The S$1,200 Palace Suite Experience — Dream Cruises Review

Dream Cruises Review – If money could buy happiness, perhaps an extra S$1.2k is what you need.

When I heard we were going to experience the Palace Suite on Dream Cruises, I expected the getaway to be lavish — self-indulgent even.

I mean, for a 3D2N Palace Suite getaway that costs ~S$1.2k (room for two) — it’s double the amount of the cheapest stateroom on the same cruise . Is the upgrade really worth splurging on?

The Palace on World Dream Cruises Review

If you’ve sailed with Dream Cruises, you may have noticed some doors just don’t open — unless, you’re a Palace guest.

It’s truly a premium section on top of the cruise that’s reserved for those living in the Palace rooms — think access to a private lounge, restaurants, spa, pool, sun deck and of course, The Palace accommodations.

Our first taste of indulgence was simply getting to our room, which we could arrive at promptly, thanks to priority check-in and an elevator exclusive to Palace guests.

The Accommodation (Palace Suite)

There are four different room types in The Palace, each offering a different tier of luxury. From the highest, there’s the Palace Villa, Palace Penthouse, Palace Deluxe Suite and Palace Suite.

That’s not to say that our Palace Suite wasn’t grand at all.

Behold the Palace Suite, our accommodation for the next two nights!

With 37sqm of space, the Palace Suite sleeps up to 4 pax with a queen-size bed and double sofa bed — and still has plenty of room to spare. There’s also a private (and sizeable) balcony and swish bathroom that comes with a bathtub!

Compared to the Balcony Deluxe Stateroom at 22sqm with a long rectangle layout.

Other room privileges for Palace guests include a complimentary mini-bar, a Nespresso coffee machine as well as luxury linens. I don’t own luxury linens back home but as a borderline insomniac and ridiculously light sleeper (who gets awoken by her cat), I might just order some because this bed really got me into a deep slumber. Lying in bed felt like snuggling among clouds.

Having made the most of our accommodation, it was time for us to discover what other perks awaited us.

The all-access pass!

Over the next 3D2N, we ditched our titles as common folk and adopted that of royalty.

As Palace guests onboard the World Dream, we had exclusive access to private facilities , high-end specialty restaurants and round-the-clock dedicated butler service — yes, a dedicated butler, I kid you not.

Personal Butler Concierge Service

From planning our daily schedule to booking reservations at restaurants, nothing was considered too trivial for our butler, Timmy.

Of course, the first thing we asked was “how do we connect to the WiFi?” Turns out Palace guests get complimentary WiFi so we didn’t have to purchase a WiFi package.

I remember casually mentioning we were having steak and seafood grill for dinner. To our surprise, Timmy dropped by to say hi and made sure we’d everything we needed.

She also suggested that we catch the theatrical showcase ‘Faith’ — priority access and complimentary bookings as Palace guests meant we got the best view in the house.

*Pro-tip: Ask your butler for their extension number so you can reach them when you’re out and about

Exclusive Facilities For The Palace Guests

Chilling at our private (and quiet) pool

If you enjoy private and quiet spaces, the public pool and sun deck might not be the most ideal place to chill as it’s always bustling with people. But Palace guests have access to an exclusive pool and sun deck, which we made the most of by chilling out at the deck both day and night.

*Pro-tip: For the best views of the sunset, you can either enjoy it from your balcony or by heading up to the Palace sun deck

Complimentary Dining And Beverages

Like every other cruise vacation, you get a free pass to eat whatever you want. The Lido Restaurant is the main buffet place where you get a huge variety of cuisines. The only downside is that it’s almost always crowded.

Palace guests don’t have to head to The Lido. You have exclusive access to The Palace Restaurant — same variety, sans the crowds.

*Pro-tip: Opt for only breakfast here as you get to enjoy complimentary set menu meals for lunch and dinner at specialty restaurants!

Note: The dress code is smart casual in the indoor areas of The Palace.

