Tobias Forge – Ghost ‘A Debut Headline Tour For Spooky Season’
Posted on April 24, 2023 by walladmin
It’s time Aussie fans get the Ghost live set we deserve. We’ve been worthy fans ripping through their back catalogue and spinning fresh covers ‘ Jesus He Knows Me ‘ off forthcoming EP Phantomime and of course marvellous 2022 record Impera . After gawping at the masked ghouls at events like Download Festival 2019 , Aussie fans are ready for the real deal.
Well, in case you missed it last night, it’s happening very soon. The Swedes will be flying down via Destroy All Lines for an east coast three-date headline run in October, starting in Sydney, moving to Melbourne and then winding up in Brisbane. Notably, the metallers are playing some significant venues which you can suss out below, along with early bird dates, links and the usual one-stop-shop for your tickets.
To celebrate the tour announcement, our good friend and publicity queen Tiana Speter sat down with vocalist Tobias Forge to find out what we can expect.
Tobias, I cannot tell you how excited Australia collectively is that Ghost are not only coming back here in 2023 – but it’ll also mark the first full headline tour we get to witness too. On top of that there’s a new EP coming out imminently next month as well. But let’s talk shows to begin with, Ghost have become a band that people say are a “must see” before you die, and there’s a lot of shows on the cards in 2023 for the band before you get here. As a band who are constantly raising the bar in a live setting, have you been planning anything new or crazy for your 2023 shows?
The shorter answer is yes, technically we have. But it’s also a continuation of the Impera tour, so it’s reminiscent of that, it’s a continuation. Without being too technical and boring people with practical things, there are a few things that we have changed around in order for us to be slightly more mobile. And that is also one of the reasons why we were finally able to come back to Australia and not do a festival.
That’s nothing against Download or, back in the day, Soundwave, and all that stuff. But we’ve done that, and I’ve always felt that it was irritating not to be able to do a full show. There’s no bad will there amongst anyone, it’s very practical and economical, and obviously the different crises and the distance have been issues too. But now – finally!
And our touring just continues, we go from the last show of the American tour over to Mexico, we do a Mexican show, then we go down to South America and then just head over the pond (laughs).
Just casually sneak in a trip to the other side of the world on top of that, I love it! And interestingly you brought up Download there, the last time I saw Ghost play was at Download in 2019 which seems like a lifetime ago – but so much has gone on in the world since then, and in the world of Ghost as well. In and amongst all of that there’s been the new album Impera , and the new EP Phantomime is on its way. But with regards to the making of Impera, given this Aussie tour will continue that album’s cycle – it’s album #5, nobody’s first rodeo by any means, but was there any trepidation in the lead up to making this album? Do you ever get that external expectation factor playing into things, or are you just able to bottle the magic and organically evolve?
I think it would be unnatural to not have those moments of doubt, or moments of standing at the crossroads pondering over whether to go this or that direction, especially when you have momentum going. As long as I’ve been making Ghost records, with the odd exception of the first one that was sort of written in a vacuum, as most debut albums are, they’re usually the purest because there’s very little outside influence…as soon as you’re releasing an album and then if you happen to gather a following – every album after that will most naturally have some sort of impact or be impacted by whatever’s going on around the band. And ever since I wrote the second record, I’ve been very adamant about not repeating what we just did – and not repeating myself. But also, of course, not trying to wash away any of those components that might be more DNA-based. But it’s like if I were a chef and I started different restaurants. You don’t wanna do a franchise. Of course, you could do a franchise, you could have a Tobias’s on every corner, equivalent to Tony’s (laughs). But usually the most renowned chefs, they have one sushi place and then they have one pasta place and one fusion place and all that. But they still have that through line, and that’s how I regard my records. It’s supposed to feel that it’s the same blood in there; but they are also supposed to be different, it’s supposed to be ever-changing.
