The Science Behind the Chinese Zodiac

How do Chinese astrologers know each zodiac’s personality, fortune and compatibility with others?

Below is some technical information you might be interested in.

Dì Zhī ( 地支 ), or Earthly Branches, were the original terms used for the years. These branches are also assigned to the hours of the day, based on solar time.

The animals were later added as mnemonics and categorized as either yīn ( 阴 ) or yáng ( 阳 ).

Ten Celestial Stems ( 天干 / tiān gān) pair with the Earthly Branches for a 60 year calendrical cycle. Then add in an element. These cycle through, but each zodiac also has a fixed element. This fixed element is what determines which sign you’re compatible with.

Twelve Earthly Branches: zi ( 子 ), chǒu ( 丑 ), yín ( 寅 ), mǎo ( 卯 ), chén ( 辰 ), sì ( 巳 ), wǔ ( 午 ), wèi ( 未 ), shēn ( 申 ), yǒu ( 酉 ), xū ( 戌 ), hài ( 亥 ).

Ten Celestial Stems: jiǎ ( 甲 ), yǐ ( 乙 ), bǐng ( 丙 ), ding ( 丁 ), wù ( 戊 ), jǐ ( 己 ), gēng ( 庚 ), xīn ( 辛 ), rén ( 壬 ), guǐ ( 癸 ).

Five elements: water ( 水 / shuǐ), wood ( 木 / mù), fire ( 火 / huǒ), earth ( 土 / tǔ), metal ( 金 / jīn).

Travel Tips for the Year of the Dragon, According to the 2024 Chinese Zodiac

F or many centuries, in China and many other many Asian countries, it’s not January 1 that marks the start of a new year: it’s Lunar New Year. And it matters much, much more.

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, starts in 2024 on February 10 and lasts 15 days. The Chinese New Year brings a new set of fortunes affecting everything from career to relationships, and, of course, travel, as predicted by Chinese astrology. While no one knows exactly when the Chinese zodiac was first created, the first record appeared in the 5th century BCE, meaning the astrology system has been in use for more than 2000 years. Variations of the Chinese zodiac are also used in other Asian countries, and Lunar New Year festivals happen in cities around the world .

Chinese astrology is based on the lunisolar calendar. It’s a calendar that takes into account the position of both the moon and sun and is primarily determined by Jupiter’s orbit around the sun, which takes roughly 12 years. Each of the 12 years is characterized by a zodiac animal with its own attributes and compatibilities, as well as one of five elements: wood, fire, water, metal, or earth. That means each particular elemental zodiac year occurs once every 60 years. To make predictions, astrologers consult a star chart based on the major planets and the Chinese constellations.

The upcoming year is the year of the Wood Dragon. The dragon symbolizes power and success, and wood symbolizes progress, as a tree always grows upward. So this year will hold opportunities for many people.

To get the scoop on what that means for travelers according to the 2024 Chinese zodiac, I consulted Juwita Tjong, teacher of Chinese astrology in Indonesia, on what the upcoming year holds and how it will affect travel planning for each of the zodiac signs.

Since the lunar calendar doesn’t follow the Gregorian calendar, and Lunar New Year’s exact date moves each year,  your zodiac symbol may not match the year below. Lunar New Year always begins in late January or early February. So if you’re born during those times, you may have the sign of the previous year.

Year of the dragon for dragons

For those born in: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012

You may think that dragons would have the best luck during the year of the dragon, but that’s actually not true, as your dragon sign will compete with the ruling dragon entity.

If your Chinese zodiac sign is the dragon, your luck and wealth are less than ideal this year, so you should postpone making any big life changes. Dragons should be cautious of accidents or injuries and avoid high-risk activities. The dragon should indeed travel this year as it will increase their luck, but should avoid traveling in a southeastern direction or traveling during the Ghost Month (Aug 4-Sep 2), during which time the barrier between the living and spirit worlds are at their weakest. Considering the increased chances for accidents this year for dragons, it might be best to not travel alone this year, even if that’s your normal travel style.

Year of the dragon for rats

For those born in: 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

Overall, people born under the rat sign will have a smooth year, especially in terms of their wealth and careers. The rat will likely have lots of worthwhile opportunities to travel this year, but since there’s an increased chance of falling ill or sustaining an injury, they should be mindful of their health and, like dragons, avoid high-risk activities.