Did I mention that you can get coffee, tea, and chilled drinks for free all day long? For non-Palace guests, this is the equivalent of their ‘Refresh’ drinks package ($60 top-up for 3D2N cruise).

This complimentary beverage package is only included for Palace guests and it comes with happy hour from 5–7PM. For free-flow alcoholic beverages, simply whisk yourself to The Palace Bar when the clock strikes five and order away!

Fine Dining At Specialty Restaurants

Buffet aside, there are seven specialty restaurants on the cruise — these aren’t complimentary for non-Palace guests.

The Palace package includes a complimentary set lunch and dinner menu for each day at the specialty restaurants. If you do the math, that adds up to ~S$300 worth of gourmet food per person. If you’re the sort that lives to eat, you’re definitely getting more bang for your buck as a Palace guest — along with the non-food perks!

Notable selections include celebrity chef Mark Best’s Seafood Grill and Prime Steakhouse, Hot Pot, and Silk Road Chinese Restaurant.

This, to me, is one of the main selling points of The Palace package. We were always looking forward to the gourmet experiences and not once were we disappointed.

*Pro-tip: To maximise your complimentary dining, try out different specialty restaurants for every lunch and dinner!

Hot pot on a cruise? Yes please

Private Gym

Private Palace gym with treadmills, rowing machine, weights and no crowd!

If you wish to burn off some calories, you can always pop by The Palace Gym for a quick workout. Don’t worry about having to wait your turn because the gym’s all yours!

*Pro-tip: Like all Palace facilities, you can get your butler to book your preferred timeslot — it’s first come first served, so do book early!

Dream Cruises Review Verdict: Is splurging for the Palace Experience Worth it?

Going on a cruise was something that had never crossed my mind, much less spending S$1,200 on a luxury cruise holiday.

Having experienced it, I must say I get the allure now — you get a bigger and fancier room, complete top-notch personalised service, premium dining, drinks privileges and a pool and sun deck that’s essentially yours. There’s simply no restrictions or further top-up required for everything you want to do on the cruise.

It also hit me that what we’re really paying for is a period of happiness — a time on board the cruise that’s free of everyday worries.

I used to not believe that money can buy you happiness. But as I watched the sun rise over the azure waters from our Palace Suite’s ample balcony, that feeling sure came close to it.

The indulgence of comfort and leisure, coupled with exclusivity and privacy definitely made this luxury cruise experience one that’s almost impossible to beat.

What to expect when staying at Dream Cruises’ the Palace

Though we’re all dreaming of getting on that plane, cruises are still a lovely getaway and escape from the humdrum of work and daily life.

And if you’ve got some extra budget from that holiday you didn’t take in 2020, consider splurging on a suite rather than staying in a balcony or interior stateroom.

It doesn't have to cost you an arm or a leg too. Though prices do fluctuate based on demand, you can book Palace suites from just $699(excluding taxes) on World Dream.

Considering that my Royal Caribbean balcony stateroom cost around $800 plus per pax in June (which I eventually cancelled due to the heightened restrictions) , I’d say such a deal is well worth it.

Of course, look out for shoulder periods and try not to book your sailing during the school holidays if possible.

I stayed in a Palace suite on Dream Cruises’ World Dream (as part of a media sailing) when the line restarted sailings last November. It's described as a “ship-within-a-ship” experience, with more exclusivity and VIP entitlements as compared to what other cruisers get. Here’s what you can expect.

Obviously, rooms are going to be bigger and more luxurious than those of the standard variety. I stayed in the lead-in category Palace Suite , and enjoyed a pristine, spacious and very comfortable room.

At 37 sqm, the room featured a queen-size bed with fine bedlinens and a double sofa bed. It sleeps 4 comfortably, and I had the whole room to myself! I also had an extremely blissful sleep, all thanks to the fluffy pillows, Italian luxury linens and comfy duvet.

