai Street. Then, spend the rest of the day exploring Shuri Castle, Cape Zanpa, Zanpa Beach, and the Yomitan Pottery Village.

Kokusai-Dori

Kokusai Street (its name meaning: “International Road) is one of the most famous tourist spots in Okinawa. 

The 0.9-mile (1.6 km) diagonal street runs right through the heart of Naha and is filled with just about anything you can think of. It is catered to tourists, but enough interesting things are going on that you definitely won’t be bored as you browse. I saw a real frog coin purse once, and it still wasn’t the most interesting thing I saw that day. 

THINGS TO DO ALONG KOKUSAI STREET

/ / Taste the famous purple potato . Okinawa is known for Beni imo, a vibrant purple potato. You can try it a bunch of different ways, but it’s popular baked into tarts and pastries or made into ice cream. It’s dotted in plenty of spots along Kokusai-dori, but Okashigoten Kokusai Street Matsuo Branch is a great place to start your hunt.

/ / Visit the Makishi Public Market . This local market is nicknamed the “Kitchen of Okinawa” as it is a place full of the island’s culinary wonders. There are two floors, one with a predominantly seafood wet market and another with a ton of different restaurants serving local dishes. If you buy something from first floor, you can take it upstairs and have them prepare it for you for a small fee. 

– While you’re at the market, I highly recommend booking Taste of Okinawa’s cooking class and historic market tour . You’ll learn about local ingredients and hand-select everything for the recipes you’ll be making at the market. After touring the market, you’ll make 3-4 local dishes: an appetizer, soup, main, and dessert. Afterwards, you feast! 

/ / Try habushu . This is a traditional Okinawa rice liquor that boasts a fang-bearing pit viper at the bottom of the bottle. It’s said to strengthen the body and boost stamina.

/ / Peruse and meander . The shops and stalls are a melting pot, so going in with a plan is slightly ludicrous because you’re going to be pulled in many different directions. From fresh sashimi to questionable English translations printed on t-shirts. The market is your oyster.

Shuri Castle (optional)

Shuri Castle was the palace of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom and is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While stunning, it’s been through the wringer in the last century as it’s been destroyed and rebuilt many times. In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, almost all of it was destroyed and then rebuilt decades later. Then, in October of 2019, the main courtyard structures were destroyed in another fire.

Right now, there are ongoing renovations said to be finished in 2026. That’s why this is an optional activity since you’ll essentially be walking through a bunch of construction. However, the history is still there. Get updates here .

Yachimun no Sato (Yomitan Pottery Village)

Pottery in Okinawa has a history that dates back over six thousand years. Their traditional “yachimun” style of earthenware was influenced by trade with Japan and other countries across Asia.

It has evolved over the centuries, resulting in unique handmade ceramics. The Yomitan Pottery Village has ceramic shops, traditional  noborigama (literally “climbing kiln”), and pottery workshops.

You can browse around the studios and find a special travel souvenir. They have tea cups, kettles, plates, bowls, and a ton of other incredible crafts. You’ll need some self-restraint here because you’ll want to buy everything. Bring plenty of cash!

Cape Zanpa is the westernmost point of Okinawa and the last place the sun sets over the island. 

A massive lighthouse and dramatic sea cliffs overlook the vibrant East China Sea. For a small fee (¥200/$1.33), you can climb the lighthouse for an even better view of the area. It’s a picturesque location, sunset or not. 

It played a massive role during WWII when US troops landed on the shores south of the cape and officially initiated the Battle of Okinawa.

Nearby is Zanpa Beach , one of the best beaches in Okinawa. If you have the bandwidth, it’s an ideal spot to wind down for the rest of the day as there are lockers, bathrooms, water activities, and other rentals available.

Okinawa Itinerary: Day 2

The second day of this Okinawa itinerary is probably one of my favorite days of the whole trip. The morning takes you north to hike the highest point in Okinawa, Mt. Katsuudake. From there, you’ll enjoy a scenic lunch at Pizza in the Sky, visit the Churami Aquarium, Nakjin Castle Ruins, and finish the day on Kouri Island.

Hike Mt. Katsuudake

Katsuudake , also known as Mt. Katsuu, is the highest mountain in Okinawa and boasts panoramic views of the coast north of Nago. While those credentials make this hike sound daunting, know that the hike out and back is only a mile.

Some areas of the trail are pretty steep, so you will experience some thigh-burning, but it’s brief and the views are worth the sweat. You’ll want to wear proper shoes and have all the day hiking essentials with you.

At the trailhead, there are bathrooms and walking sticks. The walking sticks will help you out a ton on this trail, especially on the descent, so don’t forget one before you head out. The trail is well marked, but always bring an offline map with you. My ole reliable is the GAIA App .

Pizza in the sky

Pizza in the Sky is one of my must-eat spots while you’re in Okinawa.

This little restaurant is perched on a hill with even more memorable views over the island. They serve pizza, either small or medium size with a few different topping options, and salad.

While the food options on the menu are limited, a lot is going on in the drink section. You need to try the acerola juice made nearby in Motobu. Otherwise, they have other fruit juices, soda, tea, and beer.

Okinawa Churami Aquarium

The Okinawa Churami Aquarium is the second-largest aquarium in the world and is considered the best in Japan.

It’s plotted within the Ocean Expo Park, where there’s a ton of different things to see and do. I’m normally not one to include an aquarium on my itinerary, but even as an adult, this place was epic. One of the major highlights here is a massive tank that holds three whale sharks.

They do a ton of conservation and research efforts, plus a ton of educational exhibits to help protect the oceans. All of that I can get behind. Although, after seeing whale sharks in the Philippines , I’m not sure I’d go back again.

It’s always important to do your research when considering experiences like this. After you walk through the aquarium, check out the Omoro Botanical Gardens , Okinawa Village , and the observatory if they suit your fancy.

Nakjin Castle Ruins

Nakjin is an ancient castle from the Ryukyu Kingdom that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was built in the late 1200s. During the Sanzan Period (1322-1429), Okinawa Honto (the main island) was divided into three separate kingdoms: Hokuzan in the north; Chuzan in the middle; and Nanzan in the south. The Hokuzan King reigned over Nakjin Castle until it was overtaken by the Chuzan to unify the island and create the Ryukyu Kingdom. 

Near the castle is a cultural center where you can learn about the Nakjin village history and look at artifacts dug up on the castle grounds like Chinese pottery, coins, and documents from various eras.

Tip: If you’re here during Okinawa’s cherry blossom season, typically January or early February, this is an excellent spot to see the sakura.

Kouri Island

Okinawans refer to Kouri Island as ‘Love Island’ from their ancient folklore. 

It was said that at the birth of mankind, two lovers lived inside a sea cave on this island. The two famous heart-shaped rocks at Tinu Beach only add to the romance.

It’s small and circular, and only takes about 15 minutes to drive around, so it’s the perfect last stop before heading back to your accommodation. There are a handful of cafes you can grab a bite at, otherwise, there are great options back in Nago.

Things to do on Kouri Island

/ / Snap a photo of the Heart Rock : These iconic coral rock formations are the poster child of Kouri Island.

/ / Take in the views at the Kouri Ocean Tower : This observation deck has the best views of the island up at 269 feet (82 m). Grab a ticket in advance.

/ / Relax on Kouri Beach : A small beach next to the main bridge that is unspoiled and relaxing.

Okinawa Itinerary: Day 3

The third day of this Okinawa itinerary is dedicated to getting out in nature in Yanbaru National Park. The morning starts at the picturesque and historic Cape Hedo. Then, you’ll spend the afternoon hiking in the National Park before choosing your adventure for the evening.

This is the northernmost point of Okinawa, one of the most beautiful locations in Japan. It’s a cape that juts out into two oceans: the East China Sea in the west and the Pacific Ocean in the east. 

At the vista, there is a small monument that was erected to commemorate the end of the US occupation of Okinawa and its return to Japanese sovereignty. Another, a small white bird, honors the friendship between Kunigami Village and Yoronjima.

It’s stunning any time of day, but sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful. This day, aim to make it out for sunrise if you can as warm golden light illuminates the cape.

Yanbaru National Park

This nature area makes up the majority of Northern Okinawa with subtropical rainforests, mangroves, dramatic cliffs, and rare plants and animals. It’s a full-on nature playground if you love the outdoors. Waterfall hikes, canoeing, kayaking, secluded beach excursions, and wildlife watching are all at your fingertips here.

Best Hikes in Yanbaru National Park

/ /  Hiji Otaki Falls Trail (1.7 miles, moderate, out-and-back): This hike takes you to the biggest waterfall in Okinawa. It’s a well-maintained trail, but there are a lot of stairs to take you up to the falls. 

