‘Just Like Those Early Days’: Where to Get Tickets to John Mayer’s ‘Solo Acoustic Tour’

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

John Mayer is getting back to the basics for his upcoming Solo Tour 2023 . With tickets now on sale, the 19-date run of springtime concerts will kick off at New Jersey’s Prudential Center in March, with dates scheduled at New York City’s Madison Square Garden before wrapping up at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Buy John Mayer Tickets at Vivid Seats

Shortly after the songwriter’s announcement, he followed it up with another update, writing on his Instagram that he was “blown away and moved by the response to this tour announcement. I guess the wait was worth it for all of us. This is going to be very special.”

Mayer later went on to share that “three of [his] favorite singer/songwriters around,” including JP Saxe, Joy Oladokun, and Alec Benjamin would join him on the upcoming run of solo shows. Though previously announced as an opening act, Lizzy McAlpine “won’t be able to make the run with us this time” because of a schedule conflict, Mayer noted in his post.

“LETS GOOOOOOOO,” Benjamin commented, with Oladokun writing “I can’t believe this is real hahaah. See ya soon!”

“See you soon. I’ve got some dream setlist writing to do…,” Mayer shared on Twitter when announcing his tour. More than two decades since Mayer’s major-label debut, Room for Squares , the Solo Tour marks the Grammy winner’s first headlining set of shows since dropping his last full-length project, 2021’s Sob Rock . (He’ll also embark on the Final Tour with Dead and Company this summer.)

Though the upcoming concert dates don’t exclusively support Sob Rock , it seems likely Mayer will play through at least a couple of the songs from the album during his Solo tour sets, from “New Light” to acoustic gems like “I Guess I Just Feel Like.”

It was his birthday and his band played Happy Birthday To You for him after the first song, Belief!

After the intermission, he covered Tougher Than The Rest by Bruce Springsteen, saying that it was one of his favourite songs of all time.

It was a good setlist: he played some songs that he doesn't usually play, like Waitin' On The Day, Born And Raised or In Your Atmosphere.

Before playing Changing, he said that to finish the song he thought about Irish people in a pub singing it together, and that every time he sings it he thinks about Ireland.

He and all the band were really great.

WHAT A MAGICAL EVENING OF PURE MUSIC & ART!

The Viejas Arena at the SDSU campus is simply a fabuous venue- and on a perfect cool night in San Diego, the sold out show was an artistic masterpiece- the setlists were spot on. The artsy colorful 3D Backdrop, that I believe Mayer himself was a key designer in its creation, blended beautifully with the video montages displayed above it.

Speaking of the video special effects- subtle, colorful, real-time gems, shadow effects in a stacatto pattern of the guitar neck, I've never seen anything like it in 40 years of concert outings. The crowd was captivated- a long 30 minute intermission appeared relatively early in the show.

I've been going to John Mayer shows since 2002 and though I am obviously a biased super-fan, I can honestly state that this production is-- far and away-- much more amazing than what I saw at the Forum just two years ago.

JM is continuously expanding horizons, getting more creative-- and has the crowd in stitches laughing when he chats up his latest insights & specific San Diego references... I just wish I had the whole show on video so I could watch it again and catch every little thing I missed!

My Husband and I were blown away at the complete show. John is a master of master's at playing the guitar. I still can't get over how amazing it was to watch him get into playing and what we heard. It made so much of a great difference seeing him in person play. His band is extremely talented with the gifts they brought to the stage too. This year we've seen 4 concerts so far and John Mayer was the best! I hope he continues to perform for many years because we'll see him every time if he comes to Phoenix or Tucson (where we live). John spoke to the crowd and made us laugh during the show. They even dropped confetti on the main floor during their encore - it was so cool!! No other band this year we saw live did as much for the crowd entertainment as John Mayer.

John Mayer concert review, setlist and photos from his solo tour debut in NJ

is john mayer on tour right now

John Mayer has been working towards this show for a long time.

“There’s no tour in my entire life I’ve thought about more than this one,” Mayer told the sold-out crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday night. It was the opening engagement of Mayer’s solo and mostly acoustic arena tour, and the seven-time Grammy winner was laying it all on the line.

