Waldbühne 2023: The Berliner Philharmoniker with Andris Nelsons and Klaus Florian Vogt
Romantic opera: Weber, Wagner, Strauss
Klaus Florian Vogt — Tenor
Berliner Philharmoniker
Andris Nelsons — Conductor
Program notes
For decades the Berliner Philharmoniker have brought their season to a spectacular close at the Waldbühne, a gorgeous outdoor venue under the stars at Berlin's Olympiapark. In 2023 they continue this beloved tradition with a dreamy program devoted to Romantic opera , led in the festivities by world-renowned conductor Andris Nelsons and joined by top tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, a regular at the Met and the Bayreuth Festival who makes his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker here.
Alongside the fairytale world of Weber's Der Freischütz , our all-star cast treats us to excerpts from Wagner's Lohengrin — sung by Vogt, one of the finest Wagnerians of our day—and a lineup of favorites by Richard Strauss , including some of his most sublime Lieder and the orchestral suite from Der Rosenkavalier , outlining the opera's moments of utmost delicacy and thrilling turbulence as it evokes the splendor of 18th-century Vienna.

No Concert without a Female Composer!
»The hour has struck for woman’s work in the music world« – the prediction by the composer Ethel Smyth at the beginning of the 20 th century has not come true to this day. Sure, Fanny Hensel or Clara Schumann are no strangers. But what about Louise Farrenc, Lili Boulanger, Jessie Montgomery or Camille Pépin? The music of these great women composers is hardly known. Only two percent of all the works played in German orchestra programmes are even by women. That can’t go on like this. That is why we will not play a concert without a female composer in the 2023/2024 season! Get to know new worlds of sound with us, from the 12 th century to the present day. Music that you can hardly hear elsewhere. Music whose discovery is long overdue.
»There’s no right or wrong way to listen to or appreciate music. Just come with open ears and imagination.« (Anna Clyne, composer)

Symphony concerts with music director Robin Ticciati and distiguished guest conductors and soloists, three Casual Concerts, chamber concerts and much more – this is DSO's 2024/2025 season. Find more in the season brochure!
Concerts with Music Director Robin Ticciati
The DSO and Robin Ticciati will begin their seventh season together at the end of August. Great composers, fascinating compositions and exciting experiments are at the centre of the 2023/2024 season. The principal conductor will perform two legendary Ninth Symphonies at weekly intervals - Bruckner's Unfinished Symphony and Beethoven's Last Symphony, whose humanism the writer Navid Kermani will reflect on in concert from today's perspective.
Ticciati continues his Mahler cycle with the ›Lied von der Erde‹ and the Fifth Symphony. He celebrates a musical hymn to love with Wagner's ›Tristan und Isolde‹ and Berlioz's ›Roméo et Juliette‹, brings an absolute rarity to the stage with Busoni's monumental piano concerto with male choir, conducts Schumann and Ravel and finally presents a brilliant season finale with a Viennese programme in historical sound. Ticciati's concerts also include works by numerous female composers, such as Lili Boulanger, Charlotte Bray, Unsuk Chin, Helen Grime, Marianne von Martines, Elizabeth Ogonek, Camille Pépin and Ethel Smyth..

Concerts with Guest Conductors
Conductor Laureate Kent Nagano makes two guest appearances with the DSO, with music by Mahler and Vivaldi. Former principal conductor Ingo Metzmacher will perform Schubert's Great C Major Symphony, while his successor Tugan Sokhiev returns to his Berlin orchestra with Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto and Bruckner's ›Romantic‹ Symphony.
Many conductors who have been associated with the DSO for many years or who have recently impressed the orchestra will once again take the podium: Marin Alsop, Stéphane Denève, David Robertson and Andris Poga. The next generation is also well represented with Maxim Emelyanychev, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Tarmo Peltokoski, Dalia Stasevska, Ruth Reinhardt and Pekka Kuusisto. For the first time at the podium of the DSO, Václav Luks, Kazuki Yamada, Aivis Greters, Lee Reynolds and many more.

