What to expect.

The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument and the Marias River corridor are best experienced by canoe or kayak. Because both rivers are wide, with docile currents and lack white water rapids, the trip is easily navigated and doesn’t require advanced, technical skill. Visitors can expect to paddle (with the current) 14-20 miles per day.

LaBarge Rock

This odyssey will take us from Coal Banks Landing, an hour east of Great Falls, to the Kipp Recreation Area, where U.S. Highway 191 crosses “Big Mo”, deep in the prairies and breaks of north-central Montana. Don’t miss this great opportunity to camp where Lewis & Clark camped, to explore the same ridges and coulees, and to paddle the same waters! This stretch of the Missouri is loaded with history and historic relics, and most of the area remains unspoiled. It was Lewis & Clark’s gateway into the Rocky Mountains.

Downriver from Hole in the Wall

TRIP BASE:   O’Haire Motor Inn , 7th Street and 1st Avenue South, Great Falls, Montana, 800-332-9819. Call motel in advance for airport shuttles. There is major airline service to Great Falls.

MEETING TIME:  Pre-trip orientation including food and gear handout plus safety talk at 6 PM the evening prior to the first day of the trip. For example, if the trip is the 16th-23rd, we meet at 6 PM on the 15th in the O’Haire lobby.

TRIP DIFFICULTY:  Generally mellow with the river current doing much of the work, but canoeing can be strenuous into a head wind. There will be opportunities to day hike, and moving gear from canoes to tent sites requires physical labor, too. There are no whitewater rapids, but there are a few riffles that are easy to negotiate. No canoeing experience is required. Please inform us if you do not know how to swim!

Relaxed Canoeing

SPECIAL FEATURES:  A unique chance to experience real northern Great Plains wilderness, with cottonwood trees along the river and pines on the slopes and in the draws. Plenty of very scenic buttes and cliffs. Deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, coyote, beaver and other native species abound. Great bird watching for waterfowl, raptors, migratory and nesting songbirds and more! A few roads, mostly dirt, wind down to the river, but most of this 110-mile trip is roadless wilderness. When it rains, the famous Missouri River “gumbo” (clay) will stick to your shoes. Visit landmarks “discovered” by Lewis and Clark; camp where they camped!

Badlands Canoeist

ITINERARY:  We’ll have one, possible two layovers, depending upon our progress. At the end of the trip, a pre-arranged vehicle shuttle back to the put-in will take about 4 hours. On the river, there’s no rigid itinerary; we will, literally and figuratively, go with the flow.

*Trip price includes equipment (canoe/paddles/life jackets, tent, sleeping bag and pad, eating utensils), food and cooking (3 meals/day plus snacks), cooking gear, trip planning, comprehensive safety instruction, all user/permit fees, transportation from town to and from the trailheads, and our professional guide/naturalist staff. There is a $300 discount if you bring your own tent, sleeping bag & pad, and cup/bowl/spoon).

canoe trips on the missouri river

The wild backcountry of southern Utah in and around Canyonlands National Park is one of the most colorful and enchanting landscapes on earth. Within the heart of Canyonlands National Park two of the American West’s most iconic rivers, the Colorado and the Green, converge. Up river of the confluence the Green River meanders gently through the spectacular red sandstone cliffs of both Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons. The journey through this stretch of river is considered to be one of the premier calm water canoe trips in the USA and can be run by novice paddlers. Sheer canyon walls, mesas, arches, hidden grasslands, cool desert streams, and an unbelievable profusion of spectacular rock formations characterize this magnificent portion of the Colorado Plateau. Wildlife includes desert bighorn, puma, bobcat, coyote and golden eagle. We usually encounter and explore some fantastic and haunting rock art of ancient Puebloan cultures. This is classic red rock canyon country, absolutely beautiful and other-worldly. Though the region is high desert, the diversity of life and its adaptations to a harsh environment are truly amazing. Warm sunny days are the rule, but the high desert weather can be unpredictable. This trip is rated easy to fairly strenuous depending on wind and weather. The trip base is Moab, Utah.

