Where is Kealakekua Bay?

Kealakekua Bay is a Marine Life Conservation District located on the west side of Hawaii’s Big Island, 17 miles south of Kailua-Kona. Marine Life Conservation Districts are unique to Hawaii with only 11 located around the islands. As Hawaii’s beaches grew in popularity it quickly became clear that tourism was beginning to affect the health of both reefs and marine animals. 

These designated areas protect Hawaii’s diverse fish populations, along with other endangered marine life, ensuring that they continue to thrive for decades to come. The first was created in 1967 and more sites are being considered every year. 

Aside from the bay itself, Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park wraps around the bay, encompassing the land and rocky shoreline and includes the Captain Cook Monument. This area is steeped in history.

Is Kealakekua Bay Good For Snorkeling?

Not only is Kealakekua Bay good for snorkeling, it’s one of the best snorkeling spots on the Big Island! The reef system that surrounds the Captain Cook Monument in particular is an incredible area for snorkelers and offers up calm waters, remnants of lava frozen underwater, a vast array of colorful fish (some that can only be found here), and thriving reefs. 

Spinner dolphins are also frequently sighted in Kealakekua Bay. History buffs might also be interested in the burial caves of Hawaiian chiefs along with the bay ties to the infamous Captain Cook, hence the monument located at the western end of the bay.

How Do You Snorkel in Kealakekua Bay?

There are numerous ways to snorkel around Kealakekua Bay including hopping on a boat tour, renting kayaks, or simply by hiking in. 

Various boat tours are available to book, each with something different to offer whether they’re small groups or large catamarans. Boat tours are a great option because they take the planning out of the equation, offering meals and equipment without the hassle of trying to figure it all out on your own. 

Renting kayaks and doing a DIY tour out to the Captain Cook Monument is another option for those who want some freedom in their itinerary and don’t mind a no-frills experience. If going it alone isn’t your cup of tea, there are also kayaking tours that you can join, including glass-bottom kayaks that offer a window into the ocean below!

Hiking is an alternative option although it isn’t a walk in the park. The Ka’awaloa Trail is fairly strenuous as it’s just shy of 4 miles long round-trip and steep. It becomes especially challenging in the heat! Be sure to keep in mind that while it might seem like a breeze on the way down to the bay, the trail is all uphill on the hike back. Many hikers opt to wear sturdy hiking boots down to the beach due to the rocky nature of the trail.

Is it Worth Going on a Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour?

Yes! We think so. Given the length of the hike, we prefer to skip that and save our energy for enjoying this marine life conservation district from the water. We’ve made some incredible memories and had some of the most unforgettable experiences here. From seeing spinner dolphins swimming close to us on a kayaking tour to spotting both a shark and an eel on our rafting tour. After snorkeling in countless places around Hawaii, we can say that this area has given us some of our best snorkeling experiences!

1. Best Small Group Boat Tour (+ a great price!)

Small group size, awesome history, and a wonderful price point make this tour with Hawaii Oceanic a no-brainer if you aren’t worried about frills but still want a great experience. Take off from Keauhou Harbor in a 27’ Force Marine powerboat, headed straight for Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument.

You’ll have a solid one and a half hours to snorkel along the bay, taking in the colorful fish and abundant marine life. Along the way, humpback whales (seasonal) and spinner dolphins are likely to make an appearance. You’ll also learn fun facts about the local history including Captain Cook and the nearby burial grounds of Hawaiian chiefs. 

This tour does have some shaded areas onboard the boat. Ride-alongs are welcome with a minimum age of 5 years old. This is not a tour for beginner swimmers and snorkelers need to be able to swim at least 25 yards comfortably. Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are included!

Prices are $99 per person (at time of publishing), regardless of age. 

2. Best Catamaran Tour

Hop on board the spacious 50’ catamaran for a cruise with Sea Paradise down the Kona Coast to the idyllic Kealakekua Bay. You’ll get a little history lesson about the area’s storied past while gliding comfortably along the water for 45 minutes before you reach your destination. Keep your eyes peeled for spinner dolphins along the bow or whales off in the distance in the winter months.