Year of the dragon for the ox

For those born in: 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

The ox’s fortune is relatively good in the year of the dragon. While there will be obstacles, they’ll be protected by lucky stars that will help to resolve problems. The ox can experience intense emotional swings this year, so prioritize maintaining a harmonious relationship, whether at home or while traveling. Be diligent like the ox and make long-term plans instead of relying on impulsive decisions this year. Travel to tranquil destinations to recharge emotionally, or somewhere that will broaden your cultural horizons.

Year of the dragon for tigers

For those born in: 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

The year of the dragon is good news for tigers, who should travel the most of all the signs due to the flying horse star on their charts. The tiger will likely travel quite a bit for work, though this could be tiring, and tigers should be mindful of their health to make sure they don’t wear themselves weary. Though tigers may have some instability in their incomes, there’s a good chance of finding opportunities outside of the immediate area —  so consider traveling to find new opportunities, or applying for roles away from home.

Year of the dragon for rabbits

For those born in: 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011

The rabbit is one of the Chinese zodiac signs that has a harmful relationship with the ruling deity of the upcoming year, so it’s better to wait until next year to execute big plans. There may also be negative changes in career or relationships, and the rabbit must be careful of falling ill. That doesn’t mean the rabbit shouldn’t travel this year, but it’s best to focus on smaller trips and travel to destinations that inspire peace and relaxation.

For those born in: 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013

There’s a good chance based on the 2024 Chinese zodiac that people born under the snake sign will encounter a happy occasion in their lives this year, such as moving to a better house, getting married, or welcoming a new family member. On the other hand, there’s also a chance that something within your grasp will be stolen by someone else. The snake must take extra care of their mental health this year, as they’ll be prone to stress-related illnesses. Consider perhaps a wellness retreat or a meditation-based trip in the near future.

For those born in: 1942,1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014

There can be significant career advancements or business opportunities in the year of the dragon for those born in a horse year. Networking will be important in order to make those big career moves, so this is the year to be socially active and plan trips and vacations that could further your work successes. Travel to places that will offer more networking opportunities, including conferences or professional events.

Year of the dragon for goats

For those born in: 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015

Based on the 2024 Chinese zodiac, there’s a star that’ll hold the goat back this year, making it difficult for goats to bring plans to fruition. While the goat will have pretty good luck this year, this is not a suitable year for executing big plans, and there’s a chance the goat will lose money or get injured, so beware of sharp objects and stay away from quarrels. That doesn’t mean you can’t make travel plans, though, but getting travel insurance may be more important than usual this year.

For those born in: 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

Those born under the monkey sign are likely to have generally good luck this year, and a protective star on their chart will help resolve any significant personal issues. However, the monkey sign could encounter some legal issues for seemingly simple matters this year. So read the fine print before signing any agreements or booking anything, and be sure to obey all local laws while traveling, even if they seem trivial.

Good news: the rooster is the luckiest sign, according to the 2024 Chinese zodiac. This is the time to make grand plans come true, so start crossing off your bucket-list items and embrace all the opportunities that come your way. Just note that the rooster’s health could be a bit unstable this year, so it’s important to exercise and maintain your health. The rooster also needs to beware of accidents caused by drinking, so while it’s tempting to let loose on vacations, make sure to not drink and drive or overindulge.

An ancient Chinese myth states that the world’s first god – the Jade Emperor – designed the zodiac. The 12 most auspicious animals held a great race to go to the emperor’s party, and it was decreed that the animals would be placed in the zodiac in the order in which they arrived. High jinks ensued as each animal played to their natural strengths in a bid to get there first.

The rat used its wits and speed to win the race and was named first in the zodiac, with the loveable pig, who had been distracted by delicious treats along the way, finishing last; a 12-year zodiac cycle was created, with each year corresponding to one of the animals.

People born in that year are said to take on characteristics associated with its zodiac animal. And every time ‘your year’ (known as běnmìngnián, 本命年) rolls around, it is believed to be bad luck for you, with a series of superstitious activities, ranging from wearing red undergarments to rearranging the furniture in your home, recommended to combat ill fortune.

It is also said to roam the sky, thanks to its great wings. In many stories, dragons were used as a sacred symbol by emperors. Today, people honor the long with vibrant festivals in hopes of increasing their good fortune for the coming year.

