Inambakan Falls is known for having a beautiful 100-ft waterfall that plunges into a wide pool of blue water. Surrounded by lush jungle greenery it is indeed an amazing scene. However, what makes Inambakan Falls such a memorable adventure is the multi-level trek to different pools and waterfalls.

In this blog post, I’ll share everything you need to know about an adventure to Inambakan Falls.

WHERE IS INAMBAKAN FALLS

Inambakan Falls is a solid four-hour journey from Cebu City. When I visited, I was based in Moalboal and the drive took less than an hour on the motorbike. It is a beautiful coastal drive through all of the small towns in South Cebu so the time passes quickly. When you reach the town of Ginatilan there are signs that point to Inambakan Falls or you can ask a local.

However, the easiest way to find the falls is just to follow the pin below on Google Maps, which is accurate. Don’t worry about following Google Maps until you reach the small town of Ginatilan.

The road is pretty solid the whole way but most people use a motorbike. A car can make the entire trail until the trailhead and ticket office. The drive is pretty scenic and we even stopped to shoot a photo with the drone!

GETTING A GUIDE FOR INAMBAKAN FALLS

Our guide was a young guy called Clifford. He was 16-years old and spoke good enough English for us to chat the whole day. He stopped school and now is a full-time guide. At first, I thought a guide might be unnecessary if it was just one waterfall but having a guide was great to explore all five levels.

They showed us where to jump, where to land and happily jumped first to test the waters. Clifford was pretty crazy and jumped head first into some pretty shallow water. He was a great kid and we really enjoyed getting to know him throughout the day.

We paid Clifford 100 pesos per person and we were a group of four people. He didn’t ask for a set amount and this is generally more than would be asked for. However, we were with him for five hours taking lots of photos.

That is a total of $8 USD from our entire group for his 5-hour shift. This is a photo below of Clifford getting sideways.

MY EXPERIENCE AT INAMBAKAN FALLS

When we arrived at the entry to Inambakan Falls and paid our entrance fee of 50 pesos per person. I didn’t think we would need a guide but they paired us with one and it turned out great as we discovered all five levels of Inambakan.

The trail begins down to the main waterfall along stairs. Within ten minutes you will reach the main attraction, the main waterfall at Inambakan Falls. The main waterfall is a 100ft flow of water, which crashes down into the blue pool of water.

I really love the limestone cliffs behind the waterfall. The orange tinge contrasts so vividly against the strong blue of the pool below.

We swam behind the waterfall into the cave and explored the rocks of the main pool before sending a couple of jumps into the pool below. You could adventure here for hours and it is an adventure in itself. However,  there are five levels at Inambakan so this is just part of the experience.

We continued up the second level and found a small pool with another waterfall. It wasn’t quite as epic as the first waterfall but there were a few footholes carved into the waterfall so I went for a climb and explore.

The third level was such an incredible spot. A crystal clear pool, deep enough for cliff jumping, sits in front of a backdrop of idyllic palm trees. It is a slice of paradise right in the middle of the jungle. The water can be shallow in parts but it is clear enough to see exactly where the rocks are and where it safe to jump.

I thought that with all the surrounding palms it might be a good spot to send up the drone for an aerial view of the location. I ended up flying all the way back to the main waterfall for a look also!

What are my favorite pieces of gear for waterfall adventures?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a waterfall adventure . These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my waterfall adventure essentials.

• Quick-Dry Towel : A quick-dry towel is a must for travelers. It hardly takes up any room and dries in seconds.
• GoPro Hero 12 : The best and easiest way to capture your underwater and snorkeling adventures.

Next, we headed to the fifth level, skipping the ‘boring’ fourth level according to the guides. The fifth level definitely wasn’t boring. A four-meter cliff jump had is launching into a tight landing zone from above the waterfall. Clifford was a loose unit sending head-first dives into the shallow water as only a local would.

There were several other groups at the waterfall throughout the day but each group seems to enjoy a level and move on leaving the next group to enjoy it for themselves. We only ever shared a level with one other group at a time.

We spent over five hours at Inambakan Falls but you can definitely do it all in under two hours. We took tons of photos, flew drones, had cliff-jumping contests and chilled out along the way. I’d definitely plan for the full day at Inambakan Falls to make the most of the experience. You don’t need to visit other waterfalls in the area on that day because you are seeing five unique spots at Inambakan Falls itself.

FACTS ABOUT INAMBAKAN FALLS

• Location: Inambakan Falls is located in Ginatilan, a town in the southwestern part of the island province of Cebu, Philippines.
• Height: The waterfall is approximately 100 feet high, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the region.

WHERE TO STAY IN CEBU?

I really think that if you are going to be exploring Cebu, the best place to stay is in Moalboal. There are a few reasons why!

Cebu City might be where you land at the airport but if you are looking for adventure, you will need to head south as soon as possible. Most of the best waterfalls, whale sharks, snorkeling with sardines and turtles are all down in the south of Cebu. So where do you stay to do all of these adventures? Moalboal!

Moalboal is a cool town, which is the free-diving and scuba capital of Cebu. There are tons of hostels, hotels, and hostels here as well as being close to all the waterfalls and hikes in the region.

Here are my recommendations on where to stay in Moalboal depending on your budget.

• Teobas Homestay – Value : You need to click on that link just to see how rad this place is. It has a staircase down to the ocean into crystal clear water. I can tell you, I have snorkeled out the front of this place with turtles many times. For about $30 USD you get a private room with all of the facilities you need. There is not much better than having ocean access and a bit of a sunset view!

