Saudi-Japanese animation The Journey has become the first Arab film to screen at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre, a movie palace on the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

A dubbed version of the film in English made its US premiere at the venue on Tuesday.

Directed by Kobun Shizuno, the Japanese filmmaker behind several Detective Conan and Godzilla titles, the film is a collaboration between Manga Productions, a subsidiary of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Misk Foundation, and Toei Animation, the Tokyo studio behind cult classics including Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon.

Set in the kingdom 1,500 years ago, The Journey is an epic fantasy story inspired by the region’s ancient civilisations. It tells the story of a potter in Makkah who takes up arms to protect his city against ruthless invaders who threaten to destroy the Kaaba.

The film was originally released regionally, as well as in Japan, in last June.

Following the US premiere of The Journey, Manga Productions also announced a new partnership with Crunchyroll, a distributor of anime, manga and dorama in the Americas. The deal, Manga Productions said, would help the company expand its viewership and compete on a global level.

Crunchyroll has already begun distributing The Journey to more than 50 streaming platforms across North and South America, giving an audience of more than 125 million access to the film.

“We are thrilled that through The Journey, Arab and Saudi cinema established itself in Hollywood, the capital of filmmaking,” said Essam Bukhari, chief executive of Manga Production Company. “We screened at the historic Chinese Theatre, and it is merely the beginning for films coming out of Manga Productions and other Saudi films.

"We are proud of this partnership with Crunchyroll, which is one of the largest animation platforms in the world. We are going to work with them to connect Saudi art and creativity with the world."

Production of The Journey began in 2019 and took place in Riyadh and Tokyo. A dozen Saudi creatives were involved in story development, character design, pre-production, storyboards and colouring.

The Journey took two years to complete and had a production team of more than 330 people. The film was originally planned to premiere at the Cannes in 2020, but was cancelled during the pandemic.

Manga and Toei have previously collaborated on The Woodcutter's Treasure , a 20-minute animation based on Saudi Arabian folklore. The team is also producing a 13-episode animated TV series.

  • User Reviews
  • There are a lot of unnecessary fillers and stories that don't link well together, which makes the movie confusing and boring. The storyline could be much better!
  • The Arabic script wording is not good enough, weak structures, phrases, and expressions.
  • The story of the Year of Elephant is significant in the Arabian history, the movie doesn't include many backing details that could elevate the story depth.
  • From a historical perspective there are a lot of mistakes and inaccurate information, which makes the movie misleading especially for general audience.

How Saudi Arabia and Japan came together for Manga Productions’ animation ’The Journey’

‘The Journey’

Shizuno Kobun’s  The Journey  is the first feature produced by the pioneering collaboration between Saudi Arabia’s Manga Productions and Japanese major Toei Animation.

Based on an epic tale drawn from the Arabian Peninsula and featuring the distinctive anime animation look, The Journey is emblematic of Manga Productions’ aims to create content for global audiences with international standards, support local talent and showcase the region, its people, and its culture. The company is a subsidiary under MiSK Foundation in Saudi Arabia.

Set 1,500 years ago, the film details the story of Aws and the people of Mecca who are forced to take up arms to liberate themselves and their city from enslavement by a ruthless general and prevent it from being destroyed.

“ The Journey is a milestone project for Manga Productions, which since its start has been seeking to be a global pioneer in creative content,” says Essam Bukhary, CEO of Manga Productions (Saudi Arabia) and executive producer of The Journey .

Manga and Toei collaborated on the pre-production and creation of the story, character design and other assets with both Japanese and Saudi artists working together to bring the tale to life and screen.

“It is an example of the results of empowering Saudi talents and artists, and investing in their talents,” says Bukhary. “Young Saudi men and women were sent to be trained at Toei Animation studios [in Japan] and were recruited by Manga Productions to work on this film that is the result of Saudi creative content production in cooperation with international partners at the highest level.”

It was a fascinating and educational experience for the team at Toei Animation.

“It has been a great challenge for us as Japanese from the Far East to share in the history of ancient Arabia, which has completely different customs and cultures from ours,” explains Shimizu Shinji, chief advisor of Toei Animation and an executive producer on the project. “With the supervision and assistance of the Saudi team, we were able to collect the materials and ideas needed to prepare this film.”

