How to Travel With Groupon: Are Groupon All-Inclusives Legit? My Experience and Advice

Most people know Groupon as a great site to purchase local deals at significantly reduced prices.

Today, I'll fill you in on if it's a viable option for travel deals specifically. By the way, this is NOT a sponsored post (but does contain some affiliate links).

I will be speaking from experience—in November 2016 two friends and I did a Groupon Getaway to Sri Lanka. I'll lead you through exactly how I went about assessing the validity of the Groupon and organizing the trip.

Why are some people hesitant to travel with Groupon?

I think the majority of Groupon's customers normally have no problem buying products or deals on Groupon because it seems like a direct transaction (though it's not), but buying a Groupon travel deal clearly goes through Groupon and  a tourism company and I think that puts people off.

I believe the biggest reason people are unsure about planning a trip through Groupon is that Groupon is a middle-man.

What does that mean?

Groupon operates by entering agreements with local merchants and businesses to help sell whatever product or service that business provides, at some sort of benefit to that business.  This benefit is a combination of reaching a wider audience through advertisement on Groupon's website and being able to sell deals in multiples.

Why does Groupon only sell travel deals in pairs? Are they trying to get more of my money?

As said above, selling deals in multiples is what Groupon does specifically for its travel deals, which they refer to as Groupon Getaways.

Every Groupon Getaway is sold in pairs. Meaning if you see a trip to the Maldives for 1000USD, that price is contingent on you buying two units of that particular deal. If you buy just one through Groupon you'll be subjected to a “singles” fee to compensate for not buying two.

Because of the pandemic, many local travel agencies and tour providers have softened on their usual “double occupancy” requirement.

Meaning: solo travelers, it's your time to shine!

Groupon Trip Single Person

What should I be looking for in a genuine Groupon Getaway?

The first thing you should know is that Groupon does very in-depth research on each business and merchant they work with. Groupon does not want a bad reputation, or worse a lawsuit, from a customer's a bad experience.

With more than 48.3 million global active customers and over 90% Customer satisfaction, I'm inclined to trust most businesses advertised on Groupon.

But, you can't be too sure.

I'll walk you through the exact Groupon Getaway that I went on and how I was sure that it was legit, and the right Groupon for our trip.

Example: My Sri Lankan Groupon Getaway

Groupon Travel - Getaway, Budget

My Sri Lankan Groupon Getaway.

Above is the exact  Groupon Getaway that my two friends and I went on. You should know that I was living in Dubai at the time, so this price is in Emirati dirhams (it would be 323.99USD). Getting this price for a trip to Sri Lanka from the US would be a much different price.

Part of the reason this trip is so inexpensive is that it did not include flights.

How can you tell?

If it included flights you would have seen the flights as drop-down option to pick, and it's also specified in the listing, as well as in the listing's header, as shown in the example below.

Azores Groupon Getaway Tips - Packs Light

Click this image to see this full Azores deal, and even book it for yourself!

You can see from just this screenshot the details it already provides, most important being the name of the tourism company that will be facilitating your trip. In the screenshot you can see it on the bottom right as “Nelum Holidays” along with the link to the company website right below it.

In any Groupon Getaway you purchase you'll see this, and be able to check out the specific tourism company. I highly recommend doing this, and doing some Google searches for reviews of that local tourism company.

If it's popular, the Groupon Getaway will have reviews posted directly on Groupon as well at the bottom of the listing. Those are invaluable as well.

Groupon Travel - Getaway, Budget

Always ready EVERY SINGLE DETAIL.

Above you'll  see details of the rest of my Sri Lanka travel listing. We wanted to make sure that we would have airport transport at the beginning and end of our trip as well as some meals would be included in our package. You're trip essentials will be listed under something along the lines of “Included with Package”, as is in the right of this screenshot.

If you book this Groupon expecting every meal, transport, flights, free money showers, etc. all included in your stay but you don't see it in that section, DON'T BOOK.

Read the fine print, or better, call the local company to know exactly what you're getting in your Getaway.

Groupon's expiration date, cancellation policy, upgrade options, and booking instructions are all things to diligently read before confirming your booking.

Well, how did my trip turn out?

In a word, incredible.

We booked the Getaway as a group of 4 people, and when that turned into 3 people I thought it would be a huge hassle negotiating with the local company and/or Groupon.

Luckily for us, the tourism company was kind enough to adjust the deal to let us 3 use our Groupon deals without a fourth person, and just put an extra bed in the one room. So my advice is when negotiating, always start with the local company as they're more likely to be flexible.

They sent us our itinerary in the days before our trip and I noticed that the days scheduled were moved around during the week (apparently the itinerary posted on Groupon is just a generic itinerary and they adjust for availability and weather), but it didn't bother us.

Each hotel we stayed at was exactly as described on the website, and by paying an extra 200AED each to get the deluxe deal, it felt absolutely 5-star. Our guide's English wasn't perfect but it was functional and for 3 women alone in Sri Lanka, we felt absolutely safe and comforted having a local guide us through the country.

In summary…

I freakin' love Groupon and have never had a bad experience, but always read the fine print and do your research.

Groupon does extensive research on the businesses they work with, but its better safe than sorry. Read reviews of the specific tourism companies on both the Groupon website and on Google.

I did an international trip to Sri Lanka, and by reading the fine print and communicating with the tourism company directly, we had a once in a lifetime adventure!