• Dolphin House Resort – Luxury : If you are looking for a nice resort, Dolphin House is a 5-star resort with a huge pool for less than $200 USD per night. It has ocean access, great restaurant, chilling areas and a beautiful garden throughout the property.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT CEBU

When considering the weather, the best time to visit Cebu, Philippines, is generally during the dry season which runs from December to May. During this period, the weather is more predictable, with less chance of rain disrupting outdoor activities. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

• Dry Season (December – May) : This period is characterized by less rainfall and more sunshine. Among these months, February to May are especially good as they tend to be hot and dry, making them perfect for beach-related activities.
• Cool Months (December – February) : The months of December to February are part of the dry season but are slightly cooler compared to other months. This makes it a good time to visit if you prefer more moderate temperatures.
• Hot Months (March – May) : These months can get quite hot, but if you’re planning on spending time at the beach or by the pool, this could be the ideal time for you.

TRANSPORT OPTIONS FOR CEBU

There’s lots of different transport options to get around Cebu depending on the size of your group, travel style and length of your journey. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect.

Moped: The best way to get around Cebu Island is through moped/scooter rentals. A moped can be rented for about $8 a day but that price may come down if your rental is more than a week long. The roads aren’t always great to and from the waterfalls and hikes so drive safely. You will need your regular drivers license from your home country and a helmet to avoid any issues. Below are the other main transport options for Cebu.

• Tricycles : the most common means of private transportation in the Philippines, accommodating 2-4 passengers, more than a motorcycle. This allows you to hire a driver to transport you to various attractions and things to do in Cebu.
• The Habal Habal : essentially a “scooter taxi,” is an economical option for single passengers who don’t wish to rent their own vehicle.
• Jeepneys : vibrant buses used by locals for transportation in the Philippines. Operating on fixed routes, they provide a shared riding experience and offer a unique opportunity to interact with the local community. Expect to be crammed in like sardines but it’s the authentic transport mode for locals.
• Vans : available for transportation, typically offered by resorts, hotels, and private transportation companies. This option will be the most expensive, it can be a worthwhile choice during rainy weather or for larger groups.

INAMBAKAN FALLS, GINATILAN CEBU: Ultimate Travel Guide

Inambakan Falls in the tiny town of Ginatilan is one of the most popular waterfalls in South Cebu, and for good reason. It’s made up of five turquoise blue cascades in the middle of a tropical jungle, and it’s easily accessible to just about anyone. It’s a natural playground and is visited year round by locals and tourists alike.

Our trip in early 2021 was a little different from the usual Inambakan Falls visit. Despite just about every other waterfall in the area being reopened to local tourism, Inambakan Falls remained closed for reasons that made little sense. We had a very clear goal for our Cebu trip though – do everything before tourism restarts so we can create our guides. Inambakan Falls is part of that everything , so we went on an incognito mission to get as many photos as possible. Don’t try this at home.

WHERE IS INAMBAKAN FALLS

Inambakan Falls is towards the southern tip of Cebu island, in the town of Ginatilan. It’s a good 3.5 hours from Cebu City, which is not impossible. However, if you want to make things easier, we recommend spending a few days in Moalboal and driving from there instead. It’s only 1 hour from Moalboal, and you can hit up dozens of other sites while you’re in the area. Check out our South Cebu series here for some inspo.

The drive to Inambakan Falls is pretty cruisey for the most part, as you just stick to the coastal highway until you reach Ginatilan town proper. From there you cut inland and follow Google Maps to Inambakan Falls. We took our car but most people take scooters, and you can drive all the way up to the entrance.

INAMBAKAN FALLS CEBU ENTRANCE FEE

You’ll need to pay a ₱50/$1 USD entrance fee per person and another ₱10 for parking. Normally, you can opt for a guide who can take you to all five levels of Inambakan Falls, and you should tip them at least ₱50. If you do get a guide, make sure you tell them you want to go to all the levels. The first time Carson went his guide only showed him the first few so he missed out. We obviously didn’t get a guide this time around as the falls were closed but we did pick up a couple dogs who stayed with us the whole time.

HIKING TO INAMBAKAN FALLS GINATILAN CEBU

It’s less of a hike and more of a 10 minute leisurely stroll to Inambakan Falls. From the parking area it’s an easy downhill climb along concrete steps until you reach the river, and from there you take the path upriver to the first level. The river walk is beautiful, with gatorade blue water and lush tropical rainforest.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT INAMBAKAN FALLS

The first level of Inambakan Falls is the tallest and most powerful waterfall, with a large swimming area. Since we made our trip as quick as possible, we didn’t get to enjoy a swim, but after standing on that rock for 5 minutes Zowie came out drenched from the waterfall spray.

From the main waterfall we climbed up some steps to the second level, and although we didn’t have a guide, our dogs were more than happy to show us the way. It was clear they’ve really missed having tourists around to play with and get food from.

The second level was very rough and rugged, with no man made structures in sight (just how we like it). If you’re looking to have a comfortable picnic then the first level is best since it has cottages, but if you just want to bask in unadulterated nature then we recommend you keep on climbing.

Since we were trying to be stealthy, we decided not to stick around for too long, but we couldn’t leave without busting out the drone. We hiked back the way we came from (with our dogs) so that we weren’t technically at Inambakan Falls anymore and snapped a few aerial shots that show the cascading beauty of the falls. Mission accomplished.

Inambakan Falls: Travel Guide to the Best of Ginatilan, Cebu

The southern part of Cebu Province is dotted with numerous majestic waterfalls characterized by its turquoise-colored water due to its limestone soil, one of them is the towering Inambakan Falls in the town of Ginatilan , approximately four hours away from the city. It is a tall and beautiful waterfalls, and quite surprising that despite its grandeur, this beautiful gem remains generally offbeat.

Situated in the highland barangay of Calabawan, Inambakan Falls is among the highest cascades in the province. It is in fact a five-layer waterfalls with a towering 100-feet tall main cascade coming from two smaller drops atop named Bugnawan and Kampael, flowing into a deep natural turquoise-colored pool below.

