ITB BERLIN CONVENTION: IN 2022 THE TOURISM INDUSTRY COULD ACHIEVE 80% OF PRE-PANDEMIC TURNOVER AND EXCEED IT IN 2024
A recovery in travel is on the horizon: 46% tourism growth is possible in 2022, the highest figure in years according to a report presented by itb berlin and statista q. it confirms also the status taken by domestic tourism, which remains more popular than travelling abroad..
During the first day of ITB Berlin Convention , ITB Berlin and Statista Q took a look at travel in 2022 and the future of the tourism industry. A significant improvement was already noticeable in 2021 with a 36% rise in growth compared with 2020. According to Statista’s Mobility Market Outlook (MMO), the industry achieved in 2021 a global turnover of around €260 billion. This year, the figure will probably exceed €353 billion, up by 46% -the highest growth rate in recent years.
Statista experts point however that a full recovery will not be achieved until 2024. This is the conclusion of Statista’s February 2022 Global Consumer Survey (GCS) which analyses answers of more than 2,000 interviewees.
Travellers want greater flexibility
Since the pandemic began, flexibility has become an absolute ’must’ in the tourism industry. Whereas in 2019 a majority of travellers in Germany took over three months to decide on an international trip, now 28% of tourists take one to three months, and less than 25% need less than four weeks even!
Compared with pre-pandemic levels, trip cancellation insurances have increased by almost 10%, while termination insurances have risen by 20%. The fact that customers want to be flexible is reflected in the use of online booking apps, which has grown by over 40% when compared with 2019.
German tourism destinations are attracting more and more young people
As a result of Covid-19, there has been a sharp rise in domestic tourism. According to DESTATIS, in June 2019 German visitors accounted for 84% of all overnights, while in both June 2020 and 2021, this number rocketed to 94%. While returning foreign tourists will lower this figure, the under-thirties are making a significant impact. This year, more than 38% of all travellers aged under 30 aim to travel in Germany, an increase of almost 25%. Overall, 72% of German travellers are planning a domestic trip over the next 12 months. In 2019 the figure stood at 39%. 12% mention sustainability as the reason for a domestic trip, while 37% say that a German holiday is as exciting as going abroad.
Smart accommodation, AI and recognition technology
More than half of all travellers claim to be interested in new technology on future trips. 21% of tourists from Germany, the USA and UK indicate their interested in smart home devices. Slightly fewer are interested in recognition technology, VR and AI-based personalised travel recommendations. The success of the startup The Hotels Network shows how important personalisation is. According to the business information platform Crunchbase, the company already received more than US$15 million in financing and says it is working with over 12,000 hotels worldwide. With the help of predictive personalisation through its own online channel, The Hotels Network wants to improve services and increase sales.
Workations are the new trend
Work is also a new reason to take holidays besides the usual motivation for travelling like family visits and sightseeing. This is the concept of working from anywhere, the idea of “workation”. Last summer Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, popularised the concept with a much-publicised email, stating that every employee was entitled to up to four weeks of workation. Since then the global volume of online searches has doubled. As a result a new type of customer has emerged, who with entirely new needs and a behaviour unlike that of business travellers is potentially creating a new market.
What does the war in Ukraine mean for international tourism?
According to UNWTO, in 2019 Ukraine and Russia’s combined expenditure of outbound tourism amounted to around 3.2% of the volume worldwide. Neighbouring Eastern European countries accounted for around 1.8% of the total. In 2019 spending worldwide topped around US$1.5 trillion. In 2019, Ukraine and Russia accounted for a combined 2.6% of a total of 1.5 billion international tourist arrivals, while their neighbours had a share of around 5.3%.

2023: Berlin tourism continue to rise
- A total of around 12.1 million visitors (+16%) and around 30 million overnight stays (+12%) in hotels
- Rise in share of international guests to 40 per cent. Great Britain, USA and the Netherlands rank among the top 3
- Berlin voted among the most popular cities in the world to travel to in 2024 as per surveys
Berlin, 23 February 2024 Berlin tourism sees a steady recovery: Around 12.1 million guests visited the German capital in the year 2023 and accounted for 29.6 million overnight stays. The figures were presented this morning by Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey together with Managing Director of visitBerlin Burkhard Kieker at a press conference on the Berlin TV tower. The number of guests jumped by 16 per cent and the number of overnight stays increased by twelve per cent. A total of 718 accommodation establishments were ready to welcome visitors.
