Welcome to my ultimate guide about whale watching on Big Island in Hawaii! At certain times of year, these gentle giants can often be spotted around Hawaii’s largest island.

If you’ve read this blog before then you’ll know I’m a big fan of whale watching and I’ve actually done it on all of the Hawaiian islands now. The last island to tick off on my list was Big Island!

It is possible to see whales from the shores of Big Island but you won’t get a good view as the whales are far out in the ocean.

That’s why I recommend booking onto a whale watching boat tour as you’ll get an up close view of the whales!

This boat tour actually guarantees a whale sighting so it’s the perfect choice.

But wait, there’s more! In the rest of this article, I’ll reveal all of the exact locations on Big Island where you can see whales.

Here’s the best whale watching tours on Big Island:

I ended up going on the whale watching boat tour from Kona and had the absolute best time!

I managed to see 4 whales which I was really pleased with as I’d heard that Big Island wasn’t that great for whale watching. Turns out it’s epic!!

Can You See Whales From The Shore On Big Island?

It’s definitely possible to see whales from the shore on Big Island if you know where to go.

I did manage to see several whales from the shore (I’ll tell you exactly where later) but as the whales don’t come close to the shore, I didn’t get a great view.

You’ll likely be able to see some splashes in the ocean out in the distance like I did – this is the whales coming up for air.

I’d strongly recommend booking onto a whale watching boat tour if you want to get a good view of the whales.

It’s actually insane how close you can get – there’s literally no other way to get a view of a whale like this…

Booking onto a tour like this one is also one of the only ways you can guarantee a whale sighting.

If you are planning on just watching the whales from a distance along the shore then make sure you bring along a pair of binoculars so you get a better view.

Best Places To See Whales On Big Island

Here are all the exact locations on Big Island where you have a chance of seeing a whale from the shore.

Kohala Coast

In my experience, the best place to go whale watching on Big Island is along the Kohala Coast. 

Sightings of whales on the Kohala Coast are super common. In fact, sightings are 2 – 3 times more likely here than anywhere else on the island.

The Kohala Coast is just the northwestern portion of Big Island. There’s many places along this stretch of coast where you can observe whales in the ocean.

These include Kapa’a Beach Park, Lapakahi State Historical Park, Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Pololu Valley and Holoholokai Beach Park (all discussed below).

Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site

The Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site lies on the northwestern coast of Big Island.

It preserves the ruins of the last ancient Hawaiian temple and is also a popular spot for whale watching. 

I personally really enjoyed exploring the ruins and the fact I saw a couple of whales out in the ocean just made it even more special!

This spot is an excellent site for spotting whales due to it’s elevated views which overlook the Kawaihae Harbor. Just look out for the splashes far out at sea.

You can also often spot reef sharks and dolphins here too.

Lapakahi State Historical Park

Lapakahi State Historical Park is a large area of ruins from an ancient Hawaiian fishing village. It lies within the North Kohala District.

This park is located on the northeastern tip of Big Island and is great for whale watching due to its 100ft elevation! You’ll often see whales just off the shore. 

I managed to spot one within 5 minutes of arriving. That’s a record right!?

Kapa’a Beach Park

Kapa’a Beach Park is a remote beach on Big Island’s northwestern coast. 

This small, quiet, rocky beach provides fantastic views of the shoreline and ocean which is perfect for whale watching.

Whales are commonly spotted here during whale watching season. Binoculars are definitely a must for the best possible view. 

I didn’t have any binoculars with me and I definitely saw a couple of whales but they were so far out at sea so I didn’t get the best view. I did love the serene atmosphere of the beach though.

Pololu Valley

Pololu Valley is one of several valleys found on the east coast of the Kohala Mountain. 

This picturesque gorge features trails and beaches with epic ocean views making it a prime spot for whale watching.

I found that the best place to see whales here was at the Pololu Valley Lookout as you get a great view of the ocean from above. I did manage to see one whale from up here.

Holoholokai Beach Park

Holoholokai Beach Park is a black, lava rock beach located on Big Island’s northwestern shore.

On this beach you can often see whales in the ocean along with other marine life such as dolphins and sea turtles.

I didn’t have time to visit this one unfortunately but it was recommended to me by the guide on my whale watching tour (and he knows a lot about whales so I trust him).