I think I’ve managed to do that, but there are always moments where, you know, making a record is a timely process. And if I’m just speaking from this perspective right now and at this exact point in time – we’re about to embark on this tour. We’re gonna start on May 3rd, I think that’s when all the band members and everybody in the band and crew are coming here to Stockholm. We’re gonna rehearse and then we go out on tour until October pretty much. So, for some of the writing that I’ve been doing up until now, and it has been going on a little bit – but I’m shutting that down for a bit for a while. Then when I come back to the studio in October – then it’s full on, I’m gonna work full time until the next record is done at the beginning of next year.
Spontaneously, intuitively, I already know a lot of the things about the record already. I know what it’s gonna be called, I know the thematics of it, I know what the sleeve is gonna look like and all of the things I want to do. Sometimes, the idea may be intuitive, the idea might be solid. But between now and handing over the record to the record label next year, you go through so many moments of: “oh shit, this sucks!”. And: “this is the best record ever!”. It just goes up and down like that. And I think the trick is to just sort of know the signals and sometimes just go back and rely on what you felt about a song three months ago. It’s great, it’s just that you’ve developed hearing aids (laughs) so you don’t hear it completely anymore, you know?
Photo Gallery by Mick Goddard . Insta: @mickg_photography
That’s an incredible insight into your creative process, especially coming from someone who has been part of this journey for a very decent amount of time now and already has such a strong legacy in their wake. And outside of touring and writing new music, as I mentioned earlier, there is, of course, a new EP PHANTOMIME out in May, a five-track collection of epic covers. It’s not your first entry into the covers arena, but is there any inkling about whether we may hear some of these new tracks from the EP live in action in October? Or are you guys sticking to the set list that’s been stamped out so far on the Impera tour?
Most likely, yes. I don’t think we’re gonna play more than one or maybe two of them, because we still wanna focus on Impera, you know, Pantomime is an extension of that album first and foremost. And especially now that we’re heading into territories that we haven’t been to in many records (laughs), many albums ago! The focus is gonna be to update everyone on the core of the new self-made material. But, Jesus Knows Me , the latest single, that feels like an immediate hit which I believe is gonna go down very well on stage. And I think we’re gonna play it really well – so why not play that!
I don’t doubt it for a second. And I think if the music video is anything to go by, we’re in for a very memorable time. And before I let you go today, in honour of the ecstatic news that Ghost are returning to Australia this year – what are some of your own fondest memories from your previous visits to Australia, this is definitely not your first down under rodeo in 2023!
Oh, several! Ever since we were there the first time, which was for Soundwave, and we also did Big Day Out as well. I think you’ve heard this many times before, but the one thing that was synonymous with Soundwave was the fact that you came down and did five shows across the country. The tours included Adelaide and Perth, but somehow somewhere down the line, I don’t know if something changed, but I’ve understood that you don’t do those long treks anymore. Or to the extent that it was. But back then, since the shows were only on weekends, Perth was one weekend and then you did Adelaide and Melbourne one weekend, then Sydney and Brisbane or the Gold Coast…you were there essentially for over two weeks with a whole heck of a lot of days off. And you had time to do a lot of these things that you don’t normally do on tour, you know, full on touristy things. You can go to the beach, you can go anywhere, essentially like a normal vacation.
I think if you ask any band who was active in the last 20 years that was part of Soundwave or Big Day Out, they would say the same thing. It was amazing! All of the bands were staying at the same big hotel and were very taken care of. And all over town, all these bands that were in town did these sideshows. Because we were all in bands, most of us just went back and forth between Frankie’s Pizza or Cherry Bar and went to all these shows, seeing all these bands playing small clubs or theatres, and some bands played bigger places as well.
I have a lot of good memories there, and I got to know a few people there who are nowadays very close friends of mine, in Sydney in particular. And that now is very much part of my personal trip, coming down to Australia means hanging out with them.
I only have fond memories from the shows we’ve done there, I believe I’m correct in saying that we’ve done one headline show in Sydney…or was it Melbourne?! I don’t remember this because that’s almost 10 years ago, so I don’t remember exactly what we did. We did one sideshow I remember, maybe it was part of the Big Day Out. And we did a sideshow last time in Brisbane which was phenomenal . And not a small club either, it was a huge venue.
