Paddling canoes is a truly wonderful experience. It is also very accessible; beginner can have a wonderful day out with no previous experience, but once hooked can spend a lifetime chasing true canoe mastery. South Devon and Dartmoor have everything you could need to chase canoeing perfection, and we can help.
We can take you on every step of your canoe journey: We offer guided trips, coaching on open water and rivers, canoe camping and progressive programmes. We don’t run off the shelf activities, all of our adventures are bespoke for you.
Estuary Canoe Trips
Nothing beats the serenity of open water canoeing*. See the Dart Estuary from Unique angle. This beautiful river boasts home to amazing views and some wonderful wildlife: we have seen seals up close and personal, even heard rumour of rare inland dolphin sightings! One of the beauties of canoeing is the ease of gliding though the water whilst bringing everything you could ever need and more! This adventure is perfect to get your teeth stuck into canoeing. You will learn some valuable skills and knowledge to ensure you are safe and have fun. *We find the amount of serenity is largely dependant on the weather conditions!
We can cater for everyone:
- After a relaxed family outing?
- Some specific trad skills?
- Looking to move from beginner to master?
Choose between our half day (up to 3 hrs) or full day (up to 5 hrs) adventures to suit your needs. This adventure will be based around the tides and winds.
White Water Canoe Trip
The adrenaline and adventure of white water rapids, but from the comfort and confidence of a canoe. Squeezing into a kayak is not for everyone, a canoe offers a more comfortable approach, however the larger canoe requires slightly different skills. Never fear! We can equip you with these skills to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable adventure.
You can paddle tandem, sharing the experience. Halfling the workload and doubling the fun. Or if you’re more of a lone wolf, you can take the river on solo. As the saying goes: half the paddle, twice the paddler!
- Never paddled a canoe before but are desperate for some rapids?
- Have some specific skills to work on?
- Need a guiding down a specific river?
Choose between our half day (up to 3 hrs) or full day (up to 5 hrs) adventures to suit your needs. This adventure will be based around the water levels.
Paddle UK / British Canoeing Awards
We can also provide a range of Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) courses and awards.
A new web-page for these is coming soon, in the mean time contact us to find out more.
Canoe Camping
Canoeing and Camping are two pastimes that fit so beautifully together, the joy of paddling a canoe and the comfort of the equipment you can bring! One of our favourite treats, an afternoon paddle with a night under the stars and paddling home in good time for lunch!
This adventure will be based around the tides and winds.
Wye valley expedition

The Wye River valley is bursting with life and vitality, and is popular for canoeing. Three days meandering gently downstream gives you the opportunity to sink into the exquisite scenery and rhythm of the river. The River Wye and surrounding area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This trip has a real expedition feel to it, and you will come away feeling like you have had a mini adventure. We begin at Hay-on-Wye, just north of the Black Mountains, where we'll meet and load the canoes with everything we need for our journey on the river. We travel several miles each day through changing scenery; flat stretches interspersed with small rapids (nothing too scarey!). There is plenty of birdlife and an abundant flora of mature broadleaf trees. North Devon Explorers
Exploring north devon by land and by sea, kayaking & canoeing.
North Devon Explorers prides itself in providing high quality bespoke kayaking & canoeing tours or coaching.
All trips and coached sessions are run by me and I hold both the British Canoeing’s Sea Kayak Leader and Canoe Leader awards and I am also a Level 2 coach in paddlesport.
I cater for everyone of all ages and abilities, whether you have paddled for years and want to explore somewhere new, or you have never picked up a paddle before, but fancy trying something new.
North Devon has a breathtaking coastline, with Grey Seal colonies, sea caves and delightful secluded bays that are only accessible by boat. Kayak trips are an amazing way to explore the stunning environment as wildlife is far more accepting as kayaks glide by quietly, the odd Porpoise has been known to swim over to me to see what’s going on. Paddling into caves or through holes in the UK’s highest sea cliffs is another must.
Head inland and explore the Taw and Torridge estuaries which really let you see Barnstaple and Bideford from a different perspective whilst paddling down hidden back waters that you get all to yourself. The bird life on the estuaries is abundant and the rural inland scene that we paddle through is so peaceful and serene. These trips can be done in both kayak or Canoe.