The first three waterfalls are easily accessible with its clear and established trail while the other two rest farther upstream. To see all the five cascades, it is best to have assistance from a local guide.

There are myths and folklore that are still attached to the place, and some say that it is enchanted. But if there is one thing certain, it is the fact that Inambakan Falls is truly an enchanting place!

How to Get to Inambakan Falls

To get to Inambakan Falls from Cebu City, catch a bus to Bato-Samboan via Barili at Cebu South Bus Terminal and get off at the town of Ginatilan, regular fare is P176 per person for an aircon bus and travel time is roughly three to four hours. The falls is approximately four kilometers from the highway of Ginatilan town proper, you need to catch a motorbike to take you to its trailhead at Barangay Calabawan (P100 per motorbike / round-trip).

Entrance fee is P50 per person and guide is now required. Guides are readily available at the registration area and their fee is on tip basis.

Have you heard about San Pedro Calungsod? He’s hometown was Ginatilan! He was a Catholic martyr and the second Filipino Saint. (Side question: Any of you guys remember who the first Filipino saint is?)

San Pedro Calungsod was killed in year 1672 in Guam with Diego Luis de San Vitores during a mission.

Ginatilan was once named as “Hinatdan” which means the things were brought there. During the Spanish times, they renamed it to Ginatilan.

Ginatilan Millennium Park

Ginatilan Millennium Park is located at the center of the town, in which government institutions are situated. The “plaza” planning concept was introduced to us by Spanish and been adopted since then. Every town has its own plaza, where all the government buildings and church surround it.

You can also notice the modern lighthouse. The beacons and monitoring systems are still functioning to warn marine vessels. It has rails and post along the edge to prevent accidents.

St. Gregory the Great Parish

St. Gregory the Great Parish has a Baroque architecture made of cut coral stones held by mortar. The church was constructed in February 2, 1829. It became a Parish church in 1874 with Rev. Fr. Clemente Nadella as the first priest. The belfry was constructed in March 25, 1883.

The church has 6 brass bells in different sizes and dimension. The 4 bells remained hanged while the other 2 is placed on the floor at the belfry.

Inambakan Falls

Inambakan Falls is located in Barangay Cabalawan near Bugnawan Falls. It is the most visited falls among all the other falls in Ginatilan. It is 100 ft (30 meters) tall and accessible through motorcycles.

It also has cottages made by residents near the area.

Bugnawan Falls

Bugnawan Falls is along the Samboan-Ginatilan border. It was named “Bugnawan” which means cold. The waterfall is 20 meter in height and 3 meters deep (Never try to jump off!)

Kampael Falls

Kampael Falls was named after the owner of the land, Rafael. The place was called “Kang Rafael” (Rafael’s) and abbreviated into Kampael. The waterfall is 13 meters tall and has a small basin.

If you want to visit Ginatilan Falls from Cebu City, you have to go to South Bus Terminal and hop in to a bus that shows a “Bato via Barili” sign. Tell the driver or conductor to drop you in Ginatilan. From the town, you can get a motorcycle ride to your destination.

Mt. Hambubuyog

Mt. Hambubuyog occupies the land area between Ginatilan and Samboan. At the top, you can witness the scenic view of Tañon Strait and Negros Island.

Inambakan Falls: Nature’s Gift to Ginatilan, Cebu

Many of us enjoy the company of nature’s wonders and find awe in the beautiful bounty given to us here on earth. The Philippines is quite lucky to have most of these treasures, and one of which was placed in the town of Ginatilan, Cebu – the Inambakan Falls .

Ginatilan a municipality situated in the Southwest part of Cebu , and is famous for being the hometown of the second Filipino saint, St. Pedro Calungsod . Most people visit the place because of their devotion to the saint and their love for nature.

And what is it really with Inambakan Falls? A lot actually. If curiosity got the better of you, then you should read on. Inambakan Falls is just one among the many waterfalls found in the Philippines. But what makes it so unique is the fact that it is called the hidden treasure of Ginatilan, which means, not a lot of people have gone there yet.

How to Get There

From Cebu City , you can take vans for hire or buses to get to the town of Ginatilan. Travel time can take 4-5 hours, depending on the traffic. Once you arrive, look for a tricycle or multicab that agrees in taking you there for a fair price. The falls is located 3.9 kilometers from the town center, and can be reached by small private vehicles. The road to the falls is a bit tricky, which poses a danger to those who are unfamiliar with it. If you don’t want problems along the way, it is best to hire a local driver who knows the path so well.

The multicab will eventually stop at a certain drop-off, since the road is smaller this time. You will need to trek to the falls for approximately five minutes. Nature lovers will surely get excited with the scenery along the way. The river starts appearing in a few minutes during the trek, and the path is surrounded by lush greens and coconut trees. By this time, you will hear the rustling sound of water from afar. Not long, the waterfalls will appear in front of you.

When going to the waters, it is important to stay alert for jagged stones and slippery rocks. The last thing you’d probably want during your visit here is getting injured or stabbed by rough rocks. It is also important to take precautionary measures when swimming. If you have lifevests, wear them before going into the water. Although there are some parts that are just shallow, it is wise to be cautious, especially if you have children who don’t know how to swim.

How to Enjoy the Stay

Just being with nature makes the travel all worth the while. But nothing still compares to taking a plunge into the cold waters of Inambakan. You can also trek to into the cliff and see the view of the river from above. It surely is not hard to find enjoyment in this piece of wonder from Mother Nature.

Small cottages are available for those who fancy staying there for a couple of hours. Since the place is not yet developed, there aren’t any hotels here, unfortunately. HOW TO GET TO SOUTH CEBU?

The best way how to get to South Cebu is from Cebu City to Moalboal on the public bus from South Cebu Bus Terminal in Cebu City.