There’s a lot of good memories from both aspects on and off the stage, but what makes up for really great touring down there is obviously the weather and the people, the people’s attitudes are just remarkable. Everybody’s so nice, everybody’s so positive. I don’t know what it is, there’s just something very joyous over there. But it fucking breaks my heart hearing that Frankie’s Pizza is not there anymore.
I was gonna say, we lost an institution there, I’m still grieving that loss. What can we get you to do down here in October to make up for it, is there anything still on the bucket list?
I always go to Utopia. That’s my go-to store. But with Frankie’s gone, I don’t know, is there anything else that would be the equivalent now? What is the new place instead of going there? Where do you go?
See, I just moved back to the Gold Coast from Sydney so that is a very good question because I’ve been asking myself the same thing. There’s a heap of fun record shops that have bars attached, and there’s a little prohibition bar close to where Frankie’s was that has hot jazz and waiters dressed up in flapper dressers and suspenders…it’s cute, but it’s just not the same kind of dive bar experience. There’s a very big gap in the market it seems, maybe we need a Ghost bar?!
Don’t tempt me! It’s unbelievable, I mean obviously we’re talking about someone else’s shop here right now. Isn’t it owned by some investment group that does several bars? I mean, if their lease was up or anything like that, they should just move all that stuff to a new location. Then, hear me out people who own that, I don’t remember the name of the group…but I know they have several other different restaurants, fucking open Frankie’s again somewhere else!

GHOST Announce First Australian Headline Tour
24 April 2023 The Rockpit
One of the world’s most exhilarating and esteemed creative forces, Grammy-winning Swedish theatrical rock band GHOST are delighted to announce their first Australian headline tour this October.
Kicking off in Sydney on Tuesday, October 3 at the Hordern Pavilion, the tour will then head down to Melbourne on Wednesday, October 4 at Margaret Court Arena before making its way to Brisbane on Saturday, October 7 at the Riverstage.
In command of well over a billion streams and masters of infectious musical delights, GHOST are a band truly deserving of the word “spectacle”; from their hulking yet glamorous and expertly-crafted sonic output to their otherworldly live performances, GHOST continue to grow their ravenously adoring fanbase, relentlessly luring fans in and beyond the heavier realms with each new release and performance.
Brandishing theatricality with a spellbinding twist on a diverse array of genres, the GHOST mystique and staggering prowess equally flows onstage as well as across five full length albums and multiple EPs, including a brand new covers EP PHANTOMIME due out this May. Armed with five tracks that cover classics and deep cuts by Television, Genesis, The Stranglers, Iron Maiden and Tina Turner, PHANTOMIME will also ultimately bridge the glistening foundations of the group’s internationally chart-smashing 2022 album Impera , which debuted at #1 in a sweep of the US album charts.
Helmed over the years by Tobias Forge and an ever-shifting identity as various incarnations of the demonic Papa Emeritus, and briefly as Cardinal Copia, GHOST’s fluctuations also burrow deeply into an ambitious and innovative DNA. Spanning everything from heavy metal to hard rock, doom metal, psychedelic rock, pop and more, GHOST have enamoured and challenged the status quo throughout their career while also sweeping critical acclaim, from their current status generating over 9 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone to snagging the award for Breakthrough Band at 2012’s Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and taking out the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2016 via their single Cirice .
Boasting the macabre sensuality by Forge and accompanied by an army of instrumentalists known as Nameless Ghouls, GHOST’s notorious performances gleefully break free of any preconceived notions of a typical live metal show, with confetti cannons, disco lights, a razor-sharp aesthetic and everything in between taking centre stage over the years on both festival runs and gargantuan arena tours. 2023 marks the first headline appearance for Swedish sorcerers – and if you thought you’d seen it all before, prepare yourself for a wild ride like no other this October.