To continue, the dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac. The inclusion of this animal likely came down to how important they are in Chinese society. Unlike the more mischievous, malevolent symbolism of dragons in western culture, this creature is seen as a noble, wise being throughout many Asian countries. Because of this, the impact of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac is profound! Typically, it’s a year associated with great potential and the high possibility of success or achievement. Often associated with prosperity, vitality, and the overcoming of challenges, the dragon symbolizes power, endurance, and good fortune.

Past and Future Dragon Births

Chinese astrology.

Chinese Astrology is a horoscope system based on the Chinese calendar and astronomy. It was used to foretell fortunes on Earth according to astronomical phenomena that were thought to be the representation of Heaven’s will. An astronomical phenomenon, or celestial phenomenon, technically represents the locations of planets relative to one another. It's said that one's horoscope at birth is the potential basis of our life changes. In ancient China, people used astrology to predict the grand affairs of the country and the destiny of the emperor. A special astrological government organ was responsible for celestial observation. However, ancient astronomers were mostly astrologers. Chinese Astrology dates from the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and became popular during the Qin, Han and Tang Dynasties. It was closely related to Chinese philosophy and was greatly influenced by Yin Yang Theory and the principles of the Five Elements (Wu Xing). Like western astrology, there are twelve zodiac signs and the stars in sky are also charted into twelve different locations.  

The early one was a complicated lunar-isolar calendar. It is also called the Agricultural calendar (Nong Li). Each year was divided into 24 solar terms, which were an important guide in ancient agriculture. The more modern Chinese lunar calendar is based on cycles of the moon: crescent, first quarter, full moon and last quarter. Each standard year has 12 moon cycles, while a leap year has 13 moon cycles. Each moon cycle has 28-30 days.  

Chinese Zodiac (Sheng Xiao)

Based on the Chinese calendar that used ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches to represent years, twelve zodiac animal signs were created for a cycle of twelve years: rabbit, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. In traditional astrology and in the practice of divination, the Beginning of Spring, the first solar term of a year, was believed to be the real start of a year. Today, the start of a new animal year falls on the Chinese New Year’s Day. This was first certified by law in 1912. However, there are still folk fortune tellers using the old rule.  

A lucky number is basically associated with homophone principles, based on Chinese pronunciation that sounds similar to Chinese words with bad or good meanings. It is one of the basic concepts of Chinese numerology. Number 0-9 is said to be ruled by corresponding celestial bodies and zodiac signs has their particular numbers too.  

Yin Yang Theory

The concept of Yin Yang originated from people’s attitude toward nature in ancient China. The observation of mutually related and apposite aspects inspired the theory philosophically. Yin Yang Theory had come to pervade every aspect of Chinese traditional culture, including religion, philosophy, calligraphy, architecture and the geographical study of Feng Shui.  

Five Elements (Wu Xing)

This is a concept about substance in ancient China and is usually used in philosophy, Chinese medicine and divination. The five elements refer to metal, wood, water, fire and earth, which were thought to make up the entire world. Ups and downs of these five elements were thought to cause changes in the world, affecting everything in the universe including human destiny. Their interrelationship was determined by their unique properties, generating or overcoming. The proper knowledge of the energy interaction helps the Feng Shui practitioner to arrange energy in a way that is beneficial to the receiver of the Feng Shui treatment.  

Iching (The Book of Change)

This is the oldest Chinese astrology classic derived from previous knowledge and was the originator of the Iching Ba Gua diagram. It uses symbolic signs to represent Yin and Yang. Combinations of different signs represent the properties of everything and the personalities of all humans on earth.  

Feng Shui was initially a discipline of geographical surveying widely used to locate a building in an auspicious way. It was used when planning tombs, dwellings and other structures. Feng shui masters in old times relied on astronomy and later the magnetic compass to find a correspondence between the universe and subjects or humans on earth.

It is a chart composed of the month of pregnancy and mom's age, which is used to predict the sex of the fetus.

This Japanese Museum Actually Keeps Time

The Timepiece Museum has about 120 clocks of all shapes and sizes on display, out of a total of about 800, with the oldest dating from the 1400s.

There are a lot of reasons to visit Matsumoto, a city at the foot of the Japanese Alps in the central prefecture of Nagano.