They offer two tours, the morning option which is 4.5 hours, and the afternoon tour which runs for 3 hours. Morning tours also include lunch and non-alcoholic drinks while the afternoon tour provides appetizers (also known as pupus) and non-alcoholic beverages. A cash bar opens up for 1 hour on the ride home for both tours. Of the two, we generally prefer the morning tour because it’s longer and there’s a better chance for good visibility before the tradewinds kick up.

This is a comfy ride with bathrooms on board and shade in the galley. For those who are prone to seasickness, catamarans can be a great option as they provide a more stable ride than monohull boats. You’ll still want to take seasickness medication as directed just in case. 

Luckily, all ages are welcome on this tour. Beginner snorkelers are also welcome and staff are happy to assist with additional tips and floatation devices.

Prices vary depending on which tour you book. Morning tours are a bit pricier at $165 for adults, $110 for children (6-12 years old), and $55 for toddlers (4 and under). Afternoon tours are $125 for adults, $75 for children (6-12 years old), and $45 for toddlers (4 and under). Prices are accurate at the time of publishing.

3. Best Large Boat Tour

If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience that pulls out all the stops, this twice-daily tour with Fair Winds is it! Leaving Keauhou Bay, guests will set sail on board a large boat with two waterslides and a high dive to enjoy once they reach their destination. The boat makes its way to Kealakekua Bay where it puts down anchor for over an hour of beautiful snorkeling. 

As you make your way to the Captain Cook Monument, watch for spinner dolphins in the distance and manta rays who come to this area for its cleaning stations. Reef-safe sunscreen and flotation devices are provided onboard. Most of the boat is covered in shade and there are two bathrooms available.

A fully plant-based (vegan) menu ensures that they stay true to their eco-friendly offerings with breakfast and lunch provided on the morning tour, while on the afternoon tour you’ll enjoy snacks and a full bar.

If you’re wary about a plant-based meal, don’t fret! Their breakfast menu includes banana bread, fresh fruit, Kona coffee, and overnight oats while the afternoon tour can look forward to BBQ jackfruit (akin to pulled pork) or chickpea sliders (similar to tuna salad), sweet potato chips, both potato salad and green salads, homemade pickles, and cookies.

The timing of both tours is great as it ensures that guests make it back just after lunch for more exploring or right before dinner. Ride-alongs are warmly welcomed. This is a tour for all ages. 

Morning tour prices are $177 for adults, $110 for children (ages 4-12), and $45 for toddlers (ages 0-3). Afternoon tours are around $129 for adults, $78 for children (ages 4-12), and $29 for toddlers (ages 0-3). 4. Best Raft Tour

We can’t deny, this might be one of our favorite snorkeling experiences! These tours are a real-deal adventure onboard Captain Zodiac’s Power Raft . You’ll leave from Kona Marina ( click for directions ) which offers a bit of a different perspective from other tours with a few interesting historic pitstops along the way. Zoom your way through the water to Kealakekua Bay where visitors can snorkel to their heart’s content. You might even spot a moray eel like we did! Check out Jordan’s experience in the video below!

Aside from snorkeling, you’ll also get a nice little geology lesson and a sneak peek inside sea caves and lava tubes on your ride back to the harbor. This additional sightseeing is thanks to the power rafts nimble ability to explore the nooks and crannies of the coast, something that larger boats simply can’t do. 

Two different tours are offered on a daily basis, the “Beat the Crowd Tour” and the “Morning Tour”. We prefer the “Beat the Crowd Tour” because it includes a deli lunch and is a bit longer at five hours versus four hours.

High-quality snorkeling gear and floatation devices are provided, which can help you avoid touching the reef! Keep in mind that there is no shade or bathrooms on this tour which might be a dealbreaker for some visitors..

