The 2010 Dodge Journey crossover SUV is effectively a replacement for Chrysler's now defunct short-wheelbase minivans -- a family-friendly vehicle that's a bit more maneuverable than the regular Grand Caravan. The Journey does indeed fill this void in functional terms, offering lots of room for larger families and a number of pleasant convenience and technology features. The question is whether buyers will find its interior quality and driving dynamics sufficient relative to the ever-improving competition. After all, a journey is hardly worth taking if you're not going to enjoy the trip.

The Journey's strength is clearly its cabin functionality, where the influence of Chrysler's minivans is unmistakable. Its optional third-row seat sets it apart from two-row crossover SUVs, providing enough room for kids. The Journey is also loaded with clever, well-conceived minivan-style conveniences, from the Flip 'n Stow storage compartment under the front passenger seat to the Chill Zone glovebox beverage cooler. Other neat options include MyGIG, Chrysler's hard-drive-based navigation and entertainment system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch screen. If what you're after is a versatile interior at a reasonable price, the Journey certainly delivers.

Speaking of pricing, that's another of the Journey's strengths, as the base SE model costs about the same as a bare-bones five-seat family sedan. How does Dodge do it? Simple: It skimps on interior quality and performance. The Journey's cabin materials are no nicer than those of the dismal Dodge Caliber economy car, on which the Journey is based. As for performance, the base four-cylinder engine is slow and noisy, and the V6-powered SXT and R/T models aren't particularly swift either. Moreover, all Journeys feature ponderous handling and steering that instills little confidence, even by the workaday standards of this segment.

Overall, the 2010 Dodge Journey has a split personality. On the one hand, it has interior versatility and technology to spare; on the other hand, it's built like a cheap runabout and performs like one, too. Among competing crossovers, Toyota's RAV4 offers a third-row seat along with better performance, and the surprisingly enjoyable Kia Rondo is another model to consider. The larger, three-row Ford Flex starts at about the same price as a loaded Journey, and is superior in every way. And if you don't need the Journey's optional third row, virtually any two-row crossover SUV on the market will be more pleasant to drive and own. Finally, our consumer reviews show a record of poor reliability in a number of areas. We do not recommend the Journey.

Performance & mpg

The base-model Journey SE comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Uplevel SXT and R/T trim levels employ a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. It's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. On these trim levels, buyers have a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In our testing, an all-wheel-drive R/T model went from zero to 60 mph in an unremarkable 9.2 seconds -- just as slow as competing four-cylinder models.

The EPA gives the four-cylinder Journey ratings of 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. The front-drive V6 drops to 16/24/19, and adding AWD yields a 15/23/18 rating. None of the above is very good relative to the competition.

Every 2010 Journey includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, rollover-sensing stability control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags for all three rows. A rearview camera is optional, as are handy built-in second-row child booster seats, a first in this segment. In brake testing, a Journey R/T came to a stop in a longish 132 feet.

In crash tests, the Journey received perfect ratings in all categories. The government awarded it five starts in both front and side impacts, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Journey its highest "Good" rating for both frontal-offset and side impacts.

Despite its plebeian Caliber roots, the 2010 Dodge Journey is a well-fed specimen, with even the base SE model tipping the scales at a hefty 3,800 pounds. The four-cylinder engine is simply overmatched here -- there's not nearly enough power to merge confidently on the highway, and it sounds as strained as it feels. The V6 in the SXT and R/T models is more appropriate, returning decent acceleration and passing power, but it's still well behind the standard-setting V6 in the RAV4.

On the open road, the Journey stays quiet, but its steering is terribly numb and vague. Handling is also poor, even in the ostensibly sporty R/T model. Overall, few crossovers are as unpleasant to drive as this Dodge.

Inside, the 2010 Dodge Journey is a spacious, versatile family hauler. Families with one or two children should find more than enough room in the first two rows, and the optional 50/50-split third-row seat can serve as a sort of emergency backup for kids.The second-row seats slide fore and aft, and access to the third-row seats is a breeze. All-around comfort is reduced somewhat due to the hard and flat seats, however, and the low placement of the audio controls makes them awkward to reach for the driver -- especially with the optional touchscreen-controlled stereo. Materials quality and fit and finish are notably subpar.