Best Time For Whale Watching

November to April is the official whale watching season on Big Island which makes it the best time to see whales out in the ocean.

Whales begin to arrive at Big Island in late November, with more coming in as the season progresses.

The peak season for whale watching on the island is from January to March, during which sightings are almost guaranteed if you visit the right spots (discussed above).

Towards the end of April, the whales start to leave the island. To summarize, the best months for whale watching on Big Island are displayed in the table below.

If you want to increase your chances of seeing whales whilst whale watching on Big Island, I’d recommended going early in the morning as this is when the whales are most active.

The peak time for whale sightings is around 8am when the numbers are highest.

Another good time to go is late in the afternoon just before sunset. While it is less common, you can sometimes spot whales during the daytime as well.

Every winter, around 12,000 to 18,000 humpback whales travel over 3,500 miles from Alaska to Hawaii to mate, give birth, and raise their calves.

Depending on where the whales are spotted, you might even get a chance to see coastal caves and volcanic lava tubes on this tour! Plus, the boat has a hydrophone on board, which allows you to hear the whales singing underwater. The tour is typically offered at 8:00am and 11:45am – I recommend the earlier one!

This tour gave me a whole new perspective on Humpback whales, Hawaiian history, geology, and so much more! Lasting 3 hours, this is much more than just seeing whales – though I honestly would take this tour if that’s all it was, too.

Meet up with your captain at Honokohau Marina, where you’ll board and take a seat to soak in the gorgeous natural beauty all around you. I loved feeling the fresh sea breeze through my hair while listening to our captain regale us tales about Hawaiian history, Hawaii’s unique geology, and so much more.

They told us about how in the wintertime, Humpback whales make their journey over here to mate and give birth to baby whales! As our captain was also a professional naturalist, we were able to listen to the onboard hydrophone and he “translated” the whale songs for us.

I mean, where else in the world would you be able to have that kind of experience? We not only saw gorgeous whales, but we saw plenty of turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and tons of tropical fish. I know it’s not always the case, but we were even able to see some coastal sea caves, lava tubes, and more.

As our vessel only held a max of 16 passengers, we were able to have more of a customized experience in an intimate setting. Overall, it was a fantastic time that I can’t recommend enough!

Be Patient:

Whales have down times of close to 10 minutes, so if you don’t immediately see them, don’t feel discouraged. If you do see a whale and it disappears, remember which direction it was swimming and follow your line of sight in that direction.

What is the Best Month for Whale Watching on the Big Island?

Various whales can be seen in Kona year round like pilot whales, beaked whales, and melon-headed whales, but none put on quite the show and are as consistent as the seasonal humpback whales.

If you’re looking to go whale watching on the Big Island , you’ll want to do so during the winter months. Whale watching season is between December and March. This is when 10,000-15,000 humpback whales migrate south from feeding in Alaska and they can be seen in great numbers breeding around the Hawaiian Islands.

Whale tours will start when the pods have arrived, usually late November to early December. Tours will stop operating around late March. January and February offer the best months for whale watching as this is peak season.

The reason whale watching cruises do not operate between April and November is that the humpbacks have migrated north to Alaska. The year-round whales cannot give guaranteed sightings.

What Should I Bring on a Whale Watching Tour in Kona?

If you’re planning to go whale watching on the Big Island, it’s important to be prepared for your time on the water.

For starters, you’ll want to bring plenty of sun protection such as a hat , sunglasses , and reef-safe sunscreen .

A light jacket or long-sleeved shirt might be wise in case the ocean breezes are cooler than expected.

If you are prone to seasickness (like me), you’ll want to take Dramamine or find another seasickness prevention measure like an anti-nausea wristband .

You’ll of course want to bring a camera/phone , preferably with a waterproof case to protect it from ocean spray while capturing all the amazing marine life and scenery you’ll see on your tour.

Side Note: one of the tours I was on, someone dropped their phone on the boat but it slipped out one of the drain holes and was lost into the ocean. So hold onto yours tight!

And finally, if you have a GoPro or other action camera, consider attaching it to a string and placing it in the water to capture footage of the humpback whales below your boat.

Is Kona Good for Whale Watching?