Are you on the square? Are you on the level? Don’t delay, tickets will not last long for what is set to be one of the most anticipated tours of 2023

Ghost Upgrade All Venues On Upcoming Australian Tour

Ghost (Source: Supplied)
Swedish metal icons Ghost have built up immeasurable hype for their upcoming Australian tour, upgrading all shows to arena venues.
The Sydney show has been upgraded to Qudos Bank Arena on Tuesday, 3 October, while the Melbourne concert will now be at John Cain Arena on Wednesday, 4 October, and the Brisbane gig will be held at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday, 7 October. Existing ticketholders hold valid tickets to the upgraded concerts.
In addition to the venue upgrade news, the band has revealed that they are bringing their total international production to Australia, promising an utterly authentic Ghost experience for their devoted fans.
Fans can purchase pre-sale tickets on Wednesday, 5 July, at 10 am AEST – sign up here for pre-sale access. The general sale commences on Thursday, 6 July, at 10 am AEST via Destroy All Lines .
The band’s cover of Genesis ’s 1992 track, Jesus He Knows Me , was the first single from their Phantomime covers EP, released last month. The subject matter of that track – a satirical look at televangelism – inspired much of Kill Your Stereo ’s recent chat with vocalist Tobias Forge .
“It’s frighteningly horrible. It's easy not to laugh about the accuracy in which Phil Collins wrote a lyric that ten years ago felt almost dated, even outdated, which now feels so contemporary and important,” Forge said about the band’s motivation in covering Jesus He Knows Me .

The last time that Ghost were in Australia was for the short-lived Download Festival in 2019 . They didn’t headline, but the curiosity of Ghost certainly drew crowds to their tent while headliners Slayer were performing. This October, the Swedes will return to Australia for their first-ever headline run in the country.
The headline tour will be very different to what fans remember from Ghost’s Download appearances, “The biggest difference between this time and the previous times that we've been there is that we're bringing a full production,” Forge said.
“Last time, we played a festival – I don't remember the exact length of the show, but we probably shaved off a lot of material that we would have been able to play,” he told Kill Your Stereo .
“I don't want to, in hindsight, posthumously kill any memories of what people have seen when we have been there before, but we haven't really done a proper show in Australia. That's the thing; we've never really done that. I think that what you're finally getting is a real Ghost show.” You can read our full interview here .

Ghost's penultimate show of their US tour featured a live debut for one song, and a special, very different version of another
Ghost busted out a couple of surprises at one of two special shows in LA
Ghost are currently in the midst of wrapping up their epic Impera US tour, with the first of two, tour-ending dates in Los Angeles taking place last night at the Kia Forum. With no phones, mobile devices or recording equipment permitted at the show, much of what went down remains enshrined in mystery - but it does look like at least one big surprise took place.
According to ever-reliable setlist bible setlist.fm and numerous reactions on social media from excited fans who were at the show, Ghost played quirky Impera cut Twenties live for the very first time (accompanied by, according to setlist.fm, 'eight skeleton dancers', which would be a new touch for Ghost's live show).
On top of that, Ghost also dusted off one of their beloved covers for the first time on this particular tour - If You Have Ghosts , originally released by 13th Floor Elevators frontman and psychedelic rock pioneer Roky Erikson and reimagined by the Swedish spooks for their 2013 EP, If You Have Ghost . It seems like Ghost played a rather special version of the track, too, featuring two cellists and a lovely dash of piano, performed on a separate stage from the rest of the set.
Of course, with no footage or images available from the show itself, we can't be sure exactly what this all looked like or how it played out, but one thing seems for sure: if we are, as has been rumoured, heading into the final stretch of the Impera era, Ghost remain unafraid to inject some new touches into their ever-brilliant live schtick.
See the full setlist for night one of Ghost at the LA Forum below. Ghost follow up their US tour with a handful of dates in South America this month, before heading to Australia for three dates in October.