I also appreciated that there was a draw curtain surrounding my bed, so I could block out light streaming in from outside. The curtains are also meant to separate the sofa area and queen bed, especially if 4 are sleeping in the room.

We all know how squeezy cruise bathrooms can be, so the sizeable bathroom in this suite was very much welcomed. There was both a standing shower and a bathtub, as well as luxury amenities including bath foam, shampoo, body lotion and hair conditioner. I’m also pleased to report that the shampoo and hair conditioner were of good quality and didn’t result in hay-like hair, unlike the 2-in-1 hair and body wash from Royal Caribbean’s standard balcony rooms.

Other details I enjoyed included the spacious wardrobe, minibar where drinks and small snacks like Pringles and Kit Kat were complimentary, and a separate dressing table where I could dry my hair.

I also got to tour the Palace Villa, the equivalent of a presidential suite in most hotels. Grandeur at its finest, it boasts a grand piano, luxurious bedrooms, a massive balcony with a whirlpool, a rooftop/sundeck area, a separate living and dining area and a very opulent bathroom. It definitely costs a bomb, but this is luxury at its finest and you may never want to leave your suite!

If there’s one thing that stands out about the Palace, it’s definitely the amazing concierge service. I had access to a 24-hour dedicated Butler Concierge service , and my butler Clarence was always just a phone call away.

He would help me with booking dinner reservations and theatre shows, and was always very prompt with following up (either by phone or knocking on my stateroom door) to confirm my reservations.

Whilst I sometimes found it faster to just call up guest services myself, I did appreciate my butler’s efficient service. If you’re the lazy type, you’ll definitely appreciate someone arranging everything for you - especially on vacation!

As I had a small tear in my dress, Clarence even managed to find a seamstress on the ship to mend my garment upon request! When I came back to my room at the end of the night, my dress was neatly folded on the sofa and sewn up.

If I had to be nitpicky, I did feel that housekeeping did overlook some details. Finished snacks from the minibar were not taken away, as well as my uneaten complimentary dessert, so they could definitely have been more proactive with that.

VIP perks and exclusive amenities

Being a Palace guest means several VIP perks, including priority check-in at Marina Bay Cruise Terminal.

There was a priority lane for us to check in our luggage earlier, and we could board the ship earlier than other guests. Also, we had complimentary Wi-Fi access throughout our stay, which was speedy and reliable except for one or two disconnections at sea.

As part of the ship-within-a ship concept, we also had a private lift (which was just minutes away from our suite) providing us access to the private pool, spa and gym for suite guests.

Located at the front of the ship, the private pool was arguably my favourite place in the whole ship. It had numerous whirlpools, cabanas and deckchairs to relax on and was practically empty the entire day save for one or two people. It's particularly tranquil at night, where you can soak in a whirlpool and gaze at the stars.

And if you don’t fancy crowds at the ship's main gym or spa, the private ones for suite guests are a more exclusive option. I would say both aren’t as big as the publicly accessible ones, but when I went there wasn’t a single soul around - so you can indulge in the sauna uninterrupted.

Being a suite guest also meant we had front row seats to World Dream’s theatre shows. Seats for Palace guests are marked out and in the centre and front - the perfect angles for enjoying the live performances.

Dining experiences

Another experience that makes the Palace so attractive is the privilege of enjoying World Dream’s specialty dining options .

As a Palace guest, you get to dining in specialty restaurants for free, as well as the exclusive Palace restaurants which only suite guests can visit. Given that food at buffet restaurant The Lido had limited choices , I’d highly recommend making reservations for the specialty restaurants.

Do try to make dining reservations on your first day. Some popular places like Umi Uma Teppanyaki had really limited slots and were all booked out by day 2 of the sailing.

My top pick was Umi Uma Teppanyaki, with delicious offerings like garlic fried rice and a choice of either chicken thigh, salmon fillet or fillet mignon. On the dessert menu were green tea ice cream with matcha cake, as well as banana pancake with coconut ice cream.