/ /  Tataki Falls Trail (1.3 miles, moderate, out-and-back): This is the perfect hike for a hot day in Okinawa. It follows a stream up to a small waterfall encased in lush green foliage. Don’t forget water shoes, your swimsuit, and a dry bag .

/ /  Ogimi Shioyawan Loop (4.7 miles, moderate, loop): Picturesque and panoramic, this trail takes you along limestone mountains with views over Shioya Bay. Ogimi , the village the hike is in, is the longest-lived village in Japan.

/ / Jawbone Ridge Loop (6.8 miles, difficult, loop): This loop also runs through Ogimi with similar views as the one above, but is better suited for experienced hikers who want more of a challenge.

Tours in Yanbaru National Park

/ /  Jungle River Trek: Private Tour of Yanbaru National Park : If you’re more comfortable hiking with a guide or in a group setting, this is a great tour to consider. They can cater and customize it to your fitness abilities, so the trek can vary from a gentle, dry path stroll for water and tea to more rigorous routes, navigating rocks and boulders and visiting two or more waterfalls.

The rest of the day will depend on how you feel from hiking. Here are some suggestions for things to do:

If you did light hiking, Ibu Beach is a great landing point for an afternoon of relaxing. 

It’s perfect if you want to be off the beaten path as it’s secluded with a small parking area.  Other great beaches in Okinawa are Emerald Beach , Araha Beach , or Manza Beach depending on where you’re based.

Japanese Dining Experience

Japan has honed the art of fun dining experiences, especially if you’re traveling with a larger group. If you’ve done some rigorous hiking during the day, your appetite will be primed for these dining experiences Japan is known for.

/ / Izakaya | Informal Japanese bar with drinks and snacks. Casual dining.

– Where to go : Koryori Dining Midori , Shima Robata Fuji , or Inakamono .

/ / Yakiniku | “grilled meat”- You cook the meat and food yourself on a grill in the center of the table. Casual dining.

– Where to go : Yakiniku Ryukyunoushi Onnabekkan , Usi no ibukuro , or Ryukyu No Ushi .

/ / Omakase | Meaning, “respectfully leaving it to the chef to decide what’s best”. It’s typically a multi-course sushi dinner. The setting is on the nicer side of things and reservations should be made in advance.

Cape Manzamo

Cape Manzamo is another famous sunset spot on Okinawa. 

The oceanfront rock is shaped like an elephant’s truck, which is why it’s so popular. It lands on the more touristy side of things, but if it’s close to your accommodation for the night, it still makes for a gorgeous sunset.

Okinawa Itinerary: Day 4 & 5

Kerama Islands National Park is a cluster of islands off the southern coast of Okinawa. The main island is called Tokashiki, so I’ll be using those two names interchangeably in the next two sections.

The main three islands in the park are Tokashiki, Aka, and Zamami. All three have ferries to and from Naha and between one another.

That said, there are endless ways you can spend the days in this National Park. All three offer pristine white beaches, crystal clear water, and unspoiled nature so you really cannot go wrong with whatever you choose.

If you want to relax, I’d say spend both days on Tokashiki to reduce transit (that’s what I’ve written about). If you’re eager to explore, go with the other two islands. Or all three. The ocean is your oyster.

Kerama Islands National Park

The Kerama Islands are all about slowing down, relaxing, and soaking up the sun- the absolute perfect way to end this Okinawa itinerary. 

Spend these next few days immersed in some of the world’s clearest waters. These are some of the highlights of Tokashiki Island:

Things to do on Tokashiki Island

/ / Snorkel with sea turtles along Tokashiku Beach . This pristine beach is a playground for sea turtles. Know you cannot snorkel without a life vest at this beach, so be sure to rent one of those with your snorkel gear. It can be purchased at the beach. There’s not much around, so pack snacks.

/ / Relax on Aharen Beach . This is the most popular beach on Tokashiki Island. Its stunning crescent moon-shape is lined with lush tropical rainforests.

/ / Take in the views on the Mt. Teruyama Observation Deck . One of the best viewpoints on the island overlooking Aharen Beach.

/ / Jet ski, paddle board, or kayak over the famous ‘Kerama Blue’ water . Water so blue it has its own name. Multiple dive shops around the island rent all the items you need for a fun day on the water.

/ / Take a paddle tour from Aharen Beach to Hanari Island . 800 m (0.5 miles) offshore of Aharen Beach is a stunning, uninhabited island. Book your paddle tour or browse more top-rated tours below.

Tokashiki Island Guided Tours

/ / From Aharen Beach: 2-Hour Sea Turtle Snorkel Tour : On this tour, you’ll board a yacht directly from the beach to an offshore snorkeling spot with many coral reefs, tropical fish, and green sea turtles. A major plus is that the tour boat doesn’t hold a ton of people so the waters won’t be crowded.

/ / 2-Hour Sea Kayak To Hanari Island From Aharen Beach : This 2-hour kayaking tour takes you to an uninhabited island right off the coast of Aharen Beach. You’ll paddle through a cave and explore the island on foot before returning to Tokashiki Island. This is a great option if you have limited time due to a day trip or if the waters are too cold for swimming.

/ /  3-Hour Sea Kayak & Snorkel Tour To Hanari Island From Aharen Beach : This 3-hour tour takes you to the deserted Hanari, also called Shibugaki Island, right off the coast of Aharen Beach. Depending on the tide height, you’ll paddle through a cave and scenic rocky areas before arriving leisurely at the island. Once you’re there, the guides will take you up the mountains while telling local stories of the area. After coming back down to the beach, you’ll finish the tour with snorkeling off the coast before heading back to Aharen Beach. This is a great tour for day trippers and those who want to fully immerse themselves in Tokashiki Island.

How To Get To Tokashiki Island

The only way to get to Tokashiki Island is via ferry from this terminal at the Tomari Port in Naha.

The Tokashiki Ferry departs for the Tokashiki Port twice daily. You can buy tickets up to 30 minutes in advance and board the ferry up to 10 minutes before departure. One-way tickets typically cost around ¥2700 ($18).

I recommend purchasing tickets in advance since ferries fill fast, especially during the summer months. Also, keep in mind that ferries can be canceled in poor weather.

How to Get To Aka and Zamami Islands from Tokashiki

You can get to Aka and Zamami Islands from the Aharen Port on Tokashiki.

The little boat is called ‘Ferry Mistushima’ and you have to make your reservation a day before you want to depart. To make a reservation you need to call the office: Zamami Village Office 098-987-2614. They take reservations until 5 p.m. the day before you want to depart.

The ferry leaves only twice a day from both ports: From Aharen Port : at 9:05 AM and 4:05 PM. From Zamami Port : at 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM. View the full timetable here .

On this Okinawa itinerary are all of the best things to do in Okinawa in every season, but there are some activities you can only do in certain seasons, such as seeing early-season cherry blossoms in winter or the Naha Tug-of-War. How Many Days Is Enough For Okinawa?

If you’re only planning on visiting mainland Okinawa, 3-5 days is a good amount of time to see the main sights and also get off the beaten path. I recommend staying for at least a week if you plan on island hopping in the Kerama or Yaeyama Islands.

Where To Stay in Okinawa

There are a lot of different areas you can stay in Okinawa, but the more central the better. I have a recommendation below for this itinerary. Otherwise, look at properties in Onna, Nago, or Yomitan. 

/ /  MAMBO HOSTEL | This hostel is top-rated if you’re traveling to Okinawa on a budget. They have mixed and female dorms available. Each room has a terrace with a mountain view, shared bathroom, and free Wifi. They also have a shared lounge, garden, and free parking onsite. It’s a stone’s throw from the Churami Aquarium and other spots in the Nago area. Other great hostels worth considering are the Seawall Hostel for something more central and the Yanbaru Hostel for something further north.

/ /  AKACHICHI GUESTHOUSE | This fantastic mid-range stay is right in the middle of Okinawa- prime for exploring north or south. It’s a bed and breakfast surrounded by sugarcane fields. There’s a turquoise beach within walking distance (that alone would sell me lol). The property has a garden, terrace, air-con, free Wifi, and breakfast available. Another huge plus is you can book tours and classes directly through them. This is where I recommend staying for this itinerary.

/ /  TREEFUL TREEHOUSE | This 5-star sustainable hotel is one of the most beautiful accommodation options on Okinawa. It’s located outside of Nago and is ideal for getting into nature for pure relaxation before exploring the northern part of the island. It’s definitely a splurge, though. Each suite has free wifi, air-con, a fridge, oven, coffee machine, bidet, free toiletries, and a desk.  There’s also a garden, free parking, terrace, and restaurant on site.