Franziska Giffey , Mayor and Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises said: "2023 was a very successful year for Berlin's tourism and convention business. This positive trend is sure to continue. We are among the top cities in Europe alongside London and Paris, and Berlin was recently voted one of the most interesting destinations in the world alongside New York and Cape Town. With more than twelve million guests from all over the world and around 30 million overnight stays last year, the trend is quite obvious: Berlin is luring an ever growing number of tourists. The city's cosmopolitanism and tolerance, culture and creativity, neighbourhoods and metropolis, innovation and economic strength together with its commitment to urban tourism are the aces up our sleeve. This development is beneficial for our entire city and we will continue to systematically support the industry in order to secure important jobs and make Berlin one of the most attractive, innovative and sustainable cities in the world - in other words, a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lives."
Burkhard Kieker , Managing Director of visitBerlin , said: "Berlin is buzzing. We welcomed more international guests again in the year 2023. We are very pleased about the interest expressed by our Polish neighbours. The whole city benefits from this success, especially the culture, tourism and event industry. This is not a simple matter of course, rather it is the culmination of close cooperation between all players in the industry."
Overnight stays by international guests, especially from the UK, the USA and the Netherlands In the year 2023, the share of international overnight stays exceeded 40 per cent for the first time since 2019. In addition to Germany, the most important source markets were once again the UK (1.3 million overnight stays, +35%), the US overseas market (1.2 million overnight stays, +19%), the Netherlands (843,000 overnight stays, +10%), Spain (643,000 overnight stays, +10%) and Italy (637,000 overnight stays, +23%). Polish guests also travelled more to Berlin (607,000 overnight stays, +30%).
The tourism and event industry reaps the benefits The local leisure and cultural sector also enjoyed stable growth in the number of visitors. Tourist attractions were delighted to see a four per cent increase in visitors as compared to the previous year. The number of visitors to museums and memorials rose by 22 per cent. Theatres recorded an increase in visitors of 19 per cent and sightseeing providers had 17 per cent more guests. This data is based on the visitBerlin market research tool " Visitor Insight ".
Berlin ranks among the world's best destinations for city breaks Berlin's appeal shines through in an international comparison: In the current "Best cities in the world 2024" ranking, Berlin is one of the three most interesting cities in the world, along with New York and Cape Town, according to TimeOut-Magazine . In the European City Travel Study 2023/2024 by ProjectM , in which 6,000 city travellers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland were surveyed, Berlin is placed first and, together with Paris, is one of the top city travel destinations in a comparison of 170 cities in Europe.
Highlights for 2024: European Football Championships, 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, 100th anniversary of IFA Berlin is hosting several high-profile events in the year 2024. In summer, Berlin will celebrate a giant football and cultural festival: The Olympic Stadium will host five matches and the final of the 2024 European Football Championships. Thanks to the fan zone at the Brandenburg Gate, even those who do not have a ticket for the Olympic Stadium can enjoy the big public viewing event. This September, the IFA celebrates its 100th anniversary. Autumn of 2024 will be dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Berlin is also looking forward to several other anniversaries, such as the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Lights, the 50th Berlin Marathon and 55 years of the Berlin TV Tower.
Important congresses for 2024 The congress business is also booming: Numerous congresses are on the agenda in 2024, especially in the fields of medicine and science. Among them we have the EHRA Heart Congress in April (European Heart Rhythm Association, 7-9 April, with 5,000 participants), the Annual Breast Cancer Congress in May (ESMO Breast Cancer 2024, 15-17 May, with over 4,000 participants), the World Health Summit in October (13-15 October, with over 3,000 participants in Berlin) and the German Nursing Day in November (7-8 November, with 3,500 participants). ITB Berlin 2023
Written By Matteo Falferi
ITB Berlin 2023 - A Year of Tourism Excellence
Monday the 6th marked the beginning of four exciting and intense days for the travel and tourism industry. ITB Berlin 2023 (Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin) represents one of the most important and accredited international events concerning international tourism. Exhibitors such as air and cruise lines, resorts, hotels and tour operators will be meeting and joining efforts in sculpting the tourism industry and all its related fields for the coming year. The main keyword at ITB Berlin 2023 is " change ", expressed in all its infinite facets.
The Opening Ceremony - Georgia takes the Stage
The Opening Ceremony of the ITB Berlin 2023 was held at the CityCube on the 6th of March and it set the flow for this polarizing convention. Georgia was this year's hosting country and it truly delivered, with some very high profile representatives and all the beauty of its rich history, culture and nature. Georgia's Vice Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili personally cut the ribbon, promising an impressive journey throughout Georgia under the theme of " Infinite Georgian culture - from the beginnings of viniculture to modern avant-garde art ".
Zurab Pololikashvili , Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is another prominent Georgian personality who encouraged attendance and is working to promote the country's emerging tourism industry. The opening speeches were followed by an ensemble of Georgian music, traditional ballet and polyphonic singing, for a taste of the country's artistic and cultural heritage.
