It feels hard to make end-of-year statements this year. Anything along the lines of “We learned so much,” or “How crazy was that?” sounds incredibly understated, and pretty much wrong. Yet, here we are, another year passed, and we can’t help but look back on the way things were. Despite everything, we kept finding so many beautiful, fabulous, jealousy-inducing homes to help pass the time in 2020. We dug into our archive of home tours and found this year’s fan favorites. From genius small-space solutions to brilliant yet doable DIYs, and a slew of amazing vintage finds, these stories highlight the essence of Clever. Smart living can be beautiful too. Check out the best ones below.

12. Inside Supermodel Elsa Hosk’s Vintage-Filled SoHo Loft

Elsa leans proudly on her coveted Mario Bellini modular sofa wearing a Jacquemus suit and By Far sandals. In the background, Elsa’s favorite piece, an Ettore Sottsass mirror , casts a pink glow throughout the space. “I’ve always wanted it. Every time I had a big job I would buy something that I’d been wanting forever,” she remarks of the celebrity-favorite mirror. 

Our fall cover star, Elsa Hosk , the supermodel and all-around stylish Swede, decorated a stunning space in downtown NYC that’s 100% her. “Design is the ultimate creative process—you can really reflect your feelings and your mood into your surroundings,” she says. From the candy-colored bedroom to her plush dressing room, the mood in Elsa’s loft is joyful, energetic, and incredibly cool.

11. Learn One Designer’s Secrets to Making a Studio Apartment Feel Grand

The living area of Peter’s apartment features a mix of custom pieces , like the sofa and window treatments, alongside vintage elements, like the midcentury-modern coffee table that he sourced on Chairish .

Peter Sandel has a few tricks for making a studio apartment feel grand. For his own West Village home, the interior designer chose fresh finishes, statement furniture, and tons of texture.

10. This Miami Designer Sources Local Vintage Goods to Enliven Her Rental

Carla at her travertine-and-chrome dining table, which she snagged from a private seller in Key Biscayne.

Though interior designer Carla Lores rents an apartment in the Art Deco Historic District of Miami Beach, the only identifiable relic of the home’s 1930s origin is an ornate, nonworking fireplace. All of Carla’s furniture is secondhand, so she keeps her home current with tchotchkes from contemporary artists. “I like the idea of holding on to these new objects so at some point they become vintage,” she explains.

“I’m very inspired by my friend Courtney Applebaum , she helps me pick out things,” says Krissy, who is a big fan of shopping via eBay—where she found the vintage yellow rug .

Five hundred square feet may not seem like much, but Sky Ting cofounder Krissy Jones turned her New York City walk-up into a truly dreamy space. “I love working with my friends in New York,” says Krissy when describing all her prized objects.

8. This Creative Consultant Transformed Her Home With a Lot of Art and a $40 Hack

“I knew what I liked,” Natasha says. “I have a midcentury aesthetic, but I’m also eclectic and have a lot of pieces from traveling that don’t adhere to a specific time period or design style. I wanted to marry it all together and evoke eclecticism without feeling untidy or overwhelming.”

In her 350-square-foot Upper West Side studio, Natasha Nyanin managed to fit a living and dining area, home office, bed, bookshelf, and tons of bold art and decor.

7. Laura Harrier Doesn’t Care What You Think About Her Light Pink L.A. Home

Our very first digital cover star, actor Laura Harrier , opened the doors to her L.A. home, which is filled with major vintage gems and the most soothing shades of pink—just don’t call it millennial! “Well, when you call it that, it makes me like it less,” she says, laughing.

6. Tour a Philly Apartment With the Most Brilliant Kitchen Update

Zoë Rayn and Eddie Russell lounge in their living room. Along one wall is a record player and a chrome lamp that Eddie found on the street and had rewired. “It’s perfect and works perfectly,” says Zoë.

Personal beauty is imbued in every corner of Zoë Rayn, the founder of Caldera Magazine , and Eddie Russell’s home, which they share with their cat, Karen. The warm and eclectic space is minimally furnished with midcentury vintage finds and art pieces, which play well with the building’s architectural details and natural light.

5. Isabella Boylston’s Brooklyn Apartment Is an Art-Filled Oasis

Isabella and Dan, who’ve been together for seven years, have filled their apartment with artwork from friends and family.

