1. St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida

And if you're looking for some shade, duck into one of the many museums nearby, including the Dalí Museum, which houses the largest collection of the master's work outside of Spain. 2. Laguna Beach, California

Made famous by an MTV reality show, Laguna Beach is an ideal domestic beach getaway. Why? All of them boast an average temperature in winter of over 60 o F, with many consistently reaching 70Fs and even 80Fs. They offer a selection of airports that make them easily reachable and excellent hotels, mostly steps to the beach. In addition, there are countless other activities found nearby for those looking for fun and excitement both on and off the beach.

Puerto Rico: Best Places In Winter In USA For A Beach Holiday

If you want one of the best places in winter in the USA for a beach holiday, Puerto Rico offers 270 miles of beaches. Spanish is the dominant language in this area, and the beautiful architecture reflects its’ Spanish influence.

Turtle Beach Resort is a 2.5-minute walk from Turtle Beach. If the weather is too cool for you to enjoy an ocean dip, a hot tub on every patio will give you the chance to unwind with an excellent view.

Texas: Best Warm Beach Destinations For A Winter Vacation

Texas has a temperate winter, and snow is a freak occurrence. Hiking, enjoying the beach, and picnicking are all pleasant activities even in the winter months in Texas. The last significant snowfall on the coast in Texas was in 2004. Typically you can expect winter weather that allows you to wear your shorts so its a great time to visit. 

The Texas coastline is on the Gulf of Mexico. The average high temperature may be high forties at night, but your daytime temperatures rarely drop below 64 degrees.  

George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston is a large hub and only a 1 1/2 hours to Galveston. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is a smaller domestic airport only an hour away.

Padre Island

If you are a nature lover, a vacation exploring this barrier island is a delight. This undeveloped island has 130,000 acres of mixed coastal habitat. The Malaquite Visitor Center will arm you with nature notes, and you can hire adapted beach wheelchairs for the less mobile members of your party. 

Pack your binoculars and camera and prepare to do some intensive birding as 350 species stop off during the great migration. Sub-tropical temperatures in the winter months mean you can expect average highs above 65 degrees.

The closest domestic airport is William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. It is only a 40 minute drive. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is also in Houston and around 1 1/2 hours away.

The beach sits in the West Wetlands Park , and other attractions include the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden, Solar Demonstration Garden, and habitat for burrowing owls. The well-stocked lake is ideal for angling (license required). A children’s play area features zip lining and climbing structures.

Cattail Cove State Park , Parker

Patagonia Lake State Park

The desert has plenty of sand but little water. However, this artificial lake (265 acres) allows swimming, boating, and fishing creating one of the best warm beach destinations in the United States in winter.

People come to Patagonia Lake for fishing (Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, Catfish, and Trout), boating, and wildlife. You may spot hummingbirds, Inca Dove, and the black vulture along the Creek trail. 

In Patagonia, you can visit:

• Tucson Audubon’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds , if you didn’t manage to spot one in the wild.
• Patagonia Museum to learn about local history.
• Patagonia Birding and Butterfly Co for an organized nature spotting tour.

The nearest airport is Tuscon International Airport, 41 miles away. You will want to hire a car to get around. 

Patagonia Lake State Park is seven miles south of Patagonia. If you don’t want to camp in the park (camping bungalows are available), you can stay in a B&B in Patagonia. Stage Stop Inn offers a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool if you want to relax in comfort after a day on the beach.

California: Best Warm Beaches In United States For A Winter Holiday

California has hundreds of beaches. It may be chilly in the Pacific Ocean for a swim, but there are plenty of other beach activities. Unsurprisingly, in the winter, southern California beaches are much warmer than the north. 

Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County, Venice Beach in Los Angeles, and Coronado Beach in San Diego all have average winter temperatures around 66 o F. They are some of the best US beaches at this time of year to escape the cold.

Coronado Beach, San Diego

Tiny pieces of mica in the sand mean this beautiful beach sparkles in the sunlight. The tide pools at low tide team with life – hermit crabs, small fish, and gently waving sea anemones.

The Sandcastle Man may have already built a fantastic sculpture to see on the beach. In addition, you can book a lesson to learn how to build your own fantasy sandcastle. 

A walking tour introduces and explains the history and the culture of the Coronado area. The watersports are plentiful and varied – kayaks, paddleboards, yachts, and surfing. You can opt for a water tour or explore with a hired bike.

Staying at Lowes Coronado Bay Resort puts you close to the beach (1.4 miles) and offers a choice of three pools and other facilities.  The Silver Strand beach is only 500 yards away and offers an alternative beach experience.

Venice Beach, Los Angeles

Venice Beach is 5 miles away from Los Angeles International Airport.

Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo County

The central coast is warm enough in winter for beach fun with the added benefit of whale spotting. There are plenty of places to eat and shop, plus the Point San Luis Lighthouse looks great in holiday snaps. In addition to Avila Beach, you can easily walk to Olde Port Beach, Pirates Cove beach, and Fisherman’s Beach. It is an excellent destination in winter to celebrate a milestone birthday in the United States .

The closest airport is San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. It is between Los Angeles International airport and San Fransisco International Airport at 194 miles and 220 miles away respectively.

There are four main Hawaiian islands that service the bulk of visitors to Hawaii. They are Hawai’i (or Big Island) , Kaua’i, Maui, and O’ahu (Honolulu). Each of them guarantees warm weather in all seasons. They offer some of the best beaches in the United States in winter.

Daytime temperatures are in the low 80s, but you may want to pack a light jacket for night-time when it can drop to high 60s.

Explore Kauai – Rugged And Beautiful

If you want to visit some of the lesser populated parts of the Hawaiian Islands, try Kauai with its amazing beaches. You can either walk along the shore, access hidden beaches by helicopter or boat, or follow a trail to find a hidden gem . In Kauai, you will find some of the best US beaches in winter.

The main airport is Lihue Airport. Many airlines offer direct flights. Alternatively, you can fly to Honolulu International Airport and pick up a local flight lasting around 25 minutes. To get around the island, you are best renting a car. 

You can opt for your preferred accommodation in:

Hanalei Beach In The North

At Hanalei Beach, you get two miles of pristine sand with mountains as a backdrop. The waters are calm, and the ocean is still warm in winter if you want to try some boogie boarding.  If you enjoy a beach walk, walk down to the next beach Makua (Tunnels) Beach, where the surf is rougher and louder. Both are fantastic options and some of the best beaches in winter in the United States.

Hanalei beach was the backdrop for the film South Pacific and is as beautiful in person as on the screen.  Winter is when you get the best surf, but the beach is gorgeous and fun at any time of year. 

Ke’e Beach In The North

This beach is popular for snorkeling and is easy to access at the end of Highway 560. It gives you views of the Napali Coast, and the trip to the beach is part of the experience. On the way, you can see the Maniniholo Dry Cave and visit the Limahuli Garden and Preserve. 

Although this is a popular snorkeling beach, it is for the experienced and strong swimmer as there is a severe rip tide. This beach is best enjoyed from the shore for the average family, but a lifeguard is on duty. 

The Kalalau Trail starts at this beach, but plan to be back for sunset with your camera at hand. Have you heard that the last light of the setting sun is a green flash? This is the beach that proves the legend is true. 

Poipu Beach In The South

The water is clean and award-winning. The swimming is safe, and the wildlife shares the beach, but please leave the seals alone.  

The spectacular natural feature to observe (from a distance) is the Spouting Horn – a natural blowhole on the lava shelf that can project the seawater up to fifty feet. Try and photograph it at sunset when the colors are fresh out of a child’s paintbox. The water spray draws the attention but listen because another blowhole in the area sucks in air, producing a strange groaning sound. 

The Mahaulepu Heritage trail will delight naturalists, geologists, and those who love to explore other cultures – an excellent way to get some exercise and learn something along the way. 

Explore Oahu

If you want to go to an island with the most cosmopolitan feel, then go to Oahu. The city of Honolulu is there with all the trappings of city life (with stunning views of beaches and the ocean). You find more remote areas and more traditional Hawaiian living in other parts of the island. Like all the Hawaiian islands, you can find some of the best American beaches to escape the cold.

Waikiki beach is famous as the birthplace of modern surfing with Duke Kahanamoku. It is the most popular beach in Hawaii because of the surfing, white sands, warm waters, and historic appeal. For many people, Waikiki Beach is Hawaii.

The surf on Waikiki beach is beginner-friendly and one of the best locations to get started in this fun sport. The sunsets are spectacular and for those nervous of ocean predators – in 150 years, there have been no recorded shark attacks on Waikiki Beach. The winter weather is warm and rain is brief.

Aside from shopping, you can enjoy walking or cycling in Kapiolani Park (500 acres), visit the Waikiki Aquarium , or the Honolulu Zoo . 

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a must-see experience for visitors to appreciate the horrors of the Japanese attack on the USA on December 7, 1941. It killed 2400 American soldiers, injured countless others, and destroyed several navy battleships.

Honolulu Airport is a 40 minute drive to Waikiki.

Sheraton Princess Kaiulani puts you within walking distance to the beaches, the zoo, and other attractions. The hotel can signpost you to plenty of Hawaiian cultural activities so that the whole family can enjoy the experience.

Oahu’s North Shore – Best For Surfers

The winter months (November to March) see the giant waves. If you are not a top professional and just learning to surf, head to the southern beaches instead. However, if you want to be awed by what the best can do, check out the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing with your camera ready. In November, this high-profile surfing competition attracts the best from around the world.

The North Shore offers more than one beach –51 of them along 11 miles of coastline. The top three are:

• Sunset Beach – longest surf ride.
• Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline).
• Waimea Beach.

Explore Maui

Maui is the second-largest island in the Hawaiian Islands and popular with families as there are lots of things to do in Maui with kids, such beaches, hiking, food, and culture. It is home to Haleakala National Park , only one of two national parks in Hawaii, and one of the best US destinations for a beach holiday in winter.

A winter visit to Maui is best for:

• Surfing -but be careful where you do that if you are a beginner.
• Boogie boarding.
• Snorkeling.
• Whale watching from land or sea.
• White sand and sunshine.

The main airport on Maui is Kahului Airport. You can fly direct or opt to fly into Honolulu International Airport and then take a thirty-minute island hopper to Maui. 

On the island, you can use public transport and tour buses to see the sights and visit the beaches, but a rental car is the best option if you want to manage your own schedule. 

Makena State Park

You get the option of the Big or Little Beach and enjoy all the usual water activities: swimming, bodyboarding, skimboarding, and if the waves are calm, snorkeling. Little Beach is the safest for swimmers as you can get rogue waves on the Big Beach.

The volcano in the center of the park is dormant and attracts hikers. One word of warning (or encouragement??), nude sunbathing is tolerated on Little Beach.

Makena State park is 40 minutes from the airport.

• Palauea Beach – 1,150 yards

• Oneuli Beach – 1.3 miles.
• Wailea Beach – 1.4 miles
• Makena Little beach – 1.8 miles.

If you are not in the mood for the beach, you can enjoy a swim in the heated swimming pool.

Baldwin Beach Park

This beach in North Maui has plenty of facilities for showering and bathroom breaks; unsurprisingly, it is one of the best and most popular beaches in Maui. There are plenty of activities (swimming, snorkeling, cruising, parasailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding) and you are close to the historic town of Paia.  

The best (and safest) areas for swimming are at either end of the bay – Baby Beach and Baldwin Cove. In the center, the breaking waves are stronger, so pay attention to the waves and maybe have a word with the lifeguards stationed on the beach on how the ocean is behaving on the day you visit. 

Paia town is charming, and you can go gift shopping or find somewhere to eat. The Paia Stupa (consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 2007) is a landmark worth a visit. Visitors are welcome to admire the 27 feet Stupa and turn the Mani prayer wheel. There is a regular meditation program that you can book if you feel like resting your mind. 

La’akea Farm run by a vocational community, supports learning challenged adults and children. It hosts a farmer’s market and craft studios. It’s a beautiful place to visit, and your support helps keep it running. 

Baldwin Beach Park is 15 minutes from the airport.

Try the Paia Inn for proximity to Baldwin Beach Park and walking access to the historic town and these excellent beaches:

• Paia Bay Beach -50 yards.
• Paia Secret Beach – 550 yards.
• Baldwin Beach Park – 1,050 yards.
• Sprekelsville Beach – 1.7 miles.
• Ho’okipa beach – 1.9 miles

You are close to shopping, restaurants, and beaches without needing a car if you prefer to have a quiet, relaxed winter beach vacation. 

Georgia: Best Warm Beaches In US In Winter

Georgia (the home of Coca-Cola) has some of the best beaches in the US in winter. In addition, January and February are low season and very affordable.  

The coldest month is November, and the daytime temperature can drop below 50 degrees. October, December, January, and February all have daytime temperatures above 60 degrees. You might not want to go swimming, but you can enjoy water sports and other beach activities.

Tybee Island or Savannah Beach

On Tybee Island, you get a city on an island with a pirate’s past. The sand is smooth, you can bike around town, and the seafood is fresh and delicious. It is a haven for nature lovers (Turtles and Osprey) with the added attraction of water sports and historic buildings (Civil war fort and Tybee Lighthouse).

The lighthouse is the oldest and tallest in Georgia. The exhibits in the nearby cottages cover the history of Fort Screven, the Euchee tribe, and island history.

You can take classes in sea kayaking or rent a sea kayak if already proficient. Winter isn’t peak dolphin season (although there are one or two), but you can still take a Captain Mike Tour to see the lighthouses (Tybee and Cockspur) and Fort Pulaski from the water. 

Most people enjoy using a bike to see the island because the roads are bike-friendly, and the island has plenty of scenic trails. 

There are other attractions in the area, but they are all over ten miles away. If you enjoy getting out and about, other places to visit are:

• Marinas – Savanah Bend, Tidewater Boatworks, Bahai Bleu, and the Isle of Hope. 
• Isle of Hope Historic District – a hundred years of occupation with an eclectic mix of architectural styles.
• Bonaventure Cemetery – famous for its role in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. This is a must-visit for lovers of the book or film. You won’t see the Bird Girl (relocated to a museum in Savannah), but the trees and bird life are astounding.

The nearest airport is in Savannah. The Hilton Head Airport is about 21 miles away (a 45 minute drive). 

The Admiral’s Inn on Tybee Island comes with a swimming pool and Tybee Island Beach is a short walk of 300 yards.

Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island offers a paved causeway and a host of activities with guided tours, a water park, and trails. 

Driftwood Beach attracts photographers as the driftwood is huge. You see a mixture of upright and fallen trees with that evocative driftwood patina achieved by sea polishing and aging. The trees did not drift in but are a result of the erosion of the land over the past 500 years. You see whole trees, including the roots. 

You can swim here, but there are no facilities to shower or have a bathroom break. This is an ideal choice for a beautiful warm beach in winter in America that connects you to nature.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center lets you see any current patients and provides exhibits about sea turtle conservation. If you visit the center, make time for a walk around the Jekyll Island Historic Landmark District. 

The Summer Waves water park will keep the big, and little kids in your party entertained – but check opening times. 