A final tip: Use Rakuten!

You should not be using Groupon if you aren't signed up for Rakuten !

By signing up and activating Rakuten when you're using Groupon (or any other horde of websites), you'll automatically get 6% cashback.

For example: if you book a 1000USD trip on Groupon and activate Rakuten before you purchase, you'll receive 6% cashback or 60USD back to you, usually via PayPal.

Like I said, Rakuten gives different amounts of cashback for more than 2000 websites, so it's definitely worth it to sign up.

I LOVE using Groupon for international and local travel! I’ve used it several times and have never been disappointed. Like you said, read the fine print and do additional research and you will be fine. Great post!

Great blog. Glad to broke it down. I always wondered about Groupon.

Love your tips! some super cool ideas 🙂

Great tips here! I’ve seen a few good offers on Groupon but often have specific dates to go in so haven’t been available when they are. I would definitely try this though if I could!

I am a big fan of groupons but I have not done a trip with them. I have considered it a few times but I think in my case its been limited date availability that has prevented it.

I did book a trip though another company and we did have some issues though. The travel company did not put the flights in our names correctly. It was a bit stressful at the airport but it all ended up working fine. That could happen going direct with the company or through a middle man.

I had no idea that Groupon did travel packages! Or that you could get the discount buying with eBates at Groupon. So glad your trip turned out awesome and I’ll have to look into these for the future!

I browse the groupon travel deals (tbh, I browe all travel deals like its the daily news haha) very often. & while I have not yet taken a trip with groupon myself I notice very good deals, but like you said it is so important to read the fine print! & I agree with ebates! I use them for all of my online purchases and I have earned hundreds of dollars in cashback. It is literally the best way to get paid for travel literally!

Wow, I’ve never thought of getting a group on vacation until now. I didn’t even consider it as an option.

This is great! Thanks for the tips!

Love this post! I recently had a friend ask me about trips with Groupon and did not know anything about it! I will now refer her to this post 🙂 #GLTLove

Groupon’s travel deals can seem too good to be true. Can you really get six nights in Hawaii including airfare for under $650? We investigated Groupon Getaways to find out if the deals are worth it—and the important catches you need to watch out for if you book.

Do Groupon Getaways Actually Save You Money?

Four friends traveling around a city, smiling and navigating from a map

No matter what Groupon deal you’re considering, always price check it against the cost of booking it yourself directly. This will help you be sure that the Groupon is really worth it.

To find out if Groupon Getaways actually save you money, we compared three current Groupon travel deals against the cost of booking it on our own. We compared the prices based on two people traveling, as Groupon Getaways generally charges a single supplement fee for solo travelers. Here are the results:

Editor’s Note: All prices were accurate at the time of writing, however, deal costs and fares are likely to change quickly.

4-Night Hawaii Vacation With Hotel and Air

This trip includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to Honolulu, along with four nights in a City Mountain-View room at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alana – Waikiki. The cheapest Groupon option is for dates between March 10 and March 31.

Groupon Price for Two People

Total Price: $1,462.92 / $731.56 per person. The package price is $649 per person and there is a $20.64 daily resort fee.

Cost to Book Directly for Two People

Flights: $568 Total / $284 per person. The cheapest round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu costs $284 for a March 24 departure and March 28 return.

Hotel: $1,342.38. Booking the same City Mountain View room directly through the DoubleTree’s website costs $1,342.38 (including the resort fee).

Total Price: $1,910

In this case, booking through Groupon Getaways saves you a few hundred dollars.

Cofresi Palm Beach Spa Resort

Illustrated graphic showing the comparative cost of booking a trip on Groupon vs booking direct

A Superior Garden-View Room with VIP Amenities at the all-inclusive Cofresi Palm Beach Spa Resort is on a super sale through Groupon. There is a four-night minimum stay on the Groupon deal, and the cheapest rates are found for stays starting April 1. Only one voucher is needed for two guests sharing a room.

Groupon Price

Total Price: $247 for 4 nights.

Total Price: $520.46 for 4 nights.

The same hotel room costs more than double to book directly on Cofresi’s website

However, one of the FAQs on Groupon’s website should throw up a red flag regarding this hotel. “Will I be approached to attend a timeshare sales presentation? Our customers are never obligated to attend a sales presentation. If you are approached and decline a presentation, you will not lose the value of your voucher or have to pay additional fees.”

Be sure to check the reviews carefully (both on Groupon’s website and other sites to determine the quality of the hotel included in the deal.

8-Day Tuscany Vacation with Hotels and Air From Gate 1 Travel

Illustrated graphic showing the comparative cost of booking a trip on Groupon vs booking direct

Since this deal is also available directly from Gate 1 Travel, we compared it against booking it through Gate 1 as well as booking it on our own.

The cheapest package option includes round-trip airfare from New York (JFK) to Milan, an economy manual rental car, 5 nights at the Grand Hotel Plaza & Locanda Maggiore, and 1 night at the Hotel Novotel Milano Malpensa Airport. The $699 price is valid for departures on October 11.

Total Price: $1,398 / $699 per person

Cost to Book With Gate 1 Travel

The price is exactly the same to book via Gate 1 Travel .

Flights: $812 total / $406 per person on Tap Air Portugal.