Although Isabella Boylston , the award-winning principal ballet dancer, says her 1,500-square-foot space still feels like a work in progress, she’s enjoyed the process of putting her home together with husband, Daniel Shin. “Dan is the interior-decorating guru,” she says. Dan replies, “My mom has always been a really good interior decorator. I get it all from her. Except for the middle room—the middle room is probably more my dad.”

4. Molly Bernard’s Brooklyn Apartment Is an Instant Mood Lifter

In her Brooklyn apartment, actor Molly Bernard let a piece of statement artwork by friend and fellow Clever home tour subject Ethan Cook guide her color palette and furnishing choices. “He brought it over the day I moved in,” Molly says, “and that ended up informing the design of the whole room.”

3. This Couple’s Minimalist Brownstone Exudes the Control We All Crave

“Natural light in itself is a form of art and we view our place as a way to study it,” adds Charlie. “In the winter, the light comes through the windows differently than it does during the summer. When you study light, you realize that there are many ways for light to get from point A to point B and each way has a subtly different outcome.”

Minimalism requires meticulousness. It’s a mindset photographer Charlie Schuck and prop stylist Natasha Felker have mastered in their Brooklyn brownstone, where their curated possessions meet a clean palette awash in natural light. “If there’s something we fall in love with, we first look to see if it can be found used, at a discount, or for a trade,” Charlie says. “If not, then we buy or commission the piece to be constructed.”

2. This Vibrant Barcelona Apartment Has the Most Remarkable Doorways

Wood and leather chairs by Heaps & Woods create an immediate warmth in the living room. Robert Rauschenberg’s Storyline II lithograph, one of Juan’s most prized prints, brings the room together with vibrant hues and a buoyant mood.

Juan Moreno Lopéz-Calull is the founder and designer at John Brown Projects , a Barcelona-based interior design firm and art consultancy. As a 28-year-old city dweller, Juan had the luxury of creating a space catered exclusively to his own needs and vision. Upon securing the apartment, he excitedly imagined it as a canvas to showcase the artists he champions professionally, a platform to articulate his team’s mission and capabilities, and an opportunity to tell his story. The outcome is a home that exists as a living, breathing testament to Juan’s very personal aesthetic ideals, passions, and philosophies.

Pittman took inspiration from Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean design, which is evident in the home's terra cotta tile, antique Spanish lebrillos, and original ironwork staircase. Layers of custom upholstery, antiques, art, and textiles make the home feel extra personal and inviting.

Summer Thornton's Enchanting Chicago Townhome

This stunning living room from Summer Thornton's Chicago townhome earned the coveted spot on our May-June 2022 cover for good reason. The room's warm apricot paint color was inspired by a sunlit building Thornton had seen in Venice during her travels, while hand-marbled paper crowns the ceiling. We love how whimsical the room feels, thanks to mixed patterns, layers of texture and color, and an extra-fun tasseled couch.

John Saladino's Timeless Montecito Home

John Saladino's California home , which was the cover star of our March-April 2017 issue, is a love letter to beautiful architecture, decorating, gardens, and furniture design. Many of his idyllic rooms look like still-life paintings and feature incredible antiques, sculptures, and global textiles. When designing this pool and outdoor space, Saladino said he was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman nymphaea—natural grottoes said to be homes of nymphs. Magical, indeed!

A Hudson Valley Home by Louise Copeland

This nearly 200-year-old home in the Hudson Valley is the ultimate retreat for a young family. Though the layout of the house has been brought into the 21st century, there's still plenty of vintage charm to go around. 19th-century antiques, natural light, and lush gardens make this a bucolic escape that still manages to feel quite livable and contemporary.

To say social media can be used as a source of inspiration is an understatement. In many ways, what we see on Pinterest and Instagram is what nudges us to take the next big step. Happi Habitat

A relatively new channel and yet Gemma Samuels, host of Happi Habitat , is giving us so much inspiration with the makeover projects she has worked on with her clients. Much of Gemma’s work has mid-century modern aesthetic written all over it, and we love it. As well as home tours, each video goes into detail about why she has made specific interior decisions, giving viewers an opportunity to learn about interiors from the perspective of a designer.

Design notes by house & garden.

