Review: Regent Seven Seas Explorer
Reviewed by Jessica Puckett
What is the line? Regent Seven Seas
Name of ship? Seven Seas Explorer
Passenger occupancy? 746 passengers
Itinerary? Central America, through Mexico, Honduras, and Belize
Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for? Regent Seven Seas is known for its luxe ships and amenities. The line has some of the largest suites at sea, with spacious verandas and bathrooms with marble-trimmed tubs. It’s also known for its swanky onboard art collections.
Tell us about the ship in general: It may have been built in 2015, but Seven Seas Explorer still feels as modern and fresh as many lines’ newest launches. Spaces on board are gracious and formal, with striking chandeliers made of crystal and hand-blown glass, as well as a world-class art collection featuring paintings by Picasso and Miró. There’s plenty of space and activities to keep passengers entertained across its 10 decks, but with less than 800 passengers, it’s a good middle ground for travelers who don’t love being in a crowd.
Who is onboard? Passengers on Seven Seas Explorer are mainly older couples and retirees, with a few honeymooners and several solo travelers sprinkled throughout as well.
Describe the cabins: Every stateroom on Seven Seas Explorer is a suite with a private balcony. Even the smallest are some of the most spacious at sea, with king-size beds, a lounge area, a double-bathroom vanity, and separate shower and tub—a rarity on cruise ships. The balcony is large enough for a chaise lounge and a table and chairs to enjoy a glass of wine (or maybe the complimentary bottle of Champagne left by your cabin steward upon arrival).
Tell us about the crew: The ship’s crew were white-gloved and formal; whether you’re ordering a four-course surf-and-turf meal in Prime 7 or you’re asking your cabin steward for a cup of peppermint tea before you go to bed, expect every detail to exude the ultimate hospitality.
What food and drink options are available on board? Seven Seas Explorer has 10 restaurants and bars: two main dining restaurants and three specialty restaurants. The specialty offerings include Prime 7, a premium steakhouse; Chartreuse, which specializes in modern French fine-dining; and Pacific Rim, a sleek Asian-fusion concept. Each specialty restaurant requires a reservation but does not cost extra. The standout for me was Pacific Rim, which serves decadent dishes like miso black cod wrapped in hoba leaf, Chinese barbecue pork ribs with char siu sauce, snow crab, and crispy duck spring rolls. One of the main dining options, Compass Rose, is no slouch either, with three-course seated table service and Versace tableware. There’s also a pool buffet, coffee shop, and breakfast buffet that transforms to an Italian outdoor restaurant for dinner.
As far as bars and lounges go, Seven Seas Explorer has you covered. Dip into the Meridian Lounge for a pre-dinner aperitif, hors d’oeuvres, and live piano music, or stop into the Observation Lounge for cocktails and dancing. The Connoisseurs' Club is a perfect spot to grab a cigar and a nightcap while chatting with fellow passengers until the wee hours. But, I think my favorite place to grab a drink was the pool bar, where tropical tipples are served in the sunshine around the ship’s striking plunge pool.
Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting? The spa is certainly worth a visit on a sea day, or on a day when you might not feel like going into port. The treatment rooms are serene and secluded, and I received a top-notch massage. The spa also has amenities open to everyone on board at no charge, including an aromatherapy steam room, chill room, and infrared sauna. Right behind the spa on the aft deck of the ship is a small deck with an infinity pool, the perfect place to soak and watch the sunset after a relaxing treatment.
Activities and entertainment Regent’s fleet offers Broadway-caliber shows backed by a live five-piece orchestra in its plush Constellation Theater. Smaller-scale piano performances and the like also take place nightly in bars and lounges throughout the ship. On the sports deck you’ll also find a pickleball court, ping pong table, shuffleboard, putting green, and netted driving range bay.
How was the experience for families? There seemed to be relatively few children on board, but the Club Mariner Youth program features kids’ programming like dance parties or mini-putt tournaments for children ages five to 17.
Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out? Our voyage sailed roundtrip from Miami, calling upon Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Harvest Caye, Regent parent company Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in Belize. Roatan was a particular highlight, as it’s a destination that’s complicated to reach if you’re not cruising. There was enough time in the day at port to soak up the gorgeous white-sand beaches, have a tour through the tropical forests, and sample local ceviche.
