 Combine Routes

The Combine Routes feature enables you to join together two or more routes.

The start of the route being appended must be near the end of the route it is being attached to. If there is a gap, a interconnecting path will be automatically plotted between the two routes, taking into account the Auto-Plot mode you have selected.

These options are by nature more restrictive than the standard By Bike option, so you may need to turn them off if you find that you can't auto-plot a route to your next point.

Routing with both of these options is carried out using map data from OpenStreetMap (OSM). Their effectiveness will depend on the availability of surface and cycling access data in your local area. If you would like to help improve the map data in your area, please take a look at our How-To Guide .

It may sometimes be necessary to dismount from your bike. Please observe local laws regarding right of way.

On Foot Auto-Plot Options

Premium members have the option to refine this by selecting Prefer Off-Road . This will give priority to waymarked trails and other footpaths, while trying to avoid roads, particularly busier ones. Obviously this will depend on the availablity of suitable trails and paths in the area. It works best if there is a bigger distance between the points you plot, as there are then more alternative routes to consider.

Please be careful to observe all signs for rights of way when following routes you are not familiar with, as we cannot guarantee that they are safe for your chosen activity or that they do not cross private land.

Save the Split Routes

  • The new split routes will be saved with the same attributes (terrain, privacy, etc.) as the original route, subject to any usage limits. You can alter the attributes of each route later from your My Routes page.
  • The split routes will not include any detours from the original route.
  • The split routes will not include any photos from the original route.
  • The split routes will not include any symbols or labels added directly to the map rather than the route's directions.

Auto-Plot Feature

If you find that you are unable to auto-plot on a road or path you see on the map, it usually means that the route engine couldn't find a viable route between the last point you plotted (the origin) and the one you are trying to plot (the destination). Route calculations are made using OpenStreetMap (OSM) maps, so this problem means that one or more of the origin, the destination or an unavoidable road in between are not tagged on OSM as suitable for the Auto-Plot mode you chose (BY ROAD, ON FOOT or BY BIKE). To overcome this you can temporarily change the Auto-Plot switch to another setting (ON FOOT usually has the widest access) or turn it off to plot manually. Deselecting any of the Auto-Plot sub-options (e.g. Unvoid Unpaved, Prefer Off-Road) can also sometimes help, as these options are by nature more restrictive.

You can also contribute to improving the OSM maps by adding missing access tags, as OSM is a community project where anyone can make edits. See our guide on correcting map errors for more details on this. Changes you make on OSM will flow through to plotaroute.com as we implement regular updates.

It is also worth noting that the exact positions of roads and paths can vary between map providers, for example some intentionally move map features very slightly to make their maps clearer to read. So, if you are plotting a route on a non-OSM map, you may occasionally find that the route is not perfectly aligned with the map. However, any discrepancies will not be visible if you then share your route, as routes are shared using OSM maps.

The 7 Best Mobile Apps to Plan Your Walking Adventures

Walking is a fantastic form of exercise and it can also be a mindful experience. Use these apps to plan your routes and explore new areas.

Walking is a simple way to exercise and stimulate your senses. Whether you prefer parks or urban strolls, you can plan your routes easily and explore new places with apps. Here are the most reliable mobile apps for planning and tracking your walks. Get to know each of their tool sets and decide which suits you best.

1. Footpath Route Planner

Footpath Route Planner lets you choose your type of journey, whether you’re walking, running, or cycling. You can use the search tool for known locations or move the map around to find obscure ones. Then, you can draw your route on the map, edit as you wish, and save it. If the line is near a recognized path or road, the app will even snap your route into place for a more accurate representation, unless you deactivate the feature.

All saved walking maps are in My Routes , where you can view their shape, distance, and more. You can also track yourself with the app’s GPS tool. It uses a customizable voice assistant and displays useful information like your miles per hour, elevation, and sunset time. Combine it with a dedicated fitness app like TainingPeaks for more effective workouts.

There are lots of handy tools on Footpath Route Planner that can make your walks easier to plan, and even more so with an Elite upgrade. The subscription unlocks perks like turn-by-turn navigation, offline map downloads, premium maps, and hill steepness analysis.

2. Walk with Map My Walk

If you prefer to actively track and save your walking routes instead of drawing them beforehand, try MapMyWalk’s mobile platform. You’ll get a powerful fitness app that keeps a log of your journeys, including your distance, duration, average pace, and calorie burn. You can also customize the app’s functions during walks, from its basic voice feedback to the form coaching audio if you have Under Armour smart shoes. Even better, Walk with Map My Walk is full of tutorials and challenges to take your hikes to the next level, giving you goals to aim for and exercises to add. A few downsides to keep in mind are that you have to create an account and allow data access to use the app. It also needs to work in the background for maximum efficiency, so it’s not the best option if you want to save battery life.

Strava is similar to Map My Walk’s app in that it tries to motivate you with challenges and social features, while also giving you access to lots of route tracking and fitness tools. However, there aren’t as many free options in Strava. For example, you can use the Maps tab to plan journeys by finding and plotting routes, but most of that content is only available to subscribers.

On the other hand, the Record tool is mostly free, including its GPS tracker, basic map styles, audio cues, and location beacon. This last feature is a big advantage, as using your phone as a GPS tracking device can be a lifesaver if you get lost or feel threatened. Some challenges and clubs are free to join, too.

If you like connecting with others and feeling like part of a team when exercising, Strava is a good platform for you. A premium account even lets you create your own groups.

4. AllTrails

AllTrails is one of the best apps for navigating biking trails as well as scenic routes for walkers, especially for those who like to share their experiences. In addition to being able to track and log your journeys, you get a friendly community to interact with. You can see your progress while walking, add photos and waypoints, and even leave a review when you’re done so that other users can know what to expect.

A major advantage to using AllTrails is that it makes local route suggestions, including the best views, waterfalls, and weekend-worthy walks. Each option is rated by difficulty, too. The community lets you connect with friends, post your walks, and explore other people’s adventures and pictures.

A simpler app to those above is OS Maps. Its layout is less appealing than some other options, but it offers all the tools you need to track and plan routes. Specify what kinds of trails you want and for what activity, and OS Maps will find them, whether they're nearby or in a completely different location.