The results were nothing less than breathtaking, two hours of raw, peerless wonder.

Mayer made a habit of showing audiences different versions of himself from over the years, starting with the radio-dominating pop wonder initially introduced to the world with the “No Such Thing” success of two decades ago.

He became a soulful rocker in the “Continuum” days. The John Mayer Trio showcases his undeniable skill as an incendiary guitarist. He spent years as a back-to-the-land troubadour, and, for nearly a decade, he’s stunned as a Jerry Garcia successor in the Grateful Dead legacy act Dead & Company. In 2021, he delivered the wonderful curveball “Sob Rock,” a work of yacht rock revivalism that displayed a disarming amount of wit, vulnerability and self-awareness.

Fans can be forgiven for wondering: So, who is John Mayer?

On Saturday night, it was clear that he’s all of the above, and then some.

Heading into the Prudential Center, the audience knew precious little, beyond the fact that Mayer, following an opening set by JP Saxe, would be alone on stage.

“I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone,” Mayer wrote in an Instagram post announcing the tour in January. “A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I’d feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days. It took a couple of decades, but I feel it now."

As for the setlist?

“I’ll be playing old songs. Newer songs. Songs you haven’t heard that I’ll be road testing — all on acoustic, electric and piano,” Mayer teased.

That utilitarian description belies the impact of Mayer, alone on stage, leading a sea of the devoted through a retrospective sing-along across his career to date.

Everything was in play, and what’s remarkable is how, at this point, so much of Mayer’s repertoire is in conversation with itself.

“Neon,” a guitar showcase that’s been a persistent concert highlight since its introduction on his 2001 debut LP “Room for Squares,” was as hypnotic as ever – but 20-plus years later, it’s grown warmly shaggy, with a pleasantly weathered patina that invokes his near-decade spent in the land of the Dead.

Much later in the night, he used a gorgeous double-neck Martin guitar to traverse through the Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” and made it sound, in the best possible way, like a John Mayer song.

Mayer noted on stage that when he first announced this run of solo dates, fans in the comments section of his social media channels quickly began clamoring for deep cuts. He certainly obliged. “Home Life,” a “Heavier Things” (2003) highlight not played live since 2005, retuned to the stage for the first time in 18 years.

“Home Life” is a song that clearly means a lot to Mayer; he has a tattoo for it on his arm, and he prefaced its most powerful verse – “I can tell you this much, I will marry just once, and if it doesn't work out, give her half of my stuff” – by telling the audience, “These words still ring true.”

The “marry just once” passage of “Home Life” echoed a poignant passage in the “Sob Rock” ballad “Shouldn’t Matter But it Does,” played early in the night: “It could have been always, it could have been me, we could have been busy naming baby number three.” It was particularly striking when juxtaposed with “Driftin',” a new song debuted on Saturday night: “Put my leather jacket on to play the part of ‘Bad Boy John,’ the brokenhearted vagabond who wandered into town.”

A consummate crowd-pleaser, Mayer followed “Home Life” with his biggest hit of the night, the 2001 bedroom eyes serenade “Your Body is a Wonderland." He did so in self-effacing fashion, telling the Newark crowd “I have a thing for stupid (and) sincere,” comedically wincing at the song’s “bubblegum tongue” lyric and telling the audience afterwards, “It’s a balancing act.”

Saturday’s show was a surveying job with Mayer, now 45, taking stock of his life and career so far. Using six-string, 12-string, electric, double-neck and resonator guitars, as well as piano and harmonica, Mayer guided the audience through a meditation on how far he (and they) have traveled over the years, and also glanced towards the future.

Following the Newark debut, the tour plays Madison Square Garden in New York City on Wednesday, March 15. The 19-date schedule ends Friday, April 14, at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Mayer will be back in our area for Dead and Company’s farewell tour this summer. The band plays Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Thursday, June 15, and Citi Field in New York City on Wednesday, June 21, and Thursday, June 22.