Hotels: $586 total: $500 Grand Hotel Plaza & Locanda Maggiore + $86 Hotel Novotel Milano Malpensa Airport

Rental car: $194 total

Total Package Price: $1,592

Booking this deal through Groupon or Gate 1 Travel saves you a bit of money compared to booking directly.

The 14 Best Vacation Rental Sites for Travelers

Watch out for the Fine Print

Always read the terms and conditions before booking a Groupon Getaway. You’ll also want to carefully scrutinize what’s included in the deal. Here are a few things to look out for:

  • Single supplements: How much extra will you have to pay if you’re traveling alone?
  • Expiration date of Groupon voucher
  • Age restrictions (many travel deals are for 21 and older)
  • Cancelation policies
  • Additional fees you’ll have to pay at check-in
  • Flight options (including number of stops and departure times)
  • Rental car options (generally the cheapest car type with a manual transmission is included, so you might want to investigate how much an upgrade will cost you.

Should You Book Through Groupon Getaways?

Group of friends chatting and waiting on a train platform with their luggage

Groupon Getaways are undeniably a good deal. However, be warned that Groupon Getaway costs can quickly escalate from the rock-bottom advertised cost. For example, the Tuscany package mentioned above is promoted at $699, but will quickly increase to $849 if you would rather fly out of Miami. Adding the hotel “upgrade” package will be another extra cost. Picking a different departure date can bring the cost up to $1,049 per person. Make sure you pay attention to the extra price as you customize your trip.

Before booking, you should evaluate all of the options included in the deal. Independently research the hotel included in the Groupon Getaway. Is it in a good neighborhood? Does it have good reviews? Is it near the things you want to see and do? What bed types are included in the deal?

Also see if you can find out what flight options are included before committing. Is the flight nonstop or will there be layovers? Is the flight at a convenient time?

Booking a trip through Groupon Getaways can definitely save you money. However, if you would rather have a bit more control over your flight times and hotel choices, Groupon Getaways can also be a great jumping off point to plan your own vacation. For example, if you see a cheap package deal to Tuscany, it likely means that travel to Tuscany is pretty inexpensive during the dates that the Groupon is valid. You could then look up your own flights and hotels for the same time period and find something similarly priced that would give you more flexibility than booking with Groupon. However, if you’d prefer not to have to do all of the trip planning research, and just want someone to take care of all the details, a Groupon Getaway can be a great deal.

Groupon promo codes are case-sensitive, so we recommend copying and pasting to avoid errors. Certain deals are excluded from Groupon promos and will be labelled as such. Some codes are only valid on certain types of category-specific vouchers, as well.

Are coupons stackable at Groupon?

Only one Groupon promo code can be used per order. Most coupons are only valid for single use, as well. Ensure that your Groupon code reduces the price as expected before moving on, as they cannot be applied retroactively.

Can I get a refund on an unused Groupon voucher?

Groupon will issue a refund on an unused voucher within three days of purchase for Local deals. After that, no refund will be issued. However, you can gift it to someone else if you don’t need it. This way, the savings won’t go to waste!

Did you know you can also be a tourist in your own city? The company offers tons of deals on other experiences, such as escape rooms, bowling nights, and theme parks! If you love keeping up with live performances, you can score reduced ticket prices on concerts, shows, or games with GrouponLive.

Register as a current student with the Groupon Select Student Program, and you will get $20 every time you shop for Local deals.

You can use your Groupon student discount savings on restaurants or nightlife near campus. Save on concerts, fitness classes, escape rooms, or even an oil change. Each region is different, so you will find deals specific to where you live or attend school.

Your discounts will automatically be applied at checkout and can be used as many times as you’d like, so be sure to join to save even more!

Join Groupon+

Earn rewards on every purchase with the Groupon Plus program. This free program allows you to earn cash back on purchases made with a linked credit card at any participating local business.

Search for deals that say “Cash Back,” and you will get rewards when you make a purchase at that retailer. Simply click “Claim” on the deal page.

For example, if you redeem your Groupon at a restaurant and then use your registered credit card to purchase the remainder of your meal beyond the Groupon offer value, you will get rewards for every dollar spent!

Get Discounts in the App

Download the free Groupon mobile app to be the first to receive exclusive discounts and inside info on new deals. You can use the app to purchase new offers with a Groupon coupon and redeem existing offers at various retailers.

There is no need to search through your email when you arrive for your discounted pedicure. Just open the app, find the corresponding Groupon certificate, and use it right from your phone!

You can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Either way, it is a convenient method for storing and using your deals.

Purchase Gift Cards

Give the gift of local experiences with a Groupon gift card. These are available as both physical gift cards and as eGift cards. There are several designs available, and they can range in value from $15 to $200. You can even personalize the message of your digital gift card.

A gift card makes a great last-minute gift idea or when you have run out of options. The recipient can purchase whichever event, service, or item appeals to them the most. Plus, you don’t have to guess if they will be feeling more like a comedy club ticket or a spa day. Buy the gift card and let them choose for themself!

If you have a Groupon gift card, you'll need to sign in to your account or create one in order to redeem your gift card and check your gift card balance. You can redeem your gift card for Groupon credits or vouchers.

The Groupon Promise

If you’ve used a local voucher before its expiry, taken a Getaways trip, or attended a live event and were disappointed by your experience, you have fourteen days from your voucher redemption to contact the customer service team to get your situation resolved. You can request a refund, exchange a new Groupon voucher, or receive credits for the paid value with the merchant.