Most visitors head there to see the 16th-century castle, one of the oldest in the country, or to bathe in the natural hot springs. But few, even within Japan’s large community of watch fans, know that Matsumoto also is home to the Timepiece Museum, a three-level bright and airy exhibition space that displays about 120 of its 800 clocks at any given time.

According to the website of the Japan Clock and Watch Association , the museum has “one of Japan’s richest collections of antique clocks in motion so that visitors can enjoy the movement of pendulums and the sound of bells.” (And you should hear the racket when the clocks chime the hour.)

Indeed, what sets the museum apart is that many of its clocks work. “It’s quite rare for clock museums around the world,” said Shun Kobayashi, the museum’s curator.

The oldest clock in the collection is an hourglass dating from the 1400s, and the newest are recent Casio and Citizen timepieces. Not all were made in Japan; eight other countries, including France, Germany and China, are represented, too.

The museum’s initial collection of about 120 clocks was donated to the city in 1974 by Chikazo Honda, an engineer who was an enthusiastic clock collector.

Mr. Kobayashi said that Mr. Honda, who was born in Kagoshima, in the south of Japan, accumulated a large number of clocks while he was living in Tokyo and that, during World War II, he brought them with him when he moved to Suwa, a city about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Matsumoto.

As time passed, he started thinking about donating his timepieces to Suwa, but it had no watchmakers who knew how to repair antique clocks. Matsumoto, however, had both watchmakers and watch shops, and his collection ended up in the Matsumoto City Museum of Art before his death in 1985.

Other citizens began to donate clocks, too, so the city decided to build the museum, which opened in 2002, and it continues to support the facility financially. (There is an entrance fee of 310 yen, or $2).

All Shapes and Sizes

One day in mid-March, I boarded a rapid train from Tokyo and arrived in Matsumoto in a little less than three hours. It was snowing quite heavily, even though spring was just around the corner.

The black and white castle, just a short walk from the train station, looked majestic under the dusting of snowflakes, although there were few tourists on this particular day. The five-tier structure, with three turrets, is one of the 12 original castles in the country. Matsumoto is also known for the Nakamachi , a former merchant district lined with white warehouses called kura. Craft shops, restaurants, breweries and cafes now line the streets, and there is a scale museum in a former scale shop.

Even in the snow, the Timepiece Museum would be hard to miss: A five-meter-tall (16.5-foot) pendulum is in constant motion in front of the building, which stands along the Metoba River. The pendulum is among the largest in Japan, the museum said, and it was intended to be an attraction.

The ground level is dedicated to the history of time, with displays that explain the evolution of timepieces. But Mr. Kobayashi led me upstairs, where the most interesting clocks can be found (the top floor is open only in summer, for special exhibitions).

“This is called the old timepiece road,” Mr. Kobayashi said, leading the way along a hall lined with 17 long case clocks, sometimes called grandfather clocks. One of them, made in France in the 19th century, was an hourglass shape, decorated with painted cherubs, and more than two meters tall. (“When they’re around 150 to 160 centimeters tall, we call them grandmother clocks,” just a nickname, he said.)

At the end of the hall stood a bust of Mr. Honda. The collection still has the one piece that he made, Mr. Kobayashi said: a rolling ball clock.

“In Mr. Honda’s clock, a small brass ball moves from side to side in a zigzag groove,” the curator said. “When the ball reaches the end of the rail, it hits a lever, which uses mainspring power to change the inclination of the plate, moving the ball back in the opposite direction and advancing the second hand by 15 seconds.” In the course of a day, the ball makes 5,760 round trips, he said.

“Mr. Honda traveled to obtain blueprints for this type of clock,” Mr. Kobayashi said, “and he made it from just looking at a blueprint.”

Masamichi Nakano, a watchmaker in Kyoto, said he remembered being impressed with the rolling ball clock when he visited the museum more than 10 years ago, while he was still a student at the Omi watchmaking school in Saga Prefecture, east of Kyoto. “It was the first time I had ever seen a clock with this mechanism,” he said, “and this clock was also displayed in motion, so I spent the whole time observing its movement.”

From Chandeliers to Cars

Then came the Western Timepieces room, which includes clocks made in France, Switzerland and Germany as well as Western-style clocks made in Japan.

In the display was what is called a reverse clock. “It was a barbershop clock, as people look at it from the mirror,” Mr. Kobayashi said, asking me to look at it using the mirror in the room so I would see the numbers in the right orientation.

