Jewish people in Europe would hold this charming fishing village in the northernmost point of Zealand in a very memorable place in their history. During World War II, Gilleleje was one of the towns where Danish Jews were saved from the Holocaust and transported to Sweden. The Jews were hidden in the holds of the wooden fishing vessels owned by some of the fishermen in Gilleleje who risked their lives and their families’ as well. The well-known philosopher and writer Soren Kierkegaard also favored the town as a vacation spot – he was among Gilleleje’s first visitors in the early 19th century.

He has written about the town in some of his works and in return the town has honored him with a memorial stone which can be found along the 2.5 kilometer Gilbjerg Path. Today the tranquil and picturesque town offers visitors an idyllic holiday with its Blue Flag-rated beaches and other natural attractions. The coastline stretches from Gilbjerg to Kullen and the Gilleleje harbor is lined with small restaurants and kiosks. During the summertime, the small coastal town gets really busy and with only one hotel, reservations are booked months in advance. Aside from bathing in the beach, walking and biking, visitors can look forward to the fish auctions and there’s also local market which opens every weekend.

East of town is the 17th century Nakkehoved Ostre Fyr, the world’s first coal-fired lighthouse. It is open only during June to September and visitors can walk up to admire the picturesque views across Oresund and Kattegat. Finally there is the Gilleleje Museum which houses collections of artifacts from the Middle Ages along with 19th century fishermen tools and houses.

Things to See in Gilleleje

When you tire of the beaches, take a stroll through the old town, with its narrow streets and well-preserved old houses, no two alike. In the center of town stands the Sladrebænken, or "gossip bench," where you can rest and spread some rumors.

From the harbor, you can take the signposted Gilbjergstien path, offering panoramic views over the sea. This will take you to the Søren Kierkegaard Stone, a monument to Denmark's most renowned philosopher. As long ago as 1835, he was one of the first visitors to appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of this place. If you want to get existential while standing here, you can repeat his words: "I often stood here and reflected over my past life. The force of the sea and the struggle of the elements made me realize how unimportant I was."

But most summer visitors come here for the beaches. Gilleleje has an unbroken coastline on either side, stretching from Gilbjerg to Kullen, running from Kattegat in the north to Øresund in the southeast. The city has lifeguards posted in several places along the coast. Many of the bathing beaches have modern toilets, little kiosks, and, often, good restaurants. Several beaches also have ramps leading down to the water for the benefit of wheelchair users.

Within a green space adjacent to the sea, an area that forms part of the landscaping around the recommended Gilleleje Museum and the town's public library, stands a bronze statue called Teka Bashofar Gadol, a Hebrew phrase meaning "Let the mighty shofar proclaim." The statue was donated by a wealthy Israeli patron of the arts, Yul Ofer, and was unveiled in the spring of 1997 to commemorate the flight of Danish Jews from the Nazis in 1943. Gilleleje was the point of departure for some 2,000 Jews who fled to Sweden from the town and other places along the North Coast. Risking their own lives, people in the town and country harbored Jews until they could secure passage on a ship to Sweden.

From a 19th-century fishermen's house to artifacts of the Middle Ages, curators have thrown relics of their past into a somewhat disorganized cultural stew at the Gilleleje Museum, Vesterbrogade 56 (tel. 48-30-16-31 ). The museum traces the development of the area from the early Middle Ages, although some exhibits go back before recorded history. Panoramas present both shorebirds and migratory birds. The museum, along with Gilleleje's library, is housed in the Pyramiden, the Pyramid cultural center where traditional and modern buildings have been integrated into a harmonious whole. There is a fascinating exhibit related to the rescue of the Danish Jews in 1943. The museum is open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday, 1 to 4pm. Admission costs DKK30 ($5.10/£3) for adults; children ages 18 and under are free.

Less than a kilometer (1/2 mile) east of town stands the world's first coal-fired lighthouse, Nakkehoved Østre Fyr, Fyrvej 20 (tel. 48-30-16-31 ). Dating from 1772, it has been restored and turned into a nautical museum. You can drive there -- its location 2.5km (1 1/2 miles) east of town is marked from the town center (follow the signs marked NAKKEHOVED ØSTRE FYR). But the more invigorating method of reaching the lighthouse involves walking along a coastal footpath beginning in Gilleleje at Hovedgade on the east side of the fishing museum. It's open only June to September, Wednesday to Monday 1 to 4pm, charging an admission of DKK15 ($2.60/£1.50) for adults; children ages 11 and under are free.