Our paddle down the Green will begin at the Crystal Geyser boat launch and take us 64 river miles to our take out location at Mineral Bottom. We will follow in the footsteps of the Puebloan and Freemont cultures, the John Wesley Powel expedition of 1869, and the iconic conservationist/author Edward Abbey. Our Journey will include at least one layover day, in which we can hike and explore some of the side canyons within the park. It can be expected to float around 10-12 river miles per day. This stretch of the Green is loaded with history and historic relics, and most of the area remains unspoiled. Don’t miss the chance to experience this breathtaking canyon!

Lewis and Clark Trail Adventures

Lewis & Clark Trail Adventures

Historical River & Trail Trips

Missouri River Canoe and Lolo Trail Hiking combo Trips

Missouri river hike to Hole in the Wall

For the most comprehensive Lewis & Clark adventure combine our canoe trip on the Wild & Scenic Upper Missouri and walk in the last true remaining footsteps of Lewis & Clark on the Lolo Trail , where little has changed since the expedition crossed this ancient trail.

Lewis & Clark Trail Adventures is the only outfitter licensed and permitted on BOTH the Missouri River AND Lolo Trail.

Experience why Lewis & Clark described the Lolo Trail as the most challenging yet majestic portion of their journey. We’ll visit sites along the trail where they endured great hardship like Wendover Ridge and Snowbank Camp or the “inexpressible joy” on Spirit Revival Ridge. The Lolo Trail is a high mountainous ridgeline trail that allows you to see where the expedition came from and brings to light the decisions they faced. You will have the opportunity to explore Lewis Clark camps rarely visited in the last 200 years like 13-Mile, Sinque Hole, Lonesome Cove and many more.

Lewis and Clark’s Adventures

Following the westward journey of the expedition allows you to experience the landscape first hand as they saw it coming up the Missouri (we paddle downstream). Stephen Ambrose’s book, Undaunted Courage, has inspired many to paddle this section of the Missouri River also known as The White Cliffs. You’ll camp where they camped, see what they saw and learn about their trip from our experienced guides. For any river traveler, this trip offers a very accessible route of discovery: geology, wildlife, Native American culture, early explores and the pioneers that followed. The landscape has changed little since Lewis & Clark passed through the Upper Missouri in the spring of 1805. River travelers today can appreciate the words of Meriwether Lewis when he wrote of the endless “seens of visionary inchantment…”

Level of difficulty

Canoeing the Missouri appeals to beginner and experienced paddlers alike. The gentle meandering current allows you the solitude to paddle your own tandem canoe a long side our guides. Large canoes may be available with advance notice for larger groups.

Hiking the Lolo Trail – The most challenging section of trip is Wendover Ridge. The trail begins with a 2 miles of switchbacks then follows the ridgeline for 6 miles. It climbs approximately 3000 vertical feet from the Lochsa River to Snowbank Camp. This trail climbs steadily and really gives you a feel for the difficulties the expedition faced. This trip does not require any technical skills but we recommend you are in good physical condition, have previous hiking experience climbing in elevation and the desire and determination to reach the top! If others in your group want to see the Lolo Trail but not climb Wendover Ridge an alternative itinerary can be planned with historical interpretations and both groups will meet at camp to share their stories of the day.

Missouri Canoe Instruction at Put in

Our goal as an outfitter on this trip is to help you get off the beaten path to see remote areas of the L&C Trail not accessible by car. Below is information to help you plan the “self-guided” discovery of the L&C trail along highways and towns.

Our Missouri trips meet in Fort Benton, MT, 35 NE of Great Falls, MT on Hwy 87. We begin paddling from Coal Banks Landing, 45 miles downriver from Fort Benton and provide transportation based out of Fort Benton. The Lolo Trail trips meet and return to Lochsa Lodge, 50 miles west of Missoula, MT on Hwy 12 and we provide transportation based out of Lochsa Lodge.