A short-film series of home tours that will inevitably fill you with country and cottage inspiration. The House & Garden blog is synonymous with interior design, and their channel is no different. From designers to authors, their whimsical aesthetic is perfect for anyone, really but if it’s vintage originality that you’re after, Design Notes is one to watch.

Open Door by AD

Think no expense spared, and a lot of glam. A look inside celebrities’ homes from around the world is a hobby in itself, right? AD has been leading the way in showing the best of architecture, style, and culture when it comes to interior design. Their Open Door series is a showcase of homes that ooze creativity and a reflection of the artistic nature of the celebrities themselves. In all honesty, once you watch one you’ll be hooked.

A showcase of homes that have been defined by Wendy Goodman, New York Magazine’s resident design expert, as outrageous, extravagant, and unusual. Quite the intro for the homes shown in The Cut ‘ Interior Lives ‘ series and let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint. While short, the films are bursting with eclectic designs that, regardless of taste, will leave you feeling inspired.

Never Too Small

More often than not, small spaces call for big ideas. Never Too Small has dedicated itself to sharing innovative designs for small spaces, including studio apartments and self-contained projects. As more people live in cities and find themselves a home in urban places, thinking about creative ways to improve the quality of life in confined spaces is an exciting challenge in and of itself.

When it came to revamping her longtime abode in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, designer Liz Caan repurposed a lot of pieces and strategically filled the historic house with whimsical art and antiques.

“I think the beauty of this home is that it's constantly evolving," she says.

Instagrammers swooned over this darling nursery , thoughtfully put together by Nashville-based designer April Tomlin for her close friend Lauren Akins (who happens to be married to country superstar Thomas Rhett).

"It is a real and happy home," Tomlin enthuses. "I love how much love it holds."

Liz Caan turned heads once again with this shot of her family home’s incredible kitchen , which features an enviable walk-in pantry.

“I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and wanted to be surrounded by things I love made by people I love,” she reveals.

The English-inspired kitchen and servery of this Nova Scotia new build by Philip Mitchell boasts reclaimed antique wood floors, handcrafted cabinetry, and ultradurable surfaces.

“Every drawer is divided to hold something specific, whether it’s utensils or spices,” notes the designer.

Designed by Nannette Brown , the glossy all-black kitchen of this New York City apartment oozes with high drama and sophistication.

“I’m a big believer that within a home, different rooms should evoke different feelings and purposes,” says the local designer.

The spectacular transformation of this Boston home bar by Twelve Chairs Interiors , designed for serious wine collectors who love to entertain, involved adding an extra row of cabinets and polished nickel knobs and pulls—not to mention a fun rolling ladder.

“By going all the way up, we added function and erased the unsightly void,” explains the firm’s cofounder, Miggy Mason.

Last but not least: Rounding out this year’s list is Brown Hall Design principal Colleen Bashaw’s sweet bar setup.

Replete with a little brass sink and mini fridge, the charming space seamlessly blends in with the rest of her New Jersey home ’s whimsical interiors.

12 Incredible Youtube Museum Channels You MUST Watch

During this time of stay-at-home order and travel restrictions, art galleries and museums have jumped on the virtual gallery bandwagon. If you’re an art lover who doesn’t  love to read , these  Museum Youtube Tours  are just the things for you! Many museums and organizations have a massive backlog of online videos that take you through their collections. In these videos, you get introduced to new artists and learn DIYs based on historical artistry. And best of all, they let you in some secrets only the curators know! If you want a little break from the every day and feel like a virtual escape, read on for my favourite  Youtube Museum Tours  part of my series on  virtual travel .

British Museum

The British Museum in London, England, is where you can find over two million years of human history and culture. It contains some world-famous objects, including the Rosetta Stone , the Parthenon sculptures and Egyptian mummies . 

Curator’s Corner

Their youtube series called ‘ Curator’s Corner ‘ introduces you to the various curators working in the museum. They take the time to show you different interesting objects from their specialties. And most of the videos are set, literally in their “corner” or office space. This is just another little treat since you feel like you are being let into their private world. Never to be seen otherwise. One of my favourite curators is  Naomi Speakman , who is the curator for late medieval Europe . She loves exploring the fantastical world of medieval bestiaries and the mythical creatures found within. Seeing as these items are so old it’s amazing how she breathes new life into them!