Bike trails are a popular way to visit the island’s many historic features:

• Horton House (ruins of Georgia’s first brewery), 
• St Andrews Beach (outdoor installation showing the history of a slave ship), 
• Historic Wharf and Mosaic the island Museum showcasing the rich and famous overwintering on Jekyll Island back in the early 1900s. 

Cumberland Island National Seashore is less than an hour away, shorter by boat.

The closest airport is Jacksonville International Airport (about 63 miles), and you will need a car to get here. 

The Seafarer Inn has a swimming pool, and you can walk to these beaches:

• Jekyll Island Oceanview Beach Park – 200 yards.
• Great Dunes – 900 yards.
• Driftwood beach – 1.7 miles.

South Carolina: Best US Destination For A Warm Winter Beach Vacation

The southeast of South Carolina has 2,876 miles of sea coast with some of the best US beaches in winter.

The coastal areas are mild, and the daytime temperatures rarely fall below 60 degrees. The night-time temperatures can be significantly cooler. You can still wear light clothing throughout the winter, but pack a warmer layer.

The winters are dry, and by visiting in the winter months, you miss both hurricane and tornado season. 

Hilton Head

There is a selection of beaches, including the popular Coligny Beach Park , and while you are on the island, you can enjoy luxury spas, golf, and tennis. There is a wide range of beach activities, including canoeing and windsurfing. You can explore the trails by foot, bike, or horse. There are also lots of amazing day trips from Hilton Head .

The nearest airport is Hilton Head Airport which is centrally located. 

Sonesta Resort is practically on the beach. Within walking distance, you can access these amazing beaches:

• Hilton Head Island beach – 200 yards
• Coligny Beach Park – 1.1 miles.
• Hilton Head Island Beach South – 1.8 miles.

This hotel is pet-friendly, has a restaurant on-site and a swimming pool. 

Sullivans Island

Sullivans Island is a small island (only three miles across) and the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe’s short story – The Gold Bug. White sand and great water sports make this one of the best US destinations for a warm beach escape when it’s cold. 

Sullivan Island Lighthouse has a unique triangular shape and an elevator to cut out climbing the stairs to the lantern room. You can’t tour the lighthouse (they used to get visitors to sign a document acknowledging the risk of injury), but it is an ideal subject for a photograph or sketch. 

If you enjoy historic forts, you can visit Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumner . These fortifications have a fascinating history from the wars of independence, civil wars, and World War II. Part of the less savory history is the international slave trade, and there is an exhibit outlining Sullivan Island’s involvement. 

If you are a fan of Edgar Allen Poe, then a visit to the library in a converted bunker near Fort Moultrie is a pleasant hour. Poe did his military service on the island. 

For those who enjoy taking home unusual gifts, drop into the Sandpiper Gallery where there are regular exhibitions of modern artists and a sculpture garden. As well as art to hang on your wall, you can browse for jewelry, ceramics, and glass. 

For outdoor activities, you have plenty of choices – kiteboarding and electric bike tours, as well as water sports.

The nearest airport is Charleston international Airport which is a 25 minute drive.

Flag Street 1851A hotel has an ideal location. It is only 200 yards from the beach and offers most home comforts. 

Huntington Beach State Park

This is one of the smaller of the best beaches in the US in winter. Hungtington Beach State Park only offers only three miles of beach. However, there is plenty of wildlife to see, and interesting history.

You can fish and enjoy trail walking as well as hanging out on the beach. The beach is wide and sandy but has few visitors. You can tour Antalya Castle , the former winter home of the sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington, but most people come for the wildlife and the trails. 

Nearby Brookgreen Gardens has plenty of winter events, including the Nights of a Thousand Candles (from the end of November to the beginning of January) and gothic folk tales around Halloween. The regular attractions are American sculptures, Lowcountry Zoo, and the botanical gardens. 

You can enjoy a varied program of water tours from the Crazy Sisters Marina and enjoy the spectacular views from the Murrays Inlet Marsh walk.

Lee’s Farmers Market gives foodies local produce and Italian products (over 100 authentic products shipped in from New York ). The market supplies local restaurants with the finest ingredients, but you can fill a shopping bag with delicacies to take home or eat for a picnic lunch. 

The area has plenty of beaches in addition to Huntington Beach:

• Murrells Inlet Beach – the marsh walk is enchanting and lets you see nature from a different angle.
• Garden City Beach – friendly atmosphere with water sports, crabbing, and fishing.
• Surfside Beach – pier, boardwalk, and a water park nearby.
• Litchfield beach – quiet and relaxing, surf, swim, or collect shells. Learn about the former rice plantations at the Gullah O’oman shop. 

Congaree National Park is just under 3 hours away.

The closest airport is Myrtle Beach International Airport, a 25 minutes drive.

A friendly and comfortable hotel is Hampton Inn Murrells Inlet . In addition, it is very close to the beach.

Unlike wildlife, most families don’t migrate to warmer climates to escape the winter weather. Still, you can opt to enjoy a few days or weeks topping up your vitamin D levels the natural way – by refreshing yourself on a warm beach in the sun. There is lots of amazing beaches in the USA waiting for you to discover to escape the cold.

They all have warm weather in December, and besides California, all of them even have water warm enough that you can swim in without a wetsuit.

(Just keep in mind that Mother Nature does whatever she wants, so we can never predict a random cold front.)

In addition to being able to lounge on the beach, December is the perfect time to learn how to surf because the waves are perfect for it.

Waikiki Beach is centrally located too, so you will be close to everything you could want—shopping, dining, desserts, plenty of amazing hotels, and countless activities.

2. Waimea Bay

If you want a quieter beach experience on Oahu, head to the North Shore. And once you’re on the North Shore, Waimea Bay Beach is THE beach to visit.

It’s one of the most beautiful islands not only on the island, but probably in all of Hawaii! The water is crystal clear with amazing views everywhere you look, plus there are fun activities like cliff jumping!

On the North Shore, you’ll be near countless other amazing beaches, the Dole Plantation, Waimea Falls, and the famous Polynesian Cultural Center (that you MUST visit!)

3. Ko Olina Lagoons

December temperature: High 82 / Low 66

On the sunnier, drier west side of Oahu, the Ko Olina Lagoons are four pristine, man-made beach coves. They are protected by a barrier reef, making them safe for swimming any time of year.

They’re all connected by a walkway and they all have restrooms and showers.

There’s plenty to do including swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding. You can also rent gear, hang out at the outdoor bar, or visit the resorts.

Lagoon 1: The busiest of the four because it’s attached to the Four Seasons and Aulani Disney Resort. It also has the least amount of parking, so if you’re not staying here it would be better to park somewhere else and walk over.

Lagoon 2, Honu: Not attached to any resorts, but gets busy fast. A few beach umbrellas are offered. Best for snorkeling.

Lagoon 3, Nai’a: Attached to the Marriot Ko Olina Beach Club.

Lagoon 4, Ulua: furthest away from the other lagoons, isn’t attached to resorts, and has the most parking so it’s the least crowded.

4. poipu beach.

The Garden Isle’s Poipu Beach is very well-known as one of the best beaches for families on the island. It’s on the south, more bustling and touristy side of the island.

Clear waters and a natural wading pool make it perfect for small kids (or even adults who want to relax in calm waters—like me, I loved it).

This beach has everything you’ll need—lifeguards, bathrooms, picnic area, showers, big parking lot, even a playground. You can spend a full day here. Close by is Sprouting Horn, a blowhole—the water can reach up to 50 feet!

5. Hanalei Bay

On the north, quieter side of Kauai is Hanalei Bay. It’s a huge bay with a beautiful mountain backdrop. The beach is wide, two miles long, with white, powdery sands. The water is clear and warm.

There is a long pier to walk out on to really see the views. Restrooms, lifeguards, and picnic tables on site and rental shops and dining options within walking distance.

You’ll really feel like you’re on a tropical vacation on the North Shore. It’s peaceful, incredibly lush, with plenty of gorgeous beaches to visit—and a lot less crowds than the south.

Big Island, Hawaii

6. hapuna beach.

Not only one of the best US beaches in December, Hapuna Beach is regularly voted among the best beaches in the world! It’s roughly 200 feet wide and stretches for about a half mile. It’s a breathtaking beach with pure white sand and a gradual slope into the ocean.

Besides being beautiful, the beach has everything you will need. There are restrooms, picnic tables, beach and gear rentals, food concession stands, lots of trees for shade, lifeguards, and a large parking lot. Snorkeling is good on the north and south sides too.

You can enjoy holiday dining and décor at the nearby Westin and on Christmas Eve, Santa visits Hapuna Beach!

7. Punaluu Beach

What about a BLACK sand beach? One of the most famous in all of Hawaii! This beach is not only one of the best US beaches in December, but also one of the most unique.

Right in the middle of the island—in between the popular, busy west side and the volcanic, quiet east side is Punaluu Beach.

The beauty of this beach is unbelievable. The sand is truly back and made of cooled lava, there are numerous picturesque coconut trees, and you can spot sea turtles lounging on the beach.

There are tide pools to check out, picnic tables, and vendors that sell food and souvenirs. Don’t forget your water shoes—the sand gets hot fast (I mean, it IS black) and there are rocks.

Maui, Hawaii

8. baldwin beach.

On the quieter North Shore of Maui is Baldwin Beach, long, wide, and perfect for surfers AND little ones. It’s the most popular beach on the north side, but there’s plenty of room to spread out.

While the main stretch of the beach gets great waves (especially in the winter), there are protected swimming coves on both sides with calm pools—on the west is Baby Beach and on the east is Baldwin Cove. It’s also a fully equipped beach with lifeguards, bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a pavilion, and shady trees.

Baldwin Beach is on the Hana Highway and a half mile away from Paia town—where some of the best food on the island is (including Mama’s Fish House!) Enjoy a meal before or after your beach day or get something to go and eat it at the beach.

9. Wailea Beach

Wailea Beach, another one of Hawaii’s beaches that is consistently on the world’s best beaches list, is the beach for the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons resorts. So, if you’re feeling fancy, this is your spot.

Wailea Beach is wide, has soft golden sand, and umbrellas and cabanas are sprinkled along the water. There’s a paved walkway that runs the length of the beach, bathrooms, showers, and free public parking.

When the ocean is calm, boogie boarding, body surfing, and snorkeling are great to do here.

10. Ka'anapali Beach

A previous winner for America’s Best Beach, Ka’anapali Beach has beautiful golden sands, clear waters, and a fun vibe.

There are seven resorts that line the beach plus a neighboring mall and many restaurants and activities around. So, if you want action, this is your spot.

Snorkeling is excellent around Black Rock, especially at the north end of the beach. I saw every single color of fish when I went!

You can also visit the booths along the beach and sign up to go parasailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, on a boat, or sign up for surfing lessons.

One of the coolest (and most famous) attractions is the cliff diving ceremony every night at sunset. A cliff diver lights the torches along the cliff and dives off of Black Rock. It is awesome to watch!

11. Napili Bay Beach

Napili Bay is one of Maui’s most visited beaches. And not only because of the white sand and clear, turquoise water..

Families love that it’s the calmest beach on the west side with small and gentle waves perfect for littles. They also love the low-key, less commercialized vibe; it’s more basic and homier than neighboring Ka’anapali.

Water lovers love that it’s great for snorkeling, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and boogie boarding. There are great opportunities for snorkeling and because the water is so calm, even kids can do it.

Since there are hotels in the area, there are plenty of spots to pick up some food. The Gazebo is well-known and a perfect spot to pick up breakfast before you head to the beach!

Puerto Rico

12. el escambron beach.

Walking distance from San Juan, El Escambron Beach is the most popular beach in the area, for tourists and locals—and for good reason.

First of all, it’s gorgeous. It has beautiful, clear waters, the sand is soft, plus there are mountain views to stare at. There are also plenty of palm trees for shade, and even a couple of spots you can hang a hammock to really relax.

Not only is it huge but it offers two different experiences on each side. On one side there’s a protected cove so the waves are calm and it’s the spot for swimming and lounging around. On the other side, the area is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Plus, there’s restrooms, showers, lifeguards, plus numerous restaurants and cafes nearby. This beach is a total crowd pleaser!

13. Monserrate Beach

My favorite beach in the area! Located in Luquillo, Monserrate Beach is perfect for everyone. It has an amazing calming vibe with swaying palm trees welcoming you as soon as you step in. It’s huge, so you’ll have plenty of room and the backdrop of lush green mountains is amazing.

You can have a relaxing day in the water or enjoy some snorkeling, because it’s protected by a coral reef so the waves are calm (also great for small kids!) The added bonus for this beach is it’s within walking distance of the famous Luquillo Kiosks. There are numerous kiosks that offer local food and souvenirs.

A short drive away from Monserrate Beach is the famous El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the US. It is a MUST SEE if you are in Puerto Rico. Many tours couple the tour with a beach visit too, but I did them separately because I wanted to explore the beach on my own.

14. Crash Boat Beach

In Aguadilla, on the west, more local side of the island is Crash Boat Beach. It’s the most popular beach in the area, and probably one of the most popular beaches on the island.

Locals rave about it because there is something for every type of person. You can swim, snorkel, or scuba dive in the clear, calm turquoise waters.

There’s also a fun vibe here (even called the island’s party beach) There’s music, food kiosks, banana boat rides, and even a long pier that you can jump off into the water.

15. Vieques Island

For ultimate relaxation and seclusion. Vieques island is a small island off the eastern coast of the mainland of Puerto Rico. Choose from over 40 jaw-dropping beaches like La Chiva or Blue Beach, which is ranked as one of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

The big draw of Vieques though, is Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent bay—and even though there are three to choose from just in Puerto Rico, this one is known as the best one. There are guided kayak tours offered at night to view the water light up.

16. magens bay beach.

Consistently voted one of the top-10 most beautiful beaches in the WORLD, Magens Bay Beach is what you picture when you think of a tropical beach. Crystal clear turquoise water, bright white sand with a touch of pink, a lush backdrop, swaying palm trees… it’s postcard worthy.

Since it’s a bay the water is calm and so are the vibes. Snorkeling is great, swimming is safe, and you might even catch adults laying on floats with a drink in hand.

The beach has food options, a rental shop, showers, restrooms, picnic tables, changing rooms, and lifeguards. Only downside is that there’s an entrance fee for anyone 13+.

17. Secret Harbor Beach

The water is calm and crystal clear, so snorkeling is amazing. Palm trees are scattered on the beach and hammocks are hung up between them. A floating raft is anchored in the middle of the bay that kids can jump into the water from.

Along with that, the beach has food on-site and a rental shop. This is a beach where you can spend the whole day!

18. rainbow beach.

If you’re looking for easy beach days with local Caribbean vibes, Rainbow Beach is it.

Rhythms, the restaurant/bar on the beach, serves up local foods and drinks. There’s a spot to rent beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkeling equipment, and jet skis.

If you want a lively time, visit on Sundays, which are called Sunday Fundays, are when the beach lights up with locals and live music. Avoid visiting on a Tuesday though, that’s when cruise ships dock and the beach gets crowded.