When doing a Missouri River & Lolo Trail combo trip, we recommend renting a car to experience at your own pace the scenery and easily accessible Lewis & Clark interpretive stops for example:

  • Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, MT
  • “The Great Falls” at Ryan Dam near Great Falls, MT
  • The Gates of the Mountains boat tour near Helena, MT
  • Lewis & Clark Pass near Lincoln, MT
  • Travelers Rest Interpretive Center near Lolo, MT
  • USFS Interpretive Center at Lolo Pass border of MT & ID

We suggest having map of MT & ID and the L&C route handy while planning your travel itinerary: There are two different routes between the Missouri River and Lolo Trail, either Hwy 12/I-15 through Helena, MT and Hwy 200 through Lincoln, MT. One could fly in/out if Missoula and rent a car based from Missoula that way at the end of your trip on the Lolo, just a short drive to Missoula for lodging and flight out. If more pressed for time, one could fly into Great Falls and out of Missoula with a one-way car rental. We are happy to help you plan the best itinerary for you based on what areas of the Lewis & Clark Trail you would like to see. Feel free to call us for suggestions.

Your estimated drive times not including stops at road side historical sites:

  • Great Falls to Fort Benton: approx 45 min
  • Great Falls to Missoula: approx 3 hours
  • Missoula to Lochsa Lodge: approx 1 hour
  • Total from Fort Benton to Lochsa Lodge: approx 5 hours

Canoe and Camp on Missouri’s Big River at Cherokee Landing!

NOTICE: Due to limited capacity reservations are highly recommended.

Why the Big River?

You will avoid the crowds of many of Missouri’s float rivers, while enjoying the relaxing natural surroundings of this Northern Ozarks stream. Big River’s name is quite a misnomer. Early French settlers named the river Grande due to its beauty and during translation to English the name “Big” evolved. Big River is a tributary of the Meramec River, flowing north to the confluence.

Float through the forested ridges and cool hollows of St. Francois State Park.

canoe trips on the missouri river

Cherokee Landing is a small outfitter and the only one on this portion of the Big River, so you will not find the over-crowded condition of other rivers.

cherokee landing big river mo

Cherokee Landing is centrally located with easy highway access and is within an hour of St. Louis. Float trips start upstream and end at Cherokee Landing.

Water Levels

Because of our location on the upper portion of the river, the water level around Cherokee Landing can rise and fall very quickly. Very often, when the St. Louis or Steelville areas have floods, Cherokee Landing has an excellent float. Please call ahead to check the river condition. Click here to view USGS water level data for the Big River. Please be aware that during low-water levels (3.5 feet or less) the suggested maximum weight of floaters and gear is 400 lbs. for a 4-person raft and 600 lbs for a 6 person raft.

We are open:

Friday & Saturday for camping • Saturday & Sunday for float trips

Reservations are not required but recommended as availability cannot be guaranteed without it.

Weekday floats and camping are only available with a prearranged appointment.

We request that all floats end before dusk.

Adventure Bound Canoe

Adventure Bound Canoe

Now missouri river outfitters, mroutfitters.com 1-406-622-3295, the upper missouri wild and scenic river is an unmatched location for your next adventure bound canoe trip.

What is Adventure Bound Canoeing? We are not talking about your average canoe trip on your favorite pond. We are talking about getting out into the wild and having an adventure that happens to be in a canoe. There is no better place in the US to do this than on the Upper Missouri River Breaks near Fort Benton, Montana.

canoe trips on the missouri river

Years ago, we fell in love with the idea of taking people on canoe adventures on this Wild and Scenic River. And now it’s official: Adventure Bound Canoe and Missouri River Outfitters have been dating since 1990. We wanted to help people with their own boats who just need a shuttle, those wanting a day trip while visiting Fort Benton, or those who want the full deal—equipment, guides, food, tents and everything else that lets you enjoy the great outdoors. There are not many places left where you can walk (and paddle) in footsteps of Lewis and Clark and see the land just as they saw it. Going further back, this river and the land it flows through was a major corridor for Native Americans of various tribes as well. So if you are seeking an authentic canoe adventure, you won’t be disappointed.

We have since grown and are now known as Missouri River Outfitters. You can learn about us and book your trip here: www.mroutfitters.com . We offer everything from rentals to shuttles to fully guided trips.

See you on the river!

