dalat coffee tour

  • A tour for coffee lovers in Da Lat

Handpicking berries on the K'Ho farm. All photos by Christian Berg

A sensuous, full-cup fragrance announces the arrival of your first cup of K’Ho coffee. Take a sip. You’ll find the flavour is generous but balanced, rich with rounded notes of caramel and almond. It’s nothing like the bold and bitter robusta usually served across Vietnam, the strongest cups of which can turn you euphoric to despairing within an hour. This coffee rolls smoothly across the tongue, flicks on tiny switches in the brain, and fills the nose with pleasure.

Welcome to the K’Ho Coffee Farm and Roastery , where outstanding coffee is an everyday thing. The farm owes its success to an enterprising family, and a trove of heirloom Arabica cultivated from seeds brought to Đà Lạt  a century ago. The farm’s half-day workshops -- which follow traditional methods of processing from tree to cup -- are easily among the best coffee experiences in the country. Prepare to do a little work, drink a lot of coffee, and learn something entirely new.

Vietnam’s first coffee trees.

Nestled on the slopes of Langbiang Mountain, the garden cafe at K’Ho Coffee Farm is surrounded by rustling coffee trees. Deep in the soil, the roots share a history stretching back to the late 1800s. The French were the first to bring Arabica seeds to Vietnam from Africa. In 1912, the colonisers founded a resort town for themselves in Da Lat City, 10 kilometres away, and enlisted the ethnic K’Ho minority in the area to tend their coffee trees.

The K'Ho had essentially become Vietnam’s first coffee farmers.

The K’Ho (or Ko Ho) are a nomadic minority, one of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. In the past, the K’Ho often built their hamlets in remote highland regions. K’Ho families live mainly off the land, and practice a rich culture of craft weaving, folklore and music. Maps show the K’Ho were cultivating the fertile soil around Langbiang Mountain before the arrival of the French. By the early 1900s, the K'Ho had essentially become Vietnam’s first coffee farmers.

dalat coffee tour

Somewhere in the 1940s, K’Ho farmer Brai Co Lieng got his hands on Arabica seeds from the French coffee trees, and sowed them in his family farm at the base of the mountain. The Co Lieng family maintained the crop, but it was only many years later that fourth-generation coffee farmer Rolan Co Lieng would find a way to grow it into a sustainable business. With the help of her family and husband, an agricultural engineer from the United States, in 2012 Rolan founded the K’Ho Coffee cooperative, which grows, roasts and sells coffee descended directly from the Old World coffee seeds.

Updating the family business

Arriving at the K’ho farm in Bonneur’C Village, the first thing you’ll notice is how rustic it feels. Coffee seeds dry on screens outside the gift shop. Inside, the shelves are strewn with ethnic textiles, colourful crafts, and bags of richly scented beans. A wooden hut in the garden serves espresso and pour-over coffee with a view of Langbiang’s mountain farms.

Rolan’s family, including her brother DuLick Moul, run the business out of their home. The co-op provides work for 50 ethnic K’Ho families. Together they grow, process, and sell extraordinary Arabica coffee using only organic farming practices. With roasting and selling done by K’Ho Coffee, farmers receive a better income than they would through a middle man, and commit to follow agroforestry techniques that protect the environment.

coffee tours in vietnam

It’s a fresh way to run an age-old industry, and the proof is in the product. K’Ho coffee consistently ranks in the high specialty range (from 84 to 89) in cupping tests. To learn what’s involved in making a world-class cup of coffee, you only need to spend a morning at the village farm.

A hands-on approach

There are at least 15 steps to the creation of K’Ho coffee. After a quick introduction to the farm, take a walk between the coffee trees to see the berries up close, learn about the varieties of Arabica, and see agroforestry in action on K’Ho farms. Later, the guide will show you each stage in the process of coffee-making, employing the same methods the K’Ho have used for years.

The proof is in the product.

K’Ho Coffee uses three types of processes: washed, natural, and honey. The coffee is selected and harvested by hand, wet-milled on site, and after fermentation is left to dry for up to 20 days. When the time comes, hulling is done manually using a wooden mortar and pestle and the chaff separated by winnowing. Your biggest challenge may be sorting the seeds, which requires a sharp eye and careful hand. Only the best, unblemished seeds will make it to the gratifying steps of roasting, grinding and cupping.

vietnam coffee tour

Throughout the workshop, the K’Ho guide offers small insights — a bite of a berry, an explanation of a term — that expand the appreciation of the work. The tour culminates in some very rewarding moments of brewing and tasting. Carry your cup to the garden cafe to savour your coffee in Dalat’s springtime sun. The fact that your coffee is sustainably grown, cleanly processed, and supporting local farmers is an enriching thought. Another thought: It’s delicious. You’ll probably want to grab a few bags before you go.