Why You Don't Hear Much From John Mayer Anymore

is john mayer on tour right now

John Mayer broke into the pop music scene with "No Such Thing" in 2002. With his smooth voice, impressive guitar work, and good looks, it wasn't long before he solidified his position as a giant figure in the industry. Since then, he's had a string of hits on the Billboard Hot 100 , including "Say,"   "Daughters,"  and  "Waiting on the World to Change."  And while the musician's still releasing records and selling out arenas, he's been pretty quiet lately. Let's answer the question on everyone's minds: Why don't we hear much from Mayer anymore?

His personal life became tabloid fodder

Mayer may have gained respect and adoration early on in his career as a serious musician/charming boy next door hybrid, but it wasn't long until his personal life began to overshadow his professional endeavors. As the "Still Feel Like Your Man" singer's relationship drama with A-list celebs like Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift , and Katy Perry  became more publicized, he became an increasingly controversial figure in the tabloids.

The attention undoubtedly tarnished Mayer's public persona and obscured his musical output. "It's not ideal," the "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" singer told CBS News  in 2013. "I wish I was only as well known as I was exposed musically. I really do."

His disastrous PR ticked off a lot of people

Mayer infamously came under fire for a cringe-worthy pair of interviews in 2010. Following a string of outlandish remarks, the "Bigger Than My Body" singer came off looking like an egotistical, racially insensitive, womanizing — well, jerk . Needless to say, he ticked off a lot of people .

In January of that year, he humiliated ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson when he called her "sexual napalm" and shared risqué details about their relationship with  Playboy  (via  E! News ). In the same interview, he dissed Aniston, said the N-word, and stated, "My d**k is sort of like a white supremacist." Yikes.

Mayer unfortunately failed to learn his lesson after sparking outrage the first time around, and got even more crass about his sex life during his  Rolling Stone  interview that June. "All I want to do now is f**k the girls I've already f**ked, because I can't fathom explaining myself to somebody who can't believe I'd be interested in them," he told the magazine. "I'm too freaked out to meet anybody else." During this interview, the guitarist went on to share TMI details about his masturbation, porn, and bathroom habits, and even coined the phrase, "the Joshua Tree of vaginas." Wow.

He withdrew from public life

While grappling with the fallout of his disastrous interviews, Mayer hid away from the spotlight for two years to do some soul searching on a ranch in Montana.

"I had nothing to say — I was going through a time in my life where I didn't really want to share what was going on, but I didn't want to be boring," the "Shadow Days" singer told NPR  when he resurfaced in 2012 to promote his comeback album  Born and Raised  (via People ). Calling the interviews a "complete miscalculation," Mayer added, "I wasn't prepared to be honest, but I knew that I had to be open. When you're just open but not honest, then you start free-associating garbage."

"I was just a jerk. And it's hard for people to process that," the  "Why Georgia"  singer later admitted to  CBS News , explaining that a lack of maturity attributed to his off-putting behavior. "I wish that I grew up a year every year of my life, and I didn't....I was 24 for six years."

During his 2017 profile with  The New York Times , Mayer candidly reflected, "What has to happen for a guy to believe that he's totally well-adjusted and be that far out of touch? My GPS was shattered, just shattered."

He suffered from severe vocal problems

Mayer extended his hiatus from public life after he developed a granuloma on his vocal chords in 2011. His harrowing journey to recovery included multiple surgeries, several months of strict dieting and vocal rest, and having his vocal chords paralyzed via Botox injections. The "Who Says"  hit-maker's severe vocal problems not only delayed the release of  Born and Raised  and resulted in a canceled tour, but also jeopardized the future of his career.

"There was not a lot of hope. They said cancer would have been easier to get rid of," Mayer told Rolling Stone in 2013. "Everything changed about my voice. I don't have the projection.... I've found new ways around everything — new ways to talk, new ways to laugh. Now I wonder if I can go right back to the shape of my voice that I had when I was singing once I can do what I want to do with it."