The “Beat the Crowd Tour” is $155 per adult and $120 for children (ages 4-12). Prices were accurate as of the time of publishing.

5. Best Kayak Tour

For those interested in being right on the water – and getting a bit of a workout in – kayaking out to Kealakekua Bay is a wonderful experience! Grab a partner and head out on this double-kayak adventure to the Captain Cook Monument. 

After a beautiful and relaxed kayak across the bay, you’ll make a dry landing near the Captain Cook Monument itself. Spend your time exploring the monument on foot (fun fact: most boat tours can’t do this!) and in the water, swimming with hundreds of colorful tropical fish, eels, sea turtles, and maybe the odd shark or two. Spinner dolphins are frequently sighted along the paddle out to Kealakekua Bay and even whales in winter.  

This tour is a great mixture of kayaking and snorkeling with about 1.5 hours of both. Although you can DIY this kayak tour (which we have done) it’s also nice to have guides around to lead the way, add in some local history, and provide all of your gear. 

Another element that some visitors might not consider is state landing permits which are provided by most kayak companies. If you don’t happen to have these, you’ll have to re-enter your kayak from deep water or pull it behind you while you’re snorkeling.

Plenty of drinks and snacks are included. Private charters are also on offer and affordable for those who want a more personalized experience. Recommended ages for this tour are from 7 to 67. Beginners are more than welcome to join!

We’ve been out to Kealakekua Bay countless times and always have a blast. To make the most out of your experience, we have a few tips for Captain Cook Snorkeling tours!

What should you bring on a Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour?

So, what should you pack for a Captain Cook snorkeling tour? It depends on which kind of tour you’re taking. 

Boat tours often supply guests with everything from towels to sunscreen and meals, including drinks. At the bare minimum, you should bring along mineral-based sunscreen (to protect the delicate reefs!), sunglasses, protective sun clothing, and a beach towel, just in case. If you’ll be snorkeling or hiking you’ll want to add plenty of water and maybe a few snacks to your bag. 

It’s also a great idea to bring your camera, especially if you have a GoPro, for snapping underwater pictures and videos! Some of the best snorkeling footage we’ve ever gotten was at Kealakekua Bay.

If you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to opt for a tour on a larger boat and remember to take motion sickness medication prior to boarding.

What is included on the Captain Cook Snorkeling Tours?

Most Captain Cook snorkeling tours will include all of the snorkeling gear you’ll need and typically snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, although some tours also offer full meals. 

What’s the best time of day to go on a Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour?

While there’s technically no “best time” for snorkeling, we prefer to head out in the morning, before the trade winds start to pick up and cause the water to get more choppy. This is also a better time to be outside in terms of sun exposure and gives you a chance to beat the heavier afternoon crowds. 

Give the spinner dolphins space

One of the most exciting moments on a Captain Cook snorkeling tour is spotting the spinner dolphins! Spinner dolphins often hang out in Kealakakua Bay to rest after fishing in deep waters off the coast and for essential activities like mating. 

Remember to keep your distance from the spinner dolphins, staying at least 50 yards away from them at all times! This isn’t just a suggestion but the law .

First, to beat the heat. It can get HOT in the afternoons. And while it might sound refreshing to be in the water during the heat of the day, your skin will not be so refreshed with sun rays beating down on your back, giving you a one-sided burn.

Second, to beat the crowds. If you can be one of the first boats out in the morning there will be less boat traffic because there won’t be the crossing of tours ending as new ones come in. Less crowds means less bumping into fellow snorkelers.

And third, if you are touring during whale season you’ll have a higher chance of spotting whales on your way to or from snorkeling earlier in the morning, thus potentially saving you money from taking a separate whale tour.

What Should I Bring on a Captain Cook Snorkel Tour?

Items you’ll need to bring on a Captain Cook snorkel tour are pretty straight forward :

Swimsuit – a most obvious item, or whatever you choose to swim in

Light sweatshirt – it can get a little chilly on the water some days, especially on overcast or rainy days. If you can, bring a light sweatshirt or long sleeve shirt just in case.