Dalat Coffee Tours – How to Savour Dalat’s Growing Coffee Culture

This post may contain paid links. If you make a purchase through links on our site, we may earn a commission.

Dalat coffee tours are fast becoming a must-do experience in the Central Highlands of Vietnam – the world’s second largest coffee producer after Brazil, the world’s largest grower of Robusta coffee, and a producer of fine Arabica, grown in the country for 150 years.

Dalat coffee tours are becoming increasingly popular, among foreign travellers as much as local visitors, and it should be no surprise seeing Vietnam is the world’s second largest coffee producing country and the Vietnamese are keen coffee drinkers.

I’ll never forget noticing on our first trip to Saigon years ago how there seemed to be a small tea or coffee stall on every block – typically tucked into an alleyway entrance – where locals squatted on tiny stools sipping black tea or coffee. The coffee, served in glass mugs or tumblers, was more often than not, a ca phe sua da (cà phê sua đa), a thick, muddy, chocolate-tasting coffee with condensed milk.

While the coffee stalls still exist in Saigon, these days there’s a sleek café on every block. If it’s not one of Vietnam’s Starbucks-like (only better) home-grown franchises, such as Highlands Coffee , it’s a café with a retro vibe or semi-industrial design. And they’re packed with coffee sippers from early morning until late at night.

While the old coffee houses and stalls made their filtered coffee with Robusta beans, which comprise 95% of Vietnam’s production, the newer breed of cafés offer pour-over and cold-brew using superb Vietnamese Arabica beans. While thought to be a more recent introduction by many who know Vietnam for Robusta, Arabica has actually been grown in the country’s higher altitude mountains for 150 years.

As most of Vietnam’s coffee is grown in and around Dalat it was only a matter of time before Dalat coffee tours began to be offered. We tried the two coffee experiences below on our last trip to Vietnam and we’ll test out more on the next.

If you’re heading to Dalat, see our one day itinerary which includes our Dalat accommodation tips and our post on Dalat’s best street food tour .

Dalat Coffee Tours – How to Sample Dalat’s Growing Coffee Culture

La viet cafe, coffee growers and roasters.

Of all the Dalat coffee tours on offer, the best is perhaps by La Viet (Là Việt). Home to Dalat’s – and some of Vietnam’s – finest bean-to-cup coffee, La Viet is café, coffee producer, roastery, and barista training centre in one.

Located in a big, airy warehouse space with a cool contemporary style that could be in Saigon, Bangkok, Melbourne, or New York, but comes as a surprise in Dalat, La Viet is a must-do for serious coffee drinkers.

The big blackboard menus feature a long list of coffees you’d find on blackboard menus in any serious café around the world – don’t come here for a ca phe sua da or other traditional Vietnamese filter coffees, as there’s none on the menu. And don’t come for the food – when we visited there was little more than cakes and biscuits to accompany your coffee; it’s all about the coffee here.

Staff at La Viet offer regular, short, behind-the-scenes coffee tours of the facility, which tour operators and guides can book ahead if you’ve only got one day in Dalat and are on a tight schedule.

If you are serious about your coffee, you have more time and you’re travelling independently of a guide or group, there are two scheduled daily tours on offer for 500,000 VND per person.

On the morning tour (8-11.30am) you get to visit La Viet’s coffee farm to learn how coffee is planted and harvested, while on the afternoon tour (1.30-4.30pm) you get a more in-depth look at how coffee beans are graded, processed and roasted, and some hands-on experiences at roasting and coffee making.

As we only had one day in Dalat and were tight on time, we did one of the regular on-site behind-the-scenes coffee tours of La Viet’s facility and process, which, while fast and only provided a brief overview, was still fascinating. It’s a great introduction to those still learning about coffee.

Make sure you allow some time to browse their wonderful little boutique. You can buy La Viet coffee, coffee makers and accessories, along with local teas, honey, jams, Marou Chocolate, and more, and it’s all amazing value. And try their coffee of course.

Le Viet Coffee 200 Nguyen Cong Tru, Dalat. Short tours of the facility can be booked directly ore requested on arrival, but book ahead directly or through a guide or tour operator for the longer morning and afternoon tours.