19. Buccaneer Beaches

Buccaneer Beach (on The Buccaneer Hotel property) is actually three beautiful beaches in one! Mermaid, Grotto, and Whistle Beaches are right next to each other and offer different types of beach vibes. And even though they’re on hotel grounds they’re still open to the public.

Mermaid Beach gives you everything you’ll need for the best beach day—lounge chairs, a restaurant and bar, restrooms, a rental shop, a dock, snorkeling, and games like volleyball and cornhole. Grotto Beach offers many of the same amenities, but it quieter and a great snorkel spot. All the way at the end is Whistle Beach; it’s tiny, secluded and never crowded.

St. John, Virgin Islands

20. trunk bay beach.

St. John’s most visited beach, most photographed beach, AND voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world by Conde Nast! It’s pretty much the best overall beach in St. John.

Trunk Bay is long with fluffy white sand, and has calm waters and thriving coral reefs that are perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. It has all the amenities you’ll need too—a snack shack, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, beach chairs, and a rental shop for beach gear. Unfortunately, there’s a small entrance fee though.

The beach can get crowded (especially on cruise dock days). Luckily, if you head left from the entrance, you’ll get more privacy and better snorkeling. And if you continue beyond the rocks, you’ll discover a small secret pocket beach, Jumbie Beach!

21. Salt Pond Bay Beach

If you want an adventure, seclusion, and amazing snorkeling, Salt Pond Beach is your spot. All the way on the southern tip of the island, a 10-minute hike on a gravel trail will lead you to this secluded beach. (And If you want to continue the adventure, Drunk Bay and Ram’s Head hiking trails are right there!)

The beach is crescent shaped, and the sand is sugary white. The water is shallow and calm so it’s great for swimming. Salt Pond Beach is known as one of the best spots on the island for snorkeling.

Because of its location, there aren’t many amenities. It has a few picnic tables and portable restrooms. A couple miles north you’ll find a Caribbean restaurant and a grocery store if you want to stock up on food.

22. Smathers Beach, Key West

23. Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myer’s Beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast is a beach lover’s dream. Sugary white sand, clear and warm waters, swaying palm trees, and unforgettable sunsets.

Aside from swimming and lounging on the beach, watersports like kayaks, jet skis, and parasailing are available. Fishing is popular on the pier, and while you’re up there you might spot pelicans and dolphins too.

Right next to the beach is Times Square, a lively shopping and dining area. You can take the free trolley all around town too! And if you have a car, Fort Myer’s bustling downtown area, River District, is about 20 minutes north.

24. Hollywood Beach

Named one of Fodor’s Best Beach for Families, Hollywood Beach is amazing—it’s wide, goes on for miles, and the water is clear.

The beach has a lot of options for water activities—jet skis, surf lessons, kayaking, parasailing, paddleboats, or just swimming. There are multiple volleyball nets set up on the beach too. And some resorts have full service on the beach, so you can get food and drinks right at your beach chair.

The beach is lined by the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, full of restaurants, boutiques, dessert shops, live music, and great people watching.

A free shuttle ride away is Young Circle, the downtown area, with even more activities and many holiday events like Christmas Near the Beach festival and market!

25. South Beach, Marco Island

South Beach offers a good old fashioned beach day. Calm waters are great for swimming or renting a kayak or paddleboat. If you want more action, jet skis, parasailing, and boat tours are available. There are plenty of restaurant options within walking distance too.

And if you’re in the holiday spirit, the festivities around town include a tree lighting celebration in the park, a Christmas Tree parade, and the Marco Island holiday boat parade.

26. Main Beach, Laguna Beach

Main Beach is the beach hot spot in iconic Laguna Beach, so you know it’s good.

You’ll be there all day using all the amenities—basketball, volleyball, a big grassy area, a boardwalk, and a play structure for the kids.

As for water sports, (you’ll need a wetsuit because the water is chilly!) you can body board, snorkel, kayak, and paddleboard.

The beach area is so walkable, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, museums, art galleries, and shopping. In December, the Sawdust Winter Fantasy Festival is a must see along with the Surfboard Menorah on Main Beach!

27. Coronado Central Beach, San Diego

Coronado Beach is pretty famous—it was voted #1 beach in America by Dr. Beach, top US beaches on TripAdvisor, and even featured in the old film “Some Like it Hot.”

It’s a picturesque California beach town. It’s long and wide and even sparkles due to the mineral mica in the sand. There are beach chairs and cabanas, volleyball, firepits, tidepools, and calm waves for swimming or boogie boarding.

Orange Avenue, full of restaurants and shops, is just a stroll away. For holiday fun, Hotel Del Coronado turns into a winter wonderland—there’s ice skating, a light show, beachside igloos, smores, gingerbread houses, and pictures with Santa. 28. Mission Beach, San Diego

Mission Beach is the best family friendly beach in San Diego. There are two parts of it—Mission Beach next to Belmont Park (the beachside amusement park), which is more popular and crowded, and South Mission Beach, which is quieter with a slower pace.

Mission Beach is a great gathering place for families because it’s high energy with plenty to do—a bustling boardwalk, swim, surf, boogie board, beach games, even bonfires. There’s even a surfing wave machine at Wave House.

Santa Monica Beach is three miles long and it’s also very wide. Its split into three different beaches.

Santa Monica Beach is the active area next to the famous Pier. You’ll see muscle beach and a set of aerial rings. Ocean Park Beach is further south and is a pretty active area with volleyball nets, beach tennis, surfing, and beach loungers. South Beach is less crowded and more of a local beach near downtown.

There are plenty of restaurants, rental shops, and playgrounds just steps away. And in December, Santa Monica goes hard for Christmas! There are events, special menus, and festive desserts all around the beach. Both Downtown Santa Monica and Third St. Promenade are lit up with art installations, plus there’s a tree lighting and ice skating!

It may not be the warmest winter beach (temps average in the 60s), but if you’re desperate to ditch the snow for sand, Myrtle Beach is an easy escape. This South Carolina stretch goes on for 60 miles, dotted by celeb-designed golf courses and boardwalks by the Atlantic. Take a break from the action at the family-friendly North Beach Plantation —the 7.5-acre oceanfront complex has five pools, a swim-up bar, a lazy river and a 17,000-square-foot spa, where you can bliss out with a Thai herbal massage.

South Padre Island, TX

A popular spring break destination, South Padre Island is cleared out come winter. But the 70-degree weather is ideal, and with no crowds you’ll have the place to yourself. Cheesy beach bars Clayton’s and Wanna-Wanna serve overpriced turbo piña coladas, if that’s your thing, but we’d prefer to ditch the tourist traps for more low-key haunts. Snag a table on the patio at The Cafe on the Beach to tuck into fresh shrimp tacos, crab cakes, grilled snapper and tortilla soup, or opt for a grab-and-go meal at Ceviche Ceviche (the mahi mahi with fresh mango and avocado is killer). When you want to venture outdoors, there’s the boardwalk along the Laguna Madre Nature Trail , the beachfront Isla Blanca Park (a popular picnic spot), and the 70-mile Padre Island National Seashore , the world’s longest undeveloped barrier island, just three hours away.

When the winter blues start to hit and sunny summer days spent strolling along the beach seem like a distant memory, there's only one antidote: a weekend away. Luckily, living in the South lends itself to year-round coastal getaways thanks to our temperate climate. A winter beach getaway is enticing because the shores are less crowded and it's not sweltering hot outside. For those looking for a more quiet beach vacation, this is perhaps the best time of year. These Southern beach towns hit the sweet spot of having a laid back atmosphere, gorgeous scenery, and plenty of charm—which makes them as perfect during the winter as the summer vacation season.

St. Simons Island, Georgia

Head to St. Simons Island for ancient oaks and breezy marshes on the Atlantic. This historic island is like taking a trip back in time. Book your stay at the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort for access to the quiet beach, and then venture into town for quaint shops and no-fuss restaurants. (Try out Southern Soul Barbeque or a local favorite, Gnat's Landing .) Drive the winding roads to visit beautiful Christ Church, Frederica, and its historic cemetery.

Hilton Head, South Carolina

Hilton Head is a low-key Lowcountry island that has something for everyone. The classic cuisine (like shrimp and grits with hush puppies) is enough to bring us in; but Harbour Town, known for its red-and-white striped lighthouse, charms with its beachy shops, abundant activities, and food with a westward-view (you have to catch the sunset here). Your getaway wouldn't be complete without a visit to the popular Salty Dog Café for an easygoing atmosphere, as well as plenty of long bike rides along the shaded pathways.

Bald Head Island, North Carolina

Life on Bald Head moves at a much slower pace, so get ready to trade your SUV for a golf cart—because no cars are allowed on the isle. You'll take a ferry from the mainland and quickly settle into the lazy, relaxed vibe of this town, getting to experience a truly unplugged lifestyle in a conserved oasis. You can stay at the Marsh Harbour Inn , or find a cozy porch-wrapped cottage to settle into. Bring some books you've been waiting to read and relax. We love it here so much, it was home to our 2017 Idea House .

Seaside, Florida

It's no secret that this is a popular spot pretty much year-round. Visiting during Christmas time is a no-brainer for its adorably festive decor, but don't miss the annual 30A Songwriters Festival , a late-January weekend full of music up and down 30A . The event transforms amphitheaters, town halls, restaurants, theaters, bars, and covered patios into music venues that offer great food and atmosphere to boot. Your best bet is to rent a condo or house in the area, but you can stay at the Watercolor Resort in Santa Rosa Beach or The Pearl Hotel in Rosemary Beach.

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

If you like old architecture and quirky beach town charm, you will love Bay St. Louis and its mix of Southern grace, mystery, and funk. Located just 90 miles east of New Orleans, this town is a merging of marsh, river, and Gulf of Mexico beach. Check out the charming Old Town for shops and art galleries. Venture just minutes away from Main Street to the Depot District for some of the town's best eateries (such as the Thorny Oyster) , boutiques, and the local Bay St. Louis Little Theatre . You'll want to go to The Mockingbird Café —a coffee house by day and music venue at night—at least once.

Cape San Blas, Florida

Cape San Blas is the place to go for pure rest and relaxation. Located near Port St. Joe along the Florida Panhandle, Cape San Blas gives you access to miles of uncrowded, white sand beaches. Around these parts, there's some of the best fresh seafood you can get. (Take a visit to the Indian Pass Raw Bar for that, and make sure to pick up a t-shirt as a souvenir. It's a rite of passage.) If you want to move around a little, discover the historic Cape San Blas lighthouse, visit nearby Pensacola for shopping, and take plenty of long walks on the beach. Careful, though, it gets windy.

South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is the closest thing you'll get to a tropical island in the great state of Texas. It's home to 34 miles of beautiful white sand and stunning clear emerald water. Soak it all in during the winter when the crowds are lighter. You can take a dolphin-watching tour with The Original Dolphin Watch  or  Breakaway Cruises , scope for the more than 300 species of birds at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary , and get your fill of fresh Texas Gulf seafood. Stay right on the beach at Texas' first Margaritaville Resort , which opened in 2023.

Folly Beach, South Carolina

Less than 15 miles from downtown Charleston, laid-back Folly Beach is the perfect escape. The surf town draws in visitors who fall in love with the wide beaches, eclectic atmosphere, and community of charming locally-owned restaurants and shops. If you love wildlife, Folly Beach is also home to loggerhead turtles, dolphins, bald eagles, sea birds, and several endangered species. The waterfront Tides Folly Beach hotel is a great place to book your stay.

Chincoteague, Virginia

Perhaps known most for the herds of wild ponies that call the barrier island home, Chincoteague also offers relaxing beaches and plenty of wildlife along the windswept dunes of the Assateague National Seashore . Located on the northern part of the Eastern Shore, the quiet town will give you the winter getaway you need. Stay at Miss Molly's Inn , a Victorian-era house turned seven-room B&B that offers high tea in the afternoons. You can't go wrong with any of the many seafood restaurants in Chincoteague, but try out Don's Seafood Restaurant for a casual environment and delicious crab cakes and oysters.

Nags Head, North Carolina

With its classic Outer Banks feel, Nags Head is a great destination for any beach-lover. There's a mix of on-the-beach relaxation (which is also pet-friendly) and off-the-beach amusements, such as go-kart tracks, a handful of mini-golf courses, a number of ice cream shops, and good restaurants. While you're there, visit Jeannette's Pier , Jockey's Ridge State Park , or the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Most people prefer to book one of the many rental properties in the area.

Fairhope, Alabama

One of the best times to visit Fairhope, Alabama , is during the off-season when there are even fewer people in the charming town. If you love the Gulf Coast, you won't find a more enjoyable place to spend a weekend, with historic homes, streets lined with live oaks, and a walkable downtown. Head to Panini Pete's for melt-in-your-mouth beignets and a courtyard table located right in downtown Fairhope. For the book-lovers, take a visit to Page & Palette . Here you'll find signed copies of books by local authors like Rick Bragg, Winston Groom, Howell Raines, and Fannie Flagg; and a knowledgeable staff that loves to make recommendations. We recommend staying in nearby Point Clear at the Grand Hotel Marriot Resort , a full-service resort that's dripping with Southern charm.

Cape Charles, Virginia

Quieter than better-known Virginia Beach on the Atlantic, this beach town showcases the beauty of Chesapeake Bay. Spend the afternoon fishing from the Cape Charles Fishing Pier, or fancy a stroll along Bay Avenue. Swing by family-owned  The Bakery on Mason  for warm pastries and picnic-perfect sandwiches. Rental company  SouthEast Expeditions  offers stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and guided excursions. 

Wilmington, North Carolina

Over the last few years, this beach community has been transforming old buildings and warehouses into cool restaurants and breweries, injecting new life into Wilmington's dining scene. You'll find plenty of coastal fare and classic Southern dishes at here—but there's also a lot more. Chef  Vivian Howard has brought wood-fired pizza and Italian cuisine to the popular South Front District with  Benny's Big Time Pizzeria , and a lovely wine bar called  The Second Glass  is just around the corner. For an extra special stay, check out Dreamers by DW , which is in a Queen Anne Victorian building.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

This island's quiet delights attract new visitors while locals cherish its pristine scenery. With dozens of short public pathways to get to the Anna Maria beaches , the choices are all fantastic for views and fun. A breakfast, or any time of day, treat is the wild original topping combinations at  The Donut Experiment.  Flavors range from Sea Salt Caramel and Vanilla Raspberry to more experimental combinations like Key Lime and Sriracha made with peanut butter, peanuts, and a Sriracha drizzle. The Bungalow Beach Resort offers 15 updated 1930s-era bungalows full of old Florida charm.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island is beautifully bounded by water, with the East River to the north, Jekyll Sound to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Learn a little about sensitive area wildlife at the  Georgia Sea Turtle Center , located near the Jekyll Island Club Resort . This facility is known for its interactive exhibits and turtle-rehabilitation programs.