Fiskerhuset (Old Fisherman's House) and Skibshallen (Ship Hall) are at Hovedgade 49 (tel. 48-30-16-31 ). "We've always looked to the sea," a local fisherman told us. "It's sustained our lives. Sometimes it took the lives of our brave men, but, even so, the sea and the food it gave us has always made it our faithful friend, although it gets turbulent at times." This is a restored fisherman's dwelling from the 1820s. The Hall presents the history of fishermen in the area from the Middle Ages to the present day, using the fishing hamlets between Hundested and Helsingør as the points of departure. The museum -- on the main street -- uses a variety of panoramic scenes, models of the boats, and exhibits on trades associated with fishing, to reveal how the industry has dominated local life. The hours and prices are the same as those previously mentioned for the lighthouse.

At Dronningmølle, the Rudolph Tegnersmuseum , Museumsvej 19, in Villingerød (tel. 49-71-91-77; bus: 340), is set 7km (4 1/3 miles) southwest of Gilleleje. You can reach it by driving southwest along the coastal route (no. 237) and then following the signs pointing south to the museum from Dronningmølle. Surrounded by heather-covered hills that might remind you of Scotland (although this region of Zealand is often referred to as "Russia"), this museum is devoted to the artist Rudolph Tegner (1873-1950). "So why should I come here to see the works of what's-his-name?" you might ask. Tegner is worth discovering, as his art is provocative with disturbing elements. "He makes you think," the curator told us. "Isn't that reason enough to come here?" At the end of your visit, you'll have to answer the big question for yourself: Was Tegner, born in 1873, the great artist he considered himself to be, an art megalomaniac, a crazy genius, or the world's worst sculptor? Fourteen of his bronzes are displayed in an adjacent sculpture park, 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) of protected countryside. The museum houses Tegner's collection of 250 sculptures in plaster, clay, bronze, and marble, some of monumental proportions. Selected pieces of furniture from the artist's home and a sarcophagus containing his body make the museum a monument to this individual and controversial avant-garde artist. It's open April 15 to May, Tuesday to Sunday noon to 5pm; June to August, Tuesday to Sunday 9:30am to 5pm; September to the third Sunday in October, Tuesday to Sunday noon to 5pm. It's closed the rest of the year. Admission costs DKK45 ($7.70/£4.50) for adults and is free for children under age 12.

Der er ingen tvivl om at havnen er Gillelejes omdrejningspunkt. Det er her, man naturligt søger ned for at mærke stemningen, slentre på molen og kigge på fiskekutterne og lystsejlere. Gilleleje Havn er Sjællands største erhvervshavn. Bådværftet er der ikke for turisternes skyld, ligesom stejlepladsens fiskenet, kulørte vimpler og tovværk heller ikke er det. Og netop derfor er havnen så attraktiv.

Byen tager godt imod sine gæster og har gjort det siden begyndelsen af 1900-tallet, hvor de første turister dukkede op. Så nyd den maritime atmosfære, stranden og naturen omkring Gilleleje, og spis et dejligt fiskemåltid på havnen, mens børnene tumler sig på Stejlepladsens populære naturlegeplads .

Kulturhavnen med bibliotek, biograf, restaurant og et væld af kulturelle arrangementer er et nyere samlingspunkt for både lokale og turister. De mange special butikker, supermarkeder, restauranter og caféer vidner om, at Gilleleje lever hele året.

Har du ungerne med, så besøg legepladsen på Stejlepladsen , som er et eldorado for børn med rutsjebane, klatrestativ, skibssandkasse, åleruse og marsvinegynger. Her kan de små fange fisk, og forældrene kan tage en kaffe to go og nyde den forbløffende smukke legepladsudsigt.

Skulle sulten melde sig, byder havnen på mange indbydende restauranter med terrasse- og gårdmiljøer. Du kan også købe friske fisk hos fiskehandlerne, hvor der er alt, hvad hjertet begærer i glasmontrerne: jomfruhummere, laks, rødspætter, røgvarer til lune fiskefrikadeller og lækre fiskeanretninger.