You can also draw a route, and the app will estimate the distance, total ascent, and time you’ll need to reach your destination. You’ll even find a GPS tool to record activities while you’re on the go, show your progress, give you a route to follow, and more. The premium version gives you access to other features like topographic, aerial 3D, and offline maps.

6. PlanMyRoute

PlanMyRoute is versatile and easy to use. For starters, you can add details about yourself, like age, height, and weight, so the app can estimate your calorie burn. However, this personalization requires a subscription. In addition to plotting your trails by hand and saving up to four routes, you can use the A-B mode , where you choose your start and end point and let the app show you the most direct journey.

You can also add waypoints and adjust in which order you want to visit them. PlayMyRoute will change its directions accordingly. Besides a calorie burn calculator, premium features include unlimited routes, more map styles, cloud storage, and the Draw Mode tool that snaps your lines to known roads and trails.

Get to know the E-walk app when looking for useful walk-planning services. It does have a slight learning curve, but its capabilities are worthwhile and simple enough that you still don’t need to rely on fitness apps to maintain an active lifestyle. It basically lets you combine base and overlay maps depending on what details you need for a particular trek. You can then download some of these maps and use them offline.

E-walk also features a route recorder that plots your course in real time and lets you add markers with photos, descriptions, and distinctive icons. There are two premium packages that unlock more tools, from map scale displays and SD card storage to full offline map access.

You've decided to start walking for health and fitness, and now you need a plan to build your walking endurance and speed. As a beginner , you should focus on using good walking posture and technique as you steadily build your walking time.

Brisk walking for 30 minutes per day, totaling 150 minutes per week, is recommended by health authorities to reduce your health risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other conditions.  

While any amount of walking is beneficial, you can amplify the benefits by doubling the recommendation and walking a total of five hours a week, or by picking up the pace. The increased duration or intensity are particularly helpful if weight loss is your goal. Just remember that you'll also need to improve your diet for best results.

You can build a walking habit by walking at least five days per week and tracking your walks . If you have an ongoing health condition, talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise program.

Start each walk by checking your walking posture . You will want to walk at an easy pace for a couple of minutes before you speed up. Wear flexible athletic shoes and comfortable clothing. You can do your walking outdoors, indoors, or on a treadmill.

Start with a 15-minute walk at an easy pace. Walk five days the first week. You want to build a habit, so consistency is important. Spread out your rest days, such as making day 3 a rest day and day 6 a rest day.

Weekly total goal : 60 to 75 minutes

Add five minutes a day so you are walking for 20 minutes, five days a week. Or, you may wish to extend yourself more on some days, followed by a rest day.

Weekly total goal : 80 to 100 minutes

Add five minutes a day so you are walking for 25 minutes, five days a week.

Weekly total goal : 100 to 125 minutes

How Fast Should Beginners Walk?

Walkers should aim for a brisk walking pace to achieve a moderate-intensity walking workout. That is the exercise intensity that is associated with the best health benefits of walking. Moderate intensity is usually associated with walking a mile in 20 minutes or less,   at a target heart rate of 64% to 76% of your maximum heart rate.  

What brisk walking feels like:

  • Your breathing is heavier than normal.
  • You are still able to carry on a full conversation while walking.

Elevation profile explanation

How is elevation profile calculated.

By definition, elevation gain is the difference in elevation between two points on the earth's surface. These points are defined by geographic coordinates. Let's go into more detail to understand how MapPlanner calculates this from your route. What is the purpose of the elevation change for your route (rides or hikes)? In order to prepare your routes well (and to establish your progressions precisely), it is necessary to base on the difficulty of the route by calculating the difference in altitude for each point of the route. On a flat area, the calculation is quite simple, the difficulty is constant over the whole route, so we use only the complete distance of the route. On the other hand, on a winding path, the calculation will depend strongly on the slope of the difference in level. The time taken will then become longer and longer depending on the slope of the terrain. Walking only 1km on a slope can be as difficult as running 3km on flat ground. The distance even becomes secondary to calculate the total difficulty.

Interest of the IBP index

The Hiking Federation uses a rating system for hikes based on 3 criteria: - the effort - technicality - the risk This score between 0 and 100 allows to evaluate a hiking itinerary and to deduce the physical condition and the time needed according to the person. MapPlanner uses an equivalent mechanism to determine the time required to hike a trail. It is not useful for running because it is often done on roads or paths.

A little theoretical point: what is elevation gain?

To complete the above definition, let's use an example to understand the concept of elevation profile. If your starting point is at 1000m and you ride to 2000m and then come back to 1000m, your global elevation will be 0 but the cumulated elevation will be 2000m. The global elevation is the difference between the altitude of the starting point (here 1000m) and the altitude of the arrival point (always 1000m), so in the end 0m! In the case of a hike, we ignore this data because it is not interesting. On the other hand, the cumulative difference in altitude is the sum of all the differences in altitude. In the previous example, it will be 2000m. We can also distinguish between the positive elevation (1000m) and the negative elevation (1000m). The positive difference in height, which represents the total of the elevation change, will be faster to cover than the negative difference in height, which represents the total of the descents. As a general rule, we consider that it takes twice as much time to go up than down. This rule is used by our algorithm to refine the calculation of the time needed to cover the route.

How to determine the difference in altitude in practice?

After a quick theoretical lesson, here are the different ways to know the difference in altitude. Using the MapPlanner ride creation tool, you can display the elevation change curve directly below your route. In addition, once the route is created, all the important information is summarized below the map. This way you can quickly see the positive and negative elevation changes of your route. After planning your route, we advise you to use a map to check in advance and during your trip, the difficulty required to achieve it in the estimated time. On the map, the contour lines are represented every 10 meters. The closer the curves are to each other, the greater the difficulty! Finally, you can also use a dedicated GPS (like Garmin) or an application on your smartphone, to know in real time your progress on the course.

How to plan a walking route

The secret to a great day out in the hills isn’t how fit you are, how pricy your gear is, or even how experienced you are. It’s all about planning for success: having a Great Plan (and a Great Plan B) that is tailored to you and your group.  Mountain Leader Lucy Wallace reveals her tried-and-tested ways to plan a walking route…

Knowledge is power

If you are new to walking, planning your first few walking route forays can be intimidating and full of ‘unknown unknowns’ that can become genuine barriers to getting out there.  