K’Ho Coffee Cooperative

After a glorious day of clear blue skies, ominous storm clouds moved in just as we arrived at K’Ho Coffee on the hilltop of Langbiang village, home to the K’Ho ethnic minority peoples, 10kms from the centre of Dalat.

K’Ho Coffee was founded by local girl Rolan Co Lieng, a fourth generation coffee farmer, and her partner Josh Guikema, on a coffee plantation that has been in Rolan’s family since the 1860s.

Their aim is to produce and roast the highest quality Arabica green beans on the market in a sustainable, ethical and socially responsible manner while preserving the unique K’Ho culture, and they are indeed growing and roasting what’s now considered to be some of the finest Arabica coffee in Vietnam.

Of all the Dalat coffee tours on offer this is considered to be the most informative but also the most relaxed. This is definitely an experience for those who already know something about coffee growing and roasting.

We booked a short ‘tour’, which consisted of a casual yet detailed introduction to K’Ho Coffee and their 100% Arabica single origin coffee, the story of the cooperative, and their growing conditions and methods.

We were given our introduction to K’Ho in their charming little roastery cum boutique. K’Ho Coffee is a co-operative ran by the K’Ho community, which grows 100% Arabica varieties in the fertile, high-altitude, volcanic soils of Langbiang.

The coffee cherries are harvested by hand at their peak ripeness and after washing are dried on raised beds to maintain consistent moisture content. They are continually graded by hand at each stage of the process.

Following our intro, we were taken for a very short walk through the coffee garden, where cherries are growing on the trees, to their tiny café for a tasting. Wear flat shoes with grip that you don’t mind getting dirty: it’s slippery the day we visit, as it’s drizzling with light rain.

In a lovely, shaded spot, set amidst the coffee trees, we got to do a coffee tasting, and try their filtered coffee, espresso, pour-over coffee, and even their coffee ‘tea’ – all against the backdrop of Langbiang Mountain, visible when the rain stops and the cloud clears. It was easily some of the best coffee we’ve tasted anywhere, not just in Vietnam.

It’s possible to book longer half-day and full-day tours to get more of a hands-on experience of the farm and every stage of the coffee process, including how to select and roast beans, as well as learn more about how the work of K’Ho Coffee is changing lives for members of the cooperative.

The K’Ho are indigenous to the forests of Vietnam’s Central Highlands and are better known in Southeast Asia by their French name, the Montagnards. Most K’Ho are Christians and some have been persecuted for their beliefs.

Along with coffee beans, ground coffee, and coffee makers and accessories, you’ll find beautiful handmade K’Ho textiles, basket-ware and other handicrafts, made by the local artisans in the community, for sale in the K’Ho Coffee boutique.  The K’Ho village around K’Ho Coffee’s headquarters is worth a bit of a wander for the charming low-rise houses and the church at the centre of the square.

K’Ho Coffee Lang Biang Bonneur C Village, 10kms north of Dalat, foot of Lang Biang Mountain. Coffee tours and coffee tastings can be booked from Mon-Sat 8am-4pm on the K’Ho Coffee website.

Have you experienced any Dalat coffee tours? We’d love to hear your feedback and hear about any new Dalat coffee tours and would welcome tips in the comments below.

7 Best Cafes in Dalat: A Gourmet Guide to Vietnam’s Coffee Capital

Love coffee? Love food? Then you’ll adore Dalat , Vietnam’s coffee capital and rising culinary star. Here is my selection of the very best cafes in Dalat for coffee and food, plus a few recommendations for gastronomy-themed activities.

Beloved by local tourists but often overlooked by international visitors, Dalat deserves a place among Vietnam’s top destinations and a spot on any food-focused Vietnam itinerary.

Located in Lam Dong Province in Central Vietnam – about 300km from Saigon – the City of Eternal Spring has a mild climate and lush landscape. Dalat as its known today was originally established as a summer retreat by the French, and the cool temperatures continue to draw tourists looking to escape the heat.

The conditions are perfect for growing fruit (especially berries), wine grapes, cocoa beans – and, of course, coffee.

Vietnam is the world’s second-largest exporter of coffee beans (after Brazil), with most coffee grown in the Central Highlands region. Visitors to Dalat can see the entire bean-to-cup process on display in the city at a range of cafes, shops, coffee plantations and farms.

In recent years Dalat has gained a reputation for its retro vibe, making it a favourite destination for local photographers and yes, Instagrammers a-plenty.