Dead & Company became his priority

Mayer joined forces with former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Billy Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart, as well as Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti, to form the band Dead & Company  in 2015. According to  Billboard , this passion project grew out of Mayer's discovery of the Grateful Dead during his hiatus. His chemistry with Weir and Hart was undeniable when the trio met and later jammed together, so they formed the group and  went on tour  — which effectively sidelined the "Born and Raised" singer's solo career.

"I have to put a record out because it's almost finished; I have to express myself in that way," Mayer told Bozeman Magazine  in 2016. "Part of Dead & Company's power comes from this being an answer to the normal work that I do."

He's not in a rush to release music

With an estimated  net worth of $40 million , Mayer doesn't necessarily need to crank out music for financial stability or relevance anymore. As evidenced by Forbes   in 2017, the guitarist had no problem filling 17,000 seats at the L.A. Forum without the support of a new hit song.

At that point in his career, Mayer had just released the follow-up to 2013's Paradise Valley , an understated turn to country-folk that was  well-received , but not as commercially successful as his previous output. Still, the  "Something Like Olivia"  singer remained confident about his career trajectory, telling the sold-out arena, "[Thank you for] giving me the freedom to make music that doesn't compete with anybody."

As Mayer later told  USA Today , his new output, The Search for Everything , actually "began with this idea of, 'I don't need to put out another [record] and I'm not going to until it proved the reason for its existence.' It had to transcend anything I had done before."

The Search for Everything was stuck in the past

As mentioned, Mayer finally released his first full-length album in four years, The Search for Everything , in 2017. While the effort peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and marked a return to the guitarist's penchant for pop-rock, it received mixed reviews .

Most scathing of all came from Pitchfork . The publication gave the "Love on the Weekend" singer's record a 4.9 out of 10, and called Mayer out for dredging up everything from his notorious serial dater behavior to those infamous 2010 interviews. "[It's] a deliberate tour of contrition — his second," the critic wrote. "It's a remarkable demonstration of Mayer's fundamental problem: suffering simultaneously from an excess of taste and an oblivious lack of it." Ouch.

However, Mayer was happy with his output and couldn't wait to hit the road, telling  USA Today , "The tour is like a victory lap after two and a half years of working on a record that is the deepest dive I've ever taken as an artist."

He's focusing on staying sober

Mayer reached a major milestone in his life in September 2017 — one year of sobriety. "One year ago today, I decided to give drinking a break. A very personal thing for everyone. For me, a constant return on investment," he  tweeted  at the time,  adding , "I post this because I want people to know that 'that's enough for now' is on the menu, so to speak."

Earlier that year, the  "Gravity"  singer spoke candidly about his resolve to stay sober, telling  The New York Times  that he went to therapy to work through his "attachment style" and dependence on alcohol.

"Drinking is a f***ing con. How much is enough?" the "Queen of California" singer later rhetorically asked Rolling Stone . "Every time I drank, I was looking for some sort of regulated amount. It always feels wrong for me. I always feel like I went overboard." Although he explained that he "never had a serious issue" with drinking, Mayer admitted, "There's never an amount that felt like I was succeeding at life. It always felt wrong." He later added, "I put [smoking weed] where drinking used to go, and the quality of life has gone up considerably."

He needed emergency surgery

Dead & Company's 2017 tour was brought to an abrupt halt in early December, when Mayer was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans, LA for an emergency appendectomy, forcing the band to  postpone their last stops .

The following day, the  "Half of My Heart" singer gave concerned fans  a health update  on social media. "Thank you everyone for the well wishes. Had surgery yesterday and woke up to see some amazingly kind and loving tweets," he  tweeted . "I'm so sorry that we couldn't finish out the last few dates of the tour. This band and these shows mean the world to me. Love you all dearly."

Mayer later took to Instagram to say he was recovering from his health scare back home in Montana. "Home," he captioned a snapshot of himself standing outside in the snow. "See you in a bit. ♥️."

He's ready to settle down

Mayer may be known as a notorious bachelor due to his string of high-profile relationships, but the guitarist has admitted that he finally feels ready to settle down and start a family.

"I'm ready to roll, I'm more mature than I've ever been," the "XO" singer told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in 2016 (via Page Six ). "The stage is set but I'm excited for a meet cute at some point. I'm single and I'm excited about the future."