Towel – for sitting on while in the boat, to dry off if you don’t want the sun to evaporate the water for you, or for keeping warm if it happens to be a chillier day; I like Sandcloud towels because they pack light and dry well.

Reef Safe Sunscreen – spending hours on a boat with sunlight reflecting off the water and snorkeling with your back exposed to sun rays is a recipe for lobster skin. Find a reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the coral reefs and not pollute the waters. Kokua Sun Care sunscreen is a highly rated, Hawaiian-made option.

Waterproof Pouch for Camera – if you want to take pictures of all the underwater life you’ll see, get a good waterproof case for your phone . Also make sure it has a strap or way of keeping you attached to it so if it slips from your hands it doesn’t sink to Davy Jones’ locker.

GoPro – I wore a waterproof GoPro to video record my swimming adventure. It was nice to be able to just turn it on and forget about it as I swam around the bay. There are different ways of attaching it to your body like headband, chest strap, or hand floaty . Some tours will offer a GoPro rental.

Bag – pack all your items in a bag to keep it consolidated, safe, and in one spot. Ideally use a water resistant/proof bag and not a cloth canvas bag that will soak up boat water and get your belongings inside wet .

Motion sickness preventives – for those prone to seasickness, like me, be proactive by taking Dramamine or wearing wrist cuffs or patches .

Things to think twice about bringing on the boat:

Jewelry – if you are wearing special rings, necklaces, bracelets, or any other form of adornment you might want to consider leaving them in the hotel room. Rings can easily slip off of wet fingers. Necklaces or bracelets could get caught on snorkel gear or boat things and get torn off. You aren’t dressing up for the fishes, they don’t care about your bling, so if you don’t want to risk losing a treasured item, take them off before the tour.

Sunglasses – sunglasses are important for protecting your eyes from the sun but if you don’t have a case to put them in they will most likely be thrown in your bag and risk getting scratched up or broken.

Hats – hats are also a good item for protection from the sun but can easily get blown off in the ocean wind or boat speed wind. So be prepared to either be holding on to your heads while on the boat or maybe bring a hat you don’t mind losing if it does end up yeeting itself to sea.

Who Should Not Go on a Captain Cook Snorkel Tour?

While snorkeling is a pretty easy water activity, there are still precautions some people should make before booking a tour.

Some boat rides are not recommended for pregnant women who are advanced in their pregnancy. Be sure to choose a boat tour that is not too rough.

People with recent back or neck problems or injuries should not participate. That goes for those with heart problems or any other serious medical conditions as well.

You should be in moderate physical fitness as there will be climbing in and out of boats and swimming in open water for an extended amount of time. 

Tour boats are not wheelchair accessible.

Every tour has an age minimum. Some allow infants to ride in the boat and allow kids as young as 4 years old to snorkel. Talk with the company to see what their policies are. 

What is So Special about Kealakekua Bay?

Kealakekua Bay is a 315-acre Marine Life Conservation District with about 180-acres designated as a State Historic Park along the Kona coast. Snorkeling is allowed but because it’s protected, fishing is kapu, forbidden. Boating vessels from catamarans to single kayaks need a permit to sail these waters as well.

Hawaiian spinner dolphins spend a lot of time in the Bay to not only rest and feed but mothers also use it as a nursery for their calves. I thought it was so cool watching them frolic and play!

The combination of crystal clear, calm waters with extensive coral reefs and sea life bring people from all over the world for some of the best snorkeling and diving in Hawaii .

Besides the beautiful underwater nature, Kealakekua Bay has strong historical significance. Hawaiian ali’i, or royalty, are said to be buried in the cliff walls. A human sacrifice heiau, or temple, resides on the south end of the Bay. Also, this is where Captain James Cook first landed on the Big Island in 1779. 

At the time of his arrival, the Hawaiians were celebrating a harvest festival for their god, Lono.