Yachats, Oregon

There’s no denying that the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest is undiminished during winter months. In fact, if you enjoy moody fog, hypnotic waves, and the quietude of a forest trail, then Yachats (pronounced YAH-hots ) should be your next winter destination. Located along Route 101, Yachats is much quieter in the wintertime, allowing you to explore the Oregon coast without the throngs of summertime visitors. Put on your raincoat to hike the Saint Perpetua Trail to Cape Perpetua. It's a moderate, 1.7-mile hike through the Siuslaw National Forest. The views of the dramatic coastline and turbulent waves of Thor’s Well and Devil’s Churn are sure to be worth the walk. If you visit in January, make plans to stop at the Agate Festival , a three-day event that focuses on the region’s prized gemstone.

Cape May, New Jersey

Every summer, thousands of people flock to Cape May, New Jersey with high hopes of escaping the heat with some perfect beach weather. The end result is a beach town that is so crowded it’s almost hard to enjoy. Cape May in the winter months bears a much stronger resemblance to the historic town that put it on the map. As the first seaside resort established in the U.S., Cape May is famous for its beautiful collection of Victorian homes. Take a trolley tour around the historic district before being led through a Victorian mansion on foot. Even better, visit around the holidays to see the Christmas lights adorning the historic mansions. For an expansive view of the Delaware Bay, climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May lighthouse, which is open on the weekends during the off-season.

Hilton Head, South Carolina

If you prefer a sunny beach without the sweltering heat, Hilton Head Island is just what the doctor ordered. The South Carolina Lowcountry provides mild temps all winter long with an average high in the low 60s Fahrenheit from December through February. That’s an ideal temperature to stroll along the beach with your dog , paddle through the peaceful lagoon, or go bird watching at Pinckney Island. Since Hilton Head is quieter in the winter, you’ll also be able to navigate the streets easier on your bicycle and you’ll find the golf courses and tennis courts to be much less crowded. The area picks up a bit around mid-March when the island hosts a Wine and Food Festival , a weeklong event featuring tasty bites, tempting libations, and live entertainment.

Marquette, Michigan

The northern beaches of the Great Lakes are often overlooked by beachgoers in the summer months and even more so in the winter. But if a winter wonderland is what you’re after, look no further than Marquette, a remote town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Perched on the shores of Lake Superior, the town’s nearby Presque Isle Park is the perfect place for exploration along the coast. Depending on the snowpack, winter hikers may walk or snowshoe along the park’s trails to witness Superior’s infamous cliffs and icy vistas. Winter enthusiasts can also choose between the region’s abundant snow activities from snowmobiling, single-trail fat biking, and downhill skiing. After the sun sets, keep your eyes peeled for the Northern Lights , which are known to be seen on refreshingly cold evenings up north.

For winter warmth , there’s nowhere better in the US than Key West. Swap cozy fires for sunny days and chilly hikes for lazing on the beach. With average high temperatures lingering in the 70s, you could spend much of the season in bikinis and boardshorts .

Of all Florida’s Keys, West is the farthest flung . Seven square miles of eccentricity and entertainment, its buildings and boats twinkle with festive cheer and warm welcome. 

For beaching, Smathers Beach is popular but nowhere near as lovely as the sands of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park . Linger till day’s end for a spectacular sunset if you can’t face the crowds in Mallory Square .

Or follow a literary theme with a morning swim at South Beach , rumored to be Tennessee Williams’s preferred spot. After, head to Hemingway House for a stroll around his palatial Spanish villa and grounds. Round out the day al fresco at madcap Blue Heaven . Get your fill of classic Caribbean food in the garden where Hemingway once refereed boxing matches . 

Tropical and temperate , Puerto Rico offers a blissfully warm winter vacation just a short hop from the US mainland. With temperatures hovering in the high 70s, its skies are clear , its seas sparkle and its forests bloom .

Kick off a stay in the capital, San Juan – one of the most walkable cities in the Caribbean. The colorful and historic Old Town is a deep well of gorgeous architecture and photo opportunities. It also happens to rub shoulders with some of the most electric and fun beach fronts you’ll find. The undeniable star of which is Isla Verde , the Copacabana of Puerto Rico.

The best beach buzz, however, can be found on the west coast at Rincón . Home to a thriving local and international surf scene , head for Domes Beach for big November waves. For something more sedate, try Steps Beach in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. Spend your days sunning yourself and searching for parrot fish and hawksbill turtles.

It doesn’t have to be hot and sunny for the best US beaches to shine. Nowhere is that more apparent than on the wild shores of Nantucket in winter. A summer favorite of rich society types, as the mercury drops and crowds thin, it adopts a tranquil beauty .

Many of the mainstream facilities close down for the cold season, so beaches are quieter and feel more remote. At aptly named Surfside Beach, surfers dance along heavy winter waves. 

The vast stretch of wildlife refuge that combines Coatue and Coskata beaches is never more alive. Stroll its miles of trails to explore the oak forests and red cedar savannah. Keep an eye out for harbor seals loitering in the dunes and marshes.

On clear days, windswept Madaket Beach witnesses the most spectacular sunsets. Cozy up around a beachside fire , toast some marshmallows and watch another perfect Nantucket winter day pass by. Magic.

Ask a San Diego local and they’ll tell you the city and its beaches are at t heir best in winter . The weather is mild enough to deter all but the year-round swimmers and surfers from dipping a toe in. That means fewer people and more majesty.

Blacks and Torrey Pines are two of the more accessible cliff-backed beaches (though Blacks is still a challenge). They deliver on wild waves and rugged backdrops . Yet not far are the glistening city beaches, equally rich in surf and spectacle.

Rent a beach cruiser and ride the three-mile Ocean Front Walk from North Pacific Beach to South Mission Beach. Stop off along the way to shop its side streets and refuel in its many restaurants and bars. If you’re not too full, ride the beachfront roller coaster at Belmont Park . Take your time and don’t forget to people-watch – it’s like a human zoo of colorful characters.

Winter can be a challenge with kids. Cold and wet weather often makes it hard to get out and cabin fever is something we all dread. Orlando could lay claim to being the best family destination year round , but in winter it really excels. No snowy chills, freezing storms or gloomy skies here.

Blessed with warm Floridian weather, its multitudinous attractions are built with one thing in mind: family fun . That means theme parks and attractions that cater not just to the kids , but also to teens and adults.

Yes, there’s Toy Story Land and Disney World, the Universal Resort and Harry Potter’s Wizarding World . But there are also worlds beyond theme parks and roller coasters. The eye-opening Kennedy Space Center , lively Boxi Park, the nearby Everglades , and for a show, Cirque du Soleil .

Perhaps the best balance is Winter Park . Built for escapees of New England winters (hence the name), it’s a family friendly mix of entertainment and eating. Good shopping and great restaurants, parks and boating lakes, diverse museums and boutique hotels.

Lake Tahoe is a vast family-oriented natural winter wonderland . South or north, by the shore or up a mountain, there’s truly something for everyone whatever your age or interest. (As long as it’s outdoors.)

Some two dozen ski resorts are scattered around the lake. To the south , Heavenly Ski Resort is famed for its vertical drop and diverse runs for all levels. On its opposite side, Northstar is the complete family destination. Epic skiing, snowboarding, sledding and tubing, great ski schools, and some of the best hot chocolate you’ll taste anywhere!

The fun continues at shore level. Not least with an extraordinary road trip around Lake Tahoe’s 72 mile perimeter. Stop off for fishing and boat tours, stone skipping and wildlife watching. Don snow shoes to explore miles of trails and drink in the forest greens and luminous blues of Emerald Bay . 

And if you’re there at season end, the Lake Tahoe Snowfest is a two-week celebration of all things snow. 

The best winter vacations with snow in the US

If you want snow certainty , Mount Rainier is the place to go. Historically, epically snowy , it sees hundreds of inches of the white stuff fall every year. That means the infrastructure is built to handle it, and it’s a fantastic place to indulge in snowbound fun .

There’s something to cater to every snow-based pleasure. Paradise is a great starting point, both for trailheads and summit hikes. Orientate yourself first at the Henry M Jackson Visitor Center before choosing your adventure. Ski, snowboard or horseback ride . Hang out with the reindeer and feed the elks. On weekends, join a free snowshoe hike with a park ranger.

Stay at the historic Paradise Inn , one of the great lodges of the west , for easy access to the trails. For a truly remote, wild winter experience , go winter camping in the northeast of Mount Rainier National Park.

There’s so much snow in Yellowstone National Park come winter that most of its roads are closed. Instead, travel is over the snow on snowmobiles and snowshoes, horse drawn sleighs and skis – undoubtedly more fun .

No visit to Yellowstone is complete without seeing Old Faithful or the Canyon area. Join a snowmobile tour to see the geysers up close. Ensnared in snow yet still steaming ferociously, they’re a magical sight. Don snow shoes and take a trek to any of the Yellowstone waterfalls . Temporarily frozen in time and place by the cold, they make everything feel otherworldly .

If you do want to self drive, there’s one road that stays open all winter. Enter from the north entrance and you can pass through the Lamar Valley . Often busy with buffalo, these hulking furry masses paint quite the contrast to the blanket white landscape. Follow the road all the way to Mammoth Springs to see its gorgeous travertine terraces bathed in snow. When the chill sets in, bathe yourself in the natural outdoor hot springs .

If you’re heading to Colorado, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to the best winter mountain vacations. Aspen and Breckenridge , Beaver Creek and Crested Butte – all epic snow-oriented options. But for the king of mountain resorts , it has to be Vail. 

Despite sitting at the base of Vail Mountain, the town of Vail is still 8,000 feet above sea level . Above it, towering peaks encompass a massive ski resort . More than 200 trails and runs connected by some 30 lifts serve up terrain of every type. On the mountain’s west side, ski the seven legendary Back Bowls in a single day. It’ll likely be the best you’ll ever have on snow.

When it comes to après ski, Vail town is no shrinking violet either. A festive, wintry cluster of high-end hotels and chalets, shops, restaurants and bars. For families, an ice skating rink and kids’ snowmobile track. 

Amid the trails and waterfalls that surround the town of Mammoth Lakes soars an 11,000-foot-plus lava dome mountain . On the slopes running up to Mammoth Mountain’s peak are 3,500 acres of America’s snowiest, funnest skiing and snowboarding.

For quieter trails and the chance to find some back country to yourself, go mid week . But Mammoth is actually best with the crowds . On the weekend, it fills with twentysomething Los Angelites there to ski, snowboard and party. Mountain restaurants spark to life , slopes buzz with ski groups and party goers. The atmosphere is electric but not out of control – it feels almost… Alpine .

To make the most of the area’s supermodel good looks , hop on a gondola . Views over the Sierra Nevada ridgeline, volcanic lakes and Inyo National Forest are crushingly beautiful.

You don't need sunshine to visit the beach. These cold weather stretches of sand are just as majestic. 

Although they are usually packaged as sun, sea and sand, beaches do just fine without the sun part.

There’s no need to let the cold keep you indoors and away from the coastline. Throw caution to the wind – quite literally – by embracing the dramatic dunes, impressive surf and rugged shores of these spectacular beaches that shine – even when the clouds come out. Here are nine beaches from around the world that are perfect in winter and cold weather.

1. Charmouth Beach, Dorset, United Kingdom 

While it may not be the warmest beach to visit in winter, fossil finders will be happy to forget about taking a dip and stay on shore. Located on England’s  Jurassic Coast , Charmouth Beach is famous for its abundance of fossils. If you want to get in on the action, the side west of the river is the best spot to search for prehistoric relics. But remember to keep your fossicking to the stones and rocks on the foreshore – no digging into the cliff face.  

2. Reynisfjara Beach, Vik, Iceland

White sand beaches are old news; when it comes to dramatic coastlines, the black basalt landscape at Reynisfjara wins hands down, any day. The beach can be accessed by foot from Iceland ’s southernmost town, Vik, a  2½-hour drive from  Reykjavík . Once there you can wander among some of the world’s most majestic and astonishing natural rock formations on jet-black sand. 

Adding to the already ghostly atmosphere, Reynisfjara Beach comes with its own folk tale. Legend has it that trolls pulled a ship to land here but, in a stroke of bad luck, daylight turned them to stone in the form of imposing sea stacks.

On a happier note, the beach is also home to a puffin colony. There are viewing platforms, but you’re equally as likely to spot the birds nesting, flying or bobbing on the waves.

3. Plage de la Conche des Baleines, Île de Ré, France

This gorgeous and tiny island off France’s Atlantic coast is a picture-perfect vision of southern France, complete with whitewashed buildings, terracotta roofs and a relaxed atmosphere. In July and August, the place is packed and it’s hard to find somewhere to stay.

Luckily, combing the coastline for seashells is just as beautiful in winter as it is in summer – and far less busy. There are bikes for hire in the villages, which can see you winding along quiet cycle paths through pine groves on the edge of the sand. And, most importantly, the legendary sunsets are a spectacular sight all year round.  

4. Inchydoney Beach, West Cork, Ireland

Ireland’s coastline is all about rugged rock formations – relentless waves crashing upon jagged boulders and rocky outcrops provide the dramatic setting for world-renowned wonders like Skellig Michael and the Giant’s Causeway. But why not go against the grain, and discover the country’s equally breathtaking, and arguably more scenic, sandy stretches?

Looking out bravely toward the Atlantic, Inchydoney is a beach that  Cork is proud of. The smooth, vast curve of sand on Inchydoney Island is connected to the land by two grassy causeways. Come here in autumn or winter for an umbrella-in-hand day out to explore rock pools with the family or, if you’re feeling brave, to surf.

Before you get completely soaked, you’ve got a well-stocked selection of pubs to take shelter in over at neighboring Clonakilty, including famed  De Barra’s Folk Club , with hearty pints and local trad sessions (traditional music sessions) to warm the cockles.

5. Kvalvika Beach, Lofoten Islands, Norway

Arrive at Kvalvika Beach in the Lofoten Islands and you’ll feel like you’ve reached the end of the earth. But you’ll certainly have to put the work in to relish the feeling – this remote spot is only accessible via a 2.5-mile (4km) hike over 543m-high Ryten Mountain. Most astounding is the contrast of the sheer sea cliffs against the turquoise waters. You’ve walked miles, whipped by the elements, but after that first glimpse of ocean, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the tropics.

Several hikes circle the mountain and its peak, and it’s worth climbing for the view alone. You’ll pass occasional sheep grazing against a panoramic backdrop of cliffs that appear to slide into the icy Norwegian Sea. The trail can be wet and slippery, so make sure you’re kitted out correctly. Set up camp anywhere you fancy along the green grassy ridges, wait for the sun to go down and, if luck is on your side, catch a glimpse of the  aurora borealis  (northern lights) streaking across the night sky.

6. Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

Okay, this one might be a sly addition. But Hot Water Beach, located on the far reaches of New Zealand ’s paradisiacal Coromandel Peninsula , is one of the very few places where you can sink into natural hot pools in the sand even when it’s chilly. Geothermal activity means the water underneath is still warm even when it’s below 59ºF (15ºC) outside. While a free, homemade hot tub on the beach isn’t likely to be your little secret, the best part about this spot for cold-weather enthusiasts is that chillier days usually mean fewer crowds.