Emanuel Ax, Kirill Gerstein, Benjamin Grosvenor, Jan Lisiecki, Nikolai Lugansky, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, Lauma Skride and Daniil Trifonov are the masters of the keys.
On the violin, Renaud Capuçon, Vilde Frang, Vadim Gluzman, Alina Ibragimova and Frank Peter Zimmermann, on the cello Hayoung Choi, Alban Gerhardt and Anastasia Kobekina. The new concert format ➔ ›Music and Crime‹ , in collaboration with the successful podcast 'ZEIT Verbrechen', brings turbulent crime stories from the history of music live to the stage of the Großer Sendesaal in the Haus des Rundfunks on two dates - with Sabine Rückert, the deputy editor-in-chief and long-time crime reporter of DIE ZEIT, Andreas Sentker, the head of the knowledge department, and with chamber music ensembles of the DSO.
Also at the Haus des Rundfunks ➔ six rbbKultur children's concerts will take place, celebrating the 100th edition, as well as the opening and closing concert of the ➔ festival for new music ›Ultraschall Berlin‹ under the direction of Lin Liao and André de Ridder.

In the 2023/2024 season, the three Friday evenings at the Philharmonie will be hosted and conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, Robin Ticciati and David Robertson. Together with radioeins vom rbb, the following Casual Concert Lounge will feature live acts: singer-songwriter Anika, multi-instrumentalist and electro musician Perera Elsewhere, and Gudrun Gut, co-founder of ›Einstürzende Neubauten‹. Also in cooperation with radioeins, the DSO performs two concerts in the ›Schöne Töne Live‹ series with composer and presenter Sven Helbig, conductor Ralf Sochaczewsky and musical guests such as Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys in the Großer Sendesaal at the Haus des Rundfunks. Under the title ›DSO-Kiezkonzerte‹ , the DSO takes chamber music to Berlin's neighbourhoods on the second weekend in September. On Saturday, 9 September, ensembles will play in public squares, and the following day the DSO can be found between Urbanhafen and the East Side Gallery with a boat tour on the waters of Berlin.

Facts, figures and curiosities: The Asian tour in a nutshell
Tour of asia facts.
The members of the Berliner Philharmoniker are truly professional travelers. Since its inception, regular tours for guest performances at home and abroad have been part of the orchestra's DNA. But all of the tours have one thing in common: sophisticated planning and smooth logistics. We offer you a sneak peak behind the scenes right at the start of our tour, with some facts and figures.
Where exactly are we going?
We start our tour in Seoul, the impressive capital of South Korea. After two concerts at the Seoul Arts Center, we continue to Japan, more precisely to Takamatsu. From there we take the Shinkansen to Osaka, our starting point for the concerts in Nagoya and Himeji. Incidentally, this will be our first-ever trip to Himeji, and we are are already very excited about the beautiful, historic castle town.
At the end of our tour of Asia this year, we will spend another week in Tokyo - including a short detour to Kawasaki. The concerts in our second home, the Suntory Hall, will be complemented this year by a particularly exciting project: the “Be Phil Orchestra”. More on this soon!
On the music stands
In addition to some German-Austrian "classics", our musical tour baggage also includes lesser-known works such as Alban Berg's Three Orchestral Pieces. You can find out more about this work in our video introduction with Kirill Petrenko .
In Korea and Japan, we will alternate between two programmes:
Max Reger: Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart op. 132
Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben op. 40
Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 in G major op. 58 with Seong-Jin Cho, piano (only on November 12 in Seoul).
Watch the programme with Strauss’ Heldenleben in the Digital Concert Hall (recording from the season opening concert on 25 August 2023)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 29 in A major K. 201
Alban Berg: Three Orchestral Pieces op. 6 (revised version from 1929)
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor op. 98
The luggage
Every tour brings complicated logistics. We checked with our orchestra managers and the music library to find out what - apart from 133 orchestra members - is absolutely essential:
- 1 box just for sheet music: with two scores of each of the works performed and around 320 pieces of sheet music for the orchestra. For all those who want to count exactly, please note: the string players each share a music stand!
- A total of 150 dress coat and instrument boxes travel in trucks and on the plane
- That’s 112 cubic metres of luggage.
- By the way: the musicians themselves decide whether the smaller instruments go in their hand luggage.
You can find even more interesting facts and all the stories about our tour on Facebook , Instagram and Twitter!

2023 Europakonzert from Barcelona with Kirill Petrenko
In the richly detailed architecture of the Sagrada Família, Kirill Petrenko conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker’s 2023 Europakonzert. The fact that, as he says himself, he “always finds his approach to Mozart through opera”, was evident immediately: in Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, the motet “Exsultate, jubilate” and the Coronation Mass , he explored dramatic contrasts with the orchestra, a renowned quartet of soloists and the Barcelona-based choir Orfeó Català.