Curator’s Tour

Since many museums’ exhibitions were not viewable to the public when the world shut down, the curators turned to online video to take viewers on a tour of their displays. These tours come in both shorter videos and live tours, which are hour-long specials hosted by various experts. It’s such a unique way to view these incredible exhibitions despite not being there in person.

The Mütter Museum

The Mütter Museum is America’s Finest Museum of Medical History . The museum aims to help the public appreciate the mysteries and beauty of the natural human body. The museum hopes to help people learn more about the diagnosis and disease treatment throughout history. Inside the museum, you’ll find some of the most incredible collections of anatomical specimens, medical instruments, cabinets of curiosity and more!

While the museum is not for the faint-hearted, their videos are an extraordinary adventure! Especially when we are amid a world-wide pandemic, their exhibitions on the 1918 Influenza Pandemic seem almost eerily apt. Their half-hour-long museum tour is an excellent introduction to what the museum is all about and worth your time to check out!

National Portrait Gallery

London’s National Portrait Gallery has been one of the most important art institutions since 1856. But today, with modern technology, we are being invited into the museums to discover the stories behind the world’s greatest paintings and artists. Their online youtube channel contains interviews with leading art experts, live recordings of talks and events, and insights into our latest exhibitions. 

10 minutes Talks

Their 10-minute talks series is one of my favourites for anyone who wants to get a little primer into art history but doesn’t want to get overwhelmed with information. These short segments study just one painting by one artist. Different curators and producers from the museums lead you through the artwork, the hidden meanings and any historical context which lends itself to studying the painting with more intention.

5-Minute Meditation

Another fascinating tidbit that they have been producing during the pandemic are these 5-Minute Meditations . This series is all about blending mindfulness and art appreciation. You grab a water or coffee and sit back with the gentle voices of the curators guiding you through the lines and textures of the painting as you have moments of self-reflection throughout. I have to admit; they are so soothing, they might even put you to sleep!

Talks for All

Lastly, if you are looking for something a little more in-depth, you can sit back and enjoy one of the longer videos called Talks for All . These lectures were initially recorded in the gallery in front of an audience, but now you can attend as an audience of one from the comfort of your own home. Something is oddly comforting about hearing the murmur of laughter or contemplation from the unseen audience in front of the lecturers. It makes you feel like you are really there.

The Field Museum

In Chicago, the Field Museum has been producing videos with the Chief Curiosity Correspondent for Youtube for the past eight years! Hosted by Emily Graslie, former volunteer of the University of Montana Zoological Museum, her heart burstingly charming personality guides you through all different parts of their collection. In such a large museum like the Field Museum, there are plenty of aspects of their collection that aren’t even on display in the museum but hidden away in the archives. Well, these videos put you behind the scenes in some of the unseen parts of the museum. One of my favourite episodes is all about their rare book room! There are also such topics as the Whale Warehouse , museums taxidermy , meteorites and more!

The Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is a museum in London, housed in the grand Hertford House in Manchester Square. This was once the permanent residence of the Seymour family, the Marquesses of Hertford. The Marquesses of Hertford, along with Sir Richard Wallace, for whom the museum is named after, amassed a vast collection of fine and decorative arts in their lifetime. These ranged from furniture, arms and armour, porcelain and Old Master paintings. Sir Richard Wallace bequeathed the collection to the British Nation in 1897 so that everyone could enjoy the collection.

Today, it really can, as much of the collection has been documented on video for all to see. Their playlist on the collection highlights is an excellent intro to all the wondrous things these collectors amassed over time.

Van Gogh Museum 

The Van Gogh Museum  in Amsterdam is a museum dedicated solely to the works of  Vincent Van Gogh . Famously, Vincent van Gogh only ever sold one painting during his lifetime, ‘The Red Vineyard.’ Today he is one of the world’s most notable painters, with his works selling for millions upon millions of dollars.

Throughout the pandemic, the Van Gogh museum has not only been creating entertaining videos for you to watch but tutorials for you to follow along with and learn as you go. Their series called ‘ Let’s Paint Like Van Gogh ‘ helps even the most beginning painter learn the simple techniques Van Gogh used to create his vivid and powerful masterpieces. They manage to simplify iconic parts of some of his paintings to allow you the chance to create your own at home!