Don a swimsuit, bring a spade and dig yourself a personal hot pool in the sand. The water can reach around 140ºF (60ºC), so bear in mind that if you visit in winter your surrounding environs will seem much colder. Make sure you check the tide charts too – you won’t want the sea rushing in mid-spa, although it can be refreshing to feel the whip of cold air and ocean spray at a safe distance. Sink into your steaming hot tub and watch the powerful surf from afar.

7. Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA

If you want moody and atmospheric, this is it. For a beach that sits on the US’s Pacific Coast, it sure does buck sun-kissed, palm-fringed expectations. The Beaver State’s Cannon Beach is home to Haystack Rock , a giant formation that sticks out like a sore thumb along a distinctly misty coastline. It’s an optimal choice for dog walking and reflective strolls as it does get chilly, even in the summer, so you’ll want to keep moving.

Want a dash of the Wild West with your waterfront wanderings? Throw in some adventure and saddle up. There’s no better way to experience the Oregon coastline than on horseback, and nearby riding schools offer both daytime and sunset rides. The town of Cannon Beach itself is as charming as can be, and large chains have been prevented from opening here to preserve its quaintness.

8. Cox Bay Beach, Tofino, Canada

You won’t have to look far to find the ideal cold-weather beach in Tofino , a small westerly town on Vancouver Island . The stormy weather here is a genuine tourist attraction – a favorite pastime in Tofino is storm watching. So which beach is best for the thunder-hungry visitor? Chesterman might be Tofino’s most popular, but Cox Bay will cater to your windy and wild beach needs. 

With panoramic views of the stormy Pacific Ocean and driftwood dotting the white sands, a stroll down Cox Bay takes you along a picturesque, forest-adjacent boardwalk. It’s also a great spot for fairly experienced surfers – when the waves surrounding Tofino are big, you’ll find them even bigger at Cox Bay.

During a “storm watch period,” hole up in one of the storm-proof hotels and restaurants, such as Long Beach Lodge or Cox Bay Beach Resort , that line the shorefront. Keep warm and catch lightning shows from your window, or witness those surfing the huge swells from a hot tub overlooking the beach.

9. Haeundae Beach, Busan, South Korea

Busan ’s Haeundae Beach is a hotspot on humid summer days, and still a huge draw in the cooler winter months. There’s also plenty to see nearby. In winter a good selection of eateries remain open, serving up everything from sashimi to Korean fried chicken. 

Don’t forget to swing by the food markets, too – at Haeundae Market you can eat your fill of delicious mandu (Korean dumplings) and gimbap (nori-wrapped sushi), or a warming spicy red chili soup.

13 Great Beaches for Winter Sun

Warm up this winter on some of the world’s best stretches of sand, from close-to-home shores to more exotic beach destinations around the globe..

As winter temperatures drop and daylight hours shorten, it’s natural to start craving warmer climes. Luckily, those in need of a vitamin D boost have their pick of a whole host of fantastic beach destinations that either remain blissfully warm and sunny year-round or are currently in the throes of a Southern Hemisphere summer. Here, 13 of the world’s beaches that are particularly lovely from December through February.

Benguerra Island

Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

The second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, off the coast of Mozambique, Benguerra Island is part of a national marine reserve where you’ll regularly encounter tiger sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, and Africa’s last viable population of dugongs, cousins of manatees. The biodiversity is so rich—everywhere from its inland lakes and gently sloping sand dunes to its seagrass beds and coral reefs—that the archipelago has been called the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean.

Onshore, expect a laid-back vibe at resorts like Kisawa Sanctuary , which made it onto our 2022 Stay List of best new hotels in the world. The resort sits on hundreds of acres of beach and coastal forest and features bungalows constructed with local timber and decorated with 3D printing, a method also used to create artificial coral for reef restoration in the area. While it’s tempting to sit back and enjoy the powdery sand here, Kisawa also partners with the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies , a nonprofit that offers guests the chance to help with research projects like tagging sharks and marlins.

Sand volleyball is unsurprisingly a popular sport on Moreton Island, one of the biggest sand islands in the world.

Moreton Island

Queensland, Australia

Queensland is famed for its Great Barrier Reef, but right in Brisbane’s own backyard is an island destination that’s much more easily accessible and highly underrated: Moreton Island. Reachable by a 75-minute ferry ride from the city, it is the third-largest sand island in the world, a former whaling station that has been reimagined as an adventure destination and national park. It’s home to the highest coastal sand dune in the world, at more than 900 feet (sand-tobogganing down it is fun but not for the faint of heart), and ringed with beaches that are calm on the western side and surfable on the east.

By day, you can snorkel or “sea scooter” among the Tangalooma Wrecks, a collection of 15 sunken vessels that attract sea turtles, dugongs, and bottom-dwelling wobbegong sharks. By night, you can paddle over the wrecks in an illuminated kayak or wade out into the surf to hand-feed a habituated pod of wild dolphins. If you’re staying overnight at the Tangalooma Island Resort , stop into one of the beachside restaurants and look for Moreton Bay bugs, a species of slipper lobster that is a local favorite.

Rocky and rugged Punta Cometa is the southernmost point in the state of Oaxaca.

Oaxaca, Mexico

With beach-friendly temperatures all year, Mexico’s coast attracts its fair share of visitors in the winter. Avoid the crowds by going to the small coastal town of Mazunte, where three sandy beaches—Mermejita, Rinconcito, and San Agustinillo—are backed by thatched shacks selling seafood and cocktails.

This area is home to the National Mexican Turtle Center , where there’s an aquarium open to the public and baby turtles are released into the ocean. If you feel like getting active, hike out to the wild Punta Cometa headland for views back along the sand and a number of secluded coves. The rugged cape is Oaxaca’s southernmost point, and it’s a favorite place for watching migrating whales from clifftops or taking in the sunset.

Get two vacations in one at Manuel Antonio Beach, where the sands border a national park.

Manuel Antonio Beach

Manuel Antonio Beach sits on the fringes of an eponymous protected forest, which is home to some of the country’s most exciting wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, armadillos, and toucans. White-sand beaches and rugged headlands butt up against crystal-blue waters, ideal for snorkeling and kayaking.

Don’t miss a sundowner at the nearby El Avión bar. It’s set inside an old Fairchild C-123 cargo plane 500 feet high in the hills beyond the beach, and it has the best views out across the forest toward the glittering coastline. It’s dry season in this part of Costa Rica from December through April—prime time for days lounging on the sands.

Hulopoʻe Beach is a favorite for its teeming tide pools and charismatic spinner dolphins.

Hulopo ʻ e Beach

Lānaʻi, hawai‘i.

A perfect swimming beach on the southern coast of Lānaʻi , Hulopoʻe is a pretty patch of yellow sand backed by leafy vegetation and flanked by rocky outcrops. When the tide is out, you’ll often find small hermit crabs, sea stars, limpets, and tiny fish in the pools that form between the volcanic rocks onshore. (It’s a protected site, so you’re not allowed to take any natural souvenirs with you.)

Come December, the waves are ideal for surfing or bodyboarding and the weather is dry and warm. The nearby Four Seasons Resort is the place to go for lunch, with several restaurants, including a Nobu outpost and the poolside Malibu Farm, which overlooks the bay.

Situated north of Dubai, less-visited Ras Al Khaimah is home to several golden-sand beaches with shells.

Ras Al Khaimah

United arab emirates.

Skip the glitzy, expensive beaches of Dubai and head north to Ras Al Khaimah, a little-visited emirate that’s home to several beaches with golden sand and shells; it also has a slightly cooler climate than its neighbors, averaging 77 degrees throughout January.

You’ll find all-out luxury at the Waldorf Astoria , which has its own private beach. For something completely different, you can also camp on any of the public stretches of sand. For another kind of adventure, drive to the top of Jebel Jais, a mountain that spans the border of Ras Al Khaimah and Oman and includes the highest point in the United Arab Emirates. On a clear day, from up here in the Al Hajar mountains, you’ll often have views out to the Persian Gulf.

The beaches on Harbour Island get their pinkish hue from the shells of microscopic organisms called foraminifera.

Pink Sands Beach

The sand at this beach on the eastern side of Harbour Island really is a striking pastel shade of pink, thanks to the remains of the foraminifera, microscopic organisms that wash up on the shore.

Temperatures in December and January average a comfortable 78 degrees, and the sand remains cool underfoot. Minimal rainfall at this time of year makes it perfect for long days spent sunbathing or partaking in more active pursuits, including horseback riding in the surf or snorkeling around nearby Man Island, which reveals an underwater world of octopuses and sea cucumbers.

Ningaloo Reef

It’s the height of summer in Australia from December through February, but the country’s west coast sees far fewer travelers gracing its shores than the east does. Ningaloo is the highlight of this wild coastline, with a thriving coral reef just offshore that’s ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Stay at the luxury campsite Sal Salis to the north, and spend your days lounging on the sand or out in the water. Don’t miss the opportunity to see turtle hatchlings wend their way into the surf from January through March. Farther inland, you can explore the Outback wilderness on guided walks.

The Kenyan coast is known for its traditional Swahili dhow sailboats, which fishermen use to navigate through the reefs.

Combine a winter sun-and-beach break with an unforgettable wildlife experience at Diani Beach . This slice of white sand, backed by palms and lapped by Indian Ocean waves, sees temperatures hover around the mid-80s throughout December and January. Adding to the picturesque setting are the camels strolling along the surf, the sand bars that emerge from the brilliant turquoise water at low tide, and the kitesurfers dotting the horizon.

Diani is also home to Colobus Conservation , where you can join a primate eco-tour to meet a habituated troop of vulnerable Angolan colobus monkeys as well as the cheeky Sykes’ and vervet monkeys that call these coastal forests home.

November through March is a great time to visit Sri Lanka , but it can get crowded. Arugam Bay, on the southeast coast, is a far cry from the busier resorts on this teardrop-shaped island’s west side, which are packed at this time of year.

With its chilled, hammock-swinging vibe, excellent beachfront restaurants (don’t pass up the fish curries at Ranga’s Beach Hut ), and superb surf, Arugam Bay is a wonderful place to get a taste of true Indian Ocean life. For true seclusion, visit Elephant Rock, a small outcrop at the edge of a cove that’s beloved by beginner surfers; there’s no road access here, so you’ll have to take a tuk-tuk and then either walk, wade, or scramble over the rocks. The sunset views are very much worth the effort.

Come nightfall, the waters off Vaadhoo Beach erupt in a bioluminescent display.

The Maldives is famous for its perfect beaches, all wispy white sands and light blue waters. But after the sun sets, some of the archipelago’s beaches take on a rather different look.

Vaadhoo Island is renowned for its nocturnal show of bioluminescent plankton, which means you can spend your days here enjoying the winter sun, sea, and sand and be mesmerized at night when the waves glow bright blue as they crash onto the shore. In these parts, that bioluminescent display is nicknamed the “Sea of Stars” for the way it mimics the brilliance of the night sky above.

With highs regularly hitting 71 degrees in December and January, Clearwater Beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast offers all the sunshine and spectacularly white sand you could want, with the bonus of big-city vibes and lots of craft beer. More than 35 small-scale breweries in Clearwater and St. Petersburg make a fantastic ale trail .

Don’t miss a day out on the water spotting dolphins, or try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Sundowners are essential here: The westward-facing beach’s location on the Gulf of Mexico means that the fiery sunsets here are the stuff of dreams.

In the middle of Senegal’s Petite Côte, Saly is a wonderful destination for families.

The 60-plus-mile-long stretch of white sand that makes up Senegal’s Petite Côte is blissfully quiet. Here, you’ll find small fishing towns and villages where Portuguese and French influences mix with the energetic West African culture, plus low-key holiday resorts popular with Europeans in the summer.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Winter typically conjures images of cold, snowy days perhaps curled up on the couch at home by a fireplace. But, winter is one of the best times to get out and travel! The United States has some of the best and most diverse destinations for winter travel including warm winter destinations, incredible National Parks, towns for snow sports, places with amazing natural winter phenomena, and those where celebrating December holidays can be a blast!

Warm Winter Destinations in the US

1. maui, hawai’i.

Maui makes for the perfect choice for a winter US vacation. The weather is wonderful for exploring outdoors, it’s whale watching season, and ocean temperatures are warm around 70 degrees, allowing you to swim and snorkel in the depths of winter.

Whale watching is definitely one of the top things to do in Maui in the winter. January and February are considered the best months of the year to see whales in the waters around Maui.

If you enjoy hiking, one of the  best things to do in Haleakala National Park  is hit the trails. The Pipiwai Trail takes you through the lush rainforest on the east side of Maui, while the Sliding Sands Trail takes you into the heart of the crater for a thrilling experience.

Spending time at the beach is one of the best aspects of visiting Maui in the winter, and there are so many gorgeous beaches in Maui that you’ll be spoiled for choice on where to spread out that beach towel to soak in the sun!

Wailea in South Maui is an excellent choice for a base, with lots of resorts and restaurants. There are many beaches nearby as well. Try the Aston Maui Hill , which offers suites with kitchens. It’s walking distance to shopping and dining.

Kahului is the airport on Maui, and it is about a 30-minute drive to the hotel from the airport. Ideally, you would want to rent a car so you have flexibility for exploring the island.

2. San Diego, California

If you are looking for a comparatively warmer destination to retreat to during the winter season, a great place to visit is San Diego. During the winter months, the city has an average high temperature of 66°F and an average low temperature of 50°F, making it warm enough that you’ll likely only need a light jacket or sweater!

In addition, there are plenty of things to do around the city. For example, those who enjoy surfing can anticipate strong winter swells that make the coast come alive! Or, if you want time away from the beach, you can head over to Balboa Park. There are several museums to walk around and the park hosts events through the winter season, such as the festive December Nights event.

Lastly, a fun thing to do no matter the season is to  explore San Diego’s flourishing foodie scene ! You’ll find a wide array of cuisines that can cater to anyone’s tastes.

For those ready to make their way to San Diego, you can either drive directly to the city or fly into the San Diego International Airport. And for a place to stay, a great option is the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina . The 4-star hotel offers waterfront views and is conveniently located in downtown San Diego near the airport.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a magical place to experience winter. During this season, you’ll see its unique charm and enjoy it with milder weather and fewer crowds. It is the perfect time to explore its vibrant neighborhoods and enjoy Creole cuisine .

An activity we recommend taking is a  plantation tour . We love the beautiful architecture that is often accompanied by era-period dress. You can also explore the grounds at your own pace and take in the beauty of the grand oaks and gardens.

You cannot leave New Orleans without visiting the historic Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral. You’ll often see local artists and musicians here. If you’re looking for a beautiful place to enjoy a delicious beignet, head over to Cafe Beignet on Decatur Street. You will love the ambiance of this cafe, often accompanied by live music.

If you want an authentic stay, consider the historic French Quarter. There are many boutique accommodations like Maison Dupuy or the quaint Balcony Guest House Bed and Breakfast . You will find these to be charming and comforting. Alternatively, consider a haunted stay in New Orleans .

Traveling to New Orleans is pretty convenient. The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is approximately a 25-minute drive from the French Quarter. In terms of weather, the averages are 47°F (low) and 64°F (high) during the winter. Consider packing a thick sweater or light jacket to enjoy exploring the area.