However, it doesn’t matter how experienced you are; planning well for a day in the hills is the best way to have a great time and stay out of trouble.  

Solid research is not only important; it’s an enjoyable part of preparation. Choose information sources carefully, for although it’s tempting to head straight to the online ‘hive mind’, there are loads of armchair experts ready to dish out poor advice. Try to keep social media for inspiration, and use trusted sources for hard facts.  

Look for info about things like about boggy terrain, steep ground, potential river crossings, navigational difficulties, and public transport and car parking facilities.  

Always have a Plan B and even a Plan C on standby in case the weather is poor, or (as often happens in honeypot areas) if the car park is full when you get there. Identify escape routes and key places where you can decide to turn back if slower than expected.  

Plan a walking route using the right information:

  • Walkers’ maps (Ordnance Survey, Harvey Maps) are a good starting point, but they don’t easily give up subjective information like car parking and bogginess.  
  • Guidebooks bring a lot of joy, especially for longer trips. I love to thumb through pages of carefully selected routes. It’s worth noting when the book was published, though,   as access and conditions underfoot can change.  
  • Websites and apps are improving their offering all the time with granular information about routes, with difficulty grades, ascent profiles, terrain, public transport access and parking. Some are editor-curated, for example Walkhighlands or the TGO Magazine website, whilst others are based around either user-generated data, such Ramblers Scotland’s Scottish Paths Map, or Komoot, which has a built-in route planning tool.

How long will it take?

‘Benightments’ – when you run out of daylight whilst still on the hill – are a common theme in mountain rescue callout logs at this time of year.   Likewise, it can be equally rubbish at any time to run out of food or miss the last bus home.  

If using traditional maps to plan, rather than an online or app-based planning tool, it’s worth knowing that one grid square on OS or Harvey maps is 1km across. Paths, of course are wiggly, so measuring distance in this way is very basic. The contour lines denote height gain (10m apart on OS maps of upland areas, 15m apart on Harvey maps). A rule of thumb often applied is 4km per hour and 1 minute for every 10m of height gained, but this doesn’t take into account rests, looking at the view or simply adopting a leisurely pace. Don’t forget to build this into your plan.  

Think about what time you want to be back, and when darkness falls. In autumn and winter, especially for longer routes, be prepared to be caught out after dark, and start early to minimise the impact of this. Allow lots of extra time, especially if there is a group of you, and ensure you have plenty of food and drink to fuel your day, plus a bit more, just in case.  

Know Thyself (and Thy Mates)

Before you plan a walking route, it’s useful to ask some questions about yourself, your aspirations, and those of your group. Consider the following, and be honest in your appraisal:

  • How experienced am I/are we?  
  • Are we equipped for what we want to do?
  • Do we need any additional skills that we haven’t yet mastered – for example navigation, scrambling or winter skills?  

Pushing your limits can be fun and rewarding, but if you answered yes to the last question, consider whether this is the best choice of route right now. Dialling back the difficulty a bit, and building up slowly, is a good way to ensure you are ready to tackle whatever comes your way.  

Some of these skills can be quickest to learn with some outside assistance; and if you are in a hurry to progress, there are loads of excellent courses available for hill walkers.  

Be a gear guru

Have you got the appropriate gear for this route? The weather up high is often very different from in the valleys.   Be prepared for it to be colder and wetter, and for conditions to change quickly – and pack accordingly.  

Ensure you also have some spare gear for emergencies so you can look after yourself and your group if you find yourself waiting for assistance in bad weather.   The following is a fairly standard kit list for the hills:  

  • If you’re yet to get a waterproof jacket then take a look at the best waterproof jackets guide or our budget waterproof jackets guide.
  • Warm layer  
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Head torch

  • Survival bag and/or emergency shelter
  • See what the best dehydrated meals for hiking are
  • Small first aid kit.  

You may wish to take extra items, such as spare layers, trekking poles, or even ice axe and crampons, depending on the weather and terrain.  

Plan a walking route with the weather in mind

Read the long-range weather forecast early in your planning. Avoid ridges and high summits in strong winds, and consider whether a river crossing will be an issue on your route if there is heavy rain both before and during your adventure. Look for key bits of information that include summit wind speeds, temperature and precipitation.   A low cloud base and poor visibility can also lead to problems if you are not an experienced navigator.  

There are plenty of specialist sources of mountain forecasts, and it’s good to check more than one as they do vary. Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst is the best approach!  

Check the forecast again just before setting out, it’s never too late for Plan B.  

Good sources of summit-level forecasts include the following:  

  • The Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS): produces detailed forecasts up to three days ahead for walkers in all the mountain regions of the UK. mwis.org.uk
  • The Met Office: produces similar forecasts up to five days ahead, as well as individual summit-level forecasts in graphic form, for popular peaks. metoffice.gov.uk/weather/specialist-forecasts/mountain

In Case of Emergency

Tell someone where you are going and what time you plan to be back, and include any contingency plans in this information. And don’t forget to let them know when you are safely back.  

Download the OS Locate app, which will provide you with a quick grid reference of your location. You can register your mobile phone for the 999 text emergency service, which is handy in areas of patchy service. Simply text ‘register’ to 999.  

You will get a reply, with instructions to complete your registration. Make sure that you have plenty of battery on your mobile phone and consider carrying a battery power pack if you are using it for photos and navigation.  

Mountain Rescue can take a while to get to remote locations, so be sure you have sufficient warm gear to take care of yourself and your group in the meantime.

Whether you prefer going for a stroll in nature or cueing up a podcast and doing laps at the gym, there are many ways to reap the benefits of walking . Here’s what you need to know about walking for weight loss and helpful tips for getting your steps in, according to experts.

Susane Pata, CPT, is a certified group fitness instructor and content strategist for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Alissa Palladino, RDN, CPT , is a registered dietitian and personal trainer based in Atlanta, Georgia.

How much weight can I lose from walking?

The short answer? It depends. An individual can typically burn up to 5,600 calories a month from walking alone, which is roughly 1.6 pounds, according to Susane Pata, CPT, a certified group fitness instructor and content strategist for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). However, the exact number is dependent on a person’s individual calculations that take weight, level of conditioning, and training capacity into consideration.