You can contact the team or check the Help Center for more information if you have any other questions or concerns.

Expired Coupon? No Problem!

Rushing to redeem Groupons is a thing of the past! While the promotional value of your voucher may have an expiry, the paid value or most local deals never expire, so you can still use them even past the listed date.

Redeeming your expired Groupon is similar to using an active one: just show your voucher to the merchant, and they should be able to honor it without any issues. If you’ve followed the Fine Print, but the merchant still cannot accept your voucher, contact the Groupon customer service team to find a solution.

Between baggage fees and gas prices, any vacation discount these days is especially welcome. “Social coupon” websites provide fast and easy ways to trim your travel expenses -- if you research carefully. We’ve read the fine print -- here are our picks for solid sites offering deals and rewards on everything from lodging to fun things to do while on vacation. Sites to ... Find and Track Flash Sales Each day, users of sites like Groupon and DailyCandy purchase steeply discounted coupons (“vouchers,” “deals,” etc.) during limited-time “flash sales,” then print or download them for later use directly with the retailer. Get buddies to join you in an Eversave beer tasting, and earn credits toward your next coupon, or savor those suds completely free with LivingSocial . Tracking deals is easy with mobile apps, Facebook, Twitter and email alerts. Sites to ... Snag Affordable Weekend Getaways Looking for an affordable weekend getaway? LivingSocial Escapes offers hand-picked travel packages at discounted rates. Most deals are lodging-based, like a Napa Valley B&B weekend -- but you’ll also find the occasional Alaska fishing or Nepal hiking package. After you purchase a travel package, make sure to tell your friends via a tweet, Facebook post or unique link sent via email. If 3 friends buy the deal using your link, your package is free. (You can pay your friends back in daiquiris during your next St. Lucia girls’ getaway.) In conjunction with travel giant Expedia, Groupon Getaways offers handpicked deals on hotels and resorts – best of all, with a booking guarantee. Yuupon is a travel deal/booking engine hybrid that incorporates TripAdvisor ratings with fewer restrictions than other coupon sites. Photo-filled JetSetter scrutinizes hotels and vacation homes for “personality, style, great service and a sense of place.” TripAlertz believes travel should not be just a transaction, and donates 1% of direct revenue to sustainability efforts. Sites to ... Get Discounts on Day Activities You’ll want to keep yourself occupied while on vacation -- and that takes money. But fret not. Sister site LivingSocial Adventures offers great deals on a wide-range of 1-day activities like kayaking, yoga and mud runs. Try these activities at your destination or even in your hometown. For local deals, check out AmazonLocal , which can save you up to 75% on restaurants, spas and many more entertainment options. AmazonLocal's iPhone app lets you shop for deals on the go. And consider Groupon Now! offerings -- 50%-off vouchers around the US on food, bars and other entertainment options within the next 24 hours. GrouponLive and G-Passes promise entertainment tickets and expedited admission. Refer a friend to sign up for Groupon and earn a $10 credit when they buy their first coupon. Eversave also offers $10 for each referral. Sites to ... Travel in Style Daily Candy seeks “what's new in fashion, food, and fun,” primarily for women. The site offers occasional travel deals and travel-useful products like language CDs and bicycles. Ditto for style savings site Rue La La for golf, luggage, limousines and more. But ... Read the Fine Print Travel industry minutiae can be profuse. Coupon sites try valiantly to simplify things, but a multitude of murky exceptions and blackout dates can apply. So as with any travel booking, read (and reread) the offer carefully. A recent Living Social Tanzania safari package, for example, advertised itself as $3,996 but didn’t include the $430 entrance fees, gratuities and other expenses listed at the bottom of the page. Deals can also sell out at any time, and availability isn’t guaranteed -- if a hotel can sell $300 rooms during a big event, your $100 Groupon room may disappear (though you will be refunded). And it’s often unclear when you become the retailer’s responsibility. Coupon sites complicate things further by claiming “no questions” 30-day return policies on one page, then “case by case basis” on another (as in Eversave’s case). Losing out on a leg waxing is one thing; losing your deluxe cruise cabin is another. Bottomline: Confirm all return policies and whom to call for what. More Fine Print -- and Why the Search Is Worth It! Many users comment (and demonstrate mathematically) that deals aren’t always the vast savings these sites claim -- 50, 60, 70% and more. Also not uncommon is a coupon offer that is no better than a deal found right on the hotel’s own website. It’s difficult to actively search for a deal or property you want, like “Oahu hotel.” Few coupon sites have a search function; you just have to sign up for the alerts and wait. Further, sites might offer hotel rooms “from $99,” yet no matter what combination of dates you enter, all you get back are those from $239. Did they sell out? Am I just picking bad dates? What is the meaning of life? Who knows. But the good news is that all your patience will pay off in savings one way or another -- either through a coupon or your own hard work. And you’ll learn along the way what a real deal is, so you’ll be ready to pounce on it the next time.

Is There a Catch With Groupon?

Groupon is a service that can save you money through the use of virtual coupons. Much like a physical coupon book, you can use Groupon to get deals of up to 70% off of all sorts of things, from food and retail products to travel and services.

When you use Groupon, you can see local deals as well as deals from any location you search for. You can use Groupon on a computer and from a phone or tablet .