Ghost are, regardless of whether you're particularly into corpse painted, Satanic-inspired heavy metal, one band that you should not miss live. Their concerts are not simply events to watch but experiential, jaw-dropping journeys to embark upon, and here's why: The Swedish sextet, clad in black hooded gowns and pointed beard-masks (yes, this is a thing) are led by their singer, known as Papa Emeritus, who dons full skull make-up and the robes and hat of a Roman Catholic pope (aside from the upside-down crosses adorning them). As well as their appearances, the band add to the intoxicating atmosphere of their shows with a backdrop of faux stained glass windows, and burn incense to give the audience the impression of being in a church, about to undergo something more than simply watching a group of men play musical instruments on a stage. They achieve this by including the audience in their twisted act, for example during the song Body and Blood, scantily-clad women appeared at the front of the stage offering the 'Eucharist' of a goblet of blood (aka wine) to the lucky fans in the front row.
I saw Ghost at the Fillmore Silver Spring, shorty after the release of their highly anticipated second album, Infestissumam, and was, frankly, blown away by the quality of their live show. Their appearances and Satan-worshipping act are contrasted by the liveliness of their music, which while categorized as heavy or black metal, is definitely more riff and vocal-driven than most metal, with songs such as the single Monstrance Clock and even an amped-up cover of the Beatles' Here Comes The Sun as part of their catchy, dancable set.
Even if you are the biggest metal-phobe around, you should go see Ghost. If heavy metal is your jam, but you're really not into the whole make-up/ crazy outfit thing, you should go see Ghost. If you're a fan or the music but are undecided on paying for a ticket, you should most definitely go see Ghost. The entire experience is something intoxicatingly unforgettable, and you will not regret it!

The wife and I got into the game a bit late but Ghost is as much a part of our yearly plans as is eating, sleeping, and hydrating. We were fortunate to have caught their last two rituals in Sweden last year and were able to capture video of Papa III being pulled off stage during Monstrance Clock. We were so happy that we made the trip from the states because seeing the end of Papa III in videos is nothing compared to the excitement of seeing it in person, from the barrier, and right up front. This band is very exciting to watch and being able to share the experience with my wife has made our evenings with Ghost that much better. My wife met Papa III last year and we've had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Copia 3 times this year during the meet and greets in New York and Pittsburgh. We're looking forward to meeting him again 4 more times out of the 6 rituals we'll be attending in December. We also already have our tickets and vacation planned for the 2 upcoming rituals taking place in Sweden in February 2019. When they make their way back to the states in 2019, we will begin planning our schedules around their tour dates. Here's a short back story as to why they are so important to me. My wife and I were just a couple of months away from signing the official court documents stating we were divorced. While trying to keep things amicable we would meet to discuss things and we'd often listen to Ghost. By the time they would be coming Philadelphia that year, we would have been attending as two single individuals and no longer married. We'd have fun listening to them and as that common ground grew stronger, so did we and slowly began reconciling. By the time they did come to Philadelphia that year, we attended as a happily married couple and continue to do so today. Getting my wife back, I can honestly say, is all thanks to Ghost and I couldn't be more grateful to them or happier sharing the experience with anyone else except for Kelly.
The concert at Liseberg amusement Park was amazing. They opened doors at 11:00 am and there was already like 30 people waiting for the concert impatiently. Security guards and workers of the Amusement Park were very nice and help people when there was an incident outside the park.
The concert started at 8:00 pm without any problem, the crowd went crazy when they went on stage. The setlist was the following:
- Square Hammer
- From the Pinnacle to the Pit
- Elizabeth
- Con clavi con Dio
- Per aspera ad Inferi
- Body and Blood
- Devil Church
- Year Zero
- Spokosonat
- Absolution
- Deus in Absentia
- Monstrance Clock.
At the end of the last show was when 2 bodyguards came on stage and dragged Papa Emeritus III from stage and Papa Emeritus Zero came in, anouncing that the party was over and a new era was about to start.
I only got into Ghost recently and caught their show last night in Toronto.
I decided to get some cheap tickets because I liked the music and thought they'd be fun to see live.
They by far exceeded anything I was expecting. The creepy church vibe, use of incense(which I have never encountered before, very nice touch!), Papa engaging the audience at every opportunity and even took a few minutes just to chit chat and kept us roaring and laughing for more. The use of costumes and masks was amazing.