How To Get To Okinawa

There are a variety of different ways to get to Okinawa. You’ll need to leave from either Osaka, Tokyo, or Sapporo since these are the only cities with flights to Okinawa. From there, the island is a flight, or train and ferry away.

The fastest and cheapest way to get to Okinawa is by plane. It’s a 3-hour flight from Tokyo, 2 hour flight from Osaka, and 4 hours from Sapporo. The major airports in each city (Haneda, Narita, Osaka International, and New Chitose) all have a handful of direct flights leaving for Okinawa daily. Flying is affordable and will set you back around $100 outside of major holidays.

If you don’t want to fly, the other option is to take a bullet train south to Kagoshima, and then take a ferry across the South China Sea. This is the most expensive option and also takes the longest. Unless you want the scenic route, I don’t recommend doing this.

How To Get Around Okinawa

Okinawa is chalked full of transport options, so even if you’re tackling an Okinawa itinerary without a car, you don’t need to worry about how you’re going to get around. These are the most popular options for getting around the mainland and other islands.

The best way to get around Okinawa is by far with a rental car so you can travel on your schedule and have total freedom. It’s affordable and straightforward, but do note that driving is on the left side of the road and an International Driving Permit (IDP) is legally required to rent a car. You’ll want to brush up on common road signs in Japan before you arrive.

When you’re booking, be sure to add car insurance to your rental car as well as an ETC card for the tollways. If your travel credit card offers car insurance, double-check the policy to see if it will work for your trip to save money while you travel. With the ETC card, you’ll save money and time every time you enter and exit an expressway.

Also good to know: the roads in Okinawa are well-maintained, so you won’t need anything crazy like high clearance or 4×4.

If you’re on a budget Okinawa itinerary, the Yui Rail is an affordable way to get around. It connects 19 stations in just under 40 minutes between the Naha Airport and the Tedako-Uranishi Station.

It makes the most sense to use it if you’re on a city break and staying within Naha. Otherwise, it doesn’t connect to major areas around the island, in which you’d need a bus to access.

There are a few different ticket options depending on your trip type. 1 & 2-day tickets are the most popular for travelers.

/ / QR 1-Day (￥800): unlimited rides

/ /  QR 2-Day (￥1,400): unlimited rides

/ /  Okinawa IC Card (￥1000-10000): prepaid card

They can all be purchased at ticket vending machines inside the rail stations.

Buses are a budget-friendly way to get around the main island. There are local buses, tourist buses, and airport services that run all around the island, from Naha to Nago.

Paying by the ride is cash only. You can use ¥1,000 bills and all coins except ¥1 and ¥5 coins. Also, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 bills aren’t accepted on buses, so have smaller bills and change before boarding.

The prepaid OKICA IC Card (the same one you can use for the Yui Rail) is the other option if you’ll be using the bus frequently. You can buy them at the monorail stations, bus stations, and certain Family Mart locations around Okinawa.

If you’re traveling short distances, taxis can be useful for getting around. They’re not typically budget-friendly though. The GO App is useful for hailing taxis. Uber is another good option since all the drivers are registered taxi drivers.

Rental Bikes

Okinawa CHURA CHARI is a bike share service similar to Lime here in the US. It’s a streamlined service where you rent and pay for a bike through the app and return it at your destination.

They’re only available in Naha, a bit further south in Itoman, and around Yomitan. With the app you can see nearby bike stations and other availability.

Express Ferry

If you’re going island hopping in Okinawa, which you should do, there is a massive network of ferries to the surrounding islands. There is the option to fly to some of the larger islands like Ishigaki and Miyako, but for smaller ones, the only way to access them is by boat.

Ferries will always be cheaper than flights, so keep that in mind. Japan Airlines hosts most of the flights, but you can view all the options by searching with Kiwi . It’s a third-party site, but when you search with it you can see all your options in one search. Once you find your flight on there, book it directly with whatever airline.

Flights to major islands typically cost a touch under $100, but it depends on where you’re going and what season it is. The best tool for knowing how to get to each island is Rome2Rio . You put in two destinations and it tells you every way you can get between them. There are a lot of islands to consider when looking at ferry services, so this website will give you transit times, prices, and links for tickets.

Best Time To Visit Okinawa

5 Days Okinawa Itinerary

Say you have 5 days to travel in Okinawa , how would you spend these days in the best possible way for an unforgettable subtropical island holiday? Okinawa consists of more than 160 islands, so in order to minimize travel time and costs and maximize your fun time, this 5 days Okinawa itinerary is concentrated on the Main Island * and the small islands nearby. It is good to note that the itinerary below works best between April and October, because the weather and water temperature is best for swimming in the warmer months. You can, however, still travel to Okinawa between November and March and enter the ocean with a wetsuit but many people will find it too chilly. Let us present to you the perfect 5-day trip plan for Okinawa that includes various activities, culture, nature, and restaurant recommendations!

Day One: Arrival – Naha

Day two: a trip to tokashiki island, day three: yomitan – nago, day four: motobu, day five: tataki falls or yambaru – return to airport, traveling in japan, other articles you might be interested in.

There are several flights per day leaving for Naha from most major airports in mainland Japan. Of course, if you want to make the most of your time in Okinawa we recommend that you take a morning flight. If you don’t want to wake up at (or even before) the crack of dawn, staying in an airport hotel the night before is definitely a good idea. After arriving in Naha, drop off your luggage in the lobby of your chosen hotel first so you can go around Naha with your hands free. 

Assuming you still have most of the afternoon left, let’s head for Shuri Castle first to learn more about the region’s history. You will have an amazing view of the city from the observation areas of the castle, and while the castle itself will still be under construction for a while after the tragic fire in 2019, you can get an idea of how grand this center of Okinawa used to be. If you want to know more about the history, Hime Yuri Museum is also recommended. Okinawa is known for its beautiful beaches but it also has a sad war history.

Kinjo Stone Road , a picturesque old road that visitors of the castle used to take and has been well-preserved, is also nice to visit. It’s full of colorful flowers and if you walk from the castle’s direction it is all downhill. The pottery street of Tsuboya Yachimun , this atmospheric street has many cute little pottery shops where they sell Okinawa’s traditional kitchen wares. End your day in the famous Kokusai Dori , or International Street for some good shopping and people-watching.

Stay: in Naha (central)

Eat: Soka noodles in Inaka Kosetsuichiba Minami-ten (lunch or dinner)

Today you will make your first acquaintance with Okinawa’s gorgeous blue ocean! You will take the 9 am ferry (Marine Liner Tokashiki) to this small island that is part of the Kerama Island National Park. It is a good idea to book the ferry ahead of time as it fills up quickly in the summer season. You can either book a diving tour with one of the diving companies if you want to go scuba diving, or you can relax on the beach and snorkel by yourself. Diving tours are great for those who want to experience scuba diving and don’t want to worry about anything, as the company will take care of your transportation and equipment. Tokashiki has incredibly clear, deep blue water where you can meet sea turtles, small sharks, octopi, and all kinds of tropical fish. It will be one of the most unforgettable experiences in your life. 

If you want to enjoy Tokashiki by yourself, upon arrival in the harbor you can take the bus to Aharen Beach. On the beach, you can rent all kinds of equipment such as snorkeling wear, beach umbrellas, and other stuff that makes your stay more fun. They also have a service that transports you to the uninhabited island Hanari , which is simply one of the best snorkeling spots in the world with a soft white sand bottom dotted with coral formations. You can easily spend a whole day here if you love snorkeling, but in that case, you need to make sure to bring your own lunch with you as there are no shops on Hanari. If you’d also like to discover other parts of the island, you can rent bicycles , scooters, and cars in the harbor area and in the Aharen Beach area (you need a Japanese or international license for scooter and car rental). Because the island is rather small, you can’t really get lost. Make sure to catch the ferry back to Naha at 5:30 pm, and enjoy your dinner in Naha.

Eat: Okinawan izakaya food in Aguncha (dinner)

If you can drive in Japan (you need a Japanese or international driver’s license), today is the day to rent a car ( Niconico ). Otherwise, you will have to take the bus and use taxis* for shorter distances as trains don’t go up north so far. Your first stop will be the Banta Cafe of luxury hotel Hoshinoya Okinawa. You can enjoy their funky signature drinks and a snack if you’re hungry (go for the spam onigiri!) with an amazing ocean view in this gorgeous outdoor cafe. Then it is time for some active exercise in Forest Adventure Onna . You can enjoy fun zip lines and other large climbing equipment and challenge yourself physically. If you still have energy left, we recommend checking out the nearby Blue Cave , a popular spot to go snorkeling. You can rent equipment on the spot, or you can book a snorkeling tour with a local company . Also, Nago has the famous Henoko beach with U.S. base issue. Okinawa has amazingly beautiful beaches and rich nature that local people in Okinawa have protected for a long time. And the effort has continued still today. Henoko beach is really beautiful and you can often communicate with locals there. It is worth visiting for anyone caring for this planet. 