In another series called ‘ In the Picture ,’ curators take you through their 2020 exhibition, which tells stories about identity and image, in 75 portraits.

Frick Museum

The Frick Collection in New York City houses the personal art collection of industrialist Henry Clay Frick . The museum is even located inside his old house on the Upper East Side. In addition to some old master paintings, the collection also includes fine furniture, decorative arts and more. Their 12-minute video introduction allows you to step inside the doors and look at the house almost as it was when Frick left it.

During the pandemic, they created many videos that allowed people to view their collection through a myriad of different themes. One of those series’ was called ‘Travels with a Curator,’ where curator Xavier F. Salomon , takes you on a virtual trip around the world. In the series, they study museums around the world and how they connect with the Frick Museum.

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum , located in  Amsterdam , is the Dutch National Museum. Inside its great walls are pieces dedicated to the arts and history of Amsterdam. At the start of the pandemic, the Rijksmuseum wanted to give viewers worldwide access to the secrets of their galleries, so they started the series  #RijksmuseumUnlocked . Throughout the series, various curators lead you through different parts of the museum to study themes and hidden meanings behind highlights from their collection.

Their newest series is called ‘ Rijksmuseum in 60 seconds ‘. These videos allow you to learn more about their collection in just one minute!

The American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History , located in New York City, is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions. Since opening its doors to the public in 1869, the museum attempts to help people discover and interpret information about the natural world around us. My favourite video series of theirs has got to be ‘ Shelf Life ‘! This series is relatively old, starting in 2014. The series is for curious minds and features curators opening doors, drawers and hidden away rooms to study rarely-seen items in the museum’s collection.

The State Hermitage Museum

I have long dreamt of visiting the  Hermitage Museum , delving into the dark Russian winter only to wander the halls of this incredible fortress of beauty.  The State Hermitage Museum  is located in  Saint Petersburg, Russia  and is the second-largest art museum in the world! The  collection  was founded by  Empress Catherine the Great  and contains over three million items! And while you might not be able to view each one of those items in person, you can experience it through an AMAZING virtual tour!

In May 2020, Apple created a five-hour cinematic journey inside the Hermitage museum. Throughout the videos, you are lead through 45 galleries, view 588 masterpieces, and wonder at the beautiful live performances which take place inside some of their most sacred spaces. Even more incredibly, the video was shot in ONE CONTINUOUS TAKE! The music composed throughout the video is so hauntingly beautiful, and I cannot recommend watching this piece more! You don’t need to watch all five hours, but I think once you start watching, you’ll find yourself entranced.

The  Victoria and Albert Museum  (also known as the  V&A ) is the world’s leading museum of art and design. Founded in 1852, the V&A promotes innovation and communicates the importance of good design. The collection contains over 2.27 million objects, dating from 1600 to the present. This video, hosted by curator May Rosenthal Sloan , explores vintage citrus fruit wrappers as new forms of advertising in the 19th century. This was the video that first started my binging of the V&A’s youtube channel. The packaging feels so ephemeral and yet like a work of art all at the same time.

So many objects in the V&A’s collection are small trinkets. And while seeing them in person is a beautiful experience, being able to study them in microscopic detail on video is a unique experience. One of my favourite videos is called ‘ Spotlight on Jewels ‘. Academy Award-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne , jewellery designer Stephen Webster , British Vogue jewellery editor Carol Woolton and V&A curator Clare Phillips come together in this feature to reveal their favourite items from the collection.

The  MET   or  Metropolitan Museum of Art   is America’s most famous art gallery. Located in the heart of  New York City , the collection is home to over two million works of art! with so many objects in their collection and a slew of curators to keep it all running, the content they are producing online is superb! Their ‘ Art, Explained ‘ series is a beautiful way to pick your favourite items from the collection and learn a little bit more about them in a concise amount of time! There are over 80 items that have been documented in the videos , so there are lots to choose from.

Another series which I love is called ‘ MET Stories ‘. This 12-part series features stories from all different kinds of people, from chefs, fashion designers and even lawyers, telling stories about how the MET influenced or changed their lives.

Throughout the pandemics, the MET has also been creating videos that spark their viewers creativity. This is everything from learning how to make a soap carvings, sculpturing clay pots and my personal favourite, creating your cabinet of curiosity !