A Spotlight on Georgia
Through its role as hosting country for IBT 2023, Georgia aims to showcase to the world the infinite variety of experiences it can provide. Recently confirmed once again as one of the birthplaces of wine, this country holds a long and resilient cultural tradition that can fascinate any traveller.
Georgia is approaching the end date of a visionary 10-years National Tourism Strategy plan signed back in 2015. The project looked to accomplish strategic unprecedented results in the country's tourism industry. Among the plan's tenets, the first one set to "protect and improve Georgia's natural and cultural heritage", laying down a path to a sustainable tourism development, mindful of the communities and natural environments dotting this land between continents.
Early data had already confirmed the first positive results of this plan, and though affected by the recent Covid-19 pandemic, like most other countries, the future looks bright for Georgian tourism.
A World of Exhibits
The beauty behind ITB Berlin lies in the myriad of exhibits, themes and scenarios explored and presented during the annual conference. Over 10.000 exhibitors worked jointly to draw out the fine lines of tourism industry for the coming year. A few of the themes presented include:
Gender Equality: Tourism as a door for female empowerment.
A panel dedicated to exploring the relationship between the tourism industry and gender equality. The importance of tourism as a tool to remove societal and economical barriers around women all over the world. The speaking commission included talented and succesful women ready to share their opinions and experiences.
Augmented Reality: Potential, Upsell and Opportunities
In a world where reality is constantly augmented by the virtual world, experiences could be enriched and empowered by the additional resources of the digital. A future of tourism where you are the center of the action as history and nature unfold around you.
The Label Jungle - Sustainable Tourism
With both travellers and service providers expressing growing interest in a sustainable approach to tourism, the industry seems to promote the idea of a low-impact development, mindful of local nature and communities. Navigating among the different labels however can be complicated. This panel helped visitors to understand credited certificates for climate neutrality and compensation programmes.

Cyprus tourism minister leading delegation at Berlin tourism conference
D eputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis will be undertaking significant diplomatic engagements in Berlin as he leads the Cypriot delegation at the renowned ITB Berlin tourism exhibition, according to an announcement released on Tuesday.
The announcement, published by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, noted that during his visit to Germany, Koumis has scheduled political meetings with tourism ministers from Greece, Israel, and Malta.
These meetings, the announcement explained, “aim to foster collaborative efforts and strengthen ties in the tourism sector between Cyprus and these nations”.
Moreover, Koumis is also set to hold discussions with the heads of tourism organisations and airlines operating tourist programmes and routes from Germany to Cyprus.
In addition, he will engage with other key partners headquartered in Germany who predominantly operate routes from other markets.
The ministry also mentioned that the Cypriot pavilion at ITB Berlin spans 350 square metres, featuring participation from around 50 Cypriot tourism companies and collaborators.
Meanwhile, ITB Berlin, which is taking place from 5 to 7 March 2024 on the Berliner Exhibition Grounds, this week reported excellent bookings, amounting to a total of 150,000 square metres, equivalent to over 90 per cent of the display area.
The event’s organisers said that at 87 per cent, international participation in the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show is at a record high.
Mario Tobias, CEO of Messe Berlin, said that “ITB Berlin is the meeting place for the tourism industry’s entire value chain, once again underlining its global importance as a leading international trade show”.
“The outstanding quality of our senior buyers and excellent bookings reflect upbeat travel demand,” he added.
Moreover, Tobias said that “once again, ITB Berlin is cementing its position as a global expert forum and hub for innovations and trends”.
The Messe Berlin CEO stated that despite rising travel demand, the industry also faces many challenges such as climate change, an energy crisis, the introduction and rise of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as skills shortages.
“They can only be overcome together,” Tobias said.
“That is why it is so important for us to gather all the actors in Berlin so we can benefit from mutual inspiration, learn from each other and work on solutions together,” he concluded.

Press Release
Itb berlin convention 2022 begins: orientation and dialogue on the most pressing topics of our times.
Day one kicks off a series of formats over the coming months – High-level exchange of views among experts – The war in Ukraine, the pandemic and the key topics of resilience, digitalisation and sustainability are the dominant convention themes – ITB Minister's Keynote with Dr. Robert Habeck – Comprehensive programme of events with 223 speakers and 102 sessions – Georgia is the official cultural destination – Digital Business Day on 17 March – New series of B2B networking events in 2022
The trade show opens in challenging times: the world has already experienced two years of the coronavirus pandemic – now the terrible war in Ukraine is overshadowing global events. Since its launch in 1966, ITB Berlin has provided an important platform for international travel industry, and together with tourism it stands for international understanding among cultures and for peace. With the opening of the virtual ITB Berlin Convention, which will take place online from Tuesday, 8 March to Thursday, 10 March, the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show is launching a new event concept. Over the next three days, high-ranking experts will examine the most pressing topics of the global tourism industry from every perspective. The focus is on the pandemic and its impact as well as the challenges of geopolitical conflicts and crises. The convention will be live-streamed from the Messe Berlin studio at itb.com . Attendance is free. To register please visit itb.com/ticketshop .