Yes! You can you see whales in Kona and the North Kohala Coast. These are the best places for Big Island whale watching . This is where the majority of humpbacks can be seen from whale tours or even from land.

The Kona coastline has a dramatic shelf drop due to the volcanic building of the the island. Just a few hundred yards offshore and the ocean is thousands of feet deep, allowing space for the humpbacks to swim very near to shore.

Is it Better to Whale Watch in the Morning or Afternoon on the Big Island, Hawaii?

Whales do not wear wristwatches or have a concept of hours in the day. They are active throughout the day and come out to play any time of their choosing.

That being said, it is argued that mornings are the best time to go whale watching . The ocean is calmer and less choppy, allowing tails and spouts to be more easily spotted. The weather also tends to be nicer in the mornings, before any potential afternoon showers.

This tour starts at 8:00am!

But there is nothing wrong with afternoon whale watching tours. Underwater photographers will prefer afternoon light as the sun is up higher, illuminating more ocean water.

Can I See Whales From Land?

Yes! Humpbacks are so large that they can easily be seen from land all along the Kona coast.

You can DIY a whale watching by parking yourself at a beach and patiently keeping an eye on the horizon for spouts and breaching.

The best places to see them are beaches with the most expansive horizon like Kua Bay , Spencer Beach Park , or Kapaʻa Beach Park. But I have seen them from Ali’i Drive, so there’s just no telling where they’ll make an appearance!

Which Hawaiian Island is the Best for Whale Watching?

Whale watching tours can be found on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. But if you had to choose an island solely for whale watching, Maui would arguably be the best island.

The highest concentration of humpbacks reside in the warm, shallow waters of the Au’au Channel between Maui, Lana’i, and Molokai.

With that being said, whale sightings are abundant on the other Hawaiian Islands and offer just as much of a fantastic whale watching cruise experience.

How Close Can You Get to a Humpback Whale?

As stated by federal law , it is prohibited to stay within 100 yards of a humpback whale in Hawaiian waters. This regulation applies to all boaters, swimmers, surfers, or anyone using the ocean and must be completely followed at all times.

But while you are not allowed to approach the whales and cruise tours do their best to stay that distance away, the whales have no regulations to get close to you ! Often whales will swim under the boats at no fault of the crew’s, so you get to enjoy the majesty of their size anyways.

What Else Will I See on a Whale Watching Tour in Kona?

Aside from humpback whales, you’ll also have the opportunity to see spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, various tropical fishes and of course, unmatched island scenery.

The spinner dolphins are a real treat to see and often put on an acrobatic show for whale watching boats.

Other marine life you might encounter are green sea turtles and schools of tropical fish. There is also the possibility of spotting other types of whale like the pilot whales or beaked whales.

Once in a while, manta rays are another amazing creature that you may spot on your whale watching cruise, though it is rare. The best way to see them is to take a manta ray night snorkel tour out of Kona .

And finally, the views of the Hawaiian coastline and mountains are simply unbeatable and make for great photo opportunities.

Make your experience of the Big Island one you’ll never forget for a lifetime with a Kona whale watching tour on one of our zodiac rafting vessels! When you arrive at our meeting location , your naturalist captain will explain the whale’s behaviors and get as close to them as possible (we adhere to Federal MMPA viewing regulations).

We also have hydrophones on board to listen to the beautiful whale song. We frequently sight dolphins and other marine life during our expeditions.

Zodiac rafts are known worldwide as the perfect vessel to observe marine life. Our fast-moving Zodiacs get into viewing position quickly and provide an exhilarating and fun ride.

The small-group atmosphere of our expedition allows for a personal and intimate tour.  The rafts are only a few feet off the water and everyone has a front-row seat on our 16-passenger Zodiac.

Big Island Sunset Whale Watching Tour

Experience these majestic animals during one of our lovely tropical sunsets. Spend time viewing the whales in the late afternoon, then watch as the sun sinks below the horizon into the ocean blue before making our way back into the harbor.

Please note that due to the bouncy nature of our ride we do not allow any persons with back or neck problems or ladies that are pregnant on the tour.

Mr. cohichro and shay are awesome, pick-up not available, not accessible, what to expect, travelers interested in this activity also viewed, overall rating.