When Captain Cook landed, some say the Hawaiians believed him to be the returning god. Captain Cook and his crew were celebrated and well taken care of during the festival. But after three weeks of living together both the crew and the Hawaiians had grown to dislike each other and it was time for Captain Cook to continue on his world journey.

Captain Cook got out to sea, but after a week his ship ran into a storm that broke his mast. With nowhere else to go, he returned to Hawaii to fix it.

From here the course of events get muddled but there were altercations between Captain Cook, his crew, and the Hawaiians. Lifeboats were stolen, the Hawaiian chief was taken hostage, and miscommunications all resulted in Captain Cook getting shot and dying at Kealakekua Bay.

The Captain Cook Monument is a white obelisk that sits near the shore marking the spot where he died. Technically it sits on British ground.

Our day starts early in the morning when we gear up and get ready to slip into the warm waters off the Kona Coast. We move along the coast to the secluded and pristine marine sanctuary of Kealakekua Bay for some snorkeling fun. Kealakekua Bay is a marine sanctuary and home to the Captain Cook Monument. It is also widely considered to be one of the top snorkeling destinations in the world.

We set out on an exhilarating cruise along the Kona coast, keeping a watchful eye out for the protected Hawaiian spinner dolphins in their natural habitat as they head to protective coves and bays to rest after a long night of hunting. What is the best time of day for a captain cook snorkel tour.

Weather is unpredictable, so all you can do is go based on past experience!

Usually, mornings offer the calmest seas in Hawaii. Although Kealakekua Bay is relatively protected from swells, expect choppier conditions en route as the day wears on.

Early mornings are also less crowded at this very popular snorkeling spot.

That being said, you should see lots of fish and coral no matter what time of day you choose to go.

What is the best time of year for a Captain Cook snorkel tour?

Captain Cook snorkeling tours operate year round, based on weather conditions on the day.

Typically, ocean swells on the Kona Coast tend to be rougher in the winter months, but Kealakekua Bay is usually sheltered.

So you could go any time of the year and have a great snorkeling experience at the Captain Cook Monument.

On winter trips, you may see humpback whales as you travel from Kailua-Kona to the Captain Cook Monument or on your way back.

Should I choose a catamaran tour or a small boat tour?

That depends somewhat on your personal preference and your appetite for adventure.

Larger catamarans offer greater stability, so if you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to consider a larger boat.

Smaller speedboats or zodiac boats zip through the water, and the ride may be choppier. On the other hand, smaller boats mean a smaller group and a more personalized experience.

Smaller boats also have better ability to maneuver and close in on the action.

What should I wear / bring for my Captain Cook snorkeling tour?

Wear your swimsuit under your clothes, of course, bring a light absorbent towel, and lots of reef-safe sunscreen.

• Underwater Camera : Want to capture Hawaii’s incredible underwater seascape and marine life? Your best budget option is the Fujifilm QuickSnap Waterproof Disposable Camera , reasonably cheap with good underwater photos! If you want high-end photos and video, you must invest in the premium GoPro HERO12 – Waterproof Action Camera , (waterproof to 33 feet)!
• Inflatable Life Jackets : If you’re planning paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports, and prefer your own life jacket, consider one of these two US Coast Guard approved options: the Onyx M-16 Series Belt Back Manual Inflatable Life Jacket or the Onyx A/M-24 Automatic/Manual Inflatable Life Jacket .
• Water Shoes : Some of Hawaii’s beaches have sharp lava rocks or coral reefs, good water shoes will protect your feet (but please do not walk on the reef!). Where to Stay on the Big Island

Kailua-Kona, on the sunnier leeward side of the Big Island, ands Hilo, on the lush windward side, are the main bases on Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island. Most visitors to the Big Island split their stay between these two places.

You will find the biggest choice of hotels and resorts in Kailua-Kona and Waikaloa, with both chains and boutiques, while Hilo has fewer hotels and inns.