Are there any stand-out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise? Every guest receives a Regent reusable water bottle, and the ship has plenty of refilling stations scattered around.
Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking. If you’re looking for a cruise that offers a sense of elegance and pampering, a voyage aboard Regent Seven Seas Explorer is for you.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer review: luxury to the ends of the Earth
All-suite and all-inclusive – the Explorer is up there with the world’s best cruise ships
- Newsletter sign up Newsletter
The world of high-end cruising is no stranger to superlatives. Each new ship takes to the seas flanked by an armada of adjectives hailing the finest dining, glitziest entertainment and fanciest suites – but the Regent Seven Seas Explorer outdid them all. When she made her debut in 2016, she was proclaimed by her creators “the most luxurious cruise ship ever built”.
Six years later, how does the claim hold up? The facts and figures certainly provide some justification: the ship’s complement of 548 crew lavish their attention on the residents of just 373 suites – an enviable ratio even at the top end of the cruising market – and each cabin comes with a private balcony. The bathrooms are, collectively, clad in more than an acre of marble, more than 500 chandeliers adorn the ship’s ceilings and the walls are lined with 2,500 works of art, one of them an original Picasso.
70 best holiday ideas for your travel bucket list Around the world in 245 days on the Ultimate World Cruise
Yet the opulence extends well beyond fixtures and furnishings. The food (see below) is impressive by any standards, and exceptional given the challenges and constraints of serving a large number of people at sea. But the real luxury is space. On a recent sailing from Athens to Istanbul, the ship felt roomy and relaxed, even with most cabins occupied. There’s a good reason for that, said Luxury Travel magazine: “Explorer has one of the highest space-to-passenger ratios in the industry.”

All that comes at a cost, of course. Later this year, Explorer will embark on a seven-night voyage from Canada to Alaska, for which the entry level price is £6,539 per person. That is, however, likely to be the full cost of your holiday: it includes return flights, full board, transfers between the airport and port, as many shore excursions as you wish – and even gratuities for the staff delivering five-star service in some of the world’s most inhospitable latitudes.
Even the smallest cabin on Seven Seas Explorer comes with a queen-sized bed, a separate living area with a sofa and desk, and an eight-square-metre private balcony. All the rooms are luxuriously appointed: thick carpets, marble surfaces and hardwood furnishings complete the five-star feel.
Ascending classes of suite add more space and more onboard privileges, all the way up to the spectacular regent suite. Four times the size of the average British home, it spans the top deck and offers panoramic views from its wraparound balconies. Facilities include an in-room spa with sauna, steam room and solarium – and a Steinway grand piano built specifically for the suite. Guests staying in what Regent describes as “the most luxurious address at sea” are treated to a private caviar service, a cocktail party for eight guests, a personal butler and guaranteed restaurant reservations.
Restaurants, bars and entertainment
Regent’s approach to dining sets it apart from many other cruise lines. With six restaurants, each offering a different a la carte dinner menu (as well as 24-hour room service), your only problem is likely to be food-related fomo. Three of the restaurants – the Pool Grill, the Italian themed Sette Mari and Compass Rose, which serves international classics – are open to all-comers. Reservations are required at the other three: the pan-Asian themed Pacific Rim, the opulent Prime 7 steakhouse and Chartreuse, where French favourites come with a modern twist.
The quality and variety of food on offer is remarkable, and all of it, including fine wines, are included in your fare. So too are drinks at any of the ship’s numerous bars, each of which has its own character. The glass-sided Observation Lounge, for example, is the ideal venue for a champagne cocktail at sunset, while the elegant Explorer Lounge lends itself to an after-dinner scotch.
Live music is laid on most evenings, not only in the bars but also the Constellation theatre, where the Regent Symphony Orchestra accompanies a variety of singalongs, musical revues and other performances. Karaoke night, another crowd-pleaser, takes place in one of the (well sound-proofed) lounges.