A lot of Dalat cafes and restaurants have taken cue from their snap-happy customers and developed ultra-chic, thoroughly Instagrammable interiors. Honestly, Dalat has the highest concentration of beautiful cafes I’ve seen in Southeast Asia outside of Chiang Mai .

Coffee, stylish interiors, local wine and gorgeous food crafted from local produce – it all adds up to one thing: Dalat is a foodie’s paradise.

Coffee culture in Dalat

Whether it’s potent drip-coffee or world-class lattes, Vietnam loves its coffee. Judging by the sheer volume of cafes in Hanoi, Saigon and just about every other city in the country, it’s easy to assume that Vietnam has always been a coffee-drinking country. Like most other countries in the region, tea is the traditional beverage of choice .

Just how did a tea-drinking country grow to love coffee so much?

A man in Dalat, vietnam holds out three coffee beans in his hand.

When Vietnam was colonised by the French in 1887, they brought with them coffee plants and set up a vast plantation-style operation in the temperate Central Highlands.

The industry waned during the war and was revived under Doi Moi, Vietnam’s curious economic policy that permits private ownership under a Communist system.

A reunified and independent Vietnam has made a name for itself as one of the world’s most successful coffee producers. The quality of beans might not be as high as other countries (lower-value robusta beans are mainly cultivated), but the industry has supported thousands of Vietnamese, including those in rural areas, to lift themselves out of poverty.

Many plantations are family-owned (some are co-ops) and planted out with coffee bushes that can be dated back to colonial times. A rising number of boutique coffee brands are based in Dalat – many with their own cafes in town.

A traditional phin, Vietnamese coffee filter, at a cafe in Dalat, Vietnam.

As soon as I get out of a city in Vietnam, I expect to see landscapes characterised by massive rice fields. But not in Dalat. Here, it’s all about the dome-covered strawberry fields, vineyards, and vast coffee plantations that stretch to the horizon over Dalat’s gently rolling green hills.

As the coffee berries turn from green to maroon, for three months of the year (starting from around September), Dalat turns into a coffee boom town, with people pouring into town and out onto the fields to help with the harvest.

This is a great time to visit Dalat, when the city is full of energy and atmosphere.

A quick note on ‘Weasel coffee’

Cà phê chồn , more commonly known as weasel coffee, civet coffee or in Malaysia , k opi luwak – is wildly popular in Dalat. If you don’t know the story behind this utterly bizarre delicacy, production basically involves weasels ingesting ripe coffee berries.

Once the berries come out the other end whole and undamaged, they are collected (by hand), cleaned, and finally roasted. The digestion process apparently makes the end product smoother and more aromatic. Because of the time and effort involved, weasel coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world and fetches insanely high prices – up to 800 USD per kilo.

We’ve seen weasel coffee before, in Penang and other parts of Malaysia , but we had no idea that Vietnam is the biggest producer of weasel beans. Because of the astronomical value-add, the technique is used by a lot (but definitely not all) coffee producers in the Dalat area.

I won’t pretend to be an expert on this issue, but any mass-production process that involves using animals immediately raises a red flag for me. I’ve been told that the weasels are kept in coffee plantations where they are free to roam around and eat the berries – but I have no idea if that’s true, or if there’s more to the story .

I don’t endorse or recommend trying weasel coffee. In fact, I strongly urge you to give it a miss.

A visit to a weasel coffee farm is usually included as part of Dalat easy rider tours. If you have concerns, you should request to skip it.

Best cafes in Dalat: Where to find excellent coffee (and food!)

After three days eating and drinking my way around Dalat, here is my roundup of the best cafes in Dalat.

1. Biang Garden Restaurant

Comfy seating and a Buddha statue at Biang Garden Restaurant, a beautiful cafe in Dalat Vietnam.

Biang is by far our favourite cafe in Dalat. Recently renovated and relaunched in early 2018, the interior is exquisite; indoor-outdoor spaces are reminiscent of a luxe Balinese villa.

We also spotted some touches of Thai design (and a few menu items) that make me think the cafe is perhaps partly Thai-owned. Most importantly, the coffee is very good – the sprinkle of Saigon cinnamon on top of my latte was a very nice touch.

A cup of milky coffee dusted with cinnamon at a cafe in Dalat, Vietnam.

I wish I was a food writer so I could properly convey just how good the dining at Biang Bistro is. Our lunchtime meal was one of the best eating experiences we’ve had in Vietnam . It might go down as our best meal of the entire year.