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is an excellent choice if you are looking for a pristine beach out the front door. The Hilton Waikaloa Village is a great choice if you are traveling as a family.

Kealakekua Bay has a contentious place in contemporary Hawaiian history. Captain Cook Monument was erected where its namesake, Captain James Cook, was killed in 1779. About The Tour

Our boat, Manta Raiv, provides an intimate experience for a maximum of 14 passengers on the Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour. With this small-group experience, you’ll soak up the snorkeling goodness with maximum comfort.

The boat ride from Honokohau Harbor to Kealakekua Bay takes up to 45 minutes, depending on conditions. As we travel south along the Kona Coast, your US Coast Guard certified captain and crew will educate you with historical facts about the surrounding areas. Upon reaching the snorkel site at Kealakekua Bay, you’ll spend a maximum of one hour in the water before returning to the boat.

The Captain Cook Snorkeling Tour comes with everything you need to snorkel, including a high-quality mask, snorkel, and fins. 1. Why should I book this tour?

The Fair Wind II is perfect for snorkeling, sightseeing, and enjoying the calm, cerulean blue waters of historic Kealakekua Bay, where the Captain Cook Monument is located. The boat has fun water activities including boogie boards with windows, custom view-boxes, and inner tubes. Plus two 15-ft waterslides and a high-jump platform.

2. What’s the difference between snorkeling in the morning versus the afternoon?

The morning cruise includes breakfast and lunch and gives you an extra 1-hour of snorkel time. Snorkel conditions are very similar, however, it is more likely to have clear skies in the morning. Afternoons in Kealakekua Bay are generally absent from other tour boat operators, proving a less crowded experience.

3. When is Whale Watching Season in Hawaii?

The best opportunity to see whales is between late December and late March when the Humpback Whales migrate to Hawaii from Alaska. You may have the chance to see whales during your cruise if you are coming to Hawaii during wintertime.

• The parking lot for Fair Wind Cruises is located at 78-7106 Kamehameha III Road, Kailua Kona, HI 96740.

Location, direction and description

• After parking, you will need to walk down to the office, which is conveniently located next to the main pier of Keauhou Bay (78-7130 Kaleiopapa Street in Kailua-Kona, HI 96740).

Important activity information

Restrictions.

• Children of all ages can participate in this activity.
• This activity is not wheelchair accessible.
• Due to the nature of the boats being tied to the dock, rocking back and forth with the movement of the water and a series of about 4 stair steps up to board our vessels, each passenger will need to be able to cross the threshold under their own power (there is not a ramp from pier to vessel).
• To help ensure the safety of our guests and crew, no one is permitted to be carried up the steps and across the gap between the boat and dock.
• Full Face snorkel masks are not permitted

• Please call the activity provider the day before to reconfirm your booking. Your voucher has the necessary contact information listed.
• The electronic waivers are one per person, including children.

We loved everything about this tour! The boat was comfortable and clean and there was plenty of room for our gear. The food was excellent. My husband and I are omnivores, but we thoroughly enjoyed the vegan lunch and bre ... akfast! The snorkeling was so much fun and we were fortunate enough to have perfect weather. We brought our own snorkel equipment and fins, but the boat was equipped with all of that plus life vests, pool noodles, inner tubes, sun screen and anti fog spray for masks. Last, but most importantly, the crew was amazing. Everyone was so caring and helpful and made sure we felt comfortable and safe in the water and out. We will be sure to book with Fair Wind Cruises again when we travel to the Big Island.

Had a great day on the water. Right out of the bay we experience whales breaching the water. Staff was well trained, everyone had their job and was on it. They were very helpful in and out of the water. Very knowledgab ... le about the history of the bay and Capt. Cook. Breakfast and lunch was very good and served efficiently. Saw lots of species of fish on the coral reef at the Capt. Cook Monument. To finish the day we were entertained by Spinner Dolphins jumping out of the water. Highly recommend!