Being an introvert I don't really go out much, and when I do I just kind of sit there and enjoy the music and the show. This is the first band that's made me get up from my chair and actually get into the show. Next time they come to the area, I'm definitely saving up and treating myself to WAY better seating!
Oh my Ghost, this is the live ritual gig experience your soul is crying out for. Full disclaimer: I love Ghost to bits and have been preaching my dark passion for years. Seeing them live again - this time in a bigger arena off the back of a couple more hit albums - reaffirms the faith.
Go and see Ghost and you will get a diverse setlist drawn from the band's spectacular back catalogue. You will get theatrics and pyrotechnics. You will get both humour and deep emotion, dark anthems and sublime instrumentals and an uplifting sense that you a witnessing something novel and special.
Ghost are - musically, aesthetically, spiritually - something to cherish and the live experience is one that is fun, compelling, cathartic and oh-so-damn-rock-n-roll. Go worship and have the time of your (after)life.
I can see Ghost every night and never get bored. It's not just the band and music, Tobias has created characters, including his own, for this band that are incredibly humble and patient with their fans. While the material can be considered risque, you will see children younger than 10 years old attending that are not only having the time of their lives, but participating in the meet and greets with their parents. Everything about these shows from the music, to the costumes, the characters, and the theatrics is so very much entertaining. We know as fans that there is so much more to look forward to with the future of Ghost and we'll have the opportunity to enjoy them for many more years. It is very exciting when tomorrow becomes today and you're standing in front eagerly awaiting Ashes to start.
If you have Ghost, you have everything.
Theatre; spectacle; a sense of cult worship; dark humour; thick fugs of incense; electric, otherwordly energy; lighting and atmospherics; collective frenzy; and most of all, the sweet music of the night.
Ghost are beautiful for so many reasons. Beneath their sublime subversive style - iconoclastic and gleefully irreverent - is a musical powerhouse making the most compelling and catchy rock in this epoch. The craftsmanship is incredible. The mystique is immense. It's a joy to behold in the flesh (and blood) and if you have the opportunity to absorb the spirit of Ghost in person, surrender to it.
Honestly, Ghost was one of the greatest entertainment experiences I've had. Join them in their ritual and hail your Master...
This was the best show I have ever been to (I have seen a lot too). Ghost put on an electric performance with great theatrics as well as fun conversational bits while the musicians took a couple minutes to get water, wipe the sweat off from under those masks, etc. We were also delighted by the pyrotechnics, fog machines, and surprise mummy dust confetti! Well executed and the band sounded amazing live. I wish I had gotten tickets for the following night too! I will definitely be seeing them when they come back into town. Ghost really knows how to stimulate all their fans' senses. Many thanks to the band for their commitment to their fans and the melodic tunes they share with us. Keep them coming please!!!
The Ghost show was truly amazing. For me, this was mainly due to two things:
1. Each and every member of this band knows his instrument very well, and they play their songs flawlessly and with ease. Leaving them energy to interact with the crowd while still not missing a note/beat.
2. Their concept is so well thought through. From the incense and small unveiling ritual before their set starts to the sisters of sin and perfected visual in set, movements and costumes, everything works brilliantly. And with Papa giving some background info to songs and rituals, you really get the feeling you are part of a well-oiled ritual.
I am very glad I've been to the show, and can't wait to see this band again :)
Awesome band! I had a older friend come with last night to the Stockholm show and even thou she said "It's not exactly my favourite but it was a terrific show, tunes to sing along to and this isn't the last time we do this!" with a huge smile on her face. This was my second Ritual, i love the costume changes, you really feel like your seeing a theatrical show instead of a regular concert, I'm use to sitting up front but this time sat in the balcony to see a spectacular light show and pyrotechnics, we sat in the upper balcony and could feel the heat from the pyro effects.I only wish i could have been yp front closer to Cardinal Copia,to get his blessings. Will not be the last time i go to see Ghost!