The chef is British, and the menu features both Vietnamese and Western dishes. The emphasis is on fresh produce and big flavours, with plenty of vegetarian/vegan options available, all with a health bent.

Prices are a little higher than elsewhere in Dalat, so the set lunch at a very affordable 150K VND (including dessert) is a great option if you’re on a budget.

My lunch (above left, in the foreground) featured black bean hummus, black bean falafel, roasted cherry tomatoes, homemade pickles and slaw served with crispy grain flatbreads.

Not pictured: A huge platter of mango sticky rice (see, that hint of Thai again). We went all-out glutton and ordered a chocolate tart topped with edible flowers, too.

The food at Biang Bistro was so good, we went back for breakfast the next day. The pho we ordered was aromatic and delicate – perfect with a side of Vegemite toast and boiled eggs!

  • Location: 94A Ly Tu Trong
  • Opening hours: 7am–10.30pm daily

2. Le Chalet

Le Chalet cafe in Da Lat, Vietnam.

Located opposite the popular ‘Crazy House’, Le Chalet is an intriguing melange of French colonial and war-era Vietnam. Indoor and outdoor dining spaces are perfect for bistro-style dining, making it a great place for a long, lazy lunch.

The menu highlights fresh, healthy meals prepared with local produce (this is a running theme in Dalat). Vietnamese dishes and light Western meals (e.g. quiche with salad) are on offer, alongside fabulous smoothies and coffee.

  • Location: 6 Huynh Thuc Khang (opposite the Crazy House)
  • Opening hours: 7.30am–8pm daily

Leafy interior of An Cafe in Dalat, Vietnam.

One of many ‘rooftop’ cafes perched above Dalat’s main street, An Cafe is known for its rich, smooth coffee. The latte here was indeed one of the best I tried in Dalat.

The cafe is filled with leafy green plants, which gives it a very chilled, indoor-outdoor feel.

We also ate breakfast here – a basic toast with eggs, and a selection of Central and Southern Vietnamese specialty dishes are available. Everything is made from organic ingredients.

  • Location: 63 Ba Thang Hai
  • Opening hours: 7am–10pm daily

4. La Viet Coffee

Baristas behind the counter at the trendy La Viet cafe in Dalat, Vietnam.

Dalat’s one and only warehouse cafe, La Viet is the place to sample La Viet coffee, which is grown, processed and roasted locally. The warehouse is located a little bit out of the centre of town, but it’s well worth the effort to get up there.

The design and decor is spot-on; a little slice of Melbourne in Central Vietnam. The coffee is obviously the highlight, accompanied by simple Western brunch dishes prepared in the kitchen next door.

Bags of Vietnamese coffee beans at La Viet in Dalat.

The best thing about La Viet is that visitors can take a tour of the on-site production facilities and see the coffee sorting and roasting processes first-hand. A staff member will happily take you around without any notice (just inquire at the counter when you arrive).

There’s also a demonstration kitchen for coffee tastings, and a wonderful gift shop that sells La Viet coffee and other local products (more on that later).

In-depth field tours of the La Viet plantation can also be organised through local tour operators (ask at your hotel/hostel if you’re interested).

  • Location: 200 Nguyen Cong Tru

5. Dreamers Home And Coffee

Love coffee? Love food? Then you'll adore Dalat, Vietnam's coffee capital and rising culinary star. Here is my selection of the very best cafes in Dalat for coffee and food—plus a few recommendations for gastronomy-themed activities.

We stumbled on this sweet little cafe while exploring Dalat’s French Quarter . Maybe it was because of the rain, which started hurling down just as we found a table, but The Dreamer felt like the perfect place to curl and get stuck into a good book.

There are plenty of tastefully decorated, private indoor and outdoor spaces. Terrace tables have views of the Dalat Train Station, visible across the gorge.

The cafe serves smoothies, coffee and tea, including Dalat’s famous artichoke tea.

  • Location: B19 Duong Danng Thai Than
  • Opening hours: 7.30am–7pm daily

6. BicycleUp

Love coffee? Love food? Then you'll adore Dalat, Vietnam's coffee capital and rising culinary star. Here is my selection of the very best cafes in Dalat for coffee and food—plus a few recommendations for gastronomy-themed activities.

From an outstanding all-rounder to a dedicated coffee house. BicycleUp is a ‘pure’ coffee joint; a tiny hole-in-the-wall serving La Viet coffee and a small selection of teas and juices. The interior is styled with an eclectic collection of antiques and curios.