The team discovered various cultural similarities. Shinji says he was happy to see the film’s heroes “fighting to protect the people they respect and love, as this is similar to the feelings of the Japanese people who respect and appreciate cooperation with others.”

The film is directed by celebrated animation director Shizuno Kobun, whose credits include Godzilla: City On The Edge of Battle . It marks the first time a Japanese director has worked on a movie in collaboration with Saudi Arabia. “It is a great honour to be able to make a Saudi movie,” says Kobun. “The movie fuses the cultures of the two countries from every side.”

The youthful Saudi team consisted of men and women aged between 23 and 36 while the Japanese team boasted big names from the industry with long and established careers. The mixture of ages, languages and techniques helped create a film that fuses the Saudi and Japanese spirit.

Manga has two branches — one in Riyadh and another in Tokyo — and both had teams working on this project with the Toei team in the Japanese capital.

The Journey is the latest in a long-standing relationship between Manga and Toei. Toei Animation participated in the MiSK Foundation Global Forum in 2017 before uniting to produce short film The Woodcutter’s Treasure and Future’s Folktales, the latter being broadcast in 2020 on more than 32 channels and platforms, reaching more than 100 million views.

EXCLUSIVE: Details Surface For New Animated Fantasy Project At Disney

Now that the WGA/SAG strikes and the holidays are over, we’re starting to see a lot of projects that were paused last year resume production. This includes Daredevil: Born Again and Lilo & Stitch . We’re also seeing previously announced projects finally begin production, such as Tron: Ares . Most excitingly, after 6 months without any major movie or TV news, we’re learning of brand new projects entering development.

Recently, we at The DisInsider actually came across details about one top secret project in development for Disney Television Animation.

The project is mysteriously titled JOURNEY , and while it does not look like it has been officially green-lit yet, a brief description of the pilot confirms the show will fall into the sci-fi/fantasy genre.

READ: EXCLUSIVE – The Minds Behind ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’ Discuss The Film’s Legality & Why It’s Really A Love Letter To Disney (INTERVIEW)

Now, plot details are scarce, but character descriptions attached to a grid we’ve obtained help paint a decent picture of what the show might actually be about.

The main character is listed as a teenager named Journey, so immediately we know that the title is supposed to act as a double entendre. She’s described as a girl who has “always been a little right-brained, a little messy, a little ‘strange.’ Her interests include “Dungeons & Dragons” and fantasy stories. While she is often dismissed for being so enthralled by fantasy “nonsense,” her “happy place” is in ancient novels with fantastic creatures, powerful heroes, and magical worlds.

You don’t have to read between the lines to deduce that her interest in such fictional worlds will most likely play a role in the show. Whether or not she gets to travel to them, or finds herself transported to one however, remains to be scene.

One other character description we’ve obtained describes a male co-lead named Tunde.

He’s also described as a teen, who is “free-spirited, fun-loving, thrill-seeker with magic skills, living a nomadic lifestyle beyond the Dome with his small crew.” Also described as “a champion of peace and love,” the grid literally likens to Bob Marley.

Now, unlike Journey’s description, Tunde’s teases what the show might actually be about. Additional details in his character description show that he likes to hang with his “fellow magical outcast friends.” This tells us that Tunde is just like the characters that Journey has been reading about her whole life. While it’s pretty clear that Journey will indeed encounter the magical world in the show, it’s unclear how or to what degree.

Production on the pilot will begin this March. Seeing as how the search for the two lead voice actors is ongoing, no cast members or other talent have been revealed yet.

Once again, because these are just details for a pilot there is no guarantee that the show will ever see the light of day, but we’ll try to bring you as many details as possible if/as they become available. After all, you just never know when the company will dole out its next instant classic.

Student Testimonials

I have taken many courses over my 31+ professional years, both in person and online, as well as teaching since ’94. I am always curious what other people have to say and how they teach as you can learn so much. Lucas just has it, plain and simple. He is so much wiser than his years. Highly recommend Lucas! Great job!