It also depends on whether or not you're in a calorie deficit , in which you burn more calories than you consume, Wickham says. Any type of movement you engage in throughout the day can help you increase your overall calorie expenditure, he says—but since walking doesn't burn quite as many calories as, say, running or sprinting, you'll probably see more weight loss progress if you combine your walking routine with other high-intensity workouts .

"For example, if you only have 30 minutes to exercise and your goal is to burn the most calories during your 30 minutes, walking isn’t the best choice to accomplish this goal," Wickham says. "You will burn far more calories if you increased the intensity of your exercise with things like jogging, lifting weights, sprinting, a HIIT workout , or some combination of these."

How much should I walk to lose weight?

Although you may have heard that 10,000 steps a day is the "gold standard" for walking, that number is somewhat arbitrary and may not be appropriate for everyone, says Alissa Palladino, RDN, CPT, an Atlanta-based dietitian and certified personal trainer. “Walking goals need to be tailored to an individual’s current fitness level, health status, and lifestyle,” she says. “You may want to set a lower or a higher goal for yourself depending on a variety of factors.”

Although it's hard to calculate the exact number of steps you need to lose weight, generally speaking, walking for 30 minutes per day should add up to roughly 100 to 200 calories burned, says Pata. "Doing 30 minutes worth of walking for seven days can create a weekly caloric expenditure of 700 to 1,400 calories. These numbers can add up in the long run and result in weight loss for someone who is overweight and was previously sedentary," she says.

To figure out how much walking you need to do to lose weight, it can help to identify your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which helps you calculate how many calories you need to burn for a calorie deficit. You can speak with a certified trainer or use an online calculator like this one from NASM.

12 Walking Tips For Weight Loss

1. warm up and stretch beforehand..

" Stretching and activating specific muscles before your walk will help you decrease your chance of pain and injury during and after your walk," says Wickham. "If you have pain during your walk, this is your body telling you that you really need to start dedicating time to your joint mobility . Everyone should be able to perform a basic life task such as walking without pain."

Doing lunges before a walk can also help, he says. "Performing a set of 10 walking lunges every so often can help you build stronger legs, and gain muscle mass," says Wickham. "Gaining lean muscle mass will increase your resting metabolic expenditure, which means you will be burning more calories at rest. This all leads to increased weight loss."

2. Wear a weighted vest or backpack.

If you're looking for more intensity, a weighted vest or backpack will increase the demand on your body during your walks, says Wickham. "Typically, anything that makes an exercise more challenging will lead to an increase in calories burned," he adds.

3. Use an app or watch to track your steps.

Driven by numbers? Try tracking your steps with a mobile app or smartwatch. This can help you view your progress and stay focused on your movement goals. "Data tracking can help motivate individuals [toward] goals, accomplishments, and help make up for any deficits throughout the week," says Pata.

4. Alternate between walking and jogging.

You don't necessarily have to run to lose weight , but to amp up your walking workouts, try jogging or running slowly for as little as 10 seconds and then walk for two minutes (and repeat). "Adding in short jogs or runs during your walk will help you increase the intensity of your workout, which can help you accelerate your weight loss," Wickham says.

To get creative (and work your leg muscles ), you can also practice walking backward, says Wickham. "Walking backward works your quadricep muscles more than walking forward, which can help you maintain healthy and strong knees." Just make sure you're in a safe environment for this (and be aware of other pedestrians).

5. Create a fun walking playlist.

Sometimes, all it takes is the right song to pump you up. Playing uplifting tunes while you're out and about can make your walking experience more enjoyable. To fully immerse yourself, Pata suggests creating a workout playlist of your favorite songs that lasts the length of the walk. It'll fly by before you know it!

6. Don't forget your water bottle.

Drinking water is an important part of weight loss, so don't forget to bring your favorite bottle along. "Staying properly hydrated is key for optimal health," says Wickham. "The healthier and more hydrated you are, the better your weight loss journey will be." Not to mention, the H2O will keep your energy up and help you log more miles.

7. Use a food tracker.

If you're already taking stock of what you eat with a food diary app , it may be helpful to jot down how many calories you're burning by walking. This helps keep you aware of your actions and how it measures up against your weight loss goals, says Pata. That said, counting calories isn't the healthiest option for everyone, so be mindful of choosing a method that works best for you.

8. Stay consistent.

To reap the full benefits of walking for weight loss, you have to commit to walking at a regular schedule, whether that's once a day or a week. "Health is a lifestyle, not a quick fix," says Wickham. "Find ways that you can add in your walks that will help stay consistent. The more often you walk, the more weight loss you will have." Pro tip: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, get off the bus or train a few stops early and walk home, or invest in an at-home treadmill to get your steps in.

9. Purchase a good pair of shoes.

Next, treat yourself to some nice sneakers that you only use for walking, Pata says. "This creates a 'get-in-the-zone' attitude when you put them on and [encourages] an enjoyable walking experience." From walking shoes for flat feet to podiatrist-recommended options, there are plenty of pairs to choose from.

10. Schedule and map out your walks.

Penciling in your workouts will make it that much more likely that you'll follow through with your goals. "You know what they say...schedule it or you won’t do it. Choosing one time every day to perform your walks will help you stay consistent," says Wickham. "Prioritize your walks and plan around them to ensure you get them in every day."

"You can use Google Maps to plan out your walking route so that you know exactly where you will be walking and the distance you will be walking," Wickham adds. Just be aware of your surroundings, practice safety, and share your location with someone you trust just in case—especially if you're walking solo.

11. Weather-proof your walks (and have a backup plan).

As a general tip, have the right apparel on hand for rain, cold, or hot weather, says Pata. This will help you stay prepared and less likely to miss a walk session due to less-than-ideal conditions.

To make sure you still exercise on bad weather days, have a rainy-day back-up plan, like keeping a bag packed for the gym or going to the nearest mall to do some laps, Pata recommends. You’ll be less likely to forget working out altogether if you have a plan B in place.

12. Invite a friend or family member on your walks.

Asking someone to keep you company while you get some steps in is a great way to maintain relationships—and it will help keep you consistent with your walks, says Wickham. You can even suggest coffee and a walk, Pata says, which is a great way to be social and get movement in at the same time.

If you can't be in-person, schedule a catch-up call with someone while you walk. “Besides rekindling or maintaining relationships, [a phone call] will make time go by more quickly and the walks may begin to become enjoyable over time,” says Pata.

How to Plan a Route with Google Maps

Google Maps can be useful to navigate through a new location or place. You can also use it to find the best route or route alternatives, and plan your trip accordingly. You can get turn by turn directions, and different routes depending on your method of transportation. You will also be able to tell how long it will take you to get to your destination.

Step 1 Go to Google...

  • A list of possible results will drop down. Click your selection, and the map will automatically expand to show you the routes from this starting location to your destination.

Step 4 Add more stops.

  • Repeat this step for all the other stops you will make in the same trip.

Step 5 Select a transportation mode.

  • For driving—If you’re driving, click the car icon on the toolbar. This is generally the default route.
  • For transit—If you are commuting via bus, train, subway, or other public transit, click the train icon on the toolbar. The routes on the map will slightly change to accommodate all public transit routes.
  • For walking—If you’re walking, click the pedestrian icon on the toolbar. The routes on the map will slightly change to accommodate walking routes.
  • For cycling—If you’re biking or cycling, click the cycling icon on the toolbar. The routes on the map will slightly change to accommodate safe biking routes.

Step 6 View the routes.

  • Metro—You can identify metro or subway stops by the blue “M” icon on the map.
  • Hotel/motel—You can identify hotel and motels by the brown bed icon on the map.
  • Coffeehouse—You can identify coffeehouse locations by the orange coffee cup icon on the map.
  • Restaurant—You can identify restaurant or fast-food locations by the orange spoon-and-fork icon on the map.
  • Bank—You can identify bank locations by the blue dollar icon on the map.
  • Shopping center—You can identify shopping center or store locations by the blue handbag icon on the map.
  • Market. You can identify grocery or market locations by the blue shopping cart icon on the map.
  • Church—You can identify church locations by the brown church icon on the map.
  • Park—You can identify park locations by the green tree icon on the map.
  • Hospital—You can identify hospital locations by the red “H” icon on the map.
  • School—You can identify school locations by the brown hat icon on the map.
  • Library—You can identify library locations by the brown book icon on the map.

Step 1 Launch Google Maps.

  • A list of possible results will drop down. Tap your selection, and you will be shown the best transportation method and route from your starting location to your destination, with the total distance and time. Most of the time this will be via car or rail, since these are the faster options.

Step 4 Select a transportation mode.

  • Driving—If you’re driving, tap the car icon on the toolbar.
  • Transit—If you commuting via bus, train, subway, or other public transit, tap the train icon on the toolbar.
  • Walking—If you’re walking, tap the pedestrian icon on the toolbar.

Step 5 View the routes.

  • Hotel/motel—You can identify hotel and motel locations by the brown bed icon on the map.

How Long It Should Take to Walk a Mile – and How That Can Help to Improve Your Fitness

Whether you're looking to move more or you want to upgrade your daily stroll, these tips will help you pick up the pace

IF YOU LIVE somewhere with pavements, you probably do your fair share of walking to get around. Even if you live in a more car-centric space, you likely have access to parks and other green space to take a stroll. Whether you think of walking as exercise or as a means to get from A to B, there are so many reasons to give your ambulatory habits some more focused attention.

The Benefits of Walking

You’ve likely heard many times over about all the reasons you should prioritise walking , but they deserve repeating.

Walking Can Help to Boost Your Mood

'As soon as you get out there and you start moving your body, it reduces stress, [and] reduces tension,' says Stanten.

Walking Can Help Reduce Risk of Disease

Walking is cardiovascular exercise, and this type of exercise helps to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and lowers blood pressure, among other health perks, according to Stanten.

Walking Is Accessible

'Walking is so flexible and readily available,' she says. 'You can do it anywhere — from home, from work. You can do it by yourself. You can do it with people. You can do it in short bouts, long bouts – there's so many different ways to walk.'

Walking Is Joint-Friendly Exercise

Movement gets blood flowing to working muscles and lubricates joints, which can ease pain and stiffness, says Stanten. 'Walking is low impact,' she says. 'So, if you have any kind of joint problems, it's still an activity that most people can do.'

Walking Is Good for Cross-Training

Even if you enjoy doing other types of exercise, walking is a simple and accessible way to stay active otherwise, she says. 'It's a great cross-training modality for runners or anybody doing higher impact exercise.'

How Much Should You Walk Every Day?

Before you think about how much you should be walking or consider setting a goal, assess how much you’re currently walking, says Stanten. Go about your normal routine and track how many steps you’ve taken at the end of each day. Do this for a few days, and make sure at least one day is a weekday and one a weekend. Capture those results so you can have a baseline to increase from there.

You might be confused about exactly how many steps you should be getting every day. Is it 7,500, or is 10,000 still the magic number? Instead of thinking about step count, consider starting with the current Physical Activity Guidelines for Brits , which recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity per week. For cardio, that correlates to about 30 minutes, five days a week, “which breaks down to three 10-minute walks a day, which is generally pretty doable,” says Stanten.

If you still find that counting steps is more motivating, she suggests trying to add another 500 or even 1,000 steps a day, if that feels doable.

How Long Should It Take to Walk a Mile?

Another way to track your walking fitness is to gauge how long it takes you to walk a mile. 'In general most people will cover a mile somewhere between 15 to 20 minutes,' says Stanten. 'Fifteen is on the faster side, but [for] people who are working out, that 15-minute-per-mile pace is very reasonable.' If you find that you’re closer to 20 minutes, and your goal is to walk a mile every day – or an additional mile daily – try breaking up your work into a pair of 10-minute walks, she says.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to walk a mile, or whether you walk that mile consecutively or throughout the day. Simply increasing the amount of activity in your life and cutting down sedentary time will help you attain those mind and body benefits.

How to Increase Your Walking Pace

If you’re interested in boosting your walking pace – whether to challenge your cardio fitness or just beat the train doors before they close – there are a few tricks and tips that can make a difference immediately, says Stanten.

Bend Your Arms

Think about it: 'You don't run with our arms down at your side,' she says. 'You're going to walk faster with your arms bent.'

Take Shorter, Quicker Steps

The biggest tip to improve your speed is to take short, quick steps, says Stanten. 'When people try to walk faster, they automatically start to take these big long steps, and that actually slows you down, and it puts a lot more stress on your joints,' she says. Stepping directly in front of you allows you to roll through the middle of your foot and push off your toes to keep your stride smoother, she says.

Swing Your Arms Straight

Avoid swinging arms side to side or having them cross your body as you move, says Stanten. 'Your hand should go back to about your hip and swing forward, but not above chest height.'

Keep Good Posture

'Stand up nice and tall,' she says. 'Open up your chest. It's easier to breathe. Keep your abs tight; that's going to help.'

Pick a Target to Walk Toward

'People walk faster if they pick a spot ahead of them, and focus on that instead of looking around,' says Stanten. Pick someone who is walking ahead of you and try to mentally catch up to them.

Mix Up Your Paces

Mix bouts of walking at your most intense pace, moderate pace, and recovery pace. Then track your time on a set route before intervals, and after to see how your pace progresses.

How Tesla Planted the Seeds for Its Own Potential Downfall

Today, the story of how China gave Tesla a lifeline that saved the company — and how that lifeline has now given China the tools to beat Tesla at its own game. My colleague, Mara Hvistendahl, explains.

It’s Tuesday, April 9.

So, Mara, you’ve spent the past four months investigating Elon Musk and his ties to China through his company, Tesla. Tell us why.

Well, a lot of American companies are heavily invested in China, but Tesla’s kind of special. As my colleagues and I started talking to sources, we realized that many people felt that China played a crucial role in rescuing the company at a critical moment when it was on the brink of failure and that China helps account for Tesla’s success, for making it the most valuable car company in the world today, and for making Elon Musk ultra rich.

That’s super intriguing. So maybe take us back to the beginning. When does the story start?

So the story starts in the mid 2010s. Tesla had been this company that had all this hype around it. But —

A lot of people were shocked by Tesla’s earnings report. Not only did they make a lot less money than expected, they’re also making a lot less cars.

Tesla was struggling.

The delivery of the Model 3 has been delayed yet again.

Tesla engineers are saying 40 percent of the parts made at the Fremont factory need reworking.

At the time, they made their cars in Fremont, California, and they were facing production delays.

Tesla is confirming that Cal/OSHA is investigating the company over concerns over workplace safety.

Elon Musk has instituted a kind of famously grueling work culture at the factory, and that did not go over well with California labor law.

The federal government now has four active investigations involving Tesla.

They were clashing with regulators.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate a second crash involving Tesla’s autopilot system.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk — friends are really concerned about him. That’s what Musk told “The New York Times.”

And by 2018, he was having all of these crises.

According to “The Times,” Musk choked up multiple times and struggled to maintain his composure during an hour-long interview about turmoil at his electric car company, Tesla.

So all of this kind of converged to put immense pressure on him to do something.

And where does China come in?

Well, setting up a factory in China, in a way, would solve some of these problems for Musk. Labor costs were lower. Workers couldn’t unionize there. China provided access to this steady supply of cheaper parts. So Elon Musk was set on going to China. But first, Tesla and Musk wanted to change a key policy in China.

Hmm, what kind of policy?

So they wanted China to adopt a policy that was aimed at lowering car emissions. And the idea was that it would be modeled after a similar policy in California that had benefited Tesla there.

OK, so explain what that policy actually did. And how did it benefit Tesla?

So California had this system called the Zero-Emission Vehicle program. And that was designed to encourage companies to make cleaner cars, including electric vehicles. And they did that by setting pollution targets. So companies that made a lot of clean cars got credits. And then companies that failed to meet those targets, that produced too many gas-guzzling cars, would have to buy credits from the cleaner companies.

So California is trying to incentivize companies to make cleaner cars by forcing the traditional carmakers to pay cleaner car makers, which basically means dirtier car makers are effectively subsidizing cleaner cars.

Yes, that’s right. And Tesla, as a company that came along just making EVs, profited immensely from this system. And in its early years, when Tesla was really struggling to stay afloat, the money that it earned from selling credits in California to polluting car companies were absolutely crucial, so much so that the company structured a lot of its lobbying efforts around this system, around preserving these credits. And we talked to a former regulator who said as much.

How much money are we talking about here?

So from 2008, when Tesla unveiled its first car, up until the end of last year, Tesla made almost $4 billion by selling credits in California.

Wow. So Musk basically wants China to recreate this California-style program, which was incredibly lucrative for Tesla, there. And they’re basically holding that up as a condition to their building a factory in China.

Right. And at this point in the story, an interesting alliance emerges. Because it wasn’t just Tesla that wanted this emissions program in China. It was also environmentalists from California who had seen the success of the program up close in their own state.

If you go back to that period, to the early 2010s, I was living in China at the time in Beijing and Shanghai. And it was incredibly polluted. We called it airpocalypse at times. I had my first child in China at that point. And as soon as it was safe to put a baby mask on her, we put a little baby mask on her. There were days where people just would try to avoid going outside because it was so polluted. And some of the pollution was actually wafting across the Pacific Ocean to California.

Wow, so California is experiencing that Chinese air pollution firsthand and, in a way, has a direct stake in lowering it.

That’s right. So Governor Jerry Brown, for example — this became kind of his signature issue, was working with China to clean up the environment, in part by exporting this emission scheme. It was also an era of a lot more US-China cooperation. China was seen as absolutely crucial to combating climate change.

So you had all these groups working to get this California emissions scheme exported to China — and the governor’s office and environmental groups and Tesla. And it worked. In 2017, China did adopt a system that was modeled after California’s.

It’s pretty incredible. So California basically exports its emissions-trading system to China, which I imagine at the time was a big win for Californian environmentalists. But it was also a big win for Tesla.

It was definitely a big win for Tesla. And we know that in just a few years Tesla, made almost $1 billion from the emissions-trading program he helped lobby for in China.

So Elon Musk goes on, builds a factory in China. And he does so in Shanghai, where he builds a close relationship with the top official in the city, who actually is now the number-two official in all of China, Li Qiang.

So according to Chinese state media, Elon Musk actually proposed building the factory in two years, which would be fast. And Li came back and proposed that they do it in one year, which — things go up really quickly in China. But even for China, this is incredibly fast. And they broke ground on the factory in January 2019. And by the end of the year, cars were rolling off the line. So then in January 2020, Musk was able to get up on stage in Shanghai and unveil the first Chinese-made Teslas.

Really want to thank the Tesla team and the government officials that have been really helpful in making this happen.

And she says —

And he actually broke into dance. He was so happy, a kind of awkward dance.

[UPBEAT MUSIC]

And what is the factory like?

The Shanghai factory is huge. 20,000 people work there. Tesla’s factories around the world tend to be pretty large, but the Shanghai workers work more shifts. And when Tesla set up in China, Chinese banks ended up offering Tesla $1.5 billion in low-interest loans. They got a preferential tax rate in Shanghai.

This deal was so generous that one auto industry official we talked to said that a government minister had actually lamented that they were giving Tesla too much. And it is an incredibly productive factory. It’s now the flagship export factory for Tesla.

So it opens in late 2019. And that’s, of course, the time when the pandemic hits.

Yes. I mean, you might think that this is really poor timing for Elon Musk. But it didn’t quite turn out that way. In fact, Tesla’s factory in Shanghai was closed for only around two weeks, whereas the factory in Fremont was closed for around two months.

That’s a big difference.

Yes, and it really, really mattered to Elon Musk. If you can think back to 2020, you might recall that he was railing against California politicians for closing his factory. In China, the factory stayed open. Workers were working around the clock. And Elon Musk said on a podcast —

China rocks, in my opinion.

— China rocks.

There’s a lot of smart, hardworking people. And they’re not entitled. They’re not complacent, whereas I see —

We’ve seen a lot of momentum and enthusiasm for electric vehicles, stocks, and Tesla certainly leading the charge.

Tesla’s stock price kept going up.

Tesla has become just the fifth company to reach a trillion-dollar valuation. The massive valuation happened after Tesla’s stock price hit an all-time high of more than $1,000.

So this company that had just a few years earlier been on the brink of failure, looking to China for a lifeline, was suddenly riding high. And —

Tesla is now the most valuable car company in the world. It’s worth more than General Motors, Ford, Fiat, Chrysler.

By the summer, it had become the most valuable car company in the world.

Guess what? Elon Musk is now the world’s richest man.

“Forbes” says he’s worth more than $255 billion.

And Elon Musk’s wealth is tied up in Tesla stock. And in the following year, he became the wealthiest man in the world.

So you have this emission trading system, which we discussed and which, in part, thanks to Tesla, is now established in China. It’s bringing in money to Tesla. And now this Shanghai factory is continuing to produce cars for Tesla in the middle of the pandemic. So China really paid off for Tesla. But what was in it for China?

Well, China wasn’t doing this for charity.

What Chinese leaders really wanted was to turn their fledgling electric vehicle industry into a global powerhouse. And they figured that Tesla was the ticket to get there. And that’s precisely what happened.

So, Mara, you’ve just told us the story of how Elon Musk used China to turn Tesla into the biggest car maker in the world and himself — at one point — into the richest man in the world. Now I want to understand the other side of this story. How did China use Tesla?

Well, Tesla basically became a catfish for China’s EV industry.

A catfish, what do you mean by that?

It’s a term from the business world. And, essentially, it means a super aggressive fish that makes the other fish in the pond swim faster. And by bringing in this super competitive, aggressive foreign company into China, which at that point had these fledgling EV companies, Chinese leaders hoped to spur the upstart Chinese EV makers to up their game.

So you’re saying that at this point, China actually already had a number of smaller EV companies, which many people in the West may not even be aware of, these smaller fish in the pond that you were referring to.

Yes, there were a lot of them. They were often locally based. Like, one would be strong in one city, and one would be strong in another city. And Chinese leaders saw that they needed to become more competitive in order to thrive.

And China had tried for decades to build up this traditional car industry by bringing in foreign companies to set up joint ventures. They had really had their sights set on building a strong car industry, and it didn’t really work. I mean, how many traditional Chinese car company brands can you name?

Exactly none.

Yeah, right. So going back to the aughts and the 2010s, they had this advantage that many Chinese hadn’t yet been hooked on gas-guzzling cars. There were still many people who were buying their first car ever. So officials had all these levers they could pull to try to encourage or try to push people’s behavior in a certain direction.

And their idea was to try to ensure that when people went to buy their first car, it would be an EV — and not just an EV but, hopefully, a Chinese EV. So they did things like — at the time, just a license plate for your car could cost an exorbitant amount of money and be difficult to get. And so they made license plates for electric vehicles free. So there were all these preferential policies that were unveiled to nudge people toward buying EVs.

So that’s fascinating. So China is incentivizing consumers to buy EV cars and incentivizing also the whole industry to get its act together by chucking this big American company in the mix and hoping that it will increase competitiveness. What I’m particularly struck by, Mara, in what you said is the concept of leapfrogging over the conventional combustion engine phase, which took us decades to live through. We’re still living in it, in many ways, in the West.

But listening to you, it sounds a little bit like China wasn’t really thinking about this transition to EVs as an environmental policy. It sounds like they were doing this more from an industrial-policy perspective.

Right. The environment and the horrible era at the time was a factor, but it was a pretty minor factor, according to people who were privy to the policy discussions. The more significant factor was industrial policy and an interest in building up a competitive sphere.

So China now wants to become a leader in the global EV sector, and it wants to use Tesla to get there. What does that actually look like?

Well, you need sophisticated suppliers to make the component parts of electric vehicles. And just by being in China, Tesla helped spur the development of several suppliers. Like, for example, the battery is a crucial piece of any EV.

And Tesla, with a fair amount of encouragement — and also various levers from the Chinese government — became a customer of a battery maker called CATL, a homegrown Chinese battery maker. And they have become very close to Tesla and have even set up a factory near Teslas in Shanghai. And today, with Tesla’s business — and, of course, with the business of some other companies — CATL is the biggest battery maker in the world.

But beyond just stimulating the growth of suppliers, Tesla also made these other fish in the pond swim faster. And the biggest Chinese EV company to come out of that period is one called BYD. It’s short for Build Your Dreams.

We are BYD. You’ve probably never heard of us.

From battery maker to the biggest electric vehicle or EV manufacturer in China.

They’ve got a lot of models. They’ve got a lot of discounts. They’ve got a lot of market growth.

China’s biggest EV maker just overtook Tesla in terms of worldwide sales.

BYD 10, Chinese automobile redefined.

I’ve actually started seeing that brand on the streets here in Europe recently, especially in Germany, where my brother actually used to lease a Tesla and now leases a BYD.

Does he like it?

He does. Although he did, to be fair, say that he misses the luxury of the Tesla, but it just became too expensive, really.

The price point is a huge reason that BYD is increasingly giving Tesla a run for its money. Years ago, back in 2011 —

Although there’s competitors now ramping up. And, as you’re familiar with, BYD, which is also —

— Elon Musk actually mocked their cars.

— electric vehicles, here he is trying to compete. Why do you laugh?

He asked an interviewer —

Have you seen their car?

I have seen their car, yes.

— have you seen their cars? Sort of suggesting, like, they’re no competition for us.

You don’t see them at all as a competitor?

Why is that? I mean, they offer a lower price point.

I don’t think they have a great product. I think their focus is — and rightly should be — on making sure they don’t die in China.

But they have been steadily improving. They’ve been in the EV space for a while, but they really started improving a few years ago, once Tesla came on the scene. That was due to a number of factors, not entirely because of Tesla. But Tesla played a role in helping train up talent in China. One former Tesla employee who worked at the company as they were getting set up in China told me that most of the employees who were at the company at the time now work for Chinese competitors.

So they have really played this important role in the EV ecosystem.

And you mentioned the price advantage. So just for comparison, what does an average BYD sell for compared to a more affordable Tesla car?

So BYD has an ultra-cheap model called the Seagull that sells for around $10,000 now in China, whereas Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys in China sell for more than twice that.

Wow. How’s BYD able to sell EVs at these much lower prices?

Well, the Seagull is really just a simpler car. It has less range than a Tesla. It lacks some safety measures. But BYD has this other crucial advantage, which is that they’re vertically integrated. Like, they control many aspects of the supply chain, up and down the supply chain. When you look at the battery level, they make batteries. But they even own the mines where lithium is mined for the batteries.

And they recently launched a fleet of ships. So they actually operate the boats that are sending their cars to Europe or other parts of the world.

So BYD is basically cutting out the middleman on all these aspects of the supply chain, and that’s how they can undercut other car makers on price.

Yeah. They’ve cut out the middleman, and they’ve cut out the shipping company and almost everything else.

So how is BYD doing now as a company compared to Tesla?

In terms of market cap, they’re still much smaller than Tesla. But, crucially, they overtook Tesla in sales in the last quarter of last year.

Yeah, that was a huge milestone. Tesla still dominates in the European market, which is a very important market for EVs. But BYD is starting to export there. And Europe traditionally is kind of automotive powerhouse, and the companies and government officials there are very, very concerned. I interviewed the French finance minister, and he told me that China has a five - to seven-year head start on Europe when it comes to EVs.

Wow. And what has Elon Musk said about this incredible rise of BYD in recent years? Do you think he anticipated that Tesla’s entry into the Chinese market could end up building up its own competition?

Well, I can’t get inside his head, and he did not respond to our questions. But —

The Chinese car companies are the most competitive car companies in the world.

— he has certainly changed his tune. So, remember, he was joking about BYD some years ago.

Yeah, he’s not joking anymore.

I think they will have significant success.

He had dismissed Chinese EV makers. He now appears increasingly concerned about these new competitors —

Frankly, I think if there are not trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world.

— to the point that on an earnings call in January, he all but endorsed the use of trade barriers against them.

They’re extremely good.

I think it’s so interesting, in a way — of course, with perfect hindsight — the kind of maybe complacency or naivete with which he may not have anticipated this turn of events. And in some ways, he’s not alone, right? It speaks to something larger. Like, China, for a long time, was seen as kind of the sweatshop or the manufacturer of the world — or perhaps as an export market for a lot of these Western companies. It certainly wasn’t putting out its own big brand names. It was making stuff for the brand names.

But recently, they have quite a lot of their own brand names. Everybody talks about TikTok. There’s Huawei. There’s WeChat, Lenovo. And now there is BYD. So China is becoming a leader in technology in certain areas. And I think that shift in some ways has happened. And a lot of Western companies — perhaps like Tesla — were kind of late to waking up to that.

Right. Tesla is looking fragile now. Their stock price dropped 30 percent in the first quarter of this year. And to a large degree, that is because of the threat of companies like BYD from China and the perception that Tesla’s position as number one in the market is no longer guaranteed.

So, Mara, all this raises a much bigger question for me, which is, who is going to own the future of EVs? And based on everything you’ve said so far, it seems like China owns the future of EVs. Is that right?

Well, possibly, but the jury is still out. Tesla is still far bigger for now. But there is this increasing fear that China owns the future of EVs. If you look at the US, there are already 25 percent tariffs on EVs from China. There’s talk of increasing them. The Commerce Department recently launched an investigation into data collection by electric vehicles from China.

So all of these factors are creating uncertainty around what could happen. And the European Union may also add new tariffs against Chinese-made cars. And China is an economic rival and a security rival and, in many ways, our main adversary. So this whole issue is intertwined with national security. And Tesla is really in the middle of it.

Right. So the sort of new Cold War that people are talking about between the US and China is, in a sense, the backdrop to this story. But on one level, what we’ve been talking about, it’s really a corporate story, an economic story that has this geopolitical backdrop. But it’s also very much an environmental story. So, regardless of how Elon Musk and Tesla fare in the end, is BYD’s rise and its ability to create high-quality and — perhaps more importantly — affordable EVs ultimately a good thing for the world?

If I think back on those years I spent living in Shanghai and Beijing when it was extremely polluted and there were days when you couldn’t go outside — I don’t think anyone wants to go back to that.

So it’s clear that EVs are the future and that they’re crucial to the green energy transition that we have to make. How exactly we get there is still unclear. But what is true is that China did just make that transition easier.

When Elon Musk set up Tesla’s factory in China, he made a bet that brought him cheap parts and capable workers — a bet that made him ultrarich and saved his company.