If you’d prefer doing something a bit less active and like making your own stuff you can check out Onna Glass Workshop . They don’t only offer the opportunity to create your own Ryukyu glassware, but you can also experience their cool illuminated glass labyrinth. At the end of the day, head to Nago for dinner and check in at your hotel.

Stay: in Nago

Eat: The Bros Sandwich Stand (lunch) and hamburgers at Warren’s Place 2.1

Today will be a day full of ocean fun, so wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes and bring your towels and a few bottles of water for showering. First, head to Sesoko island’s Anchi Beach . You can rent snorkeling equipment on the beach, the shallow, clear waters here are perfect for floating around while enjoying the underwater view and above the water with a long bridge spanning the distance between Motobu and Sesoko. Alternatively, you can also book a SUPping tour  to the same beach for some relaxing stand-up paddling on the relatively calm water. Enjoy your lunch in the open air on Sesoko before heading north to Bisezaki Kaigan . This lush green seaside area features shadow-rich lanes lined by tropical fukugi trees that you can enjoy by rental bicycle or ox cart. Here, you can take another dip in the sea in a shallow area teeming with fish and with a gentle stream that you can ‘ride’. Enjoy your time here leisurely before heading back to Nago.

Eat: Taco Rice at Shimahiro or Fuu Cafe (lunch) and Okinawan home-style food at Chura-hana

It is already your last day in Okinawa, but let’s wake up early and enjoy it to the max! Your schedule of the day will depend on which time your airplane leaves, hopefully, you were able to book a return flight that leaves after 7 pm. If you have less time, a trip to Takaki Falls is recommended. This lovely short hike via a streaming river (around 30 minutes one-way) brings you to a paradise-like waterfall where you can take a refreshing dive in the small lake. The drive back to Naha airport will take around 1.5 hours if you take the toll road.

If you have a bit more time on your hands (and a rental car at your disposal), you can go to Yambaru, the jungly northern part of Okinawa. Stop by the Yambaru Adventure Farm for a dirty but fun ride on an ATV on their mud course and taste their delicious local coffee afterward. Then, drive to the Okinawa Rail Learning Center to meet the rare and endangered rail (bird) that can only be seen here. Keep in mind that the drive back to Naha airport will take around 2.5 hours if you take the toll road and longer if you take the scenic coastal road.

Eat: coffee and curry at Matayoshi Coffee Farm

Cost of a Trip to Okinawa City, JP & the Cheapest Time to Visit Okinawa City

The average price of a 7-day trip to Okinawa City is $1,993 for a solo traveler, $3,579 for a couple, and $6,710 for a family of 4 . Okinawa City hotels range from $51 to $294 per night with an average of $62, while most vacation rentals will cost $150 to $470 per night for the entire home. Average worldwide flight costs to Naha Airport ( OKA ) are between $1,129 and $1,611 per person for economy flights and $3,543 to $5,055 for first class. 7-Day Okinawa Itinerary Under S$1.2k — Road Trip in Japan’s Underrated Island Utopia

Okinawa = Japan + beaches = paradise 🌴 But rest assured, beaches aren’t the only heavenly thing in this Okinawa itinerary.

For someone who’s not a beach person, I ended up enjoying myself in Okinawa a lot more than I expected. As Japan’s southernmost prefecture, this sun-kissed island also runs by another name: the Hawaii of Japan. No prizes for guessing why.

Yet, this paradisal island isn’t just about its beaches. A little online digging reveals that Okinawa has centuries of intriguing culture and history — far different from the Japanese mainland — that makes it worth visiting.

For example, Okinawans have different dietary preferences (e.g. pork over beef). Okinawa also isn’t as expensive ( even for flights ) or urbanised as Tokyo, and it’s a lot more laidback. To experience Okinawa in its entirety from famous attractions to hidden gems, it’s best to rent a car to explore the island.

Okinawa Travel Guide: 1 to 5-day Okinawa Itinerary without a car for first time visitors

Before going to Okinawa, I had no idea what to do or see in Naha and other parts of the main island. And as I was researching all the best attractions in Okinawa, I thought I would need a car to see all the sites.

But after spending over a month on Okinawa Main Island, I can confidently say that you can see many parts of the island on your own and without a car. Plus, you can see the best of Okinawa in only 5 days.

I compiled a solo Okinawa itinerary for independent travellers going to Okinawa for one to five days. If this is your first time going to Okinawa, keep reading and find out how you can travel in Okinawa without a car and see all the best attractions on your own.

Okinawa travel guide: what you need to know

Before you start your solo trip to Okinawa, take a look at some of these useful travel tips for your day trip:

• Get money from ATMs at the airport or 7-Eleven
• Selected 7-Eleven or Family Mart in Naha city centre – Esim Plus tourist SIM card from ￥900 for a SIM card and top up 3, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days.
• Online – Order an eSIM from ￥1,099 for 1GB for 5 days (check if your mobile phone support eSim)
• Naha Hārī (May) – see dragon boat races, sumo tournaments and fireworks at Naha Shinto Wharf. It is Okinawa’s largest Dragon Boat festival.
• Naha Great Tug-of-war Festival (October) – see a parade and live show, and see the tug-of-war rope, recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest rope in the world.
• Naha Sakura Festival at Yogi Park
• Nago City Cherry Blossom Festival at Nago Central Park

How to get to Okinawa Japan

Many international and domestic flights fly into Naha Airport , which is located on the southwestern side of Okinawa Main island.

Since Naha is only 3km from the airport, the easiest and cheapest way to get to Naha city centre is by taking the monorail . I highly recommend choosing a hotel near a monorail station to get around Naha and other parts of the island easily.

How to travel around Okinawa without a car

Many travellers visiting Okinawa will explore the island with a car because Okinawa Main Island is quite big, and certain places can only be reached by car.

However, if you don’t want to bother with car rental, don’t have a driver’s license, or just don’t want to bother with driving and finding parking spots, I have some options for you.

Walking is the best way to see Naha in Okinawa. This is the best option for exploring Naha city centre and the areas around the monorail stations .

Okinawa Urban Monorail – Yui Rail

Okinawa Urban Monorail , also known as Yui Rail , is a monorail linking Naha Airport, Naha, and Urasoe on the main island of Okinawa. This is the best way to travel from the airport to central Naha.

One way ticket starts from ￥230 . Or you can use Okica or other IC Cards , a rechargeable smartcard that allows you to take public transportation. Okica cards can be purchased from the ticket vending machine. Purchase amount includes￥500 deposit.

1-day monorail pass (￥800) and 2-day monorail pass (￥1400) are also available. You may get discounts on admission fees to Shuri Castle, Tamaudun, Shikinaen Garden, Okinawa Prefectural Museum and the Former Navy Underground Headquarters.

Okinawa Bus

Okinawa Bus Ltd. has several bus companies that operate different routes throughout the island. Many of these routes start at Naha Bus Terminal next to Asahibashi Station .

Travelling within central Naha costs ￥240 per ride. And if you travel further, the fare is based on the distance travelled .

When you get on the bus, get a ticket. And when you are near your destination, watch the screen with your corresponding number; it will indicate your fee. The fee is paid when you alight. Pay exact change as change is not given.

Alternatively, you can use Okica or other IC Cards . Just tap when you get on the bus and tap out when you alight.

Moreover, 1-day bus pass (￥2,500) and 3-day bus pass (￥5,000) are available. These options are excellent for taking day trips around the island.

High-speed boat or ferry

A high-speed boat or ferry is an excellent way to see nearby islands. Both options are available for visiting Tokashiki Island , Zamami Island and other islands near Naha.

And you can also travel to other parts of Okinawa Main Island, like Motobu . The Jinbei Marine (Takuma 3) high-speed boat starts from Tomari Port dock 7C in Naha and goes to Nago, then Motobu .

Where to stay in Naha Okinawa as a solo traveller

If you are visiting Naha Okinawa for the first time, stay somewhere central and close to a monorail station so you can get around Okinawa easily.

I highly recommend staying near  Asahibashi Station  or  Miebashi Station  because you can take the monorail from the Naha Airport to the city centre and walk to your hotel.

You can technically see all the best highlights in Naha in two days . But I highly recommend staying a few more days to explore other parts of Okinawa Main Island. And it is possible to see other parts of Okinawa island without a car.