Menus are bound in old Russian schoolbooks; walls are lined with stacks of tomes, old bicycle parts, gramophones and Soviet cameras. The style is similar to Cong , but more crowded and less curated (in a good way).

  • Location: 82 Truong Cong Dinh
  • Opening hours: 7am–10.30pm daily (open until 11pm on weekends)

7. Tiem Ca-phe Co Bong & Tiem banh Totto-chan

Love coffee? Love food? Then you'll adore Dalat, Vietnam's coffee capital and rising culinary star. Here is my selection of the very best cafes in Dalat for coffee and food—plus a few recommendations for gastronomy-themed activities.

And the award for Dalat’s most Instagrammable cafe goes to… Yes, a major reason people visit Co Bong and Totto-chan is to take selfies – and who could blame them. This pair of adorable retro-themed cafes is located in downtown Dalat, behind the train station. Co Bong is styled as a war-era cafe, with plenty of vintage accoutrements.

Love coffee? Love food? Then you'll adore Dalat, Vietnam's coffee capital and rising culinary star. Here is my selection of the very best cafes in Dalat for coffee and food—plus a few recommendations for gastronomy-themed activities.

We unfortunately ran out of time to visit, so I can’t speak to their coffee or food offerings—but social media tells me that both specialise in Vietnamese-style drip coffee.

Totta-chan is also known for its cakes and baked goods. Located within walking distance of each other, you can easily pair them together.

  • Location: 238 Yersin & 59 Nguyen Trai
  • Opening hours: 8am–9.30pm daily

Where to eat in Dalat: More Dalat restaurants & cafes

Love coffee? Love food? Then you'll adore Dalat, Vietnam's coffee capital and rising culinary star. Here is my selection of the very best cafes in Dalat for coffee and food—plus a few recommendations for gastronomy-themed activities.

One More Cafe

A simple, no-frills cafe serving K’Ho Coffee and fresh juices, One More Cafe also does a tasty, simple breakfast. House-made seed toast with your choice of toppings (salmon and cream cheese; local compote) is a good light option.

There’s also more lavish English-style breakfasts – or you could go straight for the cake cabinet (I highly recommend the carrot cake).

Artist Alley

Formerly located in the same alleyway as BicycleUp, Artist Alley recently relocated to a two-storey house. The move has maybe detracted from the restaurant’s atmosphere, but the food still holds up. French-Vietnamese is the focus here, and they make a mean French onion soup (straight outta Paris).

The avocado salad with honey dressing is a house specialty; I recommend ordering it to share as it’s very avocado-heavy. This is a step up from the other cafes on the list, and perfect if you’re looking for something slightly more formal and romantic. The dining room is often filled with live acoustic music in the evenings.

If there’s Indian food available, we’ll try it. Our dinner at Ganesh was one of the best Indian meals we’ve had in Vietnam (and we’ve had a lot). Generous portions of mild curries, and a thick and buttery garlic naan were a highlight (be warned: the naan is mammoth!).

We were tempted to go back the next night, so good it was. Ganesh is located upstairs on Dalat’s busiest street, close to most hotels and hostels, making it a great option for an easy dinner.

Tiem Banh Coi Xay Gio

Cối Xay Gió is a popular Dalat banh mi chain with a distinctive (and yes, Instagrammable) yellow-painted facade. Local’s favourite and simply a must-try for a cheap snack in Dalat.

Dalat coffee plantation tours

If sipping on a cuppa sparks your curiosity about Dalat’s coffee culture and production, you can delve deeper into the scene with a coffee plantation tour. Here, you have two options: A dedicated Dalat coffee plantation tour, or a general city or countryside easy rider tour, which will undoubtedly include a stop-off at a plantation.

We’re not coffee aficionados, so we did the latter. But I wish I had taken a farm tour with K’Ho Coffee, a responsible coffee co-op owned by ethnic minority families. As mentioned, La Viet also offers tours of their coffee plantation located just outside Dalat city.

For more information about Dalat coffee plantation tours, check out this comprehensive guide from Grantourismo .

Where to buy coffee in Dalat

La Viet has a small shop attached to its warehouse cafe where you can buy packets of beans and ground coffee. They also sell non-edible souvenirs, including nifty coffee air fresheners made from coffee grounds, and branded merchandise (tote bags and tea towels).

L’angfarm is the premier chain of food shops in Dalat, with at least five branches across the city. They stock a huge range of jams and preserves, teas, macha products, nuts, dried fruit, sweets, coffee… And a million other products, all made from local ingredients. We were surprised how reasonably priced the shop is and ended up taking home a few bags of goodies to share with our friends and work colleagues in Hanoi.

Most cafes in Dalat sell bags of whatever coffee they serve. And if you leave things to the last minute, you can also pick up coffee and dried fruits at Dalat airport on your way out.

Are you a coffee drinker? Have you been to Dalat, or does it sound like a place you’d like to visit? Let me know what you think!

All of these cafes looks amazing! I’d love to go and visit them all

I didn’t know Weasel coffee was a thing in Vietnam! I know it’s popular in Bali, and I always try to avoid it, now I know it’s there too and can make sure I don’t accidentally give in!!

Oh interesting! I didn’t know it was big in Bali. Thanks for reading, Nadia!

We loved Dalat when we visited a couple years ago and found it so quirky, I also didn’t realise it was the food & coffee capital of Vietnam. All your suggestions and photos look and sound yummy. Consider me sold on returning to Dalat.

Just my humble opinion (after a year-and-a-bit in VN). I hope you make it back!

I had NO IDEA that Dalat had such an awesome coffee scene! I’m not a huge fan of “bean water” as I call it, but I have a ton of friends who are. Just shared this with one of my best friends so hopefully she can visit on her trip to Vietnam! Thanks for the insight and for including hours of op and addresses. So helpful!

Thanks so much for forwarding it on, Amanda!

The funniest part of this post was when you recommended sharing an avocado salad with honey dressing… that sounds like something that I’d want to order twice, not share! 🥑

Haha! I challenge you try and finish that salad! It was amazing. I’d definitely order it again.

Even as someone who doesn’t drink coffee (I know, I know!), I found this blog so intriguing! Loved learning about the Weasel coffee, I am also curious if there is more to the story. Your photos are stunning, I would love to check out these little cafes just for the ambiance (and hopefully tea!). And who doesn’t love good latte art?

I NEVER KNEW Vietnam was the second biggest exporter of coffee- as a caffeine addict I feel ashamed, but also happy to have discovered your blog to ensure this is on the list when I visit Vietnam! It sounds like the perfect place for me. Thank you for the informative post.

I am a coffee fanatic and am so impressed by this! We will be in Vietnam sometime next year and it seems like I definitely need to make sure we get to Dalat 😊

Absolutely, Hayley! Don’t miss it. Enjoy Vietnam!

Wow, I had never heard of “weasel coffee”, and would never have thought of asking to avoid that on a tour. Thanks for the heads up – the rest of your recommendations seem awesome!

Thanks for the feedback, Michelle!

I love this very detailed list of great coffee spots in Dalat! I also love the “weasel coffee” explanation…I had no idea! I’m pinning this post for later 😉

Cheers, Ashley! I hope it comes in handy.

I am a coffee loving Melbournian, so Dalat sounds like the perfect place to visit! My partner and I are planning a two month trip through South East Asia at the start of 2019, and your posts from Vietnam are providing some excellent suggestions and ideas – thank you!

Great to hear, Reanna! Dalat was an unexpected highlight for us—if you like coffee, you’ll definitely enjoy it! Two months should be enough time to add some ‘off-track’ places to your itinerary, too. I have lots of posts about Cambodia (I lived there for a year as well) so be sure to check those out!

Happy planning!

I am heading there this winter and I totally bookmarked this to use as a cheat-sheet! 🙂 You rounded up so many good places, my mouth is watering!

Ohhh lucky you! Winter will be chilly—perfect for cozying up in a cafe! Glad you found the post helpful! Enjoy Dalat.

Scenery, Serenity, and Sipping – Visiting a Dalat Coffee Plantation

Although we were excited to visit a Dalat coffee plantation, the experience was even better than expected. We traveled around Vietnam for a couple months before coming to Dalat. We were always big coffee lovers, but we became total addicts in Vietnam. So we jumped at the chance to see the source of our daily jolts of happiness at a Dalat coffee plantation .

Dalat coffee plantation in Da Lat, Vietnam. Central Vietnam in Southeast Asia

If you don’t know, Dalat is a mountain town in the central highlands of Vietnam. It’s in one of the prettiest areas of Vietnam with some of the best weather. Dalat city is nice, but the countryside is the main attraction with picturesque waterfalls, lakes, and wooded, rolling hills.

There are many great cafes in Dalat city that serve up some fantastic brews, but the best coffee experience by far is in the countryside, at a Dalat coffee plantation. The plantation is lovely and there’s an open-air terrace café with panoramic views. It’s scenic, serene, and perfect for sipping on the freshest coffee possible.

Did you know that Vietnam is the 2 nd largest coffee producer in the world? This really surprised us. Much of this coffee ends up in various blends. So if you’re a coffee drinker, odds are you’ve had some Vietnamese coffee, even without knowing it. And when you see the beautiful land where it grows, it’s little wonder that this coffee is so delicious.

Roaming the Dalat Coffee Plantation

Enjoying the Pretty Coffee Plants at the Da Lat Coffee Plantation in Vietnam.

We began by walking around the plantation and checking out the coffee plants. The coffee plantation itself was surprisingly pretty and fun to walk through. We’re embarrassed to admit how little we knew about coffee as a plant, even though we had millions of cups of coffee in our lives. We were pleasantly surprised by how vibrant and colorful the plants and berries were.

Coffee Berries at the Dalat Coffee Plantation in Da Lat, Vietnam. Central Vietnam in Southeast Asia

It really changed how we think about coffee. Before this, we associated coffee with the color brown, because that’s how we experienced it, as grounds or brew. After our visit, we associate coffee with a host of lively colors and connect it with the natural beauty that creates it. That was a cool side benefit of this visit.

Me Linh Coffee Garden

Me Linh Coffee Garden Staff and Terrace at the Dalat Coffee Plantation in Da Lat,Vietnam. Central Vietnam in Southeast Asia

After strolling through the fields, we made our way to the Me Linh Coffee Garden, which was right on the plantation. This was such an idyllic spot. The café has a big terrace with mesmerizing views of the countryside.

The coffee was super fresh, delicious, and came in so many varieties. And the scenery was beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing.

Scenic View from the Café at the Dalat Coffee Plantation in Da Lat, Vietnam. Central Vietnam in Southeast Asia.

We really got sucked into this simple moment and stayed much longer than planned. We had several cups while gazing at the hypnotic scenery.

Luckily we were on a private tour with our own driver, so we could change the itinerary on the fly. (By the way, we really recommend hiring a car and driver when touring the Dalat countryside.)

The prices here were also very reasonable for the quality of the coffee and the experience. Cups ranged from 20,000VND-60,000VND ($1-$3). Slightly more expensive than other places, but worth every penny.

We even learned what “fresh” really means in terms of coffee. The freshness of coffee has to do with the time between roasting and drinking. The shorter the time, the fresher the coffee.

Since they roast and grind the coffee beans on site, the coffee couldn’t be any fresher. It was so tasty, smooth, and indulgent.

Coffee Brewed by the Cup in a Phin filter at the Dalat Coffee Plantation in Da Lat, Vietnam. Central Vietnam in Southeast Asia

If you’re new to Vietnamese coffee, hot coffee is most often served with a mug-top filter. The Vietnamese call this a Phin. The grounds are placed inside the filter. The appropriate amount of boiling water is added. And the water seeps through, brewing the coffee.

The most famous version of Vietnamese coffee is served with ice and sweetened condensed milk. It’s called “Ca Phe Sua Da.” It’s our go-to coffee order in Vietnam, but at the Dalat coffee plantation, we also tried some hot, black coffee with delight.

How to Get to this Dalat Coffee Plantation

As mentioned above, we recommend a private tour when seeing Dalat’s countryside. There are many other great sites that are convenient to the Dalat coffee plantation and make for a nice day tour of the countryside.

Our choice was a car and driver through a company called Dalat Trip, but another great option is with Easy Riders if you fancy riding on the back of a motorcycle all day.

Like all prices in Vietnam, the price for these will depend on your bargaining skills, but you should be able to get a day tour for about $25-$35 pax/day. Your private driver should know how to arrange a schedule that avoids the crowds from the tour buses.

If you’re ok with tour buses, there are many options that include a visit to this Dalat coffee plantation. They are fairly inexpensive at $15 pax/day. The downside is the rigid itinerary that includes tourist traps and underwhelming stops.

You can also get here on your own via a rented motorbike. The address for Me Linh Coffee Garden is on google maps and other GPS apps, so it’s not tough to find solo.

Dalat Coffee Plantation in Da Lat, Vietnam. Central Vietnam in Southeast Asia

So if you’re a coffee drinker and in the Dalat area, don’t miss out on this Dalat coffee plantation. It’s a great opportunity to broaden your coffee horizon and drink some delicious brews in a gorgeous setting.

Have you been to a coffee plantation? Where and what did you think?