We had a great afternoon on the boat. Took a seven and two year old out with us to see the whales and the captain was very accommodating to both of them. Once we got the area where the whales were we saw a couple differe ... nt pairs breach multiple times and certainly didn't need binoculars to see them. On our way back to the harbor a few bottle nosed dolphins decided to swim out front of the boat and in the wake for about 10 minutes which was every bit as cool as seeing the whales. I'd highly recommend Aloha Kona Tours.

The captain and crew are so nice The boat is very clean and comfy! the experience was really good. We got to see bunch of dolphins and whales breaching really close to. Thank you so much!

The Great Whale Count , a volunteer effort to collect population data on whales, counted almost 600 whales off Maui’s coast on February 27th, 2023. This is just one example of the density of the whales here come peak season.

This narrow swathe of sea, winding its way between the shoreline of West Maui and Lanai’s east coast, is also shallow which means that the whales are typically closer to the surface and easier to catch a glimpse of.

Don’t fret if your travels aren’t taking you to Maui. Oahu is also a great island for whale watching and there’s a chance to see whales on any of the Hawaiian Islands in the winter months.

What is the Best Time of Year to Go Whale Watching?

The best time of year to go whale watching in Hawaii is from mid-December to April . It’s even possible to spot whales from land during these months! You can technically start seeing whales in October or November, but sightings aren’t guaranteed. Peak season is from January to March and many tour operators will even guarantee sightings, meaning you can jump on a tour on a later date if you don’t see them on your original tour.

You may also be wondering if there’s a specific time of day that is best for spotting whales. We’ve learned from several marine naturalists on past tours and personal experience that you can see them at any hour during the season. We prefer heading out early to avoid the midday heat and the trade winds, which kick up in the afternoon.

Prime whale watching season also happens to coincide with the high tourist season in Hawaii. Just something to keep in mind if you’re planning to visit Hawaii in the winter .

Can You See Whales from the Shore or Do You Need to Take a Tour?

One of the most magical aspects of whale season in Hawaii is that they’re easily spotted from the shore! While Maui is known as the best island to see whales, you can see them from shore on any of the Hawaiian Islands during peak season. Luckily, whales like relatively shallow water which makes it easy to see them surface, or even breach, from your spot on the beach!

With all this in mind, there are specific places on each island that are best for whale watching from the shoreline. On Maui, whale watchers will want to stick to the leeward side of the island, along the Au’au Channel, for the best chance of seeing breaching or spouts. Anywhere from Kapalua to Wailea is a prime destination for whale watching from shore.

As the second best place among the Hawaiian Islands to go whale watching, Oahu is a great place to see whales on dry land. Spots to seek out include Turtle Bay, Pyramid Rock Beach, Sharks Cove, Halona Blowhole, and Lanai Lookout. Locations on Oahu’s North Shore are particularly great for catching a glimpse. 

Some of the most notorious spots on Kauai for spotting whales are the Kilauea Lighthouse, Makahuena Point, and Kapa’a Lookout. These locations are spread out across the island which is ideal if you’re fitting whale watching into a tight schedule.

Last but not least, Hawaii’s Big Island is one of the more tricky places to see whales but it’s still possible. Make a beeline for the Four Seasons Hualalai , Kapa’a Beach Park, or the Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site for a chance to spot them from January to March.

Hawaii’s smaller and less frequented islands, like Lanai , are also ideal areas for whale watching. Pu’upehe is a great vantage point to see whales from shore on the “Pineapple Isle”.

How Much Does it Cost to Go Whale Watching?

Considering that you can see whales from the shore in Hawaii, whale watching can be completely free. Still, the best way to see these gentle giants is in their ocean habitat. Most tours are also led by a marine naturalist that gives visitors detailed information that you’ll find both interesting and memorable. 

Prices for a whale watching tour can vary greatly. Tours at the very start of the season can go for as little as $50 per person with some of the larger groups. This kind of excursion can easily climb to $100 per person.

We’ve always had the most enjoyable time on rafting tours, which typically range from $65 to $150. For tours with kiddos, catamarans are ideal. Prices don’t include gratuity which is always appreciated and an added cost to keep in mind.