Excursions and activities
The programme of excursions depends, naturally, on where your cruise takes you, but whenever the ship is in port you will have a range of trips to choose from. Between Athens and Istanbul, tours included a guided visit to the archaeological site at Philippi, a small-boat trip to the uninhabited island of Rhenia and its picturesque beaches, and a river cruise down the Bosphorus, among many, many others. In Alaska, excursions include whale watching, glacier trekking, small-boat trips through fjords and sightseeing tours through mountains and forests. Private or small-group excursions are available at extra cost, as are helicopter and seaplane trips on some voyages, but the rest are included in the fare.
Practicalities
Regent Seven Seas Explorer will spend much of 2023 in Asia, Australasia and Alaska. The Tongass Exploration voyage, departing 6 September, will cruise from Vancouver to Seward over seven nights, with fares from £6,539 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.
Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.
Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.
Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.
The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.
U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Spin the bronze Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel as you enter the restaurant and be sure to sample the miso black cod. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

Ship Review: Seven Seas Explorer
Grand entrance, see why regent’s seven seas explorer is a ship of superlatives.
By Fran Golden
As a journalist, you’re not supposed to believe such marketing speak as “the most luxurious cruise ship ever built,” right?
Except here’s the thing: Compared to other cruise ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ new 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer feels, well, palatial. Then there’s the fact that the all-suite, all-balcony ship has, up on Deck 14, a mansion-sized suite that goes for $10,000 per night — and comes with its own spa. It’s by far the fanciest suite at sea.
Luxury on the 55,254-ton Seven Seas Explorer , the largest in the four-ship Regent fleet, is not about subtlety. It’s about carefully designed spaces, both classic and opulent, that express that this vessel was built for those with the finest of tastes — and the budgets to match.
Decadent Décor
Frank Del Rio, president and CEO of Regent’s parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, had a clear idea of where he wanted to go with this new ship: It would be a trophy ship for the “one-percenters of the world,” a symbol that wealth is back in vogue.
The line’s customers, he said, have a net worth of more than $2 million, are mostly older Americans, and are a loyal crowd, with many repeat guests on every sailing. They may be too proudly low-key to show up to dinner wearing 6-carat diamond earrings (Regent doesn’t do formal nights), but they definitely love luxury.
Indeed, no stone has been left unturned aboard Seven Seas Explorer — literally. The ship has an acre of marble, half of it Carrara, and another acre of other stone laid out in intricate patterns. Then there are the soaring ceilings that are topped by sparkling chandeliers, hundreds of them in hand-blown Czech crystal and glass, even in guest hallways.
Stunning original artwork includes eye-catching abstract paintings commissioned for the ship from renowned Spanish artist Eduardo Arranz-Bravo. Picasso, Miró, and Chagall are in the mix, too. Different styles are represented in Seven Seas Explorer’ s décor — everything from Art Deco and Art Nouveau to country club and modern — and it’s all very tasteful.
Seven Seas Explorer is a ship where champagne flows freely; caviar is help-yourself at breakfast on select mornings; dinner menus feature always-available lobster and filet mignon, and tables are decorated with Versace chargers and butter plates; and an international crew of 552 is tasked with caring for guests’ every needs.
An Inspired Vision
Art and design are passions of Del Rio, who said his inspiration for Seven Seas Explorer came from a magazine photo of a hotel corridor, which he said perfectly captured an attitude he wanted for the new ship. Del Rio showed the picture to the three firms hired to work on the newbuild project — Tillberg Design AB, ICRAVE and CallisonRTKL — and the designers immediately got what he was going for.
“It signified things to us like quality, level of finish, stylistically the direction that ship needed to go,” said Greg Walton, vice president, CallisonRTKL.
Armed with a photo and a ship that topped $450 million, the designers set out to create an ambience as fine as any grand European hotel. Del Rio says he can’t even remember what hotel was in the photo, but that the salon area leading to the Compass Rose restaurant best reflects what he was looking for.
“It reminds you of the great hallways of the classic European hotels,” said Del Rio. “The marble floors and walls, and that great chandelier. It’s a grand entrance with a lack of clutter, and it’s where the ship’s space and volume really begin to show.”
Asked to describe the ship in one word, Del Rio said it would be “timeless.”
“We hadn’t launched a new ship in 13 years, so the new one couldn’t be just a regular cookie-cutter upscale ship,” he said. “It had to be something extraordinary, something to make a statement, something to shine a real bright light on the Regent brand.”