In terms of utility, there's obvious influence from Chrysler's minivans, as the Journey's interior is awash in cupholders, lidded storage bins and cubbyholes, including tubs beneath the second-row floor and an ingenious compartment beneath the front passenger seat. Maximum cargo capacity is 68 cubic feet, a bit less than what's available in some competing models.

2010 Dodge Journey models

A midsize crossover SUV, the 2010 Dodge Journey comes in SE, SXT and R/T trim levels. All models come standard with two-row seating for five; with the optional 50/50-split-folding third-row bench (SXT and R/T only), capacity increases to seven.

The base SE comes with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with a six-disc CD/MP3 changer. The midgrade SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, heated side mirrors, a trip computer, enhanced interior storage, stain-resistant cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet and satellite radio. The top-drawer R/T features 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Dodge bundles most of the Journey's optional features into packages, and many of the upper trim levels' features are available as options for the lower trims. Other major options, depending on the trim level, include a Chrome Appearance package, sport-tuned suspension and steering, Bluetooth, an iPod adapter, tri-zone climate control, a rear-seat entertainment system and a hard-drive-based navigation and audio system with a back-up camera.

If you think of the Qashqai +2 as a 7-seater Qashqai, then you'd be forgiven for looking at the Journey as a 7-seater Caliber.

But it's a bit better than that.

Like the Caliber, it's front-drive only, not the 4x4 it appears to be. So it's easier on fuel, yet shrugs off kerbs and speed cushions as effectively as an SUV.

Which quality 7-seat vehicle with prestige would you recommend, inside of the dodge journey (2008 – 2010).

• Boot space is 303–1914 litres

It has a lot of showroom appeal. The LED dash lights up like a small aircraft's and is very clear in all lighting situations. (Our two-hour test drive contrived to give us every kind of climatic condition of a lousy English summer.) The ‘Tilt ‘N Slide' centre seats fold up and slide cleverly forwards in one movement for access to the rearmost. Being sort-of American there are cupholders everywhere.

All three centre-rear seats have ISOFIX tethers, so one kiddy can sit in the middle with a clear view forwards, though they won't take three child seats across. The rear side doors open 90 degrees making installation of child seats less back-breaking than usual. Seats are progressively 40mm and 17mm higher helping rear passengers see forwards. There are bins under the floor with removable wet liners, like small washing up bowls, so they are easy to clean. The upper glovebox is air conditioned and contains removable rubber can holders, so Coca Cola won't rattle in there.

There are separate roof mounted a/c controls for the rear seats. And on SXT and RT versions, the front passenger seat folds flat so long loads can be accommodated alongside the driver and four passengers sitting 1-2-1. Rearmost passengers get slots to push their toes under the seats in front and more room than in a Qashqai, Outlander, C Crosser or 4007. But don't expect adults to thank you for a lift if they have to sit there.

There's a choice of two engines: Chrysler's 168bhp 2.4 litre petrol, or VW's 138bhp Pumpe Duse diesel, with five or six manual gears respectively. Or, on the SXT, you can have a Getrag dual clutch auto, the same as in the Focus and small Volvos, rather than VAG's DSG, giving an interesting new angle on powertrain sharing. CO2 is 209g/km for the petrol, 171g/km for the diesel and 186g/km for the diesel auto, none of which are bad for a 7 seater with the street presence of an SUV.

The diesel engine will move the car's considerable 1,895kg bulk along, but weak low-down torque means a lot of gearchanges to keep it on the boil. It feels like a slightly less refined Mitsubishi Grandis with the same powertrain. It will go round corners without any drama up to a point. Though it's best driven in the same manner as a pick-up or 4x4. Its seat height gives it a distinct advantage pulling out of side roads because you can see over the tops of parked cars.

There's a point in the vehicle. It's a relatively cheap 7 seater with some SUV attributes, a diesel auto option, and not too punishing CO2. A lot of families have taken to the Caliber and if more offspring are expected it's a logical move up. While DIY dads will be very happy with the ability to carry timber, and flatpack wardrobes. Perhaps even a surfboard if they don't drive too far onto the beach.

What to watch out for

A/c condenser failure reported just within 3 year warranty and replaced under warranty. Then Getrag Powertshift twin clutch transmission control unit solenoids began to disengage forward or reverse gears. Need for new Transmission Control Unit diagnosed at a cost of £3,000, minus a £500 contribution from FIAT.