The chef also entertained us with his knife-twirling antics, and I savoured the tender beef cubes.

Another favourite was food at Palace restaurant. Service was fast and efficient, and the menu featured a good mix of Western and Asian offerings. We had the option of ordering a three course meal including an appetiser, soup of the day and main course.

My favourite was the flavourful penne rigate, and my dining buddy enjoyed the aromatic char kuay teow. They also had other Asian delights like bak kut teh, chive dumplings and stir fried vegetables.

We also had steak and lobster at Mark Best seafood restaurant. Whilst I had high hopes for the seafood, they were unfortunately underwhelming, with the steak being slightly tough and the lobster nothing to shout about.

We also had a long wait time of more than one hour for our food. The set is pretty expensive (around $88 I think) for non-suite guests, so you can just try this one out and hope for better luck on your visit.

For a traditional Chinses dining experience, head to Silk Road. The food itself was honestly not particularly memorable, but I did love the restaurant’s traditional design, with a stage for live performance (unfortunately not permitted during our sailing because of Covid restrictions).

If you love your alcohol, you’ll also love the fact that booze is complimentary for suite guests. Unfortunately, I didn’t make full use of the beverage package as I got quite bloated ordering a cocktail with each meal. They were very decent though, and perfect for a nightcap.

Do note that like on land, alcohol isn’t served after 10:30pm. You can however, order beverages to your suite and enjoy them from the balcony.

Though most of us can’t afford to book a cruise suite on a regular basis, I’d say Dream Cruises' the Palace is worth trying at least once. The service, luxe rooms, easy access to private facilities and ability to dine at specialty restaurants do make you feel like a VIP.

And if you score a good deal, it’s definitely more value-for-money than a standard balcony on its competitor cruise line during peak season.

Genting Dream’s The Palace

Described as a luxury ship-within-a-ship and a private club for travellers who appreciate the best things in life, The Palace all-suite enclave in Resorts World Cruises' Genting Dream truly delivers on fuss-free holidays

What Taking a cruise holiday is one of the most fuss-free ways of vacationing, as one has the benefit of an entire integrated resort moving along together from one destination to the next. A cruise guest has all the dining and recreation they could ever want conveniently located at his doorstep, and can elevate the experience with various packages.

Cruising as a guest of The Palace, however, takes fuss-free holidays to a whole different level. There is no need to consider what adds-on are necessary because the Palace guest gets them all, from free high-speed Wi-Fi for up to two devices and priority show arrangements, to complimentary dining at any of Genting Dream ’s six specialty restaurants as well as free-flow tea, coffee and juices all day, every day within the luxurious and exclusive cocoon that is The Palace enclave.

In keeping its promise of luxurious hospitality, The Palace speeds guests through check-in at the cruise terminal. A staff will handle the procedure while guests take a short rest in a lounge where coffee and tea are served.

Once on board, a butler is assigned to guests booked into every suite, and mine was Anya. She whisked me and my family off to the Palace Restaurant to make the most of the remaining hour of lunch service, while she brought our bags to our suite.

Later, she joined us to find out what we hoped to do over our two-night cruise, and recommended various restaurants, activities and shows that were suitable for us. As I was travelling with my little boys, Anya marked out a variety of attractions that will charm the young ones and proceeded to book and plan our itinerary on our behalf.

A handwritten programme, which packed in front-row seats at Yin.Yang theatre show (stunning, with a nice surprise at the end), art & craft workshops at the lobby deck (so fun), meals at specialty restaurants we were keen on (all delicious), and family karaoke (in a private room so nobody discovered how tone-deaf we were), was deposited in our room when we got back from lunch.

For our remaining time onboard, Anya was always present to say hello, find out how we were doing, and to escort us to our next programme. Should we need help, Anya was just a phone call away, no matter the time of day.