Gleeful Designers
If you’re a designer, can you imagine anything better than working with a cruise line executive whose vision involves wanting the best of the best? Aboard a pre-inaugural sailing, the ship’s designers were downright giddy talking about Seven Seas Explorer’ s extravagances.
This is a ship where quality French and Italian fabrics abound; where gold leaf mosaics are part of the décor in the new French restaurant, Chartreuse; and where hand-blown Murano sconces add supper club classiness to the theater.
“Working with Murano glass and other luxurious materials really helped us express our design,” said Kim Lanza, a designer at ICRAVE. “The sky was the limit for our design and we really appreciated that. In the design world, we don’t see that every day.”
Walton added that he was surprised when Del Rio even green-lighted his request to spend $500,000 for a Tibetan-style prayer wheel outside the new Pacific Rim restaurant. The cast-iron sculpture was so heavy it required steel reinforcement below, he said.
Sweet Dreams
Seven Seas Explorer boasts amazing suites where you could happily take up residence for weeks or months. But the splashiest of them all is the 4,443-square-foot, two-bedroom, three-bathroom Regent Suite, where — for $10,000 per night — you get bragging rights that include sleeping in a $90,000 Savoir No. 1 bed that cost another $60,000 to install and outfit with luxury pillows and linens.
Yes, this is an extraordinary space. The master bath includes golden faucets, a private spa with steam and sauna, and the significant perk of unlimited complimentary en-suite treatments from the Canyon Ranch SpaClub. The living room features a $250,000 one-of-a-kind Dakota Jackson–designed Steinway Grand Maroque piano. There’s an open-air hot tub, a private indoor observation area with better views than the captain’s, a private butler, and a car and driver at each port of call.
As sweet as this suite is, no one on Seven Seas Explorer is likely to complain about his or her digs. Everyone gets room to spread out; the rest of the suites range from 307- to 2,108-square-feet, and many have oversized balconies. Marble bathrooms are stocked with L’Occitane Mer & Mistral bath amenities, and Penthouse-level and higher suites also come with butler service.
All-Inclusive Luxury
With three other luxury ships in its fleet, Regent already stood out in the cruise industry as having the most all-inclusive product. Air, hotel stays, shore excursions, gratuities, premium wine and alcohol, and even Wi-Fi are included in the cruise fare.
But besides being an attention-getter in terms of space and luxury, Seven Seas Explorer adds features such as the line’s first hands-on Culinary Arts Kitchen cooking school (classes for up to 18 guests on topics such as Majestic Mediterranean are $89). Other new foodie features include Pacific Rim, where the menu focuses on pan-Asian dishes including sushi and curries (try the duck spring rolls). Chartreuse focuses on classic French with a modern twist (the escargot comes in a ragù).
The entertainment lineup brings new shows that were developed by the Norwegian Cruise Line entertainment team, including the whole first act of the Tony Award–winning musical A Day in Hollywood , featuring songs from the 1930s (“Thanks for the Memory,” “Over the Rainbow”) and tap dancing; and a Burn the Floor dance show themed around 1964 and the rise of Beatlemania.
And since the cruise execs didn’t want the new “world’s most luxurious ship” positioned too far ahead of the rest of the fleet, the line is in the midst of a $125 million refurbishment program for its other ships: Seven Seas Navigator just received a $41 million upgrade, and is showing off a sparkling and more contemporary look; Seven Seas Voyager follows this fall; and Seven Seas Mariner will be next spring.

A Royal Send Off
If you’re going to make a splash with a new luxury ship, you can’t get much more glamorous than an evening christening in Monte Carlo, a pierside ceremony with huge yachts, and the city’s stunning seafront as a backdrop.
The only thing that might top that would be, oh, the attendance by royalty — in this case the ship’s godmother, Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco, and her husband Prince Albert II of Monaco.
At a black tie ceremony in July that was attended by 700 invited guests, the Princess, elegant in her white gown, cut a red velvet ribbon sending a Primat bottle of Veuve Clicquot smashing against the ship’s hull. Then followed a 40-minute private performance by world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Taste and class was on display.