I love how simplistic the teacher is and how well he explains it. He really teaches with a passion and with a true craving to help others access in the ways that he is.

Yes, I really like how the instructor explains things in a comprehensive way. The demonstrations are very useful , and the instructor has a very good speaking voice with no annoying stutters and ums and uhs.

The amount of detail in this course is the same quality training you would get paying thousands of dollars to take a 3D course at a university. Just a few minutes into this course I have learned foundational skills that other tutorials I have found online on outlets like YouTube completely ignores.

What I personally loved most about this class is that the instructor was super down to earth, direct and didn’t muddle through things. He talked from his own personal experiences and gave you a real look at what to expect from delving into this industry. It’s actually better then a lot of college courses I’ve taken.

I like the structure and length of each lesson. Very informative and comprehensive approach. Also the tutor has pleasant voice and clear pronunciation (which is important when English is not your native language)! So far I’ve been enjoying the course. Thank you!

I am loving this course. It’s taught me more in 4 13 minute videos than I was able to be taught over several classes at university .

I have some background with medical illustration. The approach Lucas takes is one that is much more comprehensive and relatable to my way of working. He is very clear, concise and his personality really comes through during the lessons which help to keep me engaged in the learning.

The Evolution and History of Animation: From Pencil to Pixel

Some of our fondest childhood memories belong to those lazy Sunday mornings spent watching cartoons on TV.

Whether it was the iconic tales of our favorite house cat, attempting to best his adversary in a futile match.

or the carrot-chewing rabbit humoring us repeatedly with “Eh… What’s up, doc?” , animated pictures have always captured our imagination.

It’s perhaps this curiosity and enthusiasm, which has led to so many dramatic changes in the video animation industry, in such a short period of time, Especially when it comes to the animation industry in Japan, the USA, and Korea.

Delve deeper and you’ll find animation technique is as old as storytelling and continues to captivate both home and business audiences in the form of video marketing .

In simple terms, the animation is art-in-motion, something the human beings discovered as early as the Paleolithic age.

Animation today is characterized by cartoon characters - in- motion, telling a story.

The history of animation technology showcasing moving art pieces and images changed over the years.

We are now in a world when computer and internet technology helps create some terrific animated videos enjoyed by diverse assemblage.

Let’s now fly back in time, relive the evolution and history of animation and also explore some of what’s yet to come.

  • The Fascinating Roots
  • The Crude Beginnings
  • The Celluloid Shift (1888-1914)
  • Traditional Animation Technology (1914-1967)
  • The Computer Revolution - Motion Graphics (1967-1984)
  • The Golden Era of CGI (1984-2018)
  • Post-2018 - What's Coming?

Thinking of getting your video? We can help! Get a sneak peek into what we've done for brands like yours!

The fascinating roots

People realized very quickly that pictures taken of a moving object could be flipped through in succession, to create the illusion of a motion picture.

Did you know that a 5200-year-old pottery depicted a moving goat through a series of images?

Now take a look at the following image from an Egyptian mural showcasing a wrestling match through a series of images:

Egyptian Mural

Could you guess that this mural is around 4000 years old?

Another mesmerizing art form that closely resembles animation became popular in 18th-century France - it was called shadowgraphy .

People actually told stories using hand-drawn shadows - also called ‘cinema in silhouette’.

Shadowgraphy

Stories were also being told with the help of the magic lantern (invented by Christiaan Huygens in (1659) used to project moving images.

magic lantern

Let's take a look at the timeline of animation history now:

The crude beginnings

The Phenakistoscope was the first real animation device. The device was discovered by Joseph Plateau in the year 1832.

Phenakistoscope

It was the first device that could create a fluid illusion of animation.

The celluloid shift (1888 - 1914)

The early animation films were crude, made with devices that were relatively simple and primitive.

The first such system was called the Theatre Optique (invented by Émile Reynaud and patented in 1888). His series of animated films included Pauvre Pierrot and Autour d'une cabine.

Each of his films contained 300-700 frames(painted images) to last 10-15 minutes.

Traditional animation technology (1914 - 1967)

In the traditional animation history, hand-drawn animation was created using Cel Animation.