Canoeing is also great for the winter months as you can stay dry and wrap up in lots of warm layers (your normal clothes)!
I will discuss with you what you would like to see and do and based on the weather conditions and the tide, I will help you to come up with a trip that will remain in your minds forever!

A world of adventure awaits when you go canoeing in Devon
Explore the creeks, waterways and wooded banks of the Devonian coastline.
Any number of conventional boat trips will provide you with some fantastic views from the water. Yet, none will offer you the sense of elation or hands-on experience that canoeing in Devon does. Taking off in a canoe lets you explore the creeks, waterways and wooded banks of the Devonian coastline. Better still, canoeing offers something for everyone. Experienced paddlers can take the plunge and challenge themselves with white-water sections upriver. Whilst the less experienced can enjoy coasting along gentle meandering stretches. Navigation is a breeze too, the scenery’s spectacular, and there are places to visit that conventional boat trips can’t provide. So, what are you waiting for? Families, groups and individuals are all welcome, and NO prior experience is required. If you’re interested in canoeing in Devon, you’ll find plenty of options available to you and your friends. We have plenty of places for you to launch your vessel, and our guides offer structured tuition and equipment hire for your adventure. About Canoeing and Kayaking in Devon
What are the best canoeing and kayaking locations in Devon?
- The Plymouth Sound: surely one of the world’s most stunning natural harbours, there are of course some fantastic paddling opportunities here. Be wary of tides and currents, but the inlet around Wembury just further out into the sound from Plymouth provides some stunning views, and the Mew Stone - sitting proud out in the estuary - provides a great destination for a paddle. Heading inland from here the River Yealm provides a tranquil setting for a journey to Puzlinch Bridge.
- The River Dart: the River Dart is split into three main sections when it comes to white water paddling. The Loop is the middle section, so named for the shape of its main meander, and is arguably the most popular section of white water in England. Either side of this are the Upper Dart and Lower Dart, with the Upper section also providing ample white water opportunities. More details on this below!
- The Dart Estuary: much tamer than it’s upper reaches, the tidal section of the river makes for some fantastic and scenic canoeing, ideal for beginners, groups and families. This section is also ideal for combining a paddle with a wine tour, pub visit, or perhaps a wild camping trip.
- The Tamar Valley: similar to the Dart Estuary, this beautiful river divides the counties of Cornwall and Devon, offering scenic paddles suitable for all. There are plenty of activity providers around to hire from, or to offer guided tours.Try heading off from the historic quay at Cotehele and paddle upriver past the pretty village of Calstock as it clings to the steep bank of the Tamar, and into the wilder sections towards the limit of the tidal section.
- Bigbury/Burgh Island: one of the most iconic coastline features in the UK, Burgh Island provides a fantastic backdrop - and destination - for a paddle from the impressive blue flag beach at Bigbury-on-Sea, just a short drive from Plymouth.
- Exmoor, The River Barle: the Barle is the largest river that flows through the National Park and is classed as a grade 2-3 river, meaning less experienced paddlers should only go out with supervision or under instruction. The Barle is one of the more scenic rivers you are likely to paddle, being also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its important wildlife that includes salmon, otters, kingfisher, dipper and the very rare river jelly lichen. This does mean that kayaking is only permitted downstream of Tarr Steps, and only between 15th October and 31st March when levels are high enough.
- Torquay: with a stunning coastline to explore this is a great location to embark on a day trip, or even combine a multi-day trip with some wild camping and catching your own dinner! Paddling out from a variety of launch points discover the Orestone Rock or take a journey to St Mary’s Bay via Berry Head for a chance to spot dolphins!
Best canoeing and kayaking trips for beginners, groups and families in Devon
- The Dart: there are some lovely options available here. Paddle to the pub and back (options include the villages of Stoke Gabriel, Dittisham and Tuckenhay), maybe stop off at the Sharpham Estate for some wine tasting, or maybe even wild camp overnight for a proper family adventure! There are various activity providers offering trips here, so check out our listings for further details.