There are hourly departures to Moalboal from South Cebu Bus Terminal starting as early as 5 am.

From Cebu City to South Cebu the journey time is around 3 to 4 hours on the bus and the cost is between 150-200 pesos.

HOW TO GET AROUND SOUTH CEBU?

There are a couple of options on how to get around and they are by scooter, habal habal (motorbike taxi), tricycle, and jeepney.

You can rent a scooter in Moalboal for as little as 300 pesos per day and make your own way around all of the attractions.

If you are not confident driving a scooter, the other option is to ride in a jeepney, tricycle, or habal habal, and the driver will know where to go in South Cebu.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT CEBU?

The best time to visit Cebu, weather-wise, is between April and July when temperatures are hot and there is barely any rainfall.

This is also high season in Cebu, so expect to see many tourists during these months.

I recommend visiting Cebu on the shoulder months of the high season between November and March which sees a bit of rainfall but usually only lasts for a couple of hours and the rest of the day is sunny.

Try to avoid the typhoon season in Cebu which is between August and October.

KAWASAN FALLS CANYONEERING

Kawasan Falls Canyoneering in Badian is without a doubt the most popular South Cebu tourist spot!

A visit to Kawasan Falls is the most adrenaline-pumping adventure to be had in the Philippines.

Whether it’s your first time canyoneering or not, the Kawasan Falls experience is not to be missed on your South Cebu itinerary!

Kawasan Falls is located just 45 minutes drive from Moalboal in South Cebu.

I recommend pre-booking a  Kawasan Falls Tour Package online with Viator which includes return transfers from your accommodation in Moalboal so you won’t need to worry about the logistics.

Upon arriving at the Kawasan Canyoneering Headquarters, we met our guide Raul who got us fitted into the required safety equipment such as water shoes, life jackets, and helmets.

We took a ride on the back of a motorbike to the top of the mountain and before we knew it we were completely submerged in the first rock pool.

Soon after, Raul made us sit down at the edge of a one-meter cliff before he gently pushed us backward over a small set of falls into another rock pool below.

At this point, I knew we were in for an epic adventure!

We then continued navigating our way through knee-deep water that was as clear as crystal. The water trail took us through some amazing caves and natural rock slides.

There were also numerous cliff jumps ranging anywhere from three meters up to fourteen meters.

Do note that if you are afraid of heights you’ve always got the option to walk around the cliffs instead of jumping.

When you reach the end of the canyon it will bring you to the  famous Kawasan Falls .

You can spend as much time as you like at this tourist spot in Cebu South as there are about five different levels of waterfalls and several big cliff jumps to keep you entertained.

KAWASAN FALLS CANYONEERING TOUR

The best way to visit is to join the Kawasan Falls and Canyoneering Day Tour !

It includes transportation, lunch, all fees, snorkeling with sharks, the Sumilon Sandbar, and a fun guide!

OSMENA PEAK 

Osmeña Peak is most famous for being the highest point on Cebu Island and one of the must-see places to visit in South Cebu!

Due to Osmeña Peak being so popular, the best time to visit is early in the morning for sunrise, and this way you will beat the crowds.

If you would like to book a tour to Osmena Peak there is one that I can highly recommend which also includes the famous Kawasan Falls.

It’s a full-day tour that starts in Cebu City with a hotel pick-up, a guided tour to Osmena Peak plus Kawasan Falls, and then returning back to Cebu City.

If you visit Osmena Peak without a tour the entrance fee is 30 pesos. From the jump-off point, the hike to Osmena Peak is a short fifteen to twenty minutes along a narrow, rocky path passing by thinly forested areas and farmer’s crops.

What can you expect at Osmena Peak? One of the most beautiful Cebu south tourist spots… that’s what!!

At 1,013 meters above sea level, Osmena Peak boasts panoramic views of the coastlines on both sides of South Cebu and of course, the most fascinating hill formations that you will have likely never seen before.

These interesting rocks, hills, peaks, whatever you want to call them are other-worldly and it boggles me as to how they came to be.

From the summit of Osmena, these dominant peaks are seemingly endless as they stretch across the land like the spine of a Stegosaurus dinosaur.

Some say these rolling hills are reminiscent of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol as the landscape is quite similar, though each of these spots is unique to its location.

In the deep valleys below Osmena Peak in Cebu, you can see vividly green fields of farmer’s crops and on a clear day, you can spot the neighboring islands of Negros and Bohol.

CASINO PEAK

Another tourist spot Cebu South offer is the Casino Peak hike, often referred to as Lugsangan Peak, is an underrated South Cebu tourist spot.

If you are planning to visit Osmena Peak, I highly recommend taking the time to check out Casino Peak as well. Chances are you might even like this viewpoint better and I guarantee there will be fewer people at Lugsangan Peak, with a view that is equally as amazing!

After you pay the 30 pesos entrance fee, It’s a short ten-minute hike to the summit of Casino Peak where you’ll be welcomed with panoramic views of nearby rolling hills and pristine coastline below.

Along the trail, you’ll likely see some goats grazing in the long grass and when you reach the plateau at the top, there is a crop field with many rows of cabbages which I later found out belonged to the landowners.

You may think you have arrived at the top when you reach this point of the trek and I also thought the same because the trail isn’t clearly marked.

However, continue navigating your way around the rocky outcrop on the right-hand side and you’ll find the path to the Casino Peak summit.

The last section of the hike is a bit of a scramble up the rocks where we had to get our hands dirty but it was all worth it when we reached the summit of Casino Peak!

I must admit, I have never seen a viewpoint quite like the one from Casino Peak and I highly recommend adding it to your list of South Cebu tourist spots to see!

There is a narrow ridge along the top of Casino Peak that you can walk across but do so at your own risk and please watch your step.