Captain J’s Super Raft Whale Watching Tour Leaving from Port Allen on Kauai, this tour sets out by Super Raft. Although it sounds like a wild adventure, the Super Raft is surprisingly comfortable with bathrooms onboard and a cover to help protect from the sun. 

Snacks and beverages are included and a hydrophone is used to catch the whales’ beautiful underwater melodies. While sightings aren’t guaranteed, the crew are experts at seeking out the whales. This tour typically goes to Poipu as whales tend to gather in the area’s calm waters.

The Big Island

Keep in mind that whale watching season on the Big Island is typically shorter than on the other Hawaiian Islands and ranges from late December to late March. 

Adventure X Ocean Tours This whale watching tour heads out into Puako Bay, known as the nursing grounds for babies and their mothers, in search of humpback whales. You may see breaching and even competition pods – males vying for a mate – on this tour! This is a 30 ft. power raft tour with a small group of up to 20 people. 

This tour has high chances of close encounters and an onboard naturalist provides interesting facts for the curious. Drinks and snacks are included. They even dip a hydrophone into the water so guests can hear the whale songs. Reservations begin the first week of January and end in March.

Captain Zodiac Leaving from the Big Island’s Kona Coast, this whale watching tour takes off in a 24-foot Zodiac (a type of power raft). This kind of tour is an exhilarating experience and allows visitors to get up close and personal with the whales. 

The captain is a naturalist and adheres to Federal MMPA whale viewing regulations. Only 16 passengers means that this small tour is ideal for those wanting to avoid crowds and have a more intimate experience. Dolphins and sea turtles are also regularly sighted. This tour begins in January and ends in March.

20 Fun Things to Do in Hawaii with Kids in 2024

W ith so many fun things to do in Hawaii with kids, the Aloha State is one of the best destinations for a family-friendly vacation. Each of the Hawaiian islands  is unique and offers an abundance of kid-friendly activities and accommodations for the best family vacation. Not sure which Hawaiian island to visit? Oahu is typically the easiest Hawaiian island to reach and the most affordable for family travel. It also has some of Hawaii’s best beaches for families. Rent a car to drive around the island and experience the many fun things to see and do on Oahu.

1. Visit Honolulu’s Many Kid-Friendly Attractions

Honolulu is a bustling city with many family-friendly oceanfront resorts and attractions like the Honolulu Zoo , Waikiki Aquarium , Bishop Museum and Pearl Harbor . Plus, famous Waikiki Beach is one of the best places to learn to surf and paddle board.

2. Learn About Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is the site of WWII’s 1941 bombing attack and home to the USS Arizona Memorial . Tickets for the 75-minute USS Arizona Memorial program are free. However, there’s a limited number available each day.

The program includes a short video (with actual attack footage) and a round-trip boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, located above the remains of the sunken ship. The ship is the final resting place for more than 1,000 men.

Since Pearl Harbor is one of Oahu’s top attractions, it’s strongly recommended that visitors make advanced reservations online at www.recreation.gov .

3. Hike on Diamond Head

There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk along a trail to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater, but Diamond Head is one of them. A hiking trail leads to the summit for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.

4. Snorkel at Hanauma Bay National Preserve

Located on the side of Koko Head, Hanauma Bay is about a 30-minute drive from Honolulu. With beautiful blue waters, Hanauma Bay is a great place to snorkel and see its 400 species of tropical fish and abundance of green sea turtles.

5. Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center features six island villages representing Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa (New Zealand). At this Polynesian-themed park and living museum, you can learn about various traditions through interactive and hands-on activities. For example, learn to throw a wooden spear, paddle a canoe and cook like a Polynesian.

The center also has family-friendly luaus with a variety of traditional food like lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice and kalua pork. Note that no alcohol is served at this luau.

6. Book Exciting Adventures at Kualoa Ranch

The family-owned Kualoa Ranch offers many different types of tours sure to thrill adults and kids of all ages. Adventures include horseback riding, jungle expeditions, beach outings and visits to Hawaiian fish ponds.

7. Watch Surfers on the North Shore

The North Shore is the rustic and laid-back side of the island with legendary surf beaches and food trucks serving fresh fish tacos, shrimp and more. Take a surf lesson at Hans Hedemann Surf School or just watch the pros. Laniakea Beach is one of the best spots to see sea turtles sunbathing.