- The Tamar: there are few better ways to experience the stunning scenery and wildlife of the Tamar Valley than by canoe or kayak. Often launching from Cotehele Quay the route upriver contains many points of interest beside the natural beauty, including the Cotehele estate and the chapel built there by Sir Richard Edgcumbe after his escape from the Roundheads. You’ll paddle underneath the impressive Calstock viaduct, built in 1907, and see many signs of the thriving copper mining industry that once occupied this stretch of the river.
- Grand Western Canal, Tiverton: born of an idea to link the Bristol and English Channels it was of course never completed, but now offers an opportunity to explore the gorgeous Devon countryside by canoe or kayak. Hire a canoe in Tiverton for a great family day out, rounded off of course with a Devon cream tea when back on terra firma!
What are the best canoeing and kayaking locations on the River Dart?
- The Loop is considered the prime location on the Dart (and in England!), running from Newbridge to Holne Bridge and graded 2-3.
- The Upper Dart is considered grade 3-4 depending on the water levels, making it more suitable for advanced paddlers.
- The Lower section is grade 2 and generally more suitable for beginners and those getting to grips with white water.
- The estuary section is a great location for canoeing and more gentle paddling but take note of the tides.
- Newbridge (Pay and Display)
- Dartmeet (Pay and Display)
- River Dart Country Park (entrance fee applies)
Best white water kayaking in Devon
- Top Wave (Loop section): within about 50m after departing Newbridge is a river-wide wave, very popular with playboaters with its eddy service on both sides and an easy walk back to the car park.
- Lover's Leap (Loop section): a 100m grade III rapid requiring some rock evasion and a final wave pushing into the leap itself; a large undercut cliff-face. The drop is easily avoided in most conditions (high flows may cause more problems), and it has the potential to pin less experienced paddlers so take precautions.
- Triple-drop / Triple-falls (Loop section): meriting inclusion as the most difficult grade III rapid on this section of the Dart, and as such precautions should be taken. Inspection and portage are both possible here if necessary. The first drop is a small ledge, followed by a bigger wave/stopper into a pool. The third is the hardest, and a centre line is recommended followed by a move to either side to avoid a tricky stopper. There is a flat pool after this allowing for rescue if needed!
- Holne weir (Loop section): with higher water this is a highly retentive stopper and should be treated with caution. There are two chutes which should not be missed, though the approach is flat and relatively easy.
- Boulder Garden (Upper Dart): a fairly steep rapid made up of numerous boulders. The lead in is relatively simple, though the twisting path makes for the first Class IV whitewater of this stretch, with a long pool waiting below.
- Board Ledge (Upper Dart): A fun section follows a long straight, as the river bends river and drops over 3 wide bedrock ledges. Approach with more caution as the water level rises and the more significant stoppers form.
- Mad Mile (Upper Dart): closer to half a mile in reality, this section features a series of river-wide ledges and slides with a large pool - Mel Pool - at the halfway mark. Caution is advised in high waters with the stoppers holding swimmers. If in doubt use the sneak routes here. A series of ledges finish in a diagonal ramp at Mel Pool, which in high water produces a huge cushion wave and is particularly dangerous when in flood. Mel Pool Steps has a number of routes with a series of small slides that leads to easier water.
Safety Advice for Canoeing and Kayaking
- Weather, flow, tides and visibility : Attention should be paid to the flow of the river by checking the environment agency website and others. A significant flow on the river can be caused by excessive rain, often hundreds of miles away, that over a number of days, pour into the river can cause significant currents. Whilst its often hard to see ‘flow’ just by looking at the river the National River Flow Archive can provide specific information on the flow to enable you to decide if it’s worth the outing. Often, it’s much nicer to paddle in calmer waters, rather than battling a surging river and having greater risk around meanders, bridges and other boat vessels, so this is something to consider. Likewise, wind, tide, weather and visibility should be taken into consideration when planning your canoeing or kayaking trip.