A Relaxing and Enjoyable Trip with Good Food but Mediocre Snorkeling

On the whole, I'm glad I went. It was a lovely day, the boat was comfortable, and food great. The trip included a plant-based breakfast and lunch, with Kona coffee and alcoholic drinks available for purchase. The boat st ... opped twice on the way out so our guide could explain what we were seeing along the shore. All the staff members were delightful and took good care of us. Unfortunately, Kealakekua Bay did not offer the variety of sea life I experienced in other Hawaiian locations. I wonder if the reef has been affected by global warming. My prior experiences were 20 years ago, so things may be different now. My experience was complicated by the fact that the corrective face masks were only available in a medium, which was too large for me. Consequently, I had major water leakage and was unable to spend much time snorkeling. One of the staff explained that supply chain problems have limited the availability of corrective masks. That's a good reason for bringing your own! My sister, who had her own mask, explored more widely and commented on the relative scarcity of sea life, although she did see one kind of fish that was new to her. Nevertheless, the trip was fun. I enjoyed my run down the slide - my sister's dared me to do it! A number of snorkeling tours go to Kealakekua Bay. I looked at the other tour boats there and concluded that ours was the best. All in all, it was a great way to spend the morning. (Did I mention that both breakfast and lunch were delicious?)

Will our guide help us with snorkeling if it is our first time?

Yes. If you need instructions on how to snorkel, there will be a 5-10 minute snorkeling class with a crew member before you enter the water.

Is there a safe place to store my belongings while on tour?

The only type of storage available is the space around your seating area. There will always be one crew member on board at all times, so it is advised that you keep your belongings with you rather then leaving them in your car.

The Fair Wind II is a 63 ft. aluminum catamaran. It has shade canopies on both lower and upper decks, fully covered cabin, two 15-foot water slides and a high dive platform, two stairways for easy access in and out of the water, fully equipped bar and galley, two spacious restrooms, and fresh water showers.

The British erected the Captain Cook Monument on the shore of Kealakekua Bay to commemorate this site as the place that Captain James Cook initially made landfall in Hawai’i, which also was the place that he perished. The bay itself holds a fascinating history of festivals, gods and is a sacred place for Hawaiians.

The waters off the Kona Coast, from Keauhou to Kealakekua Bay, enjoy some of the calmest water conditions throughout the day in Hawai’i - protected from stronger easterly winds by Hualalai Mountain. As we head south, Kealakekua Bay’s waters offer some of the best visibility in the entire state and a wealth of tropical reefs to explore. We provide guidance, snorkel gear, flotation devices, and also have a high dive and two 15 foot water slides so that you can enjoy this fantastic site to its max for the afternoon! The cruise lasts for 3-½ hours after departing from Keauhou Bay, including 1-½ hours to snorkel in Kealakekua Bay.

When you arrive at Keauhou Harbor, look for the boat ramp where boats are trailered in and out of the water. Our boat will arrive at the ramp, and our boat crew will check you in. If you do not immediately see us, please call 808-326-2682.

We cruise from Keahou Harbor into the crystal clear blue waters along the Kona coast, while enjoying fresh fruit, snacks, and beverages.

While the boat is underway, the crew will point out interesting features along the Kona coastline, which is rich in Hawaiian history. The Kealakekua Bay snorkel tour will last approximately 3 hours.

South Kona has a bevy of historically significant Hawaiian Heritage sites, full of mana (spiritual power).

Staying close to the Kona coast as we travel south towards Kealakekua Bay, we watch closely for any interesting marine life.

Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins

We may stop the boat to enjoy the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris) putting on a show.

Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins rest close to shore during the day, and will sometimes interact with our boat. We may see them riding our bow or playing in our wake, and we may see them spinning through the air as they jump out of the water.

Humpback Whale Watching

December through April is the Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) season in Hawaii. We will look for humpback whales, whose annual arrival to Hawaii and lengthy stay make for the very best whale watching.

Seeing a breaching humpback whale is an experience like no other!