4. Charleston, South Carolina

The beautiful and charming colonial port city of Charleston, South Carolina makes for a terrific choice among the best winter destinations in the US!

The reason Charleston makes for one of the best winter destinations in the US is its very mild winter. While it usually isn’t warm enough to properly enjoy the  beaches near Charleston  during the winter time, it’s not uncommon to have days of short sleeve weather along South Carolina’s coast during the winter months.

Charleston is especially great for enjoying that mild cooler weather. The historic downtown area is very walkable and is bursting with historic charm. Checking out the boutique shops along King Street as well as the artisan goods at the old City Market are musts. Stroll down to the waterfront battery to take in the harbor and Fort Sumter in the distance. Be sure to swing by the iconic Rainbow Row of colorful historic buildings along East Bay Street as well.

Throughout the historic peninsula you’ll find plenty of great cafes and restaurants. Be sure to try some She Crab Soup and Shrimp and Grits, two Charleston favorites while here.

The South Carolina Aquarium is very well done and is next to one of the locations to take ferry boats to tour Fort Sumter. Boats to Fort Sumter also leave from Patriot’s Point, where the historic battleship USS Yorktown is open to visitors.

It’s best to stay downtown for easy walking around Charleston. The Dewberry and Charleston Place are terrific and in great locations. For something a little less upscale, the Francis Marion is also in a lovely location. Finally, staying in a historic home like Zero George can be a great way to feel fully immersed in Charleston’s charm.

Charleston has a small airport with flights connecting from some major cities. Columbia, South Carolina is less than 2 hours away, and Charlotte, North Carolina, the closest larger city, is about 3 hours away by car. From December to February average low temperatures range from 38 to 44 degrees and average highs from 60 to 64, with January being the coldest month.

5. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is a great winter destination and is one of the best places to visit in the winter in the USA. Firstly, winter is off-season. Therefore, you won’t have to deal with large crowds and can find great deals on flights and hotels. 

Secondly, winter means pleasant, mild weather that makes this the perfect time to walk through stunning local green spaces like Forsyth Park. So, expect daily highs between 61 F and 65 F and daily lows between 41 F and 45 F. Also be sure to pack a light raincoat since the city experiences between 5 and 6 days of rain per month. 

So, if you’d like to enjoy winter in Savannah then be sure to fly into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. From here you can either drive twenty minutes into the city or take the 100X bus to the Downtown and Historic District. Once there, enjoy fun seasonal events like the Savannah Christmas Market, Mountainfilm Savannah, the Savannah Book Festival, and the Savannah Black Heritage Festival. 

You can also explore the Davenport House Museum and do a fun day trip to Tybee Island too.

Then, after a fun day of exploring, spend the night at the Hamilton-Turner Inn . It’s a stunning bed and breakfast that is situated inside a historic mansion from 1873. Highlights include complimentary breakfast as well as afternoon refreshments and an evening happy hour that easily makes this one of the best places to stay in Savannah .

6. Miami, Florida

Miami in winter is packed with festivals, concerts, and fun on the beach. The city also offers a wide variety of cuisines and a unique atmosphere.

Head to Miami Beach to take in the views and the sunshine. The beaches are less crowded during winter and you can sunbathe without being bothered. Winter is surprisingly a great time to hit the waves if you are keen on surfing. 

There are various festivals that you can attend in winter. Three Points Festival and the South Beach Wine and Food Festival are some of the best ones. 

Christmas in Miami is absolutely enchanting and full of entertainment. You can visit Santa’s Enchanted Forest for a fun adventure as opens only during Christmas or witness South Florida’s tallest Christmas tree while enjoying tasty treats.

The Night Garden is a winter speciality that runs for several months in winter. It has lighting displays, illuminated mazes, shows, and massive holograms for a once-in-a-lifetime dream experience.

Regardless of the season, the Miami art scene is worth exploring. However, the winter temperatures make it quite effortless to do. Wynwood Walls is home to the largest collection of colorful murals in the world. It holds work from leading artists like Shepard Fairey and Kenny Scharf. The vibrant district has a terrific vibe and a  Miami 2 days itinerary  is just the thing you need to plan your Miami getaway. You can stop in any of the trendy bars and restaurants for a quick meal.

Art Basel is a yearly event that takes place in December. It’s a commercial fair that features the artwork of more than 4,000 artists, both new and established. You can find artwork, paintings, photography, and installations all over the city, including at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The EAST Miami Hotel is a great place to stay as it is located close to the center and offers sea-view rooms.

The best way to reach Miami is to fly. You can book a flight and land at the Miami International Airport. Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and the Everglades are located a car drive away.

The temperature in winter ranges from 64 F to 82 F which is still good for exploring the city.

7. Key West, Florida

Key West is a fantastic place to visit in the winter, as northerners go to escape the cold of where they live, and southerners take advantage of great weather. By winter, there’s no chance of hurricanes.

Winter is a lively time in Key West and there’s much to do including hitting the beach, seeing the southernmost point of the USA (get there early for photos to avoid the crowd), and watching entertainment at Mallory Square, especially at sunset. Be sure to take the Conch Train to learn more about the history of the area.

You can’t visit Key West without enjoying the water. Take a boat ride and while it might be tempting, don’t pay for snorkeling as the waters off the coast aren’t the best for seeing vibrant marine life.

You can also take a ghost tour to learn about Key West’s haunted past. Try key lime pie and bar crawl down Duval Street.

Simonton Court is a great place to stay where they are a beautiful group of cottages available for rent in the heart of Key West. They have one main pool near the breakfast area, that draws visitors to socialize. The property also has several smaller, more quiet pools throughout the property. The cottages are set up differently, allowing you to choose which one works best for your friends or family, if you book early.

Key West is also a popular cruise spot destination. Virgin Voyages , Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line all dock there for the day. This does mean, though, that sometimes the island hosts many day ship tourists. It can get crowded on beaches and near the popular sites. The fun part is, though, that these people will participate in your mid-day bar crawl!

8. Pass-a-Grille, Florida

Pass-A-Grille, Florida  is a laid-back beach town located on the Gulf of Mexico. Its slogan? Paradise at the southernmost end of St. Pete Beach. Since the late 1800s, visitors who took the train to Tampa would detour to Pass-A-Grille. A section of the town was declared a National Historic District in 1989.

Pass-A-Grille may be most famous as the home of the historic Don CeSar Hotel , a palatial pink palace where F. Scott Fitzgerald once lodged.

Today, visitors come to collect shells, walk the boardwalk, fish, surf and swim. Or simply gaze at the sandy white beach and sip a piña colada at the seafood restaurants and “no shirt, no shoes, no problem” beach bars that cluster near the boardwalk, along 8th Avenue.

Consider a self-styled walking tour of the waterfront homes to admire the eclectic architecture. Rent a bike to leisurely wander up and down the streets and along the water. Anglers should head to the Merry Pier to rent fishing gear or reserve a boat tour to Shell Key Preserve. Dedicate a rainy afternoon to visiting the Gulf Beaches Historic Museum to learn about the island’s legacy. Exhibits include hundreds of photos, old-time postcards, and beach memorabilia.

Pass-A-Grille is dog-friendly so bring your leashed pooch for a sunrise walk on the beach. Watch a Florida sunset sink from the rooftop deck of The Hurricane restaurant. A discount airline ticket booked to nearby Tampa International Airport is a lot cheaper than flying to the Caribbean for an island getaway in the winter. You can also get to Pass-a-Grille by driving just 10 miles from St. Petersburg.

The average winter temperatures are 70 degrees F in the day at 59 at night.

9. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico is one of the best places in the US to visit in the winter! This US territory in the Caribbean is the perfect place to escape the winter cold and enjoy some warm tropical weather and mild ocean breezes.

History buffs will love visiting Old San Juan. Some of the  top attractions in Old San Juan  are its incredible Spanish fortresses, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal. Enjoy a stroll along the scenic El Paseo del Morro National Recreational Trail, with the imposing city walls to one side and the sparkling waters of the harbor to the other.

Puerto Rico is known as the rum capital of the world, and is famous for creating the classic cocktail, the piña colada. Savor tasty libations and delicious Puerto Rican specialties such as mofongo on a San Juan food tour or enjoy a distillery tour at Casa BACARDÍ .

If you’re visiting San Juan over the holidays, you’re in for a treat. In Puerto Rico, the holiday season stretches through December into the middle of January. The festive holiday season ends with a multi-day festival, Las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, where the streets of Old San Juan are filled with music and performers!

Fly into San Juan via the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport. The airport is just a 25-minute drive to Old San Juan. Stay at the Hotel El Convento . This 4-star hotel is in a former convent and is conveniently located in the heart of historic San Juan.

December temperatures in San Juan are tropically warm, with average highs of 82°F and average lows of 76°F. December can be a bit rainy though, so be prepared and bring along an umbrella.

10. St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

St. Thomas is one of the best winter destinations in the USA, with its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and warm weather.

St. Thomas boasts a paradise-like climate throughout the year, but the winter months offer a unique charm and allure. Located in California’s desert, you’ll find Joshua Tree National Park. Known for their iconic Dr. Seussian trees, Joshua Tree National Park has much to do and see. Still, you can cover most of the park in just one day as a day trip from Los Angeles or San Diego.

Don’t miss Lost Horse Mine Trail where you’ll see remnants of the mining community that once inhabited the park. At Barker Dam, you’ll find petroglyphs from the Native Americans who lived in the park even before the Western miners took over.

Joshua Tree National Park is also home to Skull Rock, a unique rock formation that looks like a skull. It’s found right off the main road, so you don’t need to hike to see this one. And finally, be sure to visit Chola Cactus Garden, which has plants found only here!

Winter is one of the best times to visit Joshua Tree National Park because the weather is not only tolerable, but it’s pleasant! In summer, the temperatures can get up to 110+ degrees F, but in winter it’s much better at only 63 degrees F on average during the day.

Winter is also a great time for stargazing in the desert!

For accommodation, consider the High Desert Motel , which is closest to the park and has great reviews.

To get to Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs International Airport is closest, but you can also expand your trip by flying into Los Angeles and exploring the city of Angels .

Death Valley is one of the most spectacular US national parks. 

Winter is the best season for visiting Death Valley as the temperatures are suitable for hiking and exploring the hottest place on Earth. To remind you, Death Valley NP is the driest and warmest place in the world. Death Valley holds the record for the highest temperature recorded on our planet – the mind-blowing 134 F (56.7 C)! 

But, the landscapes of Death Valley are dramatic and breathtaking! The sensational scenery of Zabriskie Point, Devil Golf Course, Badwater Basin, Artist Palette, and Racetrack Playa in Death Valley are must-sees in a lifetime.

McCarren International Airport in Las Vegas is the nearest airport to Death Valley.  Visiting Death Valley from Las Vegas  is easy. It takes only 2 hours and 30 min by car to reach Death Valley from Las Vegas.  

There is so much to do and see in Death Valley. Driving along the famous Artist Drive, visiting Devil Golf Course and Badwater Basin, and searching for the mysterious ‘sailing stones’ on Racetrack Playa are obvious must-does. Hiking the Golden Canyon trail and the Twenty Mule Team Canyon trail are also essential activities in winter. Winter is a perfect time for adventures in Death Valley.

The average temperatures in Death Valley in winter go from the mid-60s to the low 70s. There are only a few places to stay within Death Valley NP. The 5-star The Inn at Death Valley is the most iconic hotel in Death Valley. 

So, if you are looking for a top US winter destination, consider visiting Death Valley. Fly to Las Vegas, rent a car at the airport, and head to Death Valley National Park.

13. Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

A visit to Crater Lake is one of the  best things to do in Southern Oregon , and in the winter you’ll find an array of fun activities.  

As the weather cools, this already breathtaking national park turns into a magical winter wonderland as a blanket of snow descends on it. In fact, it is one of the snowiest places in the country, with an average snowfall of 43ft per year which can last into May.

The bright white snow contrasts spectacularly against the vibrant blue of Crater Lake, making for postcard-perfect scenes. It is easily one of the best winter destinations in the US and offers plenty to do. Although with highs of 36°F and lows of 19°F, you’ll want to make sure you wrap up well!

Take advantage of the free ranger-led snowshoeing hikes within the park. This activity takes 2 hours and snowshoes are provided, however, you will need to book in advance to secure your spot.

The park is also a great place for a range of other winter activities including sledding, snowmobiling, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding.  

No matter what time of year you visit, be sure to explore Rim Drive and take in the views of Wizard Island perched in the middle of the lake.

From mid-Oct to late May there are no lodges or campgrounds open within the park. However, backcountry camping with a permit is an option for the adventurous!  For those that prefer a roof over their heads, the closest lodging can be from in Fort Klamath at Crater Lake Resort . 

In the winter, only the south entrance of Crater Lake is open and can only be reached by car or tour, there are no public transport options. The roads are regularly plowed and remain open year-round. However, they may close temporarily during severe weather so be sure to check current conditions on the NPS website.

14. Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park on Washington’s remote Olympic Peninsula is a great place to visit during the winter months. Like many national parks in the United States, winter is definitely the off-season here. Which means you can experience the park with little to no crowds, especially in the most popular areas.

One of the best things to do in  Olympic National Park in winter  is visit Hurricane Ridge, a mountainous area where you can try activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow tubing. Another great spot to visit is the Hoh Rainforest, an ethereal temperate rainforest that is magical any time of year – and doesn’t usually see snow, if you want to avoid it.

Lake Crescent, Madison Falls, and Pacific Coast beaches like Rialto Beach and Ruby Beach are also worth a stop. It may be too cold to swim, but winter is the best time to catch storms and big tides along the Olympic coast.

For a winter trip, the Olympic Lodge in Port Angeles, Washington is a great place to base yourself. It’s a comfortable mid-range hotel located five minutes from the Hurricane Ridge entrance to Olympic National Park. For access to the Hoh Rainforest and beaches, you’re better off basing yourself in Forks, Washington, at a spot like the  Woodland Inns motel .

The best way to get to Olympic National Park is to rent a car and drive from Seattle. Port Angeles, the gateway to Olympic National Park, is a 2.5-hour drive from Seattle. (Just note that you need snow chains for your tires to drive the Hurricane Ridge Road.)

During the winter, the weather in Olympic National Park varies based on the month and the part of the park you’re in. For example, the Hoh Rainforest is consistently warmer than Hurricane Ridge. During the coldest months, December and January, you can expect lows in the low 30s and highs in the mid-40s Fahrenheit.

15. Glacier National Park, Montana

Montana’s Glacier National Park is easily one of the best winter destinations in the US. Not only can you avoid the crowds of summer, but Glacier National Park is home to a wide array of winter activities that snow bunnies will love. 

To get there, just fly into Glacier Park International Airport and then drive around a half an hour to the park itself. Just be prepared for higher elevation sections of Going to the Sun Road to be closed in Glacier National Park in winter . 

However, the portion of the road that extends from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge is plowed and open year-round. So, while this scenic drive is well worth your time, always check their website before you head out to make sure weather conditions are okay. 