Cel was a transparent sheet consisting of cellulose nitrate and camphor, used to create hand-drawn objects.

Characters were drawn on Cels and superimposed on common background images to reduce the number of frames and production times.

Colonel Heeza Liar (1914) was the first animated cartoon series created using this animation technique.

The production house was John Bray Studios . Take a look:

Steamboat Willie was released in 1928 and it was the first animated film to include sound.

Many consider this the first animated feature film but there were 7 films which were released before this.

However, this was the first one completely made using hand-drawn animation technique.

The movie also marked the debut of the lovable Mickey Mouse. Following the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, animated films became a popular form of entertainment.

The stories and the characters started getting widely recognized and remembered by everyone, everywhere on the globe.

Another animation technique that was commonly used in the traditional era was stop-motion animation.

You must have observed the jerks in the movement of objects within film sequences of the era.

These are caused because the technique is used to create a perception of movement in the object.

The Computer Revolution - Motion Graphic (1967- 1984)

Although the first few computer animated films were very basic, to say the least, it nevertheless changed the way animation was done.

Hummingbird (1967) was the first computer-generated animated film - it was made using 30,000 images and 25 motion sequences generated by a computer.

The frame by frame animation of 2D characters could now be done entirely on computers.

Not only did it make the process less arduous, it gave graphic artists more control and they were able to produce content without the use of actors, expensive set pieces or props.

One of the first 2D animated films in the history of 2D animation was Sword in The Stone , produced by Disney.

Other popular Disney films of the era included the Jungle Book, Mary Poppins, and the Aristocrats.

The golden era of CGI (1984-2023)

The stop-motion technique was succeeded by what we call today as computer animation.

Modern computer animation includes both 2D as well as 3D animated graphics which are then put in motion using either frame-by-frame or rigging technique.

The technique ensured that films were created and rendered faster, also ensuring that animation was not just used to produce cinema and TV series but also for brand storytelling and web series.

Let us first look at CGI revolutionized cinema and entertainment and then understand how it impacted businesses:

Cinema and Entertainment

But where computers have really pushed the envelope is with the development of 3D animation.

3D models or characters were constructed on the computer monitor using geometrical shapes in a 3D coordinate system.

Once a virtual skeleton of the character was complete, eyes, limbs and clothes were moved on to the frames and the animation was rendered.

One of the first films to be produced using 3D Animation Computer Graphics in the history of 3d animation was The Adventures of Andre and Wally B by Pixar .

Pixar presented its ground-breaking form of entirely CGI-rendered animation with Toy Story in 1995.

Using a complex system of model articulation and motion-control coding, Pixar was able to create characters with depth, charm, and personality.

Everything culminated with James Cameron’s two-decades-in-the-making masterpiece, Avatar .

It used advanced CGI and motion capture techniques, requiring 2,000 Hewlett-Packard servers, sporting 35,000 processor cores and 104 terabytes of RAM, to render the film.

While animated films were being made using computers, the advent of internet technologies made the process of creating 2D and 3D animated videos simpler and faster.

Animated videos for Branded Video Content

Big Brands like Coke , Apple , Hubspot , and Dropbox have started making use of cartoon animated videos and motion graphics to tell their brand story.

Animation has entered mainstream brand storytelling after the advent of the internet and related technologies.

Animation for brand storytelling can also be divided into two -

  • Traditional frame-by-frame and stop motion technique
  • Modern animation techniques that include motion graphics and 3D computer animation

In traditional animation, each frame is placed one after the other and there are about 24-29 frames per second.

Modern animation makes use of the rigging technique wherein you need to create only 2 frames for each sequence (the first frame and the last frame) - the computer program generates all the frames in between.

Traditional Frame-by-Frame and Stop Motion

At Broadcast2World we provide customized video animation services to help companies stand out from their competitors, and connect with their audience through visual stories.

Once such company that approached us for creating buzz for their brand was Electric Monkey .

Electric Monkey is an energy drink and wanted to launch its product through a short cartoon video commercial.

The client wanted to create a fun, electrifying video that helped spread awareness and brand recall for their product. In this case, we created a 2D character animated video using the frame-by-frame technique. Take a look:

You can read more about the process of making the short and snappy video that helped electric monkey grab audience attention .