1 Day in Okinawa: best things to do in Naha

Naha is the perfect city to start your Okinawa trip. It was the political and economic center during the Ryukyu Kingdom. Today, the capital city of Okinawa is the biggest and most populous city on the island.

On your first day in Naha, see all the best attractions around the city centre.

1. Famous tourist attractions in Naha

Walk northwest towards the water and some of the famous tourist attractions on day 1 of your Okinawa trip. There is a lovely manicured garden, shrine, temple, and a white sand beach with crystal blue water.

• Fukushuen Garden (9am-9pm; closed Wednesdays; ￥200) – a Chinese-style garden built using traditional techniques from Fuzhou, China.
• Naminoue Shrine (9am-5pm; free) – a Shinto shrine perched on a cliff overlooking Naminoue Beach. Boats entering Naha Port pray for a safe journey, while people visiting the shrine pray for a rich harvest.
• Naminoue Beach (24 hours; free) – the only beach in Naha. It’s next to a highway, but the water is crystal clear.

The neighbourhood of Tsuboya is synonymous with ceramics. It was once a major center of ceramic production until it was moved to Yomitan, a village 30km north of Naha.

However, you can still see traces of its ceramic past in this area. There are two old step kilns, a museum, and a historic residence.

Check out these highlights of Tsuboya:

• Tsuboya Yachimun Street – find unique Okinawan ceramics at one of many family-run shops on this cobblestone street.
• Naha Municipal Tsuboya Pottery Museum (10am-6pm; closed Mondays;￥350) – get a free audio guide and walk through the museum. Learn about the history of Okinawan pottery and various pottery techniques and see the excavated remains of Hira-gama flat kiln.
• Arakaki Residence (1-5pm Friday to Sunday; free) – learn about the history of ceramic production in Tsuboya and see an old step kiln.

2. Naha city centre

Naha City Center is centred around Kokusai Dori , the city’s main street and all the covered shopping streets and attractions in the surrounding area.

Several stations serve central Naha on the Okinawa Urban Monorail, and it is the best place to eat dinner and buy souvenirs.

Look for these highlights while you are meandering the shopping streets:

• Kokusai Dori Shopping Street – 1.6km long street with souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. On Sundays, the street is for pedestrians only.
• Heiwadori Shopping Arcade – covered shopping street with souvenir and second-hand shops.
• Tsuboya Ufu Shisa – it is said that the shisa came to Okinawa from China in the 15th century. The mythical creature inspired by the lion, is a guardian deity and an important part of the Okinawan culture. It invites good luck and blocks evil spirits. You’ll see many of these at the entrances of buildings.
• Saion Ufu Shisa – this is the brother of Tsuboya Ufu Shisa.
• Makishi Public Market (8am-10pm) – you can still see the market filled with fresh seafood, meat, produce, and restaurants at the temporary location. The original market location is in the middle of construction.

2 Days in Okinawa: things to see around Naha

On day 2 of your Okinawa trip, visit other parts of Naha and a neighbouring city called Urasoe . The best way to see all the tourist attractions is by taking the monorail to Urasoemaeda Station, Shuri Station, and Omoromachi Station .

How to get around Okinawa on Day 2: buy a 1-day monorail pass (￥800) and get unlimited use for 24 hours. Show your day pass to certain facilities (Shuri Castle, Tamaudun Mausoleum, and Okinawa Prefectural Museum) and get a discount.

1. Attractions in Urasoe City (Urasoemaeda Station)

Urasoe City is just north of Naha City and near the end of the monorail line. It was the birthplace of the Ryukyu Kingdom and still has many historical sites related to the culture today.

While there are many things to see in Urasoe, focus on these two attractions in Urasoe Park so you can have time for other sites later.

• Urasoe Castle Ruins (24 hours; free) – see what’s remaining of Urasoe Castle from the 13th century. Also, look for Stone paved Road ; it was part of the path of King ShōNei Historic Road from Shuri Castle to Urasoe Castle.
• Urasoe Yodore (9am-6pm; free) – the tombs of King Eiso (west crypt) and King ShōNei (east crypt) are found in the hillside caves where stone coffins were put in the crypts. However, the crypts are closed with a masonry wall but are still cool to see.

2. Highlights around Shuri Castle (Shuri Station)

Hop on the monorail, take it to Shuri Station, and explore the area. There are several sites in the Shuri area that you do not want to miss.

• Sairaiin (Daruma Temple) (7am-6pm; free) – walk through a series of bright red torii gates and see the daruma dolls (round Japanese traditional dolls aka a lucky talisman) at this Buddhist temple.
• Shurijo Castle (8:30am-6pm; ￥400) – the former royal palace was one of the best attractions in Naha. But unfortunately, many areas, including the main hall, burnt down on October 31, 2019. But you can still go up to the observation deck for a panoramic view of the area. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Tamaudun (9am-6pm; ￥300) – the Royal Mausoleum built in 1501 for King Sho En and 19 Ryukyu kings who ruled between 1470 and 1879. The tomb has three crypts, but they are not accessible. There is also a small museum, but everything is written in Japanese. Registered as a World Heritage Site.
• Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Path (24 hours; free) – built in the 16th century during the Ryukyu Kingdom, the ancient cobblestone path connects Shuri Castle to other districts. Today, you can see traditional Okinawan houses and several springs along the path.

3. Other attractions in Naha (Omoromachi Station)

And finally, get back on the monorail and take it to Omoromachi Station in Naha City’s new downtown area. This is a relatively new commercial area in Okinawa. You can enjoy a bit of culture and do some major shopping!

• Okinawa Prefectural Museum (9am-6pm; closed Mondays; ￥530 General, ￥400 Art Museum, ￥800 temporary exhibition) – learn about Okinawa’s Ryukyu culture through its permanent collection which has over 100,000 artifacts.
• T Galleria Okinawa by DFS – enjoy duty-free shopping with over 140 brand-name stores at this upscale mall.
• San-A Naha Main Place – local shopping mall with a department store, grocery shop, restaurants and a movie theatre.

3 Days in Okinawa: day trip to Yomitan and Mihama American Village

During the late 1970s, Okinawa’s ceramic production moved from Tsuboya in Naha to Yomitan Village , 30km north of Naha. The area thrived as the population grew. Today, it is one of the best attractions on Okinawa Main Island.

Yomitan has other highlights, including a lighthouse at the northern tip of Yomitan and many beaches dotting the pristine coast. For this itinerary, we’ll focus on the area around Yomitan Village.

How to get around Okinawa on day 3: get a 1-day bus day pass (￥2,500) at the tourist information centre or Naha Bus Terminal. FYI – it costs ￥1,100 from Naha to Yomitan, ￥630 from Yomitan to American Village and ￥740 from American Village to Naha. Buying the day pass is about the same same amount but you may end up taking more bus rides and it will save the hassle.

1. Yomitan Village

Yomitan pottery village (yochimun no sato).

Yomitan Pottery Village is the heart of the ceramic scene and has over 50 artisanal potters. Each pottery workshop sells its creations and operates at different times. If there is a specific shop you want to visit, check the hours of operation before you go.

See the large step kiln in the centre of the village and nearby coffee shops. And if you are visiting in November, check out Yomitan Yachimun Pottery Market . It is Okinawa’s largest pottery market, and it only happens once a year.

Zakimi Castle

During the early 15th century, Zakimi Castle was built to protect from invaders from the north. It was built with several innovative masonry techniques to create a solid stonewall and a strong foundation for the castle.

However, only the wavelike stone walls remain today. But this is still worth visiting since Zakimi Castle is one of the best-preserved examples of an Okinawan castle defensive design. And it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is free to visit the castle. But there’s a fee for Yuntanza Museum (9am-6pm; ￥500) at the entrance. It has exhibits showcasing the history of the castle and the area’s craft heritage.

How to get to Yomitan : from anywhere in Naha, take bus 20, 28, 29 or 120 ( see route for bus 20 and 120 from Naha Bus Terminal to Yomitan Pottery Village ). Alight at Oyashi Iriguchi bus stop and walk 14 minutes .

2. Mihama American Village

Located in Chatan, a town in central Okinawa, Mihama American Village is a large entertainment complex and an outdoor shopping centre with a theme-park-type atmosphere .

Mihama American Village got its name because over 50% of Chatan is covered by US military bases. This is the area where you can find everything Americana, from food and shopping to everything else.

Here are some things to check out:

• Shop and eat at Depot Island , a large entertainment and shopping complex
• Visit Christmas Land , a store filled with all things Christmas
• Visit nearby beaches like Sunset Beach and Araha Beach
• See large-scale woodblock prints at Bokunen Art Museum
• Watch the sunset at the Sunset Walk promenade
• Eat American or Mexican food (Tacos Cafe Taco Loco is really good!)

How to get to Mihama American Village : walk 14 minutes to Uza Kominkan bus stop from Zakimi Castle and take bus 28 or 29 ( see the route for bus 28 & 29 from Zakimi Castle to Mihama American Village ). Then, walk 4 minutes towards the harbour.

How to get back to Naha : take bus 20, 28, 29 or 120 at Mihama American Village Iriguchi bus stop ( see the route for bus 28 & 29 from Mihama American Village to Naha Bus Terminal ).

4 Days in Okinawa: day trip to Motobu

Motobu is a small town on the northwestern Okinawan Main Island, 85km north of Naha. The Motobu Peninsula is known for several attractions, including Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium at Ocean Expo Park, Nakijin Castle Ruins and cherry blossoms in Yaedake Sakuranomori Park .

Because of the accessibility and timing of the high-speed boat, day 4 of your Okinawa itinerary will focus mainly on around Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and the surrounding area.

How to get to Motobu: Take Jinbei Marine (Takuma 3) to Motobu Toguchi Port from Tomari Port in Naha. The high-speed boat departs from port 7C at 8:30am, taking 2 hours. Then take a cab to the aquarium . On the way back, take a cab to the port and hop on the 4pm boat . Buy tickets at the ticket offices at Tomari Port and Toguchi Port. It costs ￥1,000 each way.

1. Ocean Expo Park – Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Ocean Expo Park is a state-run park in the western Motobu Peninsula region that originated from Expo 75, a World’s Fair held at the exact spot in 1975.

While most exhibits were removed, many new ones have been added to the park, including the most popular attraction: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the most popular attraction at Ocean Expo Park. It has the world’s largest aquarium , with a tank capacity of about 10,000 tons .

The highlight has to be seeing the whale sharks and manta rays at the Kuroshio Sea tank . Besides the giant tank, you can see other tropical fish and other sea creatures in the coral, deep sea, and other fish tanks.

When leaving the aquarium, ensure you don’t miss several attractions outside. You can see the Manatee pool, sea turtle pool and dolphin lagoon .

It costs ￥2,180 when you buy a ticket at the aquarium and ￥1,950 at Umichurara (souvenir store on Kokusai Dori) or the tourist information centre. The aquarium is open from 8:30am-6:30pm.

Native Okinawan Village

If you have time after the aquarium, see traditional Okinawan life in a reconstructed village from the Ryukyu Kingdom era at the Native Okinawan Village . Also, see the Omoro Arboretum with native Okinawan plants. The entrance is free.

2. Emerald Beach and Bise Village

For the remainder of the day trip, spend some time around Emerald Beach at the far northeast corner of Ocean Expo Park and Bis Village .

Emerald Beach

The Y-shaped white sand Emerald Beach is one of the 6 Michelin Guide’s top beaches in Okinawa, and it is the only Michelin-starred beach on the main island (I didn’t know beaches could have Michelin stars – who knew?!)

See the white sand and crystal aqua water around this famed beach. You can swim and rent equipment from April to October. But you can still visit the beach during other months.

Bise Village

Just north of Emerald Beach is Bise Village , a coastal village known for its many Fukugi Trees (garcinia trees) that protect the village from natural causes, including typhoons.

You can walk around the village and see rows of Fukugi Trees, Sea Almond Trees, cultural properties, unusual stone walls made from poritid corals and more.

If you rent a bicycle, you can cycle all the way to Bisezaki , the northern tip of the peninsula. The water there is shallow and blue.

5 Days in Okinawa: day trips around Naha

On day 5 of your Naha trip, take an excursion to one of the nearby islands or join an organized trip with fun activities around the waters of Okinawa.

Here are some options for day trips around Naha.

1. Tokashiki Island

Only 35 minutes from Naha, Tokashiki Island is the largest of the Kerama Islands , which is part of Keramashoto National Park . The tropical island is known for its white sand beaches, crystal “Kerama blue” water and magnificent viewpoints.

Here is a 1-day itinerary for exploring Tokashiki Island on your own:

• After arriving at Tokashiki Port, take the local bus (￥400) to the end at Aharen Enchi . There are several lookout points.
• Walk to Aharen Beach , a white sand beach and enjoy some water activities.
• Follow Sondo Aharen Road to Tokashiku Beach and snorkel with sea turtles.
• Hike back to the port via Sondo Otani Road . Along the way, see Taiwanese cherry blossom trees , West and East Lookouts, and the Site of Mass Suicide .
• Continue on Sondo Seinen no le Road back to Tokashiki Port.
• Browse around Tokashiki Village before getting the ferry back to Naha.

How to get to Tokashiki Island: take either Marine Liner Tokashiki high-speed boat or a regular ferry from Tomari Port to Tokashiki Island . Choose the high-speed boat (￥2,630 one-way and ￥4,910 roundtrip; 35 minutes) because it is faster than the ferry (￥1,790 one-way and￥3,210 roundtrip; 70 minutes). High-speed boat leaves Tomari Port at 9am at dock 7B and returns at 5pm at Tokashiki Port . Reserve a ticket in advance between May to October or buy one at the counter at Tomari Port.

2. Zamami Island

Zamami Island is known for its white sand beaches, “Kerama blue” water and a gorgeous sunset. It is also part of the Kerama islands, and it’s reachable by a 50-minute high-speed ferry ride from Naha.

When you spend a day on Zamami Island, here is what you can do:

• Visit Furuzamami Beach and rent equipment to snorkel, scuba dive, or standup paddle board .
• Hike up to Takatsukiyama Observation Deck and see a panoramic view of the Kerama archipelago.
• See humpback whales return to warm Zamami during the winter season.
• Rent a bicycle and cycle around the hilly island.
• Take a local boat to Aka Island .

How to get to Zamami Island: take the Queen Zamami high-speed ferry (￥3,200 one-way and￥6,080 roundtrip; 50 minutes) from Tomari Port to Zamami Port . The high-speed boat leaves Tomari Port at 9am at dock 7A and returns at 4:50pm at Zamami Port . Reserve a ticket in advance between May to October, or buy one at the counter at Tomari Port.

3. Organized day tours from Naha

If you are not keen on self-guided day trips, there are many organized day tours that you can join while you are in Naha.

Many of them can be booked locally, but if you are going during high season (i.e. summer), you might want to secure a spot on a tour so you don’t miss out on a fantastic trip.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Snorkelling around Kerama Islands – see tropical fish and coral reefs in the crystal-clear waters of Kerama Islands National Park from April to October.
• Diving trip around Kerama Islands – learn how to dive on this full-day excursion in Kerama Islands National Park.

What to eat in Naha Okinawa

Okinawan cuisine differs from  typical Japanese cuisine  due to its unique geographical location and influences from China, South East Asia and the US. So even if you typically eat Japanese food, you must try the local food in Okinawa and see what the fuss is about because it is so good!

I have a food guide to eating in Okinawa , but here is a quick summary of food you must try in Naha:

• Okinawa Soba  – Okinawan noodle soup made with wheat noodles, fish cakes and pork belly
• Taco Rice  – Tex-Mex ingredients (ground beef, lettuce, cheese, tomato) on top of rice
• Goya Champuru  – Okinawan stir-fry with bitter gourd/melon
• Okinawa Agu Pork  – primary pork breed in Okinawa
• Okinawa Onigiri  – spam and egg Japanese rice ball
• Beni imo  – purple sweet potato
• Umibudo  – a type of edible seaweed aka “sea grapes”
• Okinawa ice cream  – try local flavours like  Okinawan salt cookies ,  Shikuwasa sherbet ,  Beni imo , and  Ryukyu Royal Milk Tea

Where to eat in Naha Okinawa

Traditional Okinawan food in Naha is served in local diners, izakaya restaurants and other food places. Just make sure to check the hours of operation  before you go. Noodle shops and some restaurants open between 10am-3pm while many izakaya restaurants only open after 5pm and stay open until late.

If you want to watch a show during dinner, some touristy izakaya restaurants have live singing performances during dinner service . Typically, there are two rounds of performances each night. Look for signs at the entrance of izakaya restaurants like the one below.

If you only have a few days in Naha, try one of these places. They are some of my favourite places to eat in Naha.

• Okinawa Soba Eibun  – a very popular noodle shop serving Okinawa soba
• Shuri Soba  – go early and try Okinawa soba with noodles or without
• Nuchigafu  – instagrammable set lunches and dinners serving Okinawan cuisine
• Yunangi  – homey izakaya restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner
• Dachibin  – best izakaya restaurant in a renovated Japanese-style house. Surcharge is applicable
• Pork Tamago Onigiri  – they sell spam and egg onigiri and variations of this classic Okinawan snack
• Blue Seal  – Okinawa’s most popular ice cream brand. Find one of many shops in Naha

Hi Ng Bee Hwa, Yes I walked between Zakimi Castle and Yomitan Village. It is a 30-minute walk but leisurely. There is also a bus but I just checked on Google Maps that it comes every 2 hours. It’s not frequent so walking might be a better option. Hope this helps! happy travels!

I wonder if there is any transportation to stay for a week near one of the beaches like Manza or Zampa Beach to have the possibility to spend some time on the beach after coming back from the trips. Hi Barbara, Aw thanks so much! From Okinawabus website, there are limousine buses to both places. For Manza Beach, the limo bus goes to ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach Resort. For Zampa Beach, the limo bus goes to Grand Mercure Hotel. When you are in Naha, go to the info centre at Naha Bus Terminal and confirm. They are very helpful and speak English. Enjoy your trip!

Getting to Naha, Okinawa from Singapore:

One of the reasons we added Okinawa to our travel list is that it is only a direct flight away from Singapore. Within 5 hours we reached Naha airport thanks to Jetstar Asia.

Renting a Car: Getting around Naha, the main island of Okinawa:

As there are many stunning coastal drives along Naha, we highly recommend renting a car to make the most of the visit. Outside the airport, are stands of shuttles offering to take passengers on the 10-minute drive to the nearest car rental company. We rented our car via Budget, pre-booked on Expedia. We recommend a good internet connection to be able to use Google Maps as well (as our GPS was mostly in Japanese).

The best time to visit Okinawa:

We visited during Late January and were treated to 20-25c weather, clear skies and limited crowds. We originally booked to visit in August the previous year, however, delayed our trip due to typhoons.

Where to stay in Naha:

We opted for a stay at the Harbourview hotel in Naha City, which included valet parking for a small daily rate. This location was an easy drive for most of our day trips and a short walk to restaurants in the evening. There are many accommodation options across Naha island though and with a car all are easily accessible which can be seen here.

Our Complete 4 Day Road Trip Itinerary around Okinawa:

Day 1 route: naha - cape manzamo - cape maeda - cape zanpa - america village - naha.

Cape Manzamo:

The sun warmed our backs as the light breeze swept across the calm ocean on a 25c clear day. We wandered past tropical green trees as we approached the famous Manzamo coastline, tour groups were in toe with this site drawing a crowd. We waited for a clearing between groups to get our perfect view of the elephant-shaped rock pushing out into the clear turquoise waters below.

Izakaya Lunch Stop - Cape Manzamo

We turned south along the stunning coastal drive for a further 20 mins towards Cape Maeda. Just 5 minutes past Manzamo, along the coastal highway, we stopped at a small Japanese house converted into an Izakaya restaurant (See stop 2 on our map). Here we sat on tatami mats and floor level and had our first taste of Okinawa’s famous Sea Grape and Soba. We wouldn’t have spend more than $30 for this feast.

Cape Maeda:

Upon arrival at Cape Maeda, the car park was filled with Diving and Snorkeling groups, this spot is famous for swimming in the blue cave. It’s possible to book a tour on the spot. We opted to walk along the rocky cliffs and take in the view, free from other tourists.

Cape Zanpa:

Continuing south, our next stop was Cape Zanpa lighthouse. For a $4 entry fee and 130m climb be treated to some spectacular aerial views of the Okinawa coastline. The views of the water below offered more shades of blue than we could count.

Here we stopped to try another famous Okinawan delicacy - Blue Seals local sweet potato purple ice cream. It was creamy and delicious.

The American Village:

Our final stop south on the way back to Naha was the American Village. Filled with souvenir shops, restaurants and vintage American memorabilia.

Evening in Naha City - Kokusai Dori

After reaching Naha City we walked 10 minutes from our hotel down to the bustling street of Kokusai Dori. A popular tourist strip, filled with restaurants. Here, we got our first taste of the Okinawa brewed Orion Beer, a must-try during your visit.

Day 2 Route: Naha - Kouri Island - Churaumi Aquarium - Naha Makishi Market

Kouri Island:

Experience 50 shades of blue driving across Japan's second-longest bridge connecting to a remote island. Driving to this island was a sight in itself not to be missed. Upon arrival, we stopped via the coast to walk along the water and take it all in. We spent the full morning at Kouri, here are our highlights:

Stop for lunch at the Kouri Shrimp food truck:

We loved the ocean views over a low-cost Japanese-Hawaiian fusion lunch of garlic shrimp, beef, rice and seaweed fries.

Take a buggy tour to the top of the Ocean Tower:

We next jumped on a cute buggy tour taking us to the views at the top of the Ocean Tower. On the way down we stopped to taste the soft pumpkin cookies made on-site, of which we brought several boxes home, these were the perfect souvenir!

Chuarium Aquarium:

From Kouri island, we headed south to Chuarium Aquarium, located again along a stunning coastline of clear blue waters. The highlight here was the large tank of manta's whale sharks.

Naha City Makishi Markets:

After a long day, we headed back to Naha to end the night with a shop and dinner around Naha City's Makishi Markets.

Day 3 Route: Naha - Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters - Umikaji Terrace - A&W - Okinawa World & Gyokusen-do Cave - Valley of Gangala - Naha

The Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters (WW2 Museum & tunnels) - Tomigusuku:

Just 15 minutes from our hotel was the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters from World War Two. We experienced the war history walking through meters of underground tunnels once critical in the battle for Okinawa.

Umikaji Terrace & the Hammock Cafe:

Also located in Naha City is the coastal area of Umikaji terrace, filled with waterfront restaurants. Here we stopped for a morning coffee at the Instagrammable Hammock Cafe.

Lunch at A&W:

Seemingly the most famous fast food restaurant in Okinawa is A&W. We made a lunch stop to try the juicy burgers and fries.

Okinawa World and Gyokusen-do Cave:

We spent our afternoon at Okinawa World. The highlight here was the 2km Gyokusen-do cave developed hundreds of thousands of years ago and taking more than 20 minutes to walk through. We also enjoyed some local culture here, watching a traditional drumming and dance show, as well as visiting some pineapple plantations.

Valley of Gangala:

Directly across the road from Okinawa World is the Valley of Gangala, a lush green valley of a once collapsed limestone cave. Walking tours are available hourly through the area, which can only be accessed as part of a tour. We managed to catch the last English tour of the day departing at 4 pm.

Day 4 Route: Exploring Naha City's Surrounds - Shurijo Castle - Tsuboya Pottery Village - Fukushuen Park - Dinner in an old Japanese Residence

Shurijo Castle:

Our first stop of the day was exploring the remnants of this world heritage castle and grounds while enjoying a view over Naha city.

Tsuboya Pottery Village:

We then shopped for some locally-made souvenirs at Tsuboya Pottery Village. We Took time to wander the cute streets & stop for the local Bukubuku tea, made from rice (Andrew also made a new friend).

Fukushuen Park:

Our last stop of the day was wandering the traditional gardens of Fukushuen Park.

Dinner at Komiya Shokudo Japanese Residence:

Finally we enjoyed dinner in a traditional Japanese house for under $30 for 2 people.

Navigating Okinawa is a breeze with these transportation options

There are plenty of options when it comes to getting around Okinawa. On the main island, public transportation such as monorail, buses, and taxis make traveling between destinations quick and convenient. But rental cars, bicycles, and motorcycles are a great way to get off the beaten path and explore at your own pace, especially on Okinawa’s more remote islands. Choose the option that best matches your itinerary.

Rental Vehicles

Rental bicycles, express ferries.

The Yui Rail monorail connects 19 stations in around just 40 minutes, and is a quick and convenient way to travel from Naha Airport to popular sightseeing destinations. Discount tickets allow for unlimited rides in a specified time period, making it a great option for traveling on a budget.

Rental cars, motorcycles, and RVs are perfect for travelers who want to get off the beaten path and explore Okinawa at their own pace. There are many vehicle rental companies throughout the islands, offering competitive rental plans to suit your budget. Reserve online or in advance to make your trip as smooth as possible.

Whether cruising along the shore or zooming through the city, rental bicycles are a great way to explore the islands. Bicycle share services like ChuraChari make pick up and drop off easy and convenient, and many services offer motor-assisted options in addition to conventional bicycles.

