Evening Prayers

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Almighty and Eternal God!  I prostrate at the feet of Your holy Majesty, I adore You with all possible reverence. I believe and hold for certain all You have revealed to Your holy Church. I hope in Your infinite goodness and mercy, and I love You with all my heart.

Here pause a little to call to mind the specific blessings of this day.

O my God! I give You thanks, through Jesus Christ, for all the favors You have bestowed upon me, especially for creating me in Your own image and likeness, for redeeming me with Your Son’s Precious Blood, for making me a Christian, and preserving me this day. I beseech the Blessed Virgin, and all the saints, to give You thanks for ever and ever. Amen.

O my God! grant me the grace to know wherein I have offended Thee, and to have a perfect sorrow for my sins.

Here pause a little to ascertain what sins you may have committed.

  • By thought: Willingly entertaining bad, angry, impatient, or uncharitable thoughts and desires.
  • By word: Using bad language, cursing, lying, etc.
  • By deed: Being disobedient, rude, cross and unkind; having evil or dangerous company; doing an immodest action ; being idle.
  • By omission: Neglecting your prayers, your lessons or some other duty.

THE CONFITEOR

I confess to Almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I beseech the blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

May the Almighty God have mercy on me, and forgive me my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.

O most holy Virgin! be a mother to me: pray for me, now, and at the hour of my death.

O my good Angel! whom God has appointed to be my guardian, enlighten me, protect me, and guard me in all my actions. Amen.

Can you make some quiet time for God at the end of your day? Evening prayers can help you thank Him for the day’s blessings and ask for His forgiveness of your sins and protection during the night. It is an excellent time to take stock of your day’s activities in (hopefully!) a quiet atmosphere where, in His presence you can make an examination of conscience and then say a heartfelt Act of Contrition followed by prayers such as these:

I adore You, my God, and I love You with all my heart. I thank you for having created me, for having made me a Christian, and for having preserved me this day. Pardon me for the evil I have done today. If I have done anything good, be pleased to accept it. Protect me while I take my rest and deliver me from all dangers. May your grace be always with me. Amen.

Oh Lord, we pray you to visit this home and drive from it all snares of the enemy. Let Your holy angels dwell in it to preserve us in peace; and let Your blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

Other good evening prayers include the Prayer For Daily Neglects , Prayers For Protection , (including a famous prayer by St. Augustine), Prayers For Blessings (which includes another well known prayer by St. Alphonsus Liquori), a heartfelt Prayer Of A Lay Apostle ,  the memorare , and Nunc Dimittis , which is a special night prayer used in the Liturgy of the Hours.

Evening prayers should be part of a special time at the end of your day where you take an honest look at your life with our Lord. Just as we offer God everything in our day in morning prayers , at night we reflect on our actions, asking Him for the grace to serve Him better the next day. If you find yourself pressed for time, take a moment at least, with help from the Holy Spirit, to think about your sins and your spiritual progress.

Remember though that humility is essential in this task. Otherwise you might not approach God with the honesty you need to try to see yourself as He sees you!

This time spent in prayer can help you listen to our Divine Physician (as our Lord referred to Himself in Mark 2:17) as He diagnoses your spiritual maladies to help you get to Confession when necessary for His cure: His forgiveness and His grace from the Sacrament of Penance.

This doesn’t mean that you should only dwell on your litany of sins, however! You can thank God for inspiring the good things you’re doing, for those times when your soul “magnifies the Lord” (Luke 1:46). It’s also a good idea, when you have more time to savor these moments with Him, to say some wonderful evening prayers found here taken from a four-volume set of prayers, psalms, readings and hymns known as the Liturgy of the Hours. These books constitute the official prayer of the Church for praising God and sanctifying each day. (The third prayer given above is just a sample of the spiritual treasure trove found there!)

Priests as well as religious (such as friars and nuns) who have professed solemn vows are required to recite excerpts from the Liturgy of the Hours daily. Lay people are encouraged to recite them as well, either individually or in groups. These prayers are also referred to in this context as Compline (from the Latin word meaning completion) and often called “Night Prayer.”