How to Get Groupon

Sign up for Groupon through their website at Groupon.com . Groupon is also available on mobile devices. You can get Groupon for iOS or grab the Groupon Android app .

Use your email address to sign up for Groupon or log in with your Facebook or Google account to speed up the sign-up process. If you plan to use Groupon on your phone and computer, log in to both with the same account. For example, if you log in to Groupon with Facebook on your phone, do the same on your computer to access the same account.

What You Can Do With Groupon

Many types of coupons are available with Groupon, and coupons are easy to find on the website and the app.

Coupons are separated into categories like electronics, toys, entertainment, fashion, pet supplies, and more, as well as by companies like Amazon, Hotels.com, Target, Vistaprint, Nike, American Eagle, Walmart, and Shutterfly. Go to any category to see which coupons are available for that category type or from that company.

If you're near a store where Groupon can help you save money, the app notifies you about the deal so that you can get a virtual voucher before you make the purchase. If you're on a computer, Groupon might direct you to the company's coupon page where you can print coupons to take to the store with you.

Another way to find local deals from your phone is to browse the Groupon app from the local section. This way, the only coupons you see are for deals near you. You can filter the results by distance from your location and price.

Groupon also has a Deals of the Day page that updates every 24 hours with fresh, limited-time deals. In addition to the daily deals, getaway deals offer savings on travel expenses when you book through Groupon. You can buy these deals directly from Groupon from your phone or computer.

Other features you get with Groupon include:

  • Email alerts notify you of new coupons from your favorite stores.
  • Groupon Bucks on qualifying purchases to get more discounts in the future.
  • Things To Do to find events near you that are cheaper with Groupon, and filter the results by category (like nightlife, tickets and events, sports and outdoors, and kids' activities) or by price or location.
  • Groupon deals on an interactive map that shows the deals displayed in your city for an easier-to-see selection.
  • Add items to your wishlist to decide later whether to purchase those items.
  • Promote your business on Groupon with Groupon Merchant .
  • Earn cash back at your favorite restaurants with Groupon+ .
  • On occasion, there's an extra 20% off area of the website where you can find more discounts. These deals are usually limited to a few local deals and are only valid seasonally.
  • Groupon Gift Shop is an easy way to find specifically priced gifts for men, women, kids, and babies.
  • Gift cards for use at Groupon.
  • Become a Groupon affiliate partner to earn money by promoting deals.
  • A 30-day money-back guarantee for goods purchased through Groupon.
  • Students get 25% off local deals for six months, and then 15% discounts for as long as they're students.

Groupon's Purchase Options

When you use a coupon code at Groupon, there isn't a purchase you have to make through the Groupon website because all you do is copy the coupon code and use it on the website in question. However, if you buy something through Groupon, there are multiple ways to pay.

If you use Groupon through the iPhone app, there are three ways to pay: with a debit or credit card, PayPal , or Apple Pay . However, with some services you buy through Groupon, the only option you have is Apple Pay. Android users can pay with PayPal or a card.

How Does Groupon Benefit From Deals?

Since Groupon is a middleman service that promotes restaurants and stores, in return from the company they're promoting, they earn a commission each time they successfully refer a customer.

Why Is Groupon So Popular?

Groupon is popular for two reasons. First, Groupon users are modern consumers who love to spend money. They especially love to buy when they get a discount or a perceived bargain. Groupon works because it provides tempting choices for its motivated group of consumers.

Second, Groupon can easily become viral, and its daily discounts spread quickly through email. Groupon subscribers like to forward daily deals to their friends, and in a world of social media and online personal suggestions, an email suggestion carries influence.

Groupon subscribers receive a $10 incentive to refer friends , so it makes sense for users to be motivated to spread the word about Groupon and encourage people to take advantage of the deals.

The only catch is the time-limited nature of the Groupon discounts. With some deals, once a deal is announced and posted on the site, it's relevant for 24 to 72 hours, after which the discount is no longer available.

Coupons, on the other hand, are commonly valid for six to 12 months after you purchase, so there's no rush to redeem the coupon the same day. However, coupons expire at some point, so the coupons you see on Groupon won't be there forever.

Like any form of sales, the provider wants to make it urgent for the customer to purchase, so when you see a Groupon deal that interests you, jump on it within a couple of days.

Groupon Review [2024]: Is It Useful for Finding Travel Deals?

Groupon Review [2024]: Is It Useful for Finding Travel Deals?

Traveling's fun but becomes costly when done often. But travel deal sites like Groupon can help you save while doing what you love. Want to know more? Discover what Groupon has to offer in this review on the deal platform.

groupon travel voucher

You may already know Groupon for its deals on physical goods like clothing, bedding, homeware, and more. But did you know that Groupon can also help you save money while traveling?

You can use Groupon to find deals on accommodation, food, and entry to tourist attractions. In this article, I'll tell you what Groupon is, how it works, and tips for sifting through scams.

Groupon logo in their brand color -green

What is Groupon?

Groupon is an online marketplace that connects local businesses in 13 countries to customers looking for a deal.  Over 1.5 billion Groupon vouchers have been sold  since the company was launched.

You can find all sorts of deals on Groupon, and Groupon offers lots of travel deals that can help save you money. Still, you'll also come across some activities or eateries you may otherwise skip over.