And up on the ceiling was a chandelier clock, an elaborate light fixture outfitted with a large clock that faced down into the room.

Other fun pieces included a flying ball pendulum clock, also known as torsion clock , which has a small brass ball attached to a wire that spins around and is topped, for no apparent reason, with an umbrella. The model was made in Japan during the Taisho Era (1912-26).

Next to it was a swing clock, made in the same period, in which a ceramic figure of a child sitting on a swing moved up and down under the timepiece. Near it was a clock in the shape of a Rolls-Royce, and a wall clock in the shape of an adorable owl, made in Japan’s Showa Era (1926-89).

One wall was almost covered in cuckoo clocks, several from Germany but also some made in Japan by Citizen . And glass-covered displays contained pocket watches, some intricately set with gems or enameled, including one in the shape of a skull.

The museum’s room for wadokei — in English, “clock made in Japan” — is a completely different world.

Because Japan isolated itself from the rest of the world from the early 17th century through much of the 19th century, its watchmakers developed their own systems of telling time. “Days are divided into two, nighttime and daytime,” Mr. Kobayashi said. “And each of them is divided into six periods whose lengths change with the seasons.”

The room displays about 20 clocks that use the system, each featuring triangular bases and dials adorned with the 12 Chinese zodiac signs; each hour is associated with a zodiac sign. Mr. Kobayashi said they were made during the Edo Period (1603-1868), when “only wealthy people could afford those clocks back then, such as daimyo,” the feudal lords.

(While the timekeeping system is not commonly used in Japan today, the independent watchmaker Masahiro Kikuno , who lives in Funabashi, in Chiba Prefecture, makes wristwatches using it.)

To me, an incense clock from the mid-Edo Period was the most fascinating piece in the room. Invented in China, it measures time by burning powdered incense along a pre-measured path. “They are still used at temples today,” Mr. Kobayashi said.

It was just one more example of the museum’s working clocks, a distinction that the curator said the collection has had since its earliest days: “For Mr. Honda, clocks are worthwhile if they are working. That was very important for him.”

Bizarre video footage captured the moment three East African runners appeared to wave a Chinese athlete ahead of them during the Beijing Half Marathon on Sunday, allowing him to win first place.

Chinese distance runner He Jie crossed the finish line a mere second ahead of Ethiopian Dejene Hailu Bikila and Kenyans Robert Keter and Willy Mgnangat, video taken during the final hundred yards of the race revealed.

Footage of the strange race’s final moments shows the three African runners clumped together, seemingly slowing down on purpose.

One of the men can then be seen extending his arm outward as if signaling for the other two to remain behind him and allow He to pass.

All four then race alongside each other before He crosses the finish line first.

He won the 2024 Beijing Half Marathon on Sunday with a time of 1:03:44, while the three other men tied for second with a time of 1:03:45.

The three other runners can later be seen congratulating He, who is regarded as one of China’s top runners.

“I have never participated in a half marathon before, so this time I wanted to set a personal best [performance],” He told reporters after the race, according to Global Times.

He noted that he considered the event a training session ahead of the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11.

“Now I am fully preparing for the Paris Olympics; please believe in Chinese athletes. I hope to showcase Chinese speed in Paris and let the world see the Chinese speed,” He said.

The event coordinators have not commented on whether the African runners purposefully allowed He to prevail ahead of them.

The Huaming Landscape Park opened in early May just a short distance from the Botanichesky Sad (Botanical Garden) metro station, near the business center of the same name.

The park covers more than 5.2 hectares, making it one of the largest Chinese-style parks outside of China (and the largest in Europe). The idea dates back to the early 2000s, but has only been realized now. 

The park's architecture consists of three zones: traditional pavilions with a pond at the center,  pedestrian parts with wooden paths in the forest, and a utility part.

At the entrance, visitors pass through an archway with lanterns and mystical creatures from Chinese legends.

Not far from the main entrance is a monument to the Chinese philosopher Confucius. There are several cozy gazebos and a pavilion where tea ceremonies and other events can be held. 

All the objects bear poetic Chinese names: Linglong Pond is “the pond of refinement”, Ziyun Arch is the “arch of the purple cloud”, Basian Bridge is the “bridge of eight celestials”, and so on.

The most attractive photo area is around the artificial pond with willows, which literally makes you  feel like you’re in China!
