Annual conference focuses on shifting the future of Hawaiʻi tourism

hawaii tourism authority conference 2022

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority is looking ahead.

Sessions at last week's Hawaiʻi Tourism Conference included Native Hawaiian cultural workshops and discussions, and updates on important tourism markets.

But the main focus was changing state tourism for the future.

"I have seen, you know, managing local residents and out-of-state visitors in our natural and cultural landscapes has pretty much been sloppy, without any real indicative plan of outcome," said Curt Cottrell, administrator of the Parks Division at the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources.

"For the past 100 years, Hawaiʻi tourism evolved and was promoted organically — meaning we just started putting it together, trial and error. And resources and communities bore the brunt," Cottrell said. "Something that I've seen in my 31 years at DLNR is, and in Hawaiʻi in general, we just give our natural and cultural resources away to the visitor industry."

In an effort to reverse the negative impacts of tourism, the HTA has promoted regenerative tourism in recent years. Under regenerative tourism, visitors and the industry help to leave a destination better than it was before.

Concepts such as "voluntourism" and visitor fees for attractions have been associated with regenerative tourism.

"We've been like a cheap all-you-can-eat buffet, and now we're learning to revalue our resources. So maybe less tables, you need reservations," Cottrell said. "Visitors haven't even blinked at the new rates. Diamond Head used to be $1 to walk in, $5 to drive in. Amazingly low."

Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi surveyed visitor willingness to pay extra for expanding local agriculture, efforts to preserve natural resources, and supporting cultural initiatives.

"Almost 80% [of surveyed visitors] said they'd be willing to do this and pay," said Jerry Agrusa, professor at UH Mānoa's Travel Industry Management school.

One presentation discussed how regenerative tourism is not a new concept. Examples include the recently installed reservation systems at several state parks.

Another option is business commitments to community partnerships and education efforts.

"We have to make sure that our relationships are reciprocal," said Taylor Ledgerwood, assistant director of the Kahala Hotel's Initiative for Sustainability, Culture and Arts .

"Our kuleana is to give back to our community, to give back to our natural resources. And as an industry, we can't just rely on these nonprofits to do the work for us without being consistent and being reliable. And these organizations are constantly looking for funding for support, and they want to share their efforts."

In order for regenerative tourism to work, panelists emphasized the importance of community partnerships and support. However, these partnerships can be difficult to form.

Kailua Beach Adventures is one of a handful of local businesses that joined a new partnership program to educate visitors to be responsible guests and stewards of native ecosystems. The Pledge to Our Keiki Partnership Program aims to get business involvement in promoting local culture and sustainability.

But Alika Garcia of Kuleana Coral implored industry professionals to work with the community and build these partnerships.

"There's opportunity to be the lead of this new economic vision, and that it will have financial benefit to you. If that's an incentive to come up with solutions and find partners," Garcia said. "I think there's a lot out there, and there's a lot of community-based groups that have generational knowledge of their area. Seek them out in wherever you work, and find ways to partner.

"They might not want to work with you or trust you, and you might not want to work with them or trust them. But those relationships are there, you just have to make it and I think you're going to find that it's going to benefit everybody in the future," Garcia added.

Zoom conference focuses on regenerative tourism

LIHU‘E — The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority is supporting the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association’s Ka Huina 2022 Conference to discuss the path toward a regenerative tourism future for Hawai‘i.

The Zoom conference is today and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

It is free and advance registration is required. The Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association website, nahha.com/kahuina, is where registration can be accomplished

In the middle of the vast Moananuiakea, Hawai‘i lies at the crossroads of a rapidly changing world — the intersection of heaven and earth, of east and west, of tradition and innovation.

The global pandemic of 2020-22 has further accelerated the changes already compelling the state to reimagine its future.

Literally translated, “Ka Huina” refers to an intersection or nexus. This term serves as the central theme to the NHHA’s conference, which explores the nexus — the huina — of community, culture, tourism and sustainability, four distinct pillars ultimately bringing foundation and structure toward goals for a regenerative tourism future, according to an HTA press release. How they intersect, how they depend on each other, how they allow reimagination of the future, are the opportunities Ka Huina seeks to uncover and celebrate.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority Board of Directors elected former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann to serve as HTA’s new chair at a special board meeting today.

Hannemann replaces HTA Chair Blaine Miyasato, who is Hawaiian Airlines’ managing director of state and local government affairs and is stepping down due to additional responsibilities related to Alaska Airlines’ acquisition of Hawaiian. Miyasato will continue serving as one of HTA’s 12 board members.

HTA Interim President and CEO Daniel Naho‘opi‘i said, “Mufi Hannemann is a proven, well-respected leader who has a strong vision and passion for how HTA and tourism can make Hawaii a better place to live and work. We are grateful to Former Chair Miyasato for his leadership, and we look forward to working with Chair Hannemann to continue HTA’s work on behalf of the people of Hawaii.”

Hannemann, who is president and chief executive officer of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, also is a member of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board.

“HTA carries with it the duty to always do what’s best for the future of Hawaii and its people, while guiding our state’s largest and most important industry to be continually successful in the extremely competitive global tourism economy,” Hannemann said in a statement. “I’m honored to have the board’s confidence in serving as chair and look forward to working collaboratively with Governor Josh Green, our Legislature, and HTA’s leadership team to respond to the challenges faced by the industry so that everyone can share in the benefits tourism generates for Hawaii, while also taking care of our communities.”

Friday, September 09, 2022 8:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. In Person and Zoom Webinar

Supply-Side Constraints of Hawaii’s High Cost of Doing Business

Being a small-island economy, Hawaii faces natural constraints that increase costs, yet many supply constraints are due to policies and regulations that can be modified. These policies exacerbate price pressures if the economy is unable to increase the supply of goods and services. They result in more money chasing after a fixed amount of goods, driving up prices and reducing affordability. Policies aimed at increasing incomes can be counter-productive if the economy cannot respond by increasing supply.

This year, the HEA Annual Conference will investigate why Hawaii’s economy has a hard time supplying certain goods and being responsive to the price mechanism. We will identify the “natural” and “created” constraints facing key sectors of the economy and highlight real life experiences from business owners, academics and government officials working in Hawaii that have studied these problems.