Facilities The Palace is truly an exclusive space that requires the right key card for access. Occupying the forward section of Genting Dream , The Palace offers a dedicated elevator to bring guests through decks 13 to 18 where all the private facilities and Palace accommodation are.

Palace guests have their own pool, Jacuzzis, sun deck and poolside café on deck 18. This is a wide open space dressed in rattan, white and beige and with lounge and pop music playing overhead. The vibe here is laid back and elegant, and lies in contrast to the boisterous party scene over at the public pool and sun deck.

Also exclusive to Palace guests is the Palace Restaurant on deck 17 where main meals, afternoon tea and supper are served every day of sailing; Genting Club on deck 16; the Palace Spa, gym and fitness studio on deck 18; and complimentary fitness classes led by a professional trainer at Crystal Life Fitness on deck 15.

With limited access, these facilities were often serene and partially occupied throughout our cruise. In fact, we had the pool, gym and fitness studio all to ourselves most of the time.

The only crowd I came across within The Palace confines was in the afternoon at the Palace Restaurant, when it was time for Afternoon Tea – a complimentary F&B treat that is very popular with The Palace regulars, according to Anya.

Room We had the Palace Suite – the lead in room category for The Palace.

The spacious unit comes with a queen bed with quality linen, sofa bed that sleeps two, walk-in wardrobe, pantry with premium coffee-making facilities and a minibar stocked with complimentary drinks and snacks the first round, roomy bathroom with his-and-her basins, bath and shower, and balcony with a pair of sun loungers.

The young ones were particularly impressed with the selection of animated movies on TV.

Verdict As the default trip planner of the family, I was unused to leaving someone else to organise our programme on board. However, The Palace’s 24-hour butler service was a luxurious entitlement I could get used to. I loved having the Wi-Fi, specialty dining and beverage add-ons as a default, which saved me from having to purchase them piece-meal. I loved even more the serenity and privacy offered by The Palace’s exclusive facilities. I would gladly return to The Palace for a rejuvenating me-time getaway.

Cruise Tips

What to wear?

If you choose to dine in for western cuisine in the formal restaurant, please do not wear informal attire. For male guests, at least wear long pants or jeans, no shorts, sleeveless shirts, travel shoes or sandals will be allowed; for female guests, no shorts, sandals and camisoles is allowed.

Normally, a welcome cocktail party and other special parties that are specially designed for interested customers will be held. All guests are required to wear formal attire for these events.

Except for the above mentioned occasions, you can wear casually onboard at any time!

What to do?

Daily notifications will be put up at every corner on the cruise. Moreover, the cruise crew will put a detailed daily itinerary inside each guest room. Except for the standard and fix activities, there are other special activities as well and they differ from day to day. What a pity to miss out on any of them! So please remember to check the agenda every day!

Take for instance, Royal Caribbean offer high standard performances such as magic shows and concerts delivered by famous artists from all over the world every day. If your children prefer playing than to watch performances, you can always let them go to the children room. These rooms are divided into different age groups and your children will definitely have a great time playing there!

How to pay?

As you check in, you can link your credit card to your room card. For every purchase you make onboard, you only need to show your room card. Payments will be automatically deducted from your credit card as your journey ends. There is no need to bring cash onboard.

Tips: The staff provide excellent service but they will not accept tips under any circumstances. However, their performance will be assessed based on the feedback from the customer survey forms that you will fill up when you leave. You can show your appreciation by giving them positive feedbacks!

What does my payment for the trip include?

Accommodation, 3-5 meals daily and some inclusive entertainment are included. Majority of the public facilities are free.

What can I bring onboard?

There is no need for you to bring any food or water because food and drinks will be provided for free onboard. You can pack food from restaurants or those stalls with 24-hour food and water supply and consume in your own room. There is also 24-hour hot drinking water supply onboard if for the need of the elderly customers. Please remember not to bring any liquor with you to the cruise!