The following year, Mayer revealed that he yearned for the stability of a home. "I wish there was somebody to throw me the 40th," Mayer told The New York Times . "I want the baby with the protective earphones [by the side of the stage]. I want to say, 'We'll take it,'" he continued, adding, "I'm right on time for my career, and I'm running late for my life."

He doesn't care about fame

Any John Mayer fan who's concerned with their fave's lacking star power these days might take solace in the fact that the  "Free Fallin'"  singer isn't too bothered by his dwindling fame. "[I'm] transition[ing] into writing stuff that's deeper for me on a musical, artistic level... at the expense of being popular," he told  USA Today . "The pot of gold at the end of the whole thing was being able to go around the world and play these songs as a happy, well-situated, excited, inspired guy."

As the seven-time Grammy winner explained to  NPR , it really is all about the music. "The extracurricular stuff is fun — like Dave Chapelle says he likes fame, he just doesn't really trust it. I think that's the most honest way," Mayer said. "I like it, I just don't trust it anymore. I want it if it's related to music. I realized that it doesn't fit me to be any bigger than the music is. It doesn't fit."

Meyer Sound PANTHER Gets Personal on John Mayer Solo Acoustic Tour

The PANTHER system reacts accurately to subtle mix changes, especially in this stripped-down environment. With just a voice and guitar it’s critical that the PA does not influence tonality. The PANTHER system only puts out what you put into it!”

Gifted with an emotive voice and extraordinary guitar skills, and drawing on a deep repertoire of chart-topping songs, John Mayer is one of the rare artists able to fill “A level” arenas as a true solo act. The rousing success of his recently concluded Solo Acoustic Tour relied on an intimate connection with his audience, accomplished aurally via a reinforcement system of Meyer Sound PANTHER large-format linear line array loudspeakers provided by UltraSound.

The spring leg of the tour kicked off on March 11 at New Jersey’s Prudential Center and wrapped at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum before Mayer embarked on a summer tour with Dead & Company — also supported by a PANTHER-based system from UltraSound. The fall leg was another east-to-west marathon, launching at Madison Square Garden with the November finale again at the Kia Forum. The FOH engineer for both the solo legs and the triumphant final tour by Dead & Company was Derek Featherstone, who also wears the hat of UltraSound CEO.

According to Featherstone, mixing one voice accompanied by guitar or piano is not the simple chore it might seem. “With one vocal and one instrument, there is nothing for the artist or engineer to hide behind,” he points out. “The mix is either right or wrong. The detail in compression and effects is plainly audible so you have to mix with greater accuracy.”

Accordingly, he continues, the touring rig kept him on his toes. “The PANTHER system reacts accurately to subtle mix changes, especially in this stripped-down environment. With just a voice and guitar it’s critical that the PA does not influence tonality. The PANTHER system only puts out what you put into it!”

Although the exact system configuration varied with particular arenas, a typical deployment would be anchored by front left and right arrays of 18-each PANTHER loudspeakers with side hangs of the same length as well as, when needed, extreme side hangs for 220-degree coverage consisting of 20 LEOPARD line array loudspeakers per side. In most scenarios, three short delays of LYON line array loudspeakers were added for balance and intimacy in the far upper seats. Dual hangs of six each 700-HP subwoofers filled out the deep bass notes.

For performance capture and mix processing, the front end of the system offered both analog purity and digital flexibility, with a vintage Gamble EX68 analog console paired with an Avid S6L digital mixer. “We also made a conscious decision not to use any wireless mics, wireless guitar feeds, or in-ear monitors. That’s part of the reason for the Gamble, as there is something rewarding to having a mic or instrument on a cable going into an analog desk. For vocal inserts, we leaned on the Summit DCL hybrid tube compressors and Empirical Labs Distressors.”

With no band bleed to worry about, Featherstone selected the Neumann KMS105 supercardioid condenser for Mayer’s vocals. “With no band behind him, we could use a condenser just like we would do in a studio since we don’t have to sacrifice any sonic reproduction to navigate around background bleed.”