Which Countries Have Groupon?

In 2024, you can buy Groupon vouchers for cities in the following countries:

A sign that says coupons on it

Which Groupon Deals Are Best for Travelers?

As a traveler, you'll be most interested in Groupon vouchers for:

  • Entry to tourist attractions
  • Accommodation
  • Airport Parking
  • Groupon Getaways
  • Transport deals
  • Cool local experiences

Groupon sometimes has offers that include plane tickets, but they aren't always the best deal. If you're still looking at flights for your trip, make sure you're booking the cheapest flights available on the market with  Skyscanner !

Skyscanner helps you find the cheapest flights available so that you wouldn't have to pay more for flight tickets and save that money for more things to do or food to eat!

And if you still need to decide on a destination, check out some  budget travel magazines  for inspiration!

What is Groupon Getaways?

Groupon Getaways is basically what people call a "package holiday." These can take you to Las Vegas in the USA, Iceland, France, Hungary, and many other countries.

Flights, accommodation, and sometimes entry to special events or guided tours are included in the price. You will not always get meals as part of the deal. Read over each Getaway deal's "What you get" section carefully. Every deal is different.

Customers can leave reviews for the Getaways. So be sure you read them, as not all Groupon Getaways receive only praise.

Want to make sure you get the best deal? Then check how much the trip would cost if you booked everything yourself. Groupon Getaways is a great deal in most cases, but sometimes you can create a cheaper trip yourself.

How Does Groupon Work?

Groupon works by connecting businesses with customers. It's the middle-man. On the Groupon website, you'll find thousands of listings. Each tells you which business you deal with at the bottom of the offer's page or in a byline. You usually see a location map for hotels or travel deals.

When you see an exciting offer, you don't buy the service or item straight away. You buy a voucher, which you'll then have to redeem. This can happen in person if the coupon is for a tourist attraction, a restaurant, or online via a merchant's website.

You need to create a Groupon account to buy vouchers. Your account is where your coupons are stored and where you can activate them. You can also add deals to your wishlist for later. All you need is your name, an email address, and a secure password. The website does a great job guiding you through the sign-up process.

How to Use the Groupon App?

The  Groupon mobile app  is an excellent tool on your phone when you're on holiday. Checking local deals while on the go is a great way to find cool places to eat or local experiences not listed in your tourist guide.

You can download the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play or enter your number on the Groupon site. They'll send you a link for the download.

How to Find Groupon Deals Near Me?

Groupon has thousands of listings. You don't want to browse deals that aren't close to your location. Luckily, it's easy to filter deals on Groupon. It would help if you allowed the website or app to access your location. If you want to avoid doing that, manually enter a place in the search bar.

Of course, the search feature also allows you to search for deals in your future destination. If you know you'll spend a weekend in London, you can quickly check out what Groupon has to offer in London.

Features of Groupon

Easy-to-use website and app.

It's easy to browse Groupon's deals, no matter whether you use the website or app. Choose a category from the top, use the search bar to look for something specific, or browse.

It's fantastic that the site works the same in every country, so you don't have to get used to a different layout!

Available in 13 Countries

Groupon's got offers on some fascinating destinations, as mentioned above. Many of them are popular travel destinations with a thriving tourism industry. This means there'll often be tourism-related deals.

Man showing a Groupon Coupon

Multiple Payment Methods

I love PayPal, and so do many other travelers. The good news is that Groupon allows you to pay for vouchers with PayPal, which adds an extra layer of safety on your end. But you can also use all major credit cards and debit cards that work as credit cards to pay.

Email Alerts For New Daily Deals at Your Destination

Say you're planning a trip to London and would love to save some bucks, but there's no deal on Groupon right now. There's still a chance the perfect deal will come. You can set up an email alert if you don't want to check Groupon daily.

You can change the settings for that in your email preferences. Click "add another city," choose London, and you'll get email notifications.

Groupon Bucks For Every Voucher You Buy

Every time you buy a Groupon voucher, you collect Groupon bucks on your account. You can use these towards future purchases on Groupon, also called "Groupon credits."

Interactive Maps

Every Groupon listing comes with a handy interactive map. It shows you where the business is located, and you can even ask the map for directions. Under the map, you'll usually see a link to the business website, so you can check them out before you buy the voucher.

Groupon Gift

Groupon deals can be sent to others as a gift. Instead of checking out as usual, click "Give as a gift." You'll be guided through the following steps so that the gift will arrive at the right place.

Extra Discounts For Students

You can save 9% extra on top of Groupon's deals if you register as a student. You'll need to verify your student status, but that's easy if you have your student ID.

Piles of coupons

The Groupon Promise AKA Money-Back Guarantee

Groupon wants happy customers, so they want to make refunds and cancellations easy. Even if you've already used your voucher, you may still be eligible for a refund. There are exceptions, and deals that aren't eligible for refunds are marked as "non-refundable" in the fine print.

Fine Prints That Are Easy to Understand

I mentioned fine print a few times. Boring stuff, I know. But it's essential to read them. Groupon's fine prints are to the point and contain vital information. I like that you don't have to be a lawyer to understand them!

Cancellation/Refund Policy of Groupon

How to cancel a groupon.

If you want to cancel an unused Groupon voucher, you need to do this:

  • Log in to your account
  • Click on "my stuff"
  • Click on "view details" of the coupon you want to cancel.
  • Cancel the coupon, or contact customer service via web chat.

How Do I Contact Groupon For a Refund?

You can start the refund process without contacting customer service. When logged into your account, you can request a refund by clicking "view details" in your "my stuff" section. If there's no refund button, you can contact customer service via the live chat, as you may still be able to get a refund.

What People Are Saying About Groupon…

People have mixed opinions of Groupon. On review websites, some people rave about great savings, fun getaways, and excellent food.

But some people reported issues with the Groupon booking system. To avoid problems with restaurant or hotel bookings, it's a good idea to double-check with the restaurant or hotel itself to see whether the Groupon booking went through.

Other negative points often mentioned are lousy customer service and that some merchants sell cheap copies of expensive brand names. Fortunately, travel-related listings seem to be less of an issue.

Are There Any Drawbacks of Groupon?

Groupon's a safe site to use. Scams happen very rarely, but that doesn't mean Groupon is perfect. Like every app, Groupon has its downsides, and here are some of them…

  • A good deal can become more expensive if you want to customize it. Traveling solo, changing departure times, or going somewhere during prime time can soon make a deal less attractive.
  • Some vouchers are challenging to redeem. Some places, like restaurants, only allow vouchers to be redeemed during their off-peak hours.
  • Sometimes, you can get things cheaper elsewhere. I found that flights are often more affordable when you use Skyscanner.

Remember these tips, and you will find some incredible deals on Groupon.

Woman is looking at the laptop and smiling

Is Groupon Worth It?

Yes, as long as you realize it's not always perfect!

You can find incredible deals on Groupon if you read the fine print and do your research. I know a couple who arranged their whole holiday via Groupon.

Saving money while traveling  was always a big priority for them. They saved a huge amount on parking fees at their local airport with a Groupon voucher.

It helped that they weren't particularly picky about where to go, so they booked a so-called "Mystery Getaway" via Groupon and were lucky enough to get a week in the Maldives, including flights and accommodation, for a ridiculously low price.

Even if you only use Groupon to save here and there, it's still worth signing up. Saving a few dollars for a nice lunch or saving 50% off the entry for some tourist attractions adds up fast.

My Rating: 3.5/5

  • Great savings
  • Cool discoveries
  • Easy to use
  • Available in 13 countries
  • Invalid for some destinations
  • Some deals aren't worth it
  • Bad Customer service

Groupon.com is a website that offers many discounted local deals across the country. It's free to sign up. Let's say you've purchased a deal through the site. What do you do next? Groupon's system gives you a voucher when you purchase a deal online through the site. In order to get the product or service you've purchased, you need to redeem and use the voucher. This is pretty easy to do.

Signing Up for Groupon

Step 1 Go to the Groupon.com site.

  • To create an account, click “sign up” in the right corner of the screen. You can sign up with your Facebook account login and password or just by typing your information into the screen.
  • You will need to provide your full name, email, and create a password. Once in the Groupon.com site, to purchase a voucher, you will need to add your credit card information.

Step 2 Sign in after you've created an account.

  • Once you are in the site, you can get to your account settings by clicking on your name in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Once you sign up with an active email address, Groupon will routinely email you offers in your area, such as spa coupons, salon specials, restaurant offers, various store offers, trips, and so on. The site uses your zip code to aggregate deals that are in your area.

Finding a Deal

Step 1 Search for a deal on the site.

  • Some categories for deals include food and drink, things to do, beauty and spas, health and fitness, and automotive. Groupon also sells travel packages. Access those by clicking on “getaways” at the top of the screen. The site also has clearance and other goods for sale, also accessible by clicking at the top of the toolbar. [2] X Research source
  • Watch for promo codes that Groupon periodically offers. Sometimes, the site will send these to your email. At other times, you will see a promo code when you log in.

Step 2 Consider checking with the business.

  • You could also check with other online deal sites and with the business directly to make sure you're really getting a good deal. [4] X Research source Remember that Groupons can only be redeemed for the product or service, not for cash.
  • You also might want to search the site carefully to compare competitor deals. That way you can get the deal that's cheapest and/or closest to your hometown.

Step 3 Purchase your deal.

  • For example, sometimes a deal for a beauty treatment will offer one treatment at a certain price, and two treatments at another price. Select which deal you want by clicking on the circle next to the desired option.
  • Read the fine print on the deal before you purchase it! If you still want it, click the green “BUY!” button on the right of the page. Deals are usually only available for a few days. There is a clock under the buy button that tells you how long you have left to get the deal.
  • After you click buy, a page will appear that lets you check over the deal one more time. This is where you enter any promotion or gift code. Choose the credit card you want to use (already in the system). Click on the green “COMPLETE ORDER” button at the bottom of the page. Your voucher will be purchased.

Using the Groupon Voucher

Step 1 Print the voucher if you want to use it right away.

  • Groupon also usually emails you the voucher, and you can print it directly from your email too.
  • All you need to do is present the voucher to the business in question when you go in. Call first if you need to set up an appointment (for, say, a beauty service or restaurant dining).

Step 2 Download the voucher app.