Remember our Lord would love to hear your own thoughts in addition to your evening prayers as long as you give Him heart service not lip service. Don't be afraid to ask Him to bless your night and to help you the following day as you strive to share Eternal Life with Him someday in the bliss of what St. Thomas Aquinas called “our true native land,” Heaven!

Bible Verses for Evening Prayers

As the sun dips below the horizon and the world settles into a quiet hush, it’s the perfect time to slow down and talk with God.

Whether you’re seeking tranquility, strength, or a reminder of God’s love and forgiveness, there’s a verse to echo the whisper of your heart. Let’s explore some Bible verses that can be your companions as you wind down your day and turn your thoughts to prayer.

For Trust in God’s Plan: Proverbs 3:5-6

When the evening sets in, and the world quiets down, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the day’s events and look forward to tomorrow. But sometimes, you might feel overwhelmed or unsure about the future.

This scripture from Proverbs is a gentle nudge to put your trust in God’s hands. As you prepare for sleep, remind yourself to let go of the need to have all the answers. Pray for the faith to trust in God’s grand design for your life. Ask for the wisdom to recognize His guidance and for the courage to follow where it leads, even when the path ahead isn’t clear.

For Peaceful Rest: Psalm 4:8

The night can sometimes be a sea of restlessness, especially after a day filled with challenges. But Psalm 4:8 offers a soothing balm for your worried mind. Let this verse be the soft pillow upon which you rest.

As you recite these words, invite God’s peace into your heart and home. Let the assurance that you are in His care wrap around you like a warm blanket, allowing you to surrender into a restful and rejuvenating sleep, free from anxieties and fears.

For Strength and Renewal: Isaiah 40:31

As the day closes and you ready yourself for sleep, you might feel the weariness of the day’s burdens clinging to you. Isaiah reminds us that our strength is renewed in waiting upon the Lord.

In your evening prayer, envision yourself rising on wings like eagles, soaring above the day’s troubles. Ask God to renew your strength, preparing you for the new day ahead. Pray for the endurance to face whatever comes your way with a steadfast heart and unwavering faith.

For Reflection and Confession: 1 John 1:9

This verse encourages us to come clean with God and to lay out our mistakes and shortcomings before Him. Use your evening prayer as a time to quietly reflect on the day, to acknowledge where you’ve faltered, and to seek forgiveness.

Take comfort in knowing that God is just and forgiving, eager to cleanse you from your mistakes. Let this assurance of forgiveness allow you to end your day on a note of grace, setting the stage for a fresh start tomorrow.

For Love and Compassion: Colossians 3:12-14

In the quiet of the evening, it’s a good time to think about the relationships in your life. Colossians teaches us to clothe ourselves with virtues like compassion, kindness, and patience, creating a harmony that resonates with the love of the Lord.

In your night-time prayer, ask for the ability to exhibit these qualities. Seek guidance on how to mend strained relationships, offer forgiveness, and express love more openly.

As the stars take their watch for the night, may the prayers and verses you’ve read here be like a gentle lullaby for your soul. Let them soothe your worries, fill your heart with peace, and remind you that you’re never alone.

Carry these words with you into the night, and rest easy knowing that each prayer whispered and every verse pondered is a step closer to a serene and blessed tomorrow. Sleep well, knowing that you’ve ended your day with the most timeless conversation — a prayer.

5 Evening Prayers to End Your Day

5 evening prayers to end your day

Do you sometimes have trouble sleeping? Is it difficult to settle down after a stressful day? Modern life is busy and leaves us tense. What can you do to get rid of this tension so you can rest? Spend some time talking to God at the end of your day, and you can shed your troubles.

It is commonly understood that starting off your day with prayer is an excellent practice, but sometimes we forget that it is important to end your day in prayer as well. A bedtime prayer helps you to forget the turmoil of the day and concentrate instead on spiritual things.

Prayer is spiritual armour to protect you from attacks of the enemy and troubling thoughts. Here are five prayers you can use to end your day in a positive way and get your mind right for a blissful sleep.

1. Thankfulness

Lord, I thank you for walking with me through another day. Thank you for your love and provision, and for helping me do your will. Forgive me for anything I may have said or done that is displeasing to you, and help me to be the Christian you have created me to be. Be with me now as I sleep and fill my heart and mind with thoughts of you. Bless my family, my home and my loved ones and keep us safe from all harm.