Afterward, try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at Fish Creek, Apgar Lookout, and the Lake McDonald West shore. After all, this park is home to 1,583 square miles of the Rocky Mountains and has upwards of 700 miles of hiking trails that extend all the way to Canada . 

You also cannot leave without seeing the Northern Lights at Lake McDonald since this area offers obstructed views to the north. And for the best chance of seeing the northern lights, look up the Aurora Forecast and make sure there is a KP rating of 5 or more. 

Next, spend the night in the West Glacier Community since there is no winter lodging available inside Glacier National Park. You could then do primitive camping at either Apgar or St. Mary Campgrounds. Otherwise, warm up inside a cozy chalet at Great Northern Resort since the property sits less than 2 miles from the park. You’ll also want to dress warmly since you can expect around twenty days of snow per month, with daily highs of 26 F and daily lows of 14 F.

16. Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Hot Springs National Park is one of the best places to visit in the USA in the winter for a variety of reasons. Of course the best reason is you get to soak in the toasty warm hot springs when it’s chilly outside! Hot Springs National Park is known for its row of historical bathhouses that were most popular from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. People came from all over the country to the bathhouses to soak in their healing waters.

Today, there are only 2 Hot Springs Arkansas bath houses left where you can soak in the hot springs water, the Buckstaff and the Quapaw. Both bath houses are a must-visit when in Hot Springs to see the beautiful architecture of the historical buildings and also experience what it was like to soak in a bathhouse back in the day.

The best place to stay when visiting Hot Springs NP is at the historical  Hotel Hale . The building where the hotel is today used to be one of the bathhouses and is now part of the national park, so you can enjoy the architecture of the building. Each room also has a soaking tub that pipes the hot springs water in your room for your own private soaking experience.

The best way to get to the national park is to fly into Little Rock, Arkansas, rent a car and drive the 1 hour drive to the park. The average temperature in the winter time is around a high of 50°F and low of 33°F.

17. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan

Located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, about an hour east of Marquette (the closest airport), you will find the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.  Pictured Rocks is a spectacular place to visit in winter  as the park is full of winter sporting activities, and there are fewer visitors than at other times of the year.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is known for its stunning sandstone cliffs. In the winter, water goes over the cliffs, freezes, and forms magnificent ice caves and icicles. Exploring these icy formations can be a magical experience. 

The ice formations also turn into an ice climber’s dream. There are beginner classes available for those who want to learn the basics and then try their hand at climbing. 

Hiking trails turn into ski or snowshoeing trails, roads close for snowmobilers to enjoy, and the bay freezes and becomes an ideal location for ice fishing. 

Regardless of the season, the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore waterfalls should be at the top of your activity list. The Munising Falls Visitor Center provides parking for the most accessible winter waterfall.

Temperatures in the winter are usually found with highs in the mid-20s to low 30s and lows in the 15-degree to 24-degree range. The area gets an average of 140 inches of snow a year.

The Roam Inn is a lovely space to stay while in the area. The Inn has 18 large rooms, and the on-site restaurant is a great perk!

19. Aspen, Colorado

If you’re looking for one of the best winter destinations in the US then you can’t beat Aspen, Colorado. After all, this is one of the  best Colorado Mountain towns  for anyone who loves skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, and more. 

Just fly into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport with either United or American Airlines and you’ll be just three miles away from the town of Aspen. You’ll also want to bring lots of warm clothes since daily highs are only 36 (F) while daily lows are 10 (F). 

You’ll also see around 8 days of snow per month. So, be sure to hit the slopes at Snowmass before heading to Maroon Lake to admire the stunning Maroon Bells from afar. Because these trails are hard to tackle in the summer it’s not recommended to go hiking here in the winter. However, you can always do a bit of snowshoeing on the 2.5-mile trail at Aspen Center For Environmental Studies before relaxing at the John Denver Sanctuary.  

Finally, after a long day of sightseeing, spend a night relaxing inside one of the luxurious rooms inside the Little Nell . It’s an amazing, five-star property with log fireplaces and private balconies. Plus, you get ski-in and ski-out access to the Silver Queen Gondola and can use an awesome ski concierge to warm your boots and to tell you where to find the best powder. 20. Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs, CO is one of the best winter destinations in the US because of their world-class snow sports, adorable downtown, and the ample things to do for people who don’t want to ski or snowboard.

The snow is so light and fluffy that they’ve trademarked the term Champagne Powder to describe it. You won’t find a better place to ski or board and since it’s one of the furthest resorts from Denver, it doesn’t get the crowds that some of the other resorts do.

That’s not to say it doesn’t get crowds on the weekends because it does, but during the week there is plenty of room to spread out.

If you aren’t into boarding then you can also go snowshoeing, tubing, snowmobiling, and so much more. There are many cute shops located downtown as well as great restaurants and coffee shops.

After a day exploring, you’ll want to check out the  breweries in Steamboat Springs  too. This is Colorado after all!

The Phoenix or Kutuk are both great places to stay as they are within walking distance to slopes. You can either fly into Yampa Valley Regional Airport and take a shuttle to get to Steamboat or fly into Denver and rent a car.

Average temperatures in the winter range from around 5 degrees as the low to about 30 degrees as the high.

21. Park City, Utah

Park City Utah is the ultimate winter destination in the western United States. As a former (and potentially future) host of the Winter Olympic Games, the world-class ski resorts of Park City are just one reason to visit Park City in winter. This charming former mining town is perfectly positioned to welcome travelers, just 30 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport.

Despite having the “best snow on earth” Park City has relatively mild winters for a ski town, with average highs in the 30s and lows in the teens throughout the winter. The 22/23 ski season saw over 600 inches of snow!

Even if you don’t ski, there are plenty of  Park City winter activities  to explore. Some of the best winter activities include ice skating, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sleigh rides.

Of course, the après-ski scene is not to be missed. Whether you prefer to pop bottles of champagne or roast s’mores slope-side, Park City has fantastic restaurants and lounges. The St. Regis Deer Valley is a gorgeous ski-in ski-out property with the hottest après scene on the mountain and a year-round outdoor pool right on the slopes of Deer Valley.

22. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole is renowned as one of the best winter destinations in the United States, with its beautiful mountain scenery, abundance of snow sports, and unique winter events. 

One of the main attractions of Jackson Hole in winter is its proximity to the epic slopes of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, one of the best places to ski and snowboard in the world. The resort boasts challenging terrain, deep powder, and incredible views of the Teton Mountain Range.

If you’re looking for something a little less extreme, snowshoeing is also popular in the area. Other outdoor activities like tubing and ice skating are also available.

Winter temperatures in Jackson range from 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit in the daytime, while the average low is between 0 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. These chilly temperatures create the perfect conditions for winter activities for almost half the year, from November until the end of April. 

Getting to Jackson Hole is relatively easy if you have your own transportation, as the destination is within driving distance of Salt Lake City. Alternatively, the Jackson Hole Airport is the nearest airport, with several direct flights from major cities in the United States.

23. grand forks, north dakota.

Grand Forks, North Dakota is one of the best destinations to visit in winter in the United States. 

Not only does the scenic city have a lot of winter sports to offer, but it also boasts several other highlights. 

Grand Forks is located in North Dakota, right on the border with Minnesota. Half of the town (called East Grand Forks) is located in Minnesota. 

Grand Forks has a small regional airport where the next bigger city with an airport is Fargo. From the regional airport, it is only a 10-minute drive to the city center. 

The best thing to do in  Grand Forks in winter  is to watch for Northern Lights and Sun Halos. The Northern Lights are visible on many nights per year, so make sure to check the local weather forecast. Sun halos are also a common occurrence in Grand Forks in winter, which is a beautiful natural phenomenon where a halo of light appears around the sun.

Other nice things to do are watch a hockey game in their spectacular arena or try the famous fried pickles.

The temperatures are icy cold in winter -10 F to 20 F, so it is important to book a hotel with a cozy indoor spa. The Springhill Suites by Marriott in Grand Forks is a great choice.

24.Fairbanks, Alaska

Chasing the magical northern lights is probably on many traveler’s bucket lists and it is one of the most amazing natural phenomena on earth. In North America,  Fairbanks, Alaska  is one of the best places to see the lights because of its weather, geographic location, and infrastructure. The official aurora season in Alaska begins as early as August every year to April in the following year – making it a wonderful destination to visit in winter in the United States.

Fairbanks is located at 65 degrees north latitude in the interior region of Alaska, and it is the second-largest city in the state. The city has a long and cold winter, a low amount of precipitation, and zero light pollution. Therefore, the chance of viewing the northern lights in Fairbanks is higher than 90%.

There are a couple of ways to get to Fairbanks, the city is served by the Fairbanks Airport with frequent domestic flights within Alaska, and seasonal direct flights from major cities like Chicago, Seattle, and Minneapolis. Driving from Anchorage takes about 6 hours. 25. leavenworth, washington.

If a winter wonderland is what you’re in search of then look no further than Leavenworth, Washington. Nestled in the Cascade mountains, it’s a great US winter destination choice!

The perfect little snow globe Bavarian village,  Leavenworth, is especially magical in winter . The entire town is romantically lit from the end of November through the month of February with colorful lights.

When it comes to things to do, there’s something for everyone in Leavenworth. Snow sports like skiing, snowmobiling, and snow tubing are popular pastimes but the highlight of any trip is the Leavenworth Reindeer farm! The farm is open all year long but especially fun around the Christmas season. Take a horse drawn carriage ride through town, or head outside of town to experience a horse drawn sleigh ride with a mountain backdrop. Explore the snowy riverside park, as you follow trails along the crystal-clear icy waters of the Wenatchee River.

At the end of a long day of play, belly up to one of the fire pit tables at the Bavarian Beer Garden and order yourself a German beer and a pretzel or brat!

There’s plenty of fluffy snow in Leavenworth in winter and average high temperatures are 37 degrees F during the day, and it dips down below freezing at night. Situated on the Wenatchee River, I recommend the Alpine Rivers Inn for the views alone!

The nearest airport to Leavenworth is Seattle Sea-Tac airport. Amtrak offers train service from Seattle, or you can schedule a shuttle with Wenatchee Valley Shuttle.

26. Solvang, California

Solvang  is a lovely town in the Santa Ynez Valley of Central California, close to the beaches of Santa Barbara and a perfect USA winter getaway for families. Winter in Solvang has mild weather from the mid-40s to the mid-60s Fahrenheit.

Check out these all-season attractions in Solvang, including the Hans Christian Andersen Statue, Round Tower on Alisal Road, Little Mermaid Statue on Mission River Road and the Old Stock Exchange. Snap some photos with the windmills of Solvang, another popular all-time attraction, depicts Danish influence. Stroll through downtown to witness gorgeous Danish architecture and be sure to visit Mission Santa Inés, one of the 21 missions in California.

Attend the Julefest and Solvang Christmas Parade during the winter months, from the end of November to mid-January.

The undulated rolling hills and vineyards will greet you when you go on a drive along the Santa Ynez Valley. Try wine tasting in the Rideau Vineyard or the Rusack Vineyards.

Take day trips to Mount Baldy or the San Bernardino Mountain region, about 3 hours drive from Solvang, for skiing and other snow activities.

The nearest big city with an airport close to Solvang is Santa Barbara, 35 miles away.  You can take a flight to Santa Barbara and rent a car from there. In this area, another incredible thing to do is to drive along the panoramic California Highway 154.

Solvang is about 112 miles from Los Angeles , 250 miles from San Diego , and 300 miles South of San Francisco.

For places to stay, check out Hotel Corque , which is a 5-minute walk from Old Mission Santa Ines and has well-equipped rooms with a multi-cuisine restaurant. Alternatively, stay at Mirabelle Inn & Restaurant   located in Downtown Solvang and just 1 hour from the nearby Local Cachuma Recreation area.

27. Austin, Texas

Austin TX is a great place to visit year round, but winter in Austin can feel like a trifecta of fewer visitors, a plethora of festive options, and mild weather (highs in the low-mid 60s and lows in the low-mid 40s).  

December offers merrymaking in full force. A quintessential Austin experience is going to Zilker Park, just south of downtown, and spinning under the Zilker Tree – created by carefully strung light from one of the historic moontowers and visiting the Trail of Lights. Visiting the Zilker Tree is free, but there is an entry fee for the Trail of Lights. There is the ability to purchase a reserved entry time to the Trail of Lights so it can be enjoyed before opening to the public.

Just west of downtown and along the shores of Lake Austin, Mozart’s Coffee Roasters hosts a wonderful outdoor light display choreographed to holiday music. There is a free standing room only option for enjoying the Annual Christmas Light Show as well as the ability to pay to reserve a table.  

All year round, live music can be enjoyed in the “Live Music Capital of the World” – duly named thanks to TV series “Austin City Limits” airing live music performances since 1974. Popular venues like Antone’s in downtown Austin and the legendary Continental Club just south of downtown on S. Congress Ave. offer visitors the chance to enjoy the activity that helped put Austin on the map.

If you love balmy weather, amazing theme parks, and exciting activities then Orlando is easily one of the best places to visit in the USA in winter. In fact, you can avoid the insane crowds of the summer while enjoying daily highs of between 70 F and 84 F and daily lows of between 52 F and 55 F. And since the weather is dry, you’ll love walking around the Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Disney World , the Kennedy Space Center , and the Orlando Tree Trek Adventure Park. 

You could also go on a magical airboat ride through the Everglades before checking out more seasonal events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. It’s a really fun event and a great way to see characters dressed up in holiday-inspired costumes. 29. Chicago, Illinois

You might not think to visit Chicago during winter , but if you’re willing to brave the elements a bit then a winter wonderland awaits you! Despite its chilly reputation this time of year, the city’s snowy streets and festive lights can be quite alluring. 

Chicago’s cultural and culinary scenes are thriving year-round, meaning there’s always plenty to enjoy. In winter months, you can ice skate at Millennium Park, seek warmth and wonder at the Art Institute of Chicago, explore the Christmas markets in downtown or Wrigleyville, and eat like royalty along Randolph street in the West Loop. 

Make your way out to Mindy’s Hot Chocolate in Wicker Park for a mug of hot chocolate topped with a giant homemade marshmallow. Don’t miss classic experiences like visiting the Skydeck at Willis Tower, strolling along the Lakefront Trail, and warming up with a hearty Chicago style deep dish pizza. 

As for accommodations, The Drake Hotel along the Magnificent Mile is a great choice. Chicago is easily accessible by air through O’Hare and Midway airports, with Amtrak and intercity buses providing additional travel options. 

Average winter temperatures range from a high in the mid-30s to lows in the teens or mid-20s, although some days are milder than others. January and February tend to be the coldest months in Chicago.

30. New York City, New York

New York is arguably an incredible place to visit year-round, but NYC during the winter is a little extra special. 

New York City in December  specifically is when you can enjoy all the holiday cheer! From decked-out storefronts and window displays to ice skating under the Rockefeller Christmas Tree and seeing the Rockettes at Radio City. 

And even though it can get quite cold in New York City with temperatures in the 40s, you can easily warm yourself up by visiting one of the famous New York Museums, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or even visit the Summit Observation Deck, which offers incredible views of the Manhattan skyline with floor to ceiling glass windows.