- Conditions within your level of capability Always err on the side of caution when going out in your canoe or kayak and make sure you’re comfortable with the conditions of the water
- Tell your friends: Let people know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Ideally go with a group of people so if someone falls in, you’ll have others to help or raise the alarm
- Get training: Book in a canoeing or kayaking instructor course or experience days on Beyonk
- Practice falling in drills: In calmer waters and with the supervision of an instructor, practice how to fall in and what to do when you do fall in, so you’re prepared on what to do
- Consider wearing safety equipment such as buoyancy aids, which can be life-savers in many scenarios even if you’re a strong swimmer. The water temperature, flow or taking a knock to the head can all present risks that will make your swimming skills useless and a buoyancy aid life-saving
- Wear appropriate clothing for the conditions of your paddle. Don’t risk getting soaking wet and cold in the rain if you’re going out for prolonged periods

Daily Canoe Trips
If you are looking for a truly relaxing way to enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that the Tamar Valley has to offer, then there is simply no better way to do it than with a Canoe Tamar safari.
Our daily canoe trips all start and finish from Cotehele Quay and because the river Tamar is the boundary between two counties you will be canoeing in Devon and canoeing in Cornwall!
Availability of the journeys varies according to the daily tide times. Check out our timetable to see the times of trips for 2023
Cotehele to Harewood and back
The river Tamar divides Cornwall and Devon. The canoe trip starts from Cotehele Quay which is about 20 mins from Plymouth. You will be on the water between two and two and a half hours and we will take a picnic break at our private river side wild meadow.
Cotehele Quay is part of the National Trust property based around Cotehele House, Cornwall. The Shamrock, a fully restored Tamar barge is moored there. There are tearooms in the Edgcombe Arms on the quay and delicious local organic ice cream for sale.
On our canoe trip you will paddle past the steep woodlands of the Cotehele estate and the chapel built by Sir Richard Edgcumbe to mark his escape from the Roundheads. A sharp bend in the river take us past Danescombe House, built for a mine captain and once a hotel. Boatyards and moorings bring us to the famous Calstock viaduct completed in 1907 which we paddle underneath. The viaduct is still in use by the Tamar Valley rail link from Gunnislake to Plymouth, and our halt at the village.
The river then winds it way up past Okel Tor Quay on the Cornwall side and Gawton Quay on the Devon side of the river, once part of a large thriving copper industry with ships taking the ore from the 19th century mines along the valley. There is evidence of the mining activity all the way, with ruins, chimneys and disused small quays.
Our destination point on the river can vary depending on the weather and enthusiasm of the paddlers! But often we will get as far as, the affectionately known “Pirate Ship”…once a grand little boat that moored along the river, now the bones lay submerged with the mast still standing proud above the water.
Our instructors will happily talk to you about the history and your surroundings on the trip and will endeavor to answer any questions you have along the way!
See our 2023 Canoe Trip Timetable >
£36 for adults and £26 for under 18’s, with under 5’s going free.
Who can join in?
Everyone is welcome!
Age 3 years upwards, there is no upper age limit, but there is an upper weight limit 127kgs/20 stone.
You may be coming with a friend or as part of a group or family but unfortunately you cannot book a canoe trip as one person, you will need a minimum of two people.
Well behaved dogs are very welcome too!
Our traditional style Canadian canoes are large enough to take up to three adults and are very safe and stable. Even if you have never been in a canoe before you will quickly find that they are easy to paddle and that you can keep dry and comfortable.
You do not need to be particularly fit or energetic as we travel with the tide. Our trips are suitable for all ages and stages of life. You will need to be able to manage a paddle on one side of the boat and we can help less agile people in and out of the canoes safely. You do not need to be able to swim.
Read our Guide to Exploring the River Tamar here.
What is provided?
We will supply every customer with a suitable Buoyancy Aid & Paddle.
We also have a water tight container to store your valuables that we take on the trip with us! You can take your camera if you feel comfortable to do so, and you are welcome to store that in our container. One of your instructors is likely to take some photos during the trip so remember to ask them where to see them afterwards!
The Flipflops and Wellies team (aka family activity blogger Clare and her family) joined us on a trip this summer, read her article about their experience here .

The River Dart is amazing
The River Dart is an area of outstanding natural beauty and by paddling up or down the river (tide dependant) you will very quickly see why its so famous. There's plenty of rolling hills and woodland that surround this incredible river. It is very picturesque and drifting down with the tide, it is easy to forget all the worries of everyday life and put a smile on your face.