BINALAYAN HIDDEN FALLS

Binalayan Falls, also referred to as Binalayan Hidden Falls, is one of the best Cebu waterfalls and I highly recommend adding it to your list!

Binalayan Falls is located in Samboan in South Cebu. From Oslob, it’s a 30-minute drive and from Moalboal it’s approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes drive to reach Binalayan Falls.

There are half a dozen waterfalls in Samboan, South Cebu so if you plan it right you can visit more than one waterfall in one day.

An ideal one-day South Cebu itinerary from Moalboal is to first visit Aguinid Falls, secondly Binalayan Hidden Waterfalls, and thirdly Dau Falls.

The Binalayan Falls entrance fee is 60 pesos which includes a guide and there is also a 10 pesos parking fee. Tipping your guide is completely up to you, but somewhere between 50–100 pesos would do.

There are a number of water crossings on the way to the main set of falls at Binalayan so it’s best to wear a pair of water shoes or flip-flops because your feet will get wet.

The first tier at Binalayan Falls features a shallow crystalline rock pool, a rest area with some make-shift benches and a tire swing hung from a tree.

It’s definitely worth taking a short break here in this tranquil little section of the trek.

The main falls at Binalayan Waterfall boast a 50ft tall rock face and the flow of water is divided into three separate streams that fill the basin beneath.

There is a cave behind the falls from which you can climb up and jump, but it’s best to let your guide go first to show you how it’s done.

The water is around two meters deep so I wouldn’t recommend diving headfirst. I touched the sandy bottom with my feet when I jumped, even with my knees bent.

There is also a range of cliff-jumping spots on the left-hand side of the falls, but even this is a bit sketchy due to the pool below being relatively shallow.

Only jump from a height you feel comfortable with, even if the guide encourages you to jump from a higher level just say no.

Apart from cliff jumping, you can hang out in the crystalline waters at the base of Binalayan Falls and explore the natural caves behind the falls.

SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS

Swimming with whale sharks is the main tourist attraction in South Cebu. Even though it’s a controversial activity it is also a very unique experience.

The Oslob Whale Shark experience is rated as one of the best places to swim with whale sharks in the Philippines.

I personally booked my  Cebu Whale Shark Tour online in advance with Viator.

This particular tour is the most top-rated Oslob Whale Shark Tour in Cebu with great reviews.

Every morning between the hours of 6 am and 12 pm, local Filipino fishermen feed the whale sharks close to the shore.

Small wooden boats then chauffeur tourists out to where it’s possible to jump in the water and swim with the whale sharks.

The Oslob whale shark watching area is no further than 50 meters from the beach. Before you know it you will arrive at the designated spot and the boatman will tell you to jump into the water.

As soon as you dive off the boat you will encounter these beautiful gentle giants face to face just beneath the surface.

A common question that gets asked is if it’s safe to go swimming with whale sharks in Cebu and the answer is Yes, 100%.

Even though whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean that can grow up to 32ft and weigh 200 tonnes, they are very humble creatures and there’s nothing to be afraid of.

The Cebu whale sharks activity has been controversial since it started. I would much rather see the whale sharks in their natural habitat without the feeding of them and without crowds of tourists.

However, the community in Oslob seems to be working hard to control and educate the crowds, and limit impacts on the whale sharks.

SUMILON ISLAND

Sumilon Island is yet another one of the best South Cebu tourist spots just 20 minutes by boat from Oslob. It’s the best day trip or overnight stay you can do when exploring South Cebu.

The only access to Sumilon Island is by boat which departs daily from Mainland Bancogon in Oslob to Sumilon Island at 8:00 am, 9:30 am, and 11:00 am.

The return boat from Sumilon Island to Mainland Bancogo departs at 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm, and 5:00 pm.

I recommend purchasing the Bluewater Sumilon Day Pass online in advance with Viator which gives you access to all of the facilities at Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort such as the infinity pool, private beach area, freshwater lagoon, and restaurant.

The Bluewater Sumilon Day Pass also includes other activities on Sumilon Island such as snorkeling, Sumilon sandbar, hiking trails, and return boat transfers from Oslob.

If you wish to spend a night on Sumilon Island, there is only one accommodation on the island and that is the Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort .

This 4-star resort features its very own private beach, a freshwater lagoon, an outdoor infinity pool, 2 restaurants, glamping tents, beachside cottages, and private villas!

The Sumilon Island sandbar is the most iconic attraction on the island and the best spot to watch the sunset!

There was only one other couple on the Sumilon sandbar when I arrived, and that was it. Sumilon Island really proves itself as one of the best-kept Cebu tourist spots!

Sumilon Island sandbar is best visited at low tide when there is more exposed sand, though it is also just as good on high tide in my opinion.

Fine white sand and crystalline waters are what make the Sumilon sandbar so pristine.

Definitely stick around on the Sumilon sandbar for sunset because as I said earlier it’s the best location on the island to watch the last rays of the sun as it sets over the horizon.

Capture All Your Adventures!

My visit to Dao Falls in Samboan was  low-key one of the best adventures I had in South Cebu and I highly recommend adding this epic South Cebu tourist spot to your list of places to visit!

So what is so unique about Dao Waterfall? Well, to start with, it is recognized as the tallest set of falls in the Samboan region and secondly, the jungle trail trek to get to the main set of falls is an epic adventure in itself. Convinced?!

The entrance fee to Dao Falls is 60 pesos which includes a guide and the parking fee is an additional 10 pesos.

Trekking to Dau Falls from the parking lot takes around twenty to thirty minutes including stops for photos. It isn’t a difficult trek by any means though do note that your feet will get wet along this jungle trail.

In most parts, it requires walking through knee-deep water and I recommend bringing a pair of  slip-on waterproof shoes  for these sections.

The first part of the trek to Dao Falls is a concrete staircase with around 200 steps that leads directly down into the valley and once you reach the bottom, this is where the real adventure begins!

An impressive bamboo suspension bridge surrounded by coconut palms stretches across the river and on the other side is the beginning of the jungle trail to Dau Waterfall.

Vines cover the canyon walls and blue Gatorade-colored waters cascade seamlessly past us as we navigated our way toward Dao Waterfall.

The adventurous hike to Dao Falls, in my opinion, is what makes this Cebu south tourist spot so unique.

There are many turquoise rock pools along the way that are well worth stopping at for a quick dip and this is where you’ll likely get your best photos.

When you reach the top you’ll be graced with the epic sight of Dao Falls which towers 50 meters tall above the large catch basin.

The pools at the base of the falls aren’t quite as blue as the ones on the way up but it is still a worthy spot for a swim to cool off after the hike.

AGUINID FALLS

Aguinid Falls Cebu is one of the  most unique and exciting waterfalls in South Cebu. The multi-tiered Aguinid Falls is one heck of an adventure.

It’s not quite as popular as Kawasan Falls just up the road, but the word is spreading quickly about this awesome tourist destination in Cebu that supports eco-tourism.

Aguinid Falls is located in the small village of Samboan in South Cebu. From Oslob, it’s a 30-minute drive and from Moalboal it’s approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes drive to reach Aguinid Falls.

The entrance fee to Aguinid Falls is 300 pesos which includes compulsory safety equipment (wet shoes, helmet, and life jacket), two guides, and also the tip for the guides.

It’s definitely not the cheapest Cebu waterfall I’ve been to but the money spent was well worth the adventure!

As I mentioned earlier, Aguinid Falls in Cebu is a multi-tiered waterfall with eight levels of falls to be exact. Eight freakin’ waterfalls, can you believe it?!

Although the locals say there are eight levels of falls, only six levels are currently accessible as they are still working to improve the trail to the higher levels.

This is not your typical waterfall where you take a short trek in, go for a dip and take photos, but rather an epic and very physical adventure that involves jumping, climbing ropes, and navigating your way through the cascading falls.

It took us around two hours to complete the Aguinid Falls tour but that included many stops to take photos. For the average person, it would take around one hour from start to finish.

INAMBAKAN FALLS

Inambakan Falls in Ginatilan is at the top of my best Cebu waterfalls list for a couple of good reasons!

One is the blue Gatorade-colored springs and jungle surrounds at this location and two is because there are multiple levels at Inambakan Falls which makes this one of the most epic South Cebu tourist spots to explore.

Inambakan Falls is located in the small village of Ginatilan in South Cebu. The falls are best visited from the nearby beach town of Oslob, which is approximately a 45-minute drive.

You can also visit Inambakan Falls from Moalboal and this drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The entrance fee at Inambakan Falls is 50 pesos and an additional 10 pesos for parking.

The hike down to the main falls takes no more than 5 minutes from the jump-off point and the trail winds upstream until it emerges at the base of the 100-foot-tall Inambakan Falls.

My favorite feature of Inambakan Falls is the milky blue pool of water in the catch basin which gets its color from the limestone cliffs that surround the falls.

Once you’ve taken a dip in the milky blue waters at the main set of falls, continue hiking along the trail and up the stairs to the next few levels of these Ginatilan Falls.

You can stop in at the second level of Inambakan which features a shallow rock pool right at the top of the main set of falls.

The level up from here was my favorite because there are several cliff-jumping spots into a number of refreshing rock pools.

Continuing on, I followed the trail up a little higher to the top level of Inambakan Falls which features a large swimming hole and more cliff-jumping spots.

The lush jungle that surrounds the area contrasts beautifully with the water and adds to the tranquility of this epic South Cebu tourist spot.

TUMALOG FALLS

Tumalog Falls in Oslob is one of the most popular tourist spots on the island!

A visit to Tumalog Falls is typically combined with the Oslob Whale Shark Tour which is another great activity you can add to your itinerary!

There is one tour that I can recommend which is a full-day trip from Cebu City and it includes swimming with whale sharks in Oslob and a visit to Tumalog Falls.

The Tumalog Falls entrance fee is 50 pesos if you plan to visit without a tour and the opening times are Monday to Sunday from 6 am to 5 pm.

Tumalog Falls is quite unique, featuring a mellow curtain of water falling down the face of a monolithic limestone cliff. There is a large swimming area at the base of the falls where you can take a dip to cool off.

The color of the water in the basin is that classic milky blue tinge that the Philippines is most famous for!

Tumalog Falls Oslob is surrounded by tall bamboo and mossy walls adding to the jungle vibes that you will find here.

A large cave can also be found on the left-hand side of the falls if you wish to explore deeper and get another cool perspective of Tumalog Falls from inside.

There are change rooms and toilet facilities for guests to use and also a small sari sari store if you wish to buy some water and light snacks.

I recommend spending around 1 hour at Tumalog Waterfalls before continuing, as it’s arguably the best place to unwind in Cebu South.

SWIM WITH SARDINES IN MOALBOAL

Another incredible tourist spot in South Cebu is the Sardine Run in Moalboal is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and not to be missed!

Imagine swimming with millions of flashing silver sardines as they circulate around you in an almost hypnotic spectacle.

The Sardine Run is located in Moalboal in South Cebu and the schools of fish can be found just a stone’s throw from the shoreline on the edge of the reef.

A common spot where the sardines gather is just offshore from Panagsama Beach, the main beach in Moalboal.

To go swimming with the sardines all you need to do is rent a mask and snorkel from your accommodation or from a store in town and swim out just 30-50 meters to where you will find the masses of sardines swimming around.

The sardines move around in spherical shapes known as bait balls to trick their predators and they tend to stick close to the surface where the water temperature is warmer.

They might be intimidating and scary at first but all you need to do is relax and marvel at the sardines as they move around in large schools.

Swimming with the sardines in Moalboal is one of the best South Cebu tourist attractions not to be missed!

WHITE BEACH MOALBOAL

If you’re in Cebu to chill, White Beach Moalboal is definitely one place to add to your itinerary.

This stunning stretch of coastline is just a short 15-minute drive from Moalboal, and it’s the perfect place to catch a spectacular sunset.

While it can get pretty busy on the weekends with both locals and tourists, there’s more than enough sand to go around. And if you want to avoid the crowds, just head there on a weekday.

While you’re there, be sure to check out the locals selling souvenirs and sea urchins. But there’s plenty to do besides just soaking up the sun.

You can swim, paddleboard, and snorkel in the water – How cool does that sound?

Also, it’s worth noting that there are several hotels near White Beach in Moalboal, so why not stay for the night and see the sunset after a day exploring around?

I personally recommend Bonita Oasis Beach Resort , which is just a few minutes away and is modern, clean, and has a delicious breakfast in the morning! How’s that for a tourist spot South Cebu?

Next up is Bojo River and Hermit’s Cove in Aloguinsan, but let me tell you about the river first and then the cove in the next section.

This natural paradise is a bit of a drive, about an hour north of Moalboal. And here’s a little secret: since it’s farther north than most South Cebu tourist spots, it makes for an easy day trip from Cebu City, only a four-hour round trip.

The Bojo River project is an eco-friendly mangrove, with a grand entrance along a bamboo boardwalk through dense Nipa palms.

The entrance fee is 400 pesos per person, and that includes a river tour with a local guide. Alternatively, you can get the premium package for 750 pesos per person and that includes lunch, the river tour, and endless laughter!

What I like about this Southern Cebu tourist spot is that the guide explains everything about the mangrove, from the fish and birds to the mangrove and the project itself.

After the boat ride, you’ll head to Hermit’s Cove, a stunning beach not far from the mangrove.

All in all, this is one of the best things to do in South Cebu!

HERMIT’S COVE

Picture this: A hidden gem of a beach, with turquoise waters that reveal an underwater paradise of corals.

That’s what you’ll find at Hermit’s Cove, a secluded spot to the left of the Bojo River mouth.

The adventure to get there is half the fun, as you can either visit at the end of your Bojo River cruise or hike down from the hilltop.

Once you arrive, you’ll see picnic huts where you can have a snack (there are plenty of sellers around, in case you didn’t have lunch at the Bojo River) and relax.

The catch? It gets pretty crowded no matter the time of the day you visit, which isn’t great but you still get to enjoy.

Also, keep in mind that the coral is pretty sharp, so the beach isn’t the best for swimming, but you can definitely stay and work on your tan!

MANTAYUPAN FALLS

When it comes to waterfalls, bigger is always better, and Mantayupan Falls in Barili definitely lives up to that expectation.

At almost 100 metres tall, this towering waterfall is the tallest in all of Cebu, making it a must-see when exploring South Cebu.

Best of all, it’s super accessible, so you don’t have to hike for hours like on Casino or Osmena Peak. From the entrance, it’s only a short stroll before you’re standing at the edge of the base.

Also, it’s relatively cheap all in all, as the entrance fee costs 200 pesos per person, and that includes the parking, a life jacket and the conservation fee.

Note that wearing a life jacket is mandatory if you take a dip.

Apart from that, there’s an on-site restaurant where you can order local Filipino dishes, and that is great if you plan to spend a couple of hours or more here!

WHERE TO STAY IN SOUTH CEBU

The best area to stay to visit all of the tourist spots in the South of Cebu is Moalboal which is located on the South East Coast of Cebu Island.

Moalboal has hundreds of accommodation options to choose from, so I have narrowed it down to a few of the best places to stay to fit the needs of budget backpackers, luxury travelers, and everyone in between.

How to get there

By Plane: From Manila, there is a daily flight going to Cebu City. By Boat: Cebu City's domestic port is the country's busiest. Cebu City is home to almost 80 percent of the country's passenger vessels. The country's largest shipping lines, namely WG&A, Sulpicio Lines, Trans-Asia, George & Peter Lines and Lorenzo Shipping Lines, are headquartered in Cebu. Large passenger ferries with a capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 passengers ply the more distant routes such as Manila, Davao, Butuan City, Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro.

From the airport, you can ride a multicab, jeepney, or taxi. Simply ask around for which route to take. They are available all day round and cover most of the nooks and crannies of the city. Just be sure you know what part of the city the jeepney will take you to.

Ginatilan is accessible by various land transport vehicles from the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City.  It is a 4-hour bus ride from Cebu City by the following: •    Ceres and Rough Rider buses via Barili route. •    Ceres and Sunrays buses via Oslob route. •    Rented cars and vehicles

Explore the baroque architecture of St. Gregory: The Great Parish Church

This 195-year old church is built using coral stones and is one of the old heritage sites of the Queen City of the south. It is a symbol of the steadfast faith of the Ginatilan residents. As a way to celebrate their history and faith, the town will be holding a fiesta called the “Hinatdan Festival” which is usually held a week after the Holy Week of each year.

Take a leap at the Inambakan Falls

With its 100-foot height, this waterfall is second to the Kawasan Falls in Badian, Cebu. Inambakan Falls has turquoise blue waters which rushes to a natural pool at the bottom. There are 4 levels of the waterfall that you can enjoy. Nonetheless, always be sure to have a local guide with you or a professional for a safer and fun experience.

Snack on Ginatilan’s delicacy: Sinakol & Palagsing

Wrapped and smoked in fresh banana leaves, “sinakol” is a delicious mixture of coconut milk, corn drits, natok, and other local ingredients that makes it a go-to snack for the Ginatilan folks. Aside from that, there’s also the “palagsing” which is a moist and chewy dessert similar to suman.