Thankfulness is a great way to turn your thoughts in the right direction and away from worries and cares. This prayer helps you concentrate on God’s goodness and forget the trials of the day.

2. Rest from Worry

Lord Jesus, please cleanse my thoughts of anger and worry. I know that worry is not your will for me. Please provide for all my needs as you promise in your word. I give to you all my fears, cares and troubles, as you have told me to do. Bring peace and comfort to my heart and help me to rest in you and have peace. Forgive me of any sins I have committed today and fill my heart with your love.

When you are deeply troubled or worried , the Bible teaches us to bring this to God. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) The second prayer leads you to give your problems over to God so that you may have rest .

3. The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6: 9-13 KJV)

Jesus’ followers asked him to teach them to pray. The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer that he gave them. Pray this prayer or one that follows the same sort of format to help you to get your spirit in a place of peace. Don’t only use this prayer at night, but whenever you want to reach out to God.

4. Simple Nighttime Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, His Love to guard me through the night, And wake me in the morning light. If I should live another day I pray the Lord to guide my way. Amen

This simple children’s prayer has been around for centuries. You can pray it for yourself, or with your children to set the stage for a peaceful sleep and a feeling of comfort. The childlike simplicity may be more comfortable for you if you are unused to praying before sleeping.

5. Peace and comfort

Dear Lord, I need your presence. Please come and fill me with your spirit, and remove all troubling thoughts and fears. Comfort and guide me as I sleep and protect me from all evil. Help me to seek you and follow you all the days of my life, and keep me from sin. Protect me and my loved ones from harm and help us to know and love you. This I ask in Jesus’ name.

This prayer is short and simple and will bring peace, comfort and protection to you.

Ending your day with prayer is an excellent way to settle your emotions, bring peace and comfort to your spirit, and protect you from fear.

God is always waiting to hear from us and welcomes prayer at all times. Don’t wait until you are in the middle of a crisis to pray, but instead seek God daily. You will become more comfortable praying, and when a crisis does come, you will know how to pray for God’s help. Sleep well.

The power of a prayer journal.

journey deeper evening prayers

Sunday, July 23, 2017

Half birthday.

Today is my half birthday. This means that in exactly six months I'll be thirty years old. I find myself looking forward to thirty, but not in quite the same way that I've anticipated other birthdays. There is, of course, the excitement as a new year approaches, but there is too,  a sense of peace that whispers to me that my thirties will be just fine.

Like most people, my twenties have been turbulent. I've finished college and grad school, transitioned from being a student to being an employee, lived in three different states in the US. My friendships have changed too: I've made new friends and parted ways with some old ones; and of course I've had friends that have been with me through it all. At the start of my twenties all of my friends were students, all of us trying to work our way through early adulthood, today my friends are students and teachers and wives and mothers and professors and educators and business professionals and writers and dancers and so much more. As we've gone down different paths I've been constantly reminded that there's more: more people to love,  more opportunities to take, more places to go.

My twenties have shaped me into the woman I am, and helped me determine who is the woman that I want to be. They have been filled with music and prayer and dancing and reading and writing. As thirty approaches I know these things to be true in my life:

1. Community in the body of Christ is imperative. I do not want to live life without being connected to, and serving in a church.

2. Prayer is important, and God is faithful to answer our prayers. I want to be a woman who prays consistently, in every season of life, not just the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

3. Fear of failing is not a good enough reason for not trying. I've been disappointed quite a bit over this decade, about things for which I've been most hopeful, but I've been the most upset about the things that I never tried because I was too scared. "I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  I can do all things through him who strengthens me." (Phil 4:12-13)

4. I want to write. I've always wanted to write. I've been unknowingly creating opportunities for myself to write since forever. I will always want to write. I want to write as a major part of my job (which I do, currently). I want to write a book. And then another book. And then more books. I understand Jeremiah's feeling of having fire shut up in his bones.

5. There's nothing more encouraging than having friends and family and mentors who believe in you, especially on those days where you don't even dare to believe in yourself.

I'm thankful for the crazy turbulence of my twenties, and I look forward to seeing what the last six months of this decade will bring. Thirties, I'm looking forward to meeting you in six months!

Be blessed and shine through it all!

5 Retreat Opening Prayers to Deepen Your Spiritual Journey

Photo of author

My journey into the depths of biblical teachings began long ago, shaped by a childhood deeply rooted in Christian values.

a woman pray, retreat opening prayer

Embarking on a spiritual retreat is a profound journey toward renewal and connection—both with our own inner spirit and with the divine presence that guides us through life. At the heart of this journey lies an ancient and beautiful tradition: the opening prayer. In these quiet moments of reflection and appeal, we lay the foundation of our retreat experience.

As we pause to consider the significance of opening prayers in retreats, we can’t help but recognize the way they encapsulate our deepest intentions: thanks, guidance, unity, openness, and transformation. Each of these invocations serves to set not just the tone but also the direction of our spiritual sojourn.

Drawing from the rich tapestry of Christian heritage, let’s explore five opening prayers to begin your next retreat. Whether you are striving for personal growth or seeking solace within a community of kindred spirits, these prayers are like compasses, guiding us through the wilderness of our souls.

Table of Contents

Opening Prayer of Gratitude

Oh Loving Creator,

We gather here today with hearts overflowing with thankfulness. As we stand at the threshold of this retreat, we take a moment to express our profound gratitude for the gift of companionship, the beauty of Your creation, and the sacred time set apart from the demands of our daily lives.

We rejoice in the opportunity to come together in this serene sanctuary, where we can draw closer to You and to one another. Lord, You have provided us abundantly, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Psalm 107:1 reminds us, “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!” In this enduring love, we find our gratitude and our reason to praise.

Retreat Opening Prayer for Guidance

Eternal Shepherd,

As we navigate the waters of this retreat, we humbly seek Your guidance. Grant us Your divine wisdom as we delve into reflection, prayer, and fellowship. May Your Holy Spirit be our guide, leading us into a deeper understanding of Your word and will.

With every step we take, light our path so that we may walk confidently in the direction You have set before us. We trust in Proverbs 3:6, which assures us, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Opening Prayer for Unity

Gracious God,

In a world where division often reigns, we yearn for the unity that only You can provide. Unite us, O Lord, in purpose and in love as we embark on this retreat together. Let the walls that separate us crumble; may our differences enrich, rather than divide us.

As we gather in Your name, weave our hearts into a tapelet of fellowship, bound by the grace and love You bestow upon Your children. For it is written in Colossians 3:14, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Retreat Opening Prayer for Open Hearts

Merciful Father,

We come before You with open hands and willing spirits, asking that You likewise open our hearts. Prepare the soil of our souls for the seeds You wish to plant during this sacred time.

May we share freely the gifts You have given us, and may we receive with humility the wisdom imparted by others. Galatians 6:2 calls us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Help us to embody this holy calling, that our retreat may be a place of mutual support and care.

Prayer for Transformation

Almighty God,

You are the Potter; we are the clay. As we seek solitude and rest in Your presence, we also seek transformation. Shape us and mold us according to Your purpose. Burn away that which is chaff and strengthen what remains.

We embrace the changes You wish to enact in our lives, trusting in Your goodness and providence. May we leave this retreat not as we came, but more like our Savior, Jesus Christ. According to Romans 12: 2 , let us “be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Dear friends, the power of an opening prayer can’t be underestimated. As we speak these words aloud or cherish them silently in our hearts, they become the gentle winds that steer our ships toward safe and hallowed harbors.

Setting the right tone with opening prayers in retreats is akin to tuning the instruments before a symphony—it ensures that every note that follows resonates with clarity and beauty. So, as we take our departure for the retreat to find solitude, reflection, and connection, let us together embrace the embrace of these prayers.

During this retreat journey, exploring various prayers can unveil profound insights into our spiritual paths. It’s equally crucial to delve deeper into our understanding of spiritual connections and the essence of being cherished in the divine’s eyes. This profound sense of belonging can significantly enrich our prayer experiences.

May they guide you, uplift you, and ultimately draw you closer to the boundless love of our Creator. Go forth, dear reader, with the assurance that every whisper to the heavens is a crescendo in the symphony of your spiritual journey.