Here is another artsy example of a 2D style animated video from Ford. It showcases a beautiful Father-Daughter relationship in a short story.

Modern 3D Animation and Motion Graphics

Winsupply is another notable example of how we helped a hardware brand create awareness through a story-driven cartoon animated video.

Our client supplies hardware products and had created a platform to help consumers, firms, and contractors to buy and sell hardware online.

Hardware is a low involvement category and an online platform would not find acceptance by consumers or business owners.

Our primary challenge was to communicate the benefits of using the online platform to both B2B as well as a B2C audience.

We created a cartoon character Buddy who would, in the story, benefit from the services of Winsupply - next we ensured that our story would appeal to both businesses as well as the direct consumer.

You can read the full story of how we helped Winsupply over here .  This video was a 3D  character animation video made using a combination of frame-by-frame and rigging technique.

Another very common animation technique that’s being used by different types of businesses today is motion graphic animation.

It uses computer-generated graphics to create animated videos with sound and voice over.

Such video designs  may not be strictly cartoon character driven and can use diverse graphic types.

Here is an example of a motion graphic video we created for Blue Green Water Technologies:

Post-2023 - What’s Coming

Introducing fidoy: bringing stories to life with animation.

Animated short films have been around since the early 1900s.

It is widely regarded that the short film, “Fantasmagorie” is the first animated short film ever made, created by French animator Emile Cohl in 1908.

But how have animated short films evolved since then?

Have a look at the trailer for this animated short film from 2023 called, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse”

This film won the Academy Award for the Best Animated Short Film in 2023.

As you can see, animated short films have been a part of popular culture for centuries now and they have become important mediums of entertainment that tell an impactful story in just a few minutes.

And it’s this allure of animated short films that inspired us to create Fidoy , your destination for amazing stories brought to life with animation.

Read along to have a look at some of Fidoy’s best work.

1. Power of Words

We often underestimate the effect words can have on someone.

In reality, words, no matter how ordinary they are, can have a profound effect on people depending on how you use them.

In most cases, negative words become an anchor that slowly eats away at a person’s self-esteem and confidence.

“The Power of Words” depicts this human experience using character animations and takes you on a journey of letting go of those negative words and embracing a renewed self.

2. The Ego Cloud

Rabindranath Tagore once said,

“We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility”

It’s easy to think that the quote is a commentary on humility and humbleness but it goes far beyond that.

In actuality, it’s an observation of how humility is the best path to letting go of your ego.

“The Ego Cloud” depicts the story of a cloud and its interactions with a humble farmer which ultimately helps the cloud let go of its ego.

Have a look at how animations turn an intangible emotion like ego into an animated character that feels relatable and personal.

3. The Story of Bubble Wrap

A report by Growth Market Reports found that the Bubble Wrap packing market size is set to reach $4.07 Billion by 2031.

But before Bubble Wrap became the iconic product we know today, did you know that it was first intended to be used as wallpaper?

Every iconic product has a story behind it, a story of successes and failures, and Bubble Wrap is no exception to this.

Witness the remarkable, true story of Bubble Wrap in this animated short video , “The Story of Bubble Wrap”.

AR/VR and 360 Degree Animated Videos

Brands and content producers are now creating animated videos using latest technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality and 360-degree video technology.

The technologies are highly experiential and help create immersive stories.

As a brand, if you wish to grab consumer eyeballs and be a trendsetter, then you must not miss out on creating your brand stories using these technologies.

Take a look at this example of a 360-degree animated video from Gorillaz:

Animated Web Series

We are now living an in an era where web series is the most watched form of entertainment.

Live action series like Game of Thrones, Jessica Jones and Queer Eye, and animated series such as Happy Tree Friends, Eddsworld, and Salad Fingers are what the masses are glued to.

Brands too are embracing the trend and creating entertaining animated series to please their audience and build a relationship with them.

Starbucks recently created an animated web series called 1st and Main.

It’s a fully animated video series that tells stories set inside a Starbucks outlet.

The videos are short yet very adorable - take a look at one of the videos from the series:
