Handcrafted Bourbon Adventures
Come Find Bourbon in Frankfort
You can’t visit Frankfort without trying a glass of bourbon. While close to many distilleries and experiences on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Frankfort plays host to four unique distilleries that offer a classic bourbon experience found nowhere else. All four distilleries are located within a few miles of each other and are easily accessible from wherever you stay.
Considered the oldest continuously operating distillery in the US and the most award-winning distillery in the world, Buffalo Trace Distillery has a 200-year-old bourbon recipe that has survived fires, floods, and tornadoes. On your way to taste their products, take one of seven different tours to learn about Buffalo Trace’s history, founders, and distilling process.
Castle & Key Distillery has an extensive history that dates back to 1887. Although it is regarded as the birthplace of bourbon tourism, Prohibition forced the then-named Old Taylor Distillery to close. It was reopened under a new name in 2018 after a much-needed restoration. Take a tour of the distillery and its sunken gardens to get a sense of the saga behind the bourbon.
Glenns Creek Distilling opened in 2014 and offers both group and private bookings to tour their facilities and taste their bourbon. Glenns Creek, abandoned like Castle & Key, used to be the Old Crow Distillery before owner David Meier restored it to its former glory with recipes that pay homage to the bourbon served by Old Crow.
If you’re looking to taste bourbon surrounded by country, check out Whiskey Thief Distilling Co.. Located on 127 acres of working farmland, this distillery lets you sample its bourbon straight from the barrel and even fill your own bottle after your tour. 2022 marked their tenth anniversary as a distillery – the perfect excuse to head over and try a glass of bourbon!
Buffalo Trace Distillery
Ancient buffalo carved paths through the wilderness that led American pioneers and explorers to new frontiers. One such trail led to the banks of the Kentucky River where Buffalo Trace Distillery has been making bourbon whiskey the same way for more than 200 years. Throughout the challenges of floods, fires, tornadoes and even Prohibition, the American family-owned Buffalo Trace Distillery has never compromised.
Buffalo Trace is the oldest continuously operating distillery in America, and the most-award winning! A sample of their spirits are Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Eagle Rare, Van Winkle, George T. Stagg, Blanton’s Single Barrel, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel, W.L. Weller and many more!
Although Buffalo Trace Distillery is not a stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you planned a Kentucky Bourbon Experience without visiting this iconic distillery! Seven different tours are offered, each is exceptional, all are complimentary and include tastings.

Castle & Key Distillery
In 1887, Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr built a new kind of distillery destination in Millville, Kentucky. Inspired by European architecture, the site featured a Castle, a classical Springhouse, and a Sunken Garden.
Prohibition forced the closing of the distillery in 1920. Over the next century, the property changed owners and occupants several times, eventually falling into ruin.
In 2014, the current founding partners began the long journey of restoration. They brought life back to the distillery, developed their brand, and we are so thankful for it!
The spirits selection at Castle and Key are “thoughtful in every detail, from grain to glass”. Some of their offerings include Small Batch Wheated Bourbon Whiskey, Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey, Restoration Rye Whiskey, Sacred Spring Vodka, and The Woolgatherer Gin. Visit Thursday through Sunday to experience a tour and tasting or stop by Taylor Station to enjoy a cocktail and the views of the grounds.
One of the first things you’ll notice when visiting Castle & Key Distillery is the beautifully restored castle, built in 1887.
Glenns Creek Distilling
David Meier, the owner of Glenns Creek Distilling , has always had a love for where things are made, how they are made, and the level of craftsmanship that went into their making. This love of creation was one of the driving forces behind his career in manufacturing and yearning to create something of his own.
He happened upon the Old Crow Distillery. Seeing the exorbitant level of craftsmanship that went into the old buildings and seeing the state that they were in after being abandoned for 30 years brought up a mix of sadness for the current state and intrigue for what it must have been like in its prime. David started to research the history of The Old Crow Distillery to get a better feel of what role the old distillery played in the bourbon industry and Kentucky. He recreated a new bourbon produced in the style of Dr. Crow; something that Dr. Crow would drink and approve of.
A few of the spirits Glenns Creek offers are S’OTIT Special Family Reserve Vodka, Café Olé Bourbon, Millville Malt, Hamilton Smoke, Kentucky Prohibition Rum, RYSKEY, OCD#5, and their latest, ¡Cuervito Vivo! ™ Bourbon. Be sure to visit to check out the other tasteful bourbons! Open Noon – 5 pm Sunday – Friday, 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday.
Always dreamed of creating your very own Bourbon. Now you can! At Glenns Creek Distillery, you CRAFT YOUR OWN BOURBON with The Bourbon Barrel Experience™!
Visitors have the chance to taste 5 spirits during their Glenns Creek Distilling experience.

Rebecca Ruth Candy Tours and Museum
The story of Rebecca Ruth began with two substitute teachers in their mid-twenties, Ruth Hanly (Booe) and Rebecca Gooch. After years of being in the education field, both women had come to the conclusion that they were not cut out for substituting and teaching. Instead, the young women ventured into the confectionary business after having received high praise from family and friends for the gifts of chocolates given during past holidays. It was in 1919 that Rebecca Ruth Candy was born! Through the hardships of Prohibition, Women’s Suffrage, World Wars I and II, and the Great Depression, Rebecca Ruth still stands strong at an incredible 101 years of operation.
Fast forward to present day, and Rebecca Ruth is still family-owned, (third generation) and most known for being the maker of the original Kentucky Bourbon Ball.
Rebecca Ruth Candy Factory experiences include the story of Ruth’s life, the history of Rebecca Ruth® Candy and “Edna’s Table”, a 12-foot curved marble slab named after an employee of 67 years. Include a stop into Rebecca Ruth for a different view of the bourbon industry. Be sure to taste the sample they offer -your tastebuds will thank you!
Rebecca Ruth Candy Factory is known for their invention of the Bourbon Ball!
Kentucky Gentlemen Cigars
Kentucky Gentlemen Cigars is offering hand rolled, Bourbon blended premium cigars, in the heart of Downtown Frankfort! Kentucky Gentlemen Cigars is a unique concept, both in location and product design. Some say Kentucky Gentlemen Cigar is a bit ambitious as most cigars are produced in Latin America. Kentucky Gentlemen Cigar sees a market with blends that not only are… not common yet filled with flavorings from our own Kentucky heritage including Bourbon, Whiskey, Moonshine or even Mint Julep, therefore someone can experience cigars available from nowhere else. When that’s not enough, “you can customize your own” blend of special cigar with varieties from all over the world. Kentucky Gentlemen Cigar is your cigar! Featured flavors include Blanton’s, Buffalo Trace, Moonshine, and Build Your Own.
Kentucky Gentlemen Cigar ships their product all over, but we encourage you to visit in person while you are in Frankfort. There is a bar onsite, serving select Bourbons until 4 pm Monday – Saturday and a very nice Humidor to explore while you are at it!

Kentucky Bourbon Distillery Tours
No matter your level of bourbon knowledge, you can learn a lot on a distillery tour. Most distilleries host tours and tastings; while themes vary, on most every tour you can expect to learn the history of the founding family and brand, glean insights into mash bill recipes and production techniques used, see the equipment that transforms grain to liquid, visit rickhouses to see aging barrels, and sip the results at a tasting bar. At key points, you’ll hear stills clanging and chugging, sniff sweet and sour mash, get a pleasant whiff of the evaporate known as the Angel’s Share, and taste America’s Native Spirit.
Reservations are recommended for distillery tours; typically, you can check available dates/times and book your reservation on the distillery’s website.

A Complete Guide to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
Everything you need to know to sample your way around the land of wild turkey and maker’s mark..

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail extends throughout the Bluegrass State from big cities to historic hamlets like Bardstown, which has been dubbed the Bourbon Capital of the World.

For whiskey lovers, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a bucket-list trip, full of opportunities to visit distilleries and learn about bourbon—plus, of course, plenty of sampling along the way.
Kentucky is the spiritual home of bourbon, an American whiskey made with at least 51 percent corn and aged in new, charred, white oak barrels. That said, many Kentucky distilleries also make other types of whiskey (like rye or American single malts) or other types of spirits. But if you’re headed to Kentucky, it’s a safe bet that you’ll find plenty of bourbon, first and foremost—including some pours you can’t find anywhere else. Here’s how to navigate the world of Kentucky bourbon.
What is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?
The official Kentucky Bourbon Trail exists under the auspices of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (who have trademarked the phrase), and it includes 18 distilleries, as well as 32 smaller distilleries designated as the “ Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour. ” This official trail doesn’t necessarily include every bourbon producer in the state. But it’s still a pretty comprehensive overview, and the KBT provides a useful way to organize a visit—including a website with plenty of maps and links. Those who prefer a hard-copy guide can purchase a Bourbon Trail Passport & Field Guide ($15) with similar info. Kentucky’s bourbon distilleries are sprawled across the state, with most of them within about 100 miles from Louisville, the logical starting point for the journey.
How long to spend
It’s possible to visit a good number of the best-known distilleries within three or four days. Most visitors use Louisville as a home base, spending a day or two exploring the city’s “Whiskey Row” and other distilleries within city limits. From there, it makes sense to drive about an hour east toward Lexington, perhaps visiting Wild Turkey, Four Roses, and Woodford Reserve, before returning to Louisville. The following day, head southbound toward Loretto, home of Maker’s Mark, stopping at Bardstown and its distilleries along the way. Expect to spend an hour or two at each distillery; visiting two or three distilleries a day is a realistic pace.
Quite a few are located farther afield, in more rural areas, meaning more travel time is necessary to get there. (Green River, in Owensboro, is furthest removed; it’s even in a different time zone, though it’s only about 100 miles from Louisville.)
For people who want to visit all 18 distilleries, the KBT recommends at least four days. However, a week to nine days might make for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience, particularly for those who want to visit craft distilleries along the way or make a detour to explore surrounding areas.
In addition, the KBT recommends at least a week to visit the Kentucky Craft Distillery circuit; many of the facilities are near the core KBT distilleries or en route. It’s worth doing a little advance planning and mapping to maximize visits.
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail consists of numerous well-known distilleries—and plenty of lesser-known spots equally worth a visit.

Which distilleries are on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?
There are 18 KBT distilleries —it’s essentially a who’s who of the bourbon names you’ll spot at a well-stocked bar or liquor store:
- Angel’s Envy
- Bardstown Bourbon Co.
- Evan Williams
- Four Roses Distillery ; Four Roses Warehouse & Bottling (two different locations)
- Green River
- Heaven Hill
- James B. Beam
- Maker’s Mark
- Old Forester
- Rabbit Hole
- Stitzel-Weller
- Town Branch
- Wild Turkey
- Wilderness Trail
- Woodford Reserve
How to get around
Within Louisville, it’s easy to reach distilleries on foot or via taxis or rideshares. Beyond city limits, you need a car to get around; particularly in more rural areas, ridesharing isn’t always available. To delegate the transportation and/or planning, consider booking tours with a company like the famous Mint Julep or Pegasus Distillery Tours . They’ll shuttle you or your group around; many of the tours focus on specific interests, like culinary or horse farm tours, or offer VIP access to tastings or other experiences. However you’re getting around, don’t drink and drive.
How to plan a distillery visit
Planning ahead is strongly encouraged. Many distilleries are closed during the week (most often Monday and/or Tuesday), and hours may vary, so check a distillery’s website before heading out. (Also: Note that part of Kentucky is in the Central time zone, so you may need to factor that in.) For those traveling with kids: Some places welcome all ages, while others are limited to those 21 years old and over.
Do you need reservations for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?
Not always, but it helps, particularly during the peak summer and fall tourist seasons. That said, many tours are reservation only and charge a fee. Most cost around $25, but that can range much higher when special bottlings or cocktails are involved, and they tend to run about 60 to 90 minutes.
In general, visiting two or three distilleries in a day is plenty. Most tours cover the same “how-bourbon-is-made” info, and especially if you’re sampling, it all starts to add up. But it’s well worth it for bourbon fans looking to learn about America’s native whiskey and snap up hard-to-find bottles to add to a collection.

Start in Louisville
Louisville is ideal as a home base for a bourbon tour: In addition to distillery experiences available within city limits, it’s also relatively central to Lexington, Clermont, and Bardstown and has plenty of appealing bars, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
Start with Whiskey Row, which is home to Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery (and its top-notch bar), Old Forester Distilling (keep an eye out for special whiskey drops here), and Angel’s Envy . From there, the NuLu district offers the modern design of Rabbit Hole Distillery and its second-floor Overlook bar, with drinks by the Death & Co. team. Grab a rideshare for the five-mile drive to West Louisville to tour the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery , which opened in 1935 but had been closed to the public for many years. (Attention horse fans: The Kentucky Derby Museum is nearby.)
Among the smaller Craft Trail distilleries nearby in downtown Louisville: Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. and Copper & Kings, an industrial-chic space that started as a brandy facility and has only recently begun producing bourbon. Look for the monarch butterfly garden out front and the rooftop restaurant/bar with sweeping city views.
When the distilleries close, continue bourbon tasting at Louisville bars like the Silver Dollar , a Bakersfield-style honky-tonk owned by whiskey expert Larry Rice; Trouble Bar , where you choose among flights curated by local experts; or the 1920s-inspired Neat Bourbon Bar & Bottle Shop .
Where to stay in Louisville
Consider a stay at Hotel Distil , a bourbon-themed hotel located in a historic building on Louisville’s “Whiskey Row”; the boutique-y 21c Museum Hotel is also home to stellar restaurant Proof on Main .
You could also try Galt House Hotel , a much larger venue with views of the Ohio River, or the genteel Brown Hotel , which dates back to 1923 and offers skyline views from the restored rooftop garden.
Day trip options from Louisville
Visit a couple of distilleries during each of these day trips with Louisville as a convenient home base, or combine them for a longer road trip. Here are a few potential options to build an itinerary.
1. Clermont
From Louisville, it’s about a 30-minute drive south to Clermont to reach James B. Beam Distilling—known for making Jim Beam, Knob Creek, and Basil Hayden, among others. They’ve been busy over at Beam: In 2022, the distillery cut the ribbon on a new $45 million “homestead experience.” The new space includes the Kitchen Table , a 5,000-square-foot restaurant and bar, and the Fred B. Noe Craft Distillery, a facility to explore new fermentation and distillation techniques.
2. Bardstown
Either starting out from Louisville or continuing on from Beam, head to Heaven Hill , the family-owned distillery that makes such legendary brands as Elijah Craig, Old Fitzgerald, and Henry McKenna, among many others. While the company’s new $200 million distillery is slated to open at the end of 2024, this remains a fine place to learn about bourbon production and snap up exclusive bottles.
See also two sleek, state-of-the-art newcomers: Lux Row Distillers and Bardstown Bourbon Company (the latter focuses on elaborate bourbon blends).
You’ll love strolling the grounds of the Maker’s Mark Distillery, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

3. Lebanon/Loretto
Maker’s Mark is on many a bourbon lover’s must-see list. Visit the distillery and tour the grounds, but don’t leave without dipping your own bottle in the iconic red wax.
This might be the endpoint of a route heading south through Clermont and/or Bardstown. Since the distillery is fairly remote from Louisville, plan to stay overnight—if possible, at the Samuels House , an Airbnb-style house rental owned by the family behind Maker’s Mark, stocked with a collection of whiskey memorabilia.
Add on a tour of the Kentucky Cooperage Visitor Center to learn how barrels are made, and see firsthand how they’re charred with a burst of flame—a key part of the bourbon-making process. (Note: You can also go directly from Louisville to Maker’s Mark by helicopter .)
4. Frankfort/Lexington
From Louisville, it’s also about an hour east to Frankfort, home of Buffalo Trace . Choose from several different themed tours of the sprawling facility, such as the “Old Taylor Tour,” which focuses on the legacy of E.H. Taylor, who revolutionized the bourbon industry; or a tour through the property’s arboretum and botanical gardens.
Continue on to Four Roses in Lawrenceburg, housed in a 1910 mission-style building, or Woodford Reserve in Versailles (pronounced “ver-sales”). Of note, Lexington, the “Horse Capital of the World,” is home to multitudes of thoroughbreds, so consider adding a horse farm tour to your itinerary.
5. Danville
About an hour south of Lexington, the picturesque Wilderness Trail Distillery is in the heart of the Bluegrass region. The distillery is a relative newcomer, having launched in 2012 and releasing its first bourbon in 2018. In that short time, it has garnered plenty of attention and is already expanding capacity. Starting with 44 acres, the distillery purchased another 124 acres in 2021, adding six new fermentation tanks and six new barrel houses.

Paul John Distillery
Hailing from the land of empire to independence, Mr. Paul P John was caught between the rugged coast of Scotland and the various hues of India. Charting his way through the narrow lanes of Scotland to investigate the country’s distillation processes and whisky culture, it occurred to him to embrace and yield a single malt made in India not just for the Indians to relish but for the whole world to experience. The result? “The Great Indian Single Malt.”
Established in 1992, John Distilleries became a leading spirits company within less than a decade and it continues to rise to new heights. Its creation, Paul John Single Malts, was launched in the United Kingdom in 2012, and was soon laureled by whisky connoisseurs around the world. The whisky critics continue to crown Paul John Single Malts with innumerable global awards, as consumers embrace these fine whiskies.

Adventures in Bourbonland, Part 2
Welcome back to the travelogue of my trip last week to Kentucky, the center of the bourbon universe. In the first part , I shared a little about our trip from Georgia to Kentucky and my impressions of Frankfort, the state capital, but I promised better stories. So here they are.
Friday was our first day of distillery visits. After a surprisingly good hotel breakfast, my brother Matt and I had to make a mad dash to Dunkin for coffee because housekeeping visited our room earlier than expected.
We had some time to kill before our first scheduled stop, so we made our way somewhat leisurely to the first destination. The Kentucky countryside is so breathtaking — and you go from town to open farmland quickly — that driving slower than usual becomes a joy.

Bluegrass Distillers at Elkwood Farm
Matt and his wife had been to Bluegrass Distillers in their downtown Lexington location, which is in a less-than-savory part of town. He told me that visiting their second location at Elkwood Farm was refreshing. We were early, so we had time to wander about the first floor of the antebellum farmhouse.
The whole facility fits the archetype of a rural Southern farm. Bluegrass Distillers has lovingly renovated the house, and the company is putting up more modern barns for production and barrel storage. Logan, the employee who hosted our tasting, told us that the company has to deal with the bureaucracy of working with such a historic property.
There was something special about drinking in a nearly 200-year-old farmhouse. Bluegrass Distilling's famed blue corn whiskey wasn't available, but I bought a bottle of my favorite bourbon from the tasting.
Buffalo Trace Distillery
We weren't able to schedule a tour since all of the tour spots had been booked, so we were at Buffalo Trace just for the gift shop. What shocked me as we pulled into the crowded parking lot was that we would have to wait in a Disney World-style line just to get into the gift shop!
An employee was giving out samples of the bourbon Buffalo Trace made in collaboration with country star Chris Stapleton, so I bought a bottle for my sister and brother-in-law. I also picked up a cocktail recipe book and a watermelon mixer and headed for the line.
The checkout line wound throughout the shop — again, it felt like Disney World. One employee stood at the end of the line with a sign indicating it. It was a fun visit to the shop, but I was glad to be out of the line when I was done. Matt and I had gotten separated, so I had to wait outside in the increasingly cold weather for him to check out. (I continually questioned my choice to wear a golf shirt and shorts even with a windbreaker.)
Whiskey Thief Distillery Co.
Once we left Buffalo Trace, we stopped for a quick lunch at White Castle and popped into another small distillery with a storefront for a tasting. Their bourbons were decent but overpriced, so we went back to the hotel for a few minutes before heading to another farm for a tour and tasting.
The design of Whiskey Thief's tour and tasting barn is meant for visitors to stay a while. The farm dogs wandered throughout, inviting guests to pet and play with them. An outdoor kitchen and bar offered small plates and cocktails, including frozen bourbon concoctions, and there were plenty of picnic tables for people to hang out.
Recommended: The Masters: Where the Food — and the Food Prices — Are Out of This World
Anyone who purchased whiskey from the distillery also filled his or her bottle straight from the barrel as well. It's a cool concept, but their products were awfully expensive. While we didn't buy anything other than a cocktail, I don't regret visiting Whiskey Thief.
Bourbon on Main
After Whiskey Thief, we went back to the room to get off our feet for a little while before deciding to venture back to downtown Frankfort for dinner. The downtown area was almost as dead Friday night as it was Thursday, but this time we were able to get a table at the one busy spot, Bourbon on Main.
We sat outside because by then the rain had stopped and it was a little more pleasant. Our table had a nice view of the Kentucky River as it flowed through downtown Frankfort. The meal was good, and the music was fun. We were glad to have been able to eat there, but it wouldn't have been worth Thursday night's hour-long wait.
House of Commons: A Bourbon Library
On Thursday night, Matt and I had walked by a bar called House of Commons, which marketed itself as a "bourbon library," so we decided to check it out Friday night. It was another remarkable historic building with an exquisite setting. Shelves of bourbon behind the bar reached the ceiling, and bartenders would scale those moveable library ladders to get the ones off the higher shelves.
House of Commons had an impressive list of bespoke cocktails, along with the usual suspects, but what I was most interested in was a bourbon flight. Our bartender (who reminded me of someone I know) told us that we could do a bourbon flight for anywhere between $20 and $250. I opted for a $20 flight, while Matt just had a single pour. The bartender asked me about my preferences and built the flight around them.
I noticed that he recommended Johnny Drum, the third bottle from the left in the photo above, to everybody, and it was my favorite of the four. As I was on the last taste of my flight, a man sat at the bar just to the left of me. He was British and chose an $80 bourbon flight, after which he engaged Matt and me in conversation for three hours, including buying us a round of Old Fashioned cocktails. All in all, it was a terrific night at a truly unique bar.

Incentives being offered for people to move to Kentucky’s capital
F RANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Through MakeMyMove , the city of Frankfort is offering people who are eligible several different incentives to move to the city.
Some of those incentives include $5,000 cash, a chance to mingle with the mayor, and a tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery. All incentives combined are worth an estimated $6,150.
There are several eligibility requirements to apply as well.
Those requirements include earning at least $100,000 annually, currently residing outside of Kentucky, and being able to relocate primary residence to Frankfort within six months.
Frankfort City Commissioner Kyle Thompson said the city started having discussions about remote worker plans in 2021, but it started up in 2023.
He said it’s a great opportunity for those looking for a new vision, outlook, or place to land, but it will take time to see change in the city.
“When you see, over the next four or five months, you will see a difference in the way things happen. Shelbyville, Woodford County, Scott County, they didn’t grow overnight. They worked hard and had 10, 20 year plans.” Thompson said.
He said through other programs, they’ve already seen many benefits.
With a vibrant downtown that continues to add restaurants, shops and hotels, Visit Frankfort is also happy to welcome new faces.
“People who live here bring friends and family, and that’s great for tourism. We get a lot of people who come into this office and they’re thinking about moving here. We’ve got a good cost of living, pretty good weather year round, so that is good too.” Robin Antenucci, Executive Director of the Frankfort-Franklin County Tourism Commission said.
Suzy Hosley, the Executive Director for Downtown Frankfort Inc. , says she’s also seen downtown become more vibrant with new places and their new events.
“With a lot of folks now, the trend is working from home and you can really live anywhere, you have quality of life in Frankfort but with low cost of living, so that’s a huge incentive for people to move here, but also the businesses as well.”
As Frankfort’s downtown continues to grow, the hope is to see its population grow along with it.