  • Simply download Groupon’s mobile app through the Groupon page. The page asks you to enter a 10-digit U.S. mobile number. Once you do so, the site sends you a download link to your phone for the app. After you install the app and buy a Groupon, go to the menu in the app corner. You will see three dots or a “G.” Select My Groupons.
  • Choose the Groupon in question and then scroll down to see the instructions for using it. When you want to use the Groupon with the business, click the button to download it or show your voucher. [5] X Research source

Step 3 Check the status of vouchers that you’ve purchased.

  • To see your already purchased vouchers, click on your name at the top right screen and then “My Groupons.” The purchased vouchers should appear.
  • To print the voucher, click on “print gift card or voucher” at the right of the specific deal. It will show up under “Deals” when you click on “My Groupons.”
  • The full voucher should appear on your screen, complete with the fine print and the barcode. Simply hit print, and print the voucher.
  • Each voucher will contain a redemption code. Some businesses may accept this redemption code in person even if you don’t have the printed voucher. However, it’s a good idea to bring the printed voucher because some businesses will require it.

Step 4 Read the fine print on your voucher.

  • The fine print on a voucher will generally tell you how and where the voucher is redeemable and will reiterate the specifics of the deal.
  • For some vouchers, especially activities, there will be other rules listed in the fine print. Whatever you purchased, take the time to read it. Gift cards are redeemed the same way.
  • If your voucher has expired, never fear. [6] X Research source You can still usually apply the voucher toward the regular (but not discounted) cost of the goods or services. [7] X Research source

For instant hotel bookings, you'll receive an immediate confirmation, whereas with package vacations, you'll need to get in touch with the travel agent to confirm your dates and additional details (their contact details will be provided).

But how does the pricing compare? Here's an example of the same hotel for the same dates (3 nights, with breakfast) on Groupon Travel versus Booking.com… and Groupon comes out substantially cheaper.

  • Booking.com: US$487 (with my Level 3 Genius discount!)
  • Groupon: US$334
  • Saving: $153 (31.4% cheaper)

Benefits of using Groupon Travel

  • Booking is super simple - just 2 pages. There are less confusing up-sells and cross-sells than you'll find on other major Online Travel Agent websites.
  • Groupon supports major debit and credit cards for easy payment, as well as Google Pay and Paypal. Klarna is also available for buy now, pay later.
  • Receive daily email alerts for deals for your preferred destination (in your email alert, click the "add another city" link).
  • Earn Groupon Bucks with each purchase - credits that can be used towards future purchases and trips.
  • Groupon Guarantee : Groupon offers a money-back guarantee for peace of mind if you're unable to book your trip due to issues with the deal or the travel provider.

groupon travel voucher

  • If you travel solo or add optional extras to your trip, the cost can increase substantially.
  • Hotel and flight availability can be limited, especially around peak travel periods. If your preferred dates are not available, you are likely eligible for a refund (but read the fine print before purchasing).
  • Check the expiry date of the Groupon voucher.
  • Some hotels have hidden fees (such as taxes and resort fees), however these should be itemised on the Groupon listing, so read the fine print (again).
  • Some super cheap hotel deals on Groupon involve a timeshare sales pitch, but these are never obligatory, and if you decline, you won't lose your voucher or have to pay additional fees.
  • Flight deals may only be valid from specific cities. So, check the cost of flying from your nearest regional airport to the departure point of the deal (eg. Austin to New York).
  • Read reviews on Groupon from other customers who have made the same trip and look for any potential red flags.

groupon travel voucher

Based in Chicago, Groupon was launched by Andrew Mason in November 2008 and gradually expanded to more cities reaching 150 cities in North America within 2 years. Groupon went public in June 2011, and today operates in 13 countries.

Is Groupon Travel Right For You?

Groupon Travel works well for first-time international travellers who want someone else to do most of the hard work organising the trip. Or if you're a deal hunter with limited time on your hands, Groupon Travel can get you from zero to confirmed booking in a matter of minutes.

Experienced travelers will appreciate the inspiration that Groupon provides. If you're seeing a destination like Puerto Rico with cheap package deals, it may mean travel to Puerto Rico is cheaper during the dates the Groupon deal is valid. Chances are you can find great deals with a little more flexibility if you research direct options. But if the dates and inclusions look good to you, why not just book via Groupon and save the headache?

Pro Tips For Groupon Travel

Here are some tips for using Groupon for travel discounts:

  • Download the free Groupon mobile app to search for travel deals anywhere, anytime.
  • Read the terms and conditions carefully before booking a Groupon Travel deal.
  • Carefully examine what's included (and not included) in the deal.

  • Be aware of single supplements, such as how much extra you'll have to pay if you're traveling alone.
  • Most hotels on Groupon Travel are of decent quality, but some subpar ones can slip through. So search Google and TripAdvisor for reviews and feedback.
  • If your international package deal includes car rental, bring a map or GPS and understand the driving conditions of that country.
  • Some promos are specific to a type of deal, such as restaurants, beauty/spa, or travel.
  • On the checkout page, select Promo or Gift Code.
  • Enter the promo code and select "Apply".
  • Check that your discount is reflected in your order total.
  • Note that promo codes do not apply to taxes, shipping, or other fees.
  • Save money on flights, hotels, tours & transport.
  • Wide range of destinations and travel packages available.
  • Comprehensive info provided about each hotel or travel deal.
  • Reviews from other customers can help set your expectations and reduce risk.
  • Check the terms of each deal carefully to make sure you get what you expect.
  • Add-ons to trips can increase the price considerably, so be careful.

The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