Safety is important
The river Dart is tidal and has some remote areas, it will need some consideration and planning to make your trip safe and enjoyable. If you are new to kayaking or canoeing, we recommend taking a lesson first or joining a guided trip to get a feel for it. Just talk to us and we will help you find the appropriate trip for you.
We will make sure you will have all the information and safety equipment you need to help you make your trip fun before you start.
We always monitor tide and weather conditions to ensure your safety, and we have a safety boat on standby* at all times.
(*Safety boat call out charge applies for non emergencies )

Kayaks, Canoes and Rowing Boats in Devon
One wonderful and interesting way to explore Devon is via the waterways, and there are fewer ways better than taking a kayak. Anyone - whatever their age or ability - can enjoy a gentle paddle on a Devon river – or perhaps go further and try or an exciting rapid descent. For those looking for something a little more contained, there are also lakes and reservoirs, and many estuaries where you can complete a route using the river, through the estuary and back up another river.
If you don’t have your own equipment, or could do with some instruction, just seek out one of the many local businesses who can help. To find a well-regarded, accredited company just check out our list below.
3 great places to Kayak in Devon
The River Dart : This ancient river flows from the heights of Dartmoor through woodland to the sea at Totnes, and through stunning locations. The kayaking ranges from white water for advanced kayakers on the Upper Dart, to gentle waters down near the sea.
The River Torridge: Set off from the steps at 'Little America' - a layby about 3/4 mile out of Bideford on the Torrington Road. For a short paddle go up as far as the old iron railway bridge, then just before it turn right up the river Yeo, where if you’re lucky you might see kingfishers. To extend your paddle carry on as far as the tidal limit at Weare Gifford before turning back.
Roadford Lake : One of the biggest and busiest inland waters in the South West, Roadford Lake on Dartmoor has a fantastic activity centre where you can hire canoes and paddleboards - or even try your hand at sailing with an instructor team. Once on the water, you’ll be able to enjoy a range of natural habitats on its shores including culm grasslands, woodlands, old pastures and orchards. Dormice and bat boxes, bird hides and buzzards help to make this an environment which is humming with wildlife.

There are two main ways to add routes. The first is to draw directly on the map from this point. This allows you to follow the route you took. You can use the blue control box to change colour during drawing. This may be for different elements such as portage or to highlight going through a tunnel.
The second way is by GPX. If you have a GPX file you have recorded you can import this to save you having to draw the route. Please note, the GPX route must be from this PaddlePoint. If not, you will need to add a new PaddlePoint and then import the route from there.
Add GPX Route
Please note, this is for files that end in .gpx only. For an explanation of GPX files please visit this Ordnance Survey article.
To upload your .gpx file either drag it into the space below, or click in the space to choose the file to upload.
Please note, by uploading your route you give us the right to use it on the Go Paddling website, social media, and for promoting PaddlePoints. Follow this link to learn more about how we process your data
This route starts too far away from the selected PaddlePoint. Please select an existing PaddlePoint and attach the route to it, or add a new PaddlePoint at the start position.
This button will centre the map to the start of the route
Add a Direct Draw Route
You will see the blue control box at the bottom left hand side of the map. This allows you to change colour, undo any mistakes, and track distance plotted. Simply click or tap the map and the line will draw. As you draw, the distance updates.
When you have completed the route, click Finished. You will then be able to enter a title, photos, and choose whether you want it to be a public or a private route. Public and private settings can be changed at any time in your Profile Overview.
Report PaddlePoint
Please use this function to report a PaddlePoint which is in the incorrect place or which has abusive or unacceptable content. If there is a slight adjustment to the content or details of the PaddlePoint, please use the Comments feature to add them.

River licensing information, licence required.
The River Axe is river which runs through Dorset, Somerset and Devon. It rises in Dorset near Beaminster before flowing west. It then flows south by Axminster where it joins the English Channel at Axemouth.
The 22-mile river is thought to get its name from the Latin take on the Brittonic word “isca”. This translates either as ‘water’ or ‘abounding in fish’.
Much of the river is designated as a site of special scientific interest with a range of aquatic life to be marvelled at. There are regular otters to keep an eye for as you enjoy your paddle.