There’s no doubt that Gilleleje’s focal point is its harbour. This is where you naturally gravitate to soak up the atmosphere, stroll along the pier and look out at the fishing boats and sailors. Gilleleje Harbour is Sealand’s largest commercial port. The boatyard is not there for the tourists, nor are the fishing net poles, colourful pennants and ropes. And that’s precisely why the harbour is so appealing.

But the city welcomes its visitors and has done so since the early 1900s when the first holidaymakers arrived. So enjoy the maritime atmosphere, the beach and the nature around Gilleleje, and savour an excellent fish dinner at the harbour while the children run about at Stejlepladsen’s popular nature playground.

The cultural harbour with a library, cinema, restaurant and a host of cultural events all year round is a new gathering place for locals and tourists alike. And the many speciality shops and supermarkets are proof that Gilleleje thrives all year long.

Gilleleje is surrounded by nature and is thus a great starting point for both cycling and walking activities. From Gilleleje you can follow the Gilbjergstien path all the way to the highest point in Gilleleje, Gilbjerg. There you will experience fantastic views across the Kattegat to Kullen in Sweden.

If you like walking, then find time to experience Kirkegaard by Nature, which is a more or less 12 km/7 mi long walk. You will walk in the footsteps of the world-famous Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard. The walk starts and ends in Gilleleje. Take a walk around Maglehøjene by Rågeleje.

If you are in the mood for a great excursion, a good tip is to walk from Gilleleje Harbour out to Nakkehoved Lighthouse. This is a really great walk. You will go past the harbour and the fishermen’s houses, close to a beautiful area with delightful houses and then you will suddenly find yourself in a forest where you can see the lighthouse. Sometimes you can even be fortunate enough to spot a seal from the high points. Nakkehoved Lighthouse is a lovely place run by volunteers.

At the top of a 30-metre high cliff at the absolutely northernmost point of Zealand, Gilleleje Badehotel rules atop Gilbjerghoved. When you add the three storeys of the hotel to the height of the cliff, you then have a unique view across the sea and shore. You can see all the way to Kullen in Sweden and enjoy the acrobatics of birds in flight across Oresund and Kattegat.

In the heart of the town of Gilleleje, with the beach in the backyard and the harbour as a neighbour, is the historic Hotel Gilleleje Strand. The hotel is only 100 meters away from the city's best beach and side by side with the atmospheric fishing port in Gilleleje.

If you are more into camping life, the campsite Kongernes Feriepark is located by Smidstrup Strand. It is a 4-star campsite, close to nature and close to the coast.

During our lunch break in Gillelege, we had an extraordinary experience. As we savored our meal, birds and seagulls gathered around us, creating a captivating scene. The view was truly breathtaking. Luckily, we were prepared with a convenient foldable travel bag for our food, making the entire experience hassle-free. Afterward, we headed down to the beach, and it turned out to be an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable time.

Tivoli Gardens: A Whirlwind of Fantasy and Fun

Returning to Copenhagen, our journey takes a whimsical turn as we explore Tivoli Gardens, one of the world's oldest amusement parks. Established in 1843, Tivoli Gardens seamlessly blends nostalgia with modern thrills, creating an enchanting experience for visitors of all ages.

The park's iconic wooden roller coaster, Rutschebanen, harks back to the golden age of amusement parks, while newer attractions showcase cutting-edge technology. Tivoli Gardens is not merely an amusement park; it's a cultural institution that hosts concerts, theater performances, and a myriad of cultural events throughout the year.

One of the rides at Tivoli Gardens was a lot like "It's a Small World," with its charming elements and delightful atmosphere.

DANSK JODISK MUSEUM

Upon entering the Danish Jewish Museum, visitors are immersed in a thought-provoking space designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. The museum's layout, reflecting the tumultuous journey of the Danish Jewish community, aims to evoke emotional responses. Angular walls, tilted floors, and unconventional shapes in interconnected spaces challenge perceptions, fostering a sense of disorientation for empathy and reflection.

The Holocaust exhibit stands as the centerpiece, a powerful space commemorating the struggles of Danish Jews during World War II. Perched on a weathered rock along Copenhagen's Langelinie promenade, the Little Mermaid statue stands as a timeless symbol of both Danish folklore and the enduring appeal of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. Unveiled in 1913, this iconic bronze statue, sculpted by Edvard Eriksen, has become one of Denmark's most beloved and recognizable landmarks. The statue captures the poignant moment when the mermaid, a character from Andersen's fairy tale of the same name, gazes longingly towards the sea.