Launched Frankfurt Show September 2007 to supplement Chrysler Voyager in Europe. Dodge Journey "is a seven-seat vehicle that combines the space and practicality of an MPV with the style of an SUV and the ride, handling and fuel efficiency of a family saloon."

4,888mm (16') long x 1,878mm (6' 2") wide.

Journey launched in the UK

Featured a 2.4-litre petrol engine or a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Both powertrains available with either a manual or Getrag Powershift automatic gearbox. 5+2 with flexible seating system, spacious storage bins and underfloor storage areas. Safety enhancements include ESP and three-row side curtain airbags.

Dodge Journey adapts the platform also used on the 2008 Dodge Avenger. Dodge Journey’s 113.8-inch (2,890 mm) wheelbase is 4.9 in. (124 mm) longer than the Avenger to accommodate its 5+2 seating and additional cargo space. The Dodge Journey effectively replaced the SWB Chrysler Voyager model in the Chrysler Group range.

With 5+2 seating standard across the range, the front-wheel drive Dodge Journey was available in the UK from August 2008 and featured a 2.4-litre petrol engine or a 2.0-litre diesel engine. VAG diesel engine available with either a manual or Getrag Powershift two clutch automatic gearbox.

Family-friendly features that include tilt and slide second-row seats; rear doors that open to 90-degrees for easy access when installing child seats and air-conditioning that works in all three rows will all help take Journey owners to a new level of family motoring.

The new Dodge came with a choice of a 2.4-litre petrol engine or a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The diesel engine was available with either a manual or Getrag dual-clutch automatic gearbox and returned up to 43.5 mpg (combined cycle) in the EC tests.

The entry-level SE model came with three-zone climate control; a tilt and telescope steering wheel; tyre pressure monitoring; power-folding and heated wing mirrors; electric windows and six-disc CD with MP3 compatible sound system all as standard.

2010 Model Year Dodge Journey models on sale in the UK. The entry-level 2.4-litre petrol SE now £16,990 and offered Tilt ‘n Slide™ flexible seating system, spacious under-floor storage bins and under-seat storage areas and three-zone climate control. The model also came with 16-inch steel wheels, a tilt and telescopic steering column, tyre pressure monitoring, power-folding and heated door mirrors, electric windows and six-disc CD with MP3 compatible sound system all as standard. The SXT for 2010 was priced from £19,990. In addition to the SE specification it features six way power driver seat, lumbar adjustment, fog lamps and 17 inch alloy wheels. The 2010 Journey SXT also got second-row integrated child booster seats, roof rails and crossbars, sunscreen glass, leather steering wheel and gear shifter and steering wheel audio controls.

The top-of-the range R/T for 2010 cost £21,990 and featured all the SXT equipment plus leather-trimmed seats and 19 inch alloy wheels. New for 2010 includes uconnect® phone with voice recognition, a hands-free communication system using Bluetooth technology, iPod® connectivity, roof crossbars and second-row integrated child booster seats.

The 2010 MY Dodge Journey had improved its CO2 emissions and therefore dropped a tax band. The 2.0-litre diesel manual decreased its emissions by five grams per kilometre, moving from tax band H to G, saving £25 of vehicle excise duty, and the 2.0-litre diesel automatic model decreased by 10 grams per kilometre, saving £40 of vehicle excise duty and moving from Band J to I. The frugal 2.0-litre diesel engine returned up to 44.8 mpg on the EC combined cycle.

What's New for 2020?

Dodge cuts down the number of available trims on the Journey from three to just two for 2020: the SE Value and the Crossroad. The other notable cuts are the absence of all-wheel drive and the optional V-6 engine that were paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The only powertrain available is now the antiquated 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder that is paired to a four-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Buyers can look forward to the addition of standard rear park assist to all models as well as a standard sunroof for the Crossroad trim level. Dodge also streamlines the option-picking process with the introduction of the Popular Equipment Group which bundles many features together, depending on trim level. In the SE Value trim, the package gives you a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Uconnect with Voice Command and Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, three-zone climate control, security alarm, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group adds a universal garage door opener, remote start, heated front seats and steering wheel, navigation, and a six-speaker sound system with a subwoofer. Dodge has announced that the Journey will finally come to an end after the 2020 model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2020 Dodge Journey starts at $25,170 and goes up to $30,090 depending on the trim and options.