After meticulous care in analog capture and sound shaping, Featherstone relied on the latest advancements in digital networking to deliver the signal with undiminished purity to the individual line array loudspeakers. “We are using the Milan AVB network to run digital all the way to each PANTHER cabinet,” he notes. “We feel like the AVB network does add some clarity in the 4kHz and higher regions.”

Eight MJF‑210 stage monitors were deployed for foldback, with three each at the two guitar performance positions, and two at the piano position. “The guitar positions are set up so the center wedge is vocal and the side wedges are guitar in stereo,” says Featherstone. “This keeps the three wedges from fighting each other.”

Rounding out the sound crew for the tour were System Engineer Michal Kacunel, Monitor Engineer Ian Dubois, Monitor Tech Alex Pritchard, and PA Techs Sean McAdam, Riley Gajewski, and Erik Swanson.

John Mayer’s Solo Acoustic Tour resumes in late winter of 2024 in the UK and Europe, with most of the same UltraSound crew and front-end gear flying over and joining up with a similar PANTHER system from a Meyer Sound rental partner.

A typical setlist on the fall tour leg covered about 20 of Mayer’s own compositions plus a couple of covers. Most accompaniment was on standard acoustic guitar, with two songs backed by piano and a few more using a double-necked acoustic with some looping effects. The opening act for the fall leg was JP Saxe.

John Mayer

2023 is off to a strong start for John Mayer fans. The guitar pro announced a solo acoustic arena tour on Thursday (Jan. 26), featuring 19 stops across North America this spring.

“I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone,” he shared. “A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I’d feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days.”

It was unclear what was to come for the artist after Mayer announced his departure from Columbia Records after 21 years in March 2022. The only thing that was clear was that John wasn’t calling it quits, sharing at the time that “I love music more than ever, and I believe some of my best work still lies ahead.”

This run of shows marks Mayer’s first solo endeavor since the departure, with attendees having “acoustic, electric and piano” picks both new and old to look forward to on the special tour.

While he can rip up an electric solo like no other, some of his best lyricism and guitar work shine on his acoustic tracks. This was made abundantly clear during several stops of the 2022 Sob Rock tour, when Mayer pivoted to an acoustic-heavy format after several of his band members tested positive for COVID-19.

Could those set of shows have been the inspiration for this stripped-down trek? Of the 20-plus years of songs in his catalog, here are 24-ish songs we hope to hear on the solo tour, with a focus on the acoustic and piano favorites.

“Still Feel Like Your Man”

The hotel lobby piano vibe that opens 2017’s The Search For Everything sets you up for a good time. As the crowd anxiously awaits Mayer, this high energy intro would be great to kick off the show.

“Dreaming With a Broken Heart”

If piano songs are an integral part of this tour, “Dreaming With a Broken Heart” is a no-brainer.

“Stop This Train”

A solid combination of acoustic guitar and piano, there’s no song more fitting for an acoustic tour setlist than 2006’s “Stop This Train.”

“Why Georgia”

Off his debut album Room For Squares, “Why Georgia” is a solid acoustic jam. Bonus points if he keeps the high-pitch vocal in the pre-chorus.

"In Your Atmosphere"

Spoiler alert: John made it to L.A. In fact, Mayer is ending the 19-show run at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles despite repeatedly crooning “I don’t think I’m gonna go to L.A. anymore” on “In Your Atmosphere.” Big miss if it’s not played there!

A stripped-down version of “Neon” would showcase how intricate the 2001 song actually is on the guitar.

"The Heart of Life"

The overall themes of Mayer’s solo tour announcement appear to be reflection and moving forward. Embarking on this new career journey, it seems lyrics like, “No it won’t all go the way it should, but I know the heart of life is good” still ring true.

“Free Fallin’”

This format lends itself nicely to riffing on covers. Mayer’s version of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” is a recurring acoustic treat in his sets.

A mainstay on his setlists, it may be a little cheesy when he swaps out one of the cities in the chorus for wherever he’s playing, but it is vital to the live experience of the song.