Reconnect with nature at Ka Eling’s Beach House

Ginatilan also has beautiful beaches, although not entirely a white sand beach, its seascape and views are worth the trip. The waters are also crystal clear, especially at Ka-Eling’s Beach House where Instagram-worthy photos can be taken when the sun sets. And the best part is that the resort is owned and managed by a family, so each member of the staff is extremely accommodating. Their rates are also reasonable, especially when you go with your barkada of 5 where you will only get to spend around Php 300.00 each for a night.

Get Intimate with the Queen City of the South

A Scenic Stop in Lovely Ginatilan

NOTE: I was supposed to post this months ago but then things got a bit hectic. Then, when I finally got a chance to focus all my energy on my blogs, even more things happened. And now I am here in Vietnam for a long-term job assignment. Con: I won’t be able to travel around Cebu! Pro: I can focus on all my back-logs and go back to writing! 🙂 By the way, you may have noticed that the quality of my photographs has changed a bit. I can explain. After around five years of non-stop use, my Nikon D5000 is now finally showing signs of old age — unresponsive shutter button, flash that won’t work, viewfinder that’s darker than normal. The list goes own. You all know what that means. Worry not, though, as I am now about to start the long process of saving up for a new one. Haha.

So, it was the long summer break. As usual, my whole family traveled to the municipality of Dalaguete for a bit of bonding and relaxation. We normally stay from Maundy Thursday until Good Friday and travel back to the city on Black Saturday so we can spend Easter Sunday at home.

When we arrived in Dalaguete in the afternoon of Maundy Thursday, I got a message from my friend Anne. Anne’s ancestral home is in Malabuyoc, Cebu and her whole family was going home the next day for the long holiday. Not only that, 3 of our friends from work will be tagging along. And she wanted me to join them. So, she’s basically asking me to leave my family in the middle of a family holiday, traverse seven municipalities, and travel at least 40 kilometers just to be with them. Well, I figured that this doesn’t happen very often. In fact, I’ve never seen this small group (of people from work) gather 10 kilometers from home even on very special occasions. Ever. This was a once in a lifetime thing.

So I told my family the whole story and I promised to be back at the end of the day. Reluctant, true, but they ended up saying yes. Eventually. 😀

I left Dalaguete for Malabuyoc on my motorbike at around 9 am. This was going to be a nice, leisurely ride through the Southern towns of Cebu. This was going to be awesome.

After numerous stops, I finally reached the town of Malabuyoc just before 11 am. Anne, her husband Chad, and our friends Gie, Gino, and Edward were waiting for me at the side of the road. We went straight to the beach fronting Anne’s family’s property.

Just before lunch, we all agreed to check out the Binalayan Waterfall (Triple Drop Falls) in the nearby town of Samboan. However, when we reached the reception desk, we were told that we would have to wait for hours. Due to the long holiday, it’s like the whole Cebu also decided to travel to the best tourist destinations in the southern tip of the island. After a quick meeting, we decided to just head back to Malabuyoc and proceed to Kabutongan Falls , instead.

As we were cruising through the town of Ginatilan (all of us were on a three-wheeled tricycle- pick-up hybrid,) we decided to make a quick stop at the side of the road. I guess it was a mix of luck and good fortune. Because out of all the gazillion different areas where we could possibly stop, we ended up stopping at this amazing spot.

We parked our ride along the highway and slowly descended to the seawall below.

In the photo below is Anne, Chad, and their kids.

You see, protruding from the seawall is a fallen leaf-less tree (probably acacia.) The tree probably fell towards the ocean during a terrible storm. And instead of dying, it continued to thrive. Now, it has become part of the seawall (the seawall is now actually wrapped around it) where local kids relax and enjoy.

And also as a great photo op spot for tourists. Like Stacy here. 🙂

When we were done with all the photos (we probably took hundreds!) we continued driving back to Malabuyoc and straight to Kabutongan Falls.

Since it was the holy week, it was very hard to find food. Luckily, we found a chicken inasal along the way. Let’s eat!

We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the cool and relaxing waters of Kabutongan. By 5 pm we were on our way back to Anne’s family home. And by 6 pm, I was back on the road and headed for Dalaguete.

Ginatilan is a 5th class municipality situated in the southwestern coast of the island of Cebu and is about 135 kilometers from Cebu City . It was once a barrio of the Municipality of Samboan . The place got its name from the word “Hinatdan” and was later changed to “Ginatilan” since the Spaniards found it hard to pronounce the word “Hinatdan.”

Famous sites in Ginatilan include the Inambacan Falls , the Ginatilan Church and Ginatilan's town plaza known as the Millennium Park . Ginatilan's local delicacies include palagsing, tinumpi, and kinugay, which is made from Buli tree .

Inambacan (or Inambakan) Waterfalls is a must-see for nature lovers and trekkers. Nestled in the lush vegetation of the mountain of Sitio Calabawan, about 3 kilometers away from the town proper, this 3-level falls has refreshingly cool and soothing waters ideal for swimming.

Ginatilan's St. Gregory The Great Church was erected on February 2, 1829 as an extension of the Samboan Parish. It was given a parochial status only on October 5, 1847. This 180-year old church has a baroque architecture and is located at the heart of the town.

The Millenium Park is a seaside public park where townsfolk of every generation converge for a stroll, to relax, or enjoy the sunset across Ta ñon Strait . At a corner of the town's public park is a lighthouse to guide sea vessels plying the Ta ñon Strait at night.

On March 7, 2007 the Municipality launched the first " Hinatdan Festival " which they hope to celebrate every year. The festival is highlighted by colorful dancing of competing groups. The celebration is also in honor of the town's patron, St. Gregory the Great.