With the absence of the V-6 and all-wheel drive for 2020, the rental-fleet-inspired SE Value version is our pick from the Journey lineup. With minimal options to choose from and minimal value added from the Popular Equipment Group at this level, we'd skip everything and stick with the bare-bones Journey.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Journey SE and Crossroad trims come with an underpowered four-cylinder engine that's best avoided—except you can't, since the V-6 is no longer offered. The 172-hp engine is woefully underpowered and the four-speed automatic transmission that's reluctant to downshift further dulls its real-world performance.

There are not many three-row crossovers that are entertaining to drive, so their ride and handling are graded on a curve. Even so, the Journey's ponderous handling and unresponsive transmission leave it far from getting a good rating from us. It wallows in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of this softness, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The four-cylinder engine has the worst EPA ratings among competitors with similar powertrains, with 19 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. By comparison, the 2019 Honda CR-V is rated at 26 city and 32 mpg on the highway, while the 2019 Toyota C-HR is rated at 27/31.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Journey's interior is far from upscale, but its simple controls are user-friendly. Getting anyone to fit in the third row—even children—requires those in the second row to compromise their legroom. Cheap-feeling bits such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels are especially egregious on the priciest version. Several luxury features including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list.

Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn't as large as some competitors. You can fold down the 50/50-split third row and the 60/40-split second row to expand the available cargo space, although the Journey offers the least amount of total cargo space of the vehicles in this class. In addition to the expected compartments in and around the console, there's also a generously sized bin under the front-passenger seat cushion, as well as two large underfloor compartments in the second row.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although every model features an easy-to-use touchscreen, the system has fewer features than many other Dodge products. Likewise, the larger screen is responsive, but we wish Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability were offered here. There's also only a single USB port up front—not great for the device-happy spawn likely to inhabit the back seats.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The Journey's lackluster safety report card reveals that it's not the best choice when it comes to sheltering your precious onboard cargo. Its crash-test results are not great, and—what's worse—it offers none of the advanced driver-assistance technology that is expected in other family haulers. The only available safety feature is rear parking sensors.

Dodge's warranty coverage is average, and Journey buyers won't enjoy complimentary scheduled maintenance.

You can get stuck in a traffic jam if you travel by car, taxi or bus, that won’t happen if you take the train. The Aeroexpress commutes between Belorussky Station in the city and the railway station at the airport, located on the south side of the airport at Terminal E. An automated people mover (APM) runs between this station and terminals A and B. The Aeroexpress departs every 30 minutes, travel time is 35 minutes.

From metro station Belorusskaya at Belorussky Station, you can travel by metro to the city centre and other parts of Moscow. The journey time from metro station Belorusskaya to metro station Teatralnaya close to Red Square is only 5 minutes.

Aeroexpress tickets The prices are listed below, an Aeroexpress ticket including a ride with the metro, tram or (trolley) bus costs 560 RUB, the price for a subway ticket is 55 RUB. You can buy tickets for the Aeroexpress at the stations, but it is cheaper to do this online. Please consult website and timetable Aeroexpress for more information.

SAVING TIPS: Tickets can be bought at the airport, but online it is easier and cheaper (450 RUB one way, 900 RUB return). A group ticket can be used by four people and costs 1,100 RUB for a single journey and 1,800 RUB for a return (valid for 30 days). The price is the same online and from the ticket machine. Aeroexpress trains run without stopping, besides you can use free WiFi aboard since early 2015.

Bus and metro to Moscow

It is more economical to travel by bus and metro to the centre of Moscow. Needless to say, taking a direct train is easier and faster. With bus 817 and bus 948 you can get in 35 minutes to metro station Planernaya (northernmost station metro line 7). With bus 851 and bus 949 it takes 25 minutes to metro station Rechnoy Vokzal (northernmost station metro line 2). The price of a bus ticket is 57 RUB or 80 RUB.

From both stations you can take the metro to the centre of Moscow, station Kuznetskiy Most for metro line 7 (travel time: 31 minutes) and station Teatralnaya for metro line 2 (travel time: 23 minutes). Metro station Kuznetskiy Most is a short distance from the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. The total journey time is at least one hour. If the bus ends up in a traffic jam, the journey can take a lot longer.

Tickets for the subway priced 55 RUB are available from the ticket vending machines. You can also buy a day ticket (yediniy) for public transport in Moscow for 200 RUB, it is valid for 24 hours. During the night you can travel by bus H1 between the airport and the city every half hour.