If you do want to enjoy some of the snowy events, you can always take a day trip to one of the near-ish ski mountains, like Mountain Creek, which is about 1.5 hours away. 

A great place to consider staying at when visiting NYC is the iconic Plaza Hotel , which is located overlooking Central Park. Unless you live within driving distance of NYC, the best way to get here is by plane and you can choose between JFK, LGA, or Newark International Airport, which are all conveniently located near Manhattan and offer public transportation.

31. Washington D.C.

Washington, DC is an iconic destination in the United States that is best known as its designation as the capital city. It is also known for famous landmarks such as the White House, the National Mall, and the numerous memorials found throughout the city. 

DC is a great place to visit in the winter as the winters here are not too brutal, crowds are low, and there are a variety of winter-specific events and activities that you can attend during this time.

At Enchant at the Nationals Stadium from November through December you can experience a wonderland of Christmas lights at Nats Stadium. At the end of November each year you can attend the ceremony to light the White House tree, and see it lit up from December through the start of January. When the city does actually get enough snow, the Washington DC Snowball Fight Association holds an annual large-scale fight, when the weather conditions are right. During DC Restaurant Week in mid-January you can try out some of DC’s most exclusive restaurants for a low price.

While you are in the city, be sure not to miss a visit to one of the Smithsonian museums, the Lincoln Memorial, and the nearby Arlington Cemetery. 

The citizenM hotel in Downtown DC is a great hotel option as it is affordable and located near to all the major tourist sites in the city. 

DC is located about midway up the east coast, and easily connected to many of the major cities nearby by train (Amtrak). For those located further out, there are three airport options that can take you to the city, with Reagan National (DCA) being the closest one. 

In the coldest part of winter, the average low is around 30º and the average high is around 44º F.

Other Amazing Places to Visit in Winter in USA

32. seattle, washington.

When planning a winter vacation, consider visiting Seattle, Washington as one of the best winter destinations in the US. Although Seattle is the northernmost city in the continental US, it experiences a shockingly mild winter. The average highs range from 46°F to 52°F throughout the winter months. You’ll likely experience some rain but snow is super rare in the city.

Getting to Seattle is easy as the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is large and is just 15 minutes from downtown. You’ll have no trouble finding flights from all around the country.

This city is incredible year round and winter is just as great of a time to visit. Make sure to visit Pike Place Market to enjoy the food culture of the city. Try dishes from all over the market for the full experience.

If you love coffee, Seattle is the place to be! Warm up from the winter cold by hopping around to some of the country’s best coffee shops. There’s tons of local stops like Storyville Coffee or Seattle Coffee Works. And make sure to see the first Starbucks location and the Starbucks Reserve Roastery while you’re here!

Make sure to explore just outside of the city as well. There are some amazing  winter hikes in Washington  to enjoy like Franklin Falls, Lake Serene and snowshoeing on Mount Rainier!

While you’re here, plan to stay at Hotel Max . A contemporary hotel with super fun decor and in-room fitness amenities like workout videos, weights and yoga mats. A perfect way to get warmed up for those winter hikes!

33. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona tops the list of the best places to visit in the United States in the winter because of its beauty, natural attractions, and smaller crowds. Even in the winter, when it is snowing (yes, it does snow in Sedona), visitors can still hike and explore the panoramic views and breathtaking mountains. 

Regardless of the season, some of the  best things to do in Sedona  include hiking, off-roading, and relaxing at a spa where you can explore Sedona’s mysticism. 

Hiking is a major attraction in Sedona. Many popular hikes do not include significant elevation gain, making them accessible to most hikers. A few popular hikes include Devil’s Bridge, the Airport Mesa Loop, and Boynton Canyon. 

For those with a sense of adventure, head to Broken Arrow in a 4×4 to test your driving skills on steep stairs, the slide, and mushroom and submarine rocks. For those without off-road experience, you might start at Schnebly Hill before working up to Broken Arrow. At the end of the day, wind down at a day spa and indulge in a massage or try a special treatment designed to enhance your vortex experience. 

Some of these activities can be done at or close to the Enchantment Resort . Although pricey, the Enchantment Resort is in a magical location at the back of Boynton Canyon. In addition to enjoying spectacular views, guests of the Enchantment Resort are close to several popular hiking destinations and can make a reservation at the newly renovated spa.

The weather in Sedona can vary significantly by season. In the winter, the morning temperatures might be in the 30s but warm up to the 60s. In the summer, the temperature in Sedona can be above 90º Fahrenheit. 

Getting to Sedona generally requires a car. Most people either drive to Sedona or fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and then drive approximately two hours to Sedona.

34. Las Vegas, Nevada

In contrast to its often scorching desert heat, Las Vegas becomes a comfortable winter destination. Checking out Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon is a much more pleasant experience this time of the year. You can also enjoy visiting the Hoover Dam in the cooler and more enjoyable temperatures. 

While the iconic casinos are still something we recommend you explore, you cannot leave the area without indulging in a food tour . Be brave and enjoy the diverse culinary scene . Some of the locations that you will get to explore are something you will only find here.

Las Vegas is known as the Entertainment Capital of the World. A couple of special shows we recommend are the Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil. These shows are one-of-a-kind and spectacular.

Las Vegas is known for some of the most impressive hotels, especially on the strip. For your stay, consider the iconic Bellagio , a symbol of luxury with the treat of its mesmerizing dancing fountain show. If you’re traveling on a budget, you can try out the Golden Nugget Las Vegas Hotel & Casino .

Reaching Las Vegas is quite easy, thanks to McCarran International Airport. As for the weather, you can expect averages of 39°F (low) and 57°F (high) during the winter.

35. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Looking for a unique winter destination? Santa Fe, New Mexico, fills the bill! The winter months are considered the off-season, making it a fantastic time to explore the city without droves of tourists or the heat of summer. Temperatures will be cool with lows in the teens and highs in the 40s. So, if you’re after winter sports and skiing, the Ski Santa Fe resort is less than 45 minutes away.

Santa Fe has its own airport, and from there, it’s just a short 20-minute drive to the historic downtown. Downtown, specifically the Santa Fe Plaza in the heart of town, is where you’ll want to be! Santa Fe holds the distinction of being the nation’s oldest U.S. capital, dating all the way back to 1610. As such, the town is steeped in history. Santa Fe boasts the oldest church in the country, San Miguel Chapel; the oldest continuously occupied building in the US, The Palace of the Governors; and the oldest house in New Mexico all within a few blocks of each other.

The New Mexico capital is perfect for art enthusiasts with notable museums like the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. A number of art galleries line the plaza, and even more can be found at the Canyon Road Art District. 

The plaza is also home to many of the  best restaurants in Santa Fe . Enjoy authentic New Mexican cuisine at The Shed, Palacio Café, and Tia Sophia’s. Of course, you should stay as close to the plaza as possible—that means a room at La Fonda on the Plaza . With the mighty Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi across the street, the views during the day and night are always captivating.

36. Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells can be a winter wonderland as snowfall is common during the winter months, and sometimes you can even see an accumulation of a couple of inches of snow.

Temperatures are between 20 to 30°F, with January being the coldest month of the year. Wisconsin Dells is the perfect destination for a snowy winter getaway with family, as there are activities both inside and out to enjoy!

Families will enjoy the scenic views of snow-covered rock formations and frozen waterfalls, which are great places to take photographs. If you happen to visit in December during the holiday season, you don’t want to miss tree lighting ceremonies, the holiday parade, or special events to embrace the holiday spirit, including decorations and holiday light displays. Outdoor explorers will enjoy visiting Cascade Mountain to enjoy winter sports such as snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating.

The best places to stay in Wisconsin Dells are one of the  Waterpark Hotels  in the area known as the “Waterpark Capital of the World.” Our favorite waterpark hotel is Great Wolf Lodge , as it has an amazing waterpark, themed rooms, an arcade, live shows, and a magi-quest to keep kids engaged for your whole stay. Great Wolf Lodge is the ultimate family accommodation as it is more than just a hotel; it is a family memory you won’t forget. 

If you are looking to visit Wisconsin Dells, then the best airport to fly into is Madison (MSN) Airport, which is only 40 miles away. The best and fastest way to get there is to rent a car as then it only takes an hour. However, a longer bus route option does exist if you want to avoid car rentals.

37. Seneca Lake, New York

Not far from the bustling city of Geneva in the state of New York, Belhurst Castle Winery on Seneca Lake is one of the most spectacular getaways, not only is it a luxury castle-come-hotel, but it is essentially a  winery with lodging . The backdrop is a portrait of tranquil, unspoiled nature where you’ll be able to take scenic walks along the lake in winter. The castle’s grandeur, the lake’s diamond shimmering waters and the region’s vineyard-rich valley makes the place the ultimate vacation spot in winter.

The landscape and vineyards are pretty glorious all year round meaning it’s a great destination no matter when you go, but in winter is when you’ll fine the true meaning of serenity; picture peaceful landscapes, unreal views, warming up by a roasting fire with marshmallows (or s’mores) and of course, the incredible wine tastings.

There are plenty of different walking routes; whether you’re after some gentle walks or challenging hikes, there’s an option for everyone.

Make sure you book onto a guided tour or take part in one of their renowned tasting sessions, where you’ll get to sample the finest beers, craft ciders and incredible sparkling wines. After this, book into the spa or salon for a relaxing massage or facial to complete your vacation on a relaxing note.

Book in advance , this is a popular spot with limited choices for accommodation if you want it in the historic Belhurst Castle.

Temperatures average around 35 degrees where January is the coldest month.

To get to Seneca Lake, you can fly into Finger Lakes Regional Airport or drive 2 hours from Buffalo or 4.5 hours from NYC.

Thankfully, the US is home to over 95,000 miles of shoreline, with 30 states boasting a coast, meaning there are plenty of secret surf and sand spots, whether you’re looking for family beaches , supreme sunset viewing points , dramatic cliffs, or simply a place to connect with nature.

There are plenty of options to choose from, but we’ve narrowed it down to 10 of the best secluded, underrated beach locations in the United States .

From isolated sandy stretches in North Carolina to hidden spots on California ’s rugged coastline and the breathtaking sunsets across Hawaii ’s Polihale Beach sand dunes, each of these would make an unforgettable holiday that’s far from the madding crowd.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

While some beaches trade off their sunshine quota, Cannon Beach in the Pacific Northwest is unique by virtue of being a marvel to visit whatever the weather. This long sandy stretch of coastline is home to the dramatic Haystock Rock, a giant towering rock formation that’s accessible on-foot at low tide. Adjacent stone “needles”, tidalpools and flocks of seabirds combine to make this an atmospheric spot. While a summer stroll is always pleasant, visiting in winter, with crashing waves and brooding skies is an unforgettable experience. Don’t leave without checking out the many art galleries and specialist shops that populate the town.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Outer Banks are a 100-mile plus stretch of barrier islands separating the mainland through a series of sounds and inlets. Home to wild horses, lighthouses and blissfully isolated expanses of sand, it’s the ideal place to seek out a spot away from the crowds. Hit the surf at Cape Hatteras, go fishing at Rodanthe Pier, or scramble up Jockey’s Ridge, the tallest living sandy dune system on the east coast.

Avalon Beach, New Jersey

Don’t be put off by its association with reality TV show Jersey Shore : this Atlantic region is home to 127 miles of sublime coastline, with plenty to interest and inspire. Head to Avalon on the Seven Mile Beach for white-sand beaches perfect for swimming, boating or kayaking, while North Wildwood is home to gentler waters and completely free to visit. Commercial boardwalks with amusements, water parks, shops and restaurants make this an ideal destination for a family break.

Kauaʻi, Hawaii

Hawaii ’s beaches are renowned the world over for their soft, white sands and tropical waters, but KauaÊ»i is best known for its dramatic cliffs, canyons and lush rainforests. Known as the “Garden Isle” for its verdant interior, it’s an ideal destination for trekking and kayaking, as well as being home to some of Hawaii’s most beautiful beaches.

PoÊ»ipÅ« Beach Park is one of KauaÊ»i’s most popular beaches, with a wading pool for younger swimmers and the occasional Hawaiian monk seal appearance, but travellers who really want to escape the crowds should head to the remote Polihale Beach. Located at the end of a dirty road, it’s a whopping 17 miles long, making it the longest stretch of beach in the entire state of Hawaii. Expect giant sand dunes, desert cacti and jaw-dropping sunsets. Polihale is notorious for being a very dangerous beach for swimming, however, so swap the dip for a steady stroll along the sands.

Cape Charles, Virginia

On the National Register of Historic Places, Cape Charles has one of the largest concentrations of turn-of-the-century buildings on the east coast. This quaint Victorian-era town is home to award-winning golf courses, two nature preserves ripe for exploration, and watersports galore, including kayaking, paddleboarding and jet-skiing. Plus, Cape Charles’ soft, sand beach is free to access, with calm and shallow waters making it suitable for waterbabies.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

A 15-minute drive from downtown Corpus Christi is Padre Island, the world’s longest undeveloped barrier island. This conservation area, stretching around 66 miles, is a major migratory bird route and home to 350 different species, with nearly half of all north American migratory bird species passing through here at different times of the year. Explore this charming stretch of coastline by kayak or canoe, watch sea turtles being released, or simply walk along this untouched stretch of coastline. And if the prospect of returning to four walls doesn’t appeal, you can also camp here.

Seal Beach, California

California ’s not short of excellent beaches, but Seal Beach is an underrated gem. This laid-back town south of Los Angeles ’ Long Beach has soft white sand, incredible views from the second longest wooden pier in the state, and a 965-acre wildlife refuge you can visit. It’s also the start (or end) point of the San Gabriel River Trail, a 36-mile long cycle route that’s one of the best traffic-free spots in the valley for biking.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

Skip the crowds at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and take the 40-minute ferry ride to the more secluded Dauphin Island. Known as the “sunset capital of Alabama”, this island is home to seven miles of white-sand beaches, great weather and crystal clear waters. Hike through the ancient maritime forest of Goat Tree Reserve, where you can spot birds including vireos, flycatchers and owls and sign up for a chartered fishing expedition, before feasting on crab and lobster at the acclaimed Skinner’s Seafood.

Wellfleet, Massachusetts

Cape Cod has long been a major draw for visitors on the east coast, but it’s also prone to overcrowding. Wellfleet, meanwhile, is a pretty, small and peaceful town surrounded by coast on both sides and centrally located, meaning it’s easy to travel around if you start to yearn for more action. It’s also famed for its excellent oysters, making it an dream destination for foodies. Head to Mac’s on the Pier for some of the best. And don’t leave without visiting the Wellfleet flea market, the biggest on Cape Cod.

Wildcat Beach, California

Fancy a challenge? Rewards don’t come easy at Wildcat, with visitors required to hike five miles to reach this remote California beach, but it’s more than worth the trek. Short on time? Mountain bike on the Stewart Trail, before cooling off in the Pacific. This peaceful spot is home to seals, striking cliff views and some incredible sunsets. And if you’d prefer to spread the hike over a few days, you can rest your bones at Wildcat Campground. For a more active trip, pack up and hike north up the coastline to discover more secret beaches.