8. Eat Shave Ice in Haleiwa

This little surf town is home to boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find Matsumoto Shave Ice – one of the best places to enjoy the snow cone-style treat.

Maui is a popular island for many reasons. It’s a developed island with stunning natural attractions. Kaanapali Beach is a resort area on the western shore of Maui and is home to a variety of beachfront hotels , great family-friendly restaurants , lots of free things to do with kids  and beautiful sunsets.

9. Take a snorkel cruise to Molokini Crater

Enjoy a catamaran cruise to one of the best snorkel and scuba spots in Hawaii – Molokini Crater . The crescent-shaped crater is home to thousands of tropical fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles and other marine life. You can also take a whale watching boat tour to the area.

10. Visit the Maui Ocean Center

Kids of all ages will be impressed with the Maui Ocean Center ’s many exhibits. It features a 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit with a 240-degree view acrylic tunnel, outdoor tide pools, turtle lagoon, living reef and daily presentations.

11. Spend a day on Haleakala

A dormant volcano, Haleakala sits at 10,023 feet above sea level. Catch a sunrise or sunset from the summit. Daytime views are also stunning. Note that it can be chilly at the top, so bring sweaters for everyone.

Don’t rush off the mountain without visiting two unique farms. At the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, you can walk through lavender fields. Nearby, the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm produces award-winning cheeses. On the kid-friendly tours, you’ll feed goats and sample cheese.

12. Drive on the Road to Hana

Pack the car with snacks and drinks for an incredible road trip. Get an early start to beat the crowds on this popular drive. The drive is just 52 miles long. But with 620 curves and 59 narrow bridges, it can take a few hours. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches and the charming town of Hana.

Kauai’s mountains and valleys are lush and green, flowing with waterfalls and rivers that are ideal for paddle boarding and kayaking. Other places to visit include Waimea Canyon, Poipu Beach and Hanalei Bay.

13. Horseback Riding at Princeville Ranch

Located on Kauai’s North Shore, Princeville Ranch is one of Hawaii’s oldest cattle ranches. Horseback riding lessons are available for ages 4 and older.

14. Book Ziplining and Mountain Tubing Tours

Kauai Backcountry Adventures  offers the best family activities for an adrenaline rush. On the mountain tubing tours you’ll float down an old sugar plantation irrigation system, through open canals and through several tunnels hand-dug circa 1870.

In addition, the company offers a seven-line Zipline course through a lush forest.

15. Sail Along Napali Coast

The Napali coast spans 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore. Guided snorkel cruises are an excellent way to see the stunning Napali Coast’s cliffs, sea caves and waterfalls.

Hawaii Island (Big Island)

Hawaii Island, also called the Big Island of Hawaii, has an array of diverse outdoor adventures suitable for the whole family. In fact, because the island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones, you’ll also experience a variety of terrain and weather. Explore beaches, waterfalls, cultural sites and coffee farms on the Big Island, which is home to two active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

Many of the large Hawaii Island resorts, such as the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast , offer hula lessons, canoeing and other Hawaiian cultural experiences  for their guests.

16. Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo

Stop by the visitor center for park news and activities before exploring this unique park that has hiking trails, steam vents, lava tubes and a rainforest. Older kids will especially enjoy trekking through the rainforest to the crater floor pocked with steam vents.

17. Visit Akaka Falls State Park

Located along the northeastern Hilo Coast, Akaka Falls State Park is the site of two waterfalls on one short hike. Follow a footpath through a rainforest to see the 100-foot Kahuna Falls and the towering Akaka Falls . This is a lovely outing for kids of all ages.

18. Shop at the Hilo Farmers Market

The Hilo Farmers Market  features over 200 vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, Big Island food products, tropical flowers and handmade craft items. It’s a great place to shop for picnic items to bring to the beach or back to your hotel.

19. Snorkel in Sunny Kona

The sunny Kona district is great for beach activities like snorkeling , paddle boarding and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). One of Kona’s most unique adventures is the nighttime manta ray boat tour. It’s a magical experience to float on top of the water in a calm bay, with bright lights attracting the rays who swirl inches below.