After a brief show from the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, humpback whales, and whatever else of interest is found along our way, we will arrive at the world famous Kealakekua Bay, the site of the Captain James Cook monument.

Kealakekua Bay

Your crew will share information about the fascinating history and legend surrounding Kealakekua Bay State Historical District.

“Kealakekua” roughly translates to “Pathway to the Gods.” The impressive Pali Kapu O Keōua (the sheer cliff face) in the Kealakekua Bay once served as a burial ground for the Hawaiian Ali’i (royalty).

Large fishing villages flourished on both the north and south ends of the bay in the 1700s, with several thousand Hawaiians inhabiting the area. Many Ali’i chose to live in this area because it was believed to be the burial site of Keōua Nui (considered to be the Father of Kings).

Captain James Cook

Captain James Cook and his men made landfall in the HMS Discovery and Resolution in January of 1779. The villages were celebrating Makahiki, a festival to honor Lono, the god of fertility. Makahiki was a time of peace and aloha.

Because of the coincidental timing of their arrival, Cook and his men were viewed as demigods and accepted as guests, allowed to stay in the village for several weeks. Cook’s men traded goods with the Hawaiians, who were fascinated with the white man’s use of iron.

It is suspected that Cook and his men exploited the Hawaiians generosity and over-stayed their welcome. One of Cook’s men died and the first documented Christian service was performed in Hawaii for his funeral. This exposed Cook and his men as mere mortals, and tensions began to rise. Cook and his men decided to leave after Makahiki.

Two weeks out to sea, the foremast of the Resolution was damaged during a storm. Cook and his men were forced to return to the safe harbor of Kealakekua Bay. This time they were met with hostility and animosity. Cook tried to find the supplies to repair his ship, but received no assistance from the Hawaiians.

It is rumored that a band of natives stole a small cutter ship and Cook, in retaliation, attempted to kidnap King Kalaniopu’u (the ruling king of Hawaii island). Cook was killed in the skirmish that ensued and eventually a monument was erected by Captain Cook’s countrymen in 1874 on the spot of his untimely demise.

Captain Cook’s monument in Kealakekua Bay is only accessible by water or a lengthy hike along steep, rocky trails.

The Best Snorkeling On Hawaii Island

Kealakekua Bay became a Marine Life Conservation District in 1969 and is a federally protected park. Entry into this natural Marine Life Conservation reserve is limited to only boats with permits to operate within the Kealakekua bay.

Because it is a protected park, the coral reef and abundant marine life is second to none for snorkeling.

Your crew will guide you through the calm waters, pointing out several varieties of colorful marine life you might encounter.

Some exciting finds may include the color-changing trumpetfish (Aulostomus chinensi), the schools of cheerful yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens), the fearless black triggerfish (Melichthys niger), the brightly colored parrotfish (Scarus rubroviolaceus), the shy white mouth moray eels (Gymnothorax meleagris), the elusive octopus (Octopus cyanea), and many more!

Keep your eyes peeled for the state fish of Hawaii, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Reef triggerfish, Rinecanthus rectangulus) who is only found in Hawaiian waters and a rare endemic inhabitant, the lauwiliwilinukunuku’oi’oi’ele’ele (Black long-nosed butterflyfish, Forcipiger longirostris) who is only found in Kona waters.

Because of the protected nature of the bay, winter storms and swell do not disturb the fragile corals growing within Kealakekua Bay.

You will see some incredible varieties of corals dotting the reef, such as rice, lobe, or finger corals, all displaying some spectacular colors. The different textures of the coral provide safe havens for all manner of marine life. Please keep in mind that coral, despite looking very much like a rock, is very much alive. Coral is very sensitive to even the slightest disturbance, from a fin kick to fingers.

We will do our best not to touch the coral so that future visitors to the bay can enjoy the same vivid seascape.

After snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay for about an hour and a half, we start heading back to the harbor while keeping an eye out for more exciting marine life on the way home.