Our 1st float trip was amazing. They made it easy, Cool shower house, working toliets and stalls, They were quick to get a cell phone back to us left on the van, before we docked out. Cute store, good prices, All we did was set up camp, they came by to load us and our raft was ready at the water, picked us up and unloaded us at site. Thanks to the great experience, we will return as much as we can:)
Great adventure and great host. We will definitely be back. Thanks Terry and Barbie
Thank you, thank you to Terry, Barbie, Tanya, Susan, and everyone else at Majestic Views & Adventures. You made our float easy and were so friendly! Our family has floated a lot of group floats over the last 30 plus years and everyone said that this year was by far the best. You packed our gear with a smile and provided prompt, comfortable service. All we had to do was show up and have fun. Thanks again. We will definitely be back.
We had a wonderful time! Great friendly and accomodating people. Since it was last minute, my daughter forgot her water shoes. One of the staff ladies offered a pair of her own for my daughter to use. I have never experienced that kind of offer from any other float/campground company. This Missouri River Offers One Of The Most Scenic Canoe Trips In The U.S.

Current River is the Canoe Capital of the Ozarks. And it’s worth that tag for the scenes alone.

The Show-Me State, as Missouri is known, has several attractions that travel the gamut from the standard and regular—to those that are way off the beaten path. And so, while there are ten reasons and more—to visit Missouri's glittering cities like Branson , Kansas City, or St. Louis, there are other unique attractions in Missouri deep in the countryside—that, though little-known, are no less alluring. And again, while Missouri is definitely more than the Ozarks , the craggy mountain range provides a breathtaking backdrop to much of Southern Missouri. That includes the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first national park area to protect a river system.

One of only two rivers that make up the Ozark National Scenic Riverways—it is also known to offer one of the most scenic canoe trips in the entire United States. And that’s the Current River that’s known for its emerald-green luster—and the focus of this article.

Here’s Why Current River Is Arguably The Best Canoeing Destination In The United States

For starters, Current River offers excellent canoe camping to visitors. Aside from canoe camping, and perhaps to delightfully enhance the canoe camping experience, Current River also boasts a stunning scenery that will constantly keep the paddler’s eyes up and turning—almost the entire time one is floating on the strikingly emerald waters. While waterways, be they rivers and lakes—are always fabulous to look at, Current River takes beauty to a whole new level. One will keep on gawking and gazing at the towering bluffs whose rugged beauty gives the whole area an ambiance that’s serene, regal, and imposing.

Current River is also lined with beautiful caves and caverns—including Cave Spring —whose enchanting beauty so struck Thomas Benton that the famous American artist would go on to illustrate it on canvas in one of his most enduring works. Aside from these, Current River also boasts a number of attractive sandbars and gravel bars that jut out of the water in an artistic style that remarkably enhances the river’s visual appeal. Then again, the gravel bars are the dream of overnight floaters.

While all these would be great, there’s more to Current River than the surrounding scenery that is richly magnified by the jaw-dropping Ozark backdrop. There’s so much to admire within the river itself. For instance, the waters of the Current River are of an emerald-blue shade that is just so enchanting. There’s a reason this river is called the Emerald of the Ozarks. It gets that distinctive color because of the many springs that abundantly feed it. These include the Blue Spring—the deepest spring in the Show-Me State. At some points on this river, the waters seem to be in a mad rush, as if on a mission to overrun everything and everyone. At other points, it swirls and stops as if in quiet contemplation of the imposing bluffs.

Here’s How To Plan A Canoe Camping Trip To Current River

For those planning a trip to Current River, an important decision to make will be whether to go camping or just pull the boat by a gravel bar on the side of the river while the night away. If camping has won, one should consider the particular campgrounds to pitch a tent on—and the needs, if any, of camping gear. There are several places for great camping along this scenic expanse, including Van Buren, Pulltite (owned by Current River Management), Two Rivers, and Big Spring. Aside from these, one can also camp at Montauk, Round Springs, and Powder Mill Ferry. Campers can rent camp gear at any of these places.

  • How Much Is Camping Around Current River? While organized campgrounds, like the ones we’ve highlighted, charge a fee, one can camp at any other spot along the river for free.