Taxis are a quick, convenient, and plentiful option when traveling in Okinawa’s urban areas. In addition to standard taxis, shuttle taxis can be chartered for transport between the airport and hotels, and sightseeing taxis offer a unique way to tour the area. Availability is limited on remote islands, so be sure to confirm in advance.

Okinawa’s main island is served by a convenient bus network that connects popular destinations. Options include local buses, airport services, and tour buses. While some remote islands also have bus services, the situation varies from island to island.

A vast network of ferries connects the many beautiful islands that make up Okinawa. Most major routes between islands offer express services, which can be cheaper than flights. Please note that weather conditions may impact services and travel time.

Flights operate from Naha Airport to many of Okinawa’s remote islands.They connect visitors with the Miyako and Yaeyama islands in the south, the Daito Islands in the east, and Kume Island in the west.

US military pier for Gaza costs $320 million, Pentagon says

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military’s initial cost of the temporary floating pier off Gaza’s coast is about $320 million, a Pentagon official said Monday.

“We’ve been very clear this is a temporary solution to help get humanitarian aid into Gaza. This is just one other way of getting aid in,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters.

The figure, first reported by Reuters , has not previously been disclosed about the operation that includes about 1,000 American troops.

The pier, known as Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore, or JLOTS, is meant to provide a new way to deliver badly needed aid into Gaza. The World Health Organization has warned some 2.3 million Gaza inhabitants face extreme hunger that could become a full-blown famine by next month as Israel continues its war against Hamas militants, who launched a surprise assault in October from the enclave.

President Joe Biden first announced the JLOTS operation on March 7 during his State of the Union speech. One day later, Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said the temporary pier would be operational within about 60 days.

Ryder, the Pentagon’s top spokesman, said Thursday U.S. ships have begun construction on the pier .

The Army last month sent four ships from the 7th Transportation Brigade at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., toward the Mediterranean to spearhead the operation. The Navy, in addition to the Benavidez, deployed two more ships to help in the construction of the pier . One of those ships, the USNS 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo was forced to return to the United States last week after suffering an engine room fire.

Ryder also confirmed there was a mortar attack in Gaza in the area where the pier will connect with the shore. But the strike, which happened Wednesday, caused “minimal damage.” U.S. forces were not impacted.

Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a statement Thursday referred to the mortar attack as “unfortunate but predictable.”

“This has been an ill-conceived mission from the start. President Biden should never have put our men and women in this position, and he should abandon this project immediately before any U.S. troops are injured,” Wicker said.

A senior military official, who spoke Thursday to reporters on the condition of anonymity, said the U.S. has “full confidence” in the plan developed with the Israelis in the last month.

Okinawa To Tokyo: What To Do When You Fly Into The Wrong Airport

I accidentally booked flights into one Tokyo airport and out of another. Here's what to do if you make the same mistake.

• Stay calm and assess the situation when faced with a travel mishap - panicking won't help you solve the issue.
• Book directly with airlines to have more control over your trip and get better assistance during unexpected situations.
• Have ride-share and airline apps downloaded before your trip to save time if you need to book transportation or re-book flights in a pinch.

I traveled from Paris, France, to Okinawa, Japan, connecting through Tokyo. Okinawa is a lovely tropical island , and it belongs on the adventurous traveler's radar. This was several years ago and a time when I wasn’t the savvy and seasoned traveler I am today. My biggest travel blooper is when I made plane reservations flying into one Tokyo airport and flying out of another Tokyo airport.

That’s right, there are two international airports in Tokyo, Japan, Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND). If you have a long layover in Japan , the Narita International Airport is almost it's own destination. I booked my tickets through Expedia—third-party booking sites are rarely a good idea, but I didn’t know that back then—and didn’t realize I was flying into Haneda and out of Narita until the day of travel.

It could have ended badly, but luckily there’s a bus service from Haneda to Narita and I had a long enough layover where I was able to make it work. It was a close call and remains one of the most nerve-wracking travel experiences in my memory bank.

Here’s what to do when you fly into the wrong airport.

P.S. There are lots of Japanese cities to explore that aren't Tokyo or Kyoto and the island of Okinawa is amazing. Don't let my ultimate travel mistake stop you from exploring!

7 Don't Panic

Losing your cool in a tense travel situation won't make it better.

When faced with a large-scale travel snafu (like not realizing you’re flying out of a different airport than the one you landed in) freaking out might come naturally, but try to curb the urge to go this route.

Panicking isn't going to help. To resolve this situation, you're going to have to make assessments, make decisions, and deal with other people, and getting upset isn’t conducive to any of those things. Sure, this is an inconvenient scenario and maybe an expensive disaster but losing one’s composure isn’t going to make it better.

There Are Some Japanese Foods That You Have To Try At Least Once, So Here They Are

6 don’t use a third-party booking site, booking direct with the airline means you'll get more help when travel doesn't go as planned.

Sometimes, travelers can get killer deals on flights or flights and hotel combos through third-party services like Expedia or Booking.com. I’m not knocking those services, but booking directly gives you more control over their experience and you’re more likely to pay close attention to what you’re booking.

If something goes wrong, like in my scenario, you want to be able to deal with the airline directly which you won’t be able to if your travel is booked through a third-party site.

What You Shouldn't Visit In Tokyo, Japan

5 understand the airports at your destination, knowing that a city has multiple airports can be a prompt to check those reservations extra carefully.

It's helpful to have a general idea of what cities have two major, or international airports in the back of your mind when booking flights. The list below isn’t all-encompassing, but it can help you navigate potential sticky situations when traveling.

And, if you book your own flight, you should get a notification from the airline that you're traveling through multiple airports, which could give you time to adjust before purchasing a ticket that will cause travel problems.

4 Download Ride-Share And Airline Apps

Make sure those handy travel apps are already on your phone before you leave home.

This is solid travel advice in general, but if things start going south while you’re on a trip and you need to book an Uber or chat with an airline representative, having the app already on your phone will save time, especially if you need to rely on Wi-Fi to download an app.

A ride share can get you from one airport to another within a city and the airline can help you re-book flights or find other solutions, if necessary. Often, customer service lines in the airport are long and I always recommend trying to contact the airline via phone or through its app, as you can sometimes get faster assistance.

Get in line for airline assistance and get on the app while in line. You never know what queue is going to move faster.

3 Ask The Airline For Help

If missing a flight is imminent, the airline can help you get re-booked.

If you book a flight into one city airport and need to connect to a different airport, you’re probably going to miss your flight unless you have a longer layover or other factors work in your favor, such as light traffic or a flight delay giving you some extra wiggle room.

If you need the airline to re-book you, you may have to explain what happened and you may have to pay an additional fee. There's no hard and fast rule on what airlines have to do in this type of situation, so the best thing to do is to explain your case and ask for help.

Since the airline isn’t at fault, they’re not required to re-book you at no cost. If traveling during peak season, space on the next flight may not be available, and you might find yourself stuck somewhere at your expense. This is a situation no one wants to encounter, so make sure you always have travel emergency funds available.

If you have less than 3 hours between flights, the odds of making it from Haneda to Narita (or vice-versa) in time to make your flights are very slim, especially if checking a bag.

It might be a small comfort, but airlines have probably heard every weird travel story on the planet. There are lots of reasons travelers miss flights , and although this one might not be one of the most common, airline employees have probably heard it all.

2 how to get from haneda to narita airports, there are options for traveling between airports—the fastest is the most expensive.

Although reading my cautionary tale and paying attention when booking travel can help avoid this level of travel blooper, it’s not difficult to get from Haneda to Narita, although it can be expensive and time-consuming. The two airports are about 50 miles apart. Here are options for getting from one place to the other:

Taking a cab is the fastest, but most expensive way to get from Haneda to Narita. Expect to pay $200 to $400. There’s a rail service between Haneda and Narita but only a limited number of trains connect directly. Expect to pay $12 to $20 and to handle your luggage through the crowds.

The best way to get from one place to the other (and what I did) is to take the Limousine Bus between the two airports. This takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours and costs around $40 for the one-way ride.

Uber is available in Japan but not as widely used as the U.S. Go is Japan’s taxi app.

The Safest Destinations In Southeast Asia (And The Most Dangerous)

1 be honest about your travel misadventures, sometimes, your travel mistakes are your best travel stories.

While you’re in the thick of things and trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B, it might be hard to see the humor or the value, but time and distance will provide that.

If you share your travel stories on social media, be transparent about what goes wrong. Talk to other travelers about your trip and alert them to situations like this, even if it seems like you did a colossally dumb thing that no one else would ever do.

One of the best parts about sharing travel stories is the opportunity to learn. And, you never know. Being open about what went wrong on your travels might help someone else avoid the same situation or make them a more confident traveler.