"Born and Raised"

If we’re talking solo Mayer, we’d be remiss to exclude “Born and Raised,” the title track off his 2012 set. His guitar and harmonica do the heavy lifting on this song, making the vocals the final piece that completes the puzzle.

"Wildfire” feat. Frank Ocean

Hey, the title of this article is dream setlist! The piano-heavy track fits seamlessly into the theme of this tour, and with Frank gearing up for a big Coachella headlining set in April, who says he wouldn’t warm up for the festival stage by being a special guest at a stop on John’s tour to perform the 2013 collab?

"Theme From ‘The Search For Everything’"

Time for a little break. Enter “Theme From ‘The Search For Everything.'” Could it be an interlude? A segue? A little bit of the intro would enhance the set.

“I Will Be Found (Lost At Sea)”

Many believe the track to be a standout from 2013’s Paradise Valley , but it seems Mayer may not agree. He once said “I wish I nailed it” of the piano-heavy song. This tour is an excellent opportunity to do so.

"The Age of Worry”

The momentous percussion that comes in at 0:14 might make the song, but how moving would it be to see John solo on a bar stool belting this one?

“Love Is a Verb”

A rarity in JM sets, 2012’s “Love Is a Verb” would be a great choice to bust out solo.

“Emoji of a Wave”

Another song often passed over in his live sets. “It breaks my heart….” All John needs is his guitar and a bar stool for this gorgeous song, just like the promotional poster intends.

"Shouldn’t Matter But It Does" / "I Guess I Just Feel Like"

These two Sob Rock tracks lend themselves best to this format. They stuck out on the album stylistically and could foreshadow what’s still to come.

This tour seems like a great opportunity for covers both new and old. If not this excellent Beyoncé pick, Mayer could feel inclined to surprise and delight the audience with a new cover in the mix – perhaps even a newer Bey track, like “Cuff It.”

"Dear Marie”

John Mayer recently put years-old theories to rest about who “Your Body Is a Wonderland” is about, revealing the saccharine song is about his high school girlfriend, Marie. With a spotlight on his past loves yet again, now would be a cheeky time to break out this Paradise Valley jam.

"No Such Thing" / "Daughters"

Clearly, Mayer has a wide catalog to choose from, but let’s not forget some of his biggest commercial successes. Whether it’s his debut single “No Such Thing” or the often-misinterpreted “Daughters,” he’s got to save a slot for one or two of the chart hits.

"You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me”

If Mayer is doing a mostly acoustic and piano set, we expect and want to cry at least once. This one will do the trick.

An Unreleased Song

If John is announcing this tour with the promise of songs that he’ll “be road testing,” we deserve a taste of at least two or three over the course of this tour. Another pass at his tribute to late comedian Bob Saget, which he teased at Alice in Winterland in late 2022? Or perhaps other musings of things he’s trying, melodies he has stuck in his head? As he embarks on this next stage of his career, sans record deal for the first time in more than 20 years, it would be amazing for him to give fans a glimpse into his mind as he works out the creation of a new song.

"Edge of Desire" / "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room"

These two fan-favorites are a must for any John Mayer tour – full stop.

“Last Train Home”

After hypnotizing the crowd with one (or both) of the songs above, we can see him exiting the stage to return for an encore with Sob Rock standout “Last Train Home” to bring us back to present day — and send us on our way.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a year of musical adventure than by closing out 2023 with a run of New Year’s shows at the world famous Blue Note in Tokyo, Japan. It’s been a dream of mine… pic.twitter.com/Jc9yNPdVhM — John Mayer (@JohnMayer) October 12, 2023

The 45-year-old's solo arena tour, which kicked off in March this year and has taken him to cities across North America and Europe, is described as a return to the 'Gravity' act's earlier days, during which he performed with "only a guitar and a microphone". It features a mix of old and new numbers as well as never-before-heard tracks presented on the electric and acoustic guitars and the piano.

Tickets to Mayer's three shows at Blue Note Tokyo, priced from JPY 44,000 , will be available during a pre-sale on Blue Note Tokyo's official website from 12 PM local time on 7 November . The general sale will commence at 12 PM local time on 14 November .