It’s important to note that Current River can get crowded. While the crowd size can vary from place to place, a better strategy for those who want to avoid crowds is to go floating on a weekday. Alternatively, early morning hours are perfect. Those who’ll be on the waters when the dawn is just breaking can particularly paddle for long before meeting anyone else. But going before Memorial Day is also a sure bet—if one is keen on avoiding crowds. For those looking for the best part of Current River to float on, our pick is the 10-mile section between Akers to Pulltite. The scenery here is on another level. There are a number of caves one can float into.

For outfitters, Current River Canoe Rental—located at the Pulltite Campground—is usually a great choice. This is especially true for those keen on the upper side of Current River. Finally, renting a canoe will set one back by $50 . That’s it. Current River is the Canoe Capital of the Ozarks. And it’s worth that tag for the scenes alone.

canoe trips on the missouri river

Author Rick Van Noy took a canoe trip down the Delaware River into his past

T he Delaware River bends slightly before it runs into Titusville, N.J., and reveals Rick Van Noy’s past: the white church steeple, boyhood boulders he swam between with friends, and the little schoolhouse where he’d sit and stare at the water outside the window.

Life pulled Van Noy away from the Mercer County waterfront, and he moved to Colorado, Washington, and Ohio for school and work. For the last 20 years, he has taught American literature at Radford University. In 2021, after a stroke and separation, Van Noy returned to his roots with his Wenonah canoe and his dog, Sully. Together they paddled some 200 miles south, from Hancock, N.Y., to Trenton, a journey chronicled in his new book, Borne by the River .

“This was always sort of home,” Van Noy said by the river on a recent weekday. “I always thought I would come back.”

Rivers, Van Noy writes in his book, have always inspired authors, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to Norman Maclean’s A River Runs Through It . They’re full of change, ever-moving, and evolving.

“Rivers carry people and goods but also meaning. And this one means something to me,” Van Noy wrote.

The Delaware, he noted, is a historical river and a founding one. It is the reason why cities like Philadelphia, Trenton, Wilmington, and even little hamlets, like Titusville, exist along its edges.

“There’s layers of history here and that’s important,” he said. “It contributes to a sense of place.”

Van Noy grew up blocks from where George Washington crossed the river to lead an attack on Hessians in Trenton.

The river Van Noy grew up on, north of Trenton, is also renowned for recreation: canoeing, tubing, and fishing. He spent his summers working for a local canoe rental. South of Trenton, the Delaware teems with cargo ships and powerboats.

The Delaware flows undammed for 330 miles from New York’s Catskills to the Atlantic Ocean. The river’s East Branch begins in an unremarkable pool, just up the road from a tire shop; the West Branch begins at a former family farm, 1,886 feet above sea level, and down a dead-end road in Schoharie County, N.Y. All told, the Delaware’s watershed encompasses 13,539 square miles of smaller rivers and tributaries that snake through the region.

Van Noy also teaches environmental humanities classes at Radford and authored the book, Sudden Spring: Stories of Adaptation in a Climate-Changed South . He said his interest in environmental issues goes hand-in-hand with his childhood on the Delaware.

“I’ve learned to love the environment by falling in love with the place and the river,” he said.

Van Noy said recent years have been good to the Delaware too. American shad, a once-ubiquitous fish, has returned, and in 2020, Americanrivers.org named the Delaware its “river of the year.”

“The river has come a long way,” the organization noted. “Seventy-five years ago, it was choked with pollution and sewage.”

Van Noy saw bald eagles and osprey on his journey, chatting up fishermen and revelers barbecuing and sipping whiskey along the banks. The following year, he canoed down the Delaware with members of the Lenape Nation.

The paddle toward Titusville flooded Van Noy’s memory with both the missing, like a rope swing, and things that still remain, like the home where he grew up.

“It has occurred to me that my search for sense of place, that most writing on sense of place, is motivated by loss, or learning to value what is before us, deepening our appreciation,” Van Noy wrote in his book.

Someday, Van Noy might return to New Jersey for good, back to his stately childhood home on the hill, by the river.

Van Noy’s book is available at www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501775116/borne-by-the-river/ .
