Nouvelle Vague 20th Anniversary Tour:

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave. This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and the late Olivier Libaux’s unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk canon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Mélanie Pain, Phoebe Killdeer, Elodie Frege, Nadeah and Liset Alea.

The group’s first two albums, Nouvelle Vague (2004) and Bande A Part (2006) defined their unique sound with Bossa versions of New Wave Classics. Their third album NV3 (2009) featured collaborations with Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore, Ian McCulloch from Echo and the Bunnymen, Terry Hall from The Specials and Barry Adamson. Further acclaimed albums were released in 2010, 2016 and 2019 and the band have performed to rapturous audiences worldwide throughout their 19 year career.

Their 2024 worldwide tour celebrates 20 years since the release of their seminal first album alongside the launch of their next classic LP, timed specifically to coincide with their UK Tour.

Celebrating 20 years since the release of their seminal, self-titled debut album, Nouvelle Vague are performing at Band on the Wall with Kill The Pain, an intriguing duo featuring Nouvelle Vague’s own Mélanie Pain.

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave. This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and the late Olivier Libaux’s unique project, Nouvelle Vague. The French musicians and producers set out with the intention of doing something that hadn’t been tried before: running punk, post punk and new wave classics through a bossa nova filter. To further distance the songs from their original versions, they’d recruit female vocalists who were unfamiliar with the 80s classics.

Nouvelle Vague’s debut album, featuring covers of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, XTC’s ‘Making Plans For Nigel’ and Tuxedomoon’s ‘In a Manner of Speaking’, was initially conceived as a one-off. Little did Collin and Libaux know it would soar to global acclaim, the band’s unique fusion of melancholic post punk and bossa nova, coupled with their daring French reinterpretation approach, immediately setting them apart.

Naturally, two more albums followed fairly swiftly, revealing many new and brilliant vocal talents, among them Mélanie Pain, Camille, Phoebe Killdeer, Elodie Frege, Nadeah and Liset Alea. 3 also featured collaborations with Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore, Ian McCulloch from Echo and the Bunnymen, Terry Hall from The Specials and Barry Adamson. Further acclaimed albums were released in 2010, 2016 and 2019, the band performing them to rapturous audiences worldwide.

Nouvelle Vague’s 2024 worldwide tour celebrates 20 years since the release of their seminal first album alongside the launch of their next classic LP, timed specifically to coincide with the UK leg of the tour.

One member of the band will find herself particularly busy on this tour. Mélanie Pain, the unmistakable voice behind many of Nouvelle Vague’s covers, has launched a new project with Phoebe Killdeer, the Australian singer and songwriter of the international number 1 hit ‘Fade Out Lines’. Aptly titled Kill The Pain, the duo’s music flits between nostalgic hedonism and something more futuristic, splicing angular post punk with elastic synth pop, off-kilter funk and far-flung genres.

Kill The Pain’s self-titled debut album, which dropped in 2023, whirled through a kaleidoscope of sounds and styles – a joyful helter-skelter of Latin percussion, funky bass, fraught electric guitars, uninhibited vocals, Afrobeat drums, and 80’s indebted keyboards. Featuring the singles ‘I Do What I Do’ and ‘Zig Zag’ among its many highlights, Kill The Pain scrawled the duo’s name onto that long list of outlandish women prepared to push pop culture to its limits.

It’s a great two-for-one at Band on the Wall, and the perfect balm for those winter blues.

French duo Nouvelle Vague will embark on its first U.S. headlining tour starting this weekend in New York. The group is the brainchild of French producers Marc Collins and Olivier Labaux, who present well-known new wave and punk songs (“Love Will Tear Us Apart,” “Making Plans for Nigel”) to female vocalists who have never heard the originals and then record remakes in a bossa nova pop style. “Our live sound is very minimal, very simple” Collins tells Billboard.com. “We bring our girls over, and some guitars, and I’m there to put some keyboards and ambient sounds here and there. But we really want people to listen to the lyrics and the vocals — there’s no big arrangement or anything.” For the upcoming tour, the group is visiting mostly rock clubs, which Collins says is Nouvelle Vague’s preference. “We started out playing clubs in France, Germany and the U.K. — mostly jazz clubs, but we’ve played big festivals too,” he says. “And we’ve played some dance clubs too, but that’s weird, because it’s not a project to dance to. It is just to listen to.” Meanwhile, the follow-up to Nouvelle Vague’s 2005 self-titled Luaka Bop debut, which peaked at No. 9 on Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums chart, has already been completed. “At the beginning it was impossible to only do the album — we had to fill 40 minutes, so we added some Devo and Buzzcocks [covers],” Collins says of the set, which evolved out of the live show. “And now we have to fill an hour to an hour-and-a-half, so we were forced to get new songs together.” “We think that we touched something with Nouvelle Vague, especially with a younger, female audience, who might not have ever heard the original pieces,” he continues. “We decided to do something different this time — we stuck with the same period, because there were a lot of fabulous songs we forgot the first time. In the wake of the first album, we’ve added several new singers, [so] it has more of a Caribbean and reggae sound to it. I also think this is better produced.” At this point, the new album is untitled. After the U.S. tour, Nouvelle Vague plans to rest and wait for its release. Nouvelle Vague | World Tour

In the wake of the French Touch explosion, the Parisian collective led by Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux released their first album in 2004. The concept followed a formula that was as simple as it was suprtising: New Wave x Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague . Punk and new wave songs were treated as though they were standards an reinterpreted in a languid style of bossa nova from the 50s and 60s., with luxurious arrangements and captivating vocals. Nouvelle Vague rapidly became a global phenomenon, with their cast of guest singers including Camille and Mélanie Pain. “These are not just covers-by-numbers, but intelligent and sensuous (versions)” was how they were described by Franco-German TV station Arte, while they produced a mixed response from New Wave purists.