The opening press conference moderated by Katie Gallus will kick off events on 8 March at 9 a.m. Joining her will be Martin Ecknig, CEO of Messe Berlin , H.E. Prof. Dr. Levan Izoria, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Georgia to Germany , who represents this year’s Convention & Culture Partner Georgia , Peter Kautz, MD of Statista Q , and Norbert Fiebig in his role as president of the German Travel Association (DRV) . Over the three days of the convention the focus on Tuesday is on the pressing topics of resilience and the future, on Wednesday the topic is digitalisation, and on Thursday sustainability. In a total of 102 panels, lectures, presentations, exhibitors’ press conferences and discussions, 223 leading experts and companies will assess the global challenges facing the travel industry. On 8 March at 11 a.m., Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Dr. Robert Habeck will hold this year’s ITB Minister's Keynote speech.
“About two years after the pandemic began it seems it may finally be coming to an end“, said Martin Ecknig, CEO of Messe Berlin . “However, the world is making an almost seamless transition to another global conflict, whose consequences we can only vaguely imagine at the moment. What is clear however, is that we live in a world of constant change. As a firmly established member of the tourism industry and against the backdrop of all the challenges and uncertainty, with ITB Berlin we are least able to offer the industry some orientation and a corresponding space for dialogue.”
Tour operators, destinations and suppliers can make use of a further streaming channel to present more fascinating content at press conferences and product presentations. Events will range from destination presentations, specialist discussions to award presentations. More programme details can be found in the exhibitor presentation and press conference section at itb.com/convention .
Georgia’s wide-ranging cultural heritage and natural attractions
In 2022 Georgia is the Convention & Culture Partner at ITB Berlin, and next year it will introduce itself to a wider audience as the official Host Country of the Leading Travel Trade Show. This is another phase in the three-year partnership with ITB Berlin. Thus, together with David Ruetz, head of ITB Berlin, Mariam Kvrivishvili, MP, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Georgia, will open the ITB Berlin Convention. Last year, Georgia already fascinated visitors as the Adventure & Sustainability Partner of ITB Berlin. The republic has a population of 3.7 million and is popular with visitors due to a wealth of cultural attractions, the variety of architectural styles in the capital Tbilisi, mountain ranges, hillside monasteries, beaches on the Black Sea and the ancient winegrowing region of Kakheti.
Networking and business at the Digital Business Day on 17 March
ITB Berlin 2022 will by no means be over after the three-day convention, which will be followed by the Digital Business Day on 17 March. As a networking platform, this offers one-on-one networking opportunities, audio-video meetings, information on global travel trends and forecasts, as well as on-demand corporate news and automated speed-dating. The virtual format is a catalyst for business networks and focuses on business and networking. It also offers companies numerous opportunities for sponsoring the virtual format. The event will be augmented by the IPK World Monitor with global travel trends and forecasts for 2022 as well as company presentations, which are available via the on-demand programme. Tickets to the Digital Business Day are available at itb.com/ticketshop .
IPK International: Global Outbound Travel 2021 & Roadmap for 2022
At the Digital Business Day on 17 March , taking the findings of the latest World Travel Monitor® survey of more than 60 countries around the world, Rolf Freitag, CEO of IPK International , will report on the year in travel in 2021. How did international travel fare globally in year two of the pandemic? Which travel and holiday markets are already witnessing a recovery? In addition, Rolf Freitag will also talk about people’s current desire to travel. What are the chances of the tide turning in 2022? Which destinations will be particularly in demand over the coming months? And what types of holiday will be most popular this year? The World Travel Monitor® is the world’s most comprehensive survey on outbound travel trends in Europe, Asia, North, South and Central America. With its surveys, it covers more than 90 per cent of the global demand for international travel.
ITB – 365 days a year
In addition to its virtual formats, in 2022 ITB Berlin is bringing the industry together with a series of B2B networking events in European markets. These will provide numerous networking opportunities, fixed dates in the form of a Speed Networking event, as well as workshops presenting and discussing the latest travel industry topics.

About ITB Berlin and the ITB Berlin Convention

A series of B2B networking events which ITB Berlin is planning at European host destinations this year will round off the concept. 3,513 exhibitors from 120 countries were represented at the virtual edition of ITB Berlin NOW 2021 for the duration of the event.
